=======================(Chapter Start)========================

Ranbon Province, to the west of Sol Province

Village of Keth

Time: Daybreak

Sunrise came to a small little village, a collection of about a dozen different buildings circled by a small palisade of logs and earthwork. It was a fairly flimsy barrier but it was all the town could afford, that and a small, weak rune wall. The temperature was fairly cool this morning, and something ominous blew on the winds. The townsfolk had been witness to several odd occurrences around the village. A few villagers had found the corpses of mutilated animals hanging in the nearby forest, your handiwork. A few trifles to gain a small sliver of power. Power you’ll use to gain far more.

Kent slowly woke up from his stupor and immediately got to work, today was the big day. The day he’d been planning for months, he had a lot riding on this, and he needed to make sure everything went exactly as he had planned. The man lifted up his pillow and found the chalice exactly where he had left it. The thing had called out to him for months, but only recently had he accepted its hanging offers, offers of power and respect. He would have this, all for a small piece of himself, and a few sacrifices. It would be well worth it.

Why are you going this far?
1. To gain the admiration and respect of a village girl you’ve taken a liking to.
2. Because you hate that bastard Reli who lives across the river, and you want to get back at him in style
3. To lay waste to your village, you’ve had to live with their silent scorn for years, and you do not deserve it.
4. The sheer power, you don’t have any reason, but you know you want it.
5. Immortality, this is what you were offered by the chalice, and surely it wouldn’t lie to you.
6. Wealth, you hate the poverty you’ve had to live in since the other villagers outcasted you to a small shack near the edge of the rune wall the protects the town from the dangers of the night.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. In most situations, only the first two dice rolls will be counted, if the threads become more popular this may be changed. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to overlook this rule (a ton of crits later down the chain for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Interviews: Interviews will generally be a freeform set of questions that the readers have to ask the person they are interviewing. No hand holding here, I will purposefully leave up wrong answers or decisions, although for the most part careful readers will be able to tease these out.
10. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

Kent slowly rolled out of bed, and grabbed his wash bucket. Splashing his face a few times he remembered why he was doing this. It was because he had taken a liking to one of the village girls, Calea, a farmer’s daughter, who lived further down the river. Kent had tried to work up the courage on multiple occasions to try and court her, but had never been able to. Now that bastard Reli has made moves on her, and Kent despised him for it. Kent glanced across the river to see Reli’s house. While he didn’t quite see him through the window, he imagined that he was in there somewhere, mocking you.

No matter, Kent had a few more things to gather before he performed the ritual under the moon tonight. It’s a shame he couldn’t quite get the thing done on a full moon, but he was far too impatient to wait for the next one. The stage was set, now to gather his supplies.

Kent had slowly lost more and more faith in the town and the angels since he hadn’t been able to woo the lass of his dreams. He eventually decided that he’d pursue other avenues.

Decision:
1. Go for the runes first, you know of a local mage living in the forest, and know that he has a vast collection of runes. You need to steal some of them. The chalice told you which ones of course.
2. You need a good deal of blood to create the summoning circle, a deer or horse, or perhaps a boar would do nicely, if you want to show off you could go for something a bit… higher up the food chain.
3. Practice the incantation outside of town, if you don’t get it completely correct you’ll pay with your life. Least if that chalice is to be believed
4. Go and check on your location, an old abandoned chapel in an overgrown hamlet in the forest, make sure nobody has discovered your crimes.

Kent normally had his daily farming to get to, but today… well, a day off couldn’t hurt him too much. besides he had far more important things to do then simply farm. He decided that he needed to head into the woods and make sure that his little ‘secret’ project hadn’t been discovered. Bad deeds fostered paranoia all too well.

Kent left his house and shot glares at Reli when he saw the man. A smug son of a bitch if Kent had ever seen one. A few other farmers lived in the village, about five families or so, but they didn’t really have any tradesmen. You couldn’t find the village on too many maps, even though it had been in this spot for a few hundred years now.

The walk through the woods was fairly quiet, but Kent noticed some deer and a few boars slowly working their own paths through the brush. His destination was an old abandoned hamlet, completely taken over with plants. The only thing that still stood at all was a heavily dilapidated chapel. It had been there since anyone could remember, and had probably been there for many hundreds of years. The holy eye emblazoned on the front of it was a much older symbol, with fewer of the adornments of saints and hero’s, there had not been so many recognized in those days. Less of the glitz and glamour, and more of the heart. That’s what Kent’s father had always said anyway.

The chapel was quiet, nobody had been there since he’d left, none of his tripwires or other traps had been set off, and his little black mana trap he’d cooked up was still fully charged based on how its surface pulsed.

The main alter in the center of the structure still stood, the sunlight shone brightly on it through a long rotted away roof. Around it stood five figures. The Grand Seraph, the Seraph of Dawn, the Seraph of Noon, and the Seraph of Midnight, and one more Seraph that Kent did not recognize. He figured it was some sort of mistake or embellishment, who’d ever heard of four seraphs? It had certainly never been talked about in the chapel of the local hamlet.

The circle had been pre-drawn in the dirt, several interconnecting lines made with dug out little ditches for blood to be poured into. The whole setup had leaves placed over top of it to protect it from rain. Overall nobody who didn’t know it was here would find it.

Decision:
1. Go for the runes first, you know of a local mage living in the forest, and know that he has a vast collection of runes. You need to steal some of them. The chalice told you which ones of course.

As Kent departed the church, he took the time to grab the chalice from his pack, the thing was an ornate masterwork, all sorts of gems and other intricate details lined it. But it was far too precious to sell. He could hear a voice inside of the thing, calling out to him. It would need more than just a bit of elk blood or some runes, but that would come later.

He stopped by a hollow tree and retrieved a few things he had squirreled away, a small hunting knife, and a short bow, as well as four arrows he’d managed to make. They weren’t exactly expertly crafted, but they would get the job done. The knife was certainly sharp enough to slit somethings throat.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The mage’s hut was a fairly simple construction. The man was crazy enough to live on his own out here but did have a few small runes creating a tiny rune wall around his home. From what Kent could tell the man was not home at the moment. Although without being inside the place he wouldn’t be able to know for sure. He knew where the man kept his runes, the chalice had told him after sacrificing animals around the forest, it had told him about Reli courting his girl as well. He hadn’t believed much of it at first, but every time he’d checked one of these prophecies they had turned out to be completely correct.

The decisions Kent could take were clear, either charge into there, and face a potentially powerful mage. Sneak in, and try to quickly get what he needed. Lastly he could wait to see if the mage was even home, although he might just come back if he did wait, which would complicate things. Still, since completing a few of the rituals, Kent had come to possess some black mana, not a whole lot, but far more than he could’ve gotten by training naturally, that was for sure. He even knew a single spell, blight, which could kill a man if casted powerfully enough.
Decisions:

1. Rush in, arrows and magic blazing
2. Sneak in, there is a small window you can use to get a peek inside as well.
3. Wait and see from a safe distance (will use up time)

Kent slowly snuck his way up to the hut. He had never been too stealthy but he could feel the chalice aiding him, he would succeed. He quickly poked his head over the window frame and took a good look inside. It was exactly how he had seen it. A small shelf full of different runes, a chest with who knows what inside of it, a small cot, a cooking pot, and a few other various things. Nothing of much real value besides the runes, perhaps something in the chest, but it had a lock on it and Kent didn’t’ know much about how to get those open besides good old brute force. The lock didn’t look all that good though. He could probably just shove his dagger into the thing and jimmy it open.

