Winona yawns, rubbing at her eyes. You take her temperature and take a look. “Hm. Your fever’s gone down. But I would probably still take the day off. I wouldn’t risk it. You might get other people sick too.”

Winona squints. “How come you aren’t worried about you getting sick?”

“Well, I’ve already been sick this year, so I’m fine,” you say. Your immune system is as impenetrable as the Great Wall of China. Occasionally one guy gets through but the vast majority get left wanting outside of its great mass. “Just take my advice and stay home for today. I can even get you a sick day from your CO if you want.”

“It’s fine, I will,” Winona mutters. She flops back onto her bed, groaning. “Uuuugh, I hate being sick though. I get a day off but I feel too terrible to do anything about it!” She throws her legs and arms up. “I want to be better!”

“Maybe you’d be better if you took your medicine this morning,” you say quietly.

“Hmph.” Winona immediately rolls away, not aiming to face you. You roll your eyes.

You open the door to the office, with Denise following behind you. Athena looks over at you from her desk. “Oh look how decided to come to work today.” You roll your eyes for the second time today. “How you doing, Ellie? You didn’t catch Winona’s cold, right?”

“I’m fine,” you say. “Thanks for asking.” You drop your bag by your desk and sit down. “If you’re wondering, she’s doing alright. She just needs another day to recover. I was gonna clear it with her CO real quick before we get to any actual work. Is there anything outstanding that I need to get to today?”

Tessa smiles happily. “There is one thing actually.” Oh joy. “The Naval Studies classroom lecture programs are requesting your assistance today.”

“What? Why?”

“There’s an FLE program,” says Tessa. Oh. Oooohhh… “You just need to give a short speech to the students taking the class and then you’re done!” Yeah but… FLE? A speech?

“What kind of speech?” you ask hesitantly. Everyone looks at you, expectantly.

Tessa explains it as, “Just a by-the-numbers ‘this course is optional and if you wish to opt-out, you may sign a paper’ thing. Though, I will admit, I am aware you do have a boyfriend so that can make things a little awkward. And people might ask questions as well.”

“Why is everyone so obsessed with me having a boyfriend?” you say. You blink. “N- Not that- Ugh.”

Hilda says, “This wouldn’t be that big of a deal if you weren’t on one of the only all-girls Academyships in the US Academyship fleet.” That is absolutely true and it really hurts to admit that.

“… is there anything that actually does require my attention today?” you ask Tessa.

Tessa says, “Well, besides that, the Captain wants you to oversee the offloading of special export items today. They want to make sure the crews are careful. There’s fragile stuff in there.”

> Special export oversight it is!

You sigh. “I can slot in some time to give a short speech. How hard can it be anyway?”

You stand in front of at least a hundred students in a theatre style lecture hall. All of them wear Naval Studies uniforms and bored expressions as you stand at the front of the class. The actual teacher sits at his desk, waiting for you give a speech at the podium. Oh boy. You take a breath. “Welcome to Family Life Education. If you’re here, that means you’ve elected to take the lecture on the basics of the human body and its changes and the importance of human…” You hesitate for a second. “… reproduction.” There a few giggles here and there in the crowd. “As a secular educational facility, Lafayette Girls Academy will educate you all in all forms of birth control and safe sex.” A few more giggles here and there. Uugh… “The topics that will be discussed include changes to the female body, changes to the male body, the basics of puberty, the methods of sexual reproduction, and what you can do to prevent teenage pregnancy through the usage of either abstinence or through condoms.”

You’ve only been here five minutes and you want to die.

As the girls in the back continue giggling and whispering, you continue. “If you wish to opt out of this lecture. You may raise your hand, and you will be given a slip of paper to read and sign and you will be allowed to leave the lecture. Any questions?”

Everyone raises their hands.

> “That don’t involve my boyfriend.”
> “No. We have not had sex yet. Put your hands down.”
> “No questions then. Good luck.”

“That don’t involve my boyfriend.”

All the hands go down. “Alright. Good,” you say. “Now then. I wish you all good luck. And make sure to treat this class seriously. Thank you.” Everyone applauds politely as you step back from the podium and start towards the door. You want to die. Oh God… The teacher comes up to the podium.

