Commander’s Office, XCOM HQ, North America

“What’s with the cold reception? I would’ve thought the possibility of a promotion would’ve garnered more of a reaction than that. ”

The Commander light teasing doesn’t get much of a reaction from either yourself or Loki as the words start to settle. Rook has been demoted and one of you leaving this room is going to be the new lead for Strike-1. The last 24 hours has been an wild ride of emotions and blacked out drunkenness after the completion of Operation Gangplank and remembering the fallen. Hell, this is up there up there. It’s probably not going to top waking up in the Commander’s bed but nothing will probably top… whatever happened there.

You look over to Loki, trying to gauge her reaction to the news. The Engineer is taking it as well as you would expect her to take it. She appears to be more prepared with this bombshell, or she’s really damn good at hiding it. For you? It’s hard to believe. All you can think of is your own failures during Vegas, the idea of being promoted Strike-1 Actual is so far out of your realm of thought it never crossed your mind.

You glance over to the sweater-less Bradford also in the room, he seems to be in a bit of disbelief at this. He takes a step forward.

“Commander, with all due respect. I can understand Specialist Loki here being a candidate for Strike-1’s new squad leader but I fail to see why Specialist Dozer would be considered.” Bradford speaks frankly, blunter than usual. A part of you can’t help but agree even if he is talking you down in front of you.

Because I said so.” Commander says sweetly without even missing a beat. You feel a shiver go down your spine.

“Yes, Commander.” That’s enough to make Bradford immediately back down, he probably still has further doubts in his mind. He doesn’t voice them.

“Now, this is how it is going to work. One of you will step up and volunteer yourself to lead and the other will become their 2IC. Simple.” The Commander smiles, leaning back on her seat and lacing her fingers together on the desk.. “If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to voice them.”

Loki remains quiet as she considers the situation. She may not have a few questions to ask but you have several, some more pressing than others.

“What’ll happen to Rook?” You ask. The idea of him not being Strike-1’s leader just doesn’t sit right with you. Sure, he may not have liked you much with how you act during battle but you did try your best to respect his command and orders.

“The simple answer is he’ll be demoted, but I can understand you want more than that.” The Commander says. “As you are both aware, even the soldiers of XCOM have cracked under the pressure. Moments of panic is unavoidable, given how this is not an easy war we are fighting. However, what Rook had done during the last mission was… different.”

You recall that look of shocking realization and the despair that had overwhelmed Rook the moment Babbler had died. It was one of the first things you heard once your ears had stopped ringing. It was bad but…

“His survival during XCOM’s first mission was integral. If he had died like the others in Delta Squad, the Council would have likely shut down XCOM entirely. But he didn’t, he had risen to the call and we’re here speaking to each other..” The Commander recollects.

You can hear Bradford gritting his teeth as the Commander speaks.

“Strike-1, as you know, is had never lost a man until recently… thanks to his leadership you had become my ‘A-Team’. If it wasn’t for the simple fact that XCOM needs everyone man and woman available right now I would’ve had put him in a non-combat role because of that.” The Commander sighs. “It’s disappointing really, I had so much more from him.”

“So Rook is to be a mere squad member now?” Loki says, speaking up.

“Yes. But, he won’t be participating combat for some time. He will be seen to by our psychiatric staff before being greenlit for combat again. I will not be having someone check out like that in combat again.” The Commander finishes.

You nod slowly at that. You can’t help but share some amount of sympathy for Rook. You could’ve almost had that yourself back in Vegas. But you didn’t. You can only imagine what he’s going through right now. You hadn’t seen the former squad leader since after disembarking from the Skyranger after all…

“Anyways, back to the subject at hand…” The Commander motions to the both of you.

“I will take the position if Dozer doesn’t want it.” Loki quietly speaks up. You turn to regard her, she gives you an apologetic look. “I don’t mean to put you on the spot but I can see the Commander’s reasoning for you.”

“Mm.” The Commander murmurs unreadable soft smile.

...What? You glance to both Loki AND the Commander. Was this…? You turn to Bradford to see if this was all part of some plan but he seems just as perplexed as you are. The Commander waits expectantly for your answer with the patience of a saint.

…It seems a very important decision rests on your shoulders. At the very least you have some time to consider, you guess.

