/qst/ - Quests

>Racing with Rose edition

Hello, good people of /qst/. This quest is, as is probably obvious from the OP pic, based on the Teen Titans animated series. You'll be taking the part of a young man and potential Titan, guiding him through his trials and tribulations.

>Rules

There will be a 15 minute voting period between posts.

Please only choose one option (I will let you know in cases where you can choose more)

An option with two arrows (>>) beside it is one that can be combined with other options

Write-ins of dialogue are allowed, but they won't be put in as-written, just sort of the spirit of the write-in. Additionally, dialogue write-ins require a significant amount of support from other players to be put in, as they can greatly affect the character.

Action write-ins will only be allowed under certain circumstances, which I'll announce. You can suggest an action to me if you want, and I may allow it, but might not depending on various factors.

No dice system in this quest. Victory and defeat will come down to decisions rather than random luck. Learn from experiences, develop strategies, and think outside the box at times (like I said, an action can be suggested to me).

Above all, have fun. I want this to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Through success, failure, and everything in-between, I hope this will be an adventure worth remembering.

A racing game? That sounds fun. It's very simple for anybody who knows the basics of how a car works, meaning that nobody (with the possible exception of Donna) should have any trouble with it.

And, as luck would have it, there are three machines available, all linked together. Some kid is sitting in the last one, looking excited when he sees people coming to join him. That makes four players, a full house. You take your seat, and once the girls have done the same, slide your coin into the slot, finding yourself in a vehicle-selection screen.

The vehicles all have different levels of strength and weakness in various categories. Speed, power, control, these are the areas that are detailed beside each vehicle. There are four to choose from, one that had great speed, but is lacking in the other areas, particularly power. There's a powerful one that's quite lacking in the speed department. There's a well-controlled one that sacrifices speed and power, and a jack-of-all-trades sort of thing.

Which one do you pick?

Pete doesn't seem familiar with this specific game so he might be better off with the balanced car too. And Donna will know the advice is in good faith if we pick one of the same cars we recommend to her.
>>
>>2335567
Thanks.

Also, I picked the balanced car because I think Rose is probably better than us at driving and will pick the speed car (the one with the highest skill cap), and subsequently to take advantage of an important life lesson when it comes to competition: never give up, because even if you're outclassed, sometimes the other person will make a mistake.

Also, if the kid wins, Pete should announce the score is now Donna: 1, Pete: 1, Rose: 1, That Kid: 1, and always include the kid in the scoring even if he has nothing to do with the other games we play.

"Donna, how much do you know about cars?" you ask your dark-haired friend.

"Not much," she admits. "But I know you press a pedal and turn a wheel, so this game shouldn't be too difficult for me."

If she was driving an actual car, you'd be concerned with such limited knowledge, but seeing as it's a video-game, she pretty much seems to know what she needs to know already. You hope. She might crash into some walls.

"You should probably use a controlled or balanced car," you tell your friend.

Donna thinks it over for a moment, then goes with the balanced car, which just so happens to be what you intended to choose for yourself in this race.

The kid picks the control car, and Rose picks the speedy one. Once all four cars have been selected, the game randomly selects a stage for the four of you to race through. It's some kind of city level, thought it's kind of strange that the establishing shots they show before the race depict few people, several destroyed cars, and a giant robot with the head of a shark rampaging in the middle of it all.

"ARE YOU READY?!" the game shouts as it counts down to the match start.

"Yes," Donna answers, gripping the steering wheel and preparing to begin.

Rose just smirks, leaning in and waiting for the game to start.

The kid is just smiling as he grips the wheel.

"GO!" the game shouts, followed by the sound of a roaring crowd as you and the others shoot off down the street.

Rose takes the lead right away, her car's superior speed giving her a serious head-start that leaves the rest of you in the dust. You and Donna manage to keep her in sight, however, though you probably won't gain much ground until she makes some kind of mistake. Behind you somewhere, the kid drives on.

"WATCH OUT, RACERS!" the game suddenly warns as you make the first turn.

The buildings on the new street are hit by some sort of laser, and chunks of rubble come plummeting toward the roadway right in your path. You quickly begin to maneuver through the chaos, and Donna does the same, barely avoiding a chunk of rubble crashing on her head. Rose, on the other hand, rides head-first into one of the falling pieces of building, prompting an exploding car animation and a short delay while she respawns.

