You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Currently, you had stumbled onto a Vajra hive of all things, lurking under the Gateway colony. How they got there or how long they've been scuttling down there, nobody knew, but now was not the time to be asking questions. Dorothea was already arranging forces to have the Vajra quietly exterminated both to clear out their potential threat as well as open up the tunnels for the refugee population to offset the overcrowding issues Gateway was suffering.

However, it would take some time for the necessary forces to be recalled, so all you could right now was wait.

And to pass the time, you were helping Amy out with some physical training in the gym. However, it looked like she was in a boxing mood today...

"Nnnnnn, you seem awfully busy all of sudden, huh?" Amy grunts as she throws another punch at you.

"What makes you say that?" You reply as you casually raise the practice pad in front of you, Amy's gloved fist impacting harmlessly against it.

"Well, you're hanging out with Lara and the Admiral more. That's always a bad sign." Amy replies as she throws another punch. A nasty looking right hook.

As her fist hits the practice pad, you wonder how you should answer. Dorothea had instructed you to keep the existence of the Vajra secret. Then again, you didn't really like having to hide things from Amy and she clearly didn't enjoy that idea, either. Plus, you were pretty sure she could be trusted with sensitive info.

The only issue was how exactly she'd react to the news, though...

"It's something important." You assure her. "But you know how it works. It's a classified mission."

"The Admiral told you so, huh?" Amy sighs as she gives the pad one last, solid punch. Hard enough that it catches you off guard and forces you to take a step back. "Fine, I get it."

And with that, Amy strips her boxing gloves off, tosses them to the side, and picks up her towel and water bottle. With how sudden and deliberate her movements were, you could tell she was having another one of her little tantrums.

"We still have some time left-"

"Nah, I gotta go practice the routine. I've been putting it off." Amy cuts you off as she heads for the door.

Still troublesome. Then again, it wouldn't be Amy, otherwise.

You head over the sim chamber, since you had a feeling that Lara would be there "warming up." Indeed, you find one of the pods already occupied and walk up to see the screen.

Naturally, the ID tag identified Lara as the user, and listed the current scenario she was running. You quickly recognize it as the major battle between the Macross Frontier and Galaxy fleets, in which both sides fought over possession of the Vajra Queen. From what you heard it was an extremely intense mission.

Of course, in the scenario, the mission objective was to destroy the Battle Galaxy, break through the combined Galaxy/Vajra fleet, and take out the Queen. Judging from the leaderboards, nobody had yet managed to complete all the objectives, at least not by themselves.

Also on the screen was displaying Lara's HUD view. Of course, she was piloting a standard VF-25 dodging and weaving through walls of missile and laser fire. Looks like she had just started, as only now where the NUNS/Frontier forces finally clashing with the Vajra/Galaxy fleet.

All the while you eye the empty pod next to hers. All of the pods were networked together so they could join in on the same scenario...

You see Lara dive into the thickest concentration of Vajra soldiers, letting missiles and laser fire loose through the cloud. Vajra soldiers were taken out and blown apart by the dozens. In the distance, you could see the vast, humanoid forms of the Battle Frontier and the smaller Macross Quarter making a beeline straight for the Battle Galaxy. According to the scenario "rules", both of those ships had to be protected in order to guarantee the destruction of the Battle Galaxy.

You had heard rumors that it was possible to destroy the Battle Galaxy before either friendly ships could get into position, but you don't recall anybody actually pulling that off.

Lara apparently makes an effort to outpace the Battle Frontier and Macross Quarter to attempt such a thing, but she quickly gets bogged down by the relentless waves of Vajra, forcing her to engage them as they come. The fortunate side effect of this, though, was that she drew the Vajra's attention away from the friendly ships, allowing them to get the decisive killing blows on the Battle Galaxy. The screen briefly whites out as the massive enemy ship explodes, opening a hole in the enemy fleet.

It's at this point the Macross Quarter continues moving forward, dropping into the atmosphere to deal with the Vajra Queen. Like with the Battle Galaxy, there were rumors it was theoretically possible to move ahead of the Quarter and take out the Vajra Queen before the combined NUNS/SMS fleet could.

