You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

Still hard to process you met the king a few days ago. Since then nothing of note has happened. You’ve been taking the princess to her lessons as is expected of you. The job seems fine, better than the army, but Marianne’s way with words still doesn’t put you in the best of moods. Yesterday Marianne informed you that she is to spend the day with her father. That means you have a day all to yourself. It’ll be a nice change of pace.

>Guard Rank: SNAKE
>Congratulations, you are now a miserable Snake!
>You might be a more respectable creature than a lowly Lizard, but you're still nothing special.
>Though you've shown some traits of "people," the Princess still doesn't see you as one.
>She dislikes you a bit less now, though

As you’ve got nowhere you are needed, you decided to lie in. Slovenly you put on your clothes many hours after you usually do and go for breakfast. You need no feast today, it won’t be a long one. After piling up your plate and thanking the kitchen staff for a meal you make your way back to your room. Deciding your clothing choice was too heavy today you change into shorts and a light shirt. Neither shows your role as the Princess’ bodyguard but you are not on official duty, so no need to worry about that. The guards seem to have recognised your face so you should have no trouble getting around the castle.

It is now afternoon and you’ve finished a light lunch. Thinking of what to do, you come up with three ideas. The first is to find the last Guard Captain who resides inside the castle; it’ll be good to know all of equal to your rank. Or you could go train and build up a nice sweat whilst the bright sun beats down on you. Lastly, you could go to the library and take a book outside.

Thinking about your job, you must be in the best shape possible to protect your princess. Walking through the castle like many times before it seems oddly without people. At this time of day you expect to be able to scout out a person now and again milling around with some menial task. It seems the population drop from the last fifty years has been duplicated here.

Leaving the castle you find yourself outside and in front is with littered large tents which hold the training grounds for the king's men. Reaching the dummies you are greeted by the sight of many soldiers practicing their blade work on the inanimate objects.

Three soldiers come up to you and ask you if you really are the guy who beat the border guard captain and if you really are the princess’ bodyguard. Replying affirmatively to both you proceed to ask them if any of them wants to spar. Their faces blanch from the offer, which is quite the feat considering the heat. Replying no, they leave you to go to town on a dummy. It isn’t the thrilling opposition you crave but beggars and choosers.

Under the midday sun, you work up quite the sweat. You recall all the techniques taught to you while in the army. Starting from basic ones you move your wave up to the more advanced ones. Meanwhile, this is going on you, so focused on your trade you ignore how your blade is cleaving through the wood. Finishing all the regimented teachings you’ve acquired, you move on into sword work you’ve created.

Then the dummy exploded into shards of wood, splinters go flying. Already having built up a crowd, who jealous gape at your skill, but now all eyes are upon you from the outburst. Some look at you with open mouth. They can see why you won the tournament. Whilst it is nice to have them all gawk at you, you decide not to continue and leaving them with that image of you and a smirk.

Walking back from training you soak in the paintings adorning the walls. The scenes always catch your eyes no matter what the theme of the painting is. If not for the same golden frame used to house all the paintings it would also be a source of marvel. But it is drowned out by the quantity of the design.

With your eyes glued to the wall and its many occupants, you forgot to look in front of yourself. For your mistake, you feel a gentle bump to your broad chest. It is followed by a surprised squeak.

“OhmygodimsosorryIdidntmeantodothat” The brown haired girl rushes out. She looks as if she is caught before some god of war, eyes wide in fear. The expression is adorable and you wish to smother her with reassurance, but that would be far from proper.

You let out a gentle chuckle, “I’m sorry too my eyes were on the paintings, sorry to bump into you.”

“No, no i-it’s my fa… No, you are right we both messed up there, sorry.” She stutters whilst brushing brown hair that was disheveled from you impact. Her hand hurriedly grope across the floor to grab her glasses and meets yours. She recoils her hand as if struck by a viper but then submissively reaches out for you to pass her glasses.