I like situational and small command more than squad tactical command. We're also less likely to completely fuck that up.

Not to mention that we're building up some deep seated berserker like rage for the ayys. Going tard rage mode in the middle of a command would spell bad things.

Naw, we tried before and it turned out shitty since players were excited but didn't have the mindset needed for picking the right options. We're better as back-up in case the main leader is down again, or for second-in-command if they need to split the squad momentarily.

You wonder in the if the feeling of clear nervousness and concern you are feeling is normal. Did Captain Nguyen, your old squad leader, hesitate when he was promoted? Did Rook wonder if there was somebody better when he took the helm? When the Commander was given the task to lead the defense of Earth, did she wonder if she was the right person?

A myriad of other doubts swirl in your head like a churning whirlpool, trying to drag you down. But, despite all that you feel your body seem to act on its own. Like an out of body experience, you see yourself take a step forward and for a moment you feel a jerk of fear. The others in the room watch you closely.

And then something clicks.

A simple realization occurs to you, one that nearly makes you laugh. Before XCOM, the job you had was a dangerous one. Even before the aliens you were fighting a very different war. One that had broke many of your former team members because of how twisted the fighting was. Fighting through in some of the darkest places from some of the most ruthless criminals in the world. Did that stop you? Did that make you flinch?

No.

When the aliens came and killed so many of your old squad, when they had forced your own team to turn against you and Rachel, did you hesitate?

You didn’t.

You’ve stepped forward and faced every challenge head on. There was a thrill to it sure, and only now you’ve grown an even fonder desire to exterminate the alien threat. But the realization is simple, you’ve never backed down, why would you stop now?

You're ready for this, ready as you'll ever be.

“I’ll do it.” You say, sounding as convicted as you possible can. Your hair messy, you still have the remnants of your hangover, and pain in your chest, but god dammit you are answering this call.

“Good. Congratulations on your promotion, Strike-1 Actual.” The Commander smiles, very pleased by this outcome. Just like that, it’s done. For a second, your mind fancies the thought that perhaps the Commander had wanted this outcome.

“Thank you, Commander.” You say gratefully. You really hope you won’t let that smile down.

“I’m ready for your orders, Dozer.” Loki says, your second in command nodding to you and standing at attention. Seeing Loki respecting your newfound authority seems to make things all the more real.

Bradford quietly mulls this over but says nothing.

Best to start things off on the right foot, it’s time to get to work.

“I’m ready for your orders, Commander.” You state as respectable as you can. You’ll thank Loki later and Bradford… well, you can deal with that later as well. If ever.

“Eager I see.” The Commander chuckles. “There are a few things I have in mind. None of them are too pressing for you yet. The teams that had participated in Gangplank will be put in reserve for reorganization. That should allow you the opportunity to get accustomed to your new position.”

The Commander nods to Bradford who begins to walk over to a file cabinet to get something.

“What’s going to happen to Strike-4?” Loki asks, speaking of the team that had been Code Blacked.

“Those that didn’t participate in the operation are likely going to be shuffled around into other squads. We’ll be short handed for some time.” The Commander shakes her head. “Which means once you’ve all had enough time to recuperate from the fatigue be prepared for action. For you Dozer, I would suggest either informing your squad of the change of leadership, taking some time to study in the newly constructed Officer Training School, or help in cleaning up the barracks.”

“You didn’t seem to mind that much…” You say very carefully.

“Not particularly, last night was a very good morale boost.” The Commander agrees. You try not to think of that in any other way but about the party. “But, the sooner things are back the normal the better. Plus, Dr. Vahlen is going to be very upset about her missing animal test subject after the excitement of the recent alien capture wears off.”

“She has been eagerly looking forward to that…” Bradford mutters as he walks over and presents to you a very serious looking classified manila folder. It specifically reads that it’s for team leads only. “Read that as possible, you’ll need to be brought up to speed on things return that to me or the Commander as soon as you are finished. Your eyes only.”

You nod, noting Bradford stressing the last part. You take the folder and hold it at your side. You do note a curious glance from Loki’s part on the contents but she’ll likely keep her curiosity aside.

>You’ll let ‘your’ team know about your promotion first. The sooner the better.

“I think I’ll let the others know first.” You say.

