Welcome back to Gladiator Quest!

Previous thread: >>2327601

Last time we left our gladiator, Gerhard, a Germanic killer in brutal combat against a horrible monster that arrived via the Well at our gladiator academy. Before that, we’d killed three men and met our master and a few other gladiators in our academy. We also met the blacksmith and he’s working on a sweet Bident for us.

I rolled a 68 in the last thread so that will be the DC for the next update, which will be a repost of the last update from the previous thread because I didn’t notice it had autosaged.
>>
You crouch low and slowly back away from this beast, keeping the tip of your javelin pointed directly at it.

“Come on then! I’ll wear your skin in my next match!” You tense as it seems the creature understands you. It chitters hatefully and you can see it’s muscles readying for a leap.

The creature propels itself into the air with inhuman strength but it isn’t leaping directly at you. You’ve seen the lycanthropes that hunt the forests of your home slay men with the same trick. The creature leaps slightly to your left, intending for you to stab at it and miss and then give you a nasty swipe with its claws.

You roll as it leaps and bring your spear up into its underbelly in three quick strikes. Each strike penetrates the skin, though not at deep as you like as the creature twists away from the head of the javelin. You roar in defiance as you step back, giving yourself the distance to strike again. “Child’s play! Can you not even land a single strike?!” The creature howls in response, preparing to attack once more.

You notice that men are becoming emboldened by how handily you’re cutting through this beast and slowly inch forward with weapons in hand.

Men gather around you and the large creature bearing torches and swords. For the first time you get a good look at this beast. It’s body is covered in a layer of thin and flexible chitinous scales that vary in shade between motley greens and oily blacks dotted with the fresh wounds you’ve given it, along with several dozen other small wounds. It’s torso is vaguely humanoid in shape but massively oversized. The limbs are long and lean and it seems like each joint is free moving like your shoulder, instead of fixed like a knee or elbow. It moves slowly along the ground, it’s eyes flickering between you, the encroaching men, and the well it climbed through. The way it moves is unsettling, it’s limbs moving in unnatural circles as it paces and it’s body held so low to the ground it looks more like its climbing horizontally instead of crawling. The eyes of the creature are reptilian in nature, and they sit deep within a head the shape of a crocodile’s but with the features of a large insect, it’s mouth a series of proboscis that click and hiss and wriggle incessantly.

The men get closer, ready to join the fray and you call out. “No! This beast is mine! If anyone so much as touches my kill I will add their corpse to the pile!”

The closest group of men stare at you in shock but slowly retreat, convinced by the mad look in your eye of the authenticity of your claim.

The creature fixes its gaze on you once more, seemingly accepting your imposed duel. You grin, who knew that somewhere so far away from your lands could you feel so at home.

You bring your javelin around as the creature begins to prowl its circle around you once again. You shift in a way that shows unsteadiness in an attempt to bait the creature into attacking and it sends a probing swipe of its claws in your direction.

You answer the swipe by putting metal into its clawed hand. The tip of your weapon darts forward and penetrates the hide of the creature, digging through muscles and tissues and skirting between bone until it erupts from the flesh on the top of its hand. With a fluid motion you pull the steel free, leaving a viewport in the beasts palm before it quickly fills with that same ichor as the rest of its wounds. The things proboscis flare with anger and slap wetly against each other but it retreats a few paces back.

Rolled 14 (1d100)

As the beast slowly paces backwards, you explode forward with both hands on your javelin ready to impale the foul thing.

It swipes at you, desperately trying to drive you back, but you roll under one swing and leap to the side of another. You bellow with rage as you drive your spear forward.

The tip again bites flesh, finding the same shoulder joint you’d already wounded and turning a serious hole into a ragged and gaping wound.

The creature quickly unleashes a flurry of swipes that drive you back but you can tell that its end is near. It keeps its wounded side away from you and doesn’t bear any weight on it as blood pours from the wound.

You see fear creep into its eyes as some of its rage dissipates but you know better, fighting when backed into a corner and desperate is the most bitter of fighting.

The men around you stare on in horror as you savagely attack a creature they had every right to fear and you can feel their fear of the monster shift to instead being afraid of you. You spit onto the black blood stained stones. “Let us finish this!” You hunch down, gripping your weapon tightly as you ready for the next clash.

You guys have pretty much established yourself as top dog from this, I did not expect it to go this well. These monsters were supposed to be something the local garrisons would send two squads of legionaries to deal with. The one you’re fighting wasn’t fully grown and it did have a decent amount of damage done to it by someone or something else but it’s still enough to make locals shit themselves.

You drive forward one last time, slipping past the beasts clumsy defenses.