Now Kent had a decision to make, a quick snatch and grab, or would he take his chances on the chest itself? Time was ticking and he had to make his choice quickly.

Deicisons:
1. Go for the shelf with the runes, grab what you need, and get out
2. Go for the runes, then go for the locked crate if you have time.
3. Head inside and wait for the owner to get back, might as well kill two birds with one stone.

Let's wait until we have demon powers before we try to kill that mage. Hopefully, when we become all powerful, the battle between us would be so epic that some 70's stoner decides to have that painted on his van after a couple of bong rips.

calling it a night. I'll be starting much earlier tomorrow if everything pans out.

This is a nice change of pace for me and work on the graveyard scene in the main quest has gone well, I have a fairly good idea of how it'll go now with the seven member party we have.

alrighty, I'll be writing this tomorrow then.

Anywho, Kent is a fairly weak mage, the man has about 2 bars of black mana and that is all.

Henry is a complete beast.

Kent carefully pulled himself through the window into the hut, making sure not to damage the nicely painted wooden shutters. Kent figured the mage had made them himself. The room was fairly tiny and cramped, but Kent didn’t stay too long, he simply grabbed what he needed and left. A few different types of runes, he didn’t have a clue what they did exactly, but the voice in the chalice had been VERY specific on which ones he would need, and where he would need to place them. He figured they were already powered, since they glowed with a green energy.

Quickly departing the scene, he made his way back into the woods, out of sight and hopefully out of mind. He figured the mage wouldn’t be all too happy about his missing runes, but he would never find out who had done it. He talked to the chalice for a moment to make sure everything was done correctly, then, putting the stolen runes into his knapsack, he headed off to his next destination.

There were only a few more pieces of business to conduct.

1. You need a good deal of blood to create the summoning circle, a deer or horse, or perhaps a boar would do nicely, if you want to show off you could go for something a bit… higher up the food chain.
2. Practice the incantation outside of town, if you don’t get it completely correct you’ll pay with your life. Least if that chalice is to be believed

Kent headed deeper into the woods, to a place that not too many people even knew about, let alone ventured to. Worst case scenario he’d have to deal with some woodsman or something similar, and he knew he could deal with that sort of trouble. The forest eventually opened up into a small clearing, the thick underbrush giving way to open sky. This would be the perfect spot. The blood could wait, Kent hadn’t actually asked but he figured that the chalice would want to be fresh. There didn’t seem to be anyone around, but that could change if he stayed for too long.

“So what do you get out of this?” Kent asked, holding up the chalice.

It responded quickly to him, a dark, soothing tone, yep dripping with power. It didn’t speak, but Kent could hear it all the same.

‘I get to experience true freedom once more child, and so will you once we each get what we desire.”

“Is mortal blood that valuable?” Kent asked.

‘It’s not the blood I care about. The blood is something to leave to the scavengers. We will feast on far more succulent offerings.’ Mysterious as usual.

As Kent slowly summoned up the needed energies, he said one last thing to the chalice

“Soon, my friend, soon.”

Kent quickly searched the area around the clearing, although for a moment he thought he had found someone, it turned out to only be a small family of deer. He decided that he had to do this now or someone would find him. He hadn’t been this paranoid before but what he was doing was deeply heretical.

As he headed back into the clearing, his mind was troubled. He had a few doubts but those were quickly quieted by the voice in the chalice, soothing his conscience. He would use the newfound power for great things, wonderful things.

Kent once again began to draw upon the required energies. It was time to start, no more delays. He only had so much sunlight to waste. The dark energies began flowing through him and he began to recite the needed cants. He had to make sure this went perfectly.

Kent recited the cant perfectly, he knew that he could do it at dusk, and that he’d be able to attain the woman of his dreams soon after. She’d be so happy with him, he was sure of it, and that bastard Reli would be in the damned ground.

The chant took about twenty minutes to complete, afterwards Kent was fairly exhausted. He quickly sat down on a nearby rock and had his lunch, a chunk of bread and some more berries.

He took the time to speak to the Chalice once more, the thing was always talkative.

“So what were you exactly before you were trapped in there?” Kent asked.

“I was… hrm… how would I explain this properly… I was an enemy of the angels, improperly cursed to this container so I could not return to my home to recuperate properly after being properly slain. My brothers are sometimes contained in similar vessals… if they aren’t cursed to reside in that infernal chunk of moonsilver.”

“What would happen if you hadn’t been thrown into here?” Kent asked..

“Nothing to concern yourself with my dear boy, such matters are… far out the realm of mortal understanding.” The chalice replied.

Kent finished his meal and stood back up, his to-do list was rapidly dwindling. He only had one other thing to do before he could begin the ritual.

“Two things boy.” The chalice remarked. That hadn’t been part of the deal had it?

Kent had to find something to bring in. He didn’t know if he could harm someone… he would’ve rather avoided it. But the forest was full of wild game, he could certainly start there. In the local Hamlet he also knew of a couple of horses tied down in a small rider’s guild hall, he could probably knick a horse from there if he was crafty enough.

Kent double checked his water skin, it would do nicely for collecting blood from a slain animal, or whatever else he decided to use it on. The Chalice had said that fresh blood wasn’t required but would allow the ritual to be performed more smoothly.

(+30 to final incantation roll)

1. Try to hunt in the woods.

Kent quickly left back towards the woods to perform his hunt, he knew from his time growing up in the region were the best spots for game were, and sure enough he saw that same small family of deer. He crouched down low and moved into a good position, being careful that his movements wouldn’t startle the creatures. He knew well enough that the buck could impale him with those horns it had.

The chalice was still whispering into his ear, to not miss, to not screw up, and most importantly, to not die. Kent hadn’t planned on doing that in the first place. He figured no angel would guide his spirit to paradise after the rituals he’d preformed. He had only one option, right?

Kent drew out his bow and notched an arrow, he’d go for the big one, the one with the sharp antlers that could kill him if he attacked the other two, or if he missed this shot. It was all or nothing. He slowed his breathing down and began to calmly watch as it made its way into clear view, flanked by a couple of much smaller deer. The time to strike was now.

The arrow was loosed, sailing quickly through the air and into the beasts left eye. Impaling its brain and sending the creature sprawling out onto the ground. Dead in a single shot, and without causing any needless suffering, the best Kent could have hoped for. The other deer quickly scattered, the mother bleating in terror. Kent never did like killing things, and at first it had been nearly impossible… but he found he could do a lot of things he’d once questioned before.

‘All it takes is the right… incentive.’ The chalice added.

Kent quickly gathered up as much blood as he could comfortably carry in his water skin, at least as much as the elk would supply with his limited knowledge of butchery. He had only practiced with a bow for this specific moment. He’d never been much of a hunter.