“Now, girls,” she says. “Let’s begin with puberty.”

“I mean, I’d laugh too if someone said something about sex,” says Fina. Denise stifles a giggle. You walk in front of those two as you oversee the offloading of the special export cargo. Things are going smoothly enough that you feel almost unneeded here. It’s Hadely’s crew working it too so you can be guaranteed that they won’t make any mistakes here. Fina nudges you. “Chin up, Ellie. Sorry if we’re busting your balls like this.”

“No, no, it’s fine.” You sigh. “I adore having my relationship with a boy be paraded around the school as if I were a bearded lady in a circus.”

Denise says, “You know most of those bearded ladies are actually just really feminine guys right?”

“Regardless, it’s behind me. I wish to leave it there,” you state very firmly. The two snap silent. You look over at Hadley as she stands by the gangplank. “Hadley! How are things?”

Hadley waves to you, grinning. “We’re on schedule, Ellie! We just got off containers 3 and 4, we’re waiting on the rest now.” Good, good. She steps up to you. “By the way, off work for a second. I’m really looking forward to the postseason. I feel like I can show myself off there!”

“What do you mean?”

“Well-…” She motions to her crew. “Look at ‘em!” Her crew is hard at work, carrying down crates marked fragile by hand down the gangplank. “They’re actually respecting my authority! Do you know how amazing that feels!? It- it- it’s like I’m a whole different person! It’s like, months ago I couldn’t even get these people to put their panties on, now I’m commanding one of those most efficient shifts in the logistics department!” She grins. “Ain’t that great?”

“It is! I’m glad you’ve managed to turn yourself into a fine commander,” you say. “Who knows, you might even be in my job next year.”

Hadley gasps. “You think?” she asks hopefully. Well.

Ah, what the hell. She could. You gently pat her head. She giggles, elated at being praised by you. “I know,” you say. She huffs, grinning happily. “Now get back to work. And make sure nothing gets broken. That prize money from Gertrude’s ITL win has probably run out by now.” She salutes you, then goes on back to oversee her crew.

Denise says, “It seems like the big rush is starting to slow down at least though, Ellie.”

“It is,” you say. “Number of imports and luggage is starting to go down. I think most of the freshmen have moved in and settled.” It’ll probably get bittersweet when most of them leave due to how stressful the life of a Naval Studies student can be. That’s the price of having no tuition and no need to attend regular classes. But you’re glad to have the girls you have now. You can’t ask for better girls.

With the incoming special cargo coming in, that really settles most of the outstanding issues. The work day ends pretty uneventfully.

> JOB COMPLETE
> + 5 CP

Athena and Tessa wave goodbye. “We’re going to go meet with Serafina. She asked us for tips on how to get her crew really coordinated when it counts.”

“Thanks, girls. Try not to scare them or anything,” you say. Athena grins, giving you a hearty thumbs up.

Hilda says, “I also got stuff to do with Lisa at Huxley’s shop. Good night.” With that, she too departs. Huh. You weren’t aware she knew Lisa. Maybe that’s where she gets that spare cash from.

Anyway though, maybe you’ll head back to the dorm and check in on Winona. But before anything else can happen, you receive a phone call.

An unknown number. Huh? Did you finally get a call from one of those spambots? You pick it up. “Hello. Elodie Zumwalt speaking.”

“Elodie Zumwalt.”

Mei. Your heart immediately sinks. You can recognize that condescending tone anywhere even over the phone. “Forgive me for calling if this is a bad time.”

“No, this isn’t-“ You blink. “What are you calling for?”

“I’m told Griselda is working her case with the Commissioner. There’s talk that LGA could be disqualified from the postseason due to the allegations of cheating.” You grit your teeth. “I just wanted to know if those allegations were true or not. You don’t strike me as the dishonest type. It seemed out of character.”

“Our school has phone numbers and basic data on all potential students.” Ah. Wait. Potential students? What? “Anyway. I’m glad to hear that you deny this. It would’ve made our previous matches something of a farce if you truly did cheat.”

“If you were as superior and better at Tankery than me, you would’ve beat me even if I did cheat,” you say.

“So you say,” she says. “For what it’s worth, Elodie Zumwalt, I would actually be quite crushed if it turned out you did cheat.”

