From Nothing Quest

The year is 1338 and war ravages the country. Barbarians from the north come south claiming monsters force them from their grass sea. Nomads from the south go north in search of livable lands they claim the magical ley lines destroy their homelands. Beastmen from the east ride west on their monstrosities claiming even worse horrors murder them. Immigrants from the west travel east in hopes of finding opportunity as their lands are dry of resources. And the Empire in the middle of it all seethes with a hatred for all new comers.

You were born twice: First, when your parents sold you into slavery when you but a babe; And then once again when you decided to live for yourself. Servitude is all you've ever known. Your parents may have sold you; Or they may have been killed then kidnapped you just like many others here. How you got here matters not, at least not anymore. The rattling of the rusted cage you call home seems almost comforting, at least compared to the soft sobs and hard cries of the new thralls from the last raid. Howls of widows and children lament their fallen and fill your ears ruining your sleep. You look through the top of your prison to the white lights in the pitch black sky wondering when they too will give up. One of the new younger captives in your 'home' notices you and comments you and he are about the same age, nine.

“I'm Richter. What's yer name?” somehow he's smiling through broken and bloodied teeth “I can't tell cuz' of those rags you is wearin' but are you a boy or a girl?” he keeps talking as you keep staring at the sky with your knees touching your chin listening to your cage hit the sides of the carriage “Me mum says lads like me should get to know more kids my age” you look at Richter in the darkness, he's the only one awake. He seems eager for your answer. May as well answer him, not like I've got anything else to do.

>Tell Richter your name and gender. (Write in)

Hey, friends. I'm going to try something new today like hosting a quest! Yay! I've only participated in a few of these and I wanted to try my hand at writing one. First and foremost we're going to create a character in a dark fantasy type filled with your regular fantasy type races, elves, dorfs, orks, etc. One thing I want to try is have you guys basically do all the dice rolls. When we roll for options we'll be using the best of the first two rolls. I'll try to be creative with both dice rolls and writing. Updates will be random but will happen all day basically, until I say otherwise. Comments, criticism, bully, whatever, all welcome.

Struggling to remember since it's been so long since the last time anyone's called you anything but slave. It takes a second but it's there on the tip of your tongue, “Amon.” you look at Richter “My name is Amon.” you feel something you haven't felt in a long time- hope? “The others say I'm a boy or a young man. I'm not sure what the difference is.” the carriage rocks back and forth faster as it picks up speed “Where are you from, Richter?”
“Oh me? I'm frum Krundt.” Richter says proudly “Me mum says it's a small town but I never seen anything bigger.”
“I've seen a few places that are probably bigger than one hundred Krums. Maybe even one thousand.” You say with a smug look on your face. Don't get attached you know what happens when you get to know anyone. They leave or die. Emotion drains from your face and you put your face back into your knees. “Nuh way, Krundt, is the biggest there is! Yer fibbin'. Mum would wash yer tongue fer fibbin'.” after taking a second to think “Would be amazin' to see, though. One thousand Krundts. How many people d'you think that is?” you leave Richter to keep talking by himself as you try to fall asleep. Everything feels faster than normal tonight. Maybe your captors are trying to get to somewhere in a hurry? Hopefully they are. You grow tired of this mountainside on one side and deep forest on the other. You wish for new scenery when you wake up.

As you sleep you dream of what you want most in this world.

Dreams are usually the only means of escape and sanity in the hell that is your life, a dreamless night means a hopeless day. There's a certain static in the air that only you seem to be able feel. Everyone else seems oblivious to it. Only half of the thralls seem to be awake, the other half seem to be fast asleep. Richter is curled up into the fetal position on his side sleeping calmly. There are tear tracks on his cheeks. The mountain that had accompanied you for so long has been replaced with deep dark wood with trees that tower over you. At some parts you cannot even see the tops of the trees it's so dark. So dark the sun doesn't shine through. Even during the day your captors require the torches to see, at least you think it's day. That's what your body tells you.

A warcry of loud high pitched whistles the likes of which you've never heard before pierces and hurts your ears. Everyone including you is alert now watching for potential attackers. “There!” An older captive shouts out while he holds onto the rusted cage with one hand and points through the bars with the other “I see them!” you look towards where the man points and sure enough in between the trees you see flashes of men riding horses keeping pace with your carriage. Some of the thralls begin to cry and yell out as they begin to notice too. The carriage attempts to speed up but the roads betray it, it hits a particularly large bump and rolls onto it side and slides. The last images and sounds you see and hear before you black out is the thralls arm who was pointing earlier being ground up as he lets loose guttural screams.

You awake to find those unfortunate enough to be on the left side of the carriage at the time it went over have been injured the most as people have landed on them as well as being ground up by the momentum of the carriage still moving. The human pile you find yourself in smells rancid as if the thralls have let loose their bowels and the groans seem unbearable to listen to. You squirm and wiggle your way through pile of humans trying to do the same thing. You get punched and kicked more times than you can count as you make your way out of the mass of humans. As you reach freedom you notice your captors entire caravan has been assaulted by men in red and white. Many men are fighting along the caravan. The second thing you notice is your cage is sufficiently broken to where you think smaller thralls such as yourself can slip through, so you do. Standing up you feel someones face under your foot, you dare not look down to avoid horrors in your future dreams. You slither through the hole in the cage. Looking back into the cage you see Richter laying face down on top of the pile. You feel times merciless grip on your throat.

As you escape you hear the thralls scream at you to help them out as well, they don't know it was just dumb luck that let you breakout. The sounds of battle and slaves screaming from within their cages are far behind you as you gasp for air. Lungs burning and body failing you push forward deeper into the forest until it's completely silent. Even still your mind tells you to charge forward until your body gives up. Eventually you collapse on to the forest floor heaving. Is this freedom? Your heartbeat is the only thing you can hear. It seems you can't decide weather or not to laugh or cry at your situation. How will you survive out here? You recall an elder captive telling you something about mushrooms once when you were all told to pick flowers for an alchemist. I think it was 'All mushrooms are edible, but some only once.' He said with a smile. You assume that means don't eat any mushrooms. Ever.

You laugh so hard you feel as if you're going to throw up and in the next moment you're sobbing so hard your eyes might fall out as you writhe on the ground. All these new emotions you've never felt before coming out all at once. Years of torment and torture being set free. You're free. You are truly free. But the cost of freedom is self-reliance. You don't know anything about how to survive on your own and you're starting to feel quite hungry.

It's day you think to yourself as you lay on your back and look up toward the tops of the trees, a bit of sun comes through. A slight breeze brushes your body and moves the leaves around you. Some things you never noticed before, even when let out of the cage. Then you notice it. A small creature, a squirrel you think they're called. You know you can eat them because you've seen other slaves eat them if they caught one. But the question is, how did they catch one and how will you catch one.

To say the last year was easy would be a lie. Almost didn't make it through winter, too cold and not enough food. Fall was even tough, same problems as winter but less extreme. Oh and there was the time with the wolves in spring, you rub the scars on your chest and arm remembering it. But now it's summer again and life will be easier, at least you hope. You are now ten years of age. It's been quite the year for you. You're no longer a slave but a child of the wood. You call a hollowed out great tree your home. And you own this part of the forest with your vast array of traps and snares. Recalling memories of traps and tools your captors used to use on you, you now use to capture small and medium game. Also over time you've developed a way to test if a plant is poisonous. By breaking the plant in half and rubbing it on part of your leg or arm and waiting to see what happens. So far you've developed a paste that heals wounds quite quickly and a poison that saps energy and puts animals to sleep, especially effective when eaten. You ate a lot of it in winter. You also made something of an armory out of bone and wood. You've made many spears to varying degrees of usefulness, some bone tipped and some stone tipped. You tried to make a bow but there is never enough tension to make it fly far or fast enough to kill, it is quite fun to play with though. You've made armor of animal bone and clay which has proven effective when you were attacked by the wolves in spring. You now sleep in their hide and wear them. Your most treasured item of all though is a black glass dagger. It is about two of your hands in length and sharper than anything you've ever made, or probably ever will make. You fitted the black glass with a wolf jaw bone handle and then filed it down to your hand size for ease of use. You are Amon of the Wood.

One day while checking the snare line you see smoke to the north. It is a good distance off but still close enough you think you could reach it in about a days travel. The smoke also reminds you of the attack on your captors old caravan. You're kind of curious to see if it's still there. But at the same time your gut churns at the idea. Too many bad memories. Your stomach growls and you decide now is a good a time as ever to have a bite to eat.

Curiosity gets the best of you. You need to know what happened to the caravan. After all, it was your home. Even if it was a murderous, treacherous, insidious home. The smoke seems like a bad idea, at least for now.

Stocking up on supplies at your hallowed tree you decide to take pieces of bone to mark your back, should you get lost. You roll the big rock that acts like your door into the face of the hallowed tree and leave. It's kind of exciting to leave your part of the forest. You think of it as an adventure and pick up a stick and start hitting trees and bushes out of the way, in a way it's fun. Every so often you climb a tree and stab the trunk with your bone shard then hop down and keep walking. No bush or sapling tree is a match for your stick. “You'd best bow down or face the wrath of Amon, the killer!” You growl then laughter fills the air, it's been ages since you've spoken. Part of you thinks you'd forgotten how to do it.