You and Donna are catching up as you make your way through the falling chunks, and at this rate, you may pull ahead of Rose. But, you spot something off to the side. A power booster. It'll take at least a few seconds to get this power up, but it may come in handy.

The power booster is far too tempting a target. Rose is respawning, Donna's still kind of getting the hang of things, and that kid is still in last place. This boost could come in handy later on, so you decide that it's worth the delay you'll have to take in going after it.

Letting Donna take the lead for the moment, you turn off and head for the power booster, maneuvering past the falling debris as you race toward your prize. In the meantime, Rose respawns and gives chase after Donna, while the kid uses his car's superior control to weave through the hazards and follow them down the open road.

The power booster (a spinning canister with "power" written on it) is yours. You drive into it, and the "power" button on your machine lights up. At any time, you can press it, and gain a boost to your car's power. The boost will be temporary, of course, but if you use it at the proper moment, you could gain a serious advantage.

Heading back and evading the debris, you join the chase along the open road, finding yourself gaining on the kid, who moves his car in front of you as you try to pass. He keeps this up until you're right on his tail, then moves out of the way, letting you pass and drive right toward a raised bridge, which you can see Donna driving right over.

You gain speed as you approach it, though you pause as you spot Donna respawning on your side of the bridge. You're confused at first, but as you get closer to the jump, you see a massive tentacle appear in the gap between the two sides of the bridge, swinging in an arc before descending to the water below.

You make the jump seconds later, successfully avoiding the creature and continuing the race, now in second place with Rose barely visible in the distance. That creature from the establishing shots appears from behind a skyscraper, and shoots a laser beam from its mouth, creating a hole in the street.

It seems unavoidable, and Rose disappears right into it. Soon, you do the same, finding yourself in a dimly-lit underground area. As you drive forward through it, the "ceiling" rumbles, and chunks of rock crash to the ground in the path of the race. In this case, it's not a constant threat, so all you have to do is move around them.

Rose isn't respawning this time, so you guess she didn't hit any of the rocks. Surprisingly, though, that kid shoots right past you, laughing to himself as he begins to gain on Rose. He must have found a speed booster.

Once you've cleared the rocks, you find the path winding down into the darkness. It seems like you could possible drive off the edge of the road and land on it again a few levels down.

I don't know of any racing games that require you to feed the slot when you respawn. Rose would have done it a few times by now if that were the case.
>>
>>2335738
>>2335739
Time for a little risk. You drive right off the side of the track, dropping down several levels and hitting the ground, at which point your car is destroyed in a fiery explosion. However, for some reason, you respawn where you hit the ground, meaning you covered significant ground even with the delay.

Rose shoots past you while you're respawning, but you manage to keep just ahead of the kid, and do your best to catch up with your white-haired friend. Her superior speed makes that difficult, however, as does the fact that she's not making very many mistakes. The mini-map on the side of the screen tells you that Donna is still trailing behind, but she's slowly gaining on the kid.

Continuing onward, you find the rocky surroundings replaced with metal, and various machines. The Tesla coils that adorn several of them clue you in that this is supposed to be some sort of secret lab area. That's confirmed a few seconds later when you approach a catwalk, and some guy in a lab-coat starts firing lasers at you. The game warns you where the lasers are about to hit, giving you a chance to get out of the way, but he fires so fast that they're difficult to avoid nonetheless. You're slowed down, and in the time it takes you to pass the catwalk, the kid manages to gain a slim lead on you again.

The metal surroundings are once again replaced with rock, which then vanishes in total darkness. You continue forward blindly, until the area lights up again and you find yourself speeding toward a wall with no-way around it.

You and the kid both stop before you can crash into the wall, and find Rose just finishing a respawn in the same general spot. Donna catches up as well, and the four of you are lifted up back to the surface, where you once more continue down the streets.

You manage to ram Rose from behind and send her car spinning. Donna does the same to the kid, then attempts to do the same to you, though you manage to avoid that by suddenly slowing down and letting her pass in front. You speed up again and quickly catch up.

>A. Activate your power booster and ram Donna off the road

Battery is an amnesiac robot with electrical powers tied to Darkseid who used to work for Brother Blood, and already stopped him. He's also an antihero/villain.
He dates Blackfire. Dunno bout the other two, well, Weaver follows a spider-powered teenager who isn't Peter Parker, but pretty much is Spider-Man, down to his name.

