Last time, we:
>Met a tiny man.
>Remembered we brought our Big Iron along
>Freaked out about bad weather.
>Talked to a hot tree.
>Called a wolf goddess a doggo right to her face.
>And vowed to fight evil. For pleasure or profit remains to be seen.

The story so far: https://pastebin.com/EMTBCygv

“If you guys are done with your little show,” Issun’s squeaky voice cuts in. “Let’s get that fruit down like Sakuya-chan said and restore the village. This curse is really starting to get to me!”

Both you and Amaterasu look towards Issun, who is on the sun goddess’s shoulder, then up to the massive pink fruit. Immediately, a rather serious problem presents itself. How are you going to cut the huge thing down?

Just a cursory glance over the tree tells you climbing is out of the question. The tree is as big around as a small building and the bark is too smooth to grip. There are also no low hanging branches that one could grab to haul themselves higher. The pulsating and jerking the fruit does frequently makes shooting the stem a risky proposition. If you actually hit it…

You gulp heavily. If it really is filled with souls and you destroyed it…

You look over to Amaterasu, who is staring up into the bare tree with eyes narrowed. She probably came to the some conclusion as you. You look down and notice her tail and left hand twitching, like she intended to do something with both but can't follow through.

“Oh jeez…” Issun bounces off Amaterasu’s shoulder and bounds to the foot of the tree. “That thing is awful high up. How are we going to get it down? Anyone got any wolf or wierdo powers?”

“No powers here…” You say, not really sure how to help.

“Amaterasu-chan?” Issun asks, bounding back to her. “That’s a bit of a mouthful. How about I call you Ammy-chan? Any ideas?”

Amaterasu, or ‘Ammy’ smiles and lets out a wolfy chuff. “Ammy is fine with me. I do have an idea, but…” again, her left hand twitches. “The power I want to use… I seem to have forgotten it. 100 years of being a statue has put a terrible fog over my memory.”

She steps closer the the tree, but when she does, the base of the Konohana tree lights up a bright green and an arched doorway of bright light appears, as if leading into the tree itself.

As usual, Issun has an eloquent response. “I don’t think that trees are supposed to do that.”

Ammy, however, appears transfixed with the phenomena. “I...I’m not sure what this feeling is, but I’m sure that Sakuya intended for this to happen. This portal? This portal in the Konohana looks so strangely familiar. Even more strangely, it feels familiar.”

>”Well, what are we waiting for?” (Investigate the portal with Ammy and Issun)
>”I dunno. Maybe we should try something else before trusting a randomly appearing magic portal?”

”Well, what are we waiting for?” You ask with a shrug. “I’ve got some serious doubts that it could be any worse than what is going on out here.”

Ammy nods and cautiously steps forward, you following at her heels. As you walk, the light becomes more and more intense until it’s too much to look at. You have to hold an arm up in front of your eyes because the light pierces your eyelids easily. Right as you pass the threshold, the feeling of a cool spring breeze washes over your body, sending shivers up your spine as it rapidly cools your sweaty body. Finally, you come out the other side.

“Where are we? It got awfully quiet all of a sudden. Well, we better keep our eyes peeled.” Issun says.

You slowly open your eyes and blink away the spots in them to see just what he is talking about. When you finally do, you feel your jaw drop.

Above is an endless expanse of night sky, filled to the brim with bright, glittering stars. So many in fact, that there is no possible way that you could still be on earth. All around are what appears to be islands of grassy land seemingly suspended in midair. Looking down, you see that you, Ammy, and Issun are on one of the said islands. Over the edge of the small mass of land that you and your little party currently inhabit, there is nothing but a sheer drop into a bottomless pit of rolling blue clouds.

With a sigh, you steel yourself and push away the feelings of fright. You knew exactly what you were getting into when you said that you would follow Ammy.

Ammy’s golden eyes scan all around her with a curious gleam and her lips move as if she has something to say, but no sound comes out. After a moment she seems to gain her bearings. “I know what this place is, but the name simply will not come to me… it’s just as frustrating as you would think.”

“Maybe if we look around, it could jog your memory?” you suggest.

“Perhaps…”

Issun hops in place several times on Ammy’s shoulder. “Either way, nothing is getting done if we just stand here. There is plenty to explore and we’ve got a curse to break. Let’s hop to it!”

You, Ammy, and Issun continue onward. The floating mass of land is connected to several other masses via ornate wooden bridges that are easily large enough for a car to pass over them. As you walk, you feel the last bit of aches and pains from your literal fall into Nippon finally fadeaway.

On the third mass of floating land that you happen by, a curious shrine stands just near the next bridge. On the shrine itself is a mirror that shines with ethereal light, and the light itself shines down on a circular stone pedestal in front of the actual shrine.

“Hey!” Issun exclaims, bouncing off of Ammy’s shoulder and towards the strange mirror. “This is an Origin Mirror!”

Ammy brings her hand to her chin as she looks at the ground with an expression of deep thought. Meanwhile, you just give Issun a flat stare. “Yeah, I think we’re both kind of lost over here. Mind explaining?”

Issun’s aura flickers yellow for a moment and then back to green. “It’s an Origin Mirror. It said that using this mirror will allow you to store your memories inside of it for all eternity. On certain ones, you can teleport between them as well.”