Your wolf hide cape keeps you warm at night as you find a fallen tree to take shelter under. The bugs and small creatures seem to be taking shelter against the wind as well. They take turns crawling over you as you flick them off one by one. The next morning you continue in the same direction eating dried meat and drinking from your animal bladder. Same as yesterday, stabbing trunks with bone shards and moving on. Ultimately you feel as if you've never even seen this part of the forest, except in your dreams. That cold night one year ago still haunts you. The screams, the fighting, the blood. It all comes back. Suddenly this seems like a bad idea to go back. But you press on. You need to see what happened. Another night, another awful sleep filled with bugs and small creatures. You did see a green snake though, that was neat. You decide against eating it because snakes are your favorite animal and they never seem to bother you.

After your morning rituals you find it. Well, not the caravan but the road it was on. It seems much nicer than before. Last you were here it was made of dirt and mud. Now it's made of rocks perfectly aligned and smoothed down and in between is something holding it all together. You lay down on your belly to admire the road for quite a long time wondering how to replicate this when a wagon with two horses in front and a man sitting in the front seat and a child in the passenger seat somehow sneak up behind you.

“Hail, child. Where are your parents and why are laying down? Are you ill?”

No idea, possibly dead. I've been living out the woods for quite a while, after the caravan we were travelling with was attacked. I just came back to see what became of it, but they seem to be gone now. (Give him a half-truth, but don't let on that we're slaves, or parentless)

Giving the man a shrug “No idea. They're probably dead.” you say maybe a bit too casually then point at woods “I've been living there for quite some time.” the man furrows his brow in obvious dissaproval “The caravan I was with was attacked. I just came back here to see what's become of it.”
“But how have you lived out here? You're barely older than my young Callisandra here.” he leans forward to hear your answer. He seems quite intrigued by you. You shrug again. There's a moment of silence “Child, what is your name?”
“Amon.” the wind gives an audible sight while the man thinks “Amon, would you like to come to Obsguard with me and my daughter? Maybe we can even find your parents there. It's the nearest city to where we are.” You consider his proposal for a moment then wonder what his name is “What's your name?” you ask the man
“I'm Standish. Merchant dealing with various odds and ends.” You don't feel like he's lying to you but you're no good with humans. You haven't interacted with any at all within the past year. “Come see, Amon” he pulls the blanket from on top of his goods revealing a true mix of everything. There are some weapons, some toys, some vials and glasses filled with different colored liquid, plants and herbs that smell wonderful some are dried and some are fresh, and finally what get your attention is the sweetbread. You can smell it even over the horses smell. Your mouth begins to water. “Amon I'm not sure what lead you here but I'm sure I can help you. Please come with me.” as he offers you a piece of bread. Callisandra seems to not take her eyes off you and when Standish offers to help you she clearly protests, whispering into Standish's ear. “Oh hush now, Callisandra.” Standish says after Callisandra is done whispering.

...Hm. He seems like a decent sort, but it's hard to say for sure. I mean, I might just be paranoid in the extreme, but guys coaxing children into a carriage on the road with sweetbread seems kind of, er, spotty. You know what, whatever. Let's do it.
>>2403511
I support this otherwise, though our chances of him waiting for us to get our stuff seem kind of slim. Since we had to bed down for the night, I imagine it'd be at least a day trip there and back, probably longer, and I'd be surprised if he'd just be willing to idle on the road for us. If it's more then a days trip to the city by carriage and he plans to rest somewhere along the way, maybe tell him will meet him further up the road, once we go and get our stuff. If we double time it home and to wherever he stops, we can probably rest in the carriage when we catch up to them.

You think about your things for a second but then realize. It's all junk. All of it. Sticks, rocks, and bones of the dead. The only thing of worth was the knowledge you gained while making it. And the only thing you treasured is your black glass dagger that never leaves your side, and maybe your wolf hide cape which you also have on you.

You take Standish's offering and hop aboard his cart. “Thank you.” you say as genuine as you can, you seem to be having trouble speaking normally “Not a problem, lad.” Standish says with a smile on his face. In between bites of bread “I was studying the road. It wasn't here a year ago.” Standish listens intently while getting his horses moving “The path, it was mud and rock before.” Standish moves the reins to steer the horses from the side of the road. “Well. A year ago the Queen Reagent of Obsguard demanded that travel be easier to and from her city. To improve trade and such.” the wheels made a peculiar sound while on the smooth road, almost relaxing; You think back to the cage- oddly nostalgic. “So she had her personal guard take up arms against bandits, slavers, wayfarers and general riffraff along this road all the way to the city.” You continue to eat bread and listen “She's done a lot that's for sure. It used to be hell to get to Obsguard, it being surrounded by a swamp and all. She's also created a land bridge on all three sides of her city. Leading to the other great cities. There are also the walls. Oh and als-” Callisandra seems to be staring at you with daggers in her eyes “I don't understand why we must take this feral creature with us, father.” Callisandra says with venom cutting off Standish “He smells and he's covered in dirt. Why is it our responsibility to take him upon us?” Standish lets the air sit for a minute before replying “One day I hope you'll understand, Cali. You'll always know when to do the right thing, the hard part is doing it.” Callisandra leans against her chair and stares ahead. “I hope you don't mind, Amon, we've seen quite a bit on the road.” you nod in agreement “As have I.” the horses continue at a decent pace. After what seems like hours the trees you've known for the past year begin to thin out and you can finally see the sun. You look right at it and be blinded by it. You can't help but smile. The trees slowly turn to swamp, luckily there's bridges made of wood everywhere leading in all directions. Standish says it'll be at least a few more days to Obsguard.

Standish breaks the silence“Tell me, Amon, you say it's been a year you've lived out here? For what reason? And how have you survived?”

“Reasons? Bandits, riff-raffs... slavers” you say with bitterness “Most folk aren't very kind.” you look back to the wood as it slowly dissipates from view “I found what I needed in the forest and the rest I made with my hands.” recalling some of the things you made “I made snares, spears and armor” you say showing off your chest and arm pieces made of bone” you feel your cloak “Oh and I killed a few wolves too. Their fur kept me warm even on the coldest of nights.” Standish seems shocked but it's Callisandra who is first to speak “He lies through his crooked teeth. We take him in and he shows us dishonesty. Are we really supposed to believe you, a child no more than ten killed a pack of rabid wolves?”
“Well not a pack, one or two for sure. Maybe three. I ran before more came.” you say plainly. Callisandra lets out a guffaw. You take your armor off of your left arm throwing it to the side and you lift your sleeve revealing a mix of scars from cuts and a few obvious bite marks that are deeper than anything else on your arm. You remain silent as you show Callisandra. She wants to say something but her disgust at the way your arm looks stuns her. “Amon...” Standish says with grief and a slight crack in his voice “Are you alright?” the question takes you aback. Maybe this wasn't the best way to convince someone of your deeds. “No.” there's a lump in your throat. Why does he care so much? “I'm not alright.” you say taking off the rest of your armor and throwing it to the side of the cart. You retreat to the wrappings of your fur cape. “Amon you must be very strong and smart to survive out there.” you don't respond and choose to sleep instead.

It takes about four days to finally see the city. You pass the time listening to Standish talk to nobody in particular about his ideas and theories. You rarely speak and the same can be said for Callisandra. Finall you see it. Obsguard is a mountain surrounded by swamps on all sides with houses and buildings going all the way to the top with the most elegant and shiny at the tip. The mountain has a wall around it with houses on the outside. There are no trees for as far as the eye can see and you expect to spend the day on the road still judging by how long the road is. As you get closer you start to see other carriages, wagons and carts all waiting to get within the city each with their own passengers. You've never seen a beastman before, or Elf, Dwarf- Actually anything that isn't human you've never seen before. “Amon, I'm not a fan of lying but if the guard asks you tell him you're my son.” you nod. As you get closer and closer to the city you see the guards. They seem to be checking everyone and asking questions. Hours pass and the sun seems to set as you wait your turn to speak with the guards. You play with the bone shards you were stabbing into the trunks of trees. Anything to pass the time.

Finally it seems to be Standish's turn to speak with the guard. He pulls the cart up to four guards in black and brown. “Name?” the first guard in black and brown armor asks while holding a notepad and writing in it periodically, the other guards seem to walk around the cart inspecting it “Standish Everbright and these are my children, Callisandra and Amon.” he open palm introduces you both “Go on, say hello” Callisandra does a half bow in her seat lowering her head. You choose to do a limp wave. “Occupation?” the guard hardly seems phased by your courtesy. “Mage.” Standish says quite seriously. This seems to peek the guards attention “Wizzer, huh?” he puts his notepad down and raises his head as he waves the other guards over “What's your business in Obsguard?” the other guards casually stroll to the front of the cart. “I come to open a shop and sell my wares. I've got my permits here.” he opens his jacket and takes something from the inner breast pocket and hands it to the guard “Prove it.” the guard doesn't take the permits “Prove you're a wizzer and I'll let you through right now.” with a sigh Standish snaps his fingers and with a puff of flame a tiny woman dances across his now closed fist he opens and closes his fingers while the tiny woman effortlessly dances between his digits. The guards clearly impressed usher him through. Standish forces his permits and papers into the guards notepad and you all ride through the gate. “That was amazing” you say with wonder in your eyes. Standish grins something fierce “It's meant to impress children, not men full grown.” he lets loose a laugh.

