You open your eyes, and you curse softly as you discover that you fell asleep in your costume again.

The dimly-lit, hollow loneliness of your office greeting you as you rise from a sleep so light and insignificant it felt as if you never slept at all. That you only merely blinked.

You would have cared, some time ago. You'd have been incensed at yourself for being so lazy. Being so careless. Being so lax with your appearance and how people saw you. At how awful of an example you're setting for your juniors and peers.

"Warmaster."

But not right now.

Not with so many things to do.

"Warmaster?"

Not with everything going to shit, and nearly two thousand magical girls looking to you for guidance. For safety. For leadership.

You let out a sigh before pressing the heels of your gloved hands into your eyes, trying to rub the sleep out of them.

"Warmaster, I apologize if this is a bad time, but it's very urgent."

If only things didn't happen the way they did.

If only she didn't screw things up.

If only she took you WITH her when she left, then maybe...

"Warmaster, please, the Incubator is--"

How do you respond?

[]"I told you. It's 'Acting' Warmaster."
[]"Let him wait. I'll be out in a little while."
[]Stay silent and wait for her to get the hint. You're not in the mood.

"Karasawa, for the last fucking time." You loudly admonish the person beyond your office door. "It's 'Acting' Warmaster. Acting. ACTING. Do I have to have it engraved into a plaque and hammered onto the door? How many times do I have to remind you?"

Silence, an uneasy one. Before the Callidus Rank Leader replies, somewhat petulantly: "But the Incubator said--"

"I know what he said, Karasawa. I was there." You let out the breath you'd been holding, the breath that would have fueled another yelled lecture through your office door. "But until I say otherwise, address me as Acting Warmaster. Tell the others to do the same."

Silence, again.

"...Very well, Acting Warmaster. I hear and obey."

"Thank you. Now, what the hell does Kyuubey want?"

Hesitation, before a curse murmured underneath a breath. "Ah, just...he'd like you to meet him in his office as soon as possible, that's all. I believe the...First Warmaster is awaiting your pleasure."

Great. Just what you needed. Another meeting with Miss Perfect. Another chance for her to sneer at you while you clamp down the unexplicable, uncontrollable rage you feel each time you set eyes on her.

Another round of veiled threats, backhanded insults, and blatant interrogation.

"Tell Kyuubey I'll be right there." You reply curtly, quickly. "I just need to finish things up here."

"Very well, Warmaster."

"Acting--"

"Yes, yes. Acting Warmaster." Then, silence. Footsteps, receding as their owner struts hurriedly down the corridor.

You let out another sigh.

Because you promised Kyoko.

You promised her you wouldn't believe the news reports, or Kyuubey's own stilted words in his mass debriefing a few weeks after...the incident.

You promised her you wouldn't breathe the same foul rumors everyone was hissing in the Ninth Officio's halls.

That Chiaki Matsuda, Warmaster of the Ninth Officio, had done something infinitely worse than turning into the benighted, eldritch monstrosity that magical girls turned to if they weren't careful.

She didn't witch out. Worse than that.

Betrayal. Attempted murder of the First Warmaster. Unprovoked. Unguarded. Summoned there only for a cordial meeting.

Grievous, but not critical injuries to the First. Maintenance personnel deaths in the dozens. Half the Lunar Base devastated. The Ninth will be picking up the bill for sure.

But worst of all, even more heinous than that, she--

You grit your teeth and close your eyes, blocking out the thought. Killing it before you could finish it.

Not now. Just not now. Anything but that.

You forced yourself to be there at her funeral just so you could stop dwelling on it long enough to be functional, for fuck's sake.

You blearily run your gloved hands across your eyes. Once, twice. Erading any trace of tears that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

You're fine. Everything is fine.

And now you have a meeting to attend.

You stand up from the seat that isn't yours, move around the office that you're borrowing, and glare at the Warmaster cap and greatcoat that you have no business wearing.

A new set. Freshly made. Not hers. Not Murderface's.

It doesn't even have an emblem yet.

What do you do?

You could just take the ebook and print it. It's a shame that you miss a lot of the best replies that way.

In other order or things, assuming Chiaki isn't dead she's probably acting independently at this point. Prophecies, friends and enemies changing into each other, etc.

You blink once, then twice at the Warmaster cap and greatcoat, both hanging from the rack beside the door leading out of your office.