“Sounds like a good idea.” The Commander agrees. “Unless there’s any other questions, you’re both dismissed. Congratulations again, Dozer.”

With that, both you and Loki salute and turn to take your leave. You catch out of the corner of your eye Bradford turning to likely speak frankly about your new promotion as you exit. Despite his clear doubts for your position you don’t really feel that much animosity to XCOM’s Central Officer. You keep the folder assigned to you close at hand, careful to not drop it.

“Central is probably just upset he’s missing his precious sweater.” Loki says slyly as you both begin to head back to the barracks. You chuckle at that.

“He did sound a lot grumpier.” You agree, rubbing your forehead. You're still hung over. “He practically sounds like a different person.”

You can only wonder where and more importantly how Bradford's sweater was removed from his person. That sweater is practically inseparable to the Central Officer.

“That he does.” Loki concurs, idly brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “It shouldn’t be that difficult to get everyone together, I know where some of the squad’s usually is.”

“Good.” You nod, the conversation trailing off as the both of you walk through the base. Loki seems rather fine with your decision all things considered, which you feel better about. Still, you’ve never really got to know much of the enigmatic British Engineer. Best to start now.

>Does she have any tips? Being 2IC for Strike-1 for some time now must mean she picked up a few things about the squad.

“Hey, are you really alright with this Loki?” You say, bringing up the topic sooner rather than later. “I’m not saying I’m not thankful for the opportunity, far from it, it’s just…”

“Mm.” Loki hums neutrally as you try to find the right words.

“...You seemed really quick on the draw.”

“As I said before, The Commander seemed to have already made the decision. I wouldn’t want to get in the way of that.” Loki reiterates before she turns to look at you with that sly smile of hers. “Besides, you seemed to have earned the Commander’s approval in more ways than one.”

“Woah woah woah! Hold on a second there!” You quickly hold your hands up at that, trying to think of a way to defend yourself. “I don’t-- It just-- it’s not what you think. We didn’t do anything, I’m pretty sure about it!”

“Not completely sure? My my… it must have been quite the night.”

“What!? No! Look I don’t remember what happened last night!” You hastily concede. “I blacked out and just… look we’re changing the topic here. I’m talking about you not me!”

Loki chuckles again, and shakes her head. She’s almost infuriating, but at the same time what more can you expect from her? She’s already spun this conversation around like a spider spinning a web. You grunt at that and expect to hear more expert ribbing but Loki relents and starts to slow down.

“I'm just preparing you for the worst, the others are going to be more demanding." She says with that slight smile of hers. "Think of it as practice to improve your case."

You sigh, that is true. It's going to be worst with the others and if you're going to be as tongue tied as that so easily you'll stand no chance.

"I'll give you that." You grumble.

"To answer your question... it just seemed like the right decision.” Loki says. She really does sound genuine at that, but still is as usual rather vague on the topic. She’s just as unreadable as before, but there’s definitely something more going on.

“You enjoy keeping your cards close to your chest don’t you?” You say shaking your head.

Loki doesn’t comment.

“Well, I’m not going to press, but I’d like to hear the full answer sometime.” You finish.

“Sometime. Sometime soon.” Loki says. You nearly miss it with how hard of a read Loki is but you do see a bit of legitimate gratitude at not being pressed on the topic. Loki continues to be a mystery, but at the very least it’s not that bad.

The both of you make your way back to the still fairly trashed barracks. Seeing the sight is enough to compound your headache as the finest of humanity has to offer against the aliens menace attempt to ride their own collective hangover. Having a better look of the place, it really was quite the crazy night. Some of the guys struggle to move some of the bunks back in place while others attempt to collect the collection of bottles from the likely depleted bar. Everyone is keeping a wide berth of the goat who has now staked a part of the barracks as its own territory.

“I’ll get the others.” Loki says.

You nod and idly pick up one of the rubber chickens, giving it a squeeze. It lets a pained soft cry. You shake your head and chuck in a box where several are being collected. Several chicken based squeaks and light screams are heard as the impact.

The squad is rounded up, sans Rook, Rachel, and Burnout. The others are what you’d expect. Hungover and curious about what happened with you and The Commander. It looks like the rumors from the other staff have already caught up to the barracks.

