You are a young child. Your parents are out hunting with the rest of the tribes hunters.
In the meantime, you have managed to procure a piece of papyrus and a stick of charcoal. You intend to entertain yourself with these things for a bit, and draw a picture.
...Your having trouble picking what to draw. You keep trying to picture what you want to make, but you seem to be developing a rather nasty headache, and it's making you have trouble concentrating.

Ugh. Actually, your head REALLY hurts.
...
Your Your head head really really--

You force yourself to focus. Your vision is blurry. You're having trouble blinking correctly, like you can't quite control one of your eyelids.
You don't really know if you can draw like this... Should you go talk to the village shaman? They might have a remedy... But they're really creepy.

Well, regardless, what were you about to draw?
Also, what is your name?
And finally, how would you describe your personality?

Author's note: This quest will be utilizing a rather odd gimmick. To my knowledge, nobody has used a gimmick such as this in a quest, much less myself, so I ask that you all be patient with any oddities as I try to get this stupid and convoluted idea to work. On top of this, please note that due to the nature of this gimmick, and my naturally slow writing and drawing pace, this story will have a very random and inconsistent update schedule. The art, likewise, will probably vary widely in quality.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of this gimmick, I feel it would best to keep it secret for as long as possible.

Don't worry too hard about it for now.

What... Date is it?

Your not sure you entirely understand the question.

Well, there's a calendar. I guess it's the ancient era.

>Well, regardless, what were you about to draw?
>You are a young child. Your parents are out hunting with the rest of the tribes hunters.
I guess what we imagine our parents would be doing.
>Also, what is your name?
How long should the name be?
>And finally, how would you describe your personality?
[insufficient memory]
>>

>Should you go talk to the village shaman?
Probably for the best. No matter how creepy they are, if this headache gets much worse, you'll probably end up seeing them anyway.

>Well, regardless, what were you about to draw?
Our parents hunting their last catch! It always seems to make them a little happy whenever you do anything like that.

>Also, what is your name?
"Saras." Naturally, we haven't earned any titles or epithets.

>And finally, how would you describe your personality?
"I, uh, I don't know. Maybe you should ask my parents? They might know better."
Filial and loyal. Somewhat naive. Inquisitive. Sometime a little daring, but not terribly often.

Your name is Saras.
Funny, you don't actually remember being called that at any point? In fact, as far as you were aware, your name was "child" or "young one" or "unsplit" or other variations of that.

But now your name is Saras. You are 100% certain of that. Your personality is that of a somewhat ordinary child. You love your parents, you're somewhat naive, and quite curious.

The curiosity that you're currently dealing with is why your head FEELS LIKE IT'S ON FIRE.

You realize that yes, heading to the shaman would have been a very good idea. But now your not really sure you could make it that far without passing out.

In your panic, you do the first thing that comes naturally to you. It feels like instinct, really.

You slam your face against the stone wall as hard as you can. Repeatedly. For like a full five minutes. You feel your muscles locking up weirdly, like they're trying to resist? It's weird.

Your head stops making a banging sound against the wall, and makes more of a cracking noise. Huh, you managed to break the hard shell that surrounds your head it would seem. Oh look, a piece of it fell to the ground...

You think you recall something one of your parents told you. Something about your shell breaking meaning that your growing up? You don't know.

What you do know is that the pain is a lot less intense now. Huh.
You keep bashing until your shell has mostly fallen off. You peel the remaining pieces off with your hand-
Hoof?
Your left hand is a hoof. Why? Why???
You look down at yourself.

Your body is normal on one half. The same sort of pale-green skin that, okay actually you don't really remember what your supposed to look like? All you know is that the right half of you is fine.

The left half is not.

The left half of your body has been overtaken by brown and white fur. Your left hand and leg now end in hooves.

You don't know what to make of this.

Just then, one of your parents walks in. A majestic purple elk beast. They stare at you, mouth agape.