The mini-map says that you've nearly finished the track. You're right behind Donna, easily within striking distance if you decide to try removing her from the track. But, her car is the same type as yours, so she may be more resistant to being sent into a spin-out or knocked off of the road than the others.

Better safe than sorry.

You press the "power" button, then ram your car into Donna's, sending her into an uncontrolled spin and allowing you to take the lead. As she struggles to regain control of her car, you take the lead, turning another corner and spotting the finish-line just down the street.

As you speed toward it, Rose catches up with you, ramming into the back of your car. Your power boost helps you enough to keep you from going into a full spin-out, but she's still able to force herself alongside you, then slowly begin to take the lead.

>A. Send her into a spinout and cross the finish line

She's put herself in a bad position. You can easily send her into a spin-out if you ram her now. And so, you do exactly that, slamming into the back of her car and sending her spinning.

With that, you close the remaining distance and cross the finish-line, with the kid coming in second and Rose barely managing to squeeze in third ahead of Donna.

Victory is yours.

Decided to put together a list of things to work on in game. Its just for entertainment value, and maybe to spur discussion/ideas.

Development Paths for Kid Crimson 1/2

Car Acquisition: I doubt Cyborg will ever let me drive the T-Car, and I can fly, but when I do night patrol with the other Titans, it might be nice to chill in a car. Maybe Cyborg would be open to making a new car. A fun project for the two of us. He's a cool guy to hang out with, and I could learn a lot about cars.

Firearm Acquisition: We're good at shooting, but we don't have a gun. Lets ask Cyborg about making a less-than-lethal firearm option. Maybe a Sonic Pistol? Or maybe something that can't be disarmed and doesn't take up our hands.

Gadget Acquisition: Blood's HIVE like gadgets. I should get some countermeasures or maybe gadgets of my own. Robin seems like the guy to talk to.

Conditioning: We're in pretty good shape but we don't really work out much beyond sparring or actual fights. Lets remedy that.

Predicting and Reading: Rose said that we were too reactive in combat. The only way I can see to improve here is experience. We need to spar, maybe without our powers so we can focus on the flow of combat. On the plus side this will be great for our fundamentals. That said I fully expect to get my butt kicked a lot.
>>
>>2337831
Development Paths for Kid Crimson 2/2
Power Stamina: My powers carry major stamina issues, especially when it comes to Teleportation. How to work on it though? Maybe its like physical stamina and I just have to practice doing it. Teleport 'sprints' in the training room could work.

Fury Improvements: Righteous Fury was a good path of development, its improved my Punches and Pushes and let me turn my Crush into a Hold. There's always room for improvement though. Accuracy, Power, and maybe see if I can use these powers to simulate telekinesis?

Fear Improvements: I'm pretty good at making barriers on the fly, but they crack pretty easily in the face of any serious firepower, and that seems to wind me. My principal idea is to find a way to tap Fear directly through a positive lens, like I did with Righteous Fury. That should increase the durability and size of my barriers at least. Other ideas I've been tinkering with are simultaneously deploying multiple barriers, creating barriers at range, and a barrier 'field' around my body. The last one means I'd feel some impact with every hit, and articulation could be annoying, but it'd also mean only ever having to maintain one barrier and always having full coverage. It'd be a straight defense boost to let me tangle with some heavier hitters.

Sorrow Improvements: Stamina is the main issue, but there might also be functionality that I'm missing here. I teleport with anything touching me. What's my maximum carrying capacity? I've managed to teleport with three Titans last time we tangled with Blood's HIVE. Can I learn to teleport without passengers? Can I learn to teleport someone else without teleporting myself? That'd be a good trick. And of course, finding a way to use the actual emotion of Sorrow in a way that doesn't have a negative impact.

Joy Improvements: This is the easiest power for me to use. I'm not on Starfire or Donna's level in terms of speed, but I think I have better aerial control. Speed practice is an obvious avenue, as is further refining my Slide movement. Right now its rigid and unnatural looking, but if I could integrate natural movement with my Slides I could get some additional range of motion or disguise them. That and practice fighting from unnatural angles and orientations.