Everything here seems so bright from the golden walls to the light brown roads. It's almost blinding. Obsgaurd is also way louder than you could have imagined. Everyone seems to be trying to talk over each other. Has the world always been this colourful? Or have I never seen it like this before? You enter the marketplace that's filled with every race that you seem to remember. Beastmen, Elves, Dwarves, and even some you've never seen or heard of before. All living here in harmony. At least on the surface. There are more people here than you've ever seen in your entire life. They fill each and every aisle to the brim. You eventually pull up to an empty shop a block away from the center of the marketplace to which Standish says “We're home.” Callisandra jumps off first and stretches. Standish starts tending to the horses. You feel as if your life could change at any moment again.

Life truly has changed. And for the better. You know how to appreciate the little things, a bed, food, a roof over your head. Meanwhile Cali seems to have a hard time adjusting to even the smallest change. Yesterday you let the window open to get some fresh air in your shared room Cali blew a gasket about how you ruined her life by doing this. Even after all this time she still hasn't warmed up to you. It's been two years since you met Standish and Callisandra on the road. You are now twelve.

You and Cali were enrolled into the same school, “Nixus', School of the Arcane”. At first you had a bit of trouble fitting in, other peoples problems just seemed so small and meaningless to you. The first year here you focused on your studies, after all you were five years behind. That and no one wanted to talk to you. Cali had spread rumors you were the devils child and that they found you in the woods. Only a half truth, you think. You learned how to perform basic cantrips, how to read, write, and brew basic potions. You truly enjoyed learning. Something bothered you though. Whatever you did Cali seemed to outperform you in every way. She's already casting spells and brewing potions spells past her level. Your teacher told Standish she might be the next Puck the Enlightened if she keeps this up. Standish could not be more proud of his Cali. A part of you wants this love and affection. You know he cares but you don't feel the same love that he shows Cali.

In the second year of you being here you started meeting new people. You made great friends with a group of boys your age who were from all walks of life. There was Victoss, he was from the near the top of the mountain. Born into a life of luxury his father sent him to the same school he attended. Then there was Cross who seemed much bigger than he should be at twelve years of age, nice guy but a bit slow. Then your best friend
who was an ex-slave, Trois. He was bought at the market by someone named Manchurian because he showed extreme promise in the arcane arts and so far it's been true. You think Trois and Cali are on the same level. Cali stopped spreading rumors and focused on her studies.

Standish has concentrated on maintaining his shop. You see new people every day coming and going to buy his potions or scrolls. He regularly holds events where he pays for certain herbs or ingredients. You always like those days because the wood folk always come in. They smell like your old home. Standish says the shop is prospering. You help out after school.

It's summer and life has never been better. Your only worries right now is the research paper you have to do on any topic of your choice. But you have all summer to do it.

I imagine we’d get it done, just not to as high a standard. That said, I’m somewhat torn. On the one hand, we could go brawn and try for a muscle wizard. On the other hand, I feel like we’d get a lot of use out of putting at least one point into finesse, just to round us out a bit on a basic level.

I find it hard to belive that wolf boy would spend his summer getting swole when he has freinds. Even if our mc was severely autistic I doubt anyone would dash on a chance at some normalcy after you just got fucking enslaved and pushed out into the middle of bumfuck nowhere having to worry about life and death every day. But writing papers is important for us soooooooo study sessions?

I think we're just metagaming cause we all know we are gonna get dragged into a fight by the QM eventually and even so we've kinda passed the point of trying to rp...remember how we casually said to Standish that the people on the caravan we were on got killed?

Ey, just because our kid wasn’t able to come up with an Oscar worthy performance and bring up tears for parents that never died, or for the slavers that actually got killed and also enslaved him when he was put on the spot doesn’t mean we were metagaming. Would have been meta gamier to give a great performance if anything, considering we have 0 finesse.

Splitting your time between all three things was actually quite easy. You thought you would need to focus on only one. Guess this is a lesson in how to use your time correctly. /qst/ just made too much sense. I'll do better next time, promise. In exchange for his help on how to brew basic healing potions Standish had asked you for help around the shop. This usually involved going across town and collecting things from various people and bringing them back and helping keep the shop clean. Nothing too interesting happened.

Standish said you were looking a little thing and suggested you start training. Running in the swamp would do you some good. Or maybe just climbing trees and looking for the perfect view. Taking this to heart you decided to try both. Running in the swamp proved extremely difficult and the leeches and bugs sucked. Still, you feel better for trying it. Climbing is what what you really liked. At first it was just climbing trees then it changed to why can't I climb that building? So you did. You spent nearly all summer climbing on top of buildings without the use of ladders or climbing tools. You felt stronger because of it.

Your school friends would meet up almost every day and hang out. You can never recall what you guys do all day but you're always laughing and having fun. From dusk until dawn you're together. Sometimes you practice magic together, teaching each other spells that you might not have known otherwise. You learn Weak Mage Hand from Trois.

You don't really focus on writing your paper but still somehow manage to be one of the top in the class. After all this is stuff you learned in the woods before. You make your healing paste from plants in the swamp and show how the healing properties increase natural healing by at least 30 fold. Your teacher seems especially impressed. You refined your healing paste.

Standish looks worried these days. Rumors of barbarians sacking the northern kingdoms and Nomads razing the southern kingdoms has forced the queen, Adela, to announce mandatory military service for any citizen that is able once they come of age, at sixteen. For any and all Mages, Witches, Wizards, Arcanists it's different as they are enlisted at the age of fifteen; If you are too old for service you will be a consultant training younger magic users for war time. Standish tells you and Cali this the day it happens at dinner with a grim face. “War is an awful thing.”

You feel the good times cannot last.

Our wit should suffice for now, and it's a bit late to build for charisma. Luck's tempting, but a bit iffy. I would still like to hang out with Calisandra though, even if we're not going to benefit from it statwise. I'd rather she not try and stab us in the back later when we don't need it.

You never know who you might be able to rely on when it comes down to it. So you train yourself. When you're not with friends or at school you're climbing, swimming, and running. You climb almost as fast as you can run. You take to water like a fish. And you're becoming quite dexterous when on land. Your body hurts most days but it's the good kind. The kind you can tell you're improving. You convince your friends to join you in your exercise but they only come a quarter of the time and see almost no benefit. You decide to take up training with a weapon, just as a last resort. [Dagger, Short Sword, Spear]

“Today we will be asking you a very serious question.” Your teacher, Ms. Clari, says in front of the class of sixteen “What kind of spell caster do you want to be?” she slow paces to and fro “There are two schools of thought on this process. Most of you have have heard of the Mage, most famous wizards and witches are in fact Mages by definition. Mages use words of power and chants to cast spells. Can anyone tell me of the other school of thought regarding casting spells?” Ms. Clari looks around the room for raised hands, she finds one in Callisandra “The other spell caster type is a Sorcerer, I think...” Callisandra mumbles at the end. “You're correct. Did the rest of you catch that? The other spell caster is a Sorcerer. Good job, Cali.” Callisandra has a look of relief on her face. Ms. Clari stops in the middle of the front of class “Sorcerers don't require words of power or chants to use magic. They 'feel' magic and use their emotions to cast spells. That is the biggest difference between the two. Can anyone tell me other differences?” You certainly couldn't up until now you've used words of power to cast spells, you had no clue there was another way to cast spells. Ms. Clari looks around “No one? Not one person? That's fine. Most sorcerers are great warriors and known more for their wartime efforts than for their advances in the arcane arts. Mages require time to cast their spells and they can also create magic. Sorceres on the other hand use magic instantly but cannot create magic. To reiterate, Mages slow but potent, Sorcerers quick and unstoppable.” Ms. Clari pulls a book out of her desk. “The time and training it takes to specialize in one school or the other will be far too long for you to specialize in both before your mandatory service in the army.” You think to what Standish might be he's definitely a Mage. He always uses words before casting spells. The only time he doesn't is when he's doing party tricks. [Follow in Standish's footsteps and become a Mage or, carve your own path and become a Sorcerer]

Today Standish has taken you and Callisandra out of school to teach you a simple but effective spell. He's instructed you and Cali to pick a few rocks from the ground. Next he says “Muru” and raises his hand open palm toward you, a light blue oval appears in front of him. “Throw the rocks at me now” Standish says with that familiar smile “Don't worry about hurting me. I doubt either of you could do any damage.”
“Is that a challenge, father?” Cali says with a grin “If you take it as one, sure.” Cali gives you a look then throws her rocks as hard as she can at Standish. They bounce off of the light blue oval in front of him. You try your hand at throwing the rocks to the same effect. “Give up? I thought you were going to try and hurt me” Standish says with a laugh. “Cali, go around his side I have an idea.” You and Cali work in sync, circling Standish on both sides. When he has his back towards you, you take the opportunity and throw a rock. It hits him square in the back. “All alright, all right. I've had enough.” Standish lowers his hand. “I'm actually surprised you found out one of the weakness' of this spell so quickly.” you and Cali both fall back in line “My father taught me this when I was about your age.” he messes up your hair with his hand “Great job on leading there, Amon.” His smile warms your very soul. “Maybe you aren't so useless after all, Amon.” for the first time ever Cali gives you a smile. You can't help but be happy. “Now let's see you two practice it.” Standish says while giving a clap of his hands. “Moo-rue!” Cali says with her hand imitating what she saw earlier, to which nothing happens “No, no, my sweet. Muru.” you try the same “Mue-rue!” copying Standish's gestures, nothing happens for you either. “You'll get there, I'm sure.” The sun is high in the sky and you couldn't be happier.

