You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Thanks to your timely removal of that large bandit camp, the next couple of days go by rather uneventfully. It was just traveling down the road and trying to find ways to occupy a bunch of bored children to keep them from burning down the whole forest.

Plus, your journey was just now starting to enter a new stage. You were beginning to run out of road to follow, having now reached the outer limits of any human explorers. You were in truly uncharted territory now, and were completely dependent on Janice and Artya to lead you the rest of the way. While you had no reason to distrust either of the demi-humans, it was still a concerning thought.

And then there was the matter of the Serpent Icon you had recovered from the bandit camp. According to Naru and Nino, it was a rather special, enchanted item that could increase the wearer's speed. You wonder who exactly could make the most use out of it...

You turn and tap Niko on the shoulder to get her attention.

"Yeah? What's up?" Niko asks, still in high spirits.

You pull the Serpent Icon out of your pack and hand it over to Niko.

"Whoa, really?" Niko's eyes widen and shine. "A Serpent Icon?! You don't find many of these around!"

"You're a Princess, aren't you?" Naru raises an eyebrow. "I would've thought a highbrow like you would be swimming in these things."

"Runaway princess!" Niko corrects her with a grin. "I didn't exactly have the opportunity to raid the royal armory or anything!"

"Hm, I guess that make sense." Naru shrugs.

"Anyways, thanks!" Niko giggles as she leans over and hugs you.

You suddenly get the ugly feeling to twin pairs of eyes glaring at you. Most assuredly Nino and Morgan. You somewhat cautiously return the hug, glad you're wearing heavy armor.

However, the caravan suddenly halts, nearly throwing you all from your seats. You turn to Nino, thinking that she had taken her attention off the road again.

"It wasn't meeeee!" Nino says defensively, pointing up front.

Sure enough, the rest of the caravan had come to a stop. Morgan's eyes and ears were immediately lit up. A sure sign of concern. You instruct the others to stay put while you dismount to investigate.

Coming up to the front of the caravan, you could see Janice, Artya, and Elias standing in the woods. All three of them staring at a tree. The clanking of your armor lets them know of your approach.

"Oh, Templar." Elias nods at you. "We seem to have a bit of an... issue."

"I don't get it." Janice frowns, still glaring at the tree. "I could've sworn we passed this tree before..."

You immediately look to Elias. Could magic be at play here? Elves were generally rather adept at making people lose their way through forests.

"I wouldn't deny that as a possibility." Elias nods as his skull face scans the area. "Unfortunately, I'm not quite as familiar with fae magic as I would like to be. I do recall Nino has some experience in dealing with it directly?"

That was true. You remember her easily defusing Semiramis' magic during the party at the Elven Quarter.

You nod and turn back to your wagon in the caravan, though Janice seems to be a bit ahead of you.

"Nino, sweetie! Can you come out here, please?" She calls out.

"I'm here!" Nino seems to just appear on the spot. You're not quite sure if she had mastered some form of teleportation, or if she was actually just that fast when she's excited. With Nino, either was a distinct possibility. "What do you need me for?"

"We think there may be some Fae magic at play to slow our progress." Elias explains. "Can you help us determine if that's the case?"

"Of course!" Nino puffs up with pride at the opportunity to show up the Archmagus. "Just stand back and watch!"

Nino kneels down next to the try and puts her hand lightly on the bark, closing her eyes in concentration. Slowly, the tree begins to glow blue as magic begins to flow through it.

"Hmmmmm." She mumbles. "Hmmmmmm."

Suddenly, the tree pulses green and Nino steps away.

"There's definitely some sort of spell put up in this area." Nino nods. "Looks like whatever it is, it's looping space around so we keep going in circles without knowing it. And the magic's definitely got traces of the same stuff I saw in other Elven spells..."

You nod. That confirms your suspicions. Using the forests as a weapon was a traditional tactic of the Elves to confuse and misdirect their enemies. Only powerful mages or individuals who great familiarity with the land could pick up that something was off.

"I mean, I can just dispel it right now, but that'll probably let whoever cast it know it's gone." Nino shrugs.

