Stage 187: Judgemental.

Meeting your personal Seer's mother is generally not supposed to be a situation where one questions how safe it is to do so. Meeting her in Hell after being temporarily dead is one thing, but meeting her in Hell after being temporarily dead because she's a demon is another matter entirely.

Er Yin's mother is a powerful enough demon to have a heart and real blood, not just demon essence within her body. Her blood is still fused with demonic essence, but it is also actually blood. As you understand it, that she has internal organs and real blood means she is a very high ranking demon, and therefore a very powerful one in the hierarchy of Enma-Oh's domain. She has kindly offered to escort you to the dais where King Zhuanlun Xue (or Xue Zhuanlun – you're not quite sure if family name is first or second in China, much less in Hell) is holding court.

Since you've actually been summoned you are apparently a priority situation, and Mo Ku Jen's efforts have opened an easily traversed passage among the dead and the demons who suffer and serve here. The problem of course is why she seems to be doing it. There is the fact that she has taken an interest in you; you're not sure if it because you noticed her when others did not seem to, your lack of fear of her. Water Eyes has told you she is fascinated by your many contradictory and intricate natures. You are fairly certain that she doesn't know you associate with (and dearly love) her daughter, but you can't be certain of that. On the other hand, she might know of your nature as a demon tamer, which means she could try and escape not only hell, but being a demon. On the tail, that could just be a ruse. Or you might simply be mistaken.

There's no real way to find out because what Water Eyes has told you is that she's both incredibly intelligent and cunning, and capable of incredible plans and plots when she isn't being lazy about it. That makes her unpredictable, and that's never a good thing when dealing with demons. She's been congenial enough for now.

It also explains why Er Yin doesn't have a familial name. Dragons generally don't use them, and Mo Ku Jen's name has been taken from her....and everyone else. It's forbidden to be spoken, not in the “you're not allowed” manner but in the “no one is capable of doing so” manner. Such an edict points towards either a very, very powerful being punishing her, or an act so heinous that her name was stricken from the world.

Despite this she's both cute and charming. Cute in the younger child and idol-like manner, not the sugary-sweet manner. Her current outfit is exotically Chinese in every way, but has enough modern touches that you know she's been to the Middle Kingdom recently – perhaps even Japan, considering her outfit has some Japanese flourishes. She'd fit right in to Harajuku.

None of this is helping you get closer to a decision about how you'll repay her efforts on your behalf, if it's even necessary or possible.

[] What's her goal? What's her angle? Does she even have one?
[] I just so happen to know a little something about your daughter....tall, draconic, big booms?
[] That Shrine to Enma-Oh? What was that about?
[] You know, being where we are and being who I am, I can't help but question your motives....
[] Ask her about her rank – that other demon seemed awfully deferential, not to mention willing to let her bypass protocol.

[+] Perhaps subtly ask about her knowledge of her daughter and yourself.

Walking through the throngs of those who are waiting to be judged worthy of reincarnation – though honestly you're not quite certain if that's exactly as simple as it sounds – you glance sidelong at the delicate demon girl who walks by your side. Most of the souls here hardly acknowledge either your or her existence; those that do only seem to react to yours. It seems to be some quality of hers to be largely unnoticed, but it's either not selective or doesn't work against divinity. Though some of the more powerful demons clearly noticed her. Well, one at least.

“I imagine you are powerful enough to enter the outside world regularly,” you suggest conversationally, and she glances at you with those dark eyes, that delicate, almost coy smile gracing her painted (maybe painted?) lips. “Do you watch over your ancestors? I have hard some of the powerful devils do.”

That seems to surprise her. “'I did not expect one of the Japanese to know the difference between devils and demons so well,” she replies mildly.

“Oh, we have different words for them. Akuma, as opposed to the average youkai, or ma. The name you are suing clearly states you're not a demon, but a devil, more or less. You're very powerful, and highly placed – that jade demon seemed fairly confident you had nothing to fear from anyone bothering us.” Basic stalling tactic, of course – she doesn't want to answer, while trying to coax information from you. “I have heard your name before, after all.”

