Hi hi. You guys mind if we move along the story for a bit?

***

Through the following week, we continue the travel towardsa Bastion, seeing the landscape and weather change along the way. The opal mountain range is left behind, and the great northern mountain range comes into view to the north.

It is known by as many names as there are peoples living around it. The wall, dragonback, icespires, and breath of Lana, but the protectorate maps register it simple as the Great Wall.

The vegetation shifts from subtropical to mild, and through we are fairly north and the weather should be much colder, it looks like the great wall stops most of it from reaching south, which gives us a slightly fresh, somewhat dry weather with plenty of evergreen forests under the ship.

Moving north, we could either visit silverspire, the great northern elf realm, or maybe visit one of the small city states in the region.

Either way, the ship needs a checkup and repairs after pushing on for so long.

Unlike Yellowleaves, that turned into a closed state after the Gryphon war (Eopolis vs Alquia), the Silverspire forest has always been a very cosmopolitan state.

It joined the coalition quite early in the war, and its king is a personal friend of our grandfather, which meant there were plenty of elven troops in the army, though their job was mostly as magic artillery, healers, or ranged support.

Regardless, they immediately fell in love with the rockitships, and their potential for trade and travel, which means that their rockitship port is actually the largest after Eopolis' own, high up on their ancient trees, with excellent facilities for repairing, loading and unloading the ships.

Rather than building their own, though, they'd rather buy them from us, so they have a rather small but quite active fleet. As a mediterranean state, the possibility of open trade with far away nations was one they quickly embraced, and you can see now that the formerly pastoral, heavily traditional elves have gone from wearing clothes made from vegetal fibers, to silk and cotton. From drinking elven wine and goat's milk in wooden cups, to enjoying a wide variety of loquors from around the world, in cups of crystal and silver, and from having a very simple taste for poetry and painting as entertainment, to plays, dances and sculptures displayed weekly, if not daily, in their many language squares.

Indeed, the elves of Silverspire have greatly benefitted from their open attitude and newly found love for navigation, which means that the port is extremely busy as we approach.

It amuses us to find they beat us to giving harpies full citizenship, and a cute harpy in a blue and white uniform flies over towards us as we approach, with a small beret on her head, and two bright, glowing sticks, to direct us towards our assigned hangar.

Hm, yup, she looks cute. But her hair is quite short, almost boyish, isn't it? Is that the fashion here?

She guides us slowly towards the hangar. As our ship is quite small, its one of the smaller hangars in the lower levels of the multi-decked port, but that's not a bad thing, since the massive crows that can be moving on the higher platforms, are absent here, and so we find the process of entering the country to be rather painless and quick.

Asking for repairs and ship upkeep its also a rather quick business, and we're left with at least a evening of free time to look around the city.

As expected, it looks like short hair is fashiionable, or at least, rolled up into a high bun.

Well, there's no judging for tastes.

Isn’t giving our Harpies citizenship just a matter of giving them a house and land?
Is the choice about asking how it’s done, or about making our Harpies into citizens of Silverspire?

yeah but there's already a harpy community here, so it may be nice to have neighbors

***

We walk through the docks with our friends, though Grumnir prefers to stay at the ship. No, its not a dwarf/elf thing, he just wants to take a look at what the repair crew is doing so he can apply some of it in the future.

And so, we are together with Miiyau and Lyann as we walk out of the docks.

The shopping district is right there, but as you'd expect, the prices are quite high. It is nice to see their huge selection of goods, though, including local goods as well as some that are advertised simply as 'from the north,' which draws some attention as this is one of the northmost cities we know of.

The products from the north seem to be cosmetics and accessories in various precious metals, but little else, though there is a mask that looks made from white wood or ivory, though its too wide to be from an elephant's tusk or anything else we know of.

Its wide, and colorful, with bright lines of green, blue and red on it, showing a face that is neighter angry nor agressive, though its not exactly smiling, either. It looks... penside.

[Runic][Uuni mask][6 slots]
A traditional garsdian mask, this ceremonial mask counts as a head piece. (Helm)

DR (Damage Resistance) 25
SR (Spell Resistance) 25

Spells cost 75% less while wearing this mask, and each time a spell is cast, your total mana pool increases by 10, but the effects are lost upon removing it.

The rest of its enchantments are what you'd expect from an armor piece of its quality.

The price is so high, its beyond worth its weight in gold, at 150.000 gold couns. It's been a long while since we saw such a expensive item.

"Eldric, what are you looking at?" - Lyann peeks in from the side. She was looking at a different shop, and bought a small case of cosmetics.

The store looks like a pretty important shop, quite high class. The clerks are dressed in matching clothes, so it has a rather modern feel.