Regardless, the grim deed was done. All that was left now was to perform the ritual, correct?

‘no… not quite child.’ The chalice beckoned. ‘All I require is one last test of your faith, and one more ingredient for our little brew.’

“Just say the word, and it will be done.” Kent said. “We’re in this together now, after all.”

‘Right you are… excellent….’ The chalice stated.

“So what is it you need me to do?” Kent asked.

‘I will need… a human sacrifice, for the ritual itself, otherwise I will be unable to reach through the void and grant you your reward.’

“What?” Kent asked, startled. “But… that wasn’t… what?….”

---------------DO YOU THINK THIS IS A GAME? DO YOU THINK THIS IS A GAME?--------------------

‘I merely had to ascertain your… willingness… I couldn’t risk being found out now could I?’ The chalice stated. ‘You certainly haven’t changed your mind now have you? Besides, I think we both know who would make a fine… addition to our little party.’ The chalice stated.

Kent’s mind flickered on its own to Reli, as if the chalice was beaming thoughts into it.

Part of him wanted to resist, and part of him wanted this oh so badly.

‘I cannot force you… that would null the ritual and any further…. Transactions we would make, and I… we would be back where we started. I would just have to find another…’ The chalice stated. ‘You have to make the choice, the choice for power… or to go back to that farmer’s life you loath so much….’

“What… would I need to do?” Kent asked.

‘Find a man… any mortal human really, as long as they have a soul… bring them to the ritual circle… and when the time is right, slit their throat and pour the blood into the cup, you will receive your just reward when this is all done, of that I promise.’

Decision:
1. Obey, find Reli, you’ve wanted to do this for a long time
2. Obey, find someone else to sacrifice, anyone will do (write in)
3. Attempt to refuse, you cannot go through with this…. ‘You know you can, you know it’s what you want.’
4. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT, (…bloody words etched into stone, bloody souls escaped into the night, humanity failed to make its sacrifice….)
5. Obey, not because you want to, but because you are frightened.

Kent quickly rushed off, away from the dead deer, to complete his mission and attain greatness. He didn’t know exactly what that would entail, but he was slowly gaining a better picture… maybe he was aiming too low?

He was too impatient and excited to go and wait for Reli, he had to get someone, anyone, the first person he could find. He found an old man hunched over something on the ground, probably a man from a different village out collecting berries or other local plants. What a fool, this would be easy even if he lost the element of surprise.

The man’s back was turned, Kent could just go up and whack him over the head with the back of his dagger, he was certain he could just knock the man out. Otherwise he’d have to find somebody else WITH a limited amount of time.

Decision:
1. Attack and knock out the old deacon. (roll between 25 and 95)
2. Find someone else… this is a waste of time… ‘All that matters is a soul… he will do…’
3. No… it has to be Reli… ‘revenge for a good cause is a sweet thing.’

Kent announced his presence before walking over to the man. The old man nearly had a heart attack with how surprised he had been. However Kent easily managed to calm the old man down. Kent had always had a calming effect on people, but he’d never used it for such a nefarious purpose before, he hadn’t realized he could.

‘Any skill can be put to many purposes’ the chalice whispered.

Kent slowly explained to the man that he had just slain a deer farther back into the woods, close to where the old abandoned church was, and with nighttime approaching he wouldn’t be able to get it back on his own in time. The lie was fairly believable, minus the fact he had technically been poaching. Regardless few cared what church or noble said this far into the countryside. A few minutes later, both of them were off. The walk was fairly short, winding through the forest. Eventually both of them arrived at the dead deer carcass. It was funny in a sick, demented little way, one dead corpse helping him create another. Kent still couldn’t believe he was about to do this, but with any luck the old man wouldn’t wake up before the ritual, a quick, easy death.

Decisions:
1. Knock him out with the back of your dagger and drag him back to the church (roll between 15 and 95) ‘DO IT DO IT DO IT’
2. Kill him now ‘only doing what’s needed is only so fun’

As the man had begun to skin and clean up the deer corpse, Kent snuck up behind him and quickly popped him over the back of the head with the back of his knife. The old man went limp, and lay unconscious over the corpse. The chalice was SCREAMING to drag him back to the church to complete the ritual now, telling Kent he KNEW what he needed to do. That he would have everything he’d ever wanted and more. Honestly this old man had probably lived long enough right….right? It was an even trade… Kent had to lie to himself. This was cold blooded murder, but he couldn’t afford to care at the moment.

The walk back to the church was tense, Kent was worried someone would find him, but luckily, nobody did. The sun was really starting to set now, and the occasional ghiest flickering into reality made its way across the forest path Kent was taking to the church. He hoped that the power of the chalice would protect him from the terrors of the night. He also hoped that wasn’t all it would do. He had a girl to woo after all.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The church loomed large over a long abandoned settlement, what was once grand had now rotted and decayed away. Kent would’ve found it fitting had he been the philosophical sort, alas, he was but a mere farmer wrapped up into something far beyond his understanding.

He entered the church, poured his deer blood out into the circle, and set the chalice down on the holy alter. It was ringed by the statues of four seraphs, the grand seraph, and a ghostly image of something had begun to take shape above them, in a hole where a stained glass window had once been. Kent couldn’t really make it out but he just wanted this thing done already.

‘One type of sacrifice gets replaced with another.’ The chalice said, cryptically.

Kent had one more task left to do now, it was dusk and the sun had begun to give way to the moon.

------------- KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL----------------------------

Decisions:
1. Preform the ritual, give the chalice its sacrifice, and get your wish

Kent began the incantation, and the circle began to hum to life. Now was the witching hour. The time had finally arrived. Shadows began to swirl around the room as a MASSIVE amount of black mana emanated from both the chalice and from Kent himself. Far more than he had assumed either of them had. It was terrifying, it was invigorating. He called upon his time practicing and perfectly recited the unholy rites. Things which meaning he did not know, but that still held great power. As the chant began to draw to a close, shadowy tendrils shot out from the chalice and grabbed onto the old man. They held his head and more importantly his throat over the upper end of cup itself, waiting, beckoning for blood to be spilt.

Kent stepped over to the chalice. He clutched his hunting dagger for a moment. He was about to end a life, and his life would finally be able to start. Tit for tat. His head throbbed with the laughing of the voice from the chalice, a voice which had become far more menacing, but it was far too late to stop now. Kent slit the man’s throat.

The seal was broken.

A large amount of smoke slowly began to rise from the chalice, taking a vaguely humanoid shape, the figure was about seven and a half feet tall, and its head ringed with two sets of Horns. Its hands extended out with a set of three fingers and a thumb, all clawed. In its right hand it held some sort of whip that glowed with demonic energy, a black light that did not glow. It had a single whip like tail emerging from it. Had Kent known anything about them, he would’ve known it was a fairly low ranking demon, but still an incredibly dangerous foe to any mortal man.

Req’wali slowly emerged from the chalice. It had been hundreds of years since he had been banished into that accursed container. The blood from the dead worm bag was still warm in its golden container, reflecting his demonic face back at him. With a single motion he grabbed the chalice and downed it. A smile slowly creeping across his visage, he smiled wider when he saw the startled idiot of a man cowering in fear, unable to believe what he had done. The mortal could wait for now, a small touch of destruction was in order.