Explore new emotions: There are probably new powers I have yet to discover. Didn't Linus turn invisible? Its been a while since I discovered Flight, so I'm probably safe if I discover a new power. I just need to avoid doing so in rapid succession.
>>
>>2337831
Okay here's my feedback:

>Gadgets
I think a few basic things should be good. Flash and smoke bombs, maybe something based off that silk gun.

>Firearm
I'm thinking two guns with two different 'capabilties'. Sonic cannon based off Cy's and going by the previous one: the silk gun? Perhaps set to not fire string but little web-blasts.

>Conditioning
I thought cardio at least was part of his routine. But you're right, if it's not it should be. That and lifting.

>Predicting
Don't we have a danger-room-esque laser thing in the tower? That could help.

>Power Stamina
He could try some "exhaustion" exercises. Like mantaining a power for as long as he can and trying to increase that time.
Or pushing the limits of one, e.g. throwing heavier things against his barriers or teleporting faster and further, or restraining stronger and stronger training partners. Or just punching harder and harder with a punching machine!
Progressive overload my man.

The rest I have nothing to add to.
>>
>>2338007
I'd advise caution on that last one. You remember what happened last time you pushed your powers too far, right?
>>
>>2338276
Yeah, I wouldn't push it to exhaustion, but stressing ourselves at least a little to see if we can adapt to that stress is still a viable plan of action.
>>
>>2338276
I don't mean until you can't do it anymore.

I'll compare it to lifting since I've been doing it for about 5 years now:
You don't lift until you're broken and the bar falls on your neck.
But you do increase the weight, slowly overloading yourself until your body readjusts to this new level.
So even if you're doing 70-90% of your max, you're still improving that range, and by consequence your max.
Without killing yourself.

Also, I admit that when I put "exhaustion" it might seem it's like the exhaustion from after a battle where Pete just goes and crashes on his bed, but nothing like that.
But it wasn't meant to be that, rather like my post above.
>>

Btw, which of those Donna's is our Donna most like? Or is she like the Teen Titans Go comic Donna, where she's really skinny and has basically a topknot ponytail?

Her build in that comic was really due to the artstyle.

I'd say that, at present, she most closely resembles the one on the left wearing the costume of the one in the middle.

Rose marches right over to the same shooting game you played with Beast Boy during your first visit here. She isn't saying much of anything, but you can feel some tension. She is not pleased about her loss in that last game, and intends to pick you apart in this next one.

Donna seems a lot less serious, though she looks at Rose in a way that pretty much tells you she's aware of the white-haired girl's somewhat agitated behavior. She doesn't seem to let it bug her, though, and smiles when you look her way.

"So, you're in the lead," Donna remarks as the two of you walk to join Rose. "Nice work. I should have figured that you'd be better than us at video games. It's been fun, though. I might have to play these kinds of games more often."

She'll have no shortage of people willing to play with her if she decides to do that. You aren't sure how keen Rose is going to be on playing video games after tonight, though. You may be competitive, but she seems to take it to an extreme, which is kind of bothersome. But, hopefully she's still having fun, even if her losses are frustrating her.

"Who's going first?" Rose asks when you and Donna get over to her.

We can always play it smart and point out that counting sparring and vidya, it's a draw.

"I'll go," you decide, wanting to get this little competition over with and have some more fun.

You grab a gun, put in a token, and wait for Rose to do the same. Donna stands back, watching as the two of you get ready to play. Technically, this is a co-op game, but each player is rewarded their own, individual points. One of you will most likely end up with more than the other. From your prior experience, you know that you're really good at this game, but Rose seems determined, and you somehow wouldn't be surprised if she knew how to use a fire-arm.

The game starts, and the two of you start shooting, gunning down enemies before they have the chance to draw their weapons. Neither one of you have to use the pedal to take cover at first, with your combined fire mowing down your enemies too quick for them to do any damage. The first stage ends without either of you taking a single hit.

Stage two sees the two of you starting with roughly the same amount of points. That doesn't last too long, though, as Rose begins to take the lead. Her reflexes and aim are incredible, even compared to your own. It's as if she's aiming before the enemies even appear on the screen, and firing before you can even register that they're there.

By the end of the second stage, despite the fact that you haven't taken any damage, Rose has left you in the dust. In fact, you only got to kill about five enemies out of like, five dozen. As the game continues, you look over at Rose to see that intense, frightening look on her face, almost as if she's actually gunning down hated enemies.