Stretching your hand out with her glasses in your palm you say, “Well, let's pretend that never happened and start again. My name is Reinhold the Princess’ new bodyguard; it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

The timid girl takes her glasses back and slides it on to her face after inspecting them, “My name is Sylvie, Sir Vincent’s daughter. Thank you, sorry about-“

Not wanting her to continue the cycle of apologies you cut her off, “No worries, don’t be so nervous. I don’t bite. So what had you so deep in thought?”

She shows you the book she has clutched to her chest. It is bound by a brown leather with an odd purple symbol in the centre. With a much more confident face, she tells you, “I’m the court magician’s apprentice, I’m going to the library to test out a spell. You want to watch?”

She then realises how forward she is being and partially uses the book to cover her all her face but her eye, nor does she retract the offer. Her sparkling blue eyes now peeking above the book, almost pleading you to follow her. Clearly, she is holding her studies in high regards and wants a person to share the joys of her work with.

“Yeah, sounds great. I know a bit of magic myself.” Sylvie eye’s shimmer at you, asking herself if she has found a kindred spirit.

“Wow, well I guess it isn’t too rare in the castle but it’s always nice to meet another person with the gift. I’m from the Rock lineage, a sixth generation in fact. What about you?” Fully interested in the topic, no longer was she thinking about the embarrassment from earlier.

“I’m from the Darkness line, can’t say which generation. Never met my parents. So no one to tell me.” You don’t care, a lot of people don’t know their parents. If they left you at a whore house maybe not knowing them was a gift.

Her face scrunches up as you tell her. She fears that she has stepped on a mine. It is obvious that this girl isn’t the most confident in the world. But you are used to it and she’s hardly at fault.

“It’s ok, I never knew them. Doesn’t bother me.” You lie to her with a straight face, it has almost become a routine.

“Sorry for bringing it up. But darkness is really cool. Only one other person in the castle is of the same origin, my teacher Niklaus. When I show you my magic you’ve got to show me some of yours.... If you want.”

When you reach what must be the library you are welcomed by a giant room furnished with a symbol of a book. From your meeting with the king, you know why all the doors must be of such height. It would not be proper to have the king hunch in his own castle. Bookshelves are twice your height. All packed with books. You’ve never seen so many books. The rows of shelves would seem endless if not the large window illuminating the room on the opposite side of the room. Stained glass shows a scene with vibrant colours of what you assume to be an old king of Granache writing into some parchment with books littered around him.
>>
She takes you to a secluded corner of the room, to an unremarkable table with bench either side of it. You sit on opposite benches as she places the book in the centre of the table. Her eyes boring into the book, flipping pages until she finds the correct one. The book is well kept and is in good condition but you can’t make out the words on the page as it is upside down for you.

Sylvie stares intently for one moment to steady herself for the task. She brings her palms together then slowly opens them. As her hands part, you can see a fist-size chunk of rock emerge. Then the rock starts to glow a dark amber colour. The rock begins to draw into itself. You can feel the energy ripple off of her. It is nothing close to being in the Kings’ presence but still sizable and greater than what you could achieve.

With a final flash of light, you see what remains of the rock. Hovering between her hands is now a brown gemstone, it is unblemished. She scoops it up into a hand and takes a closer look at it. A smile plasters her face.

“Yay!" She does a little jump, her face then turns a bright red, remembering you are there. "It was my first time casting that. I don’t know if you know but gems are the easiest things to enchant. I should go show Niklaus. Bye!” She runs off grinning from ear to ear.

“Bye…” You say to the already gone girl.

Then her head reappears from around the corner, “You can come to see him with me if you like?”

“Yeah sure.” You say picking up her book, which she forgot while lost in her jubilation.

She walks at a very brisk pace obviously pleased with her achievement. Arriving at your destination Sylvie raps on the door. “Niklaus, are you there? Can I come in?”

“Yes to both.” You hear a tired voice croak.

She pushes open the door still leading you. Inside you see countless weapons and beakers roiling and boiling. In a few glass containers, you see what look to be humanoid body parts but warped horribly. In the centre of the room is a form of a hunchback. His hair is thin, long and grey. If not for the life in his eyes he would not look out of place inside an oversized test tube.