Req’wali turned around to face the five statues of the seraphs, the things had been staring him down with holy hatred during this little event, and he oh so hated their perfect little faces. As if they’d been chiseled out of marble. He quickly set about smashing them into rubble with an ease that he had forgotten so long ago. He had forgotten his own strength after being trapped in that container! He first attacked the statue of seraph of dawn, the one who had been responsible for trapping him in the first place. Then he went for the statues of seraphs of noon and midnight. He held his hand up over the seraph of dusk’s stone head, but stopped himself. That was the one who had tried to keep the angel’s promises. All demons knew that she had stayed true, and for that they were grateful. He stayed his wrath for but a moment.

He turned his head up to gaze upon the form that had finally taken shape in the space where a stained glass window had been. A single, glowing eye, with a ring of triangular circling it, staring at the demon with hatred, and something else that unsettled the demon greatly. He raised his hand up towards the all-seeing eye’s depiction, etched into the empty air, and stopped as searing pain entered his form. It was all he could do to keep his composure in front of the mortal.

Ah yes, the mortal

Decision by Req’wali:
1. You have no need for him any longer, dispose of him
2. He’s proven crafty and loyal enough, and you have your full powers back, perhaps a taste of power is in order?
3. Ignore him, you have far more important things to deal with, every angel in the area will be alerted, you must make your escape
4. Attack that local rat hole, Keth. You’ve been trapped there for oh so many years, and you hate the people there oh so much

>>2526990
Possibly, I was thinking the story would end with Req’wali offering a choice as a small parting gift from us to Kent; he gets to choose whether he lives or Celea lives.
>>
>>2526949
What else can be made? How can the value be doubled or tripled. Keth should be rewarded and seen to be rewarded - by the girl and others. The rival would be a good start. Fear is food. Hate is. Mass punishment, turn them against each other. "Keth, it is time you get the reward! Let us go, find your girl and your rival and set things right."

oops - farm boy Kent. Keth is hamlet. Make sure Celea gets to see Kent finish Reli as If we are his servant perhaps. Ruined dreams are so much more tasty.
>>
>>2527019
Celea will not chose Kent if she sees Kent using a demon or sees him kill Reli. The boy's soul is destroyed with his dreams. The girl hates and fears and tells all HE is the source of the evil.
>>
>>2527030
That's the thing, Kent's deluded himself into thinking that he's the only one that could save her. It's not Cerea's choice in the matter, because what Cerea wants isn't what Kent wants.
>>
>>2527030
Better still, Kent has to kill her to keep her quiet. Or he can kill himself I suppose. But keeping the whipped cur as cat's paw and toy......
>>
>>2526949
> He’s proven craven and fearful enough, and you have your full powers back, perhaps a taste of power is in order? Use him as a pawn to show destruction while you build your strength back up to oppose the Angels. This but put a spin on it, twist his form into something mighty and foul. We said we would give him power and strength is power. We said we'd give him the ability to get 'revenge' on his rival and he'll be free to rend him apart if he so wishes.
As for the girl, well we promised that we'd give him the ability to 'have' her we never said we'd make it so she'd want him.
>>
>>2527242
Wait no even better we make certain he gets what he asked for.
We transform him into something strong and then force him to kill his rival and 'take's his woman.
Make sure he kills
>>
>>2527291
I'd rather we take her first for ourselves just to show him who's in charge, then take away his powers when he tries to protest, maybe give them to her just so she can really make him suffer for our amusement.
>>
>>2528033
The first part sure but the point is to give him all he asked for without giving him anything he wants and I'm not sure how I see a way to stretch the second half of your suggestion to fit that.
>>
>>2529042
Well, I presume that when a demon gives demonic powers over to people, they start to look more and more like demons, right? And the demon only said that he'd help Kent get the girl, not that he's going to give the girl powers as well, or that he'll only give him like two more bars of mana, and he'll look like an imp, while Celea would get ten bars at once and be morphed into some 12 foot tall abyssal monstrosity with four muscular arms and a scorpion tail. The idea I'm thinking of is "Thanks for your help, bro, here's your girl now. Good luck with your love life, provided she doesn't rip you in half like a soggy kleenex."

“Hello, Kent.” Req’wali uttered, his voice booming off of the old church’s crumbling walls.

“I…oh no…. what have I…” Kent said. The man had fallen onto the ground and was slowly inching away from the demon.

“You’ve done me a great favor… Kent.” The demon said, getting used to having a real voice once more. He felt a tinge of annoyance from his weakened state, he was also worried he’d be banished back to the pit by the angels he was sure would be on their way. He knew he wouldn’t be able to make it very far through the farmland, they’d strike him down… hrm…

“I’m willing to offer you a deal Kent.” The demon continued. “The power you seek, for a bit of… protection.”

“M-me? Protect you?” Kent asked. “How?”

“If we work together well… I won’t have to leave this realm, and the angels will not be able to track me… us…. All the power you could ever ask for, at your fingertips.” The demon continued. He didn’t enjoy making this deal, but he was lacking in options, and he could feel that damned chalice slowly pulling him back. The thing was irritatingly well made. He didn’t have the power to completely destroy it… but it had weakened, for some reason he could not ascertain. Things in the outside world had changed, he just needed to find out how.

“I have a contract for the BOTH of us to sign.” Req’wali said, assuming a professional tone of voice, fairly odd coming from his towering demonic form. The demon diped his finger into the chalice, taking a small amount of blood and elaborately signing his name on the dotted line a contract he pulled out of thin air. It was HIS contract, with some modifications to the situation of course. He’d figure some way to reneg at a more opportune time of course, he’d already made a few choice changes.

“I…. yes.” Kent said, awestruck.
>>
>>2530170
A moment later, Kent had signed the document, with some help, the man couldn’t read or write of course, but with a bit of help from the demon he managed to use a bloody handprint as a signature, the document accepted it.

Req’wali’s form turned back into ethereal smoke and surrounded Kent. The process was horrifying. Kent screamed, it felt like his soul was being torn apart. It wasn’t far from the truth, a human body didn’t normally contain more than a single soul. But Req’wali would make sure it would work, it’d just take some time for the form to accommodate him. He also knew he wouldn’t be able to completely take over the man, if he forced him to do any of this the contract would be nulled, and he’d be quickly sent back to the chalice. Of course he’d use the fact Kent didn’t know this to his full advantage.

“Now…. Our prize.” Kent and Req’wali said. His voice sounded distorted, but he didn’t care. Kent could feel immense power flowing through him. The initial discomfort and horrifying pain had given way to a sense of true power. More power than he’d ever felt in his life. All he had to do was kill a single person… how much more could he get?

‘plenty more, child. Plenty more.’

(+13 bars of black mana, 15 bars total)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kent left a trail of destruction as he made his way through the woods. With a single swipe of his claws….? He felled a few trees, clawing through them with ease. He was overjoyed, he’d have his prize! He didn’t run into anyone on the way but before long he’d made his way to the outskirts of town. There… he found Reli by the river sitting on a rock. He was with someone else… he was… he was… chatting with HIS girl. HIS prize. HOW DARE HE?!