You spend the rest of the day having fun learning Muru, the barrier spell with Cali and Standish.

While an axe would be nice, hand axes aren't terribly effective, and I feel like a greataxe would make casting spells difficult. Sorcery seems like it'd be the more effective to use in the heat of combat, but I feel that in the long term we'd get more payoff being a Mage. Chanting would be annoying, but probably not impossible in combat, and going off of what Standish showed us not all spells require a particularly lengthy phrase or anything. Plus we may be able to perform magical rituals or enchant things as a Mage, but it seems unlikely as a Sorceror. Short term pain for long term gain.

You spend the next week deciding what school of casting to weighing the pros and cons of both. You decide to ask someone who has already made their choice. “How did you pick, Standish?” you ask during dinner with Cali and Standish “Well, in my time the creation of magic was quite useful. Like how I made dinner tonight. I had no fire so I used the 'Igni' spell to create the flame then to maintain it I used the 'Forevri' chant.” Standish takes a bite of ham and thinks for a second “But I don't have the impossible choice you kids have. Being a sorcerer in the battlefield would make you an unstoppable warrior. Allison the Great was a sorceress.”
“Well I've decided already. I'm going to be like you, father! I'm going to become a mage!” Cali says with a bit of pride in her voice Standish smiles “That's fantastic, Cali! I can teach you much.” dinner continues without much more talk of spells and magic, just the usual inquires of ones day.

“I will become a sorcerer!” You slam your hand down on Ms. Clari's desk “And I'm going to be the greatest one there ever was or will be!”
“Well I certainly admire your grit.” she says shocked at your outburst “I'll help you as much as I can to be the best you can be, Amon.” you take your seat beside Cali and begin studying right away. “What made you pick sorcery, Amon?” Cali nudges you in the side “Why not be like father?”
“One day I hope you'll understand, Cali. You'll always know when to do the right thing, the hard part is doing it” you say mockingly, just as Standish said to you all those years ago. Cali lets loose a chuckle “You're a dork” Cali says playfully then opens her book and begins reading.

During lunch you ask Trois, Victoss, and Cross what school of casting they chose. “I chose Sorcery” Trois says plainly “My father made me pick Mage” Victoss says throwing his hands in the air “I tried to reason with him that sorcery is much more useful. But he was having none of it.” Victoss shakes his head. “Well I picked the Sorcerers path, it seemed easier.” says Cross with a grin. “And we all know what you picked, Amon, you couldn't have been louder this morning.” Trois laughs, Victoss and Cross join a second later. You smile.

As a back up to sorcery you decide to pick a weapon that will help your strengths and make up for your weakness'. You tried many weapons but what felt best for you was the Pole Axe. You reasoned that the range and versatility will help you best in your travels to come. This is best.

As you get home from School after spending time in the market Cali is sitting at the table reading. She notices you enter “Someone was here looking for you. He was ragged and dirty. Like how you used to be.”
“Who was it?”
“Rikkus? Rikken? Richter? I cannot recall. He said meet him outside tonight.” Your heat skips a beat. What.

You decide to meet this 'Richter' in your courtyard but, not after taking some precautions. You debate on weather or not bring Cali into this but you need help and she's the only one around at the moment, elsewise you would ask Trois but you don't know where he lives.

“Cali, can I ask you a favor?”
“What is it, Amon?”
“This Richter fellow, I haven't seen him since the wood.”
Cali closes her book and looks at you “That long? Just who is he?”
“I guess we find out tonight.” as you prepare for tonight you bring out your obsidian dagger. Just in case. You also instruct Cali to hide around the corner.

As sun sets you wait in the courtyard to the shop. You pass the time practicing Mage Hand making it hold your obsidian dagger and swinging it around. It's well after sunset and you're not even sure Cali is around the corner anymore. You wait and wait until the moon rises and consider leaving, maybe it was a ruse after all? As you get up two figures come from the far side of the court, you were unaware there were even public entrances from over there. “Amun!” the first figure walks to you and into moonlight from the shadows, it looks almost exactly as you remember him except he looks more... ragged. Richter has scars underneath his left eye with burn marks on his neck. “You look different” you say with caution, you try not to offend but your tone may have given away your surprise. “You look a lil' different as well, fren'!” His teeth still shattered, you're now certain this is Richter. Curiosity gets the better of you “What happened to the caravan that night?”
“Well sum fellas' from the royal guard came and slew them slavers we were under. Couldn't you tell from the red and white they wore?”
“That makes sense.”
“Yea, when the slavers felt they were gunna lose to the Queens guard they turned to the slaves and started killin' the whole lot. Sum' sorta' hostage situation gone wrong. Was a huge slaughter. They almost got me 'cept an archer got my killer right in the eye with an arrer. And for the longest time I thought they got you too. See, there were all in all a hundred dead. Since we was slaves no one cared to count proper.” Richter doesn't seem phased by his talk of violence. “After the whole ordeal the Queens guard took the survivors back to Obsguard. They gave us a choice, serve in the military or live outside the walls. Everyone was a bit half n' half about it. I picked the guard at first but thems didn't think a kid could do much so they sent me outta the walls.” Richter shrugs “So what av' you been up to? I see yer' fairin' quite well. Saw you with Standish Everbright, you his kid or sumthin' now?”
“Just his assistant for now. I guess” you wonder what you really are to Standish, he clearly treats you and Cali differently but you always thought that was because she was a girl. “Ah just wanted to say hi to you, and ask for a favor.”
“What kind of favor?”

“My friend and I want to join up with the guard again, if they'll 'av us. But since we're urchins with no one tuh vouch for us. We cannot join. We was wunderin' if you could get Standish to put in a word for us?” You cannot help but feel like you're being used here but you don't know to what end. “I'll ask Standish but I can't make any promises.”
“Ah, that's fine. We weren't sure this would work anyways.” Richter looks at you with eyes glinting in the moonlight as if he wants to ask you more but, he doesn't. “Life is 'ard outside the wall. 'arder than you could imagine.”
“I lived outside the wall, in the wood for a year. After I escaped from the carvan that night. I lived alone in the dark wood.”
“Ah, so you know what Ahm talkin' about. It's only gotten worse. You know them beastmen are goin' feral outside the walls, right? They kill and eat us, the queen don't care because it's the outside people.”
“I had no idea it was like that.”
“Seems like no one knows. Or they know and don't care.” Richter looks towards to moon “Sorry for makin' you wait so long. The guard don't like us urchins inside the wall. Had to be careful, see?” you nod “A lil' tip, no one ever looks up.” Richter points toward the roofs “Just climb and you're basically invisible.” Richter turns back to you and smiles revealing his broken teeth once more. “Well, we should get goin'. Wait.” Richter smacks his head “I forgot to introduce you twos. This is my bess' fren', Jovick. We met outside the wall.” Jovick waves at you “He don't say much, he's more action 'n words.” Richter smiles and Jovick to which he smiles back. Jovick looks younger than you and Richter he's certainly shorter. He has short black hair with pale milk skin. He seems to have dark brown spots on his face. “We bess' be leavin' now, for serious this time.” You wave goodbye and watch them climb effortlessly and almost silently to the roof. Richter looks back and waves.

Cali walks quietly out of the shadows “You were a slave?” you're surprised she's even still here. “Yes. I was.” you say to Cali, she seems at a loss for words. “I heard it all. I'm sorry. For everything. I thought you were here to steal Standish from me. I saw it in a dream once when I was younger.” you nod, accepting her apology.