“While the teleportation sounds useful,” Ammy begins, “I’m less sure on the ‘storing memories’ aspect,” she says, staring at the mirror for a few more seconds. “From the bits and pieces I remember, I don’t recall these mirrors ever having that particular effect. Are the mirrors common, Issun-san?”

“I wouldn’t call them common, but they are here and there,” the poncle answers. “And, well… you’re rights on that last part. Never seen it work myself. I’m not even sure what it means by storing memories. A lot of people just think it’s a good luck sort of thing.”

Ammy puts a delicate hand on her hip, her fingers rubbing a circle in her red obi. “Luck, what a fickle thing. The gods and spirits the govern it are just as unpredictable. I believe I’ll be passing on using them, least I tempt fate.” The goddess then looks at you. “What say you, Anon-san?”

>”I wouldn’t mind some good luck.” (Use the Mirror)
>”I don’t want to chance it either.” (Don’t use the Mirror)
>”Of the two of us, I think you might need it more than me.” (Try to convince Ammy to use the mirror, don’t use it yourself.)

You mull it over for a moment. While never particularly superstitious, you have no idea what you’re up against. Things like gods and spirits have already proven themselves to be real, so what’s to say that luck isn’t real as well?

”We’re up against some big odds it looks like. Some extra luck has to help,” you finally say, looking at Ammy. “It should only take a moment of our time, so why not?”

Ammy crosses her arms under bust and her tail flicks. “That is solid reasoning I suppose. Very well, I will go first to ensure that its not dangerous,” she says with a nod, stepping forward towards the Origin Mirror.

She steps onto the stone pedestal where the light from the mirror shines and seats herself in a traditional seiza style. She closes her eyes and let out a breath as the mirror flashes intensely for a split second. Afterward, she blinks as if bewildered and stands again. “What an odd sensation…”

“You’re telling me,” Issun says, still seated on the sun goddess’s shoulder. “I’ve never felt one do that before. Maybe it has something to do with the curse going on back through the portal?”

“Perhaps, Issun-san,” Ammy says, turning to you. “I don’t believe that anything ill has befallen us, so it’s your turn Anon-san.”

The goddess and poncle vacate the Origin Mirror and let you take their place. You try to imitate Ammy’s seiza only to realize how uncomfortable the position is. You ignore her quiet giggles as you shift around to get comfortable and close your eyes similar to how she did. ’So how is this supposed to-!’

Without any warning, your entire life flashes before your eyes as if someone mashed the fast-forward button so hard that it broke. From the foggy memories of your early childhood through your time at school and the time with your family and friends, you saw, heard, and felt all of it again. It only takes nanoseconds for a year to pass by. After what seemed like forever but in reality couldn’t have been longer than a split second, the demented film reel in your mind finally makes it up to today before suddenly cutting off and leaving nothing but white.
>>
>>2532003
A yelp forces its way out of your throat as you physically recoil back, as if struck by a sledgehammer. Before you can fall on the ground, a pair of slim arms, coated in impossibly soft skin and supported by muscle like steel cable, catch you.

“What the-!” Issun cries.

“Anon-san!” Ammy’s voice cuts through the fog that has settled over your mind. “Are you hurt?”

You blink the spots from your vision away and shake your head to clear your ears. “I’m fine, Ammy. I just… really did not expect that. If you guys can’t tell, I’m a little out of my depth here,” you say, extracting yourself from the slim arms holding you and standing.

Ammy’s eyes soften. “Anon-san… are you sure that you still want to journey with me? I am already aware that just asking you was inappropriate, and now I’m beginning to feel as if I unfairly pressured you earlier. You have no obligation to risk yourself.”

The genuine concern in both her eyes and her voice makes a comforting warmth bloom in your chest, but the Origin Mirror replayed both the visions of Amaterasu’s loss and the conviction of which you said you would help.

I’ll do it.

You’ve chosen your path.

“Amaterasu,” Ammy’s ears perk up at the usage of her full name. “I want to help you, and I already said I would. The mirror was a bit of a shock, but it’s nowhere near enough to scare me away,” you say, looking up into the star-laden abyss above you. Even now, the sheer unnaturalness of the sky here unnerves you slightly. “I’m not about to give up after the first bump in the road.”

Ammy blinks and even Issun has stilled on her shoulder. Then slowly, she smiles that smile, the one that steeled your conviction before.

You tighten a fist. How much you can help, you’re unsure, but you will give it your all.

Your reputation with Amaterasu increased!
Your reputation with Issun increased!

“Thank you, Anon-san,” she says, that smile still in place. “Your words mean a lot to me.”

With that little fiasco now behind you, your little party advances onward past the Origin Mirror. The next floating island of land presented a different sort of challenge.

Halfway across the little mass, a sheer cliff divided it into. The cliff itself was easily about 20 feet in height, maybe a little bit more. The rocky outcropping has few handholds and there is nothing to put under your feet in order to climb it.

Ammy, however, seems unperturbed by the obstacle. Rather than try and find a way around it, she instead runs at the rocky cliff in full tilt. Swift as the wind, her speed is easily superhuman and just as thrilling as it looks if Issun’s whoops are anything to go by. Only a scant few feet away, she makes a mighty leap that leaves indented footprints in the ground and shoots her just high enough to grab the edge of the cliff, where she pulls herself up the rest of the way.

That’s all fine and dandy for her, but how the hell are you going to get up?