The two of you make it through the entire game on a single token each, but Rose absolutely clobbers you in terms of points. You step away from the game, and find that Rose still looks all intense despite the game ending. Her breath seems fast, as if a ton of adrenaline is coursing through her.

Does Pete have any skills that someone doesn't outshine him in? I really thought shooting might have been it.
>>
>>2339053
Let's just say there's a particular reason Rose was able to outperform Pete here that none of the others would have had.
>>
>>2339053
I mean, he's got HIVE shooting skills, but let's be realistic: he was competing against Deathstroke's daughter, Rose Wilson aka Ravager.

>>2339047
Welp, that's that then. I'll start a crusade for this now.
>>
>>2339053
TBF, if Pete's latent combat skills are why he's good at the game, there's no reason to be surprised that Rose, of all the other Titans, has used some manner of blaster/gun before and is better than him. In retrospect, I feel kind of dumb I didn't anticipate it desu.
>>
>>2339053
Not at the moment. Even his greatest asset, the fact that he has a broad power-set (that is only going to get broader) is arguably surpassed by Raven.

If we have one thing that no one has matched so far its our performance against Katarou where we were able to pin him down despite him having the Gauntlet of Atlas. But that's not a place we want to visit again if possible.

Instead, KC's strength, at least in terms of beating up badguys, can and should come from how he integrates all his strengths into a whole.

"Great game, Rose," you tell your friend.

Your words seem to somewhat snap her out of it, and she steadily calms down from whatever terrifying rage she was apparently experiencing. Her face is still kind of red, though if it's still anger, or now embarrassment, you aren't sure.

"Thanks..." she tells you.

"You look thirsty," you tell her. "Come on, I'll buy you a soda."

She nods in agreement with that, starting toward the snack bar, only stopping when she remembers that there was a third person here with the two of you.

"Are you coming, Donna?" she asks.

Donna shakes her head. "No thanks, I'm good. I'll wait here for the two of you to get back."

The knowing look in her eye is comforting. She knows you're not just ditching her. And, if you can speak to Rose privately, the angry girl might be more comfortable opening up to you.

Once you think you're out of earshot of anyone else, you quietly ask Rose if she's alright.

"Yeah..." she sighs, not sounding very convincing. "I just...I lost my temper, I'm sorry."

She calms quickly and waits for you to continue.

"If you ever need anything, or to just talk to or chill with someone, let me know," you offer.

Her expression softens considerably after that. "You really mean that?"

You nod, both curious and concerned as to why she even needs to ask that. It might be tied to her anger issues, but you'll find out if she decides to actually confide in you sometime in the future.

"Thank you," she says before looking toward the snack bar. "Come on, you owe me a soda."

After buying her a drink, you walk with her back to the arcade machine, where Donna is waiting just like she said she'd be.

"I'll take you on," you declare, letting Rose drink her soda while you step up to join Donna at the machines.

"Alright then, good luck," your dark-haired friend tells you, putting a token in the machine.

You do the same, and the game begins, with the two of you performing quite well together. Donna's not as good as Rose, but she's got good reflexes and aim, allowing her to do a great job of shooting down enemies. Still, you're able to outperform her, your prior experience with fire-arms coming in handy and allowing you to take apart your virtual foes with greater efficiency.

The two of you progress through the game, with each of you taking a bit of damage here and there, but without either of you needing to put in another token until you're about halfway through. Unlike last time with Rose, when you look over at Donna, she doesn't have any anger on her face. She's focused, though that sometimes gives way to smiles or laughter as the two of you blast your way through level after level, eventually defeating the end boss and completing the game.

"Good game," Donna congratulates you, not seeming bothered that you beat her by a considerable margin.

"You too," you tell your friend, offering a high five.

Donna high fives you, smiling wider. She's definitely being a good sport about losing, though you wonder if that's her own choice, or simply due to seeing how Rose has been acting tonight. In either case, it's a nice change from last time.

Where to go from here? The claw machine could be fun. The girls would probably happy if you could win them some prizes. You're about to make the suggestion when your communicator goes off in your pocket. Some buzzing from Donna's pants, and Rose's..well, you aren't sure where she's keeping hers, tells you that they're getting the same communication.

