/qst/ - Quests

Your name is Kurt Vander, and you are a Fist Wizard.

It isn't the official name given to mages such as yourself; the official designation for a practitioner of such a peculiar magic style differs from region to region. Kinetomancer, Warrior Monk, Ki/Chi User. Fist Wizard is the title you so think fits your personal style of magic best. But regardless of the name, every mage who wields magic with their bare fists share one thing in common.

You all fight with your fists.

And your fists are sometimes magical.

Through this union of might and magic, you have achieved many grand feats. You’ve outrun magical horses, broke enchanted weapons, wrestled fantastical beasts, and saved your hometown from an annoying goblin infestation.

Such was the praise that you earned from your deeds that you have been invited to the Imperial College for Magic and Higher Learning; a prestigious institute where budding spellcasters and scholars from across the length and breadth of the Vermillion Empire come to hone their craft. Hearing the news, your hometown threw a party to celebrate your success before ushering you out with their best wishes.

Lacking anything better to do, you accepted.

With this, you can hopefully gain a better understanding of your powers beyond ‘channel magic’ and ‘hitting things really hard’.

You arrive at the Imperial capitol of Vermilla after a half-day long airship flight. The city is vast and possesses high walls near it's northern-most side, where the home of the royal family is located. The whole place sparkles like a jewel in the light of the setting sun.

You disembark alongside the rest of your fellow passengers and stretch your limbs to shake off the fatigue of a long flight.

It’s been a while since you set foot in the capital. The last time you were here was roughly four years ago, on your seventeenth birthday.

You note that not much has changed; a few stores have changed hands and the trees look much smaller than you remember, but everything else remains roughly the same as you saw it. The nearby marketplace still bustles with activity, the dockhands unload cargo with their cranes and levitation spells, children play in the streets, and the bird chirp in the sky overhead.

You pull out your invitation letter and look over the details. There should be a welcoming party here to greet new arrivals, visible by the academy banner they’ll be waving over their heads. So far, there doesn’t seem to be any group of people that fit the one described in the letter…

...Which means you'll have to start looking for them.

You haul your belongings over your shoulder and crouch, gathering strength in your legs. In one great bound, you clear the surrounding buildings to land on the front-most edge of an airship's main blimp with nary a sound. There, you set your things down and sit.

You focus magic into your eyes and your vision sharpens, everything you coming to you in crystal clear detail. A slight flex of your magic enables your vision to zoom in and out, making everything easier to recognize without physically exerting yourself. The perks of magic are as many as they are amazing, to one who know what they're doing.

From your high perch, you start looking; scanning the airship port for anyone with the Imperial College insignia on their person or hauling an object with said insignia. The tedious process is time consuming, but a necessary undertaking.

Eventually you find them, nestled a fair distance from the airship docks and tucked around a corner. They are a small crowd in total, comprised mostly of young women and a handful of men, led by people dressed in the college uniforms.
>>
You grin and grab your things, gathering strength in your legs for another great bound.

You leap, sending the airship lurching downwards under the force your legs kicking, and soar through the skies like an enormous and heavily muscled bird. You fall like a meteorite and hit the ground hard enough to shake it, yet your remain unhurt.

You stand and put your hands on your waist as your fellow future students gape at your abrupt entrance.

"Greetings friends!" you bellow with a slight laugh. "I am Kurt Vander, Fist Wizard! It is a gre pleasure to meet you all on this fine evening!"

One of them musters a weak 'hello', which is good enough for you!
>>
"...Holy shit dude, what an entrance." one of the college clothed people breathe, clearly amazed. "Welcome to the capitol man. I'm Joshua Winchester, third semester student and your facilitator for tonight."

"A pleasure, sir Winchester." you stick out a hand and her takes it in a firm shake. You not how small his hand is compared to yours.

"Please, just Joshua's fine. No need for that formal crap." he grins back at you. "How was your flight over?"

"Long, tiring, and very unproductive." you grouse. "The flight staff wouldn't even let me work out on the craft! Can you believe that?"

"I'm sure they have very good reasons for not letting you pump form iron, big guy." he hands you a clipboard. "Jot your name down here real quick; wouldn't want to lose any of you when you're all still new here, right?"

You do so with a flourish of your hand and feel mana settle around your right wrist like a bangle, with tethers linking it to the clipboard. It must be enchanted with some sort of spell that lets whomever's holding it track the people whose names are on the clipboard. A useful item for the current situation you are in.

"And that's thirty-nine." Joshua murmurs. "We need one more and then we can head to the college for you guys' orientation."

"Whom are we missing?" you ask.

"It's a girl. Her name's Phillia..." he checks the clipboard. "Huh. Just Philia. No last name apparently. Her airship landed half an hour ago so she should've been here already..."

>Offer to go look for her

"Well, whatever she is doing, do hope she arrives her safe and sound." you rumble. "A young woman in the city after dark is a recipe for disaster. Perhaps we should send people out to find her?"

"We already did, but so far nobody's seen anything." Joshua sighs. "Should've brought a seer with us. Would've been easier to to find any lost freshies that way. I'll check in with the people we've already sent out to see if they've gotten anything. You can mingle with everyone here if you like to pass the time like that."

"I think I shall, thank you." you nod, approaching the crowd of your fellow freshmen. "Greetings fellows!"

You are mobbed almost immediately by a handful of over-eager youths, whose actions in turn draw more attention from the others. Soon enough, you are swarmed by at least a dozen curious youths asking questions faster than you can answer them.

Their inquiries are as you expected them to be; what magic style do you specialize in, what is your elemental affinity, where do you hail from, what do you think of the royal family, etc.

They are many varied, with all sorts of clothes and material embellishments that clearly show off their wealth and influence. But there is one particular person in the crowd of questioners who pulls your personal attention from the mob to them.

They do so by--

>Tugging at your arm
>Stabbing you with a sword

...The attack does little to harm you. In fact, you doubt it was meant to hurt at all. It does scare everyone around you and clear a path for a new speaker to saunter forward.

"Are you a Kinetomancer?"

You look the young woman over and feel something heavy settle in the back of your throat, just aching to be swallowed. She is of eastern descent, clad in the loosest robes you've ever seen and has a large curved sword on her back. Her eyes glow the deepest blue and her lips are full and luscious.

You wipe your face of the water she threw at you and give her your biggest grin.

"Of course, fair lady! But I personally prefer the name Fist Wizard. Most other names do not quite manage to encompass the full extent of a practitioner of this type of magic art."

"Hm-hmm~ Fist Wizard?" she saunters up to you and lays a hand on your chest. "Well, you certainly possess the physique for it..."

The lump at the back of your throat is demanding that you swallow it, but you do not. Fist Wizards do not yield to weakness, and showing it to someone (and a woman no less) is a gross violation of that belief! You will remain strong like a mountain, unmoving and indomitable in the face of this eastern witch's wiles!

She licks her lips and grins salaciously, pressing her front against yours.

Oh no! She's eroding your defenses!

'Saki-chan, cut it. You're making a scene."

The temptress pouts and pulls away her generous assets to face the newcomer, a fellow woman in an equally loose kimono and an equally large sword on her person. She appears as the color opposite of the first woman, red where she is blue and fierce where she is playful.

Her red-eyed gaze flicks between you and the blue-clad temptress in apparent distaste, stepping forward and tugging the first woman back.

"I apologize for my sister. She is rude most of the time, but she doesn't know how to carry herself in a foreign land." the woman in red bows. "I'm Sachi Hasegawa and that is my sister Saki. We're transfer students from the Orient. I'm a Pyromancer while my sister is a Hyrdomancer."

"Mou, Sacchan! You shouldn't give out secrets like that willy-nilly you know!" the newly named Saki pouts, crossing her arms under her... ahem, assets."If you keep doing that, then there won't be a man who'd want to go out with you~"

"And you know mother and father would cut your allowance if you keep that up, right?" Sachi retorts.

"Oh, I'm sure there must be a few generous men willing to aid my financial troubles." Saki grins at the other young men in attendance, who surreptitiously grope their pants' back pockets.

"You mustn't take advantage of your parents' generosity, Miss Saki." you cross your arms, taking note on how the girls' eyes are drawn to the action. "They are working hard to support you in your endeavor to study abroad, so the least you can do is to spend that money wisely and not get involved with any potentially dangerous loan sharks."