Ammy looks back over the ledge and down at you. It takes her a moment to realize what the problem is, but when she does, her ears fold back. “Oh… I forgot that I was with a human for a moment… I apologize, Anon-san. Do you need help getting up?”

Critical Success! SP cost deduced to 2!

You click your tongue and shake your head. After your little speech earlier you’re not about to just give up here and ask to be literally carried. “Nah, I’ve got it.”

While the handholds are few and far between, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any and all. You take a breath and make a running start towards the cliff, pushing off against several lower outcroppings with your feet and utilizing all the momentum from your run. Once all that momentum is gone, you grip the nearest handhold and haul yourself higher with a grunt. The stone is rough on your hands, but you don’t let that deter you. With speed born of determination, you climb your way up the steep cliff face without falter. Finally nearing the top, you grip the edges and pull yourself the entire way up on shaking arms.

SP: 8/10

Both Ammy and Issun seem surprised by the feat. “You really weren’t joking when you said you wouldn’t give up at the first bump in the road, but I think that was a little more than a bump. Don’t overdo it, champ,” Issun says, his aura flickering in amusement.

Ammy just looks between you and Issun with upturned lips.

Your feat impressed Amaterasu! Your reputation with Amaterasu increased!
Your feat impressed Issun! Your reputation with Issun increased!
Issun now sees you as an Acquaintance!

“...And if it’s not one thing, it’s another.” Issun says, looking over the destroyed bridge that separates the ground under you from the next floating island. “Well, this shouldn’t be too hard. Listen, Either if you two ever heard of the spirits of the brush? Good brushwork has its own soul, 'least that's what they say. Just watch. It'd take all day to explain... A picture's worth a thousand words, right?”

Ammy’s eyes flash in remembrance when Issun says ‘spirits of the brush’. Like earlier, her left hand and tail twitch with half completed motions. “Spirits of the brush…Maybe… The Celestial Brush?” She murmurs almost too low to hear.

“Alrighty, here we go!” Issun pulls a tiny calligraphy brush from his person. What happens next, you’re not sure how to describe.

The entire world’s color bleeds away, replaced with the dark and textured appearance of parchment with only dark, inky outlines around objects, including the entire party. The broken bridge before you is suddenly covered in a watery black that ripples and writhes as if it were alive. An instant later, the blackness leaps away like water from a disturbed puddle and color returns to the world.

Where there once was a broken and useless bridge, there is now a whole and sturdy one. The wood even shines as if it were brand-new.

Despite what you’ve seen so far today, you still feel your jaw drop a little bit. To think that a little thing like Issun has such unreal power… “Unbelievable…”

The twitches in Ammy’s hand and tail grow.

Issun takes your disbelief as a complement, his green aura growing brighter. “Nice, huh? Just a little technique I've mastered called Rejuvenation. It's one of many brush techniques that use divine power. It's a brush god power that can restore broken or missing things. I've practiced really hard just to master this one technique. But there are 13! Each one is a power of one of the 13 brush gods. Originally, all 13 were a single powerful deity. When the deity died, its power was split into 13 separate gods. The gods now dwell within objects all around us. I wonder if there is anyone who could master them all?”

13 divine techniques that can bend reality to such a degree? Just the thought brings doubt to you that is difficult to chase away.
>>
>>2533018
Would it be bad taste to see if she can paint the Fat Man and Little Boy bombs into Okami?
>>
Somewhat difficult to do, ask the boar god.
>>
>>2533018
Luckily, a distraction from the thoughts comes in the form of moving forward across the now complete bridge.

As you walk across it, you purposely scuff a foot across it several times. Each time, the wood feels the same under your shoe and makes the same noise. No matter the force you put into it, the wood remains unyielding.

Issun it really did make a wooden bridge out of nothing, completely defying any rules saying that matter cannot be created from nothing. If that is just Issun’s power… then what sort of fantastical abilities must Amaterasu have?

The next little island is rather small, being just minimal land, a little hill leading upward past an arched gate, and what looks to be a little pond of shimmering water somehow floating over the edge of the land. Across from the little pond is yet another island, but there is no bridge connecting them.

Issun bounds off of Ammy’s shoulder towards a rocky monument near the foot of the hill. “River of the Heavens?” He reads off of the monument. “This can’t mean that little puddle over there, can it? It looks nothing like the fabled Stardust River!”

Now that you look at it again, the small pond does in fact glimmer like stardust, but is rather small to be called a river.

“Did something happen to it?” Ammy asks no one in particular as she too looks over the so-called Stardust River. “I don’t believe that it would receive such a marker without being more impressive.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone purposely messed up the stardust river. After the other wacky shit I’ve seen today, it’s just par for the course of that point,” you say with a sigh. “Maybe the hill will lead somewhere?”

Ammy giggles behind a hand at your crude, but apt observation and nods. She turns and makes for the hill, letting Issun jump back to her shoulder first.

At the very top of the hill, there is nothing worth noting, meaning that you are all at sort of a dead-end.

“Well, this sucks.”

Issun turns to you. “Aw come on! Look on the bright side, Literally. Look at the stars twinkle! haven't seen such a beautiful nighttime sky in ages. Hey, look! Are those stars forming a pattern, or is it just me?”

You squint upward along with Ammy, and sure enough there are several stars that stand out among the others and form a sort of serpentine pattern. However, there is a strangely dark spot near one end as if there was supposed to be something there.

“There is one missing,” Ammy says, bewildered. “How can a star be missing?”