‘I think you know what we need to do.’ Req’wali cooed. He just had to manipulate the boy enough. Soon he’d be able to get him to do anything he wanted him to. Listen to only what he told him, an agreeable arrangement for sure.
>>
>>2530175
Calea screamed upon seeing him, why was she screaming? It must have been HIM. IT WAS ALL HIS FAULT. I WANT TO KILL YOU! DIE DIE DIE DIE!

‘Don’t let me stop you.’

Reli tried to shield Calea behind him but was quickly cut into ribbons with a couple swipes of Kent’s claws. Calea shrieked and cradled the dead man in her arms, blood coating her. HOW DARE SHE?! SHE WAS HIS! IT WAS HER FAULT, ALL HER FAULT.

Kent felt all of his prior inhibitions, his cares, slowly come undone. He had changed, profoundly, his humanity, his very essence, was in flux. Why did he care about a single girl? He could achieve so much more with this new power.

‘You mean WE can, boy.’ Req’wali corrected him.

Decisions:
1. Kill her, she’s useless to you
2. Drag her back to Keth, make her watch what I… we will do… make her die… last.
3. Leave her, you have more important things to deal with. ‘Even now you feel this… sentimentality?’
4. Destroy Keth, this place has trapped me…us for far too long. ‘bring them ruin’
5. Look at your reflection in the river… something is wrong. ‘you have what you want don’t you? Why do you care now of all times?’
6. This… no this is all wrong. ‘Only death awaits you if you go back to the light, follow me, achieve greatness.’
7. ANGEL’S FORGIVE ME, WHAT HAVE I DONE? ‘You’ve already condemned yourself boy.’

only other QM's note. Demons in this setting for the most part are not 40k levels of retardedly powerful. Mind you they're some of the meanest sons of bitches in this world, but they are "killable". Req'wali is on the lower end, but high up enough to have a contract.

He'd be able to completely fuck up anything we've run across on the main quest though.

>Reli is dead fyi. We killed the poor bastard near instantly.
Doesn't mean we can't mutilate the body more, right?

I'm playing Kent as if he had some sort of mental breakdown at this point. Like, even though he's a fuckhueg half-demon and can tear open a cow in half, he's let his paranoia and his inadequacies get the better of him. I figured he's like one of those stalkers who can't handle it when he finds out that his victim just wasn't interested in him, and thinks that Reli is going out with Celea to mock him. Meanwhile, Reli had no idea what Kent's deal was, and honestly didn't pay him any mind.

Am I way off base with this interpretation? If I am, my bad.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. SHE IS MINE MINE MINE MINE. YOU CAN’T HAVE HER, I WILL BE THE ONE TO OWN HER. ME, MINE MINE MINE, FOREVER!.

I FREED YOU, WE MADE A DEAL, YOU LIED. I CLAIMED HER FIRST, MINE MINE MINE! Kent screamed without screaming. He fell to his knees for a moment. Calea had stopped crying and was staring at him with mounting horror. Did… she… no….

‘You must calm yourself…’ Req’wali said, his calm façade had given way to a more aggressive tone.

SHUT UP, SHUT UP!

“RAAAAA!” Kent screamed, terrifying Calea. She assumed a fetal position and covered her ears, trembling with fear. She had completely broken down, the events proceeding overwhelming her.
>>
>>2530529
What… what was wrong? He’d… he’d done everything right hadn’t he?

‘listen to my voice… you impudent…’ the demon said, to no avail. This was far harder than he had remembered. Req’wali cursed his own weakness and made a promise to himself to pay the welp back for this slight, with interest of course.

Kent picked himself off his knees and slowly shambled to the river. He needed to see… to see….

His face was still mostly the same. His eyes were now black with a set of red iris, similar to how the demon’s had been. Two sets of horns were protruding from his skull now, his arms had spikes coming out at the elbow, his hands had turned into a pair of horrifying blackened claws. He could SEE the mana surging around him, shadowy and full of malice. His shoes had been torn off and were replaced with a pair of clawed feet, similar to his hands. His veins were flowing with inky black blood now, each beat of his heart spreading this curse. On his back were a pair of spiky protrusions, they looked like incomplete wings… what had he done… oh no… everything was ruined….

Kent clutched his head again, his claws sinking into his scalp, drawing blood. He could feel the demon trying to seize control of him, trying to tell him things, show him things. He could feel the pure malice off the demon, he found himself wanting to be the same, drawn to it like a moth to a flame, it horrified and amazed him.

‘She can still love you.’ Req’wali said, trying to give the boy SOME comfort… he could use the idiot’s aggression and his single-minded determination against him. ‘Take her and burn the town, she will be yours, I promise.’

Kent was shaking, none of this was right, what had he done… was he okay? He was far more powerful now… maybe… maybe things would be okay?

“Kent?” Calea asked. “What….”

Kent grabbed his head and roared, a terrible, horrifying, bestial scream. The farmlands were silent except for the sobbing coming from Calea’s direction.

Kent was in control, it was HIS body, HIS girl. The demon was just a… peasant, a slave…. To HIS will.

‘No you’re not boy, this has gone far enough.’ The demon said, before horrifying spasms of pain shot through Kent’s form. Kent screamed, this time in pain, and fell onto his back. The pain continued for another minute or so, but it felt like an eternity.

‘You signed your soul to my contract, boy.’ The demon said. ‘Even with some… stipulations. We’re joined at the hip. Perhaps I’ve been too gentle thus far, but then again. When I was in that prison I wasn’t in a position of power over you.’

Kent screamed, it felt like his body was being torn apart. He wanted it to stop, please make it stop!

‘No’

Kent wanted to fall unconscious, the demon refused that mercy. After a few more minutes, Kent was a mess, breathing heavily on the ground. Someone help me… please….

‘Nobody is coming to help Kent, you can only help yourself. Help me…. Help you…’

Not only do I NOT look human anymore but you FAILED to keep your side of the bargain! How can I keep you safe from Angels and the clergy when I am CLEARLY possessed?

How can I win her heart when she SEES THIS! WHAT A MONSTER I HAD BECOME BECAUSE OF YOU!

So you want revenge on that village? What would I POSSIBLY have to gain? You want petty revenge and all the while the angels draw closer. You seek to doom BOTH of us due to your narrow vision.

I can see why the Angels stuck you that chalice. Your PATHETIC. SO PATHETIC THEY DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO THROW AWAY THE KEY!

While I love that you spent the time to write this, few issues

1. Kent isn't Henry. He isn't nearly as smart as Henry is, and wouldn't be able to put two and two together that quickly. This is the first time he's ever truly dealt with a demon. He doesn't know the rules as well as we do.

2. He just killed a man and the woman he loves seemingly hates him. This doesn't do his mental state any favors.

3. This would kinda ruin my plot

4. Kent isn't nearly cool enough to pull this off.
>>
>>2530586
Kent struggled against the demons control for a little while longer, before giving in, he had fucked up. He’d screwed everything up. He’d done so many horrible things. He’d killed two people… all for what? A bit of power he could only use at the demons beck and call?