"...Mhm, right." the young woman nods.

"Pardon my curiosity" you ask the two sister. "But what is it like in the Orient? I have heard tales and many legends of the eastern masters and their famous arts, but you see so very little of it so far in the west."

"We'd be surprised if you did." Sachi nods. "The mystic masters back in the Orient are very secretive and picky on who they pass on their secrets to. Plenty of family secrets have died out because the master holding onto them wasn't able to find the apprentice in time before kicking the bucket." she shrugs. "Then again, these 'lost arts' are often found again and pioneered under a different name by a different family so it kind of balances each other out to an extent."

"It is a cycle." Saki nods. "Arts are born, refined, mastered, passed on, and die out, only to be reborn again under a different name."

"Wouldn't that cause tensions between two families that pioneer a magic style, though?" you furrow your brow. "If the masters in the east are as secretive as you claim, then that must have led to a lot of blood shed."

The sisters blink, glance at each other, and giggle. You feel your face heat up the slightest bit.

"What is so amusing?"

"We're sorry, it's just," Sachi waves off your concern. "A lot of people think that secrets are worth killing over."

"They are, make no mistake." Saki adds. "Some secrets are dangerous enough to be kept hidden. Things back in the Orient used to be as bloody as you described them, but ever since the current Emperor came into power, there has been a sharp decline in violence between families that possess similar magic styles."

"The Inheritance Laws really helped stabilize things, yeah." Sachi nods.

"Inheritance Laws?"

"When the current Emperor of the Orient came to power, he established a series of laws that help mitigate the tendency for families possessing their own magic styles from starting feuds." Saki explains. "These laws outline potential solutions to problems and punishments to a family that refuses to comply. These punishments range from executions to the total cessation of the family's magic style."

"Considering the pride most magic-touched families have in the Orient, they'd sooner choose to die than to let their magic art disappear." Sachi point between her and her sister. 'It's how our family came to be. in the first place."

"Oh?" you quirk a brow. "How so?"

"Well~" Saki grins and hugs her sister. "My mother married Sacchan's dad a few mothers after my mom gave birth to me."

"So we're half-sisters." Sachi wrinkles her nose. "Let go."

"Nope." Saki giggles, nuzzling her sister's ear. "You're warm~"

"I've got a fire affinity, so I have to be warm." Sachi wriggles in her sibling's embrace, making very eye-catching things happen to their chests. "Let go already."

"Nu-uh. You're warm and I'm cold." Saki slants her gaze your way. "And someone likes the show."

The hot-blooded part of you urges to join in on the fun, to spread open your arms and let nature take its course.

But the rest of you tells you to look away from this indecent behaviour and remain like the mountain you are, stern and unyielding against all-comers beautiful or otherwise. You are a Fist Wizard, a man with a mind and body far greater than many others, and you refuse to fall to some lesser man's weakness.

So you politely clear your throat and look away.

"I do wonder where you obtain these speculations from, Miss Saki." you state. "Because I do not enjoy being the center of ill-gotten attention."

"Saki-chan, get off!" Sachi pulls away from her sibling's embrace. "Geez, what's gotten into you? You're not really this touchy-feely with me."

"Can't your onee-san show her love to her little imoutou when they're in a different land altogether?" Saki pleads, and you nearly think she's being truthful. "We're both alone in a strange new land with few familiar comforts. Which means we have to stick together, right?"

"That's just an excuse for you to start acting weird again." Sachi wraps her arms around herself. "I'm scared now because of you."

"Aw, c'mon Sacchan! It's just a little skinship!"

"Kurt, help me!" Sachi rushes to your side, seeking refuge from her sister's attempts at molestation. "Saki's gone insane!"

"Am not!" Saki rushed forward and tries to glomp Sachi. You put an arm forward and keep the two separate. "Mou, Kurt-kun!"
>>
You laugh and play keep away with Saki and Sachi, using your superior reach and strength to keep the two girls separate.

You mind where your hands are placed however, making sure not to loosen the girls' garb further and make an unwanted fashion incident. The horsing around draws laughs from the other enrolees, who cheer you on from the sidelines. It gets to the point where you're force to literally hold both of them aloff with your arms around their midsections.

Eventually, the fascilitators come in and pry the girls apart as the missing girl is found and your group is on their way to the college proper. via enchanted carriage.

The ride there is mostly spent in excited chatter and sitting beside Joshua, where you spend your time answering more questions and accepting complements from the girls in keeping the Hasegawa sisters from getting out of hand. They also praise you managing to keep from devolving into your base male instincts, whatever that term might mean.

"I still can't believe you managed that." Joshua comments once the girls are satisfied with their complements and questions. "How'd you get two girls to talk to you at once? And one of the few from the Orient, no less?"

"Strange are the ways of a Fist Wizard." you nod at him. "Debate not how we can obtain such positive attention from the fairer sex. Simply accept it."

"Not arguing there, then." Joshua leans into his seat. "So, we're still a while from the academy. Anything you'd like to know about it before we get there?"

"There are a few things that I'm curious about." you state, turning to him. "What are the subjects that will be taught exactly? I understand the Imperial College caters to budding mages and scholars, but I would like a clear understanding of the things we will be learning."

"Right, the invitation letters didn't specify about that, did it?" Joshua nods. "Alright, well, the College is separated into two fields; mundane and magic. Mundane is where the scholars go to for study, with all the mundane subjects they entail. Advanced mathematics, biology, history, etcetera. Two thirds of the student body is made up of mundane students and there's strict rules about messing with them, just a heads up."

"Why would I do such a thing?" you recoil, aghast. "I am a Fist Wizard, not some two bit thug!"

"You'd be surprised how many people get big heads when they get magic." Joshua shakes his head. "We try our best to tell them that having magic doesn't make them better than everyone else, but some people are just that thickheaded."

Hm. It seems those people need to be taught a lesson.

"Anyway," Joshua continues. "The magic field is where mages go to study. There's only six classes; Mana Manipulation, Alchemy, Spellwork, Spell Theory, Beast Taming, and Divination. You get to specialize once you get to your third semester, and focus exclusively on three classes from there onwards."

"You said you are in your third semester earlier, right?" you tilt your head, curious. "What subjects will you be specializing in, if I may ask?"

"Divination, Spell Theory, and Spellwork." Joshua sticks out his chest. "I'm aiming for a spot as a security specialist in the Imperial Court."

>>
"That is a high goal to aim for." you grin and pat his back. "I heard only the best of the best are even considered for such a position. best of luck to you then."

"Thanks." Joshua grins. Or tries to; it comes out as more of a grimace. "Man, you hit like a charging thunderboar. And that's when you're just playing around. Just how strong are you?"

"Not enough." you shake your head. "I do have another question, however."

"Yeah?"

"Are there any other Fist Wizards in the College besides myself? It would be terribly lonely if I were forced to train on my lonesome for the rest of my stay here." you sigh, preparing yourself for the worst. "I understand if there are no other Fist Wizards, but I cannot help but get my hopes up."

"Aw, you scared you make new friends?" Joshua rubs your arm.

"That, and I fear holding back too long may lead to me becoming rusty." you clench and unclench your hand, letting magic flow through the gaps between your fingers. "Unlike most magic styles, Fist Wizardry requires constant use to grow."

"R-Right." Joshua clear his throat and leafs through the clipboard. "Well, rest assure you won't be the only Kinetomancer in the College. There are two more besides you."
>>
>>2584592

>>2584592
>>2584603
I'll be the first to admit that these classifications confuse me somewhat. But surely none of the schools in and of themselves would be 'make your own spells', given that Divination would have its own subset of spells and cantrips and yet is a class of its own?
>>
>>2584610
Maybe Divination involves some specialized tools, like crystal balls or cards or rolling knuckle bones or all that jazz, who knows?

"Jotaro Joestar?" you roll the name on your tongue. "That name sounds eastern and western at once. Is he of a mixed heritage?"

"Yuppers. According to the info I got here, his father's from Orient but his mother is the current matriarch of the Joestar Family. Do you know them?"

"I'm afraid not. I am country born and peasant-raised, hailing deeper inland near the breadbaskets of the Empire. Very far from the seas and salty wind, but much closer to the fields and mountain." you shake your head. "But I have seen their influence, perhaps. Merchant caravans travelling through my hometown sometimes bring goods stamped with two Js."