“You didn’t say you brought your boyfriend along!” He scowls at her.

Whilst Sylvie blushes and babbles in protests, you step forth, “I am Reinhold the Princess’ bodyguard. I and Sylvie aren’t an item. She is just showing me around.”

“Oh the new bodyguard, maybe you should get your eyes off the princess for one moment to look at a clock and watch the time. I don’t appreciate you getting her to skip class. You know before you came to the castle she never missed a lesson.”

You bristle at the insult, who is this decrepit old man to speak of you in such a way. Easily you could break his frail body. “Thank you for the advice.” You say swallowing the budding fire down, refusing the ability to turn into a furious rage.

Sylvie interrupts before any more words are said, “Look Niklaus, I’ve made the crystal. It is of good quality and is ready to enchant.” She must have seen your clenched jaw after his remark.

Forgetting your presence he walks up to the gem and peers at it, “Yes, yes it’s very good. Well done Sylvie if you want we can get to enchanting it now? It should not take you long to learn that too, considering how quick you just learn the last one.”

They both go up to a desk and place the crystal down. Sylvie quickly checks her possessions to find her book. In vain she almost blows into another panicked stutter. Almost, but you pass it to her from behind.

“Thanks, this will probably take a while I won’t take up any more of your time. It’s nice meeting you Reinhold. Next time you'll have to show me what you can do.” She says.
>>
With that you leave the room. The cadaver of a man grunts a farewell. It seems like you aren’t going to find a friend in him. Wondering around you feel lost and unsure how to spend the rest of the day. That is until you are greeted by Nicolette.

“Hey, Reinhold what you doing wandering around the place like a lost puppy? Lost the princess already?”

You fight the urge not to check her out in that armour which is glistening in the sunlight. It must have been designed it to catch your attention, you’ve always liked long legs and hers are certainly a show.

“Marianne is spending the day with her father so I’ve got the day off.”

“Well, I’ll show you a good time. Come with me.” She chuckles.

“So without the stuck-up princess, you’re having a good day?” She beckons you to follow her, you like following her, you always get a good view.

“She has her moments but she’s not a back girl.” You say in Marianne’s defence.

To that she shrugs.

“So what’s this good time?”

“Well I was joking but if you are interested I know what to do to put a smile on your face.” At this point she licks her lips. “I was thinking we go to a place where we get all hot and sweaty together. I take off my armour and our moist flesh can slap against each other. You can grab me and force my lips to make all sorts of sounds you’ve never heard from me before. I can guarantee you’ll never forget the experience.”

What?

Fuck…

Is this really happening?

You don’t need to raise your hands to your cheeks to know how hard you are blushing. You’ve seen things in the whore house but never have you laid hands on a woman in such a way. She is the most beautiful woman you’ve seen, that is tied to the princess but better not add that part.

Frozen is the hallway you begin to stutter, “A-a-are… No, Wha… I-I-I…”

To which she giggles in a melodic tune and grabs your arm in hers’. “Come on Reinhold, I’ll full of energy and I want to see your stamina.”

“Come on we are nearly there,” Nicolette calls you as she skips forth.

But you know where she’s taking you now. Not only do you hear it, you feel it. The chorus of the crowd shouting becomes deafening once you get inside the guardhouse. She's has brought you to fight in the pit. Inside you see a gladiator you recognise from before, he is much short than you and shorter than Nicolette. But he is very stocky, muscles ripple as he removes his green shirt and picks up a wooden sword. Apart from him, it is empty; correctly you assume the rest of the guards are either on watch or watching from the crowd above.

“Hey, Nico we finally going to see who is the baddest guard captain is?” He calls out to her over the dim.