“Guess I’ll just have to draw the missing star,” Issun says casually.

You feel your heart almost stop. Of all the unbelievable things you seem today, you simply can’t accept that. There is no way in hell that Issun has the ability to just create stars on a whim. Such an ability is…

Godlike.

Again, the color around you bleeds away to parchment and black outlines, and a dot even darker than the night sky appears where the missing star would go.

...Only to sputter out with no effect.

You let out a breath you didn’t even realize you were holding.

“Bah... Looks like I'm just not ready to draw missing stars,” Issun mumbles.

Ammy looks like she didn’t even hear. Her eyes are wide and unfocused as she stares up at the night sky. Then slowly, her tail lifts to her left side in her left hand dips a finger into the black tipped fur on the end of her tail. When she pulls the finger away, it’s coated in what looks like ink. She raises her left arm, and yet again color bleeds away to parchment. Again, a dot appears where the missing star should be. When color returns to the world, a bright and glittering star has taken the place of the dark spot in the sky.

“...Oh shit.”

The stars brighten to an impossible level, and at the same time the landscape around you seems to melt away into a golden field where you, Issun, and Ammy stand several thousand feet up in the air with nothing under you.

You yelp and fall to your behind, but don’t plummet to your death like you expected. Instead, it’s like there is a perfectly clear glass floor under you.

The constellation above shutters and shivers, then in a flash of multicolor light, and enormous, serpentine dragon bearing a color scheme similar to Ammy appears, flying around the group several times with a thunderous roar. It circles one final time and comes to a stop midair before Ammy, staring down at her with eyes of pitch black.

“Ah... Why, if it isn't mother Amaterasu. I apologize for not contacting you sooner during these long years. Having never forgotten you, I,Yomigami, god of restoration, have eagerly awaited this day when we could meet again,” the massive dragon rumbles in a voice so deep that your bones rattle. “While you were away, the 13 spirits of the brush that you once possessed, including myself, have been scattered across this land of men, and now lie in disarray. I became a constellation and managed to survive until now. The time has come for you to seek out and reunite all the techniques. Your power is what is needed to restore the dried riverbed of the heavens and renew the flow of stardust.”

Christ almighty this raises so many questions and answers practically none that you already had. Well, it did confirm some suspicions you had about Ammy’s power.

Yomigami’s eyes leave Ammy and fall upon you, making you freeze in place. “Ah, I see that you once again decided to involve mortals in your endeavors, mother Amaterasu,” he says, eyes narrowing. “I cannot say that I approve of such actions, considering the inconsistent assistance they provide.”

He did not.

You scowl and rise back your feet, cross your arms as you do so. “Big talk from someone who stood around idle for 100 years. Judge me if you want, I’ll prove you wrong.”

If Yomigami was offended by the retort, it didn’t show on his face.

“Anon-san, Yomigami-kun,”

Both you and the dragon turn towards Ammy, who looks between you with a frown. “There’s no need for hostilities between us, we are all friends and allies here,” she turns fully back to Yomigami. “Thank you, Yomigami-kun. It eases my heart that you and the others are okay. We will figure out and resolve the situation down on earth.” She says with emphasis on we.

Yomigami bows his head. “Of course. It is not my place to question you. Now, your power. I gladly return it to you.”

Yomigami’s form shrinks into a pulsating ball of light that shoots right for Ammy. The light phases into her body with a flash. Not a second afterward, the golden field all around dissipates, leaving you back on the hill where you all found the constellation.

“Wow! That was Yomigami, the god of Rejuvenation! Wait... So you have the power of Rejuvenation now? Can you really use it to restore the River of the Heavens?” Issun asks, hopping excitedly. “That’s crazy!”

You let out a breath and wipe your brow, your earlier nerve starting to fade. “Yeah… crazy is definitely the word I’d use for it.”

Ammy just stares at her left hand with a growing smile. “Well, let’s go try it out!” And with that, she takes off in the jog down the hill. Or at least what she would call a jog, since you’re forced to sprint to keep up.

The wolfy goddess stops just at the shore of the River of the Heavens, her left hand already dipped into the ink on the tip of her tail. She takes a deep breath and the world turns to parchment again. In a single swipe of her hand, the entire length between the shore and the next island is covered. Like with the bridge, the blackness explodes away with the sound of disturbed water, leaving behind an entire river of shimmering stardust.

“Whoa…” Issun mutters.

Ammy just grins widely.

Despite your astonishment, you can’t help but mirror the grin on Ammy’s face. It’s not every day you could see miracles right before your eyes.
>>
>>2533719
“Hang on, Issun!” Ammy cries as she runs towards the river.

“Wait, what?” is all the poncle has time to say.

She jumps easily 10 feet in the air at the shoreline, her body straightening out as she arcs forward into a perfect dive. She hits the stardust river with nary a splash, then surfacing a dozen or so feet away. “Come on, Anon-san! It’s similar to real water and we’ve got the other side to get to!”

Ugh. And the ache in your arms from climbing earlier just went away, too

To hell with this magic nonsense. It’s as interesting as can be when you can watch it, but being immersed in it? You’re getting across as quick as you can.

-2 SP
7/10SP

You get a running start similar to Ammy and dive in, shivering at the indescribably strange feeling of water-but-not-water running over your skin. You resurface as soon as you can and get moving, arms and legs pumping to keep you moving through the thin, almost gaseous liquid. You dare not swallow any of it, and you dare not look down through it where the river bottoms out into thin air. By the time you’re on the other side of the shore, Ammy is already standing out and waiting.