"That's the Joestar Company logo, for sure. Those goods likely came through a port owned by the Joestars then." Joshua nods "They're a big name near the coasts. They have near-total control of the shipping lanes between the Vermilion Empire and the Orient." the young man pauses. "You think that has anything to do with him being half-Orient?"

The rest of the ride goes on quietly enough; Joshua tries and fails to steer you away from the idea of a good sparring match against the other two Fist Wizards in the College and you answer a few more questions from the still-curious students riding with you. They mainly ask about your likes and dislikes, and your hometown.

A few return questions reveal that most of the people here are noble born, and thus have not known the beauty of nature or life beyond the hard stone walls of their manors.

You think they should rectify this gap in their knowledge soon. You can even help!

But before you can suggest such a thing, the carriages stop and everyone disembarks and you catch your first glimpse of the college you'll be learning in for the next few years; tall, imposing, made from enchanted materials on par with those of the royal palace.

The air is thick with magic energy, enough that you're tempted to stick your tongue out to see what it tastes.

Joshua steps past you and claps his hands thrice.

"Alright everyone! Gather round, gather round!" he gestures to himself and waits for everyone to get themselves situated comfortably. "Now you'll be directed to the student dorms, where you'll spend the night at. There, you can get cleaned and ready for the orientation feast, which starts at eight." he grins. "I hope you guys have big stomach; tonight's main course is going to be whole-roasted Desert Mud Terrors!"

Everyone breaks out into cheers, yourself included. You've never tasted Mud Terrors, but hearsay from passing mechants say it is a delicacy in the western fringes of the Empire and beyond.

"But before we let go guys go, we'd like you to take a slip of paper from this jar." Joshua waves a hand and a glass jar filled with folded paper strips appears in his hands with a soft pop. "On each of these papers are numbers to the dorms. People sharing the same number will be roommates."

"But what if we don't like our roommates?" a voice asks from the crowd. Joshua shrugs.

"Then you can ask the warden and see if they have and spare rooms to separate you into." he shakes the jar. "Now hurry up or you guys'll be late for the food!"

You get your paper slip from Joshua with a quiet nod of thanks, hauling your belongings up a flight of stairs to the fifth and highest floor, where your room is. You unlock the door and step inside, surveying the interior with sharp eyes.

Two beds on opposite sides of the room, two separate study tables and drawers, a shared bathroom, and a small kitchenette equipped with the necessities needed to make snacks and light drinks. You store your shoes in a conveniently placed shoe rack and claim the right side of the room as yours by right of presence.

You're halfway finished in storing your things away when the door to your room opens again. You smile as your ears pick up the pitter patter of approaching footsteps.

"Hello!" you turn as the person steps into view. "Welcome roommaaaahhh..."

"Uhm..." the young woman who was to be your roommate blushed and tightened her grip on her suitcase. "A-Are you my roommate?"

You numbly show her the paper slip your pulled out and she shows you hers. The numbers match, damningly.

For a long moment, both of you just stand there and stare at each other with wide eyes and moving mouths that try (and fail) to produce sound. The situation must look ridiculous, and very improper, if viewed from an outsider's perspective. A young man and a young woman without any marital ties, sharing the same living space together?

Your teacher would wring your neck if he saw you in this sort of situation! And worst of all, you'd let him!

The young woman clears her throat and tucks a strand of her behind her ear, drawing your attention to the eye patch over her left eye and the growing discomfort on her features.

But your Fist Wizard instincts kick in; she's not uncomfortable because of you being here.

She uncomfortable because she's being here.

"I-I'm sorry for... for intruding." she turns and walks to the door. "I-I'll go see the warden and ask for a room change."

>Let her go
>Stop her

It's allowed. It wasn't way back when, but as times changed and student workloads grew heavier, boys started falling asleep in girls rooms after studying for so long and vice versa.

I imagine there to be multiple schools of Fist Wizardry. Contrary to other wizards, who bend the mana around them in order to manipulate the universe, Fist Wizards presumably share the commonality of beginning from a more inward focus, but their means may differ as widely as the mnemonics people use to remember a given concept.

Kurt's seems to involve total mastery of the mind and body as a means of enforcing his will on the world, but there I could just as easily imagine one that calls for a total lack of inhibition and conscious thought in the self to inwardly mirror the uncontrolled nature of the universe. And while that might traditionally be attained through means of meditation, you could also probably achieve it by getting piss drunk.
>>
>>2584775
I can already hear the screams
>>
>>2584775
>And while that might traditionally be attained through means of meditation, you could also probably achieve it by getting piss drunk
Those two could be different variants. The ones who meditate don't get as powerful as the drunk fist wizards, but on the other hand have an unmatched degree of control over their actions.
>>
>>2584800
Unmatched lack of control over their actions, more like.
>>
>>2584800
But that's just being chaotic for the sake of it and that might even hurt the wizard's allies instead of their enemies.

>>
>>2584813
I’d assume the meditation route would be something like unlocking a state wherein your actions are purely dictated by instinct, and would provide an unparalleled level of reaction time and speed, in exchange for becoming fairly predictable in your attack patterns, while getting piss drunk would be more like doing whatever your stupid, drunk self feels like doing, and as such becoming completely unpredictable, at the cost of probably losing much of your agility, surefootedness and ability to dodge attacks.

"Wait!" you rush to your feet and stop her with a hand on her forearm. "At least let me go with you."

"What?" the one-eyed young woman blinks at you. "W-Why?"

A thousand and one answers flash through your mind, each appearing with a myriad of ways to be said. Some are as improper as a drunk's attempts to woo a woman at a bar. Some are foolhardy and reckless, appealing to some women and repulsive to others. Some are decent and reasonable, with a fair likelihood of seducing any fair maiden into keeping your bed warm.

But are neither drunk, foolhardy, reckless, or looking to have a woman keep you company for the night. No proper Fist Wizard would be.

A Fist Wizard is he who has mastered his will and body, using them as instruments to bend the world to his whims as easily as conventional mages would use their wands or staffs or incantations. You have mastered your body long ago, enough to keep your lust in check when dealing members of the fairer gender.

"It is dark out and a young maiden is willing to venture there to accommodate a young man, a reversal of the proper ways." you straighten. "What man would I be for allowing a woman to go out alone?"

"...But we're on the Imperial College campus." she blinks, confused. "What would I have to worry about here?"

"It is the principle of the matter." you clarify. "A real man would never allow a member of the fairer sex to do an uncomfortable task when they themselves are available. Those that do not deserve to be called men."

"But your things..." the young man tries, single ee glancing between you and your half-unpacked belongings. "I-I don't want to trouble you any more than I have to."

"Pssh," you scoff. "That is nowhere near troublesome for a Fist Wizard such as I." you take her briefcase and set it on the other bed. "Leave your things here and let us go see the warden. I guarantee you that they will remain here regardless of what will happen, Miss..."

"Philia." the young woman says. "Just Philia.

"Oh, you were the last one to arrive back at the airship port, yes?" you recall. "I am Kurt Vander. It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Philia."

"P-Please," the young lady stammers. "Just Philia is fine. No need to add the 'Miss' title."
>>
>>2584820
>>2584813
how i think about it is that the one who meditates becomes a scalpel; powerful precise strikes that devastate an enemy in the least ammount of hits. Meanwhile, the wizard that gets drunk becomes a chainsaw; incredibly powerful but with no self control or regards for any other. Like a berserker but not as unreasonable.
>>
>>2584820
So getting pass drunk will make you unpredictable at the cost of a bunch of other stuff- is this the same or different for those drunk fist martial arts styles, but with none of the fluid attacks?
>>
>>2584829
Drunk, unpredictable and stupidly powerful (because you have no inhibitions).
>>
>>2584833
But if you already have mastery over your own body and mind, then there shouldn't be any inhibitors to speak of?
>>
>>2584823
>One eyed
is she a cyclops or has lost an eye?
>>
I would say you're all thinking too small.

In alchemy and hermeticism, there exists the concept of the microcosm and macrocosm, whereby oneself (the microcosm) is mirrors the universe (the macrocosm) and vice versa. Hence, by understanding the self, one may understand the universe. One is all; all is one.