“Fuck it let’s do it. I’ve brought a friend along, he’s going to join in” She throws her spear against the wall

“Reinhold this is the Pegasus Guard Captain Chris, want to join in and make it a threeway? I saw you in the tournament, I’m sure you can keep up with us. Also no magic.” She asks you whilst taking her armour off. Her silver ponytail dances whilst stripping down to her underclothes, a shirt and skirt. It wasn’t the excitement you thought you were promised but it isn’t half bad. To your dismay, her clothing underneath is still rather conservative. Her eyes catch yours.

“Haha, I hope I don’t distract you too much.” She sniggers, “It is ok guys tend to look there’s nothing wrong. As long as you don’t do it too much and remember I could have your arse.”

There’s not much for you to do but to blush in response. You shouldn’t have let her catch you but she seems ok with it.

“Nice to meet you, Reinhold, heard a lot about you. You don’t like the heat?” He calls booms out in a deep monotone voice.

He noticed your blush. With that your blush becomes stronger.

“No, um… Yeah, not a fan of the heat. Pegasus huh? That’s pretty cool I’ll have to see your steed sometime.”

"You are fucking right, it is cool." He shouts.

Chris throws her a wooden spear. Nicolette snatches it out of the air and twirls it like a baton, testing its weight.

He calls to you with a second wooden sword handle held towards you, “So you joining us Reinhold? Wouldn’t be very proper for the Princess’s guard to back down from a fight.”

“Yeah!” You roar, trying to mirror the braying crowd.

“Good man.” He chucks you a sword much like he did to Nicolette.

Grabbing for it you feel its weight. Its light, clearly as it’s made of wood. That means you should be able to last longer than if you were using your metal sword.

“No shirt for you Reinhold, us men have to go topless. It brings in a larger female crowd.” You hear Nicolette gagging in the background.

She tells you as to take off all but your shorts, “Ok, so how this will work is we all go in and we hit each other with these sticks. No going for your opponent's groin or eyes. You lose when you take enough of a beating, that makes you decide you want to give up. Got that?”

You nod your head in answer.

“Good.” She shouts and then turns to run into the pit.

She is followed by Chris who similarly breaks out into a jog. You enter the stadium and look up to the bleachers overlooking the crowd. There must be a couple hundred people watching and cheering. But you can perform for a crowd. You did it in the tournament and you been in battles way larger. Nicolette runs to one side of the pit, sweat running down her skin from the fierce sun, Chris runs to the other. Both face the crowd, the bald male flexes towards them and Nicolette gives them a wave. Each are met with cheering from the benches.

From up above you hear, “Today ladies and gentlemen you are in for a treat. You aren’t greeted by just one Guard Captain, but two. Oh no, it doesn’t stop there. We’ve got the Princess Marianne’s bodyguard here. Give a loud welcome to the heavyweights.”

The masses scream playing up their role. You see men walk around the seats clearly taking bets from the crowd. Maybe you’ll get a cut for participating. Either way with the new job you are getting more than your fair share of gold, being a companion to Marianne. Glaring towards the castle, one hand raised to block the sun from your eyes, you see the balcony you and Marianne watched from. She should still be having fun with her dad.

“Now men, women, and children believe me when I say that this sort of competition isn’t usually seen down here. No, we are stuck scraping the worst guards out of the barrel for your amusement. But right here and now we've got the best soldiers who won't rip up the stadium.”

He waits for a pregnant pause, “3, 2, 1 FIGHT!”

Hand clenching your polished oak sword, you move towards the centre of the pit, your two legs pumping. Each step is over now scorched sand painted yellow due to the sun beating on it all day. Adrenaline explodes through your veins, creating a buzzing in your brain, ripping at you to act. To fight. It’s hasn’t been long since you last sparred but god how you have missed facing equal opponents

You charge and meet in the middle, each step you do kicks up more sand behind yourself. It isn’t comfortable to run on, but none of your enemies seem to be an earth mage so are having similar difficulties. Two wooden swords and a spear furry towards each other.

The clacking of wood is deafened by the excitement of the crowd. It isn’t every day they get a show like this. Like dancers, each one of you weaves out of the way of each other’s blows. In the triangle you form sand is getting throw up to add further difficulty to all combatants.

