In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

Last time on Overwatch Quest:

You travelled to the Australian outback, where you quickly ended up in trouble with the wasteland raiders of Junkertown. You were bailed out by the timely appearance of Junkrat and Roadhog, and somewhat reluctantly agreed to help them on a job. After several car chases and a death-defying ride through a massive sandstorm, you managed to get clear of your pursuers. Tracer and McCree have accepted the truce for now, and together you plan to aid the Junkers in their heist on Junkertown. Perhaps with your assistance there'll be less collateral damage.
>>

What enlightened opinions. Freelancers is fun, and don't knock Thug Quest until you've tried it. It's super good, and the title's kinda ironic.

"At least, that's what I said to Tracer," you tell Genji. "That if we help Junkrat and Roadhog with this job of theirs, we might be able to keep civilians out of it. And it's true. But there's also the fact that I owe them one, and -- well, against my better judgement, they're beginning to grow on me, the rascals."

The two of you are walking down a road in the shanty settlement surrounding Junkertown, the Queen's fortress and home to hundreds of brutal outlaws and bushrangers. Out here, in these ramshackle dwellings made of scrap metal and shipping containers, are ordinary people with nowhere left to go, trying to scratch out a living meeting the needs of the raiders.

"They are a lively pair," Genji agrees. He pulls the hood of his desert robe a little lower as a rowdy group passes by. In a place that hates Omnics so much, they might not appreciate the difference between a robot and a full cyborg. So far no-one has challenged him. "Your plan is fine. For now, at least. But what will you do after?"

"After?"

"When the job is complete, and our truce with Junkrat and his "bodyguard" is over. Talon is plotting something in the Outback, and these two are surely a part of it. Not to mention they are wanted criminals." Genji's green visor glints as it angles towards you. "I will support your decision, Seeker. It would be unfitting of us both to look down on those with a criminal past. But the others may not see it that way, and we still have to stop Talon. I just hope that you are thinking this through."

"Regarding Talon, I'm hoping I can get something out of the Junkers to use against them. I'm not sure if this job they want to pull on Junkertown is part of what Talon is planning or not, but either way, it's our best lead right now. As for those two, when this is over ..."

"If you work with someone, and then turn on them the moment the job's finished," you say, then pause. "I don't know. It seems like even if they're criminals, it would mean that nobody is going to stick their neck out to help us again. Or at least it'll make them think twice about it. I'm going to give those two a chance to come over to our side. Do some good in the world for a change. Bribe, cajole, threaten, whatever. If it doesn't work, well, I guess I'll let them go."

"If you do, we may have to fight them again before this is over," Genji points out.

"I know," you say. "It's not the smart thing to do, or the pragmatic one. But sometimes you have to go with what feels right."

You and Genji take shelter from the sun underneath the awning of a wreckyard shop labelled "Bruce's". A squat elderly man with a big gut eyes you suspiciously as he tweaks an engine with a multitool. Just an ordinary guy, try to get by in this harsh land. Exactly the sort of person you're hoping to protect from Junkrat's crazy scheme.

You take out the crudely scrawled map that Junkrat made for you earlier, pointing out the various entry points into the fortress that looms over the settlement. Your destination is the sub-basement, but they'll have more security the lower you get. Whatever you do, you've got to try and keep things on the down-low for now while Junkrat and the others get into position for their part of the plan.

You and Genji make your way through the streets to the Junkertown wall, and follow it along until you come to the hidden side entrance, disguised to look like an ordinary part of the wall. It's heavily fortified against direct attack, but for someone who's used to cracking open high-tech corporate security systems, disabling the camera and breaking the lock's code is no sweat. Genji keeps an eye out while you work, so you can focus on your task. Soon enough you've got the door open, without any alarms going off that you can hear. Good start. You and the cyber-ninja slip through the door and shut it behind you.

Inside is a long, dimly-lit hallway with exposed piping along the right side. In front of you is a T-intersection, and you can hear voices from that direction. To your left is a stairway leading down into the basement levels.