In a world where magic exists, and the flows of Chi in the body may be seen to mirror the mana-rich ley lines that carry the lifeblood of the world, what do you suppose an individual with the ability and will to exploit this correlation might achieve?
>>
>>2584833
That and drunk strength.
That shit can fuck you up.
And the numbness, less pain to be felt.
>>
>>2584836
She was mentioned as wearing an eye patch for whatever reason earlier.
>>
>>2584835
there are always inhibitions. For example, on fight of flight situations (and when you get drunk) the adrenaline activates the 2/3 of the muscle power you don't get to use(because that would damage the bones and other important body parts). The drunk fist wizard would be capable accessing that extra muscle power.
>>
>>2584836
We could ask her, but it might be rude. I have no idea how to set up a conversation that would lead up to us asking about the eye.
I'm not sold on the drunk fu fist. Are we only speculating?
>>
>>2584846
There are inhibitors for normal people, but not so much for people who master the control over their bodies and mind.

"Very well then, Philia." you nod. "And until this matter is rectified, however long it may take, I assure you that you are more than welcomed to-- no, I insist that you have full use of this room wile I find someplace else to sleep."

"Wha-- B-But what about you?!" the young woman stammers. "I-I don't want to cause you any trouble!"

"Spending a night in the wilds is far from trouble for me and I am not unaccustomed to it." you assure her. "In my time spent training, I have enjoyed many nights sleeping in the wilds, enjoying the view of the stars overhead. I do not imagine doing the same here would be any difficult that it is there."

"But, I--" Philia glances between you, your things, and her briefcase on her bed. She looks down, then faces you with a fierce glow in her one good eye. "No. No, this is your room too. If all else fails and we can't change things, then I won't let you sleep in the rough. We'll share."

You are nearly taken aback at the conviction and determination in her gaze. But you laugh and pat her shoulder as gently as you could.

"...That is very thoughtful of you, Philia." you smile, warm and grateful. "And if things do not work out, then perhaps I will consider your offer. Come now, let us see the warden and ask for if we can alter our lodgings."

Well, the most well known “Drunken Fist” is the Wushu style, which is, more or less, meant to aesthetically mimic the style of a drunkard in most aspects, at the cost of efficiency of movement. The Kung Fu style of Drunken Fist is similar, but focuses less on aesthetically resembling a drunk person, and focuses more on efficient movements. There’s also the Daoist style, which focuses on imitating the “Eight Drunken Immortals”, popular characters in Chinese mythology, and is composed of eight forms, representing the different immortals and each with different applications. So there isn’t really a martial arts style that’s actually meant to be used while drunk, just some imitating people who are actually drunk.

You escort Philia down the stairs and locate the warden's home after a brief inquiry with Joshua, who points you to a modest house on the west side of the dormitory. You head there and find a small group of fellow students on the ground, dazed and confused, laying at the feet of a wheelchair bound old man.

He looks up at you and smiles knowingly, turning his chair to face you.

"Ah, another pair of roommates who want to change their arrangements. That brat must've known this would happen if he put me in charge of the student dorms this semester." the old man chuckles. "But that's besides the point. Good evening young'uns, my name is Gehrman Luna; your warden for this semester. What can I do for you?"

You exchange glances with Philia, who swallows nervously and steps forward.

"Sir," she says. "I would like to change roommates."

"Hm?" he glances between you two. "Ah, I see. You are uncomfortable with him?"

"N-No." she shakes her head. "It's just--"

"Then I see no reason to change what's already happened." the warden states simply. "You can't have something changed if there's nothing, correct?"

"Sir, I am a young woman." Philia states.

"...yes, and?"

"And I am a young man, sir." you pick up after Philia. "A man and a woman without marital ties staying together in the same space is... it's improper, sir. Very much so."

"So you're saying you can't keep yourself from ravishing the woman next to you?" Gehrman raises a brow, grinning.

apparently nobody's seen and understood the Jackie Chan drunken boxing movies.

First rule of drunken fighting: don't get too drunk, moderation is key.
That's the only rule. (it's the whole point of those movies, and likely a meta-theme created and supported by Jackie's issues with alcoholism)

When drunk, the present dominates all thought, the future and past disappear; drunken boxing/fighting is all about defeating an opponent's reaction time and expectations. Forms (drunken god stances and moves) are made instinctual by repetition, such that even lowered capability for thought does not impact one's ability to fight.

A fist wizard would rely on his instincts, fighting while drunk, using the capabilities he's trained well enough in such a fluid manner that conventional fighting styles cannot match the changes in approach and attack. That's the crux of the style, that it's more fluid and dynamic. Its weakness is in becoming too drunk, its strength is in allowing alcohol to clear away thoughts unnecessary to fighting.

>>2584900
Gehrman seems strong, let's challenge him to a sparring match and insist that he accept, deny any refusal.

You splutter as your face heats up. You chance a glance to Philia and find her glancing back at you, red-faced and wide-eyed. You both look away and your your best to salvage what little dignity you had left before the dormitory warden embarrasses you further in front of Philia.

"I-I did not i-imply anything of the sort!" you curse your stuttering. "I simply stated that it is improper for a man and woman to be staying in the same space outside of wedlock! Imagine what could happen if the man lost control over himself and did something to the woman!"

"...K-Kurt?"

"Ah, no Philia! I did not mean to frame myself as that possible fiend in that hypothetical! I am a Fist Wizard, with a mind and body beyond such debase things!"

"So you would fist her instead?" Gehrman tuts. "Quite daring for an amateur."

"F-F-Fist...!" Philia steps back and your face feels like its caught fire.

"No! No, I would never! How could I even...!" you shake your head. "Gah! We are straying from the actual point of this conversation! Sir, we would like to exchange rooms or roommates, please. In order to avoid any... unwanted incident from occurring."

"Hmm..." Gehrman rubs his chin with wrinkled hands. "That sounds reasonable enough."

You perk up, turning to Philia with a grin and a thumbs-up. She also seems happy to hear the news.

"However" Gehrman cuts back in. "To make it happen, you must first land a hit on me."

You both freeze and try to wrap your head around the words you've just heard. Did the old man just ask you to hit him in order to get him to agree to change your roommate with someone else?

"...Sir, with all due respect, are you serious?" Philia gapes.

"I am." Gehrman nods. "Land one hit on me and I will grant you permission to exchange roommates with any willing person in the dorm building. Doesn't sound so hard, does it?"

You look the old man over, noting how he doesn't seem to exude any magical power. To your senses, both mundane and magical, the man in the wheelchair before is just an old man. But if he was, then why are there unconscious students laying all around him? Did he use some sort of non-magical weapon t knock them out? Or perhaps he has someone helping him...?

The movies (there's two with Jackie, plus others with derivative styles) are the only notable basis for drunken boxing, and their approaches are pretty well inarguable (truly, they aren't unrealistic in confronting the implications of fighting while drunk). The pinnacle of acting drunk is actually being drunk, was the point.

Not trying to derail, it's just silly that so many anon would think that our fist wizard would go to shit after having some drinks. A fist wizard would likely be the most prepared for fighting while drunk. This all isn't to say that our protagonist should drink, but that he wouldn't be impaired by doing so.

>>2584957

>>
>>2584918
This anon seems reasonable, and we're only speculating. >Agree. You're pretty sure you can take him
It's easy to tell we're not the first to appeal, so he can hold his own.
And some may have even succeeded, if so then he doesn't seem too perturbed by the blow

Although... maybe check to see if there's a healer on campus first.
Just for insurance's sake

Fist. Wizard.

What part of fist wizard don't you understand
>>
>>2585276
how is being a fist wizard related to not seeing if there is medical help on the vicinity?
>>
>>2585458
Character. Medical care isn't the preoccupation of someone overly concerned with battle, unless you're injecting your own concerns on his.
>>
>>2585276
The part where that has anything to do with making sure neither party is permanently injured.
>>
>>2585491
>unless you're injecting your own concerns on his
I'm not trying to troll you or anything, it just doesn't fit with the character.

