You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

"So." Atlanta stands before you, arms crossed and tail swishing back and forth in annoyance. "I heard there was an altercation last night."

You just shrug as you help load up one of the enchanted caravan wagons. It was a new day and Elias was planning on using the fresh daylight to head out to study the dying weirwoods. Of course, everybody was participating, though some more than others.

"Don't play dumb with me." Atalanta sighs. "I appreciate you assisting with those Elves, but I can't just let outsiders running around assaulting our people!"

"Ah, it's probably just a bunch of pranksters again, Atty!" Janice laughs as she hugs the cat archer from behind. "The Templar here wouldn't assault anybody without a good reason! Isn't that right?"

You just nod and take out the bull horn you had "acquired" last night from one of your attackers. Atalanta's eyes goes wide.

"What the- So it WAS you!" She groans.

You just shrug. It was all in self defense, and you point to Morgan. She was a witness who would vouch for you.

"W-what?!" Morgan gasps. "Don't drag me into this!"

"Uh oh, are you gonna go to jail?" Nino yelps. "If you do I'll blow it up!"

"I just- uggggh." Atalanta sighs in defeat. "Just... just at least give me the horn so I can return it? Hopefully that will convince them to stop complaining about it."

Well... you suppose it's a small thing to ask. Turning the broken horn over in your hands, you casually hand it back to Atalanta, but you mime a breaking motion as she takes it, warning that if that one particular bull man messed with you again, you'd be taking his other horn.

"I'll... be sure to relay that." Atalanta frowns and turns to Janice. "Seriously, how do deal with this guy?"

"Oh, he's just a bigger and meaner version of Artya!" Janice chuckles.

"I didn't think that was possible." Atalanta groans as her ears droop.

Artya mean while perks up and glares at Janice and Atalanta from behind her fox mask, eliciting more laughter from Janice.

"Anyways, the ride out to the affected area is barely more than half a day's ride." Atalanta explains as she points towards the forest. "Doesn't look like those Elves are too interested in that section of the forest, so I don't expect much trouble that way. I can accompany you there, though, if you want."

"Of course!" Janice chuckles. "You're always such a worrywart!"

"Because you always give me things to worry about!" Atlanta groans as she leaps away with her catlike agility.

"Ha! Well, let's get going then!" Janice grins. "I'll take the lead! Where are you going to be?"

You decide to stick with Elias. In your experience, it was always the Mages that attracted the most trouble... or caused it. Sure, the Twins were also around, but, well, you were not one to trust matters to others so easily.

Immediately with you were Valentia and Nino, who had also opted to stay behind to protect the wagon itself while the others had taken a loose perimeter. The site wasn't too far off, anyways.

Valentia was in the middle of some sort of prayer, Nino was furiously leafing through one of her smuggled books, and the Twins were bickering over... something. Elias meanwhile looked very calm and collected. No doubt getting ready for another day of discovery, or something.

You shuffle over next to Valentia, who pauses her prayer to look at you.

"Oh, hey Templar." She nods to you. "Is something the matter?"

You just shrug and point to her shoulder, where she had been bitten by the Arjatar.

"Oh, that? It's fine now. Well, mostly fine." Valentia gives a slight smile. "Naru says pretty much all of the venom is out of my system now and I'm starting to feel a lot better now."

You nod. That was a good sign. You then point to the Sol icon hanging from her neck. No doubt given to her by one of her parents.

"You want to know if I miss home?" Valentia leans back and cranes her head upwards, staring at the roof of the wagon. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. And it's not just because I might not come back. With all that's going on in the city... what if we come back to find nothing left?"

Hm, that was a legitimate worry, you had to admit.

"You Templars are always on the move, aren't you?" Valentia asks. "Do you guys well... do you even get homesick or anything like that?"

You nod. Even you Templars had to have somewhere to base yourselves from. Despite all the stories and all the things the Order wanted outsiders to believe, you were all still ultimately people.

"Huh." Valentia's eyes widen. "I didn't realize that was a thing for Templars."

You just pat Valentia on the shoulder in encouragement as the wagon comes to a stop.

"We're here." Elias announces as he stands up and exits the wagon.

"W-wait for us!" Caroline yelps as she and her sister tumble out after him.

"C'mon!" Nino says as she grabs your arm and tries to pull you out of the wagon.

And outside, all you see is... desolation.

