It is the year 1960, and the world as we know it is changing! With the rise of terrifically powerful men and women across the nation, it seems clear that these super-powered individuals mean that our world will never be quite the same! With Superman in Metropolis, The Batman in Gotham, The Flash in Central City, and seemingly more and more of these powered individuals have been appearing all over the country. However, with heroes, there also come villains, and it seems the world has become increasingly more dangerous as insane criminals and alien conquerors threaten the safety of the Earth!

This is a quest set in the Pre-Crisis DC Universe, starting from the silver age. This quest will go through multiple different eras of comic books, where you will control multiple different characters based around the same "legacy", and your actions will have consequences echoing throughout the greater DC Universe as it advances. The biggest change to the universe is that the characters will age with the passage of time, rather than staying relatively stagnant.

Your name is Cole King. To most, you are a not particularly spectacular citizen of Echo City. However, most don’t know that although by day you may seem unassuming, Cole King is actually only your secret identity!

> Select your Origin Story!
> Born in the year 2960, a freak accident destroyed the machine you used to return to the past, trapping you 1000 years in the past! You decide to utilize your advanced futuristic technology to help the civilians of this past world as Mister Millennium!
> You are an archaeologist, and when studying the remnants of an ancient civilization, you found a mysterious glowing ruby, which embedded itself in your chest, granting you powerful magical powers! Now you battle the forces of evil as The Shaman!
> You were a journalist, writing a story to expose the most prolific mob boss in Echo City, but after your fiance was killed and the murderer got off free, you've trained yourself to no longer feel pain and go to the streets as Unbreakable Man!
> Originally a scientist experimenting with dangerous radioactive chemicals, a freak lab accident had you submerged in the very chemicals you were experimenting on. Miraculously, you survived, and have gained the ability to reshape your very body with your mind. You use these powers to battle evil as Everyman!

You awaken with a pounding headache and a burning pain on your chest. Sitting up, you press your hand to your chest to discover the ruby imbedded in your body is glowing hot, and you recoil from the heat. You returned from the expedition where you discovered this object a week ago, and since you've experienced strange dreams but nothing too unusual. Suddenly, the object seemed to be going haywire.

You force yourself out of bed, but the pain doesn't seem to go away, constantly hitting you and driving you to the edges of insanity! The ruby-- now illuminating your entire apartment in a bright red glow seems to almost be signalling you, shining in a pattern almost. You don't know what to do, all you know is that you must stop whatever is causing this, by any means necessary!

What do you do?

You focus on the flashing light from the ruby, trying desperately to decipher the what it's trying to say to you. As you focus on the pattern of the flashing light, the pain starts to fade away, and before long you find yourself no longer in your home!

Instead, you're standing in a wholly unfamiliar place. You look around to see a dark room, lit only by candles and you're standing in a large cage, seemingly created to hold human prisoners. However, you're not the only one in the cage. Sitting in the corner, you see a young woman, with brilliant blue eyes and pale blonde hair. She opens her eyes and glances up at you, before letting out a sigh of relief.

"Oh, thank heavens it worked!"

You're confused, but this woman looks distraught, and you've never been able to ignore the sight of a crying woman.

"Now, what on earth is happening here, are you alright?"

She nods, looking fearfully around the room. "Yes, for now... You aren't actually here, I simply tried to signal anyone that I could to help me. You're only here in spirit, that... thing in your chest... I've never seen anything like it before. The power is..."

She cuts herself off, looking back to your face.

"I'm sorry. I'm getting off topic! I need your help. A madman known as the Wizard has kidnapped me, and he wants to absorb my spirit energy! You musn't let that happen! Please!"

More tears start to well up in the woman's eyes as she begs you for help, and you consider her carefully. You're an archaeologist, not some sort of costumed adventurer! However, this ruby in your chest does seem to have granted you some powerful abilities, even beyond your understanding. Perhaps it would be a good idea to try to get more information out of this woman, since she seems to know more than you.

You nod, stroking your chin thoughtfully as you glance at the woman.

"Alright, I'll help. But first, I need to know where you are."

She nods, then steps close. "I can't tell you, but I can imprint my spirit onto you. Then you only need focus on me and you'll know exactly where I am."

With that, she presses her hand against your chest, and for a moment, you can almost swear she's actually touching you, despite knowing that in reality you're currently back in your home.

Suddenly, you hear a male voice echoing from another room, and the woman turns towards you fearfully.

"I'll see you when you arrive. Please hurry! I am depending on you, Shaman!"

Did she just call you Shaman? You're about to correct her and inform her that your name is Cole, when suddenly you're back in your home, the pain having faded away and the ruby's light dimming to be barely noticeable.

As you think about the girl, you get an image of a warehouse on the outskirts of town. It will take a while to drive there, so you'll have to think of another way to get there!