Still, whatever, suggest what you'd like
>>
>>2585489
Someone who's overly concerned with battle would have special respect for medical care, given how often they'd seek it, and how important it is to being able to return to peak fighting condition.
>>
>>2585512
Down that road lies a character that isn't overly interested in fighting. If anything, such a character would avoid fighting as much as possible, which doesn't fit the archetype.
>>
>>2585512
Well, none of the students piled in front of him seem to be severely injured, I'd imagine Kurt would have commented if they were. Besides, this guy's faculty, I imagine there'd be some blow back if he intentionally injured a student enough that the school's medical facility were needed. And I think we know better then to severely injure an elderly man, deceptive though that appearance probably is.
>>
>>2585489
That makes no sense. Safety is important.
But I agree that it is unnecessary. All the students on the ground only appear to be unconscious with little injury.
>>
>>2585539
Not at all, I'm not proposing it to be a character defining trait, just a result of a character defining trait.
If you love to fight, but you don't seek medical aid where available, thrn you don't get to fight anymore. Because yiu're crippled or dead.

>>2585540
That's true, but it doesn't hurt anything just to ask. Prudence is the better part of valor and all that.
>>
>>2585557
>>2585553
Oy vey.

So we've got a protagonist who was born and raised in a lower-class (however you'd like to envision it) village, and you're thinking he's aware and interested in the medical facilities available to students at a school situated in the capital. Setting aside the idea of him being a fist wizard, do you both not think you're breaking his character by making him concerned with medical response prior to engaging in a limited combat with someone who might well be his better?

Harem Potter aside, there wouldn't be much point to the story if the character didn't behave according to his archetype.
>>
>>2585593
Frankly, I've stopped giving a shit.
We're wasting posts over a barely relevant point about a 6 word question.

I will leave you with one question, though, as I'm highly curious.
What's a harem potter?
>>
>>2585593
>there wouldn't be much point to the story if the character didn't behave according to his archetype.
i disagree with that. The story benefits more if the character behaves different in some aspects.

Pic unrelated
>>
>>2585637
It should be obvious.

Uninitiated adept attends a school of magic wherein he is the central figure in a multifaceted love polygon.

>>2585641
I can understand if you just don't understand, but the story isn't going to benefit if you make the main character some sort of pacifist. There's no goddamn point to a Fist Wizard story if he is going to tiptoe around conflict.

Seriously, you guys, what the fuck is the point if the fist wizard actively tries to avoid injuring anyone? I can understand wanting to make a protagonist the best person they could be, but what the fuck is the point in this story?
>>
This quest is awesome. Please QM continue whenever you have the chance!
>>
>>2585675
i think you are misunderstanding, i don't want to " not injure" anyone nor avoid conflict. Just that in this specific scenario (because we don't know the old man and he obviously s up to something) it would be beneficial to us to see if there is some medic nearby. Who knows, maybe we conect a hit and blow part of his torso off. Its better to be prepared.
>>
>>2585675
It's a brief question in a non character-defining moment.
What I don't understand is what's got you so up in arms over it, treating it like those 6 words are going to cause a complete overhaul of what's already established.
>>
>>2585693
Hell, suggest what you like. I was initially interested in just how foolish the thread was being about a drunk fighter.

Still, what's the point? Why make the fist wizard some empathetic figure? What sort of quest are you trying to read? A nice guy eventually banging the best female character in consensual leadup to marriage? What. Is. The. Point. Of. That?
>>2585692
Good points. Still, it seems to be concerns that the character just wouldn't have without outside interaction.
>>
>>2585742

Hey, it's his fault he's old. Should have died young, wouldn't have had this problem.
>>
"Very well." you straighten your features. "Though it goes against my personal code to hit the elderly, I shall face you to grant Philia her desire for more comfortable lodgings." you step forward to the warden, fists clenching as you enter a stance. "I apologize in advance sir. This may hurt."

You crouch and rush forward just as Philia opens her mouth to stop you. The warden remains unmoving in his chair and just watches you near with an expectant look on his face. You fist shoots forward in a textbook right hook, its speed backed further by your weight, technique, and forward momentum from your abrupt run.

You blink, feel agony stretch across your face, and find yourself on the ground.

"Kurt!" Philia kneels beside you, pulling you into a sitting position. "Are you alright?"

You stare at warden Gehrman, who's still in his chair and grinning mischievously. You trace a finger over your face, feeling a bruise forming on your cheek.

"Did you see what happened?" you ask the young woman. She shakes her head. "Alright then. Lets try again."

"I'm impressed. Most young'uns your age would've been knocked out by that blow. You are tougher than I thought." Gehrman observes. "You may try again if you so wish."

"Gladly." you rush forward again and throw another punch, this time keeping your eyes open.

It makes no difference, and you're sent flying back yet again with a firm hit to your face. You sit up off the grass and narrow your gaze at the old man, mind racing on the possible reasons for you being thrown back. You have several good theories, but you need to test it out a few more times just to be sure.
>>
>>2586344
Heck yeah, that old man is strong. He needs a taste of his own medicine, though
>>
You stand up again and rush forward to hit the man in the wheelchair. Again and again you are thrown back by some invisible force that almost always manages to hit you in the face. Gehrman just watches you impassively from his wheeled throne while Philia has stopped helping you and is now trying to get you to stop.

You' be insulted if her concern was genuine.

"I can do this. Let go, Philia." you grab her wrists and gently pry her hands off your arm.

"Your face looks like a grape!" the blonde urges. "Stop!"

"I almost got it." you tell her. "One more time and I'll have landed that one blow he has been needling me about."

"Oh my, you would fist an old man like me?" Gehrman gasps in faux shock. "How lewd! I feel scandalized."

You do not deign to answer his comment, choosing to settle into a stance instead. Your gaze narrows at the old man, mind establishing every possible outcome of what you'll be doing next and finalizing your next set of moves.

You rush forward, dirt kicking up in the wake of your tread. You hop, spin and land a textbook roundhouse at Gehrman.

This time, you catch it; the faint sensation of someone running a hand over your leg. The feeling is soft and very brief, enough for you to dismiss it as a strange case of battle-jitters or miss it entirely while you're so focused on the old man in front of you.

At the same time, you see traces of magic in the air flow and part, as though something unseen is cleaving through it and rushing to you. You bring up your hands and block the attack, feeling the force disperse around you like water flowing over a rock.

You grin in triumph and readjust to account for the new factor. You follow-up your kick with a barrage of blows and counter-blows aimed at the invisible force that's seemingly trying to protect Gehrman, punching and kicking in the air around the old man while you try to sneak in a few hits to the wheelchair bound elder. But your attacks are stopped before they can reach your target, and your counters fail to land any solid hits on whatever invisible spectre is safeguarding Gehrman.

Eventually, you summersault back to Philia's side, sweating a little and breathing roughly.

Gehrman looks suitably impressed.
>>
>>2586427

>>
>>2586427
This must be the work of an enemy Stand!
>>

>>
>>2586427
I'm thinking some sort of mirror magic.

We threw a solid punch, and we got a solid punch right back in our face. Threw several more and got a punch back in the face for each. We countered all the punches the invisible force threw at us and all our own punches got mysteriously countered.

Its like oobleck, more we try to brute force our way through, the harder it is to get there.

Textbook first lesson to teach upstart brats. I bet not one of the kids on the ground thought to just walk up to the guy and give him a poke on the arm or face. They all tried their strongest magicks on him and got blasted back with those exact same spells.

We might be a mentally and emotionally straight fist wizard, but even we must learn new teachings and temperments if we wish to increase our muscles and our minds.
>>
"Something is watching over you, old man." you say at last. "Whatever it is, it will not allow my attacks to hit you and counters with the exact same move using the exact same amount of force I use, only wholly undetectable." you cross your arms, thinking. "It cannot be magic, else Philia or myself would have noticed it. And it cannot be an enchanted item, else I would have seen it act while I was so close to you. This leads me to believe that you have some sort of guardian entity watching over you."

"If that were the case," Gehrman says, airily. "Then do you know what it is that's watching over me?"

You wrack your mind for an answer, but all the supernatural entities you know that can become invisible have some noticeable part of them remain unhidden. And even if that were the case, then they would still be detectable through their use of ambient mana to turn themselves invisible.

Whatever it is that's guarding Gehrman wasn't just invisible; it didn't even exist until you felt it hit you. Which means...

"...It's not an entity of this world, is it?" you muse.

"Not of this..." Philia's eyes widen. "You mean he has an Eldritch being watching over him?!"