“You know, you really are suicidal, Dozer. You’re getting to be a lost cause to me at this rate.” Sweet says with a laugh. “An absolute madman.”

“Congratulations…” Harita murmurs, finding it difficult to look you in the eyes.

“Some of the other soldiers have been using your nickname… creatively.” Zhang calmly says. Sitting with perfect posture and without even a hint of a hangover.

“Ahaha yeah, what a crazy night, right? Ugh...” Naru says… somewhat suspiciously. She’s clearly the most hungover of the group.

“Shut it.” Peppermint immediately dismisses the chatter with a glare. “What do you want? I'm busy.”

“Dozer, if you would.” Loki walks over to stand beside you. That raises a few eyebrows.

“Huh, her too…? Damn dude.” Naru gapes. She doesn’t get to say anything else as she’s walloped by a rubber chicken. Her yelp of surprise is nearly as loud as the pained panicked cry of the chicken. "Ow! Screw you too bitch! Watch the eye!”

Loki remains at ease but with a slight look of satisfaction, looking like she didn’t throw the chicken at all. It was an accurate throw as Loki hit her clearly on the other side of the Rocketeer’s injury. Loki waits for you expectantly, wanting to dash that particular rumor rather quickly.

My bad for not making it that clear, Being Direct means straight up saying you're the new squad leader. Defending yourself is trying to get them to stop thinking Dozer is some Casanova after everything.

>>2394720
Zhang's a Gunner and Rook's an Infantry. Zhang chose to skip the Rookie phase as much like in the games you got him with a few extra ranks. It hasn't made him that popular among the troops for skipping the rookie phase!

Aren't our fatigues under our gear or is that the BDU? If it's the former it would be simple enough to get Dozer out of the armor and tuck him. If it's the latter...well we can use our imagination.

(Apologies for the delay but I now I can post! And that was in fact me posting earlier.)

“Alright everyone settle down, before we talk about last night I need to say thing important” You look among the group who do calm down sensing how serious you are. You take a breath. “Rook’s been... demoted and I’m the new squad leader now.”

The announcement hangs in the air. You resist the urge to frown, a part of you was expecting this they wouldn’t believe you. Hell you wouldn’t believe it yourself if it wasn’t given directly by the Command--

“Son of a bitch, he might be telling the truth.” Sweet speaks up.

“Eh? How can you be so sure?” Naru says suspiciously. “I mean it does sound pretty convincing but…”

“I believe it. He does not seem like the type of person to lie.” Zhang nods.

“You barely even know any of us, how would you know?” Naru raises an eyebrow at the new recruit.

Harita places a hand over her mouth at the revelation speechless while Peppermint tilts her head for a moment to gauge if your sincerity before nodding. It seems Peppermint is somewhat impressed by this.

“I’m not kidding here, I’m really... is anyone even listening to me?” You try and get their attention once again, but the rest of the squad is talking among themselves. You grit your teeth and get ready to try and yank them back to attention before Loki taps you on the shoulder.

“Allow me.” She says.

“Be my guest.” You answer, motioning to the squad.

Loki whistles sharply, reigning in the squad. You give her a nod of thanks.

“It’s the truth, you can bring it up with the Commander if you want and Loki here can confirm it.” You say again. “Let’s make this work alright?”

“Works for me.” Peppermint shrugs.

The others are in agreement, the leadership change is still a challenge to take in but there isn’t any objections. That’s good. That’s a difficult initial hurdle out of the way. Right, time to get down to the first order of business as squad leader, figuring out what the hell you did last night.

(Part 1 / 2)
>>
“So can anyone that didn't get blackout drunk explain what happened to me last night? One minute I was making toasts on a keg and next I was... waking up in the Commander's room.” You… reluctantly give that last bit, but you might as well be truthful with the squad.

“And before you say anything I was fully clothed and the room was pristine so I'm 100% sure nothing happened. I'm just missing the How and the Why. Throw me a bone here, it's been a terrifying morning.”

The squad looks at each other.

“You were quite loud last night and very distracting.” Peppermint grunts. “Several of the others were going on and on about how you were trying to be king of the mattress fight club or some such.”

“Fight club...?” You blink, looking over at the bunks being rearranged back to normal.