“We did not cheat!” You stomp your foot. “Ugh.”

“Anyway. Since I have your attention, I may as well wish you luck in the postseason.”

You’re silent. “Oh.”

“Well, thank you. I wish you luck too.”

“Right, goodbye.” She hangs up. Well. That was an incredibly tasteful conversation. Makes your blood boil just thinking about it. You shove your phone back into your pocket then look at Denise and Fina.

Denise says, “That sounded like Mei.” You nod. “Hm. Shame she always seems to make you mad. I think you two could be lovely friends if-“ You glare a little at Denise. “… eh.” She looks away, nervously smiling. There is no way you could reconcile with that girl. You can respect her abilities in Tankery and her ability to command a team. But as a person? No. You shake your head. She’d have to do a lot of growing up to get to your level.

Fina folds her arms. “Regardless, ma’am. Maybe we’ll get a shot at her. She could take it all.”

“That’d require beating Kursk,” you say. “And even that would be near impossible for her.” You honestly can’t imagine a situation where Mei actually beats Oryola and KGB. “The way I see it, this is probably next year’s fight.”

“If there is a next year,” Fina mutters. You quirk your brow. “Just saying. Teams are going to get better. And who knows, LGA might get disqualified.”

You roll your eyes. Augh…

You find Miss McPherson and Miss Sandusky sitting in a dinner by themselves. To think they’re catching up on their own accord. Miss Sandusky grins as she reminisces with Miss McPherson. “… and so it just whipped around, slapped us right in the face! I think Em had to wear that nose cast for like a week.” The two of them giggle a little. Miss Sandusky looks to you. “Well, well. If it isn’t LGA’s best and brightest. Come here!” She motions to a seat next to Miss McPherson.

You sit down, while Denise and Fina pull up chairs. “How have you two been?”

“We’ve been doing a lot of catching up,” says Miss Sandusky. “Mattie here and I have been reminiscing a little too. You know, Tankery today is kind of a kiddy sport. It’s not as hardcore as it used to be. I’m sure Mattie’s told you that all the time.”

“Eh, Miss McPherson actually has sold us pretty lightly on how Tankery was in the 70s,” you say. Miss McPherson smirks, sipping on her drink innocently. “Was it hard?”

Miss Sandusky says, “Well, we had to deal with a lot of things. We didn’t have the safety equipment you guys enjoy. Broken bones and fractured ribs were quite common. Dottie once played through a match with a cut on her forehead. They had to pause the match because she got blood in her eyes and she couldn’t see anymore. Then, well… it’s the 70s so you know, hippies and everything.”

Miss McPherson says, “They’d camp out in the fields during the match with protest signs.”

“Yeah.” Miss Sandusky snickers at that. “Remember that time we coordinated with Fanny’s team and ran donuts all around them?” The two of them start giggling at that. “Oh man, all that free love stuff didn’t help them then!”

Miss McPherson looks down, her smile fading a little. “Those were good times.”

“They were.” Miss Sandusky looks to you. “So, did you want us to keep blabbering about the good old days or…”

A waitress sets down a cup of coffee for all of you as Miss Sandusky starts thinking again. “Ellie, you’re aware of the flamethrower tanks, right?” You nod. “See, they were a very common and very cheap way of taking down the big heavy tanks.”

“And it was very dangerous too,” says Miss McPherson. “Thankfully the league did all it could to impose good safety restrictions to keep the crews aware from fires as well. We all had gas masks and oxygen tanks ready in case we ever faced one or two in the field. I know there used to be a team that fielded entirely flame tanks. Was that J. Walter Christie?”

“… Maybe?” Miss Sandusky furrows her brow, thinking on it. “It might’ve been von Steuben.”

“I’d have remembered if it was Steuben. They actually let boys do Tankery there.” All of you laugh a little at that. Seriously? “It was probably Christie. Fits their MO.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Miss Sandusky looks to you. “Elodie, this isn’t like a big ‘ruh-ruh’ tankery match we’re thinking back on. This was our way of getting payback.” Miss McPherson starts chortling quietly. “Ah, she remembers! She remembers!” Miss Sandusky leans forward on the table. “Now, this was a practice match with a team that had a Zippo Sherman. And their crew was…”

Miss McPherson says, “They were complete bitches.”