Before you head downstairs where your communications might be disrupted by who knows what energy fields, you activate your radio. "Infiltration starting now. Looks good so far. How's your end?"

"These two are driving me up the wall," Tracer says, sounding cross. In the background you can hear Junkrat rambling. "The smell is unbelievable. Why do I have to play babysitter instead of going on a cool infiltration of a secret base with you and Genji?"

"The world needs heroes, Tracer," you say. "Today you are that hero. How are their disguises?"

"See for yourself," she says, snapping a picture with her goggles and sending it to you. You bring it up on the inside of your helmet and have a chuckle at their ludicrous outfits.

"Nice. All right, we're heading into the basement. Good luck," you say, and add:

>I'm counting on you.
>Stay alert. Keep those two focused on the plan, don't let them try anything.
>Let's grab a drink after we're done here. My turn to pick the movie.

"Maybe I should wear a big shark head too on my next job," you muse. "Psychological warfare. Talon would never suspect a thing."

"Not sure that one's in the Overwatch handbook," Tracer says.

"That's why they'd never see it coming."

"Orright, enough of you, goofball. Get on with the mission so I can take off this stupid hood. Try and make it out in one piece this time, willya?"

"I'll do my best. Keep an eye on those two and make sure they stick to the plan. I'm counting on you."

"Y-you betcha," she says, suddenly sounding embarassed, and cuts the line.

You and Genji make your way down the stairs into the basement, a series of long metal hallways connecting storage areas, maintenace access shafts, and vast networks of pipes and wires. Below this is the sub-basement, the furnaces and generators, the beating heart of the vast fortress and complex known as Junkertown, and your destination. Before you can get there, though, you've got to get through this area.

Genji listens carefully, trying to hear any voices or footsteps over the hum of ventilation and the growl of the power generators deep below your feet. "I can hear four -- no, five. Almost certainly more." He takes the point position and leads the way down a series of halls. Soon you emerge into a huge room with blocky projections at intervals along the walls. A group of gunmen in distinctive red and black outfits and masks are standing near each other, two of them talking while the third remains alert with his rifle at the ready.

"Talon ops," you say, crouching behind Genji. "Just like Junkrat said."

"Indeed," says Genji. "There will be more of them round here. Two squads at least, surely, perhaps even their main force."

"Is there a way around them?"

"Mmmm ... perhaps. There may be another route. There is also that way." Genji points to an awkward-looking climb along the top of the wall. "It would be difficult but not impossible. For us, at least."

"Let's take them out," you say, drawing your weapon and switching to sword form. "No sense in leaving them behind us to mess things up later."

"分かります," Genji says. The replicator in his right hand extrudes a trio of shurikens between his fingers, and he holds them ready to strike.

The two of you silently close the gap to the Talon squad. When you get in range, you dart forward and plunge your sword into one man's back, cutting off his sudden cry. Genji takes down one with a quick slash from his wakizashi and a second with a quick barrage of shurikens. The bodies slump to the ground. Genji wipes the blood from his short sword and sheathes it with a flourish.

Another team of Overwatch agents might've handled that pretty differently, you think as you and Genji quickly drag the bodies out of sight. You imagine trying to convince Reinhardt to perform a stealth kill, how he would shout about honor and insist on facing the enemy directly. You love everyone on the team, but working with just Genji, who has a similar skillset and lack of compunction towards striking from the shadows, has its advantages.

Genji's visor glows. "I sense two more squads. One there," he says, pointing down a hallway ahead of you. "The other there," he says, pointing to a similar hall opposite the first one.

"All right, let's handle them. You take the left, I'll go the right. Once we're done we should be clear to hit the sub-basement and locate the objective." Genji nods, and you separate, each quietly moving towards your targets.