Unsurprisingly, Lara boosts ahead of the Quarter, but in doing so, moves past the relative safety of its mass and pinpoint barrier shield. In the midst of reentry, Lara couldn't use the high energy maneuvers she was used to, and takes an unfortunate anti-air laser beam to the face.

The screen then blacks out as the pod opens and Lara begins to climb her way out.

"Nice work, Lara." You grin.

"W-what?" Your wingmate pauses halfway out of the pod. "You were watching the whole thing, Cap?"

"Ever single detail." You nod. "Including your unfortunate demise. I'll be sure to notify your next of kin."

"Pfffft." Lara rolls her eyes. "So any word from the Admiral yet? Are we good to go?"

"You know..." You grin at Lara's exuberance. "You seem really excited about fighting Vajra."

"Hey, it's an enemy I never had a chance to see for myself, you know?" Lara gives a big, sloppy grin. "Only heard stories about them from the older guys, and they sound like a real change of pace from just beating up on Zentradi all the time, don't ya think?"

"I guess..." You shrug. You suppose you really shouldn't be surprised she wasn't put off by all the horror stories that were told about the Vajra, too.

"So yeah! Bugs! I just really wanna get in there and tussle with 'em!" Lara nods. "How about you?"

"Well, I suppose it's a fresh experience." You shrug. "But at the end of the day, it's just another enemy to take out."

"Well, that's how the job is, yeah?" Lara laughs as she slaps you on the back.

It's at that moment both your phones ring. You check your messages and see that Kellerman was summoning you to the hangar.

"Showtime!" Lara whoops as she dashes off ahead of you . "C'mon Cap, I'll race ya!"

"I seriously shouldn't be the one reminding you not to run in hallways..." You sigh as you do your best to keep up with your energetic wingmate.

The two of you quickly make your way down to the hangar, where you can see both Kellerman and Dorothea overseeing the assault force that was now gathering. You could see various Valkyries, destroids, and Zentradi battlesuits in the lineup. You see one of the battlesuits wave at you, doubtless Julie.

"Hey, you two finally made it." Kellerman grunts as he sees the two of you approach and points a thumb to the gathered destroids. "Apparently we had a bunch of these in storage. I figure they'd work better in a close combat situation than Valkyries, though you could stick with your regular birds, if you want."

"Nnnn, I'd rather just keep flying my Excalibur." Lara shrugs.

Your eyes wander over to the destroids, and you recognize the two models present as the Spartan and the Tomahawk.

The Spartan was a destroid specifically designed for up close battles. It had a small, highly mobile, yet heavily armored frame. It had various built in guns and a pair of missile pods for ranged attack, while its two arms were fully modeled hands, allowing it to carry a variety of melee weaponry.

The Tomahawk, on the other hand, was basically a massive walking weapons platform. It filled a middle ground between the nimble Valkyrie and the colossal Konig Monster, sporting numerous missiles pods, built in guns, and a pair of heavy arm mounted particle laser cannons.

From your experience, these destroids packed a lot of firepower and were more heavily armored than a standard Valkyrie. Of course, they had nowhere near the mobility a Valkyrie had, trading all of that for said protection.

Your eyes fall upon one of the Spartan destroids. Considering the conditions you were battling in, something a bit more specialized for close combat seemed to be the order of the day. Plus, unlike the big and lumbering Tomahawk, the Spartan was still surprisingly fast and nimble. You remember hearing about how Spartans were used to suppress rogue Zentradi back in the old days.

Plus, as with most destroids, the Spartan's control scheme was practically identical to that of a Valkyrie for ease of use.

"I think I'll take one of the Spartans." You tell Kellerman.

"Sure thing." Kellerman nods. "We've also got some weapon options stored over there."

You turn to see several sets of destroid-sized weapons, obviously for use for a Spartan or battroid Valkyrie.

You load up into the Spartan and quickly settle in to the cockpit, which was immediately familiar to you. It wasn't the first time you've had to scoot around in a destroid frame, and the controls were literally identical to that of a battroid Valkyrie. All you really had to do was input your personal settings and preferences to get the controls feeling just right.

