You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

You've finally made the long journey across the Frontier to Janice's secret mountain village, which true to your expectations, was full of demi-human animal hybrids like her and Morgan.

Now, you were face to face with their apparent leader, Chief Fardan. A man who would have commanded great presence, even without the regal antlers protruding from his head like some sort of naturally formed crown. He face, though human, was as stoic and cold as of that of any stag.

And the first comment he made upon seeing you all was about Morgan, much to her dismay, if you were judging her mortified expression correctly.

If these people have a problem with White Wolf Morgan for being a different sub-species, then they're going to have a problem with Red Dragon Templar.

You just give a reassuring nod at Morgan. This was her moment, after all.

Morgan bites her lip and gives you a thankful nod back before turning to the Chief.

"What do you mean by me being a white wolf?" She asks, instinctively taking one step towards the throne.

Immediately, a pair of guards emerge from the shadows, spears pointed at Morgan. A bull and a lion, if your guess was correct. The rest of the expedition tenses up, instinctively reaching for their weapons in case things got serious. Chief Fardan merely stays calm and makes a simple hand gesture to his guards, who simply nod and meld back into the shadows on either side of the throne.

"The White Wolves were... not exactly the most controllable group." Chief Fardan says in the most diplomatic terms he could manage. "Very private. Isolationist. Preferred not to get involved with any of the village's affairs unless in the most dire of circumstances."

Hm. Sounds a lot like how Morgan used to be, and still is a bit. The grim expression on Morgan's face indicated she's realized this as well.

Meanwhile, Janice and Artya look on from the rear, the concern clear in their body language.

"And how's that a problem? It's certainly their right." Morgan responds.

"Because even this Valley is a harsh land to live in, and we've only survived by banding together. Community is everything to us." Fardan leans forward from his throne and narrows his eyes. "And then one day, they simply disappeared. We had no idea why, but the green seers have all had visions of the White Wolf returning when the Valley is at the brink of destruction."

The whole room is quiet at that point.

You nudge Morgan forward, encouraging her to speak up.

"So... so you think I'm here to save you all?" She croaks, as if she didn't want to put those words into the air.

"That's the interpretation some of us believe, yes." Chief Fardan nods. "The White Wolves had left so long ago that not even I had ever met one in person, so I would be willing to extend my confidence to you..."

"Morgan." She says. "My name is Morgan."

"A fine name." Fardan nods and turns to Elias, Nino, and the Mages. "The smell of mana is thick upon you. I suppose you are the ones here to help us with our dying weirwoods."

"That is correct." Elias nods. "Though first, I am fascinated by the exact mechanics of how one can 'smell' mana! I would like to know-"

Elias is then interrupted by a painful jab from Caroline's club, reminding him to get back on point.

"My apologies." Elias coughs. "Yes, I'm here to research the trees and hopefully find the cause of their ailments."

"Excellent." Chief Fardan then looks to Janice and Artya. "I putt the well being of these newcomers under your care."

"Yes, Chief!" Janice bows her head at the same time as Artya.

"Janice can show you to your lodgings as well as where the weirwoods have begun to die." Fardan nods.

"This way, everyone!" Janice motions for you all to follow her.

"Well, we had just come from a long expedition." Elias points out. "I would like some time to settle down and really start analyzing my samples."

"I'm still sore all over..." Valentia groans.

"Maybe I can finally get the squirt's clothes washed." Naru sighs.

You just nod in agreement. You all needed some rest.

"All right, I know just the place!" Janice winks. "Follow me!"

And as if on cue, you could see the sky starting to turn orange as Sol falls closer to the horizon. Laterns light up along the streets and within the windows to hold back the darkness. There's also a noticeably large crowd waiting outside, no doubt to see what would happen.

"Hey! Nothing to see here, everyone! Move along, move along!" Janice waves her arms wildly to shoo them off. "Give them some privacy!"

As Janice runs interference, Artya takes over leading your group to a rather large and cozy looking building in the center of the village. Definitely looked to be some sort of communal living building. Inside, it was a bit bare, but it had all of the essentials. Walls, roof, and beds. Really all you needed, honestly.

And just like that, everyone sets out to making things more like home. Elias and the Twins quickly take the top floor to reserve it as a lab. Naru drags a kicking and thrashing Nino away for a bath. Niko and Artya tend to Valentia, who was still feeling unwell.

Morgan... seems to have disappeared again. But you do see Janice enter. This was a good opportunity to speak privately with her, if you wished.

You look to Janice, and point to her, and then to the forest. You then raise your hands up and wiggle your fingers around to indicate sparkly magic. It seems that her tribe had their own version of Mages?

"Oh, are you asking if we use magic?" Janice nods. "Yeah! We call them green seers. They're those of us who have a much deeper connection to the wierwoods. It allows them to well... 'talk' is bit too simple of a word. They can 'communicate' with the trees."

You nod. Things certainly sounded... intriguing. It was a bit too close to that filthy Elven magic, but you suppose you could give them the benefit of the doubt. They could still see the ways of Sol, at least.

"Anyways, you'll have plenty of time to talk to them tomorrow when we go check out the dying trees." Janice continues. "I don't think you'll get much trouble from them. They're the most concerned about finding a way to fix them, after all."

Well, you suppose you'd get the full measure of them when the time came.

"Hmmmm... it looks like Morgan's disappeared again, though." Janice frowns, looking around the room. "Maybe we should look for her...?"

Perhaps it was best to look for her. You start heading for the door when Janice puts a hand on your shoulder.

You shake your head. You can manage. Besides, it would be better for you to deal with Morgan in private.

"Okay..." Janice nods, a bit skeptical. "Just be careful, okay?"