She looks at you curiously. “Yes, you mentioned this; may I ask whom you have heard it from? I go by many names in the middle Kingdom, but rarely the one that I possess at the moment. I do not recall being in Japan however; I would surely remember being in such a lovely land as yours.” Now that's interesting – calling a land she's never been to lovely? Very transparent sort of way to say she's been there while claiming not to have been.

“Well, that is kind of why I was asking about your descendants. Naturally they would have been from when you were alive, but that is such a difficult thing to determine when you can take such a delicate and beautiful form as the one you now possess.” She smiles brightly and her eyes crinkle; she's genuinely amused. “I hope I'm not being offensive.”

“This is my original appearance, Ryuu Ryukuza,” she mentions mildly, still smiling. You do a quick double take – she can't be more than fourteen or so. A fragile fifteen at very best. Her smile widens. “It was common practice among the nobility to take husbands and wives very young, to protect the fortunes which could become hotly contested in that age.”

[] Okay, that's somewhat alarming. Do you mind me asking when that was?

[+] Only one daughter?

'In Japan we call those kinds of arrangements lolicon or shotacon....they're not really popular and mostly illegal. Well, I can't say they're unpopular in entertainment.” She tilts her head and smiles at you, looking a little lost. You're not fooled for an instant- it's very obvious to you that she understands. “Of course, that kind of suggests that the person I thought might be your daughter probably isn't your daughter. Or else you must have died at a very young age.”

“The latter, to be honest. I did have a single daughter.” She smiles faintly. “A beautiful girl-child. She was like you, a dragon. Silver haired and silver nails. Her eyes were a lighter shade of blue than your scales are. She was very small, very delicate. We called her Su, to avoid bad luck.”

“Unadorned? How cute!” You mean it too. So very unlike Er Yin. “You give actual names at three years, as I recall....I'm sorry you never heard your daughter's.” She shakes her head mildly. “Only the one child? I'm sorry.”

“I would have made a poor mother,” she admits, glancing over at a massive ox-headed oni thrashing several slaves, and separation them from each other. “I did end up here after all. The gods' vengeance, or a clever servant. Impossible to say, really. It was long ago.” She walks you to the steps leading up to where King Zhuanlun holds court. Two powerful tiger headed demons move towards you, but Mo Ku Jen takes a single step ahead of you. They both take note of her and both immediately bow, almost curling over and standing on their heads in their rush to lower their heads fast enough to reach the floor.

You look between the two, and then watch as they creep away even though she's past them. “I admit to being fairly ignorant of the ranking systems demons use....but I'm absolutely positive you're much further up the scale than I thought you were a moment ago. The other demon was deferential....these two are frightened of you.”

“Is that so? Well, you needn't concern yourself with it. I admit to being well placed in his most Loathsome Majesty's service, but you needn't concern yourself with me.” Mo Ku Jen smiles sweetly and holds up a hand as two massive demons, one red, the other blue, step forward, their three eyes blazing with light. Their heads are wreathed in flame; one carries a massive bell pf bronze and holds the clapper like a huge club, and the other a three pronged spear. Both immediately halt, and glare down at her with luminous eyes.

“King Xue has demanded this one's presence. I escort her to his lordship.” Her voice is pleasant and sweet, and backed by cool authority.

The red one on the left lifts the clapper. “Do you speak truth, Devil Bone Nun?” he says aloud without opening his tusked and fanged maw.

“By what right do you command us to stay our hands?” the red one demands, his breath and hot hiss in your ears despite the lack of moving mouth.

“You are not Ah and Oh, and do not stand before me in judgment, Number Eight-Two-Nine. Don't presume more than your station.” He snarls and his brother in blue bows and backs away slowly. The red one doesn't retreat at first. “Stand down, or face my wrath; you're no snake mother.” her disdain is actually something you can taste and smell, bitter and sour by turns. She's tense though, apparently not trusting these two in the slightest.

“This is not an end to it, Un-named Mother,” he growls hatefully, but he too bows, and steps back, turning away once he is near his posting.

She relaxes and you start up the steps with her once more, the black mirror looming over your both. “Now, see, that just makes me worry about ulterior motives,” you complain, gesturing at the cowed demons. She smiles again, amused.