"Hmmmm, didn't expect ya to take a groundpounder." Lara says with a hint of disappointment as her Valkyrie stomps forward in battroid mode.

"Seems like the better choice for this type of mission." You say casually as you have your Spartan pick up the most balanced set of weapons you could find. A high frequency sword and submachine gun. This would provide you with amble close combat and ranged options, in addition to the built in missile pods and coaxial gun systems already present on the detroid.

"All right, everybody, this is the plan!" Kellerman grunts, also piloting a Spartan of his own and wielding a shield and shock baton. "We'll be splitting into three primary teams for this! Alpha will head out first and hit the Vajra hive on the flanks to draw out their defenders and spread them out. Julie will be in charge of that effort."

"Looking forward to it!" Julie giggles.

"Bravo are the Tomahawks." Kellerman continues. "They'll be our battering ram to punch a hole in the Vajra lines. Charlie will be the primary assault force to take out the Queen. Any questions?"

"Yeah!" Lara speaks up. "Which team are we on?"

"Take your pick." Kellerman replies simply.

"We'll go with Charlie." You say.

"Then that means you're with me." Kellerman grunts. "Load up and get ready to launch. We're moving out now."

"Got it!" Lara says happily as her Valkyrie walks over to the open hangar bay doors and leaps out.

You do so as well, picking up your Spartan's weapon loadout and leaping out of the doors after Lara. Despite not having a dedicated flight mode, the Spartan was still equipped with jump jets for mobility, which was more than enough to control your landing on an asteroid's microgravity.

However, as you drift down to the asteroid surface, you immediately get a communication. A private one. Curious, you hit your comms and are almost caught off guard to see Dorothea on the other end.

"Harry." She says simply. "I see you're heading to take out the Queen."

"That's right." You nod. "Is something the matter?"

"Actually..." Dorothea sighs, suddenly looking tired. "I know I've issued orders for the Queen and all Vajra to be exterminated, but I must warn you that Karla and NUNS High Command may have... different priorities."

"They want the Queen alive." You frown, easily making that assumption.

"At the very least." Dorothea shakes her head.

"So you're asking me to go against what High Command wants?" You ask her carefully.

"Battles can be chaotic. Sometimes ideal mission results cannot be achieved." Dorothea replies vaguely without actually directly answering your question. "You understand that too, right?"

"If that's what you think is best." You nod. "But what about Kellerman?"

"You can trust him." Dorothea assures you. "He's been with me for a long time."

"If you say so." You reply simply as your Spartan finally touches down on the asteroid surface. Just a few hundred meters away was the mine entrance.

"Regardless, handle this quickly. I'm already getting all sorts of inquiries from Torman over all of the hardware we've been moving in." Dorothea sighs. "And, well... be careful down there, all right?"

You notice Dorothea turning her face away slightly from the screen. You guess she wasn't used to saying those sorts of things over comms.

"Will do." You say simply before cutting comms.

Soon enough, the rest off the attack force begins touching down on the asteroid surface and everybody begins to gather up at the mine entrance, focusing around the main elevator shaft.

"All right everybody, let's get moving!" Kellerman barks as his Spartan marches forward. "Alpha! Move out and start attacking through the side tunnels!"

"Roger roger!" Julie chimes as she and her fellow Zentradi split off into the numerous tunnel entrances. Soon enough, the sounds of gunfire and combat begin to echo throughout the mine.

"Bravo, Charlie, we're going through the front." Kellerman finally finishes, pointing to the elevator shaft.

"This is Bravo, we're going down to clear the way." Bravo Leader says simply as the big, lumbering Tomahawks take position att he edge of the elevator shaft. Then, in unison, the quartet of Tomhawks step off the edge and drop down into the depths below. The rest of you are quick to follow.

However, Bravo doesn't go down quietly. Already, you can see them firing their particle lasers and launching missiles into the black void below. Explosions ripple at the bottom of the shaft and you can hear Vajra shrieking in alarm and in pain.

The Tomahawks then touch down in the inferno, ignoring the flames and crushing Vajra corpses underfoot as they continue to firing their particle lasers indiscriminately. Vajra soldiers and even heavy soldiers disintegrate or pop like balloons under the withering assault from the destroids as the rest of the force touches down behind them.

