You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

As you launch, you take another look at your sensor screen. Just a few hundred klicks away, you could see a dense furball of Valkyries and Zentradi fighters tangling with each others, lasers and missiles flying in all directions. Even the Quarter was getting into the fight, contributing with her heavy laser cannons and anti-aircraft weaponry.

Also, additional squadrons of Valkyries scrambled from the Pacifica were inbound, ready to provide support.

In comparison, you, Lara, and the single squadron of Ghost drones slaved to your fighters seemed paltry in comparison, but you were after less numerically superior prey.

Lurking somewhere in this asteroid field was the Zentradi Red Ace. That one battlesuit that had been giving you so much trouble in the past couple of engagements. You weren't sure if it was just coincidence or some sort of calculated plan, but you were running into her more and more, it seemed like.

"Damn, that's a lot of cover she could be using to hide out there." Lara grimaces. "Maybe we should spread the formation out?"

Well, there was some merit to that. Spreading the Ghosts out would increase their sensor coverage and overall search area. However, that meant giving the Red Ace an opportunity to pick a few of them off before you could lock in her position.

>You can afford to lose a few drones. Spread the formation out.

So for our plane's pinup girl, I think it should be lenticular or holographic so that viewing it on one angle would show Dorodoro in a modest outfit, and full of authority....until you look at her at another angle, it'll then be of her winking or doing some cutesy idol pose (or her wearing an even lewder outfit/clothing damage).

"Keep them close." You instruct. "This is the only squadron we've got, so we can't afford to throw them away, even if they're drones."

"Got it." Lara complies as the Ghosts stick close to your sides.

However, even as you fly in the midst of the asteroids, the Ace refuses to show herself. You suspect she's smart enough to know she doesn't stand a chance if she exposes herself to you. Even with her speed, she wouldn't be able to outmaneuver an entire squadron of Ghosts.

Meanwhile, the main battle in the distance continues to escalate as the Pacifica's fighters dive into the fray. Surrounded on all sides, the Zentradi position gets more precarious and desperate, causing them to fight all the much harder. In fact, many of them are even resort to suicide attacks on the Quarter, mercilessly charging through defensive fire from both the CAP flights and AA emplacements.

That's when you remember that Dorothea is also aboard the ship, and you'd be lying if you weren't more than little worried about her safety.

And then, your comms begin to hum as you hear a familiar voice. It sounded like...

It's Amy's familiar voice as her main song fills all of the comm channels. Almost immediately, the Zentradi suicide charge against the Quarter falters as the uncultured Zentradi are caught off guard, leaving them easy pickings for the NUNS and SMS pilots who pounce on them mercilessly.

However, you sensors then scream as a red flash bursts from the asteroids, making a beeline directly for the Pacifica.

"Shit!" You grunt as you swing your Valkyrie around and hit full throttle, as fast as your fighter would allow. "Pacifica, you've got incoming form heading 4-6!"

"We see it, Yellow Team. Engaging."

And just like that, the Pacifica lights up as hundreds of AA guns open fire, spitting lasers, tracers, and missiles into space at the approaching red bullet.

"Shit!" Lara curses as a stray laser beam passes a bit too close for comfort. "It's starting to get a bit hot in here!"

True, as the Pacifica's guns had opened up, it was posing just as much danger for you as the Red Ace...

"No choice, Lara." You grunt as you keep your throttle pushed forward. "We can't let her get to the ship."

"Ha! Always picking the more exciting option!" Lara laughs as her engines and FAST pack boosters flare, keeping track with you.

The Ghosts, not shackled to having to worry about a human pilot, also boost forward at barely manageable speeds. Just a few more seconds and that Ace will be in weapons range...

You slave the Ghosts to your fire control and lock on to the Ace. From your position behind her, it's simple getting a lock since she continues to make a beeline for the Pacifica, only making the bare minimum maneuvers to dodge the incoming AA fire from the ship.

Dozens of missiles streak out from both your Valkyrie and the gathered Ghosts, the white contrails marking their path as the zoom towards the distant Zentradi ace.

The Ace, for her part, is immediately aware of the incoming missiles and spins around, flying backwards while firing her arm mounted cannons and dumping flares and chaff. Missile after missile explodes in a chain of orange bursts, but with the mass of AA fire concentrated on her, she couldn't possibly dodge it all, and she doesn't.

A burst of AA gunfire rakes across the back of the Ace's battlesuit, shredding up its backpack unit, forcing her to eject the damaged equipment.

Having bitten off more than she could chew, the Red Ace immediately jukes, changing direction and flying away from the Pacifica, thankfully.

However, she was diving back into the asteroid field, no doubt to try and slip away again. AA fire continues to track her, but its less accurate now as she gains distance from the ship.

If you were quick enough, you could try to cut her off and engage her in a close in fight. Or, with her suit damaged, you could hang back and try to snipe her with the heavy particle laser cannon mounted on your FAST pack.