You find the other Talon squad, another group of three soldiers, and stealthily take up a position in the shadows near them. With a snap of your wrist you change your weapon into gun form and hold your thumb down on the side button, building up an electric charge. At the right moment, you step out into the open. "Smile for the camera, guys," you say, snapping a photo with your helmet just as you unleash the thunderbolt from your gun, a bright arc of electricity that zaps through all three of them and leaves them smoking on the ground.

You poke your nose into some of the adjoining rooms and find that Talon has set up a security station for themselves down here. One guard is watching a series of monitors displaying drone cameras all throughout Junkertown. A quick slice and dice later, and he's out of the way, letting you have a look at the monitors yourself.

On one you can see Junkrat and Roadhog in their inconspicuous disguises as a scarecrow and shark-man respectively, accompanied by Tracer who's shrouded under a robe like the one Genji wore. They've entered the Junkertown fortress via the main gate and are heading deeper inside. Between them they're pushing a hovercart filled with a huge sum of cash, which explains how they got entry. Their part of the plan is going smoothly.

There aren't many camera drones in the lower levels. Maybe Talon is confident in their upper defenses, or maybe they don't want a record of what they're doing down there. Either way, they don't show you much useful about what's below you, so you ignore them. Until out of the corner of your eye, you notice something. A shape passing suddenly across one of the monitors. Did you even see that properly? You watch it closely but don't see nothing else. Maybe it was your imagination.

You meet up at the stairs with Genji and head down to the lower levels. The area is dingy and rusted, clearly little used until Talon arrived. The hum of generators is louder down here, the air more foul. You turn up your helmet's filtration settings. Thumping footsteps get closer, and the two of you duck into the shadows just before a larger, more heavily armed and armored Talon squad runs through and heads up the stairs. Sooner or later they'll find the bodies of their comrades and sound the alert, but until then you and Genji still have a short window. Should be long enough for Tracer and the Junkers to get into position as well.

Now all you have to do is find what you're looking for. Junkrat had no idea where anything was down here, so you're going to have to find it yourself. You and Genji split up to cover more ground, while staying close enough to support each other in case something happens, and you each begin to search through the under-levels of Junkertown.

Right away you see what you should be on the lookout for -- traps. Talon have this place wired up with all sorts of nasty lasers, tripwires and miniature explosives. You disarm one and hold it up, examining the canister. These things blow out flechettes, tiny metal slivers that can pierce armor. If it went off it would've shredded something sensitive for sure. Bound to be more nasty surprises around here. You make sure to watch your step.

The best way out probably depends on a few things, you think as you explore the area, finding a similar stairwell to the one you just descended. It probably won't be as easy getting out as it was getting in. The stairs are probably the fastest, but it would be nice to have a backup route. You find a disused elevator shaft that goes up to at least ground level. The doors up there are wedged shut, and prying them open while clinging to the wall would be difficult at best. But it's an option.

You thought at first from the decaying architecture that these levels were abandoned. But then you started finding bits and pieces that have been not only repaired, but upgraded. A rusted and ruined hallway will have new pipelines laid down. Electrical grids and heavy-duty cables have sprouted and overgrown overtop the existing architecture like ivy growing up a tree. Just what is this palce? What is it being used for? It's clearly more than a standard plumbing and power complex.

You explore some more, wondering just what it is that Talon wants down here. Junkrat was pretty vague on just what your target was anyway.

You think back to the conversation you had with Junkrat earlier. You'd just escaped from the dust storm, and after some fruitless arguing over the details of the plan, you pulled him aside to talk one-on-one.

"So look. This thing you're sending us to the basement to sabotage. Is this anything to do with the "treasure" I keep hearing about?"

"Not sure what you mean, mate," Junkrat said innocently.

"Don't play games. I've heard the story about how you're connected to some kind of incredible treasure buried in the Outback. Is it money? Technology? Or is this thing you want me to help you destroy?"