You go to drive your spear into the beast and it gives one final leap, the head of the javelin brushing a thin line down its side. Your strike does minimal damage but on top of all the other wounds and the blood loss, you can tell this beast is spent. You spin to face your opponent, the haze of battle leaving nothing but this dying beast in your sights. You twirl your javelin with a flourish. The time has come to end this.

Men, your fellow gladiators in Battius’ service, watch in horror as you stalk close to a beast they had been told stories of to keep them in line as children. If they survive long enough to father any, they will instead tell tells of you to scare their children into obedience.

You draw close to the beast and it lashes out once more, it’s claws trying to drive you away. You do not falter, you turn the blow aside with the tip of the javelin and continue advancing. Proboscis chitter in pain and fear and eyes grow wide as you revel in what is about to come.

You lower your spear and raise a free hand in a placating gesture. “Shhh.” You speak loud enough for everyone close to hear you. “Easy, you fought well. Shhhh.”

The creature looks confused but seems to relax slightly. You grin down at it. Your fellow gladiators stare on, just as confused as the beast.

You step forward, your hand still raised as if you would pet this dying monstrosity. “You fought well. But like anything that would face me...” a cold glint fills your eye. “You must die.”

Like the bite of a viper the tip of your javelin rockets forward and buries itself in the eye socket of the beast, killing it instantly.

The crowd stares on in stunned silence and you make eye contact with each one and know that they feel fear. Just as you wrench your weapon free, Atticus bursts through the ring of observers with a sword in each hand. Meanwhile from the opposite side comes Brennus clutching a smiths hammer with all of his might.

Atticus stalks forward. “What trickery is this? No man could kill a beskam on his own. Even a younger one such as this. Who helped you?”

You pull your javelin back and sending it sailing towards the target you retrieved it from, which just so happens to be in Atticus’ general direction.

Satisfied when the weapon sinks into the bundle of straw, and with Atticus’ impotent rage as he dives out of its way, you turn on your heel towards Brennus. “My friend, I have quite the trophy here! Tell me what we can make from my kill.”

The big blacksmith hobbles forward. “Well fuck, let me take a look and see.” He inches close to the corpse and gently nudges it with his good foot. His knuckles go white around his hammer as if he expects the creature to leap up in response. “By the gods. A Beskam.” He hunches oddly, his approximation of kneeling with a bad leg, and begins to examine the body. “Beskam’s skin is unique. It’s a series of linked scales like a lizard would have but each scale is made up of layers of something like an exoskeleton like an insect.” He runs his hand over the surface of the Beskam’s torso. “You were lucky to grabbed the Javelin instead of my hammer. These scales are tough, I could hammer on them all day and not have done what you just did... and they’re pretty resistant to a slash too, if I’m remembering right.” For emphasis he brings his hammer one handed down on the corpses side and the scale comes away unharmed. “When I was an apprentice in Rome, I watched a man make a set of lorica squamata from Beskam scale. I could probably replicate his design. He used sheeps wool to pad the inside, to prevent the force of the blow from breaking bones...” Brennus looks up at you, obviously deep in thought. “Yes, I could make you some, we’ve got enough here for me to make a mistake or two and still have enough to make you a set.” You nod. “How long? And those claws, could a weapon be...” You’re interrupted by Atticus, you notice he has the sense to have sheathed his twin blades. “I will not be ignored! I am your superior on these grounds! Who helped you accomplish this!” You look back at Brennus. “Maybe a blade of some kind?” The blacksmith stands and looks between you and Atticus nervously. “I’ll try, maybe I can cook up something. I’ll focus on the armor first.” He ducks his head and backs away as Atticus begins to shout again. “Battius will hear how disobedient his newest Northern slave is!” You watch as Brennus directs several men to drag the corpse towards his forge. You step towards Atticus and...

You step toward Atticus, getting close enough that he can feel your breath on his face and his breath in yours. You can feel the tension roll off of him, he’s expecting a fight. “Ask them. Your brothers in arms will tell you the truth.” Before he can respond you laugh and step around him. “Has my skill stolen your voices? Or does Atticus here cut out your tongues so he can hear himself speak better? Tell your ‘champion’ what you have witnessed! Explain that there is nothing that goes bump in that night that you fear any longer, for you have seen something much worse.”

You stride confidently from the loose ring formed by your spectating gladiator brethren, Atticus’ calls and shouts falling on deaf ears.

You make your way down the long hall of the sleeping quarters, bits of arms and armor litter it’s floor and doors hang open from the men who woke and readied themselves to face an unknown danger. You pass the privy, hearing the sound of men cowering inside instead of rising to face the calls of the alarms. You make your way into your small chambers and draw the thin curtain shut.

Where a normal man would be shaking as the adrenaline left them and exhaustion set in you find only pleasure. Another being felled by your hand, another battle won. You dip your hands into the cool water of your wash basin and clean sweat and ichor from your body. Sleep finds you with a grin on your face some time later, eager for the battles to come.