“Nah, from what I heard Dozer had teamed with Naru and some other guys snuck off somewhere, likely to do something very stupid.” Sweet says. Any doubts of its credibility is increased as Naru hastily speaks up.

“Bullshit! Why the hell would we do that!? I’m impaired!” Naru hastily says, attempting to use her injury in an attempt to cover up something. She’s not exactly sounding convincing.

“Sneaking off…?” You don’t like the sound of that.

“You are both wrong.” Zhang shakes his head. “Our new leader was busy last night for other reasons. I had overheard that he had approached many of the women in an attempt to… how do you say… ‘woo’ them?”

“What!?” That doesn’t sound like you at all! You look at the others of the squad, and the women within your squad give you neutral looks at that.

What the hell did you do last night? These are all a bit hard to stomach... do you even want to know more?

Ok, you might as well get everything and then figure out how the hell you’re going to fix the rest. As tempting it is to just wash your hands clean of this it’s probably best to know how deep in the shit you’re in so you can do damage control if need be.

“I need the details, all of them, one at at a time.” You say.

Peppermint groans at that.

“Well it’s a good thing I’m going to ask you first, Peppermint. Tell me about what happened with that fight club. Sweet and Naru, I want to know what happened next. And no, you’re not squirming your way out of this.” You narrow your eyes at the Rocketeer. Who was attempting to excuse herself out of the conversation as quietly as possible.

“Alright alright! I was-- just stretching that’s all!” Naru throws her hands up to do and sits back down.

“Mm.” Loki hums, unimpressed. Naru is apparently pretty bad at lying.

“After that… Zhang tell me what happened.” You almost don’t want to ask, but you did say you’re going to find out everything...

“Very well.” He agrees

“Oh, and one last thing. Loki, Sweet, Peppermint, if I ever get this blackout stupid drunk again, slap me.” You sigh, taking a seat preparing yourself for what’s probably going to give you an even worse headache than your hangover. Harita gives you a sympathetic look.

“This is fine with me.” Loki chuckles.

“You might need a bit more than just a slap to snap you out of it, just saying. Probably have to go through the works to sober you up.” Sweet crosses his arms sternly, partly acting as the bemused medic that he is.

“Can we move this along? I’m missing my morning workout.” Peppermint grunts.

“We’re all ears. We wouldn’t want to keep you dallying.” Loki motions for the Sniper. Peppermint rolls her eyes at that.

“...Very well. While I begrudgingly admit it was my idea to get you to drink. I did not expect you would go at it so… voraciously.” Peppermint frowns slightly at the attention she’s being given by the squad. “When things had become rowdy I attempted to get some rest but the ‘fight club’ had already formed. Sparring is acceptable sure, but I found the whole ordeal rather barbaric. From the cheers I heard and from what I overheard after… you were quite the popular contestant…”

As you listen, your mind begins to refill in the blanks…

Last night, XCOM Barracks, The ‘PILLOW’ Fight Club

There’s something mesmerizing hearing the cheer of the crowd. The bloodlust for victory and the cries of defeat. It’s an incredible thrill. Was this amazing sensation what the gladiators of ancient rome felt? Your envious and glad at the same time to experience this. This is the thrill of battle.

You pin your challenger on the mat, pulling his arm back in a lock as the crowd of soldiers and onlookers whoop and holler around you. Your opponent, a burly swedish Rocketeer from Strike-7 is completely at your mercy belting out curses in swedish. It’s like music to your ears.

You pull back harder, but not too hard to dislocate his arm, shutting the Rocketeer’s cries with a yelp. With his free hand he finally relents, slamming it repeatedly onto the mattress arena. Tapping out in defeat. You let go of the man and let out a shout of victory. The crowd goes wild and winnings and losses are traded among the totally not betting crowd.

“Lionheart is down! Dozer wins again!” The bubbly and attractive brunette medic from Strike-3 announces the call to crowd. She raises your hand up to your adoring fans before wandering over and rolling the wheezing loser out of the ring.

“Who's next!? The champion’s belt is mine and mine alone!” You challenge pointing to the trio of scrambling engineers trying to fasten some sort of wrestling champion’s belt out of the random crap in the barracks.

“We’re not done yet!” One of them shouts back, his face obscured by a welding mask. They’ve holed themselves up in a corner to do their important task, even managed to sneak in some tools from Engineer to make it perfect..