The symbols of office of a Warmaster - well, if you were really honest, just A symbol. The greatcoat wasn't that important, it simply completed the look. The cap was everything, however. Without it you were just a dildo with an oversized black coat hanging from your shoulders.

After what seems like an eternity, you reach out with your gloved hands and take the greatcoat and cap off their hooks. Your own white cape billowing out briefly before taking it self out of reality with a snap.

This wasn't supposed to happen like this, you find yourself thinking miserably as you shrugged the greatcoat on, the stiff material itchy and uncomfortable on your bare shoulders.

It should have been grander. Or at the very least, a lot less depressing.

Yes, you dreamed about being Warmaster. That was your plan after all, wasn't it? Fighting tooth and nail and then some just to get to Rank Leader. Then, after Kirika or Mami got Warmaster, you'd let them enjoy it for a year or so before formally challenging them for the position. You were absolutely, one-hundred-percent sure that it would be one or the other.

Until she came along. Until she got the job.

She made you Equerry, and Kyoko an aide. You weren't expecting that. You certainly weren't in any mood to even think of the possibility then - you had been all but fuming at the mouth that she got it. The one person who couldn't be more unqualified for the role.

But she did that, in a rare streak of...well, you'd hesitate to call it brilliance. More like consideration, really. Or common sense.

And you thought you could live with it. Hell, you actually did. And for a while you thought it was all going to work out.

But now...

You let your thought go unfinished as you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, Warmaster cap in hand. Your blue hair's straight, immaculate, brushed. Your fortissimo hairpin gleaming, polished. You look like you've just gotten out of the shower, instead of having spent the last week barely managing to get any sleep.

Well, except for the dark rings around your eyes, anyway.

"Kaneda-san, why did you have to go?" You hear yourself murmuring. "What do I do?"

Like you always do behind closed doors, when you're completely at a loss.

Almost like praying in desperate futility.

You look at yourself for a moment longer, before smoothing down your hair with one gloved hand and then pulling on the cap with the other. Carefully lowering the brim around your head, inch by inch, to ensure a symmetric fit all around.

And then you feel it. Someone behind you, just beyond your periphery. Someone wearing a pink ribbon.

...

[]Turn around, see who it is.
[]"Get the fuck out of my office."

True, that'd be fun.

One flaw with taking the whole quest in one go is that when you've read all the way you can tell the "making the plot as we go along" beginning part and all the little ret-cons. It takes a while until the story gets some depth and the shadowruns begin in full.

You turn around, slowly. Knowing full well that despite your own honed instincts screaming at you that someone is indeed behind you - you didn't hear the door open. You didn't feel anyone enter your office. And it's impossible that they could have snuck in while you were asleep - you're a light sleeper as it is. Anyone even attempting to, even the shrewdest and most skilled Callidus - would have had a hard time trying to get in. Not with you in this kind of mental state.

No one should be there, is what you're getting at. There should be no one in this office but you.

You turn around and look.

...

No one. Just like you said. Just like you knew.

But...

You step forward and lean down briefly to pick something up off the polished marble floor.

A length of pink silk ribbon. Just enough to tie a decent ponytail off.

What? Who...? Murderface wore her hair in a ponytail for a while, sure, but she never used a pink ribbon. She usually just used a rubber band, or that fancy black tie Mami gave her.

You look around briefly, then up at the ceiling. Trying to figure out where this mysterious ribbon could have fallen from, or something.

Nothing. Not even a hint of pink anywhere. Just the ribbon. And you know Murderface never got into the whole vanity thing either, so there's no reason for her to keep spares like this lying around.

...Oddly, you feel somewhat a bit more relaxed while holding it. It's not overt, but you certainly feel a bit calmer with it in your hands.

What do you do?

[]Leave the ribbon here.

You decide to keep it with you for now. You can ask Kyuubey about it later, after the meeting. If even he doesn't know anything about it, you can just put it back in your office where you found it, and that'd be that.

Just as you make to put it in your inventory, though, something stops you. You're not quite sure what it is, but...just holding it in your hand, seeing its bright and cheerful color, it's...it feels like something from a memory. One you've forgotten all this time. A pleasant one, a memory you'd probably give anything to remember again.

You look back down on the ribbon, and after a moment, decide to tie it around your wrist in a neat and tidy bracelet. Your hair's much too short for an impromptu ponytail, anyway, so you'll have to make do. And it's not too loud so as to attract too much attention - if anything, it's just a tasteful accent among the blues and whites of your costume. Oh, and the overpowering black of the greatcoat and cap, of course.