It wasn't even dogfight. More of a turkey shoot, honestly. Your flight expends the last of its missiles, unleashing them all against the fleeing Red Ace.

The Red Ace attempts to spin around to intercept the missiles again, but a wayward micrometeor whizzes by and smashes right into the battlesuit's head, causing the Red Ace to flinch.

And that's all the missiles need as they converge. The Red Ace is able to regain composure and begins firing and maneuvering again, but it's too late. The missiles are too many and too close for her to be able to get them all. In a bid of desperation, the Red Ace flips back around, engines charging for one final burst of speed, but just as the engines engage, one missile slips in and slams into the back of the Red Ace's battlesuit.

The Zentradi pilot loses all control as she weaves and loops in unpredictable patterns. You briefly lose sight for second of the Red Ace as it arcs around a large asteroid but the Ghosts are quick, flying forward to relay visual data to you from a higher angle.

And you manage a catch sight of the explosion right as the Red Ace impacts another asteroid, her battlesuit exploding brilliantly and sending debris flying in all directions.

"Hah! Scratch one Zeddie Ace!" Lara whoops. "Good kill, Cap!"

"I dunno, it could've been anybody's missiles there." You shrug.

"Aw, get the fuck outta here, Cap!" Lara groans. "Don't go handing off a perfectly good kill like that!"

"But-"

"I'll paint the goddamn kill marker on your Valkyrie myself!" Lara continues. "So you TAKE this victory and you OWN it, you got that?"

"Y-yes ma'am." You squeak.

Good thing only the Ghosts could hear what was being said. They still hung around, obediently waiting for orders.

"Captain." Dorothea's voice comes on line again. "The Zentradi are retreating and they're heading your way. You have at least three squadrons worth of units bearing down. You need to get out of there."

"Just a second." You frown as you glance at the smoking ruin of the red battlesuit. "Something doesn't feel right here."

"Thanks, Lara." You respond. "I promise I'll be quick."

"Heh, you better be, because I'm not saving any kills for ya!" Lara chortles as she boosts off, the Ghosts following close behind.

And that leaves you completely alone. Well, maybe alone. That's what you were going to find out. You switch to GERWALK mode and boost carefully towards the blackened crater where the Red Ace's battlesuit impacted. You'll start from there, you suppose.

Your Valkyrie touches down on the surface of the asteroid, right on the lip of the crater. you point the nose of your craft right at the crater to allow your sensors to get a good view of it and wait a few seconds as the advanced instruments do their work.

Finally, the results come back, reading a negative for any traces of Zentradi biological material, which confirmed your fears. Apparently, for the brief second that you lost sight of the Red Ace, she had manged to eject from her suit without detection.

You sweep your Valkyrie around, trying to to see if you could find any sort of trace on her. You knew that Zentradi could survive short periods of time in pure vacuum, and she was likely wearing a environment suit anyways. Unfortunately, the asteroid field provided too much cover for you to get an accurate read of where she might've gone.

Before you could proceed, though, you're interrupted as a Ghost shrieks overhead, wreathed in flame as it nosedives into an asteroid. A Zentradi battlepod flies by, chased by another Ghost.

Shit, looks like the battle already migrated here. You couldn't continue the search in these conditions.

You decide it wasn't worth staying here, especially since you had expended pretty much all of your missiles chasing the Red Ace. You leap off the asteroid and switch back to fighter mode.

"Lara, let's fall back." You tell her. "No sense risking our lives fighting for this place. We'll let the others mop them up."

"All riiiiiight." Lara says reluctantly. No doubt she wanted to further pad her kill count. "I guess four is good enough."

Yep, she definitely wanted to pad her kill count.

You, Lara, and the remaining eight Ghosts disengage while the remnants of the Zentradi force continue to retreat, having no wish to chase you. Already, SMS forces were swooping in to finish them off, while the NUNS planes were returning to the Pacifica as well. Amy's song also fades away as the battle winds down, the need for her skills slowly dwindling away.

You take your leave, moving to cut off Dorothea before she could exit the hangar.

"The very same." Dorothea nods. "He's certainly moved up the company ladder in the past few years. Up from his own squadron to his own ship."

"Huh." You pause. "How's he taking it?"

Dorothea gives you a smug grin as the lift door opens. She steps in and quickly motions for you to follow inside. As the doors slide closed and the lift starts moving, Dorothea puts a hand up to her mouth as she starts giggling uncontrollably.

"Oh, he absolutely HATES it!" Dorothea snickers. "It's very clear he'd like nothing more than stay in a Valkyrie cockpit until he's buried in it!"

"To be honest, I totally understand how he feels." You sigh. "I can't really picture myself commanding a capital ship like this."

"As well you shouldn't." Dorothea chuckles. "I suppose SMS treats their promotion structure differently."

"I hope you didn't tease him too much about it." You frown.

"Of course not. I'm always professional when I deal with others." Dorothea smiles as she crosses her arms. "Besides, teasing is only reserved for those who have lower rank than you."