You awaken from sunlight filtering in through your window. The sun barely peaks from behind the horizon but it fills the room with warmth. You rise and find the servants have left clean leathers for the day and have refilled and refreshed your water basin. You dress leisurely, the leather cloaking your manhood, thighs, and little more. You make your way back to the training grounds, sunlight beating down on your bare chest and back.

Battius stands at the edge of the ring, watching as two men grapple against Ildutas, the half ogre that fought alongside you in your first bout in the arena. You’ve just arrived but it’s obvious that Ildutas is winning.

Battius turns, regarding you casually. “Are you really a man? Or some demon come to enjoy every ounce of slaughter the arena can provide?” He laughs. “Not that I care, either way I’ll enjoy every gold coin that falls into my hand because of you.” He turned back to the wrestlers. “No you damned fool! You can’t overpower him, use that damned thing between your ears! The gods must have slighted you when they did but they still gave you something to think with!”

His attention shifts back to you. “Atticus organizes most of the training here, and soon enough you may report like the rest of them. For now though... I think you are to be afforded the choice for yourself. We do not need to teach you to kill, like many here. We do not need to teach you to think when the rush of confrontation is upon you, that is obvious. What then?”

So far we have being prettt descent against 1v1 folks and we did get lucky agaunst the two that attacked us when we faced in the arena. Groups of man and beast can easily overpower us and demans we use more of our brain. Also i believe we didn't hunt solo in the old country before so i don't see a need to train in cooperation.

Yay. I did it coach!

So We start off rather poorly, but become better and better at fighting several opponents at once.
>>
You look Battius square in the eye. “I want to show you that it should have been just me against the seven in my first bout. Bring me as many men as you can spare.” Battius smiles pleasantly at your answer. “It shall be so.”

You spent the remainder of the morning hacking through straw targets as Battius sent for men to face you. The sun had already begun its slow descent by the time the first of them trickled in. Three men too scared to even meet your eye when you spoke to them. Your first bouts with them provided both side with no experience, they were too afraid from the previous nights display to pose any challenge to you. You went to bed that night with the bitter taste of trouncing cowards in your mouth.

The next morning a fourth man had joined your group of opponents, he was young and brash and unafraid and inspired the rest to rise and face you. Four men circled around you with blunted swords and spears as you danced between their strikes, trading their blows with your own from a blunted bident. The young man with bright red hair cheered when he landed a lucky strike on the back of your calf and deadened your leg. He was quick to take your hand and pull you back to your feet. “I’m Aedan, nice to meet ya you horrific fuck, bloody good work on that thing the ot’her night. I was sharing my bed with some lovely Roman’s wife, ot’herwise I’d have joined in with ya.” You grin as you shake out the ache from your bruised leg. “Lucky for you, you would’ve gotten sliced to bits with that sloppy footwork of yours.” He grins back. “Sloppy enough to catch you.”

The rest of the day and the following two are similar, you batted the four men but one of them eventually lands a lucky strike or two. You come to learn all of their names. Godjo, a Nubian with a lighting quick spear strike and a quiet manner. Alexander, the youngest of the group, hailed from Judea and quickly adopted a bident after seeing you use one. Gunther, an old man by gladiator standards and a fellow northerner, though he was Goth stock, proved quite clever with a sword.

After the fourth day, you started to pull ahead even as their coordination grew. You had learned the rythym of being surrounded, being harassed to try and make you leave an opening for another to exploit, being forced in the direction one of them wanted. The men’s fear of you was slowly tempered with respect though it was still abundantly present in most of their actions. The only one who did not succumb to your aura of fear was Aedan, who quickly established himself as a worthy opponent even as you trounced him and his allies.

By the end of the two weeks you had not only learned the ins and outs of four on one combat, well on the road to mastering facing groups of men and coming out relatively unscathed while leaving them bloodied, but you had quickly found your mastery of the bident and several other weapons had grown.

>cont

>> got b& for a post I didn’t make?

You also noticed that the men you were working with were among the few who could bare to look you in the eye without shaking from fear and that was only because they respected you enough to meet your gaze.

Battius was incredibly happy with how your training had went, not only had you gotten better but now he also had four gladiators drilled into fighting as a team against a superior opponent. Meanwhile Atticus watched and did his best to diminish each of our successes.

Finally the day you would get back into the arena was at hand. Men were gathering their equipment or saying prayers to their gods when Battius found you. “Usually a man going into his second fight would get a tunic and sword, but you have shown to be worth more of an investment. I’ve told Brennus to gather several choices for you on top of the trophy weapons and armor he’s crafted for you.” He looked you up and down once more before grinning. “Gods favor us today, go make me some coin!”