With that done, you leave your office - Murderface's office - and make for the Incubator's Inner Sanctum. Hitting your usual hurried stride with the first step you take, your greatcoat billowing out behind you where your cape originally would have. Ignoring the respectful bows and salutes coming your way, because you know it as well as they do that while it is standard protocol, it's not needed in your case.

However, you do find yourself stopping to correct whoever greets you with just 'Warmaster'.

Because you promised. And you're not going to let them forget.

No matter what Kyuubey had said. No matter what the First rammed down your throat and everyone else's.

You're just Acting Warmaster. The Warmaster post itself has not yet been vacated.

Murderface isn't dead. Not yet.

Kyoko believes she isn't, and that's good enough for you.

...

All told, it takes you the better part of ten minutes to get to Kyuubey's Inner Sanctum. You blithely ignore the empty desk by the entrance - the desk that Mami herself once manned, a couple of lifetimes ago - and let yourself into the pristine, all-white office that the Ninth Incubator called home.

And standing there, deep in a conversation with your Incubator, is none other than the Warmaster of the First. Hazuki Amane. Her long silver hair unbound, spreading outward like angel's wings.

Her right hand and arm encased in a monstrously oversized and brutal lightning claw, its bladed scythe-fingers bereft of killing lightning but still moving in deadly, articulated grace. Tiny servomotors growling and purring with every miniscule gesticulation as its owner used it, along with her bare hand, to gesture while conversing with your Incubator.

And it's here that she sees you. Sensing your arrival.

She smiles. A saintly smile. Polite. Beatific, even. Almost disarming.

You could have fallen in love with it yourself, just like many had. But all you feel is a white-hot rage that took you a considerable amount of self-restraint to keep back.

"Ah, Miss Sayaka! Good morning, we were just talking about you." She calls you and waves you over with her normal hand, her voice smooth and calming, relaxing. Similar to Mami's own warm, honeyed tones, but where the blonde inspired comfort and safety, Hazuki exuded a polite but determined confidence. Like...like she was the protagonist of some game, or something, and anything she said you could easily believe. And what's worse, she knew it. She knew how much of a big deal she was. "Right, Kyuubey?"

"Yes. Yes, of course." Your Incubator clears its tiny little throat - probably choking on the lies that the bitch had been feeding him. It's here that he blinks up at you as you approach. "...Have you been getting enough sleep, Miki Sayaka? You look like you've died and forgot to lie down."

How do you respond?

[]Play along. Smile grudgingly. "A few sleepless nights. I'll be fine."
[]Be curt. "Evidently not. Let's get this meeting started, shall we?"
[]Say nothing and let them start the meeting. You're in no mood for small talk.

Yes, but isn't it weird to actually show that concern in front of the 1st? He may have a soft spot for his MG, but I don't think it's ok to expose it that much. He must 'get on with the program' until he has that much of an upper hand to act as if he doesn't care what other incubators think of him. Even if he is insane, he's not stupid, either that or he has some grand keikaku.

You're usually pretty good with meetings. While it would take a singularly sadistic creature to actually enjoy the fruitless act of getting inside a room to share input and opinions that could easily be exchanged through email, or phone calls, or even through just a simple lunch - you didn't treat meetings with the same distaste that many in your rank did.

It was a vital and professional exchange of important and pertinent information, and you did your best to be...agreeable. You did your homework, you brought all the paperwork needed from you - and more often than not, for other people as well, when they invariably forgot - and you collaborated. You volunteered. You had the idea that since you all had to suffer a meeting together, the least you could do was to speed things up by playing along.

Now, though--

"Evidently not." You just barely avoid spitting this out, managing to get by with a curt monotone reply. Making you inwardly wince at how you sounded so much like...her. "Let's get this meeting started, shall we?"

Both Kyuubey and Hazuki blinks at that, before the former smiles again. "Ah, yes, of course. Well, this isn't really a formal meeting as such, just--"

"--Amane Hazuki simply wanted to ask about our progress with our assigned duties," Kyuubey cuts in, just before you could react. He must have seen you about to snap. "About our search for the missing materiel and the prime suspect."

You find yourself having quite a bit of difficulty reining in your already-strained patience and temper as you hear those words. Innocent-sounding terms to mask what this silver-haired bitch is really after, to the point that she's constantly holding these fucking meetings in the first place. Twice every week, without fail. Ever since the funeral.