You pull yourself out of the divine river, and take a moment to catch your breath. The ache in your limbs is back, but not anywhere near as much as before.

“Some warning, next time?” Issun asks, his aura flickering red. “No wet, see-through clothes, but plenty of wet dog smell. Talk about a ripoff.”

Looking between you and Ammy, you see that Issun is right and that neither of you are actually wet. Crazy magic river...

Ammy just rolls her eyes at Issun’s complaints and beckons you onward.

The new island that you found yourself on dead ends, but at the end of it is a portal similar to the one you used to get to this strange place. Without words needing to be exchanged, you and Ammy walk through it, getting the same spring breeze affect as the light clears.

The portal spits you, her, and Issun out on a much larger mass this time. This time rather than being sparse planes, all around is a thickly wooded forest with a stone path leading up a hill. Near the top, it twists out of sight.
>>
>>2533918
With nowhere else to go, your little party follows the stone path up the hill. The entire place is still eerily quiet. With no animals to make noise, no wind to rustle the trees, and no sounds of civilization, it makes for an equal parts serene but unnerving backdrop.

At the bend in the path, it leads your group to the mouth of a large cave with what looks like a raised, wooden fence of wooden logs at the entrance. Off to the side is a small wooden sign.

Like with the River of the Heavens monument, Issun jumps forward to the sign. “Fountain of Nagi? Like the hero who killed Orochi?”

When Issun says ‘Orochi’, an image flashes through your mind.

With a body like a mountain and 8 heads mounted on necks the size of tree trunks, its blood-red eyes alone were said to curse anyone who gazed into them. No one dared disobey the horrific beast.

The image is followed by an absolutely deafening roar, like the one you heard by the Konohana tree.

It feels as if a lump of ice settles into your stomach. You vaguely recall bits and pieces of Amaterasu’s exploits from the waking dream. In several of the visions, she did battle with a monstrosity fitting that description.

But how, if it’s already dead?

“I wonder what this is doing here?” Issun says, neither he or Ammy noticing your inner turmoil.

“We can certainly find out,” Ammy says, already moving forward into the cave.

Issun bounces back up to her shoulder and you follow along, pushing away the thoughts of the eight headed monster.

The inside of the cave is a massive chamber holding an equally massive statue of a man raising a broken sword. His features are obscured by small chips, scratches, and coats of moss on his statue. The statue stands on a pedestal extending up from a pond in the center of the chamber. High above, the star-rich night sky is visible through an opening in the cave ceiling.

The instant that all three of you across the cave threshold, the massive wooden fence above the entryway groans and slowly shuffles to the ground, blocking the only exit.

“Well shit,” you begin with a frown. “I get the feeling that will take more than a little bit of time to bust through.”

“We might not need to break anything, Anon-san.” Ammy replies, her glowing eyes scanning the cave around her. “Let’s try to find another way out.”

You all advance further into the cave and closer to the statue.
>>
>>2534046
“Ouch. The statue has seen some better days,” Issun says, looking over the whole thing. “The broken sword in particular is kind of bugging me. No good swordsman should be without his sword!”

Ammy looks over the mighty stone visage of Nagi, her face wistful. “Nagi… this is really the least I can do,” she says, dipping her fingers in her ink-tipped tail.

The world flashes into a parchment color, ink coating the missing place on Nagi’s sword, and when the world regains color, the sword is repaired, showing it to be almost as big as Nagi himself.

“Nice going, Ammy,” you say with a smile, but a sudden light catches your attention. Looking up, you see more glimmering stars through the hole in the ceiling, and yet another dark spot where one was missing.

‘So soon?’ You wonder, bewildered. Yomigami said the brush gods were hidden away on earth, and this sure as hell isn’t earth.

Ammy doesn’t need any prompting, because the world flashes to parchment for a moment and back. The dark spot in the sky now has a bright start to go with the others.

Like last time, the surroundings bleed away into a golden field where everyone stands thousands of feet up, suspended by nothing. The constellation shutters and shivers, before yet another Brush God appears in a flash of light. This time it’s a… mouse with a sword?

“Tachigami…” Ammy murmurs.

The mouse draws its sword with its mouth, the dagger-like weapon suddenly growing to man sized proportions when it leaves the sheath at the mouse’s side. With impossible strength, the mouse flips the sword around with just a flick of its neck and drives it into the nonexistent ground like a comet striking the earth. The mouse, Tachigami, rests on the hilt of the sword and looks down upon Ammy with pitch black eyes.

“Well, well, well... If it isn't mother Amaterasu. It's been a long time. But with all these monsters around, the only place I could hide was in this shrine dedicated to ancient heroes. If there is anything I can do to assist you in your endeavors, I'm at your service. Make good use of this sword, as it was designed to conquer evil,” Tachigami says in a high, feminine voice.

Like last time, the god’s eyes turn to you, but she doesn’t say anything sans a short giggle.

Similar to her brother before her, Tachigami transforms into a ball of multicolor light and phases right into Ammy’s chest. Shortly after, the golden field fades away back into the cave.

As usual, Issun is the first one to comment. “Hey, that was the god, Tachigami, master of the Power Slash technique. Wait a minute. If you're getting all these powers... Then you're just like that Shiranui! You know, the wolf who fought and died alongside the great Nagi.”