After he left you, you found your way to Brennus who had several bits of weapon and armor laying out for you to pick from. “I tried to pick weapons I'd seen you using over the past few days, hope I’ve done well. Battius said you could take two. And! I got your bident finished, and a decent amount of the Beskam scale fashioned into coverings for you. The cuirass isn’t done yet but your arms and legs will be covered at least.”

You look over the assembled equipment and without a thought you grab the axe. You test it’s weight by giving it a few test swings, test its edge by running a finger across its length. It’s well weighted and sharp enough that your fingertip comes away with a small cut. “Fine work, yours?” Brennus nods. “I’ve always loved a good axe.”

You make your way over the table, eyeing the helmet. It’s traditional gladiator style, a cage around your head with a wide round brim. You’re tempted until you notice the shield. A large oval of thick wood banded with steel, big enough to cover your entire body should you hunch slightly but light enough to carry one handed. Currently the face of the shield is the same blue as your tunics from your previous time in the arena and as you pick it up to test the weight Brennus comments. “You bring that thing back to me and I can have it painted however you’d like.” You nod as you heft the axe in one hand and the shield in the other, shifting your stance and taking a few practice swings with the axe or shoves with the shield. “These will do.” Brennus smiles wide. “But, I come bearing gifts! Excuse me.” The bear of a blacksmith slips away and returns with a large bundle.

He slowly unwraps it and reveals a beautifully crafted bident, your beautifully crafted bident along with a pair of greaves and vambraces fitted to you. “Take a look! The inside edge of the prongs on the bident I put a very minor serration on, it’ll help catch weapons and tear them out of their soon to be dead owners hands!” He laughs as he hands you the two pronged spear. You feel the rough toothed edge and smile, it will cause ragged wounds as well. The shorter length of the haft feels good in your hands and it ringed with steel at the end and two points equidistant from each other and either end of the wood. “Those are so it’s hard to chop the damn thing in half, I won’t have my work sundered with such ease.”

You nod andhe begins to pull for your armor. The mottled green and oily black scales are arranged in a beautiful pattern. “These took some serious effort but I think you’ll be happy with them, might be a little warm in them though.” He grins and shows you the sheeps wool lining. “You’ll sweat in it but the lining will help absorb the force of a hit, and keep you comfortable. You don’t want it to chafe your important bits.” He laughs again as you inspect them. This armor is unlike any you’ve seen before, it’s incredibly lightweight but you’d seen Brennus testing the durability of the scales over the past two weeks and they were nothing to laugh about. “I’ll have the rest finished sometime soon, and I’m still working on what to do with those claws, but I apologize I couldn’t finish it before today.”

You wave a hand. “This is beautiful work, I’ll be back for the rest when it’s done.”

The smith nods. “Damn well better be, I’d hate to see this work go to waste.” He laughs and you take your leave, wrapping your items in the bundle and resting it on top of your shield.

You make you way to the carts that are taking everyone who will be fighting in the arena. You see the men you had trained with already aboard one of the carts and the men you’d shared the arena with two weeks ago loading into a second cart. Atticus climbs into a more comfortable wagon along with Guis, his toadie, and closes the door behind them. You find an open spot in the third cart, only a few other men are inside and each gives you a wide berth.

Once everyone is seated and their equipment stowed with them Battius makes an appearance. “All of you have been selected to fight today because I believe in you. By nightfall tonight you will be in your home away from home. We will have left our beautiful house here in the countryside for our city within a city. You will be in the pits! Killing and maiming and winning! I selected all of you because I know that you will all return here with me, richer and stronger than ever before!” He brings forth a hearty cheer and you try to hide your incredulousness, half of these men will die horrible deaths at least.

The cart bumps along for the remainder of the day, you rest and watch countryside roll by and turn into more urban landscapes.

You are surprised when, instead of heading straight to the arena, the cart turns into the courtyard of a rather large villa within the city. Men who have fought before disembark and make their way inside. Aedan catches your eye and waves you over. “Battius has the underground section of his home turned into quarters for us, you can claim an empty room cause they’re all the same here.” He leads you to a set of stairs that descends into the earth. “His servants cook meals for us in the courtyard we arrived in and the arena is a short walk from here, only men he trusts are allowed to stay here instead but of there. Also, if you fight well, he hosts the noble and rich women of the city for you to pleasure upstairs. I’ve been requested by three of them.” He grins as he leaves you and heads down the stairs. Battius catches you before you descend. “Gerhard, speak with me.”

You make your way to a second smaller courtyard filled with flowers and plants of all kinds. “You are to be born anew tomorrow. You will begin your career as my fighter, you will need a name. A name that tells the crowds who you are, shows them what you can do, and captures their minds and hearts. I will allow you to chose.”