"The important thing is you get to the big machine and turn it off. All right? You don't need to know what it's for. Trust me on this one." He gave you one of the worst attempts at a trustworthy smile you've ever seen. "Now look here. I don't know about any treasure. But if I did know -- and I'm not saying I do -- I'd be willing to share the proceeds with a friend. The kind of friend that would stick up for you, get you out of a jam. A friend like that, I might be willing to give a twen -- err, ten percent share of the proceeds."

"I'm not doing this for money."

"Oh, I know. Just think of it as a bonus."

Tired of him giving you the run-around, you:

You pressed him for more information, but he wasn't giving up. "How do I know you won't spill the beans to your do-gooder compatriots over there? If the wrong person finds out about this -- look, we don't have time for chit-chat! Clock's ticking, let's move, move, move!" Maybe if you'd threatened him he would have told you more, but that wouldn't have done any good for your plans to try and get him on your side. In the end you accepted his vague description of a "big old machine" and agreed to his offer for ten percent of -- something.

Soon enough you'll get to see it for yourself.

You and Genji reconnect, not having found anything on this floor except a handful of Talon engineers who were quickly cut down. You head down another floor, clear it with silent coordination, and then another. The amount of refurbished machinery increases as you descend lower into the complex, and the hum in the air gets louder. You find a long narrow hallway with a high ceiling. At the other end, red light bleeds in from doorways on either side. You move to investigate.

"Does it seem strangely quiet to you?" you whisper to Genji.

"They have probably discovered the bodies of their comrades," Genji says quietly. "But they have not raised an alarm. Which means --"

"An ambush," you say as a heavily armored Talon soldier steps out from the hallway in front of you. An upgraded Lancer suit, glowing spear in his right hand. He lowers his left arm and a rectangular energy shield, much like Reinhardt's, snaps into existence in front of him. Loud footsteps from behind you tell you that a second one has blocked off your retreat.

Genji turns to face that one, readying his shurikens. "It appears we are trapped," he says mildly.

You say to Genji, "That armor looks pretty serious. We'll have to strike for the weak points." You point your humb at the lancer in front of you. "You take high, I'll take low?"

"Understood," Genji says. He raises his right hand, shurikens interlaced in his fingers, and with his left takes hold of his short sword. "I am prepared."

With a flick of your wrist you switch your weapon into sword form. "Let's do it, then."

Both of you run forward at the lancer blocking your path, you slightly ahead of Genji. The lancer readies himself to meet your charge, his spear crackling with electricity. With his superior reach he gets the first strike, a deadly thrust that would've skewered and electrocuted an ordinary man. Both you both dodge with reflexes born of long experience and cybernetic enhancement. You slide on the ground under the spearpoint to cut at the weak points in the lancer's knees as you skid past, while Genji leaps into the air and over the shield, striking backwards in midair to cut at the shoulder of his weapon arm. The lancer goes down to one knee and struggles to raise his spear, but before he can turn to defend himself you and Genji both drive your blades into his back.

The other lancer has pursued you from behind, but in his heavier armor he isn't as fast as you and lags a few seconds behind. You both withdraw your blades from the first lancer's body, and you shove it forward into the second lancer's path, causing him to flinch backward to avoid stumbling. Genji seizes the opportunity and, in an impressive display of cyber-assisted agility, climbs up the wall to launch himself off and land behind your foe. Flanking him on both sides, you go on the offensive, each of you striking rapidly, your blade clashing with the spear while Genji searches for a way past the shield. His short sword finds the lancer's armpit, causing a groan and a stumble, which you take advantage of by darting forward and driving your sword up through the vulnerable neck joint. You both pull your blades out and let him collapse to the ground, blood pooling beneath.

No time to rest. A third lancer appears behind you, backed by a squad of riflemen. Genji places himself between you and them. "Go on, Seeker. We are close to our goal, but we have little time remaining. I will hold them here."

"But what about --"

"I will be fine. I have faced much worse than this." You're not sure if he's telling the truth. You can't see his face because of the mask. With one hand he takes a light grip on the handle of his katana, the one he rarely draws. He turns slightly and, with his free hand, gives you a thumbs-up.