How do you explain this? What do you say to them?
>>
>>2572909
>"Dad? Mom? What's happening to me?"
There's nothing to explain when we have no idea what the fuck is happening. Given our recalling them mentioning things that seem to make some sense of the situation, it seems reasonable to seek an explanation from them instead.
>>
>>2572932
You begin crying and freaking out.
Mind you, this isn't what you intended to do per-say. In fact, your feeling kinda calm about this.

You note that only your left eye is crying.
Also, is someone else also freaking out? Because you hear screaming. Close by. But you and your dad are the only ones in the room? And your dad has broken out into a wide grin. So your not really sure where that noise is coming from?

"What's happening to me?!" you cry out.

"Huh?" Says the voice that was previously screaming.
Wait, did you say that?

"What?" You say in response.

"What the hell!" yells the voice. And actually, now that your paying closer attention, yes you definitely said that. Out of your other mouth. That you are just now realizing you have.
You begin yelling in panic, and fall over on your ass. Or rather, you would have, if your legs hadn't suddenly locked up and kept you from falling.

It's at this point that your dad stops smiling like a dope, and finally comes over towards you. Both your mouths are freaking out and both your eyes are crying now. Symmetry for the win!

Your dad sits you down on the bed. The soft furs against your skin comforts you. Sort of. The fact that the other half of your body is already covered in fur makes for an odd combo of sensations.

"Okay girls, listen up." Begins your dad. "So, some of this you probably have already figured out, but you have finally undergone The Split."

Oh.
OH!
OH OH OH!
Okay this makes sense now.

You finally remember what your mom told you all that time ago. The split...
Every child looks forward to the day of The Split- The day that you finally get to go on hunting parties, or work in one of the crafting shops, or begin shaman training, or all the other cool things adults are allowed to do!

There's more to it then that though. You always zoned out when people talked about the other aspects of The Split. You regret that a bit now. Your father has to fill you in on quite a bit.
The split happens randomly. A unsplit gets a headache one day, and begins instinctively removing their shell. As they do this, their body morphs to reflect their true selves.
Partially.
The other half of their body, on the other hand...

Well, basically, the brain splits in two during the split.
The other person is your "sibling". In this case a "sister" apparently, due to you both being girls. But of course, you don't have to put up with her forever. On the day of the solar eclipse, you and her will stand before the village elders, and argue. You will argue for your very existence. For every ideal you represent, for every virtue you hold, for every use of your form.
The elders then pick a favorite. The losers hold over their mind will then be weakened, allowing the winner to easily, and permanently, gain control over their mind.

You are still trying to comprehend exactly what your dad is saying, when your... uh... sister starts talking.

"So the the loser dies then?"

...An awkward silence ensues.

...Surely that can't be true! Obviously you don't have any chance of dying, right?

Your dad looks uncomfortable.
He then tells you that it's customary for the new siblings to spend some time alone, and get used to each other. He says to come out when dinner is ready. He leaves the room.

...

"So! My name is Saras!" You say.
"...I'm Impala." She responds.
...

Okay, so, you guess you should talk to her?
What do you say?

"So what's with the fur?" You ask, failing to keep the destain out of your voice.

"What do you mean? Do you not like it?" She says, seemingly having the gall to actually be offended by your perfectly reasonable question.

"No." You respond.

"I, ah, I see. Well, what do you like?"

"Oh!" You exclaim. "I like drawing, and mom and dad, and I bet I'm gonna love hunting, and- um... That's it! I think." Huh, you ran out of things to say fast.

"I uh, like your form!" She begins. "The pale green, uh, skin is really... uh..."

You wait for her to finish the sentence, your patience rapidly wearing thin.
"It, uh, reminds me of grass?"

Well, you do like grass. Though, personally, you don't think your skin is really that color. It's more the shade of... clovers, you think.
God, you love clovers. You smile to yourself. You bet your full true form involves clovers somehow!

The conversation comes to an awkward silence. You don't really know what to say now?