Laying in bed awhile you stare out your shared window at the moon. It's about three quarters full and quite bright. You can't see her but you can hear Callisandra sleeping. Too much is on your mind right now to sleep. Carefully you creep and tiptoe to Standish's room down the hall. He's sitting at his desk writing something. “Standish.” you say in the tone of mouse “Standish I have something to ask of you.” Standish turns in his chair towards you “What am I to you? You treat Cali differently than I. I always assumed it was because she was a girl an-” cutting yourself off as you realize you meant to ask something else but this word vomit came out instead. Standish seems surprised “Amon, I-”
“And it makes me feel wrong. It makes me feel like I don't belong.” Standish wraps both his arms around you, he's quicker than you could ever imagine. Or maybe you got caught up in some feelings and didn't notice him walk over. “Amon, it's true I've always given you a little more space. I never meant to make you feel like you didn't belong
“Then why do you love Cali more?”
“But I don't.” Standish strengthens his grip on you “That day we found you on the road is one of the best days of my life, Amon.” Standish's normally deep voice cracks a bit “That's the day I found my son.” he lessens his hug and takes a second to think “I meant to keep this a secret but now seems like a good time.” Standish walks to his desk and beckons you over. His desk is a mess with papers, ink, quill, and books stacked upon each other. In the middle something stands out, your name on a form of some sort. Standish picks up the form “Do you know what this is?” you shake your head “It's a legal adoption form. Do you know what adoption means?” you shake your head again “Well, it means you're so special to me that I want the world to know that you're my son. And when I send these papers back, the world will know you as Amon Everbright, son of Standish Everbright.” You try to talk but the words won't come out. “I love you, Amon. Please don't ever feel like you don't belong, again.” Standish says in his normal baritone voice. It's quite comforting to listen to.

The next day you remember you were supposed to ask Standish about Richter and Jovick. Shit.

[Part 1/2]

Just in case anyone was wondering right now Richter is the street urchin version of Amon if you guys chose to leave when arriving to Obsguard. If Amon became the street urchin you would have confronted Richter and Callisandra today. Oh and about the whole stat thing that one guy was talking about, we're not going to be doing that for much longer. I probably won't ever hand out stats like this ever again. We're going to have to level up and stuff through challenges and combat to get more stats.

“Standish, what is it really like outside the wall?” Standish raises an eye brow at your line of questioning “Lately it's been quite difficult, I imagine. But then again life outside the wall has never been easy. Why do you ask?”
“I- I have some friends living out there.” you say timidly “And they need help but I don't know what to do. They want to go into military service so they can live inside the wall.” Standish considers your words “And they need someone on the inside to say they're not murderers or thieves.”
“Yes, exactly. I was wondering if you could help.”
“Well, I can't go around being a reference for anyone that asks. Just who are these people to you, Amon?”
“They're both like me. They've lived outside the wall roughly as long as we've been in Obsguard.”
“And how exactly do you know them?”

“Standish there's something I should tell you. I was... I was a slave before you found me. I lived in the wood after I had escaped from my captors.” Standish keeps a straight face but you can tell he's hurt in a way only you could understand. Standish listens to you intently “I met Richter the night I escaped. He was a fresh thrall from the most recent raid. We spoke all day. I think they shattered his teeth for some reason.” you take a second to recall it all. “That night the caravan we were in was attacked by men in red and white and in the confusion I fled. There were so many dead” your voice trails off at the end as the images of the violence floods your mind. “I always had a hunch. But it's better having heard it from you. It could not be easy to tell me the truth.” you feel a weight lift off of your shoulders, you feel freedom anew. You continue “And Jovick is Richter's best friend. They say life out there is harder than it's ever been.”
“Well I'll tell you what I can do. I can get some work permits for them. They can work here for room and board. And if they're anything like you, who knows maybe our family will grow.” Standish beams “Bring them around and we'll tell them together.” you nod. An odd feeling of excited fills you.

You venture outside the wall to find Richter and Jovick. Of course you take your obsidian dagger and tie it behind your back in it's newly made bone sheath. It sits comfortably on your waist line. You ask everyone you see in the slums about both of your friends. Everyone says the exact same thing “No idea who those two are.” word for word. However, gossip seems to travel fast and within the hour they find you instead. “Amon!” Richter waves as does Jovick “You stick out like a sore thumb here” Jovick giggles a bit “What can I do for you, fren'?”
“I have great news.” you pull out some papers to show them “These papers say you can live with me, Standish and my sister Callisandra! You and Jovick! Standish got the permits for it!” Richter smiles revealing half his broken teeth “Yer' not lyin', right?”
“It's the truth. I swear it.” you say
“Thank you” a meek voice you've never heard before says from behind Richter. You and Richter seem surprised to hear “Jo' was that you?” Richter turns to face Jovick. All three of you howl with laughter as you walk back into the city.

Your circle grows as the sun sets.

At school Ms. Clari teaches you how to channel magic through your body. “Feel that? The static in the air. It doesn't want to harm or help you. It's just there. If you close your eyes you may be able to feel it a bit better.” You close your eyes and open your mind. Ms. Clari is right, it feels like a cool breeze during summer day, it feels like a hot chocolate during winter. “That's right, you've got it.” Ms. Clari encourages you. You push these feelings in a shape in your mind. A blue oval. Muru. You open your eyes and think once more of Muru as you point your palm forward. You feel the energy rush down your arm and into your hand then Muru appears in front of you. “Yes!” Ms. Clari grins at you. “Over time it should be close to instant.” Ms Clari thinks for a moment “The school was built upon a leyline. Feel free to practice all you want here. Typically sorcerers and mages work in tandem The mage creates the magic while the sorcerer uses it. Usually there's a third in the team, typically a none magic user to create a cell.” Ms. Clari says while turning to everyone so they can hear “Now. Everyone to their seats. We have another important lesson today.” everyone breaks the circle around you and Ms. Clari. “We need to discuss what kind of spells we hope to learn before your service.” Ms Clari continues “I will be personally teaching you some of these. But, there are fourteen of you and only one of me so I only have so much time to spend with each of you. Open your books and find some spells you would like to learn.”

You feel as if your life is about to change once more.

[Pick 3]
>Magic Darts: Throw 3 magical darts above you to sit the air until you're ready to shoot them. Deals 1d3 per dart.
>Imbue Fire: Imbue your weapon with flames that do not hurt you. Your weapon deals an additional +2 flame damage per hit. Attacking your target with imbued weapon may cause them to be set on fire, for 1d4 per every action they take. Requires a flame to be nearby.
>Frozen Dagger: With a swipe of your hand you create a shard of ice that you throw at a target. It deals 1d6 if it hits. Then no matter what explodes for an additional 1d4 of damage to all targets around the dagger.
>Force push: Push targets up to twenty feet away from you. Depending on the angle of you and your target it could go farther. (Ex: if you are below your target will go higher into the air) deals 1d6 damage plus an additional 1d6 if they hit an object.
>Mend: Channel your energy to force wounds to heal faster. Heal for 1d4 per turn spent channeling spell. Spell cancels if you are interrupted or perform another action.
>Forgo learning one spell to practice the other two you've chosen. [+1 Wit permanently.][+1 rank in other two spells]

Glad that worked out for us. As far as spells go, hm. We should probably pick things that will scale well, as we build up experience. There will probably be an upgraded magic darts down the line, so maybe avoid that. Same with the fire sword, enchanted equipment will probably be more then enough to compensate without burning a spell slot for it. Frozen dagger is just a subpar ranged spell.
>Force push: Push targets up to twenty feet away from you. Depending on the angle of you and your target it could go farther. (Ex: if you are below your target will go higher into the air) deals 1d6 damage plus an additional 1d6 if they hit an object.
I can see having a wide range of applications, and
>Mend: Channel your energy to force wounds to heal faster. Heal for 1d4 per turn spent channeling spell. Spell cancels if you are interrupted or perform another action
Sounds like it will scale well, since we won’t really be healing in the midst of combat anyways. I’m kind of tempted to take
>Forgo learning one spell to practice the other two you've chosen. [+1 Wit permanently.][+1 rank in other two spells]

Rolled 6 (1d6)

You can't believe fast time passes when you're busy. Between trying to learn at school, training spells, working at the shop and spending time with friends and family. It's been a year and some change. You are now thirteen. Ms. Clari has taught you several spells which you have learned the first rank of, Illusion, Force Push and Mend. She mentions to you that there are other ways to learn spells, from classmates, books, other teachers, and sometimes you'll plain think of your own. The world is yours. Richter and Jovick work at Standish's shop alongside you and Callisandra, it feels nice to have a day off once in awhile. The old shop was a bit cramped so Standish decided to move you all into a bigger place. The shop remained the same size basically but there was far more space above the shop for all of you. Standish also started to sell the blacksmiths items, for a small fee of course. It's even in a more standard location near the middle of the market. Standish says the market is flourishing in the more central area.

The rumor is the northern kingdoms have had to make several peace treaties with the barbarian hordes to keep them at bay. Treaties however, are broken and rewritten so often, sometimes in the same day, no one can keep track. The war in the north seems to be a losing one. Nomads from the south claim magical leylines are appearing out of nowhere and destroying everything, on top of that the leylines also attract monsters of all variety that feed off of magical energy. Beastmen from the east go feral and attack eveyone and anyone. Whole villages and soometimes cities vanish without a trace. Immigrants try to find a new life deeper into the empires lands, the lands they come from are barren of resources. They take from the land but the land does not grow back. And the Empire in which you are a part of is in the middle struggling to hold back all forces, be it nature or man.

The year is 1338 and things are going to get a lot harder for you.