You give her a thumbs up and head out the door.

By now, Sol's light was almost completely faded, giving way to darkness. There were much fewer people on the streets, as expected of a normal town. That was fine. Less people to get entangled with.

You pause to look around, trying to discern any notable landmarks. Morgan would likely gravitate to those first, being in unfamiliar territory.

Well, the most obvious landmark was the treeline, which seemed to meld with the town. Morgan always did like forests. To the other side, you could see a majestic waterfall as a pure mountain stream rolled off a high cliff. And finally, you could see a column of steam or smoke belching from the ground in the distance.

You're not sure why, but the waterfall seems to grab your attention the most. It was high up enough that it would provide a good vantage point, and looked like there wasn't any buildings up there, so it would be isolated, too. One of Morgan's favorite things.

With your destination set, you start to make your way to the cliff face. As you do so, you seem to attract the curious gazes of the village's residents.

As you move past the outskirts of the village and farther out from the developed areas, you get the feeling that you're being followed.

You feeling is quickly turned into confirmation when you find yourself surrounded by dark figures in the night, forming a circle around you. They didn't appear visibly armed, but knowing these demi-humans, they generally didn't need to be.

"Look, it's one of the outsiderssssss." One of them hisses.

"Poor thing. It has to wear all that metal like a turtle to protect itself!" Another one jeers.

"I wonder what it looks like on the inside?" Another chuckles.

You suppose that no place, not even this one, was free from troublemakers. You weren't exactly too sure how willing they were to pick a fight, but in such a lopsided situation where you were outnumbered, surrounded, and had no idea of the enemy's capabilities, you couldn't take any chances.

Unfortunately, the fact that these ruffians had no clue what a Templar was worked against your favor. They hadn't had generations of warfare and holy crusades to teach them that knights like you were to be feared, and their ignorance replaces their cowardice as they close in tighter, the whispering and chuckling getting louder among them as their mob mentality begins to kick in.

You halberd was still slung, over your shoulder, but you could easily draw it out if needed. However, you were a bit concerned that you would have a lot of explaining to do if the other demi-humans found dead ruffians littering the outskirts of their village.

You didn't need your halberd for such a trifling matter. Your armor, your fists, and your faith was more than enough to deal with these troublemakers.

First things first, though, you needed to try and single out their ringleader. After all, most gangs like these were only held together by the loosest of associations. The elimination of their leader should send them all scattering.

Then again, you were in pretty antsy mood right now. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to let off some steam.

You scan the ruffians and spot what you assume to be the leader. He towered over the others and looked to be some sort of bull, judging from the two long horns protruding from his head. Well, you found your target.

You take the offensive and charge forward. Two of the thugs move in to try and intercept you. However, you stiff arm one of them and shoulder check the other, sending them both reeling to the sides and leaving a clear path the ringleader.

Of course, the bull man wasn't going to just stand back and let you charge him. You see him lower his head and charge you as well, the twin horns gleaming in Luna's light.

You leap straight up into the air, perfectly timing it so that you avoid the bull man's charge and land right on top of his back. Realizing what's happening, the bull man tries to shake you off, but you grab hold of his two prominent horns. You're impressed he can move this much considering how much you and your armor weight, speaking a great deal of the strength his kind possessed.

Meanwhile, the rest of the ruffians form a circle, but don't come any closer. Whether it was fear of you, or for their leader's frantic movements, you weren't sure, but you were glad for the temporary reprieve.

With one hand still holding on to a horn for stability you raise your other hand, ball it into a fist, and slam it down directly on top of the bull man' skull so hard that there's a loud CRACK as the horn your holding literally snaps off from the opposing forces.

The bull man only gives a pained groan before collapsing to the ground in an unconscious heap, leaving you standing their with one of his horns in your hand.

There's a brief, awkward pause as everybody tries to process what just happened.

"Let's get out of here!" Someone yells and panic gives way to a full rout as the ruffians scatter in all directions.

Well, you suppose you plan to take out the bull man was a success, but perhaps it worked TOO well. At this rate you wouldn't be able to beat up anyone else.

"That was an interesting fight you had there." Morgan says simply.

You look to see her perched in a tree, her eyes giving off a slight glow as they reflected Luna's light. Had she been watching this whole time...?

You just shrug. After what you both had gone through, a couple of street thugs was honestly no issue for you.

"So I'm guess you came out here looking for me, huh?" Morgan sighs.

You nod.

"Can we... can we take a walk?" Morgan asks. "I'm just feeling antsy to just sit around..."

You nod and start walking alongside Morgan as she picks a seemingly random path through the trees and rocks.

"It's kinda funny, you know?" Morgan mutters, her ears twitching. "I came with you here partly to see if it was a place I could belong to... and it's not different from before."

You pause for a brief second. What was she talking about? Wasn't she among her people now?

"Guess it has to be some sick joke." Morgan chuckles bitterly. "I'm still as much a freak here as I was back home."

You simply headpat Morgan to calm her down.

"You are not a freak." You tell her. "You are special."

Morgan pauses as her ears go straight up and she turns to you in shock and surprise.

"Did you just...?"

You just shrug in response. You knew very well that she heard what you said.

"W-well, thanks. It means a lot hearing you say that." Morgan stammers as she reaches her arm out and holds your hand. "Thank you."

You just nod and give her a thumbs up. She should stay positive about these things, after all. If things went well, she wouldn't have to worry about any of that.

"...let's go back." Morgan finally decides after a few more minutes of walking in the alpine woods. "But, I do have a little request..."

You turn to look at her.

"You think I can ride you on the way back?" She asks bashfully.

So she WAS watching...