"I cannot say for sure, but that is the only conclusion I can come up with." you tell Philia, before turning back to the dorm warden. "Are we correct in our assumption?"

Gehrman laughs.

He laughs long and hard and loud enough that you can feel it in your bones. You see the air around him shift, revealing an outline of a figure with reed-thin stature, uncomfortably long limbs, and a bulbous head moving in a way that makes you think it clapping its hand together.

The outline vanishes just as Gehrman's laugh slows into a chuckle and you experience a feeling of vertigo and nausea at once.

"In all my years teaching here, never once has a student come so close to figuring out that particular facet of my existence." Gehrman smiles. "Your assumption is far from correct, but it was close. Very close. And here I thought Kinetomancers were simply dumb brutes with magic. That should teach me not presume things I do not know."

You bristle indignantly, but Philia's hand on your arm stops you from hurling back an insult of your own. The dorm warden did not know and the reputation of Fist Wizards has been stained by the idiocy of lessers who claim to be masters when they have barely scratched the surface of what Fist Wizardry is truly about.

"I have slighted you. I apologize." Gehrman bows his head to you. "I meant no disrespect, only self-chastisement. Forgive an old man's senility in the presence of those he should be more respectful of."

"You need not ask for forgiveness when you did nothing wrong." you rumble.

"Thank you. Now, regarding the matter of your lodgings..." you and Philia tense, remembering the whole reason the two of you went to him in the first place. "It is not unusual that the dorm warden agree to a student's demand to change their roommate on their first night here. However, even if I do agree to your request, I will have to run it by the College Director and he will get the final say on the matter."

"But you're the dorm warden! Don't matters that happen in the dormitories fall under your jurisdiction?" Philia asks, surprised.

"You are correct. But I must ask you, which dorm am I the warden to again?"

"...The magic students' dorm." you murmur, connecting the dots. "I see. If this were a request by mundane students then it would have been handled by the warden themselves. But as we are all capable of magic--"

"Then there is no guarantee you will remain separate." Gehrman clarifies, turning to Philia. "I have handled cases where magic-capable roommates who were separated due to one of them being dangerously obsessive conducted a ritual to warp space-time around their room to attach it to their target's room. The student was expelled for conducting a dangerous ritual outside the appropriate facilities and the damage was repaired, but the worry left behind a stigma in the hearts of those that remained. To this end, we came up with a solution."

"And that is?" you inquire.

"The paper slips." Gehrman grins at you flabbergasted looks. "Come now; you are both mages. Did you honestly think I would assign roommates through sheer chance?"
>>
>>2586574
Then what is your reasoning for this?
>>
"Those paper slips were magical?" Philia blinks, confused. "But we didn't... No. No, they were magical, just--"

"Not magic of this world." Gehrman nods. "When you pulled those paper slips out from that jar, the otherworldly magic on them took measure of your capabilities as a mage, your personalities, your potential, and partnered you with a fellow student who is most suited of driving you to greater heights."

"But the impropriety!" you can't help but point out. "A man and a woman sharing the same living space together is--!"

"Is a chance for you to learn about the limits of modesty and the limits you can push when it comes to cohabitation with someone of the opposite gender." Gehrman cuts you off. "You are a good young man, Mister Vander. You are polite, respectful of your elders, and are very accommodating to a woman. However, you give off the feeling that your are not used to sharing space with a member of the fairer sex for longer than a few minutes."

You pause, thinking back on your life prior to arriving here. He had a point, reluctantly enough; you've spent most of your life living and training with men and being told that women are a no-go zone for various reasons by your teacher. His lessons have stuck to you, and you now see that not all of those lessons were good.

"And you, Miss Philia," Gehrman turns to the young woman. "You are a sweet and very polite young woman, but you take that to the extreme. You would rather give something up than fight for it, as evidenced by your desire to allow Mister Vander sole claimant of your room and unwillingness to bother him for help."

"How did--" Philia starts, but Gehrman cuts her off.

"I am the warden to a dorm filled with budding mages. It would stand to reason that I have a means to sense the happenings within your rooms to ensure no foul is done to each other." he glances between you two and grins knowingly. "But I am an old man and I have my moments of inattentiveness. If something improper of mutual consent were to happen in the moments where I could not sense it, then there is nothing I can do to stop it."

You run his words in your head and flush.

"S-Sir, please!" Philia cries out, blushing. "W-We're not like that!"

"Then prove it." Gehrman folds his hands on his lap, watching you with the infinite patience of a wise grandfather. "Live together and prove that the two of you can be more than just lustful youths locked in a room. That you can be mature enough to think with this" he taps his forehead. "And not just this." he pars his crotch. "Or does the Fist Wizard think he cannot handle life with a woman?

>what say?

I agree. Very in character. Although I would add, that when pressed we'd of course go with the challenge. Basically, say yes but it's not wholly about us.
>>
>>2586628
Very well, i shall take the bait and accept the challenge.
>>
>>2586715
>>2586722
Funnily enough, I don't feel like Kurt would be the type to rise easily to provocations. Despite the imagery Fist Wizardry may evoke, Kurt's art revolves around mastery of mind as well as body. And given the implied scope of Kurt's past accomplishments, it would be reasonable to assume he has some deal of aptitude at maintaining his self-control.

Simply phrasing something as a challenge alone probably wouldn't be enough to get Kurt to rise to the bait. In my estimation, the biggest factor in Kurt backing down in this situation would be Philia herself saying that she wouldn't mind sharing the room.
>>
>>2586753
That makes sense
>>
>>2586753
Except it's a challenge based on our natural state, impropriety isn't limited to ones station in life. Kurt has been cloistered, sheltered not just from other magical arts but also from the opposite sex. This seems less about magic, more about personality.
>>
>>2586753
Maybe kurt could see some slivers of truth in the old mans words. He IS uncomfortable by having a female and what kind of self respwcted muscle wizqrd would he be if he didn't get out of his comfort zone and expand his horizons? >>
>>2586781
That's a stretch if I ever saw one.
>>
>>2586765
>>2586766
This is true. Veiled as a challenge is a call for Kurt to expand his horizons and become just a little more worldly.

My point was that the fact that it was phrased /as/ a challenge wouldn't enter into Kurt's decision. In this case, he would purely weigh the chance to gain new experience in an unfamiliar situation against disobeying what his teacher's instruction and - more importantly - knowingly making a young lady uncomfortable.

Naturally, the choice is clear.
>>
>>2586790
Then lets state that we want to expand our horizons, but we also know it's not just about us. Boom.

>>2586784

Were you a younger man or any other Fist Wizard, you would have risen to the provocation and accepted the challenge. Few men could let a jab to their supposed masculinity go without consequence, and once upon a time, you were one such man. Filled with misplaced pride and unneeded passion for the wrong subject.

But your tutelage with your teach taught you to restrain those unnecessary things, mastering you mind and putting your pride and passion to use as fuel for your magic. And in doing so, you learned a valuable lesson.

It isn't always about the self. Sometimes, consideration and action must be given to others as well.

With this in mind, you know what your answer must be.

"Whether I can handle it is irrelevant; I cannot agree to this if it goes against Philia's wishes." To do so would go against everything I have been taught, and a Fist Wizard would never go against the lessons instilled upon him by his betters."

"Hm." Gehrman smiles. "That is the right answer. Well then Miss Philia, what say you?"

The young woman is quiet for a long moment, face pointed down and hands balled up into fists. She her raises her face, it has the look of someone who is determined to achieve something grand.

"I'll be Kurt's roommate." she says. "If it can help spur my growth onwards as you said it would, then so be it."

"Excellent. I can see you both going far, now that you've accepted that tidbit." he looks at the unconscious students who are only beginning to stir into wakefulness. "Go to your rooms and make ready for the feast, then. I'm sure neither of you would want to be late for such an auspicious occasion."

You and Philia return to your room and sit on your beds, facing each other without a word. The silence stretches for a long moment, and you feel the urge to say something bubble up from the hollow of your chest. But for all your self-mastery, no appropriate words come up to the forefronts of your thoughts.

A look at you roommate tells you that she is experiencing the same difficulties as well.

You check the time and stand, prompting Philia to tense and look at you. She relaxes when you kneel next to your belongings and set them aside.