Ammy lets out an almost unseen flinch at the mention of her death, and you have to resist the urge to pluck Issun off her shoulder and toss him into the cave pond.

“I know Sakuya-chan said ‘you may know her as Shiranui’ and all, but when you weren’t actually a wolf, a kind of threw me off…”

With a sigh, Ammy nods. “I am Shiranui, the name given to me by the villagers nearly a century ago…”

Issun seems to finally realize that he’s stepping into sensitive territory and doesn’t prod further. “Well, anyway, I've never seen this Power Slash technique myself. How 'bout showing your stuff off on that boulder over there?” he says, pointing towards a man sized boulder near the entrance of the cave. “Lemme see you slice it in half by drawing a single line! I won't believe it till I see it!”

The goddess nods, raising her ink dipped fingers. She swipes them to the side and parchment overtakes color for a split second. With the sound of ringing steel, the entire boulder is cut diagonally all the way through, letting the top half crash to the ground with a thunderous boom.

You walk up to the boulder and run a finger along the cut. ‘Its smooth as glass… can she do that with any sort of matter in her way?

“Wow! I didn't think you had it in ya, furball! I'm not even in the same league as you!” Issun gushes in excitement. “Guess I really overestimated myself... Hey, furball...Er... I mean, Amaterasu... I've made up my mind!” he declares. “If you're Shiranui reborn, then that means you can master all 13 techniques, right? In that case, I think I'll tag along until I'm as good as you! Lucky you! Heh heh... It's no use tryin' to change my mind. There's no stoppin' me once I've made a decision! But enough about me! Now that you've mastered the Power Slash, you can cut down that thing Sakuya was talking about. Let's go back and give it a shot!” he says, not letting Ammy get a word in edgewise.

“I guess that makes our little group official then,” you say, offering a smile.

Again, Ammy smiles that smile. “I guess it does.”

Your reputation with Amaterasu increased!
Your reputation with Issun increased!
Amaterasu now sees you as an Acquaintance!

With another slice of her finger, a Power Slash effortlessly carves through the fence blocking the cave entrance, letting you all leave the cave.

...But outside, something feels wrong. You can feel it in the pit of your stomach. You look over to Ammy, only to see her frozen up with her sharp teeth bared at nothing.

As screech rends the air, and a trio of green forms jump down from the trees, blocking the path down the hill.

“Imps!” Issun cries in alarm. “What are these guys doing here?!”

‘Imps?’ you think, panic starting to set in. You reach your hand into your over shirt, palming the grip of your revolver. ‘Like demons?’

The ugly, monkeylike monsters screech and holler, slowly moving in.

With Ammy to your right and the trio of imps in front of you, arranged in a loose backwards triangle, options run through your head with speed born of fear. The imps aren’t physically imposing, being lanky and a head and a half shorter than you, but the claws on the end of their grotesque hands and the wooden flutes they carry do. The flutes have to be more than they appear.

You pull your Super Redhawk from your over shirt and hold at low ready. The front two imps are about a dozen or so yards away while the third trails a little bit behind.

Shit, shit, shit! What do you do?!

(Combat: Inevitably, you and your party will be forced to pit themselves against opponents. Combat will continue until all combatants on one side are defeated or flee. Attacks are determined by a damage roll against a save roll. Dice rolls other than your own are hidden unless revealed by a skill or item. You may also strategize with your party, reposition to somewhere else on the field, use skills, or use items mid-combat. These actions can be done during attacks unless otherwise specified. Critical Failure!

You raise your gun in shaking hands, taking aim at the closest Imp, the front one on the left. Before anyone else can move, you squeeze the trigger and fire off your first shot.

The imp, however realized that that something was amiss when you lifted your gun and pointed it at it. It growls and sidesteps to the side just as you pull the trigger…

Critical Failure!

...Only to slip on a patch of moss under its foot. The demon flails and desperately tries to regain it’s balance, only to flinch at the thunderous boom of a 44 magnum and then stumble and scream bloody murder when the speeding bullet blasts through it’s shoulder.

1 damage

Ammy snaps out of whatever daze she was in at the guns loud report and rushes forward towards the imp on the right, the Divine Reflector that was hovering behind her now hovering before her hand, whirling like a flaming, demented buzz saw. The imp can barely muster a defense, frantically deflecting the first strike with its wooden flute only to open itself up to a pair of follow-up attacks. The demon screams like it’s brother when the reflector bashes into it with bone shattering force, the holy fire trailing it causing indescribable pain.

3 damage

The imp before Ammy screeches one last time before going limp and succumbing to it’s injuries. It falls to the ground and bursts into a cloud of foul-smelling ash.

The last imp, all the way near the back, seems to panic and brings it flute up to its lips. It takes a deep breath and blows through one end, sending a dart flying out towards Ammy. The sun goddess spots the attack midflight and gracefully twists out of the way, letting the dart hit a tree when it sizzles

The imp that you hit seems to be in too much pain to counter, instead howling and clutching at its shoulder.

You grit your teeth and curse your shaking hands. That shot was aimed squarely for its chest. You’re not going to make that mistake again. Taking a deep breath, you still your hands and calm yourself.

+1 to roll
Initiative lowered.