Missing materiel. Prime Suspect.

Just say it outright, you fucking mutant cat, you find yourself thinking as you grit your teeth in inward frustration.

She wants to know where the Golden Weapons are.

And if you've found Mami's murderer yet.

How do you respond?

[]Be polite, and give her the update she wants. Anything to get this meeting done.
[]Be standoffish. You're trying to keep a grieving Officio together. This assignment is not your top priority at the moment.
[]Be evasive. Let Kyuubey answer it.

You decide to be evasive. Normally you'd have given her the update she wanted - and for the first couple of times that she'd called you into her personal audience, you did. Your wounds still fresh from everything that's happened thus far, it was still hard not to be bowled over by the sheer presence and raw power of personality that the First Warmaster exuded. Not to mention all the tales and stories that you've heard of her and her Officio - feats of strength and power that rivalled even the tallest tales of infamy and bloodshed that they spun about Kharn, or any other Warmaster.

But not even that could really gloss over the fact that your Officio had suffered a terrible blow, one hard enough to send it reeling. It wasn't a matter of finances, or numbers, or anything like that. Your Officio has lost one of its key members, someone who'd kept things together more than anyone else realized - or willing to admit. It was cliche to admit it, but with how everyone seemed to shut or break down at the news - some sobbing into their hands or loudly bursting into tears, as well as even outright fainting - the Officio had lost its heart the moment it was confirmed that Tomoe Mami was dead.

Murdered, the First explained in one of its rare, inter-Officio broadcasts - by none other than her own Warmaster.

By Chiaki Matsuda herself.

"Our progress?" You echo, looking directly at Kyuubey. "My apologies, Miss Amane, but as it was I've been busy trying to keep the Officio together. Even if it's been a couple of months, our staff is still in the process of recovering from the tragedy."

"Oh, of course. I didn't mean to seem insensitive as to imply otherwise. We - I - understand what you're going through. The entire First, as well as the rest of the Officios, stand in sympathy to the Ninth and its Warmaster." She gestures towards you with her massive lightning claw, and it takes you a monumental force of will not to recognize it as the threatening gesture as it is and react accordingly. By which lunging forward and smashing your elbow into her face.

Even then, though, not all your reflexes can be suppressed. "Acting Warmaster."

This makes her blink. "I'm sorry?"

"Acting Warmaster, Miss Amane." You allow yourself to breathe. "The position of Warmaster is not officially vacated yet. Until the current Warmaster herself has been retrieved, questioned, and stripped of her rank, I am only Acting Warmaster."

This furrows her brow. "But she--"

"Until she is retrieved, questioned, and stripped of her rank, I am only Acting Warmaster." You repeat stiffly, your shoulders squared.

Both of you glare at each other in silence, your determined blue eyes meeting surprised azure ones.

[1/2]
>>
>>2495645

"I apologise for Sayaka Miki." Kyuubey is the first to break the silence here. "She is quite the stickler for rules. Rest assured this does not signify any measure of skepticism or disbelief of the First's judgment and reporting of recent events." He turns to look at you, a silently-questioning gaze in his perfectly-circular ruby eyes.

You ignore it, and keep your gaze leveled at Hazuki. Matching her stare for stare.

"...Yes. Of course. Rules must be abided by, after all." She nods after a moment, her silver hair cascading down her shoulders and back in luxurious waves in that slight movement.

"As for our progress with those duties, I regret to inform you that we have yet to gain any sort of noteworthy breakthrough in either one since our last meeting. Our efforts continue unabated, however." Kyuubey ends his brief report by facing Hazuki as well. "And like before, we will notify you as soon as we do find anything of note to report."

"I see." Hazuki replies softly, carefully. Seemingly pensive as she continues to stare at you. "And you're sure you've found not a single trace of Matsuda? Or any of the Golden Weapons?"

Kyuubey shakes his head. "We have multiple leads, but most of them are turning up cold. The same goes for the Golden Weapons. We believe she took all of them with her before she departed for the Lunar Base."

"Yes, you did say that." Again with that stupid lightning claw. Who the hell brings something like that to a meeting, anyway? Sure, you bring Blueberry Cheesecake Brownie every so often, but it's not like you pull it out and wave it around while you're in a fucking meeting. "Are you sure that she didn't hand them off to anyone else, though? Or someone could have taken them from her before her visit?"