>All right. Just don't get in over your head.
>No way. We're both fighting. I'm not letting you have all the fun.
>Let's trade. You get the objective, I'll hold them off.

You're confident that Genji can hold his ground. You've seen him swing that sword around before, and it makes you feel sorry for the guys who are about to be on the receiving end of it. "All right, pal. Catch up to me when you can. I'd wish you good luck, but I think they're the ones who are going to need it." You give him a quick pat on the shoulder and then race off the other direction down the hallway. A rush of wind blows your jacket around you, and for a moment you look back to see a great flash of green energy as Genji unsheathes his blade. Then you round a corner, and the battle is gone from sight. You run, pursued by the echoes of gunfire and metal striking metal.

You follow the humming and red glowing lights, rising in intensity as you near the center of the facility. Your helmet warns you of high radioactivity detected nearby -- you're not in any danger, at least not yet, but it gets you wondering just what the hell is going on down here.

Emerging into a large cylindrical room you see a large glowing energy sphere in the center, surrounded by some kind of containment system. A single pure beam is transferred between the sphere and a hub of some kind in the center of the floor, which is connected to a series of data banks spaced around the outside of the circle. The sphere is changing in color, a gradual shading from red to violet and back again.

"What is this?" you wonder out loud.

"What's the matter?" asks a woman's voice. "Never seen a fusion core before?"

You turn to face the voice, drawing your weapon, but see nobody. You flick through filters on your helmet, overlaying various detection methods. Nothing.

"Looking for me?" she asks. A cloaking field shimmers, revealing a feminine silhouette in violet, and then dissipates to reveal the woman within.

"You?"

"That's right," she says, a tease in her voice. "Surprised? You really shouldn't be. It's been a while, mi amigo." She looks you up and down and a coy smile crosses her face. "Mmm, I like this vigilante look for you. What is it, "Seeker" now? I liked Bandit better, but maybe that's just me."

You fight back a chill as you watch Sombra take the one seat in the room, a technician's chair. She crosses her legs and leans her chin on her hand, looking at you with a smug smile. This is the hacker who keep dogging your steps. The one who's broken into Athena multiple times and makes Talon's security impossible to crack. Though she looks playful you feel an undercurrent of menace. Like a panther that hasn't yet decided to eat you.

You ask her, "What are you doing here, Sombra? What does Talon want?"

"Talon, well, they want what they always want. They say it's about power, wealth, control, but really it's about ego, you know? Feeling like they're the big dogs." With a gesture she creates a pink holographic keypad in thin air, taps a few keys. "As for me, I'm working. Same as you. Have a little professional courtesy, why don't you? Now let's see -- when was the last time we worked together? Tokyo, right?" She pauses to think for a moment. "Now how did that go again?"

You think back to that day, a couple years ago now, when you and Sombra hit up a corporate high-rise in Tokyo belonging to Lucheng. The two of you worked well together, finding an instinctive synergy. Sombra supported you from the shadows with hacking and stealth while you dealt with challenges more directly. The job went flawlessly. "It was great," you admit. "We were a good team. Went off without a hitch. Of course, the only reason I worked for you in the first place is because you blackmailed me."

"Oh, come on now," Sombra says. "I only wanted to reunite a family long separated. I'm sure mommy dearest would be delighted to know the mysterious figure stealing her company's secret projects was her very own son." She flashes you an innocent smile. "Just looking out for a friend. We are friends, aren't we, Logan? Oops, hold on." A light on her holographic keypad is blinking, and she taps it and a few others. The core above her settles into a steady violet glow. "That should do it."

"What are you doing here?" you ask her, looking up at the glowing sphere. She said it was called a fusion core. A memory stirs. The Omnic Crisis. Omniums, the Godmind factories turning out hundreds of combat drones a day. Powered by experimental generators. Fusion cores.