"Daaaaaamn." Lara whistles.

"All units advance!" Kellerman barks as the Tomahawks slowly trudge forward, their weapons still firing continuously in the mass of Vajra up ahead.

The swarm was dispersing and dying at a rapid rate, as they had no way to dodge the particle lasers in these tight and straight tunnels. However, the going was slow, the Tomahawks never being too mobile in the first place. You were tempted to move on ahead, but what if you ran into more heavy Vajra soldiers?

"Hold!" Kellerman barks. "Let Bravo clear 'em out for us!"

With no other choice, the Vajra continue to charge at your position, getting close enough for the Tomahawks to start using their close in weapons. Autocannons, grenades launchers, and flamethrowers join the heavy particle lasers, filling the air with blue and orange light as Vajra soldiers die in droves charging in.

However, the larger heavy Vajra begin to lumber in in greater numbers, and begin responding with their own heavy particle beam fire, their large, lance like cannons crackling with orange lightning.

The heavy Vajra soldiers respond in kind to the Tomahawks' barrage, unleashing orange beams of crackling energy. Fortunately, the Tomahawks had heavy armor and pinpoint barriers for protection, absorbing the brunt of the Vajra counterattack, but not completely unscathed. One Tomahawk gets its arm sheared off and other has one of its missile pods detonate.

However, at this point, the Vajra were now focusing completely on the Tomahawks, apparently completely ignoring the other destroids and Valkyries in your force. Perhaps this was your best bet to slip past them.

Well, Bravo team could probably hold their own but you didn't feel completely comfortable at the thought of just leaving them like this...

"All units forward!" Kellerman barks. "We aren't going to get another opening!"

With that, Charlie's units all boost forward under the covering fire from Bravo. The heavy soldier Vajra are still to distracted by Bravo to pay any of the Charlie members any heed as both sides continue to trade laser fire.

However, you decide to hang back a bit to support Bravo a little. Picking off even a couple of heavy soldiers would take a lot of pressure off of them.

"Neuman! Get back into formation!" Kellerman yells.

"I'll catch up!" You try to assure him as you home in on the nearest heavy soldier, SMG blazing.

"I'll back him up!" Lara adds in as she boosts past you in GERWALK mode, beam spray gun spitting blue energy at another heavy soldier.

Your target begins to turn to face you as your smg bullets deflect harmlessly off of its thick carapace. However, that suits you just fine, as it exposes its face, the most vulnerable part of a Vajra heavy soldier. Your Spartan stomps forward at full speed, plunging your sword right through the heavy soldier's head. The entire creature then seizes up and twitches wildly, firing its beam cannon into the tunnel ceiling in its death throes.

Lara has a bit of trouble dealing with her target, getting knocked around with a sideswipe from one of the heavy soldier's legs.

"Damnit!" She curses as her Valkyrie is forced back. "Fine! Eat this!"

Lara then unleashes a volley of missiles, which quickly converge on the heavy soldier and blow it into chunks. An overwhelming, if slightly expensive, victory.

"Thanks for the help." Bravo leader says as the Tomahawks regroup. "Don't worry, we've got things handled here!"

"C'mon, Cap! We're missing out on the fun!" Lara quips as she boosts on ahead.

"Lara, wait-!" You sigh as you try to keep up in your slower Spartan, sprinting along as fast as you can.

However, as you pass, you could see signs of Charlie's push towards the Queen. More dead Vajra littered the floors and walls of the tunnels, but you could also see the occasional downed destroid or Valkyrie. This advance was not being done without casualties.

"Maaaaan, we missed so much already!" Lara groans.

"There's probably still plenty more Vajra for us." You sigh.

Suddenly, the entire tunnel shakes and rumbles, causing you and Lara to briefly pause.

"What was THAT?" Lara wonders.

"A weapon discharge, most likely." You say grimly.

Finally, the two of you follow the trail of destruction to the very end, where you see Kellerman, apparently the last operation unit, fighting against an absolutely massive Vajra that nearly filled the entire room. A superheavy soldier. The damn thing was more akin to small warship than a fighter!