Chris thrusts forwards with his sword aimed at Nicolette’s neck. Narrowly avoiding the quick blow she bends backward so the sword only just grazes her rather than putting her out of the fight. In retort, she thrusts herself and her spear forwards after he draws his sword back. She swings the pole so it thwacks onto Chris’ side. The wooden beam makes quite the contrast to his milky skin. With that, he folds backwards still stand with a loose grip on his sword. Nicolette goes to finish him off with a last thrust to his head but with his sword, he pushes the attack aside and throws a panicked punch to her kidneys to loosen the pressure on him.

To this the crowd screams more cries of excitement, they call for Nicolette to finish him off.

He is unstable on his feet. You can get him now. Nico seeing what you are doing backs off to give him space. You swing the sword arching like a scythe to put him down. Trying to block he throws up a sword. The sword swipes down full force, on to his hand. With a guttural cry, he drops his sword and watches it fall.

Your fist rockets up and smashes into his temple. That blow shakes his world. He wobbles on his knees and collapses. But you left your back open to Nicolette. A blow cracks down on your shoulder, it hurts. It hurts a lot. But it won’t impair you in any way.

One down one to go.

No, fuck no. If you remember I did the flaw thing at the start of the quest? If you were to roll under a 30 you would have tried to beat her into a bloody pulp.
>>
>>2498912
So, we make a big mistake and get whupped or something? I'm glad we didn't go full murder retard. Let's take the loss gracefully guy's. We can get a rematch later.
>>
>>2498912
We must learn to harness our rage. Nobody's going to want to fuck with the Princess with a batshit crazy berserker protecting her

30 was to attack her, 10 was to try to fuck her up bad, 5 was to try to kill her. Reinhold gets angry. You would have regretted it but in the moment you get carried away.

>Anger-Abhorra Being the bottom of the pile has worn on you long. Years of degradation by the patrons of the whorehouse or kids who mocked you in the street has rubbed you rough. Entering your teen years you no longer took such derision openly and increasingly fewer and fewer words would set you off into a rage. It was far from a rare sight to see you leaving a boy or a man who said one too many words about your situation with a bloody nose, a broken finger or even one time a cracked skull. In the army they tried to teach you to harness your anger and with your NCOs always screaming into your ear every free moment they had created plenty of rage spare.
>>
>>2498934
The whole idea is we can get some culture and learning while we're doing this gig. Become a knight and all that. Somehow I don't think batshit crazy works in there.
>>
>>2498946
To add to this meeting the blue-haired fag is going to be fun.
>>
>>2498949
Who says we can't be both.
>>
>>2498972
Being a Knight typically means being chivalrous. You know, having a code, being professional. Having ethics and all that. There's nothing wrong with having anger, as long as it's controlled. Letting it run wild get's a princess killed.
>>
>>2498986
Yeah, we should check our emotions. There's no need to be discourteous, even if Monique is kind of a dick.

Sweat beading then rolling down your chest. You can win this.

You step forward into her guard. Her spear being too long to effectively engage you at closer ranges.

And that’s when you had to fuck up. Fuck up in front of all these people. By tripping over Chris.

By the time you start to fall Nicolette has already begun to swing the butt of her spear. Two feet off the ground it connects with your chin.

Seeing nothing but a darkness. You usually like darkness, it is part of you, but this one is filled with pain and humiliation.

Raising both arms into the air she roars as if some foreign conquer claiming new land. The pack from the stands mimics with another yell. Most of the onlookers are on their feet clapping at the scene. You can’t help but feel this three-way was rather unfair, if only you didn’t trip. You’ll have to get them to do a one on one at some point later and beat them into the dirt.

“Now what an end, I think I overstated Reinholds ability. He certainly was a –FLOP-.” The crowd breaks up in laughter from the annoucer's quip.

That fucking whore.

“Everyone put their hands together for the new champion.”

How will you live this shit down?

Chris lifts himself from the sand. Pained looks etched along his face. Nicolette offers a hand out to help you up. No way are you going to touch that bitch. With a snarl, you slap away her hand and follow Chris out of the stadium, with Nicolette trailing.