‘You got what you wanted, the girl is yours…’ Req’wali stated.

Right… the girl…. Calea… she hated him now didn’t she?

Kent turned around to face Calea, the women had stopped crying and was staring at him, eyes wide in terror. Had she given up too? Did she think he’d just… kill her? He was a complete monster now… he’d thrown everything away…. NO NO NO

‘Give it a rest, or I’ll kill her myself.’

Spare the girl, please. Kent pleaded in his own head. Its… all I ask… please, my only request.

‘It was part of our arrangement, was it not? Besides…. She will be a useful to ensure you don’t have another… outburst… again.’

Kent braced himself for another jolt of pain, but none came. Just him and the girl, alone in the farmland.

‘I want you, to destroy that town now, I need to consume…’ Req’wali said. Kent could feel a gaping pit open up in his mind, the demon would consume the souls of everyone in his village… and he had no choice but to comply… oh god, oh angels…

‘You will learn to enjoy it, that I can promise you.’ Req’wali said. ‘Maybe the girl will come around even, it’s something to work towards. I am not unnecessarily cruel, despite what you may have been taught.’

YOU MADE ME KILL TWO PEOPLE, YOU WANT TO KILL MORE!
‘If I recall… you killed both of your own free will, mortal. The first was necessary, the second was a complete waste, I didn’t even get to touch his soul. It’s a shame, I’m sure you would’ve enjoyed watching it scream as it shattered.’

“Please, run…” Kent finally managed to stammer out.

Calea just looked at him, completely shell-shocked. She didn’t move at all, but began to rock back and forth.

‘We’ll have to “fix” her at a later point… I might have a solution.’ The demon stated into Kent’s head. He hated this.

The walk back into town was calm and short. Kent closed his eyes several times hoping it had all been a bad dream. He just… he just wished he could undo all of it. He didn’t want this… please.

‘Two hundred years I’ve been waiting for this…’ Req’wali said. ‘I want to savor every moment.’

A few people saw Kent coming, it didn’t matter, nobody escaped Keth alive. As Kent departed from the destroyed town, something inside him broke. He found Calea where he had left her, still staring at nothing, he hoped she’d wake up, he had nothing left now. He picked her up with ease and slung her over his shoulder, then he continued to set off towards wherever he was going. The demon kept assuring him that he’d be able to have his love if he wished, it would all work out. Kent had stopped listening. He didn’t care anymore.

A black cloaked man wandered up to the church where not a day earlier a demon had been released from its containment vessel, the man had a rough beard, a slightly scarred face, a couple of silvered swords, and spider the size of a man’s head resting on his shoulder, which also looked unconcerned. To his left was a woman that was wearing robes like those of the healers, although hers was black in contrast. She ALSO looked unconcerned. The two quickly entered into the church, the man drew his weapons and the woman began to draw upon two very different kinds of mana into her hands, white and black. The spider stayed where it was, perfectly fine observing.

Upon finding nothing immediately threatening, the two began to investigate the area.

The two immediately began to get to work, the woman casting a few spells to make sure the area was safe, and then the two proceeded to get to work.

“Horrible, just as bad as the town was.” The woman stated, eyeing the summoning circle. The whole thing disgusted her.

“The loss of a few dozen people is comparable to a demonic ritual Agatha?” The man asked.

“You’d do right to watch your tongue Marcus.” Agatha snapped back. “Demonic business in general is equal to any sort of devastation.”

“I don’t feel like fighting you on this, the archangel will be here soon anyway.” Marcus responded. “Let’s just have something to show for our time here.”

Agatha was already ignoring him, inspecting the four destroyed statues with curiosity. Interestingly enough, one wasn’t destroyed.

“The four Seraphs?” Marcus inquired. “Seems the demon had his priorities correct… why is there a fifth?”

“Very old… I remember reading about her once, the Grand Seraph struck her down for consorting with demons, had her whole flight destroyed to ensure the safety of the church. Her very name erased from history.”

“What do you even do for fun?” Marcus asked. “Glare at people?” He got a glare from Agatha for his troubles. “Fine fine, good lord.”

Marcus quickly whistled to Lilly, and the spider took off, startling Agatha. The thing quickly crawled up the wall and pointed to the space where a stained glass window had once been. Marcus couldn’t see a damned thing with his mage sight, he doubted Agatha could either, what had been there? He’d have to inform the angel when she arrived.

What had happened was fairly obvious. Some idiot farmer boy had gotten ahold of something he had no business owning, and did something very stupid, if the corpse was to be believed. Even if that wasn’t exactly the case, Marcus didn’t think he was that far off.
>>
>>2530807
“The mage in the woods was helpful for leading us here, should we question him further you think?” Agatha asked. “A bit of torture might loosen his tongue.”

“I hope that was a joke.” Marcus replied.

“It was.” Agatha responded. “This time.”

Marcus sighed, He HATED working with the woman, such a depressing person. He wondered if Grom was having any fun with the wild child. He hadn’t seen the man in a couple of months and he really hoped he’d be back in Celeste when the two of them had returned.

“Get yourself together, the representative from the flight of dawn is here.” Agatha said, elbowing Marcus in the side. He had to quickly stand to attention.

A four winged angel quickly descended through the nonexistent roof, landing gracefully in the circle and with a burst of speed she used her holy sword to carve the thing into four pieces. A pair of graceful slashes to be sure. Destruction of key evidence in all honesty.

“Inquisitors, what is the status of this mission?” The angel asked, eyes glowing white, and mouth open, barely moving.

Lilly the spider watched all of this from its newly found perch, it didn’t want to be near the angel. Marcus didn’t mind, he knew they unsettled her.

Decisions:
1. “Completely fucked”
2. “The town is a write off, seems we have a demon on the loose, odd none of the angels noticed anything.”
3. “We have a runner.”
4. “About twenty four dead, not terrible at all considering.”

“Completely fucked.” Marcus said, before being jabbed HARD in the ribs by Agatha. The woman looked furious at him. He’d known she was a hardliner when it came to angels but even then that was uncalled for. He supposed he could show a BIT more curtesy to the embodiment of white mana standing before them.

“Fine, ow. We have a runner, archangel. I believe the demon escaped heading west, if the trail of destruction leading out of town is to be believed. Kind of amazing the thing had enough time to wreak such havoc.”

“A few minutes is all it takes.” The angel responded. “Inquisitor Agatha, please continue.”

Giving him the cold shoulder? Must’ve upset her.

“The town is a write off, twenty four souls lost at least. We only found that many bodies. I’m assuming we’re dealing with a demonhost otherwise he would’ve been far easier for me to track. We wish to be given authorization to expand our se-“

“Denied.” The angel said plainly. “Please return to the capital and we shall both see to our duties.”

“One other thing.” Marcus said. “There seems to be something emanating from that busted out window up there. Can’t see anything with my mage sight, but my tracking spider very clearly picked something up from it.”

The angel quietly looked up for a moment, her blank expression turned to one of concern, maybe even fear, then once again became blank.