“...Well, when the belt’s done it’ll be mine! Beer me!” You shout. Someone tosses you another can, which you start to chug. The crowd cheers.

“I challenge you!” A familiar female voice calls out, the crowd hushes and parts ways for the new contestant.

You turn and face the new opponent. It’s Loco, the spanish infantry who helped you take the Battleship.. Her hips sway seductively as she slips into the ring, ducking through the octogan ring of bunk beds that make the ring. Several of the soldiers cheer, and a few of them wolf whistle (both male and female). She grins at you.

“Very well! I accept the challenge! Someone hold my beer!” You toss it back behind you and crack your knuckles.

“Alright!” The medic ref steps back into the ring. “Same rules as before! No hits below the belt and no groping. Save that shit for outside the ring. Everything else is free game! Ready… fight!”

The crowd cheers and you can definitely don’t hear the sounds of a new round of betting as you eye your opponent. Loco smiles at you, as the both of you walk in a circle, waiting to see who goes first. She beckons you over.

Well, if Loco wants you to go first, you’ll be more than happy to oblige. It’s pretty thoughtful for her to give you the first move and essentially let you win. Sure your vision and balance is just a tad wobbly but it’s clearly a self-imposed handicap to give the other opponents a chance and nothing else.

You’re totally not drunk, just a bit buzzed at worst.

You’ll have to thank Loco personally after the bout for letting you keep your sweet sweet prize. With a grin of your own you rush her. You belt out a battle cry as you close the distance as if you were running and gunning an alien. All that’s missing is your scatterlaser!

You close the gap and begin to grapple her, faster than she can react. Within moments you’ve slammed her onto the collection of mattresses with a loud thud with a textbook suplex. Cheers explode from the crowd as your martial prowess gets you the immediate upper hand.

Loco however isn’t going to concede as quickly as you hope as the both of you thrash about on the ground. While you are clearly dictating the fight from your position on top of her, every inch you gain on her is hard fought. It’s only a matter of time however until you simply tire her out.

“Nngh! A little rough, don’t you think?” Loco smiles at you through gritting teeth, loud enough for only you to hear.

“Well, isn’t… this what you asked for?” You reply grabbing one her arms for an arm lock. Slowly but surely you’re managing to pull it into position, despite her best efforts to resist.

“Nngh! It’d just be rather... anticlimatic if you just won! Where's the fun in that?” Loco grunts beads of sweat glistening on her forehead. “Let’s give them a proper show!”

“Well then, it looks like this might be a quick one!” The medic ref shouts over the rowdy crowd. “Looks like she’s about to tap out!”

The spanish woman’s fatigue from the battle earlier is quickly catching up. You manage to get Loco in the arm lock and you’re clearly about to win. However, you pause to take a look around and can see the crowd’s enthusiasm is dropping. They did expected a good fight, not a quick boring victory. You could give Loco another go and appease the crowd but you could be risking the title. And she DID ask for this…

“Never really pegged you as the type to care about what people think.” You say to her as you weigh the options in your head.

“I... was a dancer when I... was younger!” Loco barely manages to reply back. You find that hard to believe but you’ve heard worse while having a conversation with someone you’re attempting to pin.

You juggle the decision in your head for a few more seconds before letting out a grunt. The disinterest rising in the crowd is enough to force your hand. Curse her.

“... Oh fine. Let’s give them a show.” You say, and you purposefully loosen your grip. Just enough to let Loco elbow you in the chest and scramble out as you catch you breath. Ow. You rub your chest, you’ll probably need to ask that medic to look you over after this.

“Oho! Looks like Loco isn’t out of the fight yet!” The medic exclaims. The crowd perks up instantly, the enthusiasm shooting back up to a fever pitch. They’ll be getting their money’s worth, the money that is totally not being used for bets.

Loco rolls her shoulders and begins to jump slightly in place, adopting back a fighting stance with that mischievous and strange smile of hers. It almost makes her look a bit unhinged. You smirk back, cracking your neck and preparing for another go. A few moments pass before the both of you lunge for each other, clashing once again with the excitement of the crowd to spurn you both on. Win or lose, this’ll be one to remember.

They will be entertained.