"Neuman, Williams, get the Queen!" Kellerman barks as his Spartan sidesteps a downward slam from one of the superheavy soldier's legs. "I'll keep this bastard busy!"

Sure enough, behind the superheavy soldier, you could see the slumbering form of a large, serpentlike creature. Most definitely the Queen of this hive. It didn't appear to be active...

An officer's sword, anon, with a brass hilt. And custom wooden sheath instead of steel one, it's prettier and doesn't dull the blade.

Also, a naval model would probably be more appropriate.

"You heard him, Lara!" You yell, gripping your controls tight. "Head for the Queen!"

"Got it!" Lara

As the two of you advanced, you noted that is Queen looked nothing close to the size of the one in the Frontier simulation scenario. Either the mission designers vastly exaggerated its size, or maybe it wasn't full grown. Well, either way, you couldn't let it live.

However, your Spartan rumbles as the superheavy soldier roars, instinctively sensing danger to its Queen as it spins around to face you and Lara, its triple energy cannons charging as they track you. Kellerman tries to take advantage of the opening by firing all of his remaining missiles from his Spartan, but they hit the thickly armored back side of the superheavy soldier and barely seem to phase it at all.

Part of you screamed to make evasive maneuvers, while your other half urged you to take out the Queen. Without her, the entire Vajra hive would fall apart.

You don't hesitate and hit your jump jets, boosting towards the slumbering Queen at full speed. Your only hope to ending this was to slay it. Even as the superheavy soldier tried to track you, your sword hummed in your Spartan's hand as you started to close the distance...

The superheavy soldier fires its massive triple energy cannon. However, by this point, you're already on top of the Queen, and you quickly realize that you don't even need to land the killing blow and dodge to the side. Lara also boosts out of the way.

In its haste to fire, the superheavy soldier made a critical mistake, forgetting that its very own Queen was in its line of fire.

The Queen doesn't even know what hits it as the massive, battleship-grade laser cannon completely incinerates it.

And that's when all hell breaks loose.

There's a loud shrieking that reverberates through the mines as the remaining Vajra collectively reel from the shock of losing their Queen, and the only entity coordinating their hivemind. In one final act of brutal violence, the surviving Vajra turn one one another, tearing each other to pieces. Whether it was because they could no longer tell friend from foe, or if it was some sort of twisted suicide pact, you couldn't be sure. Even the superheavy soldier roars in grief and pain as it triggers some sort of biological self destruct sequence, exploding in cloud of flame and gore.

"Holy SHIT." Lara gasps. "So... that's what happens when you kill a Vajra Queen?"

"Apparently." You wince, your head still ringing and throbbing from the Vajras' collective shrieking. That was pretty damn loud.

"Good work, you two." Kellerman grunts as his Spartan limps over. "Looks like its mission accomplished. Better head back and get the word to the Admiral."

Well, Kellerman did speak sense, but there were a lot of downed destroids and Valkyries. Maybe you should stick around to help?

"Should we stay and help out with recovery?" You suggest. "We can always just radio word back if we have to."

"I guess so." Kellerman concedes. "Come on, then. We've got work to do."

And so you, Kellerman, and Lara comb the tunnels to recover any survivors from the downed friendly units. Thankfully, the casualties were relatively light overall, but the loss of all this equipment was certainly going to be felt.

However, it was long and grueling work, and the tunnels were long and winding, making it difficult to track rescue beacons so you had to comb every square inch. You and Lara continued deeper into the hive, carefully stepping through mounds of dead Vajra. Things were seeming to be a dead end on this path when Lara's Valkyrie pauses.

"Something the matter?" You ask.

"I thought I saw something shining..." Lara mumbles as her Valkyrie starts to wander off into a side chamber.

"Lara! Wait!" You cry as you run your Spartan in after her.

And that's when you slide to a stop, your eyes dazzled by the sight before you.

Here, in this one chamber, the walls and floors were lined with vibrant, purple crystals, glowing brightly in the darkness. Considering this was a Vajra hive, it didn't take a genius to figure out what this stuff was.

"Mother lode..." Lara mumbles.

Looks like you had just stumbled upon purple gold. A massive deposit of Fold Quartz, just sitting under Gateway for who know how long...