The three of you start looking for a place to take this privately. Hopefully whatever this is can wait that long. In the end, you decide to go over by the broken down whack-a-mole game that nobody seems to be anywhere near. You open your communicator first, finding yourself greeted by Robin's face.

"Peter, sorry to interrupt your night at the arcade, but I just got a report from the police about an incident only a block from where the three of you are," he explains quickly. "I want you three to go there, then send me some images of the scene. The coordinates have already been sent to your communicators."

"Got it," Rose declares, looking at hers.

"As do I," Donna confirms.

"Get there as quickly as you can, and try not to draw too much attention to yourselves if you want your identities to stay secret," Robin instructs. "Good luck."

The communication ends, and the three of you rush for the exit, quickly making your way to the specified location. There are multiple police cars present, and their lights illuminate various officers that are working to block off the scene.

The three of you reach the edge of the police line, and try to get a look at what's going on. A busy intersection is being blocked off, though you see no signs of an accident.

"Up there!" Donna points.

Following her finger, you find yourself looking at the street light hanging over the intersection, or, more specifically, the person dangling from it. You can't see them too clearly, though you can vaguely make out the color yellow, and what looks like a sign hanging from their neck. Their arms are tied to the light, and their body dangles right over the intersection.

"Hera..." Donna gasps.

"Any idea who that is?" Rose asks.

"No clue," you answer. "But maybe Robin will know."

Pulling out your communicator, you do what Robin asked, and begin snapping images of the individual hanging from the streetlight. You use the zoom feature on your camera, but don't much bother with your flashlight, both because you aren't entirely sure that it's necessary, and because it might draw some attention toward you. Once you're satisfied that you've gathered enough, you send the pictures to Robin, putting away your communicator and waiting for the girls to do the same.

Less than two minutes pass before your communicators go off again, though this time, all you receive is a text message.

"Return to tower immediately."

"Sounds like he found something," Donna remarks, starting in the direction of the tower right away.

You and Rose follow behind, racing toward home as fast as you can without the use of your powers. You half-wish you'd gone in disguise at this point, but it can't be helped. There's really no way you could have known something like this would happen, after all. Besides, it's a good work-out. Donna and Rose don't seem to mind, either, though everyone has an air of urgency about them, making haste in the journey back to the tower.

Eventually, feeling that you've made it close enough, you grab the girls by their shoulders and teleport the three of you the rest of the way to the tower. You appear right at the entrance, and quickly rush inside, the three of you joining the others in the living room, where a series of the images you sent to Robin are displayed on the large monitor.

They've been enhanced and filtered to give a better look at the person; a young man in a yellow suit bearing the mark of the HIVE, though his seems outdated in comparison to those your old friends wear these days. You also see what looks like a shield with the HIVE logo on it strapped to one of his arms. The sign hanging from his neck is visible now, with three words written on it in red.

"Defiance is death"

"Sergeant HIVE," Robin identifies the man. "Formerly of the HIVE Academy, briefly associated with the Brotherhood of Evil, and current acting leader of the HIVE FIVE."

"He doesn't look very active now," Beast Boy remarks.

"Yeah, Robin," Cyborg says to the team leader. "Is he even alive?"

"None of us were in a position to find that out," Robin answers, scrolling through text on a smaller monitor before typing away. "But I should have an answer from the police department within the next few minutes."

"That message is not reassuring," Raven tells him. "It would lose some serious power if he's still alive."

>>A. "Any idea who could have done this?"

"Is this Blood?" you suggest. "Sending a message to me, or maybe the old HIVE FIVE? Maybe he wants them back."

"Could be," Cyborg admits. "Three of them were his top students back in the HIVE academy."

"Should we check on Jinx?" you ask.

Robin doesn't look away from the screen. "Good idea. Cyborg, contact Jinx and Kid Flash, tell them what we've found and warn them to be on alert."

"Can do," Cyborg responds, getting up and leaving the room as he pulls out his communicator to make the call.

"Peter should also be on the lookout for the Brother Blood, yes?" Starfire questions.

"That goes without saying," Robin answers, still not looking away from his screen. "But remember, we don't know for sure that Blood did this."

"Oh, come on, who else would do it?" Beast Boy demands.

"I'm not sure," Robin admits, turning his attention from the small monitor to the larger one. "But this kind of thing reminds me of some of the gangs back in Gotham. Falcone, Black Mask, Two-Face, they'd do this kind of thing as a warning. But, they were usually bloodier about it."