“Hey, Reinhold you ok?”

“I’m fucking fine, well done, you won. Now fuck off.”

Chris says, “Hey calm down mate, it was just a bit of fun. Nothing serious.”

You realise you might be taking it too far but your blood still boils.

“Hey, Reinhold I’m sorry.” Nicolette tells you with a gentle tone.

“Yeah I get, just let me have my space."

You make your way to dinner. Someone tries to start a conversation with you about the fight they witnessed and you shut him down not wanting to relive it. Six turkey legs later you decide to retire to your room.

Getting into the hallway to your room you are greeted by Marianne. She is dressed up in more finery than you have seen her before. Wanting to impress her dad no doubt. With the rosy red smile, she greets you, “It looks like I’m not the only one who had a busy day. What have you been up to?”

>Nothing much what about you?

>Tell her about the pit

Exactly. Control is good. Focus is good. We can be civil, until it's time to not be.

ty, I was reading about Cain when thinking up this quest and felt of all flaws the players chose the best one ignoring lust
>>
Marianne has nothing to do with your humiliation, mockery, and dishonour. You close your eyes and take a deep breath, aiming to exhale your demon.

“Nothing much, but your smile is infectious. It’s very nice to see you back” She’s on your side, right? She can be harsh but she that makes her soft moments all the cuter.

“Ok… You are cheerful, as I said I’ve spent most my day with my dad. I don’t get much time with him. We went to see a play. After that, as it was so hot he carried me princess style, much to your amusement I suppose, and flew me to an uninhabited lake went for a swim. It was a rather good day, as you will find out by all the time I spend with you, I do not spend much time with him. So I make sure to treasure it.”

“Sounds great, what was the play about?”

She thinks for a second then answers you “Hmmm, I could tell you or we could watch it when we go into the city on the weekend? Well, we can decide later on the coach there. The royal box will always be open for me.”

With that, she gives you a wave and goes into her room. You follow suit into your own, it has been very hot today. Not being the biggest fan of it, it is nice getting to you cooled room. Away from the fucking pit. Wondering if the room is enchanted in such a way to not make it overly hot, you jump into the show to wash all the grime off yourself. By all rights, the sun glaring into your room should have made it much hotter than it is. You guess this is just another perk of being Marianne’s bodyguard.

Still dripping wet you leap into your bed. Once arriving you feel all the ache and pains acquired in the arena build up. Commanding you to go to sleep. And you do so.
>>
And that's tody done.

What did you like? What didn't you like? What do you want to see next time?

Pretty much all the money collected goes to charity, for wounded veterans. Ignoring the 10% going to the fighters.

Thinking about planning next session, what do you want to see/do when you go into the city with Marianne?

>>2501381
Thanks
>>
>>2504453
Could just go out and explore the city, see what the markets hold, check out theaters, find spellbooks to study from, etc
>>
>>2504739
Ok, cool. The standard stuff, just curious if anyone wanted to do anything out of the ordinary. Let's hope rolls will be better this time.
>>
>>2504763
Well, we could always stumble upon crazier stuff, like breaking up a fight, stopping a robbery, or getting involved in a bizarre fetch quest.
>>
>>2504782
Oh no, I've got the showpiece for the session thought out, but I was thinking about the other stuff.

So how much of a divergence have we had so far? And how weird is that going to get?
>>
>>2510572
>So how much of a divergence have we had so far?
Not much but check the archives if you're interested. But I plan for it to diverge soon.

> And how weird is that going to get?
So magic is done by generation. The closer you are to the first generation, the greater the potential you have. If you want to decrease your generation, closer to the original, you will have to consume a more powerful mages' heart. That's the oddest thing I've thought of so far.

If you think you've heard something similar before, it's because the idea is stolen.

No the website's name is classed as spam on 4chan due to the exodus of 2015. It is called 8__Chan without the ___

They disappeared, I guess I didn't save them. But I've redone them now.