Ammy’s eyes follow your gun to your target, so she speeds off towards the imp in the very back, her long strides eating the distance with ease. This imp, learning from the mistakes of its brothers, already has its flute raised in defense when Ammy is upon it. It manages to deflect the first two strikes, but Ammy speeds up for the last strike, sending the reflector crashing painfully into its ribs. The imp lets out a wheezy cry, but manages to backpedal some.

1 damage

By now, the imp in your sights has had enough time to get it’s bearings back and looks up at you with what you’re sure would be hate if you could see under its paper mask. It drops its flute and rushes you with a screech, raising the clawed hand on his uninjured arm to attack.

But it simply can’t clear the distance in time. You glare at the monstrosity over the sights of your gun and pull the trigger in one smooth motion. Again, the gun lets out a deafening bang and a ball of fire from the muzzle. This time, impacts in the center of its chest with the crunch of bone and sloshing of liquefied organs.

2 damage

The imp is thrown to it’s back and can only gurgle before death takes it. Like the one Ammy dispatched, it burst into a plume of ash.

You push away the frayed nerves that come with actually killing something and focus on the final opponent

Now all that remains is the one further up the path that Ammy wounded.

The last demon is 15 or 16 yards away, still easily within handgun range. You swing the muzzle of your over around to take aim at it, only to realize that Ammy is there as well. It will take only one botched shot to hit her, and you’re not eager to find out if gods bleed.

“Ammy!” You call, making one of her ears flick towards you. “I’ll put it out of its misery! Back up!”

She nods, not taking her eyes off the imp, but before she jumps back she dips her fingers into her ink dipped tale and swipes at the imp. Said imp tries to dodge, but the Power Slash catches it right across the leg, severing the limb from the knee down.

1 damage

The imp can only wail miserably as it falls to the ground. And it’s about to be a lot more miserable.

With Ammy a safe distance away, you line the imp up with your sights.

The imp sees the hand cannon pointed at it, and urgently tries to drag itself away…

Critical Failure!

...Only to falter with a cough that stains its paper mask red.

BANG

4 damage
Overkill!

The imp’s entire head vanishes in an explosion of pink mist and bone shards. The body twitches before falling and going limp, dissolving into ashes.

And with that, all of them are gone

You let out a shaky sigh and holster your Redhawk. Now that the adrenaline is wearing off, your entire body is wracked by shivers. It takes a moment for it to fully sink in that those were real demons that you were fighting. One misstep could have led to your death.

Ammy walks up to you, her ears splayed back in her face full of concern. “Anon-san, are you alright?” she asks, gently taking your hands into hers. “You’re shaking.”

You try to study your breath and nod. “Yeah, I’m fine. That’s just the adrenaline wearing off. It will stop in a few minutes.”

With the demons gone, the surrounding area seems to light up a little more. The grass seems fuller, the trees seem healthier, and now there is actually wind blowing a sedate breeze through the area. All around the wooded area, tiny balls of multicolored light seep from the ground in trees and race towards you and Ammy. Before either of you can react, the balls of light phase into both you and her, leaving you feeling… empowered?

Issun pops out of Ammy’s hair, where he had hidden himself for the fight. “Wow! You two really get aggressive when you're mad, don't ya? Hey, you got yourself some Praise while you are at it.”

“...Though I’m not sure how Anon-san got some…” Issun continues on. “Ridding an area of monsters restores the gods' power to the land. People call it Divine Intervention. The more you restore the land to its natural beauty, the more Praise you'll get. It's the source of your power. Few people believe in gods these days, and that may weaken you, but if you try real hard, your true power just might shine through!”

You look down at your hands, only half listening to Issun. The added strength isn’t much, but it’s still there. It’s honestly sort of a relief, that you don’t have to fight the great and terrible beings as just a plain old human… But it does make you wonder. Once all is said and done, will you still be you? Already, you feel a strange awareness of your own body.

“Anyway, onto the next order of business.” Issun says, bouncing all the way from Ammy’s shoulder to yours. “What in the world was that thing you use to blow away the imps?! It looked like a gun, but I’ve never seen one that can fire over and over. Usually they are in the hands of nobles too, and you don’t look like a noble.”

“Erm…” you slowly reach into your shirt and pull out the Super Redhawk, letting a bewildered Ammy and Issun see it.

But only go into detail if they press the issue and even then explain it in simple terminology that they might understand.

>Simple Explanation.
Keep it short and sweet. While we're at it, we could also ask about getting more ammo somehow.

“Well, let me start off with a question of my own. The pistols that the nobles own, what are they called?”

“They’re called match… match something,” Issun stops to think for himself for a moment. “Oh yeah! They’re called matchlocks!”

Matchlocks, huh? That gives you a rough idea of where you are in history. You open the cylinder on your revolver and push the rounds up just enough that you can pull the spent ones out. You show one of the casings to Issun and Ammy, the latter of whom scrunches her nose at the smell.

“So it IS a gun, but this one is called a revolver because of the cylinder here that revolves as it’s fired,” you say, slowly rotating said cylinder with the empty casing in your hand. “And rather than needing me to stuff powder and ball down the barrel after each shot, the bullet and the powder are both held by this brass case that goes in the cylinder. Every time I pull the trigger, the cylinder rotates and punches an impact sensitive explosive on the back of the case-” you flip the casing around to show them the dented primer “-igniting the powder and firing the gun,” you say, hoping you didn’t lose them.