"Hmmm, I think I can lead us out now." Janice remarks as her eyes dart around the trees, her tail wagging. "Just gotta make sure not to trust my eyes, but my other senses are working just fine!"

Janice leads the caravan on, trusting her animal senses to get you all through this particular neck of the woods. However, as you progress, you note that the sky was starting to get progressively darker.

"Oh no." Nino frowns. "Looks like that spell also had something to mess with our sense of time, too!"

"We've basically lost the entire day." Morgan glowers as Sol begins to fall lower and lower.

"What's the problem?" Janice asks as she strides back. "We can get around in the dark just as well as the day!"

"W-well." Morgan stammers. "I-I guess I could, but regular humans can't."

"Plus the Elves tend to get more active at night." Niko cautions. "You know, being Luna worshipers and all."

"Ha, that's sounds kinda fun!" Janice smiles, which you found both pleasing and threatening at the same time. "These parts of the woods are part of our territory, you know!"

Now that you think about it, you were pretty close to the mountains now. Perhaps this area was the equivalent of the frontier for Janice's people.

"Perhaps we should keep moving, then." Elias suggest as he floats up to your wagon. "The Elves may still have scouts in the area that may come across us."

"But it's dangerous moving at night." Valentia points out. "Most of our expedition is at a disadvantage in the dark. Can we really put all of our faith in Morgan, Janice, and Artya alone?"

If the elves stumble upon our camp in the middle of the night, we'll be at a severe disadvantage and at risk of being picked off. We ought to scout and familiarize ourselves with a wide perimeter around our camp before settling in. That way we'll already have the foundations of a defense prepared.

You point towards the mountains. You should all continue until you reached them. Then you would be out of the forest and out of the Elves' preferred terrain.

"I suppose we can keep going for a little while longer." Elias nods. "This area does not look ideal for camping, anyways.

"And we at least still have a little of Sol's light to guide us." Valentia sighs. "All right, but I think all of us should be on alert."

You nod at Valentia's well put caution.

And just like that, the caravan continues, but this time, you, Morgan, Niko, Valentia, the Twins, and Janice and Artya were strung along the length of the caravan to watch for any potential attacks or ambushes.

You decide to fall in with Valentia. It was a bit nostalgic, honestly, teaming up with the young Paladin again.

"You know, you didn't have to come babysit me or anything." Valentia chuckles as you walk alongside her. "I like to think I've grown a bit since we last met."

You just shrug. It seemed the sensible thing to do, considering she lacked the enhances senses or speed the others had.

"Heh, I guess I should be flattered." Valentia grins. "So are things going well with you and Morgan?"

You give Valentia a cautious look.

"Come on, I may be a Paladin but that doesn't mean I'm dumb." Valentia rolls her eyes. "I've seen how she acts around you when you were being treated at the Monastery. "Plus my mother and father were just as lovey dovey, too."

You... you're not sure how to react to that.

"Heh, but I guess that reaction's all I needed." Valentia laughs. "But there's one thing so far that's been kinda bugging me."

You keep your gaze on Valentia, telling her to continue.

"The Elves put up such an elaborate spell to slow us down. But I kind of wonder. Was it a trap or a barrier?" Valentia wonders aloud. "I mean, if it was a trap, then we should be running into Elves ready for a fight."

Now that you think about it, that was true.

"But if it's a barrier..." Valentia looks to you. "That means they're trying to keep us from going further. Either they're ahead of us moving in the same direction, or there's something up there they really don't want us to find."

That gives you some pause. The only thing you know of that was of value up there was Janice's people, and the weirwood they had. Could the Elves possibly have an interest in one or both of them? That was certainly a troubling thought.

"I mean, that's just me speaking out loud, but I just thought you should know." Valentia says a bit sheepishly.

You reward Valentia with simple headpat.

"H-hey!" Valentia stammers.

Meanwhile, the caravan begins to pass by...

As you and Valentia walked alongside the carvan, you could see that you were moving into a break in the trees, giving way to a vast field of tall grass. In Sol's fading light, it gave the grass a nice, golden hue as it swayed in the wind, filling the air with rustling. You had to admit, it was quite the sight.