Unlike the lush forests you had seen when you first entered the Valley, the trees here were grey and shriveled. Almost as if they were petrified.

In addition, the area was deathly quiet, as if the life had been sucked completely out of this place.

"Interesting." Elias' eyes glow bright at the visage. "This is completely different from the previous area. Let us begin to collect samples."

"Well, it looks like we're going to be here all day..." Valentia sighs as she looks around. "It looks like not even Sol's light can bring life to this place."

You nod grimly.

Being as cautious as ever. you take out your halberd and start pacing around the immediate area. Morgan and the others were farther out, meaning you were Elias' only immediate defense if something managed to slip past them.

As Elias begins collecting samples and planting down wards, you keep a close eye on the surroundings...

And that's when the ground rumbles. You, Valentia, and Nino immediately go on alert as one of the dead trees, a particularly large one, beings to move.

"Wait!" Nino gasps. "That's not a weirwood!"

And just as she says that, the white and dead exterior cracks and dissolves away to show fresh and living wood. A massive, animated tree.

A treant. One of the Elves' most fearsome weapons. Essentially a giant, living tree typically used as a massive siege engine by the Elves. The Elven equivalent of a golem, you suppose.

"What in Sol's name is a treant doing here?!" Valentia gasps, immediately raising her shield.

"Would you please deal with that?" Elias says nonchalantly, unphased from his experiments as the Twins plant a magical shield over him. "The infernal noise it's making is making it difficult for me to concentrate."

Mages.

"Go get 'em, Templar!" Caroline yells.

"I am confident in your success." Justine adds.

"I don't suppose you have a clever plan for this?" Valentia asks.

You just shrug and wave your halberd around. Just hit it until it stops moving, you suppose.

"Great..." Valentia groans.

You look to Valentia and motion with your head towards Nino, telling her to focus on protecting the little mage.

"Got it." Valentia nods as she sidesteps to interpose herself between the treant and Nino.

Nino, meanwhile, needs no prompting and begins muttering under her breath to prepare a spell. Hopefully not a fire one since with all this dead wood everywhere, a massive conflagration could start.

Unfortunately, the treat also seems to recognize that Nino is the bigger threat and turns and lumbers toward her. Valentia prepares her defense.

Realizing the danger they were in, you rush forward and swing your halberd, slamming the blunt end directly into one of the treant's large legs. Bark crunches and cracks under the blow, splintering off pieces of wood. The treant waves one of its massive branch arms and catches you in the swing, knocking you back and sending you tumbling and spinning across the dry dirt before crashing into the dried husk of a weirwood tree, the dead trunk shattering like glass.

Valentia charges forward with a roar, slamming her glowing shield against the treant's front leg. There's an explosion of golden light, sending the treant reeling and stumbling backwards and away from Nino, who was still trying to get her spell ready.

You scramble back to your feet, your vision blurred and spinning from the hit, but you were still able to fight. You tighten the grip on your halberd as you try to look for an opening.

You score a solid hit on the treant, but don't appear to cause any noticeable damage. Angered, the living tree does another wide sweeping attack with its branch arms, knocking not only you, but Valentia away as well, sending you both tumbling and skidding across the dry earth.

Nino attempts to cast her spell, but she never finishes. The treant reaches down and snatches up Nino in its massive hand.

"Ahhh!" Nino shrieks. Her Fortress Shroud automatically activates, preventing her from being crushed, but she was now trapped in the mighty tree's clutches.

And then the massive creature begins to turn away. Was it just satisfied with capturing Nino?

Either way, as you watched the little mage struggle in the treant's grasp, you scowled as you got back up to your feet. You couldn't afford to let this thing get away.

Unfortunately, the treant seems to catch on to what you're trying to do, and raises its branch arms higher, putting Nino out of your reach. Wondering how you can free her, you see Valentia running up to you at full sprint. She drops her shield, leaving herself with only her sword in a two handed grip.

"Boost me!" She yells.

You immediately understand what she's getting at. You spin around, drop your halberd, kneel down, and clasp your hands together. Valentia continues her forward movement, and the moment her foot comes down on your clasped hands, you LIFT with all your strength.

Valentia is launched into the air like a catapult, gaining more than enough height to strike at the branches holding Nino in place. Valentia gives a mighty battle cry as she swings her sword downwards, the blade glowing golden hot.

The sword slices through the branches like air, causing the wood to instantly combust on contact, and Nino falls. Fortunately, you're already in a position to catch her, and the moment she's in your arms you immediately begin running away to get distance between her and the treant.