“Do not concern yourselves with matters out of your control.” The angel said cryptically. “Please return to your duties.”

That was the end of that conversation. The angel quickly departed, kicking up off the ground and rising up through the air, carried on a current of white mana.
>>
>>2531625

“What do you suppose that was about?” Marcus asked.

“We’d best not concern ourselves with things that are beyond the understanding of mere mortals.” Agatha responded.

“You realize what our jobs are right?” Marcus asked. Lilly descended from her perch and crawled back onto his shoulder.

“You know what I am saying, stop playing coy.” Agatha said.

“Fine. I just want to try looking for survivors a bit more, I cannot believe the demon just wiped EVERYTHING out.

“I’ve already explained, I’ve found NOTHING living in the village, I doubt it will even be reestablished. We’ve been given our orders, we’re returning to Celeste to give our report…. Everything is just coming undone now.”

“What a waste.” Marcus said, rubbing his head. “The whole fucking thing. How much time do you think we have left even?”

“The angels say everything is fine, why do you-“

“Look at what happened here, do you truly think everything is FINE?” Marcus asked. “Things have slowly been getting worse over the last three months, this is the third settlement in three months that has been wiped off the map.

“It is unusual… but not unheard of. We must hold our faith, do not sway now.” Agatha said, cold resolve in her voice. Marcus knew that tone well, it was how she spoke to heretics.

“Fine, forget it then.” Marcus said. “Stick to your damned dogma.”

“And stick to your heretical notions.” Agatha replied. “Faith has protected us for centuries, and it will protect us for centuries more.”

Kent had come to a crash landing near the coast. He’d been flying southwest the entire time. He’d unknowingly entered vampiric territory and had been shot down. Luckily he’d managed to protect his sole possession. But the girl was still not responding. She was very much alive but it was like there was nobody home. Kent could somewhat understand, but he needed to talk to someone, anyone. The demon had said NOTHING during the trip, outside of giving commands. He was terrified of his new form, and the loss of his very humanity. He felt he would lose his mind.

Where are we headed? Kent asked himself, or was it the demon? He was slowly losing track, the whole experience still felt surreal.

‘We were heading out of their territory, but it seems the vampires have… expanded.’

It… hurts…

‘Quit your whining, it’s only a few arrows. It could have been far worse.’

Will they find us?

‘They haven’t followed… so likely not. If they do you’re probably going to die. I can only aid your pathetic existence so much. But I’d use your feelings for that woman to keep going, I have the feeling she’d accept any offer I handed to her if our arrangement is… nullified.’

Kent stopped ‘talking’… thinking? He wasn’t really sure. He clutched at the three arrows that had planted themselves into him, one on his arm, one on his thigh, and one on his flank. They hurt horribly, but far less than he would’ve expected. He assumed that was the demon’s doing.

‘You’ll have to remove them, I can limit the amount of pain your mortal form receives but I cannot undo an infection. Such weakness…’

Kent wished the thing would just shut up. Half of him wanted to just end it but the pain from attempting so had been too sever to resist. He was trapped.

He plucked out the arrows one by one, screaming each time. It HURT. It HURT a lot. He had thoughts of just stealing the girls… vis? No.. those were the demons… hard to tell… He was bleeding now… his blood was a much MUCH darker red than he remembered, it was blacker now.

“Please wake up… Calea… don’t die on me here. I can’t…. I need to talk to someone… please.”

“Why did you kill them all?” Calea asked. “What has anyone ever done to you?” She wasn’t crying or sobbing, or even angry, she just stared at Kent blankly. As if she couldn’t feel anything any longer.

Decisions:
1. *You’re unable to say anything*
2. “I…. I’ve made a mistake, I’m trapped, help me.” ‘You want more help?’
3. “I… I have nothing else now…” ‘fool’
4. “You can leave if you want… I don’t want to hold you here.” ‘do you truly think you’re in a position to do that? Mortal?
5. “Do you want to die?” ‘hrmph.’

“Jealousy? What?” Calea asked.

“I didn’t want him to have you.” Kent finally admitted. He tried to keep Calea’s gaze but was unable to, his shame was too great.

‘Shame is for the weak and the meek, you did what you felt was right, that’s commendable.’ Req’wali stated. ‘It’s why I put up with you for so long, that and your plight was entirely amusing.’

Calea just stared at Kent for a long while. Kent could feel her gaze digging into him, worse than the arrows had. He tried to tend to his wounds but he was not nearly used to this new body he’d been given. Although his hands weren’t any bigger, the claws at the end of his fingertips made things difficult. He ignored the demon’s berating throughout this.

Then a pair of hands began to work at his wounds, cleaning them out and sewing them back up. Kent turned around to see Calea hard at work on him. He didn’t understand why, he… he’d just destroyed everything she had… and even now she showed him mercy?

“Why?” Kent asked, once she had finished.

“I don’t have a choice.” Calea replied. “Everyone I know is dead, because of you. I can’t run or I’ll more than likely die, I don’t know where I am. All I know is you haven’t killed me yet, and I hate you for it.”

“Hate… its fine, after what I did to you. Just don’t let it turn you into me.” Kent told the girl, plead to her really. He wouldn’t wish this on anyone, even Reli.

“You think I’ll just… forgive you for opening up…?” She asked, her façade of calm beginning to break down, the heartbreak and loss slowly creeping back up to the surface now that she finally had the time to catch up.

“Please, don’t leave… you can be rich… powerful… I… anything, please…” Kent said. He didn’t listen to the demon’s jolly laughter.

‘Taking after me are we?’

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP.

“You… could be my queen.” Kent finally said. Before hugging the girl tightly, initially she fought it, before giving in and just sobbing into Kent’s chest. She just kept going, it was all Kent could do to just hold her, he ran his hands down her back awkwardly, he just didn’t know what to do. His own emotional wall finally broke, and he sobbed in time with her.

“I… I don’t want to die.” The girl finally said.

‘No creature truly wants to die, no matter what they may tell you.’ Req’wali stated. Nonplussed by the display.

Kent continued to hold Calea as she began to settle down, her sobs dropping in intensity. She hugged him tightly. This moment was raw, uncontrolled.

Final Decision:

1. Say something to her (write in)
2. Say nothing

this is the set up to a totally healthy relationship I'm sure. But I am really enjoying the dynamic now.
>>
This quest is good shit.
>>
>>2534690
>2. Say nothing
Just hate ourselves even more as we realize that she'll die if she stays near us anyway. Then go to sleep and have horrible nightmares.

You've got a long, hard road ahead of you, Kent.

this is just a sidequest. The main quest is necromancer detective.
>>
>>2534767
does anyone have anything to add?

>She'll die if she stays near us

I'm just giving Kent something to lose.
>>
>>2534846
Oh, I know. It's more a matter of "when" than "if", anyways.

writing now. I'll keep refreshing to see if anyone else posts though!

Kent said nothing to the girl, he had nothing left to say, he just cradled her in his arms and held her close, being careful not to crush her by mistake with his newfound strength. He’d protect her, no matter what. He just couldn’t protect her from what he’d done.