"This mask?" - he confirms as he takes it down from the showcase
"Yes, please tell me about it."
"It is said that to the north of Lana's breath, there is a land of whooly men, forbidden to outsiders. The men's faces look like regular men, though they are quite tall, despite not bing goliaths. I have not seen them myself, but the tales say that they have extremely furry bodies, and only wear a few decorative armor pieces on their shoulders."
"It does not sound like a place of sophisticated casters."
"Well, the females are the casters, it seems. They are never without their masks, though, so maybe their faces are furry too? Their culture is quite a mistery, since it looks like the men obey the women completely, but at other times it seems to be the other way around. Noone is admitted in their lands, however."
"Well, that doesn't says much."
"I am sorry I could not be more useful. That is pretty much all that is known. Ah, they have no tails, though."

Some sort of intelligent sasquash, then? Yeti? Sounds like a hominid, at least.

They may not need to wear armor or clothes if their bodies are so adapted to the cold, and the masks could be a piece of their culture. Maybe akin to a veil?

"Oh, come think about it, we do have a matching weapon, hold on a moment please."

The elf goes into the store and comes back with a long staff. Its made from the same ivory as the mask, though it is so long that you doubt it can be the tusk of anything. It is straight and brightly decorated with tiny golden accessories hanging from a tip decorated with colorful feathers, that seem completely off for a snow-bound culture.

It looks like something you'd expect from a cartoonish witch doctor type.

[Runic][Uuni Staff][10 slots]
The traditional staff of power belonging to a garsdale uuni. An item with exceptional craftmanship.

Mana regeneration: 1% of your missing mana per second. 15% of damage taken is converted into mana.

This is the first time we see a item with more than 6 slots. We did not even think it was possible to go past 6, let alone all the way into the double digits.

Other than the mana generating enchantments, though, it has no other special abilities, though we are quite sure we could enchant it without much trouble.

"Well, it looks like magic is very important in their lives, but they don't actually enchant their items..." - we comment while looking at the staff - "Its abilities are innate, not enchantments."
"If you are interested, its value has yet to be calculated. You could purchase it as a set with the mask for 400.000 total"

Well, we get Lyann to pay for it. She can use the spear and mask for now, though I wonder if she can use the mask 'up' and still get the benefits? Well, either way, we're taking them to the keep to take a look to it together with Asmund and Okaba laterm though.

For now, lets try a local dungeon and see how it works.

***

After thanking the clerk, we leave the shop and head to the adventurer's guild.

The local dungeons are:

>Wind spirits

"Uhm? Really?" - Lyann seems interested, but somehow fidgety."

By the way, there's a headband to hold the mask in place, but she can pull it up and it sort of looks like a long winged hat,,, well, that's fine, because she's so beautiful, so hiding her face feels...

"What is it?"
"Ah, no, its been years since its been just us in a dungeon, so I was a little happy."
"I'm here too, you knyaw!?" - Miiyau points out
"Ah, if boss hadn't stayed at the ship, it would be like old times."

Since Miiyau's level is in the low 200's, we're trying out the floor 200 for now. Well, at least she's leveled like we explained her to, so she has now multiple classes,

Depending on how it goes, we could just go back to the guild and pirchase a teleport key for further down later.

As we head in, we appear in the safe room, and see that the dungeon is fairly standard looking. A vast cavern with glowing moss on the walls.

"Lets go as usual. I'll take point and you girls support from the back. Lyann, you're in charge of buffs and debuffs, while Miiyau does crowd control and area damage."
"Alright, nya!"
"Yes."

We walk forth from the safe room, and soon spot a group of stone elementals. They look surprisingly refined, as in, rather than the bulky existences we'd expect, they look like genderless sculptures with plenty of ornaments over their bodies, as well as complicated carvings.

Their bodies are either marble white, or grey.

"Alright, I'll head in."

As we approach, they immediately start shooting rocks at us! And not even bullet size, but cannon size! It looks as if they're shooting their fists and regrowing them at high speed.

Lyann dances and debuffs them. With her current level, she manages to turn all five into toads for a few seconds, which obviously shreds their defenses, but we only manage to kill two, as their hp seems to be ridiculously high.

When they return to normal, they resume their attack, slamming or shooting their fists at us.

Well, we're doing okay damage, but it still feels a bit slow since they're not that high level.

As Miiyau casts swarm, they crumble rather quickly, though.

"Uhmm.. pretty tough."

We pick up the loot. Its [Legendary][Heartstone] and [Legendary][Granite Heart] x4

Looking at the heartstone:

****

As building materials, a Heartstone automatically corrects and directs the flow of magical energy within a construct, increasing its hp and adding a regeneration ability, as well as increasing the efficiency of its abilities.