If this thing in your chest is so powerful, maybe it can help you out! You think of the things you've seen people do in comic books and stories.

> Try to fly to the warehouse.
> Attempt to open a gateway.

You start to think of the magic powers people displayed in the stories you read. You really weren't sure how any of this was supposed to work, but the more you imagined and pictured a portal forming, the image in your head starts to become reality, with a shimmering golden doorway appearing on what was previously an empty wall.

You're not exactly a fighter, but it seems you're the only person who can save this woman, so you don't have any other options.

You step through the gateway, and arrive inside the same dark room as before, although this time the cage you had been in was empty. You hear the sounds of an ominous chanting and can feel an intense energy coming from a hallway, so you quickly head down it, searching for any sign of the woman or the Wizard.

Finally, you enter a room, where every inch of the walls, ceiling and floor are covered in blood red sigils, and you see the woman you spoke to earlier chained up against the wall. Standing over her, you see a dastardly looking man dressed like a stage magician. His back is turned towards you and he seems to be chanting in some strange, unfamiliar language.

You need to act fast! What do you do!

You've never been one for dramatic stands, especially when people's lives are at stake, so you lunge at the Wizard, knocking him off his feet with one powerful blow to his head. The Wizard is staggered backwards and you can see hope appear in the woman's eyes, even though she's currently gagged.

The Wizard is knocked onto his feet, but he glares up at you, furious.

"Who dares interrupt my ritual?!"

He demands, and suddenly you realize you aren't wearing anything to protect your identity from this mad man, however as the thought occurs to you, you suddenly find yourself cloaked in a magic shroud which covers your face.

Suddenly, his eyes go wide, "That power... I thought the Ruby of Azarath was destroyed a long time ago!"

So this ruby has a name...

The Wizard stands up, brandishing his wand which glows with a magical energy. "No matter! I shall destroy you and take the power for myself!"

You start to come up with a plan, and as he gathers his energy and with a maniacal laugh, shoots a powerful purple beam directly at you, you invision the gateway you created earlier, placing it in between you and the spell, with the other side being right behind him.

The beam goes through the portal, but the Wizard saw your plan coming and was prepared to dodge out of the way of his own attack. The spell fizzles out and the Wizard laughs. "You are intelligent my friend! However, your tricks will never be enough to defeat a Master of Magick like myself!"

The blonde woman watches on, intently. You can tell she's trying desperately to say something, but the gag is keeping her from getting the words out! While The Wizard laughs and gloats, you realize he's left himself wide open for an attack from you!

You gather your thoughts and reach out to the furthest place you can possibly think of. You're sick of this dastardly heel and his arrogance! Your mind reaches a cold, desolate place, a world in which all creation is inherently wrong and twisted. Soon, a portal starts to form behind the Wizard, and you try to push him into it. The Wizard stares, both of you feeling immense horror just from being near a gateway to this place.

You don't know where you accessed, but it's a place no one should ever go. However, as you and the Wizard struggle, the man falls in, dragging you into this cold, desolate universe with him.

"You fool!"

He cries, as both of you tumble through the portal and land on the cold, rocky ground.

"This is a parallel universe but..."

The Wizard looks around, shocked and terrified.

"No, not a parallel universe! An antimatter universe! You've doomed us both!"

This... sounds bad. What do you do?

You open your mind and think about the woman. At least she's safe, even if you're trapped in some strange, bizarre dimension. However, strangely enough, you find your connection to her completely cut off. Similarly, you can't feel any power coming from your ruby.

"Magic doesn't work here, you know."

The Wizard speaks, his words slow, almost as if he's taunting you despite being trapped here with you.

"This is the Antimatter universe. All that exists is death. We won't last long, things from our multiverse aren't supposed to exist here."

Wait, did he just say multiverse? You thought the ruby was weird!

You need to explore, need to find some way off of this desolate wasteland. You certainly won't find your way home by standing around with this mad villain, so you decide to leave him behind. "You may wallow in despair all you'd like," you say to the Wizard, "I am going to find my way home!"

With that, you stride off, searching for an alternate way home. You're not sure how long you've been wandering, as the sky in this place seems to be permanently stuck in night.

You almost start to lose hope, only finding more of the same gray, cold wasteland. However, you suddenly hear a strange noise. Next, you're shocked to see a group of several objects, flying directly towards you. As they get closer, you realize the objects must be the inhabitants of this place, using some sort of flying machine. Maybe you could use that to get back?

When they see you, they seem to focus on you, divebombing and charging at your location. Well, they're certainly not friendly...

If only your ruby still worked! How do you want to fend off the inhabitants of the Antimatter universe?

>Congrats on the first good roll of the quest!