"We don't have any gangs like that in Jump City, do we?" Donna asks him.

"We haven't," Robin answers. "Nothing anywhere near that large, anyway. But activity's been up over the past few months, mostly in the arms and drug trade."

"Well, why haven't we been doing anything about that, then?" Raven questions.

Robin finally looks at the group again. "The police wanted to handle it themselves. They figured it was something they could take care of alone, so we could focus on bigger threats."

"How bad's it been getting?" you ask.

"It's been consistently getting worse," Robin tells you. "Which is why the police have been in contact with me. Bigger hauls coming in through the docks, gang recruitment at an all-time high, more cocaine moving through this city over the past few months than in the last ten years combined, reports of protection rackets, supposed bribing of officers. It's starting to resemble something a lot worse than some street gangs."

"Maybe I should stick around Jump City a little longer," Rose suggests. "I can bust a few heads and find out what's going on."

"I'm not sure that's the best idea," Robin tells her. "You're largely unknown to the police, meaning they might treat you as a super criminal. Besides, we don't know how powerful these gangs have become, so if we're going to move against them, we should do it together and count on safety in numbers."

"What, you think I can't handle it?" Rose challenges, her voice becoming irate.

Robin's eyes narrow. "I'm going to ask you to calm down."

The two stare each other down for another few seconds before Rose finally looks away.

"Sorry..." she tells him.

Robin turns back to the monitors. "I know that everyone here can handle themselves, but we don't know what kind of situation we're dealing with. Blood's still out there with who-knows how many agents looking to hunt us down, and we have no idea about the gangs and what they can do. They might be easy to deal with, or they could be really dangerous. Until we know more, I don't want anybody going one-person army out there."

"Friend Rose, why not simply stay with us as part of the team?" Starfire offers hopefully. "Your combat prowess would surely be of great help in-"

"I can't," Rose cuts her off. "I'm sorry, but I still have some things to work out before I can join for real."

"Rose, we're your friends," Beast Boy tells her. "And we've all got plenty of issues. We've helped each other through them, so let us help you."

Rose crosses her arms, sighing and looking down. "I'll stick around in the city for a bit in case you need my help. I have a safe-house I can stay in for at least a week."

"Why don't you just stay here?" Donna suggests.

"Because I'm not part of the team," Rose answers. "And the longer I stay here, the harder it's going to be to leave."

Her head stays down, but her eyes move up. "It's late, so I'll spend the night. But tomorrow, I'm heading out."

"We understand," Robin tells her. "But, our door's always open for you."

"I know," Rose replies quietly.

Robin nods, then turns back to the screen. "I'll be here for a while getting what information I can. You should all get some rest; there's no telling what tomorrow will bring."

Raven vanishes in a black light, while Beast Boy hops off the sofa, yawns, and heads for the doors, which open to reveal Cyborg. You can hear Beast Boy explain the situation to your other friend, who looks to Robin, then turns and heads back out, probably going to his room.

Starfire approaches Robin, and you're pretty sure she'll be staying up with him for as long as she can. Rose, meanwhile, turns to you and Donna, then steps forward and pulls you both into a hug.

"Thanks for tonight, guys," she tells you before pulling back. "I had fun."

"So did I," Donna tells her with a smile.

Anyone. Every option is fun.

"Anytime," you tell her. "And next time, I'll find a way to out-dance you girls."

They both smile at that, though Donna seems the most amused.

"It wouldn't be the first time you've surprised me, Peter," your dark-haired friend comments with a chuckle. "But, I don't know. You're good, but I'm not sure you can keep up with us."

"Dancing and shooting, I know I've got you beat there, Pete," Rose tells you. "Oh, and sparring."

It's less gloating, and more good-natured teasing from the two of them, which tells you that they consider you close enough to poke fun without worrying. It's nice to know that you've made a good impression on them.

"Well, goodnight," Rose says after the laughter dies down. "I'll make sure I say goodbye before I leave tomorrow."

She turns and walks to the doors, stepping through and making her way to the guest room for the evening.

"I think tonight meant a lot to her," Donna tells you once Rose is safely out of earshot. "You did a good thing, suggesting a night doing something other than fighting."

>>A. "Everybody needs to take a break and have fun sometimes."