“Would it ease your mind if I admitted to ulterior motives?” You frown slightly, and she smiles beatifically. “Well, suffice it to say you are completely safe from me.”

I dunno, I feel like Ryukusa has plenty of experience with liars and manipulators at this point. If she's asking for a promise she probably won't settle for something easily circumvented at least.

Yeah, being a demon I think she might not care and seems to be pretty into the hell power game, but if she cares that's a pretty big deal to us I feel.
>>
I think she would be kind of insulted if Ryukusa believed she can trust her.

She *is* a Devil, after all, being bad is good for them, and the family ties don't change that.

Or, in other words:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdEo_t-iVbM
>>
>>2411686
And we kind of are planning on ending the world, by most peoples worldview we are pretty fucking super evil tier.
>>
>>2411691

We're not planning to end the world, just Japan.

Also, my point is that assuming a Devil isn't up to something devious could be seen as insulting.

'Ending' is such a strong word. It's more a transformation is all! Just have to be positive about it.

That's not really Ryukusa's fault that other pantheons are a lot less subtle than Amaterasu.
>>
>>2411703
....anon, I think we need to work on your definition of 'subtle'.
>>
>>2411701
Which was a potential future.
>>
>>2411707
I admit, Amaterasu didn't set a very high bar, in fact you could say the bar wasn't raised at all but just like... laying on the ground, but it's still something the other deities failed to clear.
>>
>>2411703

I know, this is what I'm saying.

>>2411696
>>2411698

It's going to be the end of something. It's important to call it what it is. Even if there will be a beginning afterward.

That Ryukusa is planning to make it as benevolent as she can says a lot about her.

>>2411703
>>2411711

Amaterasu isn't subtle. She would be fine with Ryukusa doing far less zeal that she is, as long as it's not a butchering.
>>
[x] But that's what a demon would say!
[x] Make me a binding promise....
[X] All right, I'll trust you a little further.
[XX] So....your daughter is a mystery to you?
[+] I suppose we're equally safe from one another, then!
[+] Please excuse this impolitic lizard.
[+] Your granddaughter will be in a safer world thanks to your daughter's work.
[+] ….mom-in-law.

You tilt your head and lash your tail slowly. “I hope I am not being pedantic by pointing out most demons would sat those very things? Well, the latter, definitely. The first....it's an interesting question. Would you be willing to swear an oath to that effect?”

She glances at you sidelong, her smile widening significantly. “That is the kind of promise that would distress Enma-Oh were he to catch wind of such a thing, especially if made to someone like yourself, or perhaps the Xuan Wu.” That makes you raise your eyebrows significantly. The Black Turtle Snake who if the ruler of the Northern Heavens? The god of kung fu? You actively think through and recall him being referred to a as a tamer of demons, especially after his innards wandered off and started attacking people on their own when he was made an immortal.

So, a promise like that has repercussions if the King of Hell discovers it; that's a good reason to be circumspect. “Well then, we must presume we are safe from one another for a while longer, and I am in your further care, Mo Ku Jen.” She inclines her head when you bow slightly. You're almost at the top, and either side is flanked by gigantic mukade centipedes formed of black steel. Their eyes actually move, though, following your travel up the stairs. “Okay, those are scary.” They stand about fifty feet high – and stretch along the edges of the vast dais where the long line of penitent souls waits to stand before the massive black mirror.

“Enma-Oh's warriors. They serve him and him alone. There are only five left.” you wonder what could have destroyed such a monstrosity. “I do appreciate your earnestness, you know. I would not insult your intelligence by making a promise you could not know I would keep. That would be difficult for you to forgive.”

“Mmh. It would be a problem. I hope you will forgive me if I brought up a painful subject concerning a woman who might be your daughter.” You consider as you walk towards the massive throne of yellow and white jade far in the distance, where demons of many kinds stand before a black jade platform where some white-robed soul kneels before King Zhuanlun. “She is doing her best to create a world her daughter can do well in. I think, if she were your daughter, you might be proud, if you were to consider her as you would from the mindset of a mother who was less a demon and more a purified soul.”