“Language, Mattie. There’s children here!” Miss Sandusky nudges you, winking. You roll your eyes. Fina and Denise curiously listen while eating at fries and onion rings. “Now, yes. That tank crew was full of the most high-minded, arrogant, ocean-going bitches that you’ve probably will never have the misfortune of meeting. Their commander was a huge slut, claimed she was dating three guys at once. And she was! All three of her boyfriends were sitting in the stands during the match, I met them all! None of them were aware of each other! And they got on our nerves so much that at the Tank Meet before the ITL tournament, we challenged them to a bit of Tankathalon.”

“Really?” you ask.

Miss McPherson says, “Two on two. Elimination. Loser had to be other crew’s slaves for a week. We set up in some bumfuck lowland area near Bovington.” Miss Sandusky tilts her head. “I mean… bum-… whatever.”

“Anyway.” Miss Sandusky snorts a little, then takes a sip of coffee. “We knew we didn’t have a chance at taking them down in close combat. And unfortunately Tankathalon is nothing but close combat. That’s just how it is, there’s no way you can close off an entire field on short notice. Our King Tiger is helpless there. Plus, Fanny wasn’t really too into it. We kind of dragged her into it. Poor girl.”

“We told Fanny to just sit back and let us handle it. We had a very devious plan.” Miss McPherson smirks at that.

“We snuck into their hotel, all five of us. Now, you may not know it, Elodie. But Emily was quite the maneater,” says Miss Sandusky. “Got a lot of good men jailed with her good looks. Anyway, we got the keys to their hotel rooms, and in the middle of the night, we stole their precious things.” What? You lean forward a little, now into it. You can see it now, the five of them just waltzing in in the middle of the night like marauders. “Basically, we stole all their panties.”

What.

Miss McPherson nods. “We then taped their underwear to the hull of our King Tiger. All the panties on the turret. On the front armor. Around the engine block. Everything.” They start laughing quietly at the image. Even you have to admit that the image of underwear all over a tank is both hilarious and horrifying. Denise and Fina are quietly trying not to burst into laughter. “They were furious. Because we stole EVERYTHING. Even the underwear they wore to sleep.” She smirks, wiggling her fingers a little. “Deft hands, these. Still are.”

“And because it was Tankathalon and because they never stated that we couldn’t use underwear as spaced armor, they had to go with it. So they had to tank wearing nothing under their skirts. And they couldn’t use their flame tank because that would burn their underwear!” Miss Sandusky starts laughing loudly, her gut busting at the seams.

Miss McPherson says, “We won handily.”

“It was a rout. And the best week I ever had too, having a girl from another school carry my books and do my homework for me too!” Miss Sandusky snickers at the thought of it. “Oh man. Those were the days.”

“They were,” says Miss McPherson. She looks out the window a little at the setting sun. She looks to you. “I hear the enemy’s panties are still effective spaced armor.” She looks over at you, then points her fork at you. “Don’t do what we did by the way. You’ll get kicked out of NATO. And I hear rumors some girls eschew underwear for Tankery anyway for comfort.” Ew.

“Yeah.” Miss Sandusky sighs. “We really did.” She stares down at her table, her smile dropping. “Too bad things like that just don’t last forever. Especially the way we handled things.”

“Yeah.” Miss McPherson and Miss Sandusky are quiet. The roar of passing cars and trucks is louder than them at this moment. “But I guess we grew up fine. At least none of us died or anything. But Tankery really brought us together, didn’t it?”

“It did. Better than anything else. It’s a shame things had to end the way they did but we dug our grave. We had to lie in it eventually.” Miss Sandusky slouches back, then looks at you. “You want to get everyone back together, yeah?” You nod. Of course. “Maybe it’s time we try. For real this time, Mattie.”

And with that, Miss McPherson nodded.

Maybe it is time.

You, Miss Sandusky, Miss McPherson, Denise, and Fina start walking down the street towards Miss Dillon’s residence. “I think if we get Deedee to agree to a little meetup, then we’ll be squared away. Emily’s a little shy about the whole thing but if we get Deedee aboard, she and Dottie will fall right into place too.”