The both of you collide with one another, attempting to get the upper hand. The initial clash lasts longer than you expected, as you attempting to get a good foothold and tilt the balance of power your way. This time around neither of you manage to get the advantage at first. It eventually turns into a literal tug of war, grappling one another in an attempt to bring the other to the ground. Loco holds her ground.. You are surprised, when did she suddenly have this burst of reserve energy? Was she just biding her time?

You grit your teeth and dig your feet into the mattress. She may have been holding back but you simply outclass her in the pure strength department. Time to end this. With a surge of strength you again manage to slam her onto the ground. While it’s quickly exhausted you in the effort, you have her now.

“No second chances for you this time.” You grin. “You’re not going anywhere.”

All you need to do is hold her long enough before she taps nice and--

She suddenly starts to look at you very very differently. A sultry and inviting look is written on her face that even causes you to pause. With how close you are to her and how your bodies are pressed against each other…

The shouts and cheers of the crowd are drowned out as, despite being pinned down Loco manages to lean forward, moving to the side of your head. You can feel her warm breath against your neck. Your hairs begin to stand as a shiver goes down your body. What the hell is she doing!?

And then she speaks. No. Whispers into your ear.

Ay Papi…!” She moans. She begins to gently nibble on your ear.

Your eyes bulge and you completely lose it for a second. The opportunistic Infantry has targeted you in a vital point for a critical hit. Your wits completely thrown out the window in that one moment as your legs buckle and your grip goes slack.

The simple opening is all she needs.

The next thing you know it, you’re the one pinned down as Loco easily capitalizes and swiftly overtakes you in one fell swoop. You’re simply too stunned to do anything as the medic counts you out. Just like that, your adoring loving fans have moved on and found a new champion to cheer for.

“Loco wins!” The medic hollers, shooting up the Infantry’s hand into the air.

All you can do is lay there on the mat staring up at the ceiling blankly, dumbly. Loco leans over to look down at you, winks seductively, and then goes back to soaking up the cheers from the crowd. You are unceremoniously rolled out of the ring like last weeks trash…

Loco would later win the belt, soundly defeating the other competitors before her.

You never did get a chance to get a look at the belt when it was finished...

“...And finally you had soundly lost to that Infantry. it was a complete upset.” Peppermint finishes, idly brushing aside a loose strand of blonde hair in front of her face. “Apparently.”

“Impressive, I wouldn’t have expected an Infantry to beat an Assault in close quarters.” Loki muses.

“I’m surprised you both didn’t get even more injured during that.” Harita shakes her head.

“Yeah…” You say, a bit horrified as you realized what had really happened once your memory started to come return from the retelling. The others don’t seem to realize and you are quite thankful. You kinda regret remembering that.

“So that is why she was wearing that strange belt all morning…” Zhang comments, scratching his chin thoughtfully. “Interesting.”

“That’s all I had heard.” Peppermint crosses her arms at you.

“Alright, thanks Peppermint, you’re dismissed.” You nod to her. The sniper wastes no time making herself scarce.

You shake your head, trying to come to terms with that. Sure you’re a competitive type as much as the next person, but turning into some wannabe gladiator was not what you expected from yourself. It’s… making you wary about finding out more about last night.

“Oh hey! Dozer looks like he’s had his fill of storytime. We should totally call it here, right guys?” Naru chimes in, seeing through your wariness.

“Really?” Sweet crosses his arms, a look of disapproval on his face.

“There’s always later! We should, like, help out with cleaning the barracks, right?” Naru hastily throws in, looking at you with a hint of desperation.

After hearing the first story… do you actually even want to know more now? Maybe it’s best to call it here, like Naru is suggesting. You can always get the details out from her privately at some other date. Then again… despite being rather embarrassed by that first recount, you still remain unfortunately curious for the rest of your blackout escapades.

“You’re going anywhere until you start talking.” You narrow your eyes, crossing your arms. You’re not stopping till you get the as full of a picture of your crazy night and if Naru has to get partly embarrassed as much as you’ve been you decide it’s a completely acceptable loss.

“Uhhh-” Naru, glances about before Loki firmly places her hand on the Rocketeer’s shoulder. She starts to squeeze. “Ow ow! Ok ok! Look, all I’m asking is for a bit of confidentiality here! T-this totally doesn’t have to leave Strike-1, right guys?”