>>B. "Well, she got super competitive, but yeah, this was probably a nice change of pace for her."

Donna grins. "Thanks, Peter. Anyway, I'm going to get some sleep. Thank you for a fun night."

She leaves the room, and you're not far behind, going to your own room to lie down and get some sleep.

>To be continued

This is where we'll call it quits for tonight. I hope you all had fun, and that this makes up for my sub-par session last night.

My twitter is @INSTIGATORQST if you want to keep up to date on session plans

As always, I welcome feedback and discussion, and hope to see you all next time.

Thank you all for playing.

Thanks for running! And last night's game session was fine, just short.

I mean it's only been about one day in Peter's time but this quest has been so comfy lately I'm bracing for an ass-kicking. Here's hoping Pete and friends can prevent Jump City from becoming Gotham West.

I'm currently reading through the archives now, and while I'm really enjoying this, I wanted to pop in and ask if the railroading gets toned down later on.

So far Peter's ability to teleport has been made useless by author fiat. He spends all his energy to teleport halfway accross the city, suddenly Kardiac is there. He tries to escape a room with his old teammates and is immediately captured. That's just for teleporting, mind. There are more situations where something is made to happen pretty much regardless of the choices players have made.

My favorite scene so far was probably the movie night. It was such a chill scene in comparison to everything else, and I loved that. He didn't worry about his past, or throw it away. He was just living in the moment.

On an unrelated note, I'm surprised no one has called out Brother Blood on how shitty of an impression he made. While people are voting pretty hard to forget the past, it would have very easy to make a case that this stemmed from Brother Blood's fuckup and threats to erase and remake Peter's mind.
>>
>>2343548
Throwing that at Blood might get an amusing reaction out of him, but dude's an egomaniac and will just take that to mean that he has a mistake to avoid next time, and that he won't possible fail in the future.
>>
>>2343548
Huh. I didn't really notice those while in the midst of playing the quest, but you have fair points. I suppose I don't mind it that much, since things feel pretty fair, and where we fail, I'm left with the sense that we can remedy our weaknesses if we take the time to do so.

MoG, I'm curious about your QMing philosophy, regarding balancing story and player choice. I was one of the people trying to teleport out of the Neu HIVE fight, and while I was moderately annoyed that you interpreted the teleport choice to mean 'just outside the fighting space but still within reach of their weapons', in retrospect I suppose just booking it would have fizzled that scene (or, at least, delay it).

Also, re: Blood taking criticism and simply using it to make sure he gets his way next time, I wonder if we could make that backfire on him, if we were to convince him the mistake to be fixed was not an action or a choice, but something fundamental in his psychology, ideally something that is also the source of his villainy. The man was willing to sacrifice his flesh for metal because he saw it as advantageous to do so. I fully believe Blood would perform psychic neurosurgery on himself if he felt that he could 'correct' a source of his failures.
>>
>>2343568
Depending on how you spin that, it just might work. Though, Blood being convinced of his own inferiority by the words of another is something extremely difficult to pull off.
>>
>>2343572
Such an argument would need to rest on something that is true and self evident, even to a megalomaniac, or something that feeds into his worldview. If true, there's always the risk that he might make himself a more effective villain based on your advice, even if he's less dangerous in some other way.

For instance, his megalomania legitimately causes him to take unnecessary risks and to underestimate his opponents. Were he to excise that part of himself, he may well no longer feel driven to the grandiose villainy that he currently favors. The flipside is that if he remains a villain, his crimes may be more successful, even if they're more mundane.

Clearly the best way to beat him is to cultivate good emotional health and have psychic powers stronger than his, such that his goal becomes becoming an emotionally healthy man, leading to his sudden retirement and new interest in being a veterinary.
>>
>>2343594
I don't see that happening, but who knows? Maybe you guys will come up with the perfect argument.
>>
>>2343596
We just need Speech 100 to defeat the final boss. Just like Fallout!
>>
>>2343594
Easy. Manage to overpower him inside his own head, and then pull a Jean Grey.
>>
>>2344657
Die but be replaced by a clone of yourself?
>>
>>2344675
No, make him gay.
>>
If you guys make Blood gay, can you at least figure out how to get him to stop watching Peter shower first?
>>
>>2344709
Why? Next up we get Constantine or Jason Blood to find us a girdle of femininity

My long term plan is genius.