The Devil Bone Nun turns to you, smiling still, and waves one hand before her chest, a 'pardon me' gesture. “I could not currently be such a person as kind as all that. I have dedicated my life to serving the King of Hell, and would not be myself worthy to consider such a fine, upstanding person as worthy of anything but destruction, should I be inclined to regard such a person at all, as I am now!” Curious. Very curious. Condemning herself as an evil creature, and yet suggesting that she would take pride in such a woman as you suggest Er Yin might be – if she were not a demon.

“Such a woman is a mystery to you then? That is both a hard thing, and a good thing, if all is as you say it is, Mo Ku Jen.” You walks slowly towards the place of judgment, glancing at the varied images in the mirror, a life lived badly, cruel and malicious. No reincarnation for them, you suspect. “But then, you are something of a self admitted liar, aren't you?”

Her grin this time bares her pearly teeth, and she turns her attention to the judgment before you. “I can see why it is said that to speak with Water dragonettes and Water dragonnes, is to risk having one's heart torn out and displayed.”

“You flatter me,” you murmur with a coy smile. The double meaning is even more pointed in your language than it would be in hers.

You arrive at the judgment in silence, and the soul is pierced with barbed poles, the white robes becoming drenched in red. It's not a physical thing, but it screams and bleeds like one. Then again, you saw what was on the mirror. Also, not your place to pass judgment, you remind yourself. The powerfully built man on the throne leans forward, as a hideous four eyed demon with white skin and a fanged maw whispers without moving it's mouth. Gozu oni and mezu oni, of course, and several of the jade green ones with the scrolls, some open and reading from them in constant litanies and prayers, crimes of souls that are to be judged, and blessings of the King of Demons. Black and red and blue warriors and guards as well, like those that took the last hapless soul away.

He's quite a handsome fellow, and he stands up, folding a set of red and gold plaques into a single plaque as he moves towards you. He looks almost human, but the palpable aura of threat he carries with him makes you feel rather unclean and makes your skin crawl. Still, you've dealt with worse. Not often, mind you, but you have dealt with worse.

You're pretty sure you would be hard pressed in a fight even with Horobi's power.

The White Demon steps up and slams his staff on the ground, making the rings in the tip chime violently, as the thunder fades. He gestures and two demons carry a book so massive it strains the ten foot tall gozu and mezu oni who carry it. They hold it up as they crouch, both shaking as they support the massive tome. The white demon opens the book to the middle, and turns several pages. When it halts – and King Zhuanlun is watching you this entire time – it intones is a bored monotone:

“Ryuu Ryukusa, Daimyo of the Ryuu Clan, Tamer of the Cloud riding Servant of Kuroukami, Father of Five Dragons-” That one gets a lot of odd looks from the demons, and Mo Ku Jen looks surprised. You smile modestly. “-Keeper of the God Butchering Tool, Breaker of the Iron Fan of the Lady Iron Fan-” More looks and very quiet murmurs. “Enemy of the Possessor of Goddesses, Traveler in the Far Places of the Broken Darkness, Servant of the Sun, Husband of the Rice Deity-” This time the murmurs start, quickly silenced by king Zhuanlun smacking his plaque against his hand. “-Bearer of the Mantle of Destruction, Eater of Immortal Flesh.” You kind of blush at that one.

King Zhuanlun looks at you, tapping his plaque against his shoulder lightly. “So. Killed in the mortal realm. Not enlightened, though. What do you have to say for yourself?”

Wonder how Er Yin feels about her mom.
>>

If it's not rude to say:
>"With all due respect, 'Fiancee of the Enlightened Nogitsune Swordswoman' should probably figure on this list.

Let's not forget our cute samurai we're planing to marry soon.

>"As to what I have to say, I did not expect that chastising one of the oldest priestesses of Japan and expelling the presence of a Nue from my home to be so taxing. I present you with my sincere apologize for the troubles this little lizard is causing, great Judge."
>>

We should definitely ask her when we get back. Even if it might be a painful subject for her. Well, it IS old history by now so it shouldn't be too bad.
>>
>>2411806

I feel like we should address the Lady Iron Fan business.