"Shall I help you unpack?" you offer. "We have enough time to prepare and maybe freshen up before the we must leave for the obligated event. Two pairs of hands storing things away is should make things proceed smoother and faster."

Philia blinks once, then smiles and shakes her head.

"No, I should do this by myself. A lady must keep her unmentionables away from a man she doesn't know, right?"

"I suppose so." you nod, glancing at your things. "I may take a while however, so if you finish before me then you are welcomed to use the bathroom. I can wait."

"Thanks." Philia opens her luggage and starts unpacking. "Here's to a pleasant rooming experience, then."

"Here here." you cheer.

>>2586861
>In the meantime, feel free to speculate doods.
Kurt's art revolves around the principle of the Microcosm and Macrocosm.

Currently, he uses it mostly on instinct - performing feats like shortening the distance between himself and a destination in space by reflecting the natural flows of mana about the universe within his Chi, and then contracting the relevant muscle.

At its pinnacle, masters of the art may perform coarse scrying of present events elsewhere in the world simply by meditating inwardly or, with sufficient focus, remotely induce limited thaumaturgical effects at a desired location in the universe.
>>
>>2586917
I think he can cast fist good.
>>
>>2586925
Also possible, but I feel like pure bodily enhancement would have far less room for potential development than using the body itself as an instrument for casting, and is pretty boringly straightforward besides. The arcane arts should damn well be complex and inscrutable; it's right there in the name!

Also, the idea of blowing up an enemy several blocks away in an actual fucking explosion just by flexing your muscles is appealing to me.
>>
>>2586876
It could potentially have something to do with her eyepatch. Eye beams, xray vision, ect. Though i guess that one anon's lightning guess would round out the fire-lightning-water/ice trio that we got going on.

But. Considering we are in a room together, alone, trying to learn not to be awkward; we could just ask her.
Its a simply easy introduction question, like asking someone's major in college. Good for getting to know each other as well as open it up for more, hopefully less awkward, discussion. Plus she already knows we are a muscle wizard, so I doubt she'll be too cagey about telling us.

>>2586917
I always liked the idea that magic is performed by channeling your will to manipulate reality. Most of the time, the traditional wizard tries to understand how pushing reality in certain ways will cause certain, quantifiable and observable, reactions. Formulating a very methodical way for them to project their soul or will to break the universe into submission and do what they want it to. Muscle wizards do the same thing basically, but just with a different mindset. Human bodies can manipulate the world, so by honing and training it, one can manipulate the world better, stronger, faster, and harder. Which ultimately culminates in a person in peak physical condition with the mindset of muscle-over-matter, forcing reality to do what; less like a science that most wizards see it as, and more as an intuition outcome of what they can already do.

For example: punching the air to cause an air blast. Wizards would think to cause a pressure difference, or channel air elementals, or other some such higher-level technobabble they go through to achieve the blast of air. Muscle wizard on the other hand would think: "Moving my hand causes air to move, so if I punch *really* hard, I will *make* the air move even harder!" and because he thinks he can, and does so, the universe bends to his awesome might.

>with sufficient focus, remotely induce limited thaumaturgical effects at a desired location in the universe.
I like this less. With meditation and full control over your mind, sure, I could see a lot of possibilities open up like that. But being able to just 'flex' and cause the universe to shit bricks just doesn't seem... right, I guess. >>2586945 I was about to post the exact same example of flexing causing explosions, but I refreshed right before posting.
I think you undersell the applications and utility of personal-focused magic, though. Transformation/augmentation of our body could be a pretty fun route to take, learn to direct mana into particular parts for strength or rapid healing. Or learning all about the human body and basically become Ken, using our magic and knowledge of the body to poke pressure points for various boons/banes.
Plus I kind of like the limitation we'd have, being great at controlling ourselves and the area immediately around us, but struggling at projecting our powers far out at range.
>>
>>2586969
Fuck you. Being able to do a HERO OF THE BEACH is one of the best things a muscle wizard could do.
>>
It takes you the better part of an hour, but you finish putting away your things and refresh yourselves. Together, you and Philia proceed down and head to the dining hall following directions from conveniently placed signs placed near the dormitories. At this point, the sun has long since set and the first evening stars have begun to twinkle in the heavens high above.

"It seems the stars do not shine as brightly over the city as they do in the forests." you muse, looking up at the sky as you walk.

"Really?" Philia looks up as well. "Huh. You're right. Do you think it has something to do with all the lights being lit up here compared to the countryside?"

"Perhaps. Maybe it's because the ambient mana concentrated here is far lower than in the countryside." you shrug. "We shall find out in our time here, I suppose."

Philia nods, but you pick up on the indecision warring over her features before she can keep them contained.

"Is something the matter?" you inquire.

"No, nothing's wrong. I'm just... curious." she admits.

"About what, if I may ask?"

"You, for starters." she looks at you, abashed. "I've never met a Kinetomancer before, so I don't know how to act around one."

"A Fist Wizard cares not how others act around them. Mostly." you start. "We who practice the ways of magic and the fist are masters of our thoughts and bodies; to the extent that only the most ludicrous outside effects may truly bother us."

"Like what?" Philia blinks.

"Aah, that is for me to know and you to find out." you poke her nose and she grumbles, prompting you to laugh. "But I can tell there is more to your curiosity than just my style of magic. You are curious about me as a person, and not just a mage."

"...A little." she nods. "Could you tell me?"

"Of course!" you grin. "But only if you are willing to answer some of my questions as well. That way, we can both get to know each other well, right?"

"Right." Philia nods, smiling. "Why don't you start? Ask me a question about myself and I'll answer it as best I can."

Idk, its up to how the story plays out and how the QM decides to take things. Especially once we start classes and actually figure out how magic works in this world.

We are called a Kinetomancer, a caster of movement, and of physical aspects as well. Since FistQM seems to be setting up a fairly reasonable setting (as far as fantasy settings go) with some over-the-top awesome shit as well (ie stands), I'm expecting our techniques to be rather conventional.
Mainly body altering and ability enhancing at first, before leading up to cool techniques akin to earth bending (stomping on the ground to shake and redirect the earth), air/force bending (do a backhand to swat projectiles/magic out of the air), or support stuff like pressure points.

If this were something like HUGE QUEST, I would be perfectly fine with silly, ridiculous stuff like an *at-will Wish spell*, just by flexing. Or cannibalizing fat children to become the HUGEST. But since the tone of the story isn't quite that, I'm grounding myself a bit in expectation and Kurt's over all approach to magic. Which who knows, might grow as we get a proper education.
>>
Philia nods, smiling. "Why don't you start? Ask me a question about myself and I'll answer it as best I can."

Kurt thinks for a moment, but cannot think of what he might care about concerning this girl he's just met. "I dunno, let me sleep on it."

Turning in, he drops into a deep and satisfying sleep, waking to sunlight and birdsong filtering in through the windows of the room.

You think about your current situation with Philia and several questions come to mind; her eye-patch and the lack of a last name being the most prominent among them. Lacking only one is enough to draw attention, but both is cause for concern.

But you wouldn't pry. Its her secret to tell and she will tell it when she feels comfortable enough to. You have more than enough patience to wait for that day to come. In the meantime, you will have to settle for questions on subjects that are less likely to discomfort your roommate.

"Well, for starters, where is your hometown?" you ask, deciding on a relatively safe subject. "Are you an Imperial-born or a foreign citizen?"

"I'm an Imperial citizen. My hometown is Blue Tear, a large town named so for being near the Blue Tear Lake."

"Isn't that town near the vacation home of the Imperial family?" you blink. Philia nods.

"The very same. Supposedly, the current Vermilion Emperor's grandfather fell in love with the fish dishes there. So much so that he had a second house built there." Philia giggles. "Besides that, the town is a really famous tourist spot for foreigners and domestics travelers because of Blue Tear Lake water elemental Sylphie. She's widely considered the town's mascot."

"You must be very familiar with your hometown if you know so much about it." you smile. "Mayhaps you could give me a tour there if we ever stop by?"

"Certainly. But don't expect a lot of accuracy." the young woman shakes her head. "I haven't been back there is a long time. I've spent the last fifteen years wandering across the Empire."

"Why is that?" you ask, not able to keep your curiosity hidden.

"...Something happened and I was cast out of my house." she says, voice quiet and a little sad. I'm still not welcomed there anymore, last I checked."