You easily overpower the impoverished alien creature, and you're grateful that even without the ruby's power, you can still hold your own in a tussle! With a swift boot to the gut, you send the alien careening down to the surface below, and you take a seat at the controls.

Although you can't read any of the language, and don't understand any of the symbols, the basic mechanics seemed to resemble that of a motorcycle! With that knowledge, you figure out how to pilot it pretty fast, but you're less experienced than your pursuers, and they swiftly start to gain on you!

You decide the best thing you can do is use their aggression and numbers against them! You quickly swerve back towards them, pulling sharp turns and maneuvering around to try to get them to crash into one another. The problem is you're less adept with these vehicles than they are, and they're able to outmaneuver you every chance they get!

As they get closer to you, they start to pull out what seem to be lightning bolts held in the palm of their hand! They hurl them at you, and while you're able to dodge most of them, a few manage to strike your vehicle!

Suddenly, the flying motorcycle starts to fall, the weapons enough to destroy the vehicle's power source. As you plummet, you see the aliens still pursuing you, seeming to want to make sure they destroy you!

You glance up at the aliens chasing after you, and one of them makes the mistake of getting too close to you! With a daring stunt, you leap from your plummetting hoverbike onto his, easily knocking him off while you do so.

You wrestle with the controls, managing to get out of the dangerous situation. Luckily for you, most of the other aliens were too far away to see as you took the other hoverbike, and they all continue to follow your falling vehicle, not paying much attention to you making your great escape!

Having managed to escape the aliens, you still don't have any way to escape, but suddenly, you hear a strange voice from behind you.

"Well, you're certainly lost, aren't you?"

You turn to see, floating in space behind you is a strange little man dressed in a colorful jumpsuit and with a tiny purple bowler hat atop his head. You narrow your eyes at him, and he laughs.

"Don't be mad, friend. This is your own doing. However, I can help you escape if you'd like."

You don't like this place, and you don't really trust magical floating imps that appear out of nowhere, but you also don't seem to have a vast wealth of options available to you.

You decide to...

"A tempting offer," you say, stroking your chin thoughtfully. "But, I'm not sure I should go anywhere with you. Especially as you haven't even so much as introduce yourself."

With a crooked grin, the imp nods. "My apologies! I figured you'd be more interested in escaping with your soul intact rather than pleasantries, but perhaps I misjudged you!"

He holds out a purple gloved hand, "I am Mr. Mxyzptlk of the Fifth Dimension!"

You blink. What on earth did he just say? Was that a name? He laughs at your reaction and you cringe. His laugh is a horrendously annoying noise that reminds you of something dying.

"Why would you help me?" you ask, trying not to show your aggravation on your face.

"Well, can't I just want to help someone?" he says, before breaking out into laughter again. "Fine, fine."

"The truth is, this has happened before. There are infinite Earths in our multiverse. According to what I've seen, you exist in a total of twelve. Many of which you perish in situations similar to this."

You blink. That... doesn't make any sense.

"I decided I wanted to see what would happen if something different happened here. In return, you will owe me a favor. I don't know what it is, but years from now, I will collect. Do we have an agreement?"

He's still holding his hand out. This all seems crazy, but today has only been getting crazier as it's gone on. You don't seem to have a wealth of options available to you, but you don't trust this imp!

Eventually, you make a decision and...
> Shake his hand.
> Refuse!
>>
> Shake his hand.

You reach out hesitantly. You don't like this, but you aren't exactly being presented with a wealth of options available to you. His grin seems to-- not widen, but rather curl inhumanly.

"Perfect." Mxyzptlk says coldly as the two of you shake hands. He closes his eyes and starts to hum quietly to himself, while you simply stare at him.

"You promised to send me home, imp." You say, glaring at the creature in front of you. He doesn't even react to you.

Then... you feel something approaching. Something masive, something poweful, something completely and truly wrong.

"Who are you that tresspass in my realm?"

When the figure speaks, his words shake the entirety of the Antimatter Universe. You even see, for a fraction of a second, fear across the face of Mxyzptlk. "Drat! He found us!" Mxyzptlk says, turning back to look at the massive figure slowly approaching you.

"Gnik Eloc!" He shouts, and suddenly, the Antimatter Universe fades away, and you're standing back in the warehouse. The feeling of the ruby's power activating is surprisingly comforting. Mysteriously though, the woman you were sent to rescue has vanished! At least the Wizard isn't a threat anymore.

This whole ordeal has tired you out, but too much has happened for you to just go rest. You need to find out more about... something here!

You decide the top of your priority list is to make sure that woman is still safe. Otherwise everything you just experienced was completely pointless. Not to mention, she seemed to know what she was talking about. Luckily, even with you spendin a bit in the Antimatter Universe, it seemed the spell she put on you is still active! You're able to envision her location easily, and at this point, you're able to make a portal there without any problems, although you were a bit nervous about ending up in the Antimatter Universe again, luckily it seems you instead ended up outside a large, secluded mansion outside Echo City.