Callisandra finds you at school and challenges you to a duel. Seems you borrowed one her items without telling her. You're not particularly sure you've done any wrong, the house seems so busy lately that you can't be sure anyone has done any wrong. Callisandra seems convinced it's you though. She finds you during lunch and uses Force Push from behind, knocking you to the ground. You slide along the ground on your hands and knees, scraping and scratching them. (You take my roll in damage)

With a quick thinking you channel Muru through your left arm protecting your body and angling it upwards. The dagger flies through the air simply bouncing off your angled shield and into the air. It explodes half a second after it bounces off your shield, shrapnel bouncing off of your shield as well. The gaggle of students watching cheer as the dagger detonates. Your blood is racing now. “Me? A thought crosses your mind. If you just walk to Cali she's just going to force push you back again. Or throw a dagger at your feet and watch it explode. No, that won't do. You need a distraction. You've got the perfect one. “Seems your throwing arm isn't as sharp as your tongue.” you say mockingly, the jab clearly hits home as your Cali's face contorts to a sneer. While you have her attention you use Illusion to summon a skull. A skull on fire. Yea, that'll do. You conjure the image behind her. You point “What's that!”
“Oh if you think I'm falling for-” the skull howls catching her completely off guard. She takes a step back from the skull projecting Muru in the skulls direction. You run foll boar towards her. You get within 5 feet of her before she turns back to you but, it's too late you've already cast force push. [roll 1d20+WIT(5), roll higher than 8.]

You feel the energy flow your arms into your hands with a great release you blow Cali back into a nearby wall. Clearly winded she begins to cough “I- I yield!”. The entire class has gathered now and they cheer. Clearly the underdog has won. You see coin exchange hands between your fellow students along with comments of 'He cheated' or 'That wasn't fair'. You walk to Cali and help her up. “Seems the best sorcerer won.” you say with a smirk “You got lucky.” she says between coughs and gasps. She places her hands on her back and starts chanting. Green energy flows freely through her hands and into her back “That really hurt, you know.” you can feel the immense power from here, you get a feeling she was playing around too. “I can't believe you hit a girl.” she says with a grin. She looks like shes back to full strength. You decide to keep your scratches and scrapes for pity points with Standish later. “And I can't believe you hit a cripple” you hobble towards to doorway heading back into school. Everyone laughs at your escapades. You both forget what the fight was even about.

Ms. Cali watched the whole thing from the inside of the class through a window facing the courtyard. “Quite a creative use of what I've taught you. Keep it up and you'll be untouchable.” compliments from your teacher make you stand up straight “However, don't ever fight in my courtyard again or I'll have to intervene.” she taps you lightly on the head with her staff.

At home later in the same day you tell Richter and Jovick what happened. They're clearly impressed but Richter says she was 'fakin' the whole time. She 'ad you dead to rights.' You think he might be right. Was she testing you? Who knows. Who cares. You won and that's that. Everyone cleans the shop while Standish talks to a customer you've never seen before. But you know the archetype. Adventurers they like to call themselves. They raid crypts and tombs for treasures, they hunt monsters for coin and then sell the monster parts to Mages and Alchemists alike. They seem to show up more and more lately. Standish hands him some coin in exchange for a dripping wet sack, your stomach churns at the thought of the contents. The adventurer leaves and gives you a wink. You smile back and wonder why these guys have such a bad reputation.

Later at dinner You, Cali, Richter, Jovick, and Standish are all at your long table. There are books and food spread everywhere. It seems messy to outsiders but to you it's just a table. Every surface was like that in your new home. Littered with books, scrolls, inkwells, quills, papers, books. Everything a mage or sorcerer would find interesting. It's no wonder things get lost here.

[part 1/2]

I felt combat was a bit weird, how do other people do it? Or was this fine for everyone?
>>
>>2415467
Eh it's felt weird to me too but I found it entertaining none the less...

...probably because i got that amazing roll
>>

At the table you brag about your victory over Cali to which she tries to talk over you the entire time. The atmosphere at the table is quite light and jovial. “Standish, who was that man today? The one dressed in leather armor?”
“Oh him? He's from the local adventurers guild. He takes on jobs that people need done. I've actually posted a few jobs myself asking for some rarer ingredients. There are others in which the queens guard post as well, sometimes they need monsters taken out or some treasure retrieved.” Standish flips a page in a book he's reading “It's really quite a nice system. I heard quite a few that live beyond the wall have taken to becoming adventurers.”
“So yous' sayin' I could be out there right now killin' monsters and collectin' coin for it?” Richter says “I bet I would be the bess' there ever was!” Richter plays with his fork as it were a sword. Jo' looks over and laughs, then copies him. You think you could fare quite well as an adventurer, maybe after your service? Who knows.

It feels almost like Richter and Jo' have always been here. They cause no trouble and get along famously with Standish. Even Cali seems to like them a bit.

Sometimes you think about the service. A part of you is scared but you're also excited to go out and see the world. Who knows. You know the class two years above you has mostly joined up except the ones too sick to fight. In just two short years you'll be in the military. Your friends, Trois, Cross and Victoss seem less than excited to go out. Even Cali seems a bit afraid. Richter and Jo' seem quite excited. Standish has mentioned in the past that he will be sad there will be no more help in the shop after everyone leaves.

What will be your main focus for the next year?

This is a pretty long into to cha makeing
But its fun

After school and sometimes even before you spend time with Cali and Standish learning as much as you can from them. More so from Standish than Cali. Standish has taught you how to better control the flow of mana. Cali has taught you how to create a bit of mana, not enough to cast defensive or offensive spells but maybe enough to cast candlelight's worth of light. Very useful. Cali and you practice everything you know daily. Refining your skills. You feel more confident in your abilities. [Which spell do we rank up? Illusion, Mend, Force Push, Muru.]

It's been another year in your life and nothing really changes. You start to think this is how your life will always be. More and more adventurers come around to sell random items of importance and stock up on potions of various uses, mostly healing. Standish teaches everyone in the house how to make basic healing potions. It's quite easy, grind some everleaf pour into boiling water, add some crushed sigmic mushrooms while it's boiling. Simmer for about an hour. Let cool and drink. It tastes dreadful but it works. Based on the potency of the ingredients used effects can happen a mere five minutes after drinking to up to an hour. It's a little family secret that the kids have basically made the healing potions for the store for the past year. Jovick especially likes alchemy.

You are now fourteen. You and Cali have to start thinking of your service more seriously. You've met some of the people in the army, they come around to buy weapons or healing potions among other things. You discuss some things you might be doing. They mention basic training then it's off to monster slaying in the east. That quick, huh. You're kind of nervous but knowing Cali will have your back you feel better.

Ms Clari brings in a guest one day. He leads new wizards and witches to basic and then teaches them the ways of war. His name is Jayce. Jayce explains that the magical teams are vastly different than the none magical teams. Magical teams operate in three person cells. Typically, mage, sorcerer, and a none magic specialist. The magic side of the team will never change, it will always be the same Mage and Sorcerer. This leads both sorcerer and mages mana to harmonize easier. The specialist will change from mission to mission. None magic units usually operate in four man teams. Ms. Clari wants you choose potential partners to practice with for the next year, until you're sent off.

Ms Clari welcomes your choice of partner, Callisandra. You like Victoss but you feel he's not the right candidate; for now. “It's fine” Victoss says “Trois wanted to practice with me, he said 'our mana flows together like water'. I kind of have to agree with him!” Victoss says with a smile. Everyone else in the class seems to pair up as expected. Mage's and sorcerers seem to be equal parts in this group. Ms. Clari seems happy with the result. She retreats to her desk to do paperwork. “It's free time with your partner until the lunch bell. Feel free to discuss what you two would like to learn and whatnot.” she turns back to her paperwork.

“Hmm. I thought you would have picked your boyfriend, Vic.” Callisandra guffaws at her own joke, you force a smile. “Look if we're going to be working together we need to know what spells, each power word- Right, you don't know any power words.” Cali touches her hand to her chin and stares forward “Well I'll tell you what I know and you tell me what you know. I know the power words and spells for Muru, Mend, Force Push, Frozen Dagger, and Flame Manipulate. All basic spells a witch should know.” Cali says with a hint of smugness. You tell her all you know. “Hm. Decent. Good base. We can work with that.” she starts to flip her book. “This, we should work on this.” You struggle to read her advanced book. “Hiero-what? Thuem-vicious? Pra-grimoire? What does any of this stuff mean?” you say scrunching your face in confusion. “Well.” Cali perks up and points her chin to air, as Ms. Clari does when teaching “It means a great deal of things but most of all” she pushes up glasses that aren't there “It means a pair of wizards and witches can combine their power into a spell that is larger and more powerful than the sum of their parts.” Cali snaps the book closed, dropping the charade. “We can join our mana and release a great spell.” Cali says plainly. “The only problem is choosing which one, we only have so much time to learn. About a year or so?” you nod in agreement. “Well here's a list of some combo spells I think we could learn.”

After practicing force push with Cali and Standish you feel like youre getting to know it better. You can now push your target to the side, pull your target towards you. The power is now increased from twenty feet to twenty five feet.