“What do you propose?” you ask.

Miss Sandusky says, “Well, she ought to be at her house by tonight. Maybe we can just have a chat with her, get her back into a tank or something.” An idea bulb seems to pop off above her. In actuality, it’s just a street lamp turning on above her. “I got it! You guys still have Thaddeus, right?”

“Yeah. He belongs to the Motorcycle Club now though,” you say.

Miss Sandusky says, “Bring it around. I’ll give you the address. We’ll take her for a drive! The rumbling from a King Tiger will be a lot more welcome than just sitting on top of the washer.” Miss McPherson nudges Miss Sandusky. Sitting on top of the washer, what? You squint a little.

“Alright.” You take out your phone. “I’ll go grab the tank. I’ll need to ask Serina first.”

“We’ll go on ahead,” says Miss McPherson. With that, the two adults leave you. “We’ll text you the address in a minute!” she calls out.

Denise walks up to you, confused. “You’re not thinking they’re going to do a Panzer wakeup call, are you?”

“They probably are,” you say. “But let’s just indulge them. Just this once.” You dial Serina’s number. And in a second she answers you.

“Serina here, what’s up?”

“Serina. I need to borrow your tank. It’s important.”

“Oh, yeah! Go ahead! What do you need it for?”

“Well…”

You couldn’t quite explain it to Serina over the phone. So she ended up coming with you. “So let me get this straight. Miss McPherson used to drive this tank. And Miss Sandusky, the Inspector for the Hall Monitors, also used to do that. And so did Miss Emerson and Miss Dillon too. And they know the Commissioner of NATO, Dottie Durocher.” You nod. “Wow. Bit of a mouthful there.” You sit at the driver’s seat keeping the tank moving as Serina sits back against the turret outside. Denise and Fina sit in the turret itself, patiently.

You say, “I’m trying to get them back together.”

“Why though?” asks Serina. “They’ve already moved on it seems.”

“It just doesn’t seem right to me that they have to live with that kind of despair. Yes, they cheated, but that doesn’t mean they have to be ignored and go away forever.”

Serina says, “But if they cheated, that basically invalidates everything they did. How can you be so sure any of their accomplishments wasn’t because they cheated? How can you be so sure they were actually as good as they thought?” That-…

You sigh. That’s actually a good point.

> “Maybe you’re right. But they’re friends, and they ought to be together again just one more time.”

“Maybe you’re right, Serina. But they’re friends. And they ought to be together again just one more time. I don’t want them living their lives alone just because of something that happened decades ago.” Serina shrugs, carrying on staring forward.

To be frank, you’re honestly terrified of ending up like them. Tankery is one of your great loves after all. To see it be taken away from you because you got too into it? That’d kill you. You shove that thought away as you drive. You have to keep the revs low on the King Tiger, but because this is a King Tiger, low revs means it’s still as loud as an ogre tearing through a swamp. Dogs start barking, people start yelling out their windows at you to keep it down, it’s chaos.

Finally you arrive at the residential districts. You arrive just in front of Miss Dillon’s block. Miss McPherson and Miss Sandusky are not outside though. They’ve probably managed to get inside somehow. You text Miss McPherson that you’re there.

> EZ: I’m here with the King Tiger. What do I do now?
> MM: DD won’t let us into her apartment.
> EZ: Should I come help?
> MM: Help in any way you can please.

Hm.

> Fire a blank. That’ll get her attention.
> Go inside, see if you can get her to come out.
> EZ: No thanks, she’s your friend. You can do it!

You hop out of the driver’s hatch. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.” Serina, Denise, and Fina give you a thumbs up as you go along inside. You’re not confident enough to fire a blank shell in a neighborhood like this. You might wake up a lot of babies and that’ll wake up even more people and so on and so forth.

Plus it’d just be rude.

You step on inside the apartment complex and head up the stairs. There you find Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson standing outside one of the doors. “Here’s the diplomat,” says Miss Sandusky. She knocks on the door once more. “Deedee. We got a friend who wants to talk to you!” You step up to the door. “Go on.”

You knock on the door, more gently than Miss Sandusky did. “Miss Dillon? It’s Elodie Zumwalt. Are you in?”