You are immediately struck with how immensely powerful the magic in this area is. It's more powerful than the woman and the Wizard were... You're sure whoever lives here must be insanely powerful.

It might not be the best idea to just knock on the front door, although sometimes the most direct route is the best one.

Well, you were never one for subtlety, or a lack of action. Plus, you've found that the most direct path often works out the best for you.

You knock on the door, but you only need to wait, as if someone was standing right next to the door before you knocked. Looking up at you is a boy who couldn't be older than 15. He stares at you, looking you up and down, before he nods.

"Oh, it's you. The master's been waiting for you."

With that, the boy walks into the mansion, clearly expecting you to follow him. You're confused, but you decide to follow him anyways. It's not like you're not used to being confused at this point.

The teen-ager leads you through the impressive mansion, decorated with expensive, ancient looking objects, all of which seem to give off immense power. Whoever managed to get all these artifacts must be some powerful wizard.

Eventually, the boy stops in a room. "Take a seat." He says, stopping in the room. The room appears to be some sort of lavish study, with a warm fireplace, bookshelves covering almost every wall and the head of some strange mythical beast mounted above the fireplace.

You take a seat in one of the armchairs, and the boy simply... stares at you. Well, while you're waiting, you decide you might as well ask him some questions. Maybe he knows what's going on?
> "Who's your master?"

You're a bit unnerved as the boy never takes his gaze off of you. But, you have more pressing matters to attend to. You came here to find that woman, not to talk to whatever "master" he's referring to.

"Where's the woman I rescued?"

The boy shrugs, "You mean Rose? She should be with Violet and the Master... I think they're talking about what to do with you--" Suddenly, he cuts himself off. "I mean, they're... somewhere! I wasn't supposed to tell you that..." He tries to return to his mysterious guise, but it doesn't work. He blushes slightly, and now he avoids looking at you.

Eventually, the fireplace shimmers and fades away and a door stands in it's place! The door opens, and three figures walk into the room. You see the woman you rescued earlier, Rose, standing on one side of an older man dressed like a stage magician. Although your experiences with old men dressed as stage magicians haven't been great, this man doesn't look as evil or cruel as the Wizard. He must have been the source of the power you were sensing outside, being in the same room with him is somewhat overpowering, the ruby on your chest burning slightly as he gets closer. On the other side of the man is a young woman who looks to be about the same age as Rose, although with hair that seems completely dark, as opposed to Rose's nearly white blonde hair.

Rose gives you a small wave, and the magician regards you carefully.

"Nice to meet you, Cole. My name is Giovanni Zatarra, you've already met one of my students, Rose. This is Violet and Troy." He gestures to the other woman and the teen standing in the room. "I'm sure you have many questions, what would you like to ask, my boy?" You're getting tired of everyone around you knowing what's going on while you know nothing.

What do you want to ask?

"Well, I suppose most important-- What is the Ruby of Azarath?"

Everyone in the room seems shocked that you even knew the name of the ruby embedded in your chest, but Zatara seems impressed.

"Many centuries ago, there were a group of people that worshipped a mystical place known as Azarath. Supposedly, it was a realm outside reality, a utopia, and a place of great magical power. It is said that the Ruby of Azarath was forged in the fires of The Bleed and imbued with all the souls of the users of Azarath. It bestows great magical power onto it's user, who is known as The Shaman of Azarath! One day, all the worshippers of Azarath simply disappeared, and the Ruby was thought to be lost with them. The fact that you have it and are even able to use it without going mad is... quite frankly earth-shattering!"

A utopia, an ancient cult, and mysterious disappearances. This ruby might end up being more trouble than it's worth. On the other hand, the idea of great magical power sounds interesting, and you might even be able to help people with it! As you ponder the implications of this news, he speaks up again.

"The Shaman has a legacy of using his great powers to help those on Earth. I know this all must be a shock to you, usually the Shaman was taught of decades before given the Ruby. However, I consider myself a teacher of Magic, if you'd like, you could join my other students, and I could teach you what I know."

It's a tempting offer...

Before you can make a decision, Violet speaks up for the first time. "Master Zatara! There's something... powerful and evil attacking Echo City!"

Zatara looks over to the woman and nods. "Excellent timing, then. Cole, I know you must be tired, but I'm requesting your assistance dealing with this beast. I cannot leave this house, and neither Rose or Violet are trained in combat magic..."

Rose argues against the magician's decision, "Master Zatara, Cole doesn't have any training either!

The teenager, Troy, speaks up. "What about me? Why can't I go?"

"You're far too young Troy!" Rose says with a giggle, drawing a glare from the boy.

You decide...