Both you and Kyuubey look at each other. After a moment, he answers for you. "No, I don't believe so. I was with her the entire time during our visit. Before she went berserk. She did not have any contact with anyone else."

Murderface going berserk. Yeah, right. You'd sooner see her go sober.

"I see." Hazuki repeats, before sighing. "It's my turn to apologize. I know my constant pestering about this mustn't be helping, but it's important that we know right away if anything is found. These Golden Weapons are...they're very dangerous. They need to be recovered as soon as possible, and placed in the custody of the First. Them ending up in anybody else's hands - who knows what kind of calamity we'll be dealing with next."

"Agreed." Kyuubey nods again. "We will double our efforts."

"Thank you." Again with the smile, before she turns towards you. "Ah, Just another thing before I get out of your hair. Miss Sayaka, I remember hearing something about you having sparred with the prime suspect--"

"Chiaki Matsuda." You reply, trying to stop yourself from imagining breaking her spine over your knee.

"Yes, her." She nods. "She beat you, didn't she? Did she display anything strange during your bout? Any...eccentricities?"

How do you respond?

You wince at the memory of that particular sparring match. It didn't start out to be one - you just wanted to train her a bit, that's all. Teach her something else to do rather than just getting in someone's face and pumping them full of lead. You weren't expecting things to turn out the way they did.

Although, you'll be the first to agree that you thought about the possibility the moment both of you stepped onto the training mat together. To have that one perfect chance of being able to just make her feel every single molecule of rage, of frustration, of bloody-minded hate that you harbored for her. To be able to vent it out in a way that wouldn't have you being hunted down to the ends of the earth for the murder of your own Warmaster, or at the very least a stiff fine and a demotion for the attempt. Thanks to those stupid axes that you were training her in the use of, you did get that chance - and it would have been perfect, injuries and all, if she didn't knock you out cold at the very end.

You shake your head briefly before finally responding to Hazuki. Telling her that she'd have to be a bit more specific, as Murderface was remarkable in her own right. Eccentric wasn't quite the word you'd use, but there had always been something strange about her. Something...wrong, somehow, like she didn't belong.

"She didn't belong?" Hazuki echoes. "Ah, such as not gelling with the Officio in some way, a tendency to be alone, something like that...?"

"No? Well, yes, kind of." You blink as you find yourself expounding upon your answer. "But that's pretty common, isn't it? Especially when Vindicares are concerned. No, it was more like she didn't belong...anywhere." Your eyes widen slightly at this, as if giving voice to your thoughts made them all the more real. "Like she wasn't supposed to be here at all."

...Well, of course. A nasty voice inside you speaks. You found her in a Witch Barrier, after all. A Magical Girl, contracted to no one, half-dead yet asleep in a nightmarish world full of flesh-eating Witches.

Something you probably shouldn't be spilling about her. Not at the moment, anyway.

"I see." The Warmaster of the First nods. "Do you think that would explain her--"

"No," You cut in quickly. "Murderf--I mean, Matsuda was weird, sure. It always felt like she was haunted by something. But nothing about her gave me the impression that she would do anything like you say she did."

"I concur. Chiaki Matsuda had her own share of faults and quirks, but nothing that could have clued us in to the part she played in this terrible tragedy."

"...Mmm. I see. Thank you for your honesty." Hazuki replies a moment later, seemingly having come to a decision of her own. "Very well, that will be all. Miss Sayaka, Kyuubey, thank you for indulging me yet again. Hopefully, we can all get to the bottom of what happened, find what we need to find, and move on."

It's here that you allow yourself to breathe just a bit more freely. Good, she's about to leave. You won't have to tolerate another moment being in the same room with her. With any luck, you won't have to suffer this again for another week, at least--

"You don't have to look that disappointed," You hear Hazuki say mildly, and you blink as you realize that you might have given away a bit more than you intended. You watch her smile at your own awkward apology. "Don't worry, Miss Sayaka. I know how uncomfortable this is, really. I wish we could have met before all this happened. Maybe things would have turned out a bit better between our Officios instead of this...formal coldness."

...Yeah. Maybe.

She's a bit astute than you thought. You'll have to watch out a bit more for this one.

"Anyway, I'll be going. But before that, I was asked to pass a message from our Eversor Rank Leader, Satsuki Kiryuin-san. She said she'd like to spar with you sometime, if that's something you're up for." She smiles. "What should I tell her?'