They walked… a while, Kent lost track, and he didn’t grow very tired. He still viewed this arrangement as more of a curse than a gain by this point. He heard the demon say they wouldn’t have to ‘feed’ for a while. He didn’t want to destroy another village again, but the demon assured him that was just him ‘stretching his legs.’

He found a cave and set the now sleeping Calea down for a spell, he quickly built a fire, built a soft bed out of dry leaves, twigs, and moss. He used some logs to create a structure to raise it all off the ground, and then he laid Calea on top of it. He slept next to her, but with his back facing her. He didn’t deserve to be near her, but he still very much wanted to be. The newly formed wings folded up rather easily, allowing him to lay comfortably beside her. He would catch food tomorrow, and then they would go…?

‘I know where we’re going, do not be alarmed, and your female will not be harmed by me, as is our arrangement.’

You’ll just lie.

‘Perhaps, but perhaps I find some sick enjoyment out of watching you two lovebirds flounder about, the girl doesn’t look like she’ll last the night, anyways.’

Kent bolted up and looked to Calea, the girl was still freezing, her clothing not being made for the colder coastal climate. Kent himself hadn’t even noticed, another benefit of the agreement, again.

He quickly hugged the girl, holding her close to him. She unconsciously moved towards the large source of warmth that had just presented itself to her. But she was still shivering badly. Eventually Kent had a bright idea. He easily lifted her up for a moment and wrapped his wings around her, then set her back down, once again holding her close.

She had stopped shivering, and Kent finally found himself drifting off to sleep.

The demon had kept its end of the bargain, as any demon who writes a contract will.

The demon pondered this situation, he remembered his own time fighting for someone, so many centuries ago…. It had been millennia now… hadn’t it?

The “couple” was sleeping peacefully now, a sick and potentially abusive relationship suitable for a demonhost. The two would experience a lot of hardships, but Req’wali could only concern himself with his own survival. The only thing he could afford to care about was his own survival, and the boy was a useful tool in that respect.

He was far too weak to manifest for an extended period of time. Even at his full strength he would not be able to establish a permanent connection to this world on his own, only a select few among his kind could. He had the odds stacked against him, not even counting the angelic flight that was tracking them down. He figured an archangel would be leading it. He knew he was ‘small fry’ in the grand scheme of things. But he had pieced a few things together, the seraphs would be VERY busy over the next few months, if his guess was correct. He could slowly build his strength back up…

He would have to figure out how to play this, he needed the boy, but to control the boy he needed the girl… getting a cult together could… complicate things further. Perhaps further down the line? He’d need some way to secure sacrifices, otherwise his host would die, and he’d quickly be banished back to that chalice or worse. He had made sure Kent was still carrying the thing. As bad as it was it paled in comparison to the pit.

He quickly remembered a small saying that his king had said a long, long time ago, before they had fallen, before they had needed sacrifices to merely eke out survival. Before the angels had broken their promise, a promise born of five dead gods, now there was only one.

well boys, that about wraps this little sidquest up. I've learned a few painful lessons about railroading, and I'll try to structure these so I do not have to do as much to keep these in line with the main quest.

The four characters introduced, Calea, Kent, Agatha, and Marcus, will be making appearances in the main quest.

I might do a second sidequest with these two 'lovebirds' further down the line, lot of unresolved plot here.
>>
>>2535098
last bit of info, I'll be continuing the main quest on the 8th, in 2 days. I just need a bit of rest and some time to reread the latest arc to make sure I have everything down pat.

If you're new to the world of Necromancer Detective, welcome. Happy you stuck with the sidequest long enough to get to the end!

>As for my longer time readers, how'd you enjoy it? Besides the obvious railroad issues.

It was pretty cool, boss. I'm hoping that they'll show up as some sort of case the inquisitors'll give to us. I admit, I was kind of hoping that Celea would escape and swear vengeance on Kent and Req, turning into some sort of demon hunter for the Inquisition and eventually hunting down Henry and friends. Still, I had a good time.

Thanks for running! Night.
>>
>>2535204
Actually... lets just say the vampiric lords won't be too happy that some demonhost is attacking THEIR humans.

Maybe an entire multi case arc involving the vampires down the line, eh?

>Getting involved with vampire lords AND the Inquisition AND demons
>>
>>2535377
I have a good grouping of Case givers set up. Like hubs for cases. Things Henry can choose to do or not. The Inqusition and the four vampire families may compose some of those hubs. But do you really think those are the only games in town?

As for demons... usually they don't 'bunch up'. Prisoners dilemma becomes an issue when both parties can gain something screwing one another over.

>This is of course after we get to yorkshire and finished up the prologue already.

>I've come up with a fun idea for a case villain. A family living on the moor that abucts people to sacrifice to the patriarch's demon. Basically its a family ruled by a demonhost. Might be something I throw at you boys.

Say, speaking of cases, and since you've mentioned the implementation of a sanity meter thing, any chance we'll be getting any cases that'll involve creatures that'll be a bit more... non-euclidean in nature and form?

I plead the fifth.

Honestly OP, I did not like it. Not because it was bad. If there was no main quest and you had started with this, it would have been an interesting quest.
I was against it in the beginning and will always be against these kind of things in future. I dislike playable sidestories, PoV switches, flashbacks, flashforwards, flashsideways. People need to realize that quests are zero sum thing. If you go and run a side mission, we lose playtime of the main mission. This wouldn't be a problem if 95% of quests didn't die out (mostly because qms abandon them). I want to experience the main story as much as possible since I never expect an ending.
We lost about a week from main story, and for what? For half railroaded story which will have little to no effect on our main quest.

Op, here's a suggestion. If you want to tell us a separate story so that we may learn more about the world, just write it like a story. No need to make a quest out of it. It could be like an intermission between chapters or threads.
>>
>>2537306
Fair enough, you raise a lot of good points here
>>
Sides are interesting to "flesh out" the world. They are likely best done between main quest line segments. /Quest is very much more a story telling medium and thinking about elements cinematographically or in a novel context is valid. In The Lord of the Rings we get Gollum's story told a a condensed narration in the novels. It is not a new POV chapter. The other side story on the messenger was good. I read it after reading the first Necro quest before the current York quest.
>>
>>2538491
This is exactly right, although to add on, it helps me introduce characters naturally as well as lay groundwork for future cases

The main issue with this was the timing. Truth be told I use these as breaks to prevent burnout while also providing some content
>>
>>2538253
Personally I think it is better to run this as a side quest.

It lets people play as other characters, which in turns gives greater empathy and understanding of them. I find it's especially useful for determining deuteragonist backgrounds and motivations.

And like you said here >>2538502 it's helpful for preventing burn-out, which kills far more quests than anything else.

Something else I'd like to put out there is possible cross-over quests. Maybe not right now when the quest is just starting, but Magical Girl for Hire QM is currently doing one with Artificer Quest because he doesn't have time to run his quest full time.

So that might be an option.
>>
>>2539676
That's even worse. Please no crossovers
>>
>>2539676
If I do a crossover it wouldn’t be of NDQ

It’d be something completely new.

Honeslty though I just want to focus on the main quest for the time being