“We’ll see about that once you start talking.” You say.

“This’ll be good.” Sweet smirks, kicking back for this.

“Well alright so… when I drink too much I kiiinda become a bit of a party girl.” Naru says, her eye darting about in paranoia. “I uh… I get a bit crazy and I may have this tiny problem of never backing down from a challenge no matter how stupid or suicidal. It’s kinda a small weakness of mine, I’ll admit!”

“It seems to be a problem from the sounds of it.” Zhang comments.

“Man screw you! In my defense Dozer has it also!” Naru explains pointing to you. “Er… no offense.”

“...Really?” You frown, already not liking where this is going.

“Yeah! We both kinda egged each other on all night to try and one up the other. In fact… it was your idea for what we did!” You’re about to say something until you realize that Naru is clearly telling the truth. Judging by how she’s been acting she wanted to dodge talking about what happened and had hoped you’d toss her a bone.

“What happened…?” Harita asks.

“W-Well…” Naru fidgets, preparing as best as she can for retelling the tale.

Last might, XCOM Barracks, The Bar

“Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!”

You and the others chant around a certain Rocketeer in a tight huddle. Before your very eyes, Naru completely downs the entire bottle of ‘Uncle Shen’s’ hot sauce.

The elderly Chief Engineer not only gives the troops fancy new toys but also on occasion can cook up a mean stir fry. He apparently learned to cook for his kid. This has of course won him even more popularity in the base. Shen had cautioned others that his custom made sauce is best enjoyed in small doses. While sweet and tangy it burns as hot as plasma.

Despite all of that you and the others can only look in utter disbelief as Naru KILLS the entire pilfered bottle without even faltering.

“Hyagh!” Naru slams the empty bottle onto the ground to triumphant fanfare. Her cheeks are a bright crimson red, her good eye is tearing up, and she looks like she's melting but the aura of victory around her shines brighter than the pain.

“Holy shit! The absolute madwoman actually did it!” Someone says.

Her satisfaction doesn't last forever however as the pain sets in.Your waste no time and attemp to help to your wavering squadmate. You move to the side and grab the coldest beer you can find out of the rapidly emptying fridge in the bar.

“Toss it!” She shouts at you holding her arms up, clearly overheating. She's a bit aways.

“But your ey-”

“Just do it!” Naru coughs and wheezes.

“If you say so…” You cautiously toss it to her.

“Shit! Fuck! Ass!” Naru swears wildly as she fumbles and bounces the beer in the air a few times before she manages to catch it, loss of depth perception be damned. Cracking open it open she downs the booze, cooling off thanks to the sweet alcoholic nectar within. More cheers are had from her catch.

“Aah!” Naru exhales in relief before grinning at you. She swaying a bit, drunk as hell. “Told you I'd do it Dozer!”

“Color me surprised Tanuki.” You say, nodding in approval as you take a swig of… you pause and look down at what your drinking. You have idea what it is. You shrug and keep drinking it.

“Don’t call me Tanuki, you fucker!” Naru fumes, glaring at you. The other guys scoot back at her fiery anger but you can't help but keep teasing her.

“What? I think Tanuki fits you perfectly. It’s a very cute nickname, it's perfect for you!” You chuckle.

“You motherfucker…!” Naru turns a shade redder at that, clearly pissed. “Alright its my turn to challenge you!”

“Bring it on.” You say, not backing down.

“Alright.. how about you fuck with some of the Interceptor pilot’s planes?” Naru challenges. There's a collection ‘oohs’ from the soldiers.

“Pfft! Too easy! I’ll do you one better!” You counter.

You're totally sober by the way.

Calling the vote here! Though, given how quickly the thread is dropping in the pages and not autobumping anymore, I might just wait until tomorrow to continue.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>2409977
I'm willing to wait for tomorrow
>>
>>2409977
Getting through the last 6 pages will take much longer than the first 4. I'd say you still have about 5 days.

Up to you.
>>
>>2410038
This.
And tell anons to sort by last reply instead of bump count.
>>
I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow to post partly so I can reuse images and not have to make duplicates and so that everyone is on the same page if I decide to keep riding out a thread until it archives!

New thread is up!