It's really unfortunate for her that this fox broke her fan on our skin like a brute.
>>
>>2411865
While that is true, Lady Iron Fan isn't exactly the most rational being around so I think we were told she is very unlikely to care.

>>

We're in Hell, they should be scared.

Quite literally, we're not locked in there with the, they're locking in there with us.

Since we're just a temporary guest while they're bound here by the rules of Enmah-Oh.

>>2411873

True, but eh, the Judge might think differently.
>>
>>2411865

>>
[XXX] Not too terribly much. Just doing my duty.
[XXX] Terribly sorry for the imposition!
[XX] I wasn't aware I had to say anything, actually.
[X] I have this black jade coin, if that matters.
[+] Saying too much is what got me killed, actually. More how I said it, than what I said, really.
[+] Should be getting back, to be honest.
[+] But, if you need details, chastising a head priestess of a temple was surprisingly strenuous, and please forgive me for causing trouble for you.
[+] You might want to put an addendum about the foxy enlightened swordswoman I plan on marrying.
[+] About that damn fan....

Glancing at the white demon, you lean over and murmur – though he's a goodly distance away and everyone can hear you – to him. “You should probably add that I'll be marrying the Enlightened Immortal Swordswoman Yuuhi the Foxy as well, you know.” The white demon looks affronted that you are addressing him, so you add, “And for the record, Lady Iron Fan's Iron Fan was broken against me, not by me.”

The demon looks mightily offended, and Mo Ku Jen turns her head, stiffing girlish giggles. King Zhuanlun raises an eyebrow and rests one elbow on his arm and plays with his mustache, while several demons look angry and there is a shuffling and intemperance murmurs and sounds of annoyance, disgust, and anger. The white demon crashes the foot of his staff onto the floor, creating a massive crack of thunder and making the chime peal prettily again. This silences the court.

Studying the King of the Tenth Hell, Judge of the Souls for Reincarnation, you perform a stately and formal salute. “Greetings, King Zhuanlun Xue, Judge of the Tenth Hell, Guide of Souls To their Reincarnation, Keeper of the Black Mirror!” He looks suitably impressed. Standing straight, you flick your hair to the side, wind and water smoothing it all out nice and clean. “”While I was not aware I was required to say anything, so I ave no speech readied for your Highness. Also, saying too much killed me the last time I did so.” There are mutters and soft laughter, and Mo Ku Jen hides another smile. “Chastising ancient and powerful priestesses for bringing dangerous youkai into my home where my wives and children are present was really quite a bit more taxing than expected.”

His hand is covering his mouth, but you can see the smile he's concealing. The white demon is even more offended, if that's possible.
>>
>>2411980
“So I haven't much to say, aside from the basic fact that I was merely performing my duty, and I was not expecting to become an imposition on your time and august self. Please excuse this small lizard for becoming such an imposition, and excuse her as she must be getting back to her duties, if it pleases your Highness.” You mimic the penitent gesture the mezu oni performed, bowing over your clasped hands and shaking them before your head. “Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxmia culpa!”

Mo Ku Jen is staring at you like you've gone mad, and the demons are shuffling around, looking confused, while the white one looks pained. The hearty laughter that erupts from the King of the Tenth Layer of Hell is rather shocking to hear, and he spreads his plaques before her, shaking his head. “Oh, that's a good one. 'Mea cupla!'” He selects one. “You are condemned to time served and released to the world of the living at once.” The white demon makes a small throat noise, which King Zhuanlun ignores, and several other demons protest.

Zhuanlun gestures casually without looking and two of them explore, drenching their fellows in demonic ichor. The rest shut the fuck up.

“King Zhuanlun, this demon wishes to move to the Middle Kingdom to enact His Most Loathsome Majesty's will upon the world.” Mo Ku Jen's delicate voice startles most of the demons and many of them immediately fall to their faces and most of the rest cower. The white demon stands tall and looks studiously vigilant, while the chanting demons speak up, their chants ringing clearly.