"Bet they really taught you a lot about that in your academy." You roll your eyes.

"Of course." Dorothea nods.

However, at that moment, the lift reaches its destination and the doors slide open. When that happens, Dorothea immediately returns to her prim and proper facade, uncrossing her arms and standing straight.

You follow Dorothea into the bridge, where you could see the rest of the bridge crew working dutifully at their consoles. Further down, you could see the stage where Amy usually performed. In fact, you could see she was still there, sitting on the edge and apparently taking a break. She had been singing for a while, after all.

You leave Dorothea to coordinate things with her bridge crew while you head over to the stage. Amy takes a deep swig from her water bottle as you sit down next to her.

"Hey, good job with the music." You grin as you ruffle her hair. You half regret it considering how sweaty it was.

"Yeah, well, I'm starting to get the hang of it now." Amy laughs as she bats your hand away. "And after meeting Rin... I guess you can say I'm a bit jealous of her now."

"Oh?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Ah well..." Amy blushes a bit. "It's just that, whenever I'm around her, she just seems so... sure of what she wants. It's as if she's, well, already got everything planned ahead and she knows how to get to where she's going. I wish I could be like that."

"Oh?" You grin as you ruffle Amy's sweaty hair again. "Is our little Amy finally growing up?"

"No way!" Amy grunts as she bats your hand away and pouts. "If growing up means being more like you or the Admiral, then I'd prefer to stay a kid forever!"

"Well, that's fine by me, too!" You laugh.

"Also, well..." Amy pauses as she looks at you. "I saw what went down between you and that Ace, and.... well... I'm glad you came out on top this time. That's the last we'll see of her, right?"

"Well, that Ace might still be out there." You warn her. "I mean, I took down the suit, but I'm pretty sure she managed to eject and give us the slip."

"Well, then I guess you can shoot her down again when you meet her." Amy shrugs and then sighs, leaning her head against your shoulder. "You know, I've sorta been thinking, about the concert..."

"Yeah?" You look to her.

"You think me and Rin could do it together?" She asks.

"Where'd this come from all of a sudden?" You blink.

"Well..." Amy goes quiet for a second, as if trying to gather her thoughts. "She seems like such a better idol than me, so, maybe the whole concert thing would be better if she were in it, too."

"Are you okay with her stealing your thunder?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well yea- no." Amy grumbles. "But she seems so much better at this idol thing than I am and I just want this damn concert to run smooth..."

"Well, that means you care about your audience, which says a lot about you." You nod as you wrap an arm around Amy in a one armed hug. "But it's YOUR concert. It's YOUR time to shine."

"I guess you got a point there." Amy agrees, though somewhat reluctantly. "Speaking of the concert, I've been practicing and everything for it, but most of the song list is all that pop shit Karla likes makin' me do..."

"And you want some of your... own music in there?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Jeez, thanks for the vote of confidence." Amy rolls her eyes. "Still, thanks."

"It's what I do." You nod.

"Anyways, I think after the concert, I won't be doing a lot." Amy mumbles. "So, uh, would you want to like... do something after?"

"For flyboys like you, probably." Amy shrugs and then checks her watch. "Ah shit, it's already this late...?"

You check your own watch, too and pause. She was right, that battle seemed to have gone on much longer than you remember. No wonder why you were feeling so fatigued.

"Admiral." You say as you walk up to her. "Do you have a moment?"

"Of course." Dorothea turns away from Anna to face you. "What is it?"

You lean in a bit closer to her so nobody can overhear and ask.

"So, you mind if we take a break together?"

"Tea does sound nice." Dorothea nods.

"Well, uh, considering the hour, you think we can grab some sleep? Your quarters are way closer than mine."

"Hm? You mean-" Dorothea locks up when her mind finally catches up to what you're saying, and her face goes as red as her hair.

"Um, Admiral...?" You blink, now a bit worried.

And that's when the Admiral literally swoons. Thankfully you're close enough to catch her, but now you're left holding an unconscious Admiral in the middle of the bridge. Right in front of the entire bridge crew and Amy, who's just staring agape.

Shit, there had to be some way to explain this. You just had to think, THINK.

"It's been an exhausting day, and I think the Admiral's been running on fumes." You say quickly. "I'm going to take her back to her quarters."

Anna, Lida, and Rachel look at each other uncertainly, by they of all people knew how prone Dorothea was to overworking herself. That personal knowledge of Dorothea was going to work in your favor.

Amy, however, was far less convinced, but she didn't seem to be in the mood to make an issue out of it, as she just shrugs and walks out of the bridge, first.

"Um, well, if you excuse me..." You say as you sweep Dorothea up in a princess carry so you could more efficiently carry her out. "Let's uh, not mention this to anybody else, okay? I'm sure you all don't want to her the Admiral's image."

The bridge crew just nods, and no longer wanting to dally, you quickly make your escape, Dorothea still secure in your arms.

All the while, you heart was pounding faster and harder than it ever did when your life was on the lien against the Red Ace.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week, and don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday!