“Go away!” yells Miss Dillon. “I told you all, I want nothing to do with your tanks or tank related business!” You look at Miss Sandusky. She shrugs in response. Very helpful advice. “I don’t mean to be rude to you, Elodie, but seriously just go away!”

“Miss Dillon, I don’t want to force you to come out. I just want to talk. The others want to talk too. You’re not going to help anybody by just staying in your room and ignoring us,” you say.

“You’re invading my privacy just to relive our grossly misspent youth, isn’t that bad enough!?” You look at Miss Sandusky again. What did they say to her before you got here? She shrugs again. Again, very helpful, Miss Sandusky. “Now go away or I’ll call the cops!”

“I am the cops,” says Miss Sandusky.

“Augh!”

> “The King Tiger is parked outside you know. Don’t you want to go for a drive?”
> “Well. Okay, if you don’t want to come out, that’s fine. We’ll just be going.”

Too soon for the tank. Push the sentimentality first, when she expresses any, its time for Thaddeus.

“The King Tiger is parked outside you know. Don’t you want to go for a drive?”

Miss Dillon is quiet at that. “Well.” She finally responds after a minute. “Even so. I’m not going to be tempted. How did you even find Thaddeus anyway? We buried him so good not even Gertrude Pool found it when she was forming her team. And it’s not like there are records of it ever existing thanks to what we did.”

“Trust me, I have a friend who’s good at finding things,” you remark. “Look. I won’t force you out. But it’s not healthy to be cooped up and ignoring your friends like this. We just want you to be happy. If you’re happy staying in there, then go ahead and stay in there.”

You hear a click, then see the door open. Miss Dillon slowly peeks her head out from behind the door. She glares a little at you. “So what makes you do this? Why are you trying to bring me out of my room?”

“I just feel like maybe we could bring the crew together again,” you say. “When was the last time you guys ever talked to each other?”

“Years,” says Dillon. She doesn’t seem to like admitting that. She looks at Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson. They appear quite concerned. “Look. I don’t want to make this about what happened. Okay? I like Tankery as much as the next person. But if you’re trying to get me back into it. Forget it. What’s done is done.”

"It's not about what happened at the end, it's about everything before that, the time you spent as a crew, as friends. How many people get to enjoy friendships as tight as the ones we form in tankery? The league was right to take your right to play matches, but you shouldn't have let them take your ability to be friends away too."

“It’s not about what happened at the end you know. It’s about everything before that too. You had a lot of fun as a crew, as friends. Not a lot of people get to form friendships like that. Fewer still form ones like they do in Tankery. Sure, the league was right to blacklist you. You shouldn’t have let them take away that friendship. It’s like you said, what’s done is done. So why let it continue?”

Miss Dillon says, “Can I see the tank?” You smile. Of course she can.

Miss Dillon stands outside on the curb, placing her hand on the side of the King Tiger. “You girls have been taking good care of him, right?”

“Of course!” says Serina. “He’s like our little baby. If a baby was a multi-ton death machine I guess.” Miss Dillon smirks a little, snickering. She takes a whiff of the hull for a second, then seems to shudder.

“I remember that smell,” says Miss Dillon. She leans forward on the tank, pressing her head against the metal. “Ooohh… it’s been decades.” Miss Sandusky places a hand on Miss Dillon’s shoulder. “My arms have gone absolutely limp. It feels like I’m right back home.” She smiles, biting her lip lightly. “This big guy, I missed him. I missed him so much.”

“He’s right where he should be,” says Miss McPherson.

Miss Dillon sighs. “I know it’s been a while but do you mind if we try to take him for a drive? We won’t crash him, promise.”

> “By all means.”
> “Let’s go to the training grounds first. Then we’ll allow it.”

> “By all means.”

“By all means.” You motion upwards towards the hatches. Almost if by instinct, Miss Dillon climbs up with nobody’s help. Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson do the same as well, hopping onto the turret while Miss Dillon takes the driver’s seat. The engine is still running, so it’s not like it’ll-

She throws the tank in reverse, almost throwing you all off. She brakes hard. “Oops, sorry.” Okay. This was a bad idea. She gently starts forward at a dead slow pace. Okay, that’s much better. Keep it like that. Miss Dillon pokes her head out as she drives the tank down the street. Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson sit on the turret, looking ahead as well.