****

"Eh? Isn't this a golem core, then? Are these things golems?" - we comment
"I don't think so. Its probably just a rare drop."
"Grumnir has used it before, to make a spear that channels mana, nya."
"I see..."

So, barring a seroes pf catastrophe, theres no reason for several kings of hominids coexisting, I think.

***

We decide to stay and farm these for a while, and so by the time we leave, we have seven 'Heartstone' with us.

Just so you know, they happen to be a extremely rare drop, you know? We pretty much commited an elemental genocide down there in the dungeon. Well, they just respawn so its not as if they'll actualky go extinct, anyway.

"Its alright if we keep the heartsones?" - we ask Miiyau
"Its not as if Grumnir or I need them, just remember to count them as part of your share." - she replies while walking with us
"Fair enough."

We go back to the docks after looking around for a while. The local architecture is a mix of what we imagined elven style to be like, with plenty of wood shaped in amazing ways.

There's no living trees shaped as homes, though, but there are plenty of treetop homes.

There's also numerous floor buildings, and even though they are in a very solid style, and built with stone and concrete, they are still quite beautiful, with plenty of decorations that look like they are made of flowing water, as the carvings seem to flow over the stone.

As for the local fashion... its finally here! The cute elf girls with tiny green dresses are here! Its a bit of a shame that almost everyone keeps their hair short or pulled up into bobs, knots and the like... I wonder what they have against long hair?

The men on the other side are mostly wearing robes or pants and shirts... its pretty boring. Anyway, it looks like 'traditional' clothes are not the only fashion, as there are a few victorian-like eopolitan and sbastian dresses here and there.

Well, the elf girls look cute either way, but the weather feels fresh enough it looks like a pretty good idea to cover up some.

"Eldric, this thing feels weird..." - comments Lyann
"What does?"
"The mask, it feels really hot. Not burning hot, just... as if I was wearing two coats, or more."
"Hmm..."

Looking at it again, it seems it has a item set skill 'on' since she's using the mask and the staff right now.

It grants cold immunity, as well as resistance to acid and fire, plus a self-cleaning function and a deodorant one... this thing actually is enchanted, but its a bit confusing since its both a rather inoquous but very everyday-life oriented set of enchantments.

Well, if they live in the tundra to the north, the cold immunity seems understandable, but it also looks like it has fire and acid resistance built in.

Maybe a volcano?

And it also has a cleaning and perfume ability... well, I don't want to say 'well, its an item for females' but... it is, and it suggests a heavy importance on cleanliness. Not what you'd expect from a tribal society in the arsehole of the world.

1/?
>>
>>2430773

Then again, cleanliness is a big step in disease and parasite prevention, so maybe that means it is all the more important, actually?

"It doesn't looks harmful, but I can guess why you are feeling so hot. Its meant for an artic enviroment, after all..." - we feel her forehead and neck, and sure enough, its almost as if she had a fever.

This thing is REALLY good at keeping you warm in the artic, isn't it?

"Alright, give me a mom- hmm... [Remove Curse]... [Remove Curse] isn't working."
"Nya?"
"I can't take the mask off. I can store the staff, though."
"If it isn't a curse, maybe its some sort of anti-theft buff?"

We check Lyann, and sure enough, it looks like its just a buff to prevent her losing the mask. Once we know that, we can dispel it easily enough, and she takes it off.

"I can't tell its a bad thing, but the clerk should have told us about it."
"Maybe he didn't know, nya?"
"He did say they hadn't yet appraised the staff." - adds Lyann
"I guess."

We head back to the ship once Lyann finally takes off the mask.

"It was really hot." -says our quite hot redhead as she combs back her hair.

Well, even if we say that, she's just pushing off her face a few strands that had gotten glued to it with sweat. It was a rather sexy look anyway.

"What do you want these [Heartstone] thingy for, Eldric?" - Miiyau is looking at one as we walk
"Probes, golems, constructs, maybe skyships? If they can be used for skyships, there will be a huge boom in demend for them."
"I see."

We make it back to find the ship is still going through upkeep. It seems we had pushed some key systems pretty far, so they have to be changed, which means we'll be here until morning.

Weren’t we going to use “Yin, but younger” for Yang?
>>
>>2431366
Yes, why?

***

This time, we find Yin isn't at the office, for a change.

Well, the place looks downright lonely without her... and there's lots of possibilities. She may have gone to deliver or receive reports and documents anywhere within the palace, after all.

As if waiting for that moment, our fluffy tail secretary arrives with another stack of documents in her arms.

It's about from her waist to her chin, you know? Isn't that too much for a level 18 mage?