"You got it," Sombra says. She leans back and stretches indolently, then curls up in the chair. Your eyes wander to her shapely legs in her skintight pants before snapping back to her hands, watching for any sign of her drawing a weapon or activating her hacking tech. "It blew up years ago in the civil war, contaminating the outback. But it wasn't destroyed entirely. The Junkers found it. Some crazy fool rebuilt it. Now it's here. And it's ready."

"And Talon wants to turn it back on? You're crazy!"

"Relax," Sombra says with a dismissive wave. "The mind is long gone. Dust in the wind. But the generator still works, and the factories. We're just helping our good friends the Junkertown raiders get the critical supplies they'll need for our, ah, joint venture."

"What if you're wrong?"

"I've dug around in your friend Athena's brain enough times to know that I can handle a godmind if it comes to that." A sly grin crosses her face. "So? What now, chulo? It's just me and you for the moment. Got anything you want to say? Or shall we get to business?"

"What is Talon doing, Sombra? Robbing banks is one thing, but all this? The weapon thefts, the terrorist attacks, and now this. Teaming up with gangs like the Junkers and Deadlock, funneling them power and money. What's it all about?"

"Hmm." Sombra makes a show of pondering. "Allying with the world's major crime syndicates, bringing them all under one umbrella. You'd almost think they were trying to build an army."

"So what, some sort of grand crime alliance?"

"A little dramatic, but not wrong."

"How would that work, though? They don't have access to the same manpower or resources as governments or the corporations -- unless --"

"Unless they had advanced weapons that could even the playing field," Sombra finishes your sentence. "And had created enough chaos in the world to keep everyone distracted."

"To do what -- take over the world? What do you know about their plans? What do they need an army for?"

"Oh, I'm just a freelance worker, trying to make my way in this cruel world. They don't tell me these things. It's on a need to know basis." She winks. "You aren't too smart, are you, chulo? I can see why she likes you, though."

"Who?"

"Madre mia, you really are stupid. We'll talk about that another time, okay?"

You refocus on the situation in front of you. What's gotten Sombra mixed up in this? When you last worked together she was in the same line of work as you, a high-tech thief who specialized in information. How did she get from there to working with Talon? "There's got to be something in it for you. This world domination thing isn't your style. You're more subtle than that. Why are you working for them?"

"I have my reasons," she says. "Right now they're convenient for me. That's all."

"Really? So they don't boss you around?" If you remember right, the one thing she can't stand is the idea of being subservient to someone. You try provoking her a little. "If one of the Talon council was here right now and said "jump", you wouldn't say "how high"?"

"Listen, puta," Sombra says, rising from her chair. "I answer to no-one, all right? If they were here right now I'd tell them to -- oh. Hmph." She rolls her eyes. "Never mind. Their pet guard dog is here. I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings."

You feel a sudden chill. The room grows darker. You turn in the direction Sombra was looking when she stopped mid-sentence. A swirling dark cloud takes form, coalescing into a human figure. A man steps out from the shadows. A man in a black hooded coat, and a white mask.

"Change of plans," Reaper says. "Blow it."

"What?" Sombra asks.

"You heard me. Set it to overload."

"But --" Sombra looks puzzled. She pulls up onto her holographic screen a map of wind patterns over Australia. "That would cover half the continent in fallout. The half that's not already a wasteland. Not to mention destroying Junkertown, who, ah, we've just promised our alliance to."

"That's the point. Do I need to spell this out for you? Set a delay long enough for us to escape. Now hurry up."

Sombra glances in your direction. "What about him?"

"Oh, don't worry about him." Reaper cracks his knuckles. "I've been dying for a rematch. I'll keep him busy long enough for you to get out of here. If it comes down to it, I'll survive the explosion. He won't, even if he lives to see it." A sinister chuckle emanates from behind the mask. "How about it, kid? Ready for a second round?"

I don't think idealism will work on Sombra. Try to appeal to the consequences. The world will want her head for this.

Ideally, we keep them both talking and covertly call for backup. Maybe by transmitting what we're seeing and hearing to Tracer and Genji, try and attract their attention?