You can’t help but look down at Miss Dillon and find a few happy tears running down her face. This is probably the first time in forever that she’s got to operate a tank. She grins, the wind flowing through her hair as she takes the tank down memory lane. You set yourself down in the next hatch over and simply watch.

She then takes a hard corner and absolutely crashes right through it. Nobody gets hurt and nothing gets destroyed but holy hell slow down. “Sorry, sorry!” Miss Dillon waves it off. “Just getting it back together.” You look back and find Miss McPherson and Miss Sandusky with faces that are unfazed by this. Meanwhile Denise, Fina, and Serina look like they’re about to jump off in fright. She starts speeding down the main street, happily laughing as she takes the King Tiger to its maximum speed.

She then brakes to a halt, almost throwing you all off as she stops in front of the Tank Hangar. She blinks, rubbing at her eyes a little. “Oh man.” She feels her chest. “Feel like I’m having a heart attack.” You stand up straight. What? “Joking. I’m not actually having a heart attack. I’m not that old! But-… my heart’s racing, Elodie.”

Miss Sandusky grins, leaning down next to Miss Dillon. “Takes you back, huh?”

“It does,” says Miss Dillon. “Only thing missing now is Dottie’s mom making us lemonade and rolling through the forests around Mount Montagne. Those were…” She leans back. “Those were good times.” She looks down, her grin fading a little. She sighs a bit, climbing up out of the hatch and sitting down on top of the hull. “Man. We got old.”

“Excuse me?” Miss Sandusky seems indignant at that.

“Just saying.” Miss Dillon looks down, twiddling at her fingers. She looks to you. “Listen, Elodie. Um. Sorry if I seemed abrasive earlier but…” She motions to the tank, then looks down, almost ashamed of herself. “I don’t know. It feels almost wrong coming back and driving a tank again. Like I don’t deserve to.”

Miss McPherson says, “Still can’t move past that?”

“Well, it was Dottie’s idea,” says Miss Dillon. You blink. What? “And we went along with it. That-… It got us a lot of kills that’s for sure but man.” She pats the top of the armor once more. “I don’t know.” She drops off the tank. “I should head back. It’s getting late.”

“Don’t want to drive around some more?” asks Miss McPherson.

“No, no. I’m good.” She looks up at you. “Hey, Elodie. Um. Thanks, I guess. And, good luck with the tournament, okay?”

“Thank you. I hope you’ll come watch.” She shrugs. That’s probably a maybe then. Regardless, she waves goodbye and with a smile she blasts a finger gun at Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson. And off into the night she goes, walking away.

Miss Sandusky and Miss McPherson step off as well. “Well, we won’t bother you guys much either. It’s getting late. All of you should head to sleep,” says Miss McPherson.

“But it’s the weekend!” says Serina. Miss McPherson gives her a “really?” look. Serina rolls her eyes. “Ugh. Teachers ruining everything.”

“Excuse me, TA?” asks Miss McPherson.

“I mean, teachers making everything better and fun!” Serina grins forcibly, snickering too.

“That’s better,” says Miss McPherson. “Let us know who you’re going up against as soon as you learn. Me and Sandy here would like to start making bets. No cash money involved. It’s just trading favors as all.”

“If it’s Gagetown, you guys might be in the clear,” says Miss Sandusky. “As good as Meryl is, she’s surrounded by idiots. Her team structure is basically just her carrying like Desmond Doss. That’s gonna fall flat.” Miss McPherson shrugs, apparently not confident in that estimate. “Anyway, you all have a nice night.” With that, the two of them wave goodbye and take their leaves too.

Serina pouts a little. “Hmph. I can never get into their heads. Old people confuse me.”

“They were just like us once,” you say. “Lot of love for Tankery, love for life too.” You lean back, smirking. “We’re gonna end up like them one day too.” Serina’s eyes seem to shrink in fear. She looks at you, giving an expression that begs you to say that you’re joking. You keep on smirking. Serina bangs her head on the barrel, not wanting to believe it.

Rather, like all generations, you hope to be better than the last one.