...Maybe you should just go see if dinner is ready yet.

What will you do?
And what are your thoughts on your sister so far? What attitude will you take with her in future conversations?

Heh.

>>2574700
>Go check if dinner is ready, ask Dad if there have ever been cases where the Split just continued to cohabitate.
I mean I don't want her to die.
>Attitude and on the sister.
She seems alright, given that she's existed for 6 hours.

Hm... Yeah, you need to talk to your dad more about this.
You go to stand up- and your legs lock up.

"Hey, what the heck! Let me move!"

"But where are you taking us?" Asks your sister, her voice oddly panicked.

"Dinner, and to talk to dad. "

"About what?"

"Well I was going to ask how we can just stay in the same body. "

She pauses for a moment.

"Oh thank goodness. For a moment I was worried I would have to convince you that was the way to go."

She smiles widely.

"Oh thank goodness. For a moment I was worried I would have to convince you that was the way to go." She explains. "However, I doubt that it's going to be that easy. If it were, dad would have just told us how, rather than doing all this. It is likely that sticking together is against some kind of rule, or drives us insane after a while, or something like that. "

"WHAT?!" You shriek. "W-B-Wh-whaaat? No way that's true!"

"Then why did dad make it into this sadistic senario?"

"I don't know, but we can ask him!"

And with that, you begin walking again. You need to get to your dad. This is a misunderstanding for sure! She'll see!

You exit your family cave, and trudge over to the center of the village. You scan the crowd. People of all shapes and sizes walk about, some cooking, some cleaning the animal carcases, and so on.

You ignore them, trying to find your dad, or heck, even your mom.

Aha! There he is. You see his antlers peeking up over the pile of fresh prey.

You run over to him. It seems he's talking to one of the elders. Blade, you think their name was? Their entire body is made of interlocking blades, shifting and swiveling constantly, yet somehow not making noise.

So freaking cool.

But not who your here for. You run over to your dad.

"Oh, Hello Impala, Saras." Says the elder as he notices you. "What do you need young one?"

"I want to talk to my dad."

You turn to face your him.

"So hey, how do we get out of doing the ritual thing?"
"Assuming we can?" Chimes in your sister.

...

"Get out of? Oh dears, that's simply impossible."

"But-" You say.
"But-" Your sister says.

Your dad cuts you both off. "Why would you want to anyway?"

"Is that even a real question?" Says someone. It takes you a moment to realize it's Impala. Her voice is different when she's angry... "I can't believe this. You want us to basically kill each other. Of course we want no part in that. "

Your dad seems shocked.

"But- don't you hate each other?"

...What?

"No?" You try.

...

"Oh, I see." Says your sister, now much more calm. "So I suppose this practice originated from the two halfs not normally getting along then? Well, as you can see, that isn't a problem for us. "

"Give it time." Blade says grimly.

"So it's inevitable then? Impala continues.

Blade nods his head solemnly.

You gasp. Oh no. You don't want to wind up hating your sister! Oh no oh no...

"I don't believe you. " Impala states.

...Huh?

"Of course you would say that. It only helps you elders, right? Being able to exterminate the half of the population least useful to you. "

"That isn't true-"

"Prove it then. If me and my sister can get along, then let us skip the ceremony. "

A thick silence hangs in the air, as the elder considers your sisters words. Your father looks aghast at her behavior, but says nothing.

"...Well? "
Blade continues to say nothing.

"Please? " you chime in.

"...Fine. You will fail, as many others have failed before you. But fine. "

Your sister's face contorts in shock, and yours in joy.

The dinner bell rings.

The elder walks off, seemingly done with the conversation. Your dad appears dumbfounded.

"I didn't think that would work..." Whispers your sister.

She takes control, and slowly trudges over to the food table.

Eating is shockingly fun, you find yourself able to eat easily with only one hand, and the sensation of taste is magnified due to tasting with two tongues.

You go to bed.