Now you can't help but wear your emotions on your face, here - mainly that of pure shock and surprise. Satsuki Kiryuin wants to spare with YOU? The former High Marshal of the Black Templars and Warmaster of the Second?

The same person even Kirika herself was skittish about fighting? Hell, not even Kharn tried, and she was always up for a fight.

But maybe...

How do you respond?

[]Accept politely. It would be an honor to spar the Eversor Rank Leader of the First.

You force a smile of your own, before shaking your head in gentle refusal. Sparring would have certainly been welcome, especially with a clearly superior opponent. In fact, it was one of the things Kirika had always insisted on. 'Always look for opportunities to get your ass handed to you,' she'd always lecture during her more serious, lucid moments. 'It's the only way to get better. Otherwise you're just wasting time and fucking around.'

But no. As flattered as you are that Kiryuin Satsuki even knows your existence and is actually throwing down the gauntlet - you don't have the time to spare for it. You have an Officio to keep running. Maybe some other time, you tell Hazuki.

"Oh?" The First Warmaster's smile falters a bit. "Well, I'm sure she'll be disappointed to hear that. But it's perfectly understandable, of course. Just make sure to take some time for yourself, Miss Sayaka. A Warmaster - acting or not - always has something that needs to be done, but she doesn't have to be busy all the time."

With that she steps back, giving you a small and cheerful wave with her lightning claw - before disappearing. No sudden charge of static electricity or a peal of thunder, nor the light-bending vanishing act of Callidus - just a disappearance, like a ghost briefly manifesting before fading away before you could even notice. As if she never were.

"..." Both you and Kyuubey stare in silence at where the Warmaster of the First had just been a few moments ago. A moment later, your Incubator lets out a sigh, before walking back to his array of computers. One of the LCD monitors still conspiciously dead, its flat screen shattered right down the middle.

"My apologies for making you suffer another one of these meetings, Miki Sayaka." Your Incubator finally says after a while. "I was hoping I could give her the answers she needed by myself, but she was adamant to speak to you for some reason. Why, I have absolutely no idea."

It's fine, you tell Kyuubey as you step up behind him, respectfully veering your eyes away from his screens. It's impolite to shoulder-surf, after all. Acting Warmaster duties and all that.

"Yes, well, I can clearly see you're trying your best to acclimatize in such short notice, and I'm grateful for that." He doesn't look at you as he says this. "Just as I'm grateful that you managed from letting your frustrations get to you during that meeting."

It would have been unseemly otherwise. There wasn't any reason to tick off the First any further than they already were with the Ninth, anyway.

"True. In any case, don't let me detain you, Miki Sayaka."

There's your cue to leave.

You find yourself looking down at the ribbon tied around your wrist. Its comforting pressure reminding you of its presence.

[]Ask him about what happened. What really happened up there.
[]"Murderface...she didn't really kill Mami, did she? That's crazy, right?"
[]Leave. You have work to do.

Even if it was supposedly some crazy berserker Chiaki, the damage reports by the First sounds like a bit too much. This is the -First- after all.

Most likely, Coobies hasn't the answers we are looking for, but Sayaka needs some peace of mind.

You can't help it. You need to know. You need to ask. There's no going around it.

"Murderface." You manage to say the name without stuttering, even with your throat suddenly dry. "There's no way she could have killed Mami. There's no way."

Silence.

"Not even while under the influence of those...things she took with her. It's impossible. No one loved Mami more than Murderface did."

"..."

"She didn't kill Mami. Right, Kyuubey?" You step forward, closer to the Incubator that you've served loyally for all this time, who you've bled and fought for without question. Without regret or remorse. "I need to know. Murderface couldn't have--"

"I don't know what happened, Miki Sayaka." Kyuubey's reply is short, tense. Tight. "Everything happened much too quickly for me to truly discern what was happening." He shakes his head. "As much as I am loathe to admit, I am forced to accept the First's input in this. For now, we must go with what they're telling us. We can realign what we know after we find Matsuda."

...That's it, then? That's all he's telling you?

"Yes, in fact. To your duties, Acting Warmaster Miki Sayaka. I'm sure you're needed elsewhere."

"..."

You salute him in silence before making to leave. Your shoulders squared, your stride as hurried as it ever was.