Ammy doesn’t seem to quite get it, but just nods in acceptance. Issun, on the other hand…

“That… That’s genius!” Issun says. “Who came up with such a thing? They have to be rolling in money by now.”

You shrug, not really sure who came up with the idea of revolvers. “Beats me,” you say reaching into the other side of your over shirt for a speed loader before a thought suddenly comes to you. “Hey, Ammy? Can you try something for me?”

She smiles and nods. “Of course. What do you need?”

If this works, you are going to shit a brick. “Can you try your Rejuvenation power on these spent casings?” you ask, holding the gleaming brass up to her.

She blinks her golden eyes at the unusual request, but dips her fingers into her tail. Raising her hand, the world flashes to parchment and back, the blackness around the casings in your hand leaping away…

…to reveal a trio of unfired 44 magnum rounds.

Holy shit. Being friends with a goddess is awesome.
>>
>>2538389
So how far can you push rejuvenation?

Can you cut down the same tree an unlimited number of times?

Mine the same ore veins?

What is this bull shit?
>>
>>2538389
Thank goodness we won't lose our gun that quickly at least. Now we just need to make sure we don't lose any of the casings.
>>
>>2538389
It's official. Ammy has won me over as best Waifu without even needing to do Waifu related shit.
>>
>>2538389
Now, if you ever lost any of the casings then you are probably good and boned, and you doubt that Ammy could spare the time to restore your ammo mid-fight, but as long as you don’t run into anything that can tank repeated shots from a hand cannon and keep a tight grip on your spent ammo, then you might be able to fight from a distance consistently.

You grin and put the ammo, which practically looks factory new, back into the cylinder before you holster the gun again.

Ammy blinks, watching as you put the gleaming revolver away before she smiles and lets out a wolfy chuff. “Very clever, Anon-san. Very clever.”

Your wit impressed Amaterasu! Your reputation with Amaterasu increased!

“I think that was sort of the logical conclusion there, furball,” Issun says, hopping back to her shoulder from yours. “Those ‘casing’ things don’t look like anything a common village blacksmith can make.”

Ammy rolls her eyes. “Is it safe to assume that you thought of such a thing immediately, Issun-san?”

“Erm… not r- I mean, of course!”

The goddess lets out a another amused chuff.

The little party searches around the battlefield for a moment. In the ashes of the Imps were several coins, totaling up to a paltry 3500 Yen. In the one you searched, the bullet that you expected in there was strangely absent.

“It’s not much, but I suppose we’re not totally broke,” Issun says, looking at the small handful of yen you and Ammy managed to recover.

“This money was on the demons, though,” Ammy says with a frown. “Should we not return it to the original owners? I doubt that this was acquired through honorable means.”

You snort. “Good luck tracking down whoever this belonged to. It’s not like there are any names written down on these, and if you ask anybody if they are missing money then nine times out of ten they will say yes just to see what they get.”

Ammy’s frown doesn’t dissipate, but she accepts the coins that you hand her and puts the entire handful away in her kimono. “We’ll use it wisely so that none can say that their money isn’t being put to good use.”

Now you all just need to return back through the portal and cut down Sakuya’s fruit. With Ammy’s new Power Slash, it should be simple.

With everything sorted out for now, your little party begins the walk back to the Konohana tree portal.

“So the thing with the Praise,” you start, stretching your arms before folding them behind your head as you walk. “Does that make me a God, or something?”

“Pffft,” Issun says. “Try or something. You don’t have to be a God to use Praise, but they are the only ones who can use it naturally. Spiritually aware people, people acting on behalf of gods, or especially powerful creatures can use it with some training. You don’t fall into any of those categories so it’s kind of strange.”

Ammy nods in agreement with the explanation. “If you were divine or something else, I would be able to feel it no matter how convincing a human guise you wear. For some reason, you give off the feeling of a normal man. Your ability to see my godly features and resist the curse over Kamiki is unprecedented, really,” she says with an ear twitch. “You are a very curious man, Anon-san.”

Do look forward and mull over their words. ”What does being a goddess mean to you, Ammy?”

She blinks. “Pardon?”

“What does it mean to be a goddess?” You repeat yourself.

“There is very little to it, quite honestly,” she says, raising one arm to rub the other. “I, like every other divine being, was born of human hope, prayer and reverence for my aspect, the sun. A being like them, but much grander in power. Many of my memories are still unclear, but I recall long periods of time watching the earth from the heavens, only descending when needed. The last time was with Nagi and Orochi…before that, I recall there being others with me, but then they vanished. I simply cannot remember further back.”

Ammy looks away, her eyes facing the ground becoming unfocused. The hand that she brought up to rub the other arm clenches and loosens repeatedly on the sleeve of her kimono.

A being like them, but much grander in power

Like a human, but simply more powerful? And she simply spent her time watching Earth? She couldn’t have been completely idle during that time, could she? You’re scared to ask a more burning question you have.

Were you alone during that time?

You remember the Brush Gods, but supposedly there are only 13 of them. To have contact with only the same 13 beings for who knows how long...

As fast as she looks away, Ammy snaps out of it and turns to face you with a smile. “Mou, here I am going on and on about myself when I barely know anything about you, Anon-san.”

Before you can answer, you, Ammy, and Issun are already at the portal out of the wooded lands. The three of you cross back to the river of heavens and the sparse floating islands.

Yeah this sounds like a question we should ask her while Issun is not around considering that it is a very potentially sensitive topic to bring up.