[Pick 1]
>Mind Blast: Both spell casters blast all nearby minds with over sensory information, stunning them for 2d3 turns.
>Crushing Prison: Both casters create a cage around the target where gravity is enough to push the target down for 2d3 turns. [This spell will work on targets that cannot normally be knocked down or stunned.]
>Healing Rain: One caster summons a rain cloud while the other caster blesses it with healing properties. Heals all living creatures within the rain clouds radius. The cloud will heal for 1d6 per turn. The cloud will last 1d6 turns.

If we're gonna go the melee sorcerer route then this is the best option

Having a certain capture tactic seems rather useful, and the other two seem a bit to indiscriminate for use on a battlefield. The effects are good, but the rain would heal enemies as well as allies, and the mind blast would stun allies as much as it would enemies.

And so it was another year had passed. Quicker than you could imagine. Of course you spent time with friends and family but most importantly you developed skills necessary to survive. It was time. You are of age. You were given a weeks warning to pack your things. The only thing you wanted was a journal, a pencil, and your obsidian dagger. Standish had the blacksmith make you a poleaxe and he also had the enchantress make a mana stone necklace. Standish says any mage can charge a mana stone with mana for you to use magic, even if there's no mage or leyline around. For the first charge, he's put his own mana into it. He hopes you'll use it wisely. He presented Cali with a magical cloak. When mana is channeled through the lining it becomes hard as iron, of course you cannot move while its being channeled but it'll give you some time to think. Standish looks at both of you and can't help but smile that old familiar smile. Richter seems to be on the verge of tears he tries to talk but between his accent and his blubbering you can't understand he just grabs your hands and sobs. Jovick simply gives you and Cali a handshake a nod. When Jo' shakes your hand he gives you a gold coin on the sly.

“I am so proud of the people you've become. I love you both more than you could ever imagine.”

And with that you're off. You walk with Cali up the mountainside. The higher you go the nicer the buildings get. The shinier everything gets as well. You didn't even know this part of Obsguard existed. It's stunning. You feel as if you're just getting to Obsguard for the first time, again. You and Cali walk to to a long green building that's seemingly made of fabric, it's about as big as the marketplace near your house. This is where you were instructed to go. You see about a quarter of your classmates from school along with other schools students as well. They've all gathered around two boys arguing. “There's no way we'll get combat missions right after basic training, it's dumb. And you're stupid for thinking that.” the boy with dark red hair says “I don't care what you think, you're a stupid kid after all. My dad says it's a surefire thing. It happened to last years trainees!” rebuts the blonde haired kid. Jayce comes from within the tent and instructs everyone to get into a line.

“Queen Adela has vowed to help the northern kingdoms do battle with the barbarians. Seems the north is on the verge of losing everything. Things are not going great. I will not lie.” Jayce says “After you complete basic training you'll be transported to the front line and given jobs to do.”
“As we're clearly better than the rest of these riff-raff hopefully we get a comfy position near the backlines.” Cali whispers to you.

You're not even sure what you want.

You thought basic training would be just learning a few spells and reading some books, like school but more strict. You could not have been more wrong. Jayce has turned into a completely different person from the kind man that would stop by the shop every once in awhile to a hardcore screaming sadist. You thank your lucky stars that you've been training your body as well as your mind because no one is allowed to use magic to aid them in the physical portion of training.

You've been split up between sorcerers and mages. Seems people who chose sorcerer are more aggressive than you like. Day after day people seem to argue over the silliest things, his hair is too long, he's looking at me wrong, he said this, she said that. There have been a few physical altercations but no one here is strong enough to do any real damage, yet. The use of magic is strictly forbidden. Any use of magic within the training grounds has your training cut short and you sent to the vanguard, you're hoping it's a bluff but some other other 'problem' kids seem to be missing after using magic in a fight or to cheat on the obstacle course.

You feel tired after a full day of running the team obstacle course, you run with Cali, Tory and yourself in the cell. Tory is a boy from another school. He's quite chatty in the morning the dies down in the afternoon. He's competent as far as other mages go. Apparently today you've beaten the record for fastest time to clear the course without the use of magic. The old record winner was a cell lead by the red haired kid you saw at orientation.

As you return from the course heading towards the barracks for some sleep the ginger kid you saw at beginning week is clearly looking for someone, you hope it's not you. You think his name is Robin but you can't remember. “Hey, you.” Robin points at you “You cheated today. There is no way you beat MY record without using magic.” You feel too tired to deal with this. But as you look around there seems to be no one here. Everyone seems to have dissipated.
“What do you want, Ricky?” you say getting his name wrong on purpose. “I think we need to teach you a lesson, cheaters don't get far here.” the rest of Robin's cell comes from seemingly nowhere, you think they're using magic to conceal their movements.

It's a three vs one situation, what do you do?

As they appear from seemingly no where you keep a straight face and look bored. You know you're physically stronger than most people here, and you for sure have more life experience than anyone here. And these three look like no challenge, Robin's back-up consists of a kid you've got a full head of height on, and someone the same height as you but much skinnier. With confidence you say “It's been a while since I've killed anything. Come on, then.” Robin's back up seems intimidated by what you've said “Robby, maybe this ain't such a good idea.” says the taller one. “Yea, he seems serious, this one's Amon, right? Heard he's the devil's child born in the dark wood.” remarks the smaller one. Both of Robin's back up take a half step backwards. Robin takes a second to reassess the situation “It's just some stupid time.” Robin deflates “Let's go boys.” they turn around and walk off together. You feel a ton of relief; You don't think you could have beaten them.

The sun wakes you at dawn, as it has every day since you got here. Walking to the mess tent you meet up with Tory along the way and see Cali already there, reading as usual. You used to love waking up, normally to Standish's fantastic breakfast. But here all you get is mush. A grey 'soup' mixed with milk. Apparently it has everything you need, which seems true to an extent, at least you never seem hungry or wanting for more after you've eaten- slurped it down. A part of you wonders what it really is. As more and more people wake up and slowly file in for breakfast the ambient noise of people talking seems to get louder and louder as time goes on. Of course Tory is the only one talking as the three of you eat. Tory talks about how we beat Robin's cell in the obstacle course, he also mentions how the current rumour is there's some sort of wizz-kid in the camp over from us and that his name is Troy or something. You think there's a strong possibility that it's Trois, of course he would be making waves.

“Alright boys and girls pack your things. We're starting a new part of training. It will be a form of training introduced in this year.” Jayce looks around at everyone in the mess tent “Since the northern kingdoms are a dense forest. Not unlike the one to the south of us here, we will train there starting later this evening.” Jayce begins to leave but turns around “Also there will be a small test of your skill.” Jayce grins “The first test will have you mock combat against each other.”

You've put in time in the wood. You know how things works, how things are supposed to act. You feel like you have a good chance at winning this challenge; If you were solo. You can tell just by looking at him that Tory has never left the city. Hell, he's even told you so before. Something about seeing the world while in the service. Callisandra has seen some stuff on the road before she met you but I doubt it was survive in the woods alone for a year kind of thing. The horn for a meeting sounds and everyone gathers around your barracks.

You get in line with Tory and Cali and wait. Jayce comes out the barracks “So here's how things will break down.” Jayce says looking around at everyone. “We will take everyone to the wood south of us, you will be dropped off with your cell and one handler.” Jayce starts walking down the line “The handler will not help you unless you get attacked by something you cannot handle such as a bear or a pack of wolves.” Jayce pauses and looks at some recruit “And to stop you from actually murdering each other.” Jayce keeps walking “You will be fighting each other. The goal however is to impress your handler enough to pass. Your handlers will judge how well you survive and how well you fight.” Jayce reads from a piece of paper “There are supply caches hidden around the forest.” Jayce seems to scroll down the page and skip some stuff “Surviving the four weeks only gives your handler more time to observe you. You could potentially only survive a day and impress your handler enough to pass you.” Jayce puts his papers down and heads to the front of the line. “Are there any questions?”

>(Write in some questions. Maybe it's not clear what we're doing.)
>Remain silent and wait.

QM here! This is going to be basically the last 'tutorial'. If you fail any challenge or combat beyond this will have terrible consequences such as character deaths, or even Amon's death. Amon dying will result in the quest being over. There will be clear warnings if Amon is in risk of dying, though. If you have any questions about this part just ask in spoiler tags.

"You're being graded on both. We need to see how much more we need to teach you before you're shipped off. It would be pointless to send someone who hasn't learned a god damn thing this entire time just to die pointlessly on the frontlines." Jayce pauses a moment. "Another reason being is we're assessing your strengths. Let's say you manage to avoid everyone and survive the entire time. Maybe you would be better suited as a saboteur behind enemy lines." Jayce looks around "Or let's say you fought everyone you could and won every single fight. You would be best suited for vanguard duty." Callisandra gives you a look that says vanguard duty is not an option. "And what is inside the cache's are clean water, food, warm clothing, mana stones, weapons, tools. Things to make your life easier. Not every box contains every item. Sometimes you will find just water and food or just weapons. This ensures you will keep hunting for boxes if you do not get what you wanted."

"Are there any more questions?" Jayce slowly looks at this line of recruits.