Before you could walk through the doors, though--

+ No. + Your Incubator's voice intones in your mind, slotting in neatly between your thoughts. + I don't think for a second that Matsuda could have murdered Tomoe Mami, much less harm her. +

You stop in your tracks and whirl around to face Kyuubey, pulsing your own pained thoughts at him, ragged and angry and raw and bleeding. + Then, WHY? Why the FUCK we have to play through this fucking charade?! +

Silence, before he replies. When he does, you're struck with a dread that stops you cold, like a bucket of ice emptied over your head.

+ The First is planning something. Not just its Warmaster, but its entire Officio, along with its Incubator. What it is, I'm not sure yet, but I will find out. +

It takes you several moments to absorb that. It takes you a bit more to recover and actually pulse back a reply. +...Then, was Mami...?+

+ I suspect she was a part of their plan. One they didn't account for, just like with Matsuda. Whether they arranged for her death, or orchestrated events to play out in this manner, I don't know, either.+ It's here that Kyuubey turns from his seat to look directly at you. + But you have my word that we will discover the truth and respond accordingly. But we need to find her first. Her and the Golden Weapons she carried with her.+

Ahh, QB, you old bastard. Glad to see you're still yourself
>>
>>2496680

Silence.

+ To your duties, Acting Warmaster Miki Sayaka. + He bids you leave again, and you find yourself turning around to walk away. Your gloved hands clenched tightly into fists, so much that the threading holding the silk together had begun to snap and tear.

Your vision misting with the tears you've done your best to stop from flowing, even during the moment when you read out your clumsily-written eulogy for the only other Magical Girl you've truly respected and loved. Even when you said her last goodbye to her.

You'll make them pay, you promise her. Whatever they did, whatever plan they had - you'll make them pay for what they did.

And you'll find Murderface. Or at least, Kyoko will - while you do your best to keep things from coming apart at the seams.

You can only hope that your stupid redhead doesn't miss you as much as you sorely miss her right now.

>>2496680
glad to see QB still has a functioning brain, heres hoping soon we can get back to chiaki running shit and we can properly rip and tear the first a new asshole for what they did, then we can deal with the faust bullshit, then the TTO shit, because fuck homucifer.

There's nothing wrong with /qst/!
>>
>>2496726
100% agreed. Half of the fun of a quest is the answers of the threads. With anonkun, you lost that. I enjoy a lot reading what other people wrote and theorized 3-4-5 years ago. It´s a lot of fun. I encourage Deculture to stay on /qst/.

>I enjoy a lot reading what other people wrote and theorized 3-4-5 years ago
You know you can still do that on Akun, right? The chat is archived automatically and forever.
>>
>>2496879
I use anonkun but even I have to pipe in.

Yes, it's archived forever and forever.

BUT it's also archived in hundreds and hundreds of chat pages that aren't categorized in anyway. In order to find a specific thing, you'll have to dig like its the Bone Wars.
>>
>>2496889
>hundreds and hundreds of chat pages that aren't categorized in anyway
And that also don't work most of the time thanks to kascode.
>>
>>2496711
Huh, within a couple weeks, I see both JQOP and you come back. What a time to be checking out /qst/ instead of just binging the archives.

Its impressive to see some of those quests that made their mark on /tg/ and 1d4chan, and to see they are still going today. Its like bearing witness to living legends of times since past. I personally haven't read MGNQ yet, but its been on my ever growing list of classics to check out. One of the highly recommended ones. Mind giving me a run down if you don't mind?

I haven't checked recently, but I'm still hoping Deme/Planefag returns some day soon to give us more of his awesome writing.
>>
>>2499649
Thing is MGNQ is hilariously complicated to explain for how long it is, the long and the short of it is basically the events after the latest madoka movie, but gone utterly fucking bonkers, main character is a hardboiled alcoholic magical girl with a penchant for murdering the shit out of things. It's a blast, just read it from the beginning, alot of here have been here on this ride from the very first thread and there's a good reason why this is basically one of the classical must read of quests.

I stand here, having suffered at the hand of life, smiling at the return of a litteral epic.

But I have to ask...

How can we fix /qst/ in your mind? Being the last of the grand QMs to fight against the changes, your word would be heeded... presumably.

If you were to utter any word, any phrase, any statement to make /qst/ great again?, then you shouldn't hide it. Maybe... somewhere... someone... will hear the outcry of the moonrabbit who has fallen.

And on another note, Still on page 2. The possibility to ride this horse to death is there. Unless it has to do with formating.

Alas, we heard your call, and came as the pilgrim we are, to hear the final chapter... maybe final chapter.

And good thing you didn't went to Akun, holy shit are the anons horrible there.