“I wasn't made aware of this, Number Two.” You blink. If you understand the hierarchy at all, that means she's literally Enma-Oh's second in command, able to speak and act in his name in every way. She's also entirely flesh and blood, a real creature and alive as most other demons are not. “Still, if you wish it, it can be arranged. See King Biencheng and see if he'll allow you to leave.” Now that's interesting. She's not allowed to leave except by a specific King's grace, despite being the number two demon in all the Chinese Hells.

Dudes, why would you want to UNLEASH ENMAH-OH'S NUMBER 2 ON THE WORLD, if I may ask?

She might be our mother-in-law, but she's as wicked as they come. By literal definition.
>>
>>2412025
A little incest never killed anybody, just as kiki and kiku.
>>
>>2412029
True, I suppose the act would be more about the symbolism than the actual inherent value of the coin.

>>2412032
I do agrew somewhat, but it sounds like we don't get much of a say on the matter? If she was refused that's one thing, but I dunno what Ryukusa can do about it now besides keeping an eye on her, which is marginally easier of we're on her good side.
>>
>>2412032
I can kind of understand their logic, that if she is as wicked and conniving as they come, and is essentially the vice president of Chinese Hell (possible emphasis on "Vice") then her incarnating in the mortal world is probably inevitable.
>>
>>2412032
1. Because unless I'm mistaken she's perfectly capable of and willing to leave on her own, so we might as well have her were we can see her.
2. Because the possibility of having her indebted for the coin may be useful.
3. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but I think I detect just the slightest, most tenuous potential for redemption. Maybe.

>>2412035
Exactly. Besides, everybody's having OUR kids in the end, so it's not really a problem.

>You and His Most Loathsome Majesty just have finished to handle that whole who-is-responsible-for-destruction-in-Japan business

>>
>>2412035
I was gonna post something about not everyone being into that, but...I think the idea of Kiki somehow being more kinky than Er Yin would kind of torpedo that line of thinking.

Still, it's nice to vet it first with all affected parties.
>>

He also made all the other demons back off.

Point is, we don't want to have him go "oh, you let one of mine come, it means the deal is off" or something like that.
>>
>>2412061
We'd also immediately top Emma's personal shitlist. He wouldn't even have a say, he's obligated to crush any demon that attempts to leave his service, and there is no fucking way we can slip her out unnoticed.

That said, being on the King of Hell's shitlist is kinda a sign that we're doing our job properly, and frankly if we keep obstructing him (which we will) we're going to end up on it anyway.
>>
>>2412073

What.

The bastard in a suit doesn't belong to Chinese Hell.

>>2412085

Fair enough, but Ryukusa isn't omniscient either, and this place is a nest of intrigue.

As an added concern I've just realized, we don't want to insult King Biencheng by substituting his authority with money.

“Well, there is one thing,” he mentions casually as he sips some more tea. “A way to make both our issues easier.” Uh oh. “I do want what you want – a more spiritually accessible people, people who are more aware of the true nature of the world than they have now. My method is slow and careful, but it does work. If you were to turn your hand to my methods, you wouldn't have to destroy anything, not so completely. Since I will be going home soon, I would need someone to assist my interests here.” He knows he hasn't any business being here then. Knew it all along, most likely, but he needed to talk about this.

The inevitable deal. Except....if you're assisting his interests, that means he already has an infrastructure in use. He's not going to leave you in charge of anything, just place you under someone else's hand. Probably not Oba-san; she's her own goddess, and wouldn't have a use for Enma-Oh's help....

….crap. Taisho Ryoga, of course. Half-demon, trying to create and breed more monstrosities, using spiritual and biological techniques. Fuck. Enma's pawn.

[-] Let it lie; not your business.
[X] Ask if there is a reason he cannot grant her request personally.
[XX] If it's a duty that involves destruction, perhaps you could borrow her?
[XXX] Pay her way for her with the coin.
[+] Ask if the duty might involve Enma-Oh's edict concerning Japan.