"Oh, my lord, welcome." - she says when she spots us
"Hm. Let me hold those. Don't you have a cart to carry these?"
"I don't think that would be elegant enough for the palace..." - she comments
"Then have a guard help you."
"Yes sir."

We receive the documents and carry them to the low table, then start going over them with Yin and Lyann.

"So the Hydromatic Laboratory is finally running."
"Yes my lord, the scholars have moved in already and have begun to push the facilities and their equipment."
"Well let's hope they don't break much of it, money doesn't fall from the sky."

From what we see, the army is ready for Ren's tour of the empire, and the more isolated villages will be sending a representative to the cities in order to welcome her, which is good, because if she was to go to every single village and hamlet in the continent-sized empire, it would take her well over a year to do so.

Also, the fortifications in the jade islands have been completed, and the troops have begin to be mobilized, getting ready for the [Error]s invasion.

Looks like things are marching well, and we're mostly getting reports, but there are a few notes and documents we need to look over.

There's a message from Ren, suggesting that we introduce the idea of changing our allience name from protectorate to coalition, for political reasons.

I guess we'll need to look into the differences now.

Änd well, we were a engineer, not a polititian, so let's see...

Protectorate
A state that is controlled and protected by another.
"Yellowleaves was juridically a protectorate of the Eopolitan state"

Federation
A group of states with a central government but independence in internal affairs.
"the Black Lake federation"

Well, I guess I can see how it would be hard to convince her people that entering the protectorate isnt a bad thing... what should we do?

Huh. Weren’t we always called the Northern Coalition during the War?
>>
>>2431814
Nah, it was formally the Eopolitan Protectorate, but pretty much everyone called it the northern coalition. It started as just eopolis and its satellite towns but eventually grew up and everyone just knew it as the coalition, informally.

It just never got the official name change. And of course the nobles at eopolis love that, so we'll mostly have to deal with them about it.

***

"Alright, let's talk to everyone about it."
"Uhm?" - Lyann looks up from the document she was reading to look at us
"No, just thinking out loud."

Well, looks like there's no big decision making to do today. Mostly, its just reports about stuff finally kicking off.

"Ah, that sounds nice. I like the local salads and noodles" - our redhead presses her hands together before her, as if she was quietly clapping
"Uhmm... lunch? Usually, in the palace, you have a large breakfast, then tea in the evening, and finally dinner." - comments Yin
"You don't have lunch here?"
"Is not as if we are ignorant of it, its just not the schedule. Dinner is a grand event every night, so the chefs work towards it all day."
"Well, then lets have an early tea time." - Lyann suggests while storing away the documents
"Alright. Ah, let's invite Ren."
"Bhu!?" - Yin makes a strange noise all of a sudden
"It's been a while since we visited her."

Lyann nods softly, but Yin looks quite nervous. Well, for her Ren is almost a religious figure, plus she knows she's rather mischievous, and often ends as the target of that mischievousness, so she probably has a lot of feelings about it.

But, by the time we reach the inner palace area where Ren was studying, we find that she is waiting for us with plenty of snacks, including bread filled with both vegetable and/or meat filling.

"Duke, welcome." -she says happily from where she is sitting at the table

Well, it would be wrong if the empress got up to greet a duke, I think...

Instead, we all greet her politely, and as she gestures for us, we sit down with her.

"Duke, Lyann, and my dear Yin, we are happy to see you." - she greets us with a rather shining smile

She was lonely, wasn't she?

"Yes, thank you for welcoming us." - Lyann says trying to be formal yet friendly

"Ah " - she blushes a little but smiles happily as we kiss her - "Duke, have lunch with me."

We nod, and sit down across from her.

"Here, ah~" - she lifts a bit of food towards our mouth

This is definitively a luxurious experience. Yin seems as if she didn't know what to do, which is quite understandable, I guess.

"Have you decided on the name of our alliance?" - she inquires while happily taking another bit of food to her own lips, using the same chopsticks - "Ah, an indirect kiss"
"Ah, I agree with you, but will need to explain it to my fri- I mean, the other country leaders."
"That is fine. I am sure they will approve."

Actually, we are a bit curious about how they sold their people the idea of becoming part of a protectorate...

"Please do not stereotype. Just because dwarves are good builders, it does not mean we are all stonemasons, you know? I'm a craftman, and I understand there's a tailor in town. We do leave engineering to the engineers, and such."
"I'm sorry, you're right."

"Eldric, did you bring me something?" - Elisia clings to us at the door
"Nn." - we hand some candy to our little sister

Once she runs off with it, we also hand the same amount to the rest of our siblings.

"Oh, did something happen?" - Ellie looks at us from the kitchen
"The ship is under repairs until tomorrow, so we came home. for a bit."
"In that case, will you stay for dinner? Or are you going back to Alquia?"