"Wait a minute..." Valentia pauses and narrows her eyes. "I think there's something-"

Suddenly, the grass begins to rustle rapidly and a massive, scaly appendage whips out and wraps against you and Valentia, both your armored bodies clanging together loudly. Your unknown attacker then pulls the both of you into the tall grass before either of you have the chance to signal for any help.

Whatever had grabbed you, it was pulling you farther and farther into the tall grass at alarming speed. If you didn't do something now, you doubted if anybody from the caravan could help you, even if they were aware of what had happened.

You manage to work your arm free and grab your halberd, stabbing the sharp point into the thick scaly appendage grabbing you. Valentia does the same with her sword. The appendage twitches rapidly, not expecting any retaliation and immediately unravels, dropping you and Valentia onto the ground.

However, whatever had attacked you, it was still out there. You could hear hissing and rustling as the creature continued to move through the tall grass in an apparent attempt to confuse you. And it was working, to an extent. Not only did this tall grass block your vision, but it had gotten much darker, hurting visibility even more.

"We need to get back to the caravan!" Valentia scowls, her shield up and sword drawn. Already she was starting to glow a soft golden light, a lone beacon in this every encroaching darkness.

You needed to retreat back to the caravan. Fortunately, you still had a vague idea of which direction you needed to travel. You tap Valentia on the shoulder and motion to her which direction to go.

"All right!" Valentia nods. "You go on ahead, I'll cover your back!"

You grab Valentia and push her towards the direction of the caravan. With that holy glow of hers, she'd have an easier time attracting the caravan's attention. Plus, you suspected that leaving her on the front line with that sort of illumination would draw enemy attention solely on her. You would prefer it this way.

"J-jeez, always want to do everything yourself, huh?" Valentia sighs as she starts cutting her way through the grass.

You meanwhile do your best to follow her while moving backwards, keeping your halberd at the ready. Meanwhile, you can still hear the tall grass rustling as whatever was out there continued to look for an opening to strike...

You catch movement to your side. A flash of scales, trying to move around to to attack Valentia while she has her back turned. Fortunately, you're quick enough to dash over and slam the heavy end of your halberd into the creature's side.

And the Arjatar shrieks as it lifts its massive head above the tall grass, using its newfound height to search for what attacked it.

You feel your heart race. An Arjatar was a close cousin of a dragon, except instead of being able to fly and breath fire, these creatures more resembled giant snakes which could vomit clouds of poison and had extremely venomous bites. You suppose you shouldn't be surprised to see such a fearsome creature this far from civilization, but this was no time to ogle. Already, you could see the giant snake's eyes tracking the golden light Valentia was emanating, obviously attracted to her glow.

This was not good. It was intending to ignore you to go after what was presumably a juicier target. Having Valentia dispel her protections should do the trick, but then there wouldn't be anything to signal the caravan to your location. Plus that would mean Valentia wouldn't have her blessings available if the Arjatar decided to attack her anyways.

Or, coldly enough, you could use Valentia as a way to distract the Arjatar while you could set up a killing blow on it...

You decide to wait for the Arjatar to give you an opening. Despite how it was making her more visible, Valentia was probably better off with her blessings still active.

You sprint forward to try to stay as close to Valentia as you could. This was going to require precise timing on your part.

As expected, the Arjatar rears up and then lunges at Valentia, its eyes gleaming in her holy light.

Yay Vally! So does that mean that the giant snake missed badly? lol.

The Arjatar is quick, but Valentia is quicker. The Paladin wasn't completely oblivious to the snake's attention on her, and the moment it commits to a strike, Valentia spins around, shield raised. Twin fangs clash against her shield, but she holds her ground, her shield sizzling from the venom oozing from the Arjatar's fangs.

This immobilizes the Arjatar for a critical second. You charge forward and stab your halberd's pear tip directly into its eye, popping it like a overripe fruit.

The Arjatar shrieks and writhes in pain, lashing its head and tail wildly. You and Valentia duck for cover to avoid the snake's flailing body. Meanwhile, you can hear distant shouting. The rest of your companions arriving, no doubt.