It seems....awfully coincidental that she would choose this particular time to visit the material world. To be here, of all times. To assist you in getting to King Zhuanlun without incident. Her lies – her deliberately obvious lies – were strange as well. She's been to Japan. She worked hard at avoiding answering the questions concerning whether or not she watched her ancestors. She avoided informing you of her true nature until it was unavoidable, and yet pointed out that she knew you were a demon tamer and that it would be dangerous to accept any such taming while in Hell. That Enma-Oh destroys tamed demons of his court when he finds them, obviously, and with good....reason....

….Enma-Oh can't go to Japan.

Is she defecting?

King Zhuanlun hasn't dismissed you so you lean over and turn to Mo Ku Jen. “Would this, maybe, have something to do with, I dunno, assisting Enma-Oh's people in Japan?” King Zhuanlun frowns, not at you, but at Mo Ku Jen.

She smiles sweetly. “Of course not. His people has been expressly forbidden from going to Japan to further his efforts and works.” King Zhuanlun glances at the mile tall Black Mirror of the Souls, and she is inf act telling the truth; her goal is to travel to her homeland and look into her descendants, as well as begin work on a project there.

“Too bad. If it had been a destructive purpose I would have looked into borrowing you.” She smiles, and inclines her head, flattered by your compliment of her abilities. “Though, if I may ask....why do you need King Biencheng's permission? I thought King Zhuanlun was the authority of transferring souls from Hell to the Middle Kingdom.” You feel, more than see the King of the Tenth Level of Hell stiffen, irritated. Ah ha, a rivalry!

Mo Ku Jen looks down, not blushing, but not entirely unashamed. “It is also the Hell where stands the City of Innocent Deaths, where much rehabilitation of souls takes place. Because of the nature of the crimes for which I was condemned, King Biencheng was assigned me as a particularly concerning case, and he still holds that power over me, as granted by Enma-Oh, unless extraordinary circumstances allow my leaving of Diyu – ah, so sorry, Hell – otherwise, Ryuu Ryukusa.” Interesting. Very interesting.
>>
>>2412289
“It is unfortunate, but Enma-Oh personally granted that right to King Biencheng, and has not seen fit to rescind it. Now, Ryuu Ryukusa, if you would be so kind as to stand before me....” King Zhuanlun steps forward, selecting one of the red and gold plaques form the array that floats before him.

“Of course, your highness,” you murmur. Then you turn back to Mo Ku Jen. “It has been a delightful pleasure to meet you, Mother-In-Law, and I hope you will visit our home some time in the near future, your duties permitting!” To her shock – and the uproarious laughter of the demons in attendance (and the despair of the white clerk demon) you hug her tightly, your tail wrapping around her legs and your breasts pressed against her adorable face.

King Zhuanlun smirks, and lifts the plaque as you release the slender demon.

“King Zhuanlun,” she speaks, and he lowers the plaque.

“Yes?” he asks irritably. She walks up and offers him the black jade coin you slipped into her hand during the hug. His eyes widen, and then his expression breaks into a vindictive, evil grin. “I see. You have paid for passage from Hell in the traditional manner; you are permitted to journey to thee middle Kingdoms.”

“Thank you, your Highness,” she murmurs and salutes him, before stepping towards him and vanishing. The King grins, tipping you a wink, and throws the plaque down, which bursts into smoke and lightning. You gasp for breath, your heart pounding in your chest as you sit up in the bedroom, scaring the hell out of Yui and nearly dying again as Yuuhi's sword appears at your throat. Yui's taiko sticks are in hand and sparks fly between them, and you are suddenly smothered in warm softness as an joyous Kiki-hime throws herself at you.

You hold her close and sigh, glad to be home.

Thanks for running, Zhuanlun seems like a pretty cool guy.

She knows where to get the tools to do so, and would not hesitate to take the tools from those who would try, but she herself is uninterested.
In hindsight, while our Water Eyes told us that she has no interest in deposing Enma, and is fine with her position on the infernal ladder, that doesn't necessarily mean she's loyal to him, I suppose.

As it applies to Oba-san, the title Possessor of goddesses is a somewhat risky interpretation - as anons have said, it may indicate further possessions she doesn't know about, but it's also entirely possible that it could reflect her status as a miko, where she is possessed bya goddess, but technically is their owner and protector as a miko.