"Let me blast him!" Nino whines, her face red with fury and electric sparks flying from her hair.

"EAT THIIIIIIS!" Nino yells as she raises her arm in the air. And in the palm of her hand, a massive lance of ice begins to materialize. With one flick of her wrist, the icy lance shoots forward, spearing straight through the treant.

However, where the ice lance impacted, you could see the ice expanding rapidly, rippling across the treant's wooden skin until it covered the entire creature, locking it in place under a layer of magically produced ice. The resulting ice block was so large it began to chill the air around it.

"Fascinating." Elias observes. "Nino's magic seems to be developing at a rapid pace."

"You're supposed to be studying the trees, not Nino!" Caroline grunts as she jabs her foot into Elias' shin.

"Right, right." Elias grunts as he returns to his work.

At that moment, the rest of your party bursts through the trees, ready for a fight.

"Is every all ri-" Morgan skids to a stop when she sees the frozen treant. "Whoa."

"Of fucking curse." Naru spits.

"We missed the fun!" Niko groans.

"...a living tree?" Janice gasps.

"More Elven interference." Valentia grunts. "But it's handled."

"Not yet!" Nino butts into the conversation. "I just froze it! The ice isn't gonna last forever, so you all either gotta take it out when the ice melts or..."

"I'm totally going to no like what you're going to suggest, aren't I?" Naru groans.

"Or we can drain all its mana!" Nino finishes. "Treants aren't all that much different from elemental constructs! They need mana to function, and I can transfer it to all these trees, right?"

>No chances, you have to destroy the treant.

As Nino keeps her hand pressed to the ice, she closes her eyes in concentration and begins to glow a soft blue as she fills up with mana. All around her in a small radius, the weirwood trees begin to return to life.

"My god...." Janice gasps as Nino finally stops, collapsing to her knees in exhaustion.

"O-okay, that should do it." Nino sighs. "There actually wasn't as much mana in that treant as I was expecting, so I could only bring a few trees back."

"And the treant?" Naru grumbles, still eying the creature as if it was going to come alive and wreak havok.

"Dormant." Nino sighs as she leans against you, tired. "I took all of its mana and directed it into the ground."

"So, is that it? Mission accomplished?" Janice wonders. "Was that big tree thing the behind all this mana starvation?

"Unfortunately, I don't think that treant was taking mana from the trees." Nino shakes her head.. It was as bad off as the others, slowly starving."

"I can corroborate that." Elias says as he walks up. I've discovered that the weirwoods are dying simply due to the lack of mana. The topsoil is completely barren of mana,"

"Then what was the treant here for?" Niko wonders.

"Probalby just a trap, or scout, or both." Morgan scowls.

"Perhaps we should head back to the village?" Janice suggests. "Those Elves might come back...

You just shrug and point to the ground you're standing on. You were here to study what was going on, or at least Elias was, and you weren't leaving until he was well and truly done. You'd all just have to be doubly vigilant for any potential Elven ambushes, as it was clear they were up to no good in the Valley.

And with that, everybody goes about their tasks, with some preparing the camping gear while the rest went on patrol.

You decide to stick behind to help setup the camp. Already, Naru has gone about preparing lunch for everybody. The Twins were setting up wards along the perimeter. This seemed like a good opportunity to talk to Nino on her own as she hovers around the frozen treant, hand up to her chin as she's presumably making all sorts of calculations in her head.

"Oh, hey!" Nino waves at you as you approach. "You mind helping me break away some of this ice? I want to see how the Elves slipped a treant all the way out here and I hope by tapping its natural mana circuits, I can find some answers!"

You use your halberd to smash a section of ice, exposing a section of wood that allows Nino to press her hands against it. She closes her eyes and starts channeling a spell into it, and blue runes start to run across the dormant treant's body.

"Ha.... I think I understand a little more on how these things work!" Nino says happily, her eyes glowing. "It's actually surprisingly basic. I should be able to find a better way to counter these things if we ever run into them again in the future!"

You nod and give a thumbs up.

"And... I think I figured out something else." Nino frowns. "The mana in this treant... it's not a match for the mana the other weirwood trees in this area were using. Whatever it was doing here, it wasn't sapping mana away from the weirwoods."

Hm, now that was interesting. If it wasn't the Elves causing this desolation, then what was...?