The Arjatar was aware of this as well, and still spitting venom and leaking blood, it attempts to slither away in the darkness.

You pull Valentia back up to her feet, tap her shoulder, and point to the fleeing snake.

"Heh, can never let a good quarry get away, huh?" Valentia grins. "All right, let's do this then."

You nod and both you and Valentia charge forward. The Arjatar still had yet to pick up any speed, leaving it vulnerable as it turned its back on you.

However, it seemed like the Arjatar's retreat was merely a feint, as it quickly whips back around for a second strike. Unfortunately, Valentia is quite quick enough to block the attack as one of the fangs manages to find the gap between her chest and shoulderplate and plunge into her flesh. To her credit, Valentia doesn't scream or cry in pain, instead stubbornly standing her ground and grabbing hold of the fang, preventing the Arjatar from rearing back up to flee or attempt a followup strike.

This gives you the time you need to leap in with the finishing blow halberd swinging down right on top of the Arjatar's skull with a sickening CRACK. You can feel the beast's skull shatter like glass under the impact and the giant snake falls, its body twitching wildly.

You quickly rush over to Valentia, who's managed to pull the fang out of her body and sits there, panting and sweating profusely. Her face was crimson red as if she was suffering form a serious fever. Blood, rendered black and necrotic from the Arjatar's venom, oozes from her shoulder wound.

"I was a bit too slow there." Valentia manages to wheeze.

Not a moment too soon, Morgan comes bursting through the tall grass, followed by a clearly out of breath Naru.

"Thank Sol!" Morgan's expression brightens when she sees you. "It's good to- oh no!"

Morgan gasps when she sees Valentia's state, but Naru is already on the case.

"Ugh, Arjatar venom, huh?" Naru frowns, digging into her pack and pulling out a vial of green liquid. "Here, this'll slow the venom until we can get you properly treated."

Valentia takes a swig of the potion and looks to nearly spit it out on reflex before forcing it down her throat.

"Sol! It's disgusting!" She protests.

"You're gonna keep drinking that if you don't want your organs melted into soup." Naru glowers and turns to you and Morgan. "Don't worry, she'll be fine. The venom hasn't had a chance to spread yet. She'll feel like crap for the next couple of days but she'll live."

"Wonderful." Valentia groans.

"Thank Sol..." Morgan finally breathes a sigh of relief and finally seems to notice the Arjatar corpse.

"An Arjatar..." Morgan blinks. "The two of you managed to kill it?"

You nod.

"Lots of valuable shit in there." Naru says as she oversees Valentia finishing off that apparently disgusting potion. "But I dunno if we got the time to stick around to properly loot it."

You point to the ground. It was already well into the night, and you might as well camp out here.

"Camp here?" Morgan looks around. "Well, the terrain isn't exactly ideal, but hopefully the smell of the Arjatar will keep any more animals away."

"And it's better we not move Valentia around till she's fully treated." Naru adds as she pokes at Valentia's wound with a cleaning cloth.

"Agh! That stiiiiiings!" Valentia whimpers.

"Hey, if it was a cut or broken bone, I could've fixed it quick and easy in seconds." Naru sighs. "But nooooooo, you had to get yourself injected with Grade S venom. That stuff isn't so simple to get rid of."

"I suppose that settles it." Morgan sighs as she makes a high pitched whistle.

In the distance, you can hear Romulus howl and soon enough, the rest of the caravan converges on your position.

"Oh my, this is quite the catch." Elias' eyes glow in the darkness as he gazes on the Arjatar corpse. We waves his hand and the body begins to glow a soft blue. "I minor temporal spell to keep it from decomposing. We can handle things in the morning."

And soon enough, a rough base camp is set up. Nino and the Twins work to clear out an open space in the tall grass through controlled burn, though it was mostly Nino doing the burning and the Twins doing the controlling. Elias meanwhile began circling the wagons in a defensive posture and setting up the tents, while Janice was busy cutting slabs of flesh from the slain Arjatar to cook dinner.