"Well, well. It seems we have someone that's a little informed. Yes. Last year the trainees thought they could create a society in the woods. Every team working together in harmony. This is NOT what we're here for." Jayce takes a breath. "We were getting no combat data. Let's just say instructors and handlers had to step in and give us combat data first hand." Jayce smiles "Most of those kids had another month in the woods. Without the caches the second time around."

No one else raises their hand or speaks up. “Good. Pack up. We meet up in one hour. Report to the southern gate barracks to meet your handlers.” Jayce dismisses you with a quick hand gesture and returns to the barracks. You return to your tent and gather what little items you left there. You always carry what's essential on your body, obsidian dagger and your mana stone necklace. Everything else in your mind is secondary. Cali and Tory have already gotten their things and seem to be waiting for you. You all head towards the southern gate together.

“So what do you think it'll be like” Asks the very naive Tory. “Well, I think this time around for me it'll be much easier.” You remark.
“So it's true then.”
“What's true?”
“That you're the devils child found in the wood.”
“Only half truths.”
Cali interrupts “We found him on the side of the road in the dark wood a few years back. He was admiring the road if I recall correctly. Oh and about that whole devils child thing, I spread silly rumors when I was younger. I had thought it would make people dislike him but it had the opposite effect.”
Tory lets a chuckle loose then pauses “Why were you admiring the road? Roads are everywhere.”
“Well, it wasn't there a year prior. And the rocks were so smooth. I was trying to figure out how to replicate the road for my shelter.” You haven't thought about this in awhile.

Tory is filled with questions about your time in the wood but it's mostly fluff. You answer and answer until you reach the southern gate, which takes a lot less time than you feel has passed. It's kind of fun remembering the woods. In a way you're excited to go back.

There are a few groups here already but you seem to be one of the first. You see a group of adult mages and sorcerers all wearing exotic robes and dresses emblazoned with medals and jewelry, some are wearing nearly nothing, Some are wearing official Obsguard uniforms. Everyone seems to come from all walks of life. You see a few familiar faces among the students that have arrived already, Victoss and Cross to be exact, it seems they're paired with a young girl you've never seen before.

“Would you get a look at her? She's wearing barely anything! For Obs sake I can see her breasts” Cali seems disgusted with the tall dark skinned woman with long straight black hair wearing what seems to be ropes and thread. You find her particularly easy on the eyes. ”Well she does seem to be from a far away place, Cali.” Tory breaks your train of thought “I've never seen anyone like her before.” You nod in agreement. You wonder if it's a spell that makes her skin so dark.

“All right everyone. I will call out your names and you will come see me at the front. We will assign you your handlers for the next month.” Jayce shouts over everyone. You wait for your name to be called.

Enough time has passed that more and more students have arrived and are now being assigned handlers. You see mages from everywhere here. Today you've seen people from far away exotic places and even new races you didn't even know existed. You saw your first elf, you could not tell the gender of it. Very slender and pretty, you hope it was a girl. You saw your first beastman up close, it was a cat. Short black fur with a white mouth. The cat looked very human with the only the face changed. You've only heard of the Cambri before but seeing one in person left your jaw open. This particular cambri had dark red skin long white hair and yellow filled eyes that seemed to glow under the sun. They have legs that are backwards like a goat.

“Everbright!” You stop gawking at the group and walk to the front with your team “Amon and Callisandra Everbright?” Jayce asks, you and cali both nod “This is your handler for the month.” He gestures towards the slim beastwoman wearing red garb to his right. “Her name is Quinn the Red. Quinn these three are Amon Everbright, Callisandra Everbright, and Tory Novim.”
“Ah so you two are siblings? That is adorable!” Quinn says with a very high pitched voice. “Hopefully we will make the next month enjoyable for all of us!” Quinn is wearing what appears to be very fine clothing that's mostly red with white trim. She carries a rapier and a very large red mana stone, one that looks very different than the one's you've seen before. One thing that stands out right away after looking at her is her eyes. They're a very deep green with the pupil going vertically. As with every other new race you've seen today you can't help but stare. “Next.” Jayce yells and the four of you move on.

“Quinn, what makes you want to train newer magic users like us?” Cali inquires
“Well my dear, it's either this or I go to the front line.” Quinn winks at Cali. You think Quinn has a very light accent you've never heard before. It's quite pleasant to the ear. “Understandable” remarks Cali “I kind- We kind of want the same thing then. To avoid this silly war at all costs.” The four of you walk to your carriage and begin your journey to the wood.

It will take a few days for you to get there. You pass time asking Quinn questions of where she's from and how she became a sorcerer. Turns out she's from a well off family of sorcerers to the south and she wanted to roam the world. As all of her family has done. Obsguard was hiring teachers to train and mercenaries to fight. She thought teaching would be easier than fighting so here she is.

Now it's time for Quinn's line of questioning. “When we get to the wood what is your plan? Are you to fight or merely survive?” Cali and Tory seem to be looking to you for instruction.

Quinn gives you a curious look “Hm.” Quinn looks at Cali “I would have imagined the next 'Puck' would have been the leader of the group. Seems I was mistaken.” the mood seems to have taken a total reversal from jovial to gloomy.
“Amon has the most experience in the wood. Letting someone else take charge is sometimes necessary.” Cali says defensively. Tory seems a bit surprised “Aren't you here to help us, Quinn?”
“I'm here to observe, darling. Nothing more, nothing less.” Quinn says with a smile revealing her pearly white fangs that melts your heart. Tory seems to be smitten as well. Cali seems less than pleased.

You arrive at night, or you think it's night. Never could tell in the dark wood. The carriage has it's torches lit but it's pointless you can't see more than fifteen feet in front of you. Darkness surrounds the party. It's just as a dark as you remember. Comforting. You've never been afraid of the dark, though you can't say the same for Cali or Tory. They demand more light the deeper you go. Quinn doesn't seem to have a problem, seems her eyes can see in the dark to an extent.

You all see a magic message inscribed on a tree near the road. The handler instructs the carriage driver to halt, seems he cannot see the message that you all can. The horses slow and eventually stop. Quinn leaps from the carriage to the tree, she's eerily fast and silent. Quinn reads the message for a moment “Here is our stop, driver. Thank you for your time.” She gives a half bow which the carriage driver nods to. “Come, children. Gather your things.” You gather your bag and hop off. Cali and Tory do the same. As the last of you get off the carriage it begins to move. You all watch as the carriage fades into darkness.

“Well, go on check your things. I assume you were only given standard gear. We must forage for the rest.” Quinn says, you assume shes smiling that devilish smile of hers but it's so dark you cannot tell.
“Candla, obera, singla.” Cali says monotonously as she snaps her fingers. A light appears from her hands that floats above you all giving you a decent amount of light. “At least now we can see.” Cali smugly remarks. You begin to rummage through your leather bag. You find:

Inventory
[Obsidian Dagger, 3d4 damage, currently equipped on lower back.]
[Mana Stone, filled with mana, currently equipped around neck]
[1x 2 Liter Water Bladder filled with drinking water, 1 liter consumed per day.]
[7x Rations, one consumed per day.]
[2x Basic Healing Potions. 3D6 healing.]
[1x 10 foot rope.]
[1x Bedroll]
[1x Thin Metal Knife. Mostly for utility. Can be used as weapon for 1d3 damage.]

“This is it? How are we going to live?” Tory says with panic in his voice. “Did we all get the same items?” Cali asks, she motions for your and Tory's bag she quickly goes through both your bags “It looks like we all got the exact same thing.” This isn't so bad you think.

“The message read that some teams are being dropped off still. We cannot do anything until everyone is here. There is about sixty teams in total. Almost double last year.” Quinn grins “After the first month, it was a total war.” Quinn snaps back to reality “We can start making moves in about” Quinn looks up to the top of the forest, you see nothing but she clearly sees something “About two hours. You're free to discuss your plans until then.” Quinn sits down on the ground and leans on a nearby tree. Her eyes reflect the light from Cali's light, like a cat's would.

“Well our first action should be finding shelter.” You double check your bag to make sure you didn't miss anyhing “We need water too, we only have enough for about three days if we really stretch it.” You pack everything back to how it was “So we need a creek or a stream.”
“Is it always this quiet?” Tory asks you
“Usually.” you nod
“The city is always making noise, this is weird. It'll take some time to get used to.” Tory says to no one in particular.

You feel like the appropriate amount of time has passed, you guessed right as Quinn breaks the silence. “It's time.” Quinn springs up “I'll keep my distance. However I'll always be with you” Quinn winks and blows a kiss towards Cali. She fades into the darkness, the last thing you see is the light reflecting off of her cat-like eyes.

“Well what kind of shelter should we be looking for?” Tory asks. As you begin to think of a reply not too far off you hear explosions. Magic creating lights and explosions, you can clearly see silhouettes of your fellow students fighting. The shadows seem to dance around you as the fighting gets more intense. You were within one hundred meters of two other teams and you didn't even notice. For a moment you think.

>You could wait for the fight to die down. The winners will be weak it'll be easy supplies.
>Avoid fight completely and find shelter first.
>Avoid fight and find a source of water.