"...Well." You clear your throat. "I sincerely apologize if I've brought up some uncomfortable memories of that time."

"It's okay." Philia smiles. "It's been years since then. I've gotten over it by now."

You nod and kindly ignore the way she tucks a hand into her pocket. It's obvious she's lying about being over whatever got her kicked out of her home over ten years ago. No matter how much time would pass, there are always some wounds that do not heal easily.

"What about you?" Philia asks. "What's your hometown like?"

"I live in the farming town of Luden, near the base of Mount Schlidn. It is nothing compared to Blue Tear; nothing but farmland and thick forests." you pause. "Well, not necessarily; there are monsters living in that forest and sometimes they become overconfident in their abilities and attack."

"Goodness, has anyone ever..." she gestures with her hands, unwilling to say what you think she wants to say.

"Plenty of people have gotten hurt and died before I became proficient enough in my magic style to lend a helping hand in my hometown's defense. Thunderboard stampedes, rampaging feral wyverns, orc tribes and small goblin hordes are common occurrences so I was forced to learn quickly or fall hard." You raise an arm and flex it. "And I certainly learned quick."

"So you have experience fighting monsters then?" Philia inquires.

"Not enough to make me invincible against them, but certainly enough to make me treat them seriously should I ever meet one somewhere." you waggle a finger as a lecturer would their pointing stick. "Beasts though they may be, monsters are no less dangerous than your fellow sapients; they think and plan and learn just like any other, and some even possess peculiar powers of their own. Never assume a monster is merely a simple animal."

"I understand. Thank you." Philia nods. "But do you have a favorite monster you'd prefer fighting against?"

"A Fist Wizard is never picky as to whom they face, so long as their opponents are capable of spurring growth." You nod. "I have fought a variety of different monsters and I find many of them to be worthy opponents to test my mettle against."

"But you have a preferred monster foe you would face, yes?" Philia pushes, sole eyes glimmering with excitement. "What is it?"

You blink at Philia's sudden interest in what monster you'd prefer fighting against, a very peculiar turn of events from the sombre conversation you both had barely a minute ago. But she did ask a question, a simple one at that, and you would not deny a proper answer to someone whose voice carried the innocent exuberance of a child who'd seen their first fireworks display.

Besides, it gives you a chance to tell a story! No Fist Wizard would ignore such a chance!

"When I was still a defender of Luden, I faced a great many number of foes. Ranging from the numerously weak to the singularly strong." you begin. "I've warred with Draugrs packs, Goblin hordes, Orc Tribes, Thunderboars, various magic-capable animals, and even a few restless spirits. But the monstrous foes that I would find the most enjoyment is battle are most certainly Feral Wyverns."

"W-Wyverns...!" Philia gasps. "But don't they stick to the skies, mostly?"

"They do indeed. In some regions, they are hailed as the 'King of the Skies' and their eggs are highly sought after by the Imperial Army to be bred hatched as mounts for officers." You grin fondly as past memories rise to the forefront of your thoughts. "Their hides are proof to most spells and anti-aerial weaponry commonly fielded by peasants. Luckily, I am no common weapon and wyverns have a tendency to strafe the ground with the fire breaths. It is child's play to simply hop on them and start attacking."

"What spells do you use?" Philia's eye is sparkling now, captivated by your words. "I heard wyverns have a weakness to lightning and wind!"

You guffaw.

"Why Philia, do you think myself to be so physically weak as to rely on magic when fighting?" you grin broadly at her look of shock. "My bare fists alone are enough to bring down a wyvern!"
>>
"You fight flying wyverns and bring them down to be slain... bare-handed?" Philia gapes. "Without magic?"

You laugh and pat her head. How close-minded is she to have never heard the tales of Fist Wizards battling beasts bare-handed and wrestling them into submission? Especially seeing as she had wandered the Empire after her... less than favorable circumstances forced her to travel. It seems you have to properly educate her on how a Fist Wizard fights monsters!

"If you do not believe me, then I shall prove my worth to you come the first Beast Taming class." you rub your chin. "Though I doubt I will be able o slay such a beast, as the class teaches about taming them and not outright killing." you can't help but scoff. "Bah. I am sure there are requests on the Quest Guild that require monsters to be slain. I shall show you my true monster-slaying skills then."

"I'll look forward to it then!" Philia beams. "Ah, we're here already?"

You pause and turn to a set of heavy oaken doors. Above them is a plaque that reads 'Dining Hall' and a sign hung on one of them reads 'Freshmen Please Enter'. You exchange glances with your roommate and quirk a smile.

"It seems so." You put your hands on them and set your shoulders. "Let us make our grand entrance then! To make a lasting impression upon those waiting inside!"

"A-Are you sure?" Philia frets. "They might--"

But you are already moving.

You put your hands on the doors and push. They slide open with nary a sound, but the sudden gust of wind ceases all conversation beyond the doorway, allowing you to step inside without fear of being unnoticed. Eyes are drawn to your form as you enter, and many new hushed conversation star anew at the sight of your incredible physique.

"Greetings fellows!" you grin broadly and put your hands on your waist. "I hope my roommate and I are not late to the festivities!"

A few people gasp in awe of your confidence, and a few more are taken aback at the forward inquiry. But more than them appear suitably impressed, and some are nudging each other for details on who you are.

"Not you are not, Mister Vander." a voice cuts through the whispers and hushed conversation. "In fact, you are right on time."

You turn to the speaker, an older gentleman with a pair of aristocratic sunglasses sipping a mug of... something. He sits on a long table, alongside two dozen other older adults, each looking at you with varying degrees of amusement.

"Oh! Well, that is good to hear. I certainly would not desire to miss out on such a feast!" you look around at the assembled students. "Excuse me while I find a seat."

"Actually, Mister Vander," you hear the older gentleman call out. "Would you remaining standing for a moment? You are not in trouble, I assure you. There is simply something I would have you do in a moment's time."

Hm. Well, who are you to deny a polite request?

"I shall do so!" you agree heartily and make your way to the side of the hall.

Philia gives you a worried look, but you mollify her with a grin and a thumbs-up. That is enough make her smile tentatively and find herself a seat while you remain standing.

The older gentleman from before stands up and clears his throat. When he speaks, his voice is loud and echoes throughout the hall.

"Young ladies and gentlemen of the Vermilion Empire, I would like to welcome you to the Imperial College of Magic and Higher Learning. I am Percival Hastings the third, your Headmaster and teacher for the Magic field student's Spell Theory class. To the returning students of the previous semesters, welcome back to another six months of hell." the hall bursts into polite laughter. "And to the newly-enrolled freshmen, I would like to be the first extend to you all my warmest welcome and sincerest gratitude for accepting the invitation letters we sent out to you."

Everyone applauds the man, both students and the other staff members seated at the table beside him. You yourself give him a few claps and a smile, accepting his thanks.

"This feast marks the beginning of a new semester for the returning students and a fresh start for the newly enrolled. It also marks the ninety-seventh year this college has been operating, a landmark achievement for any major learning institution. As such," he raises a hand. "Before the feast begins, I would like to treat everyone in attendance to a brief round of fantastical entertainment. To that end, I would ask the two newly enrolled Kinetomancers to step forward."

You take that as your cue to return to your prior position in the center of the hall, enduring the storm of whispers and excited murmurs that erupts as you take your position.

Across from you, a young man in black and wearing a strange hat takes his own position. From your talk with Joshua, this must be Jotaro Joestar.

"Jotaro Joestar and Kurt Vander." the Headmaster of the Imperial College says. "Practitioners of the fabled magic art of Kinetomancy, involving the infusion of physical might and magical prowess into a cohesive whole. There are tales of your exploits in the Empire, so much so that when you came of age, other foreign colleges had attempted to recruit you both into their ranks." he looks between you both and gestures with his hand. "If this is no trouble, then I would humbly request a demonstration of your prowess to us the teachers and your fellow students."

The interior of the hall warps, space bending to the arcane might of the Headmaster. The table move without actually moving, the ground stretches, and the dining is altered into a fighting arena.

You can't help but whistle appreciatively at the display, even as the students cry out in surprise and awe.

"Yare yare daze," you hear Jotaro Joestar sigh, gripping his cap. "And here I was hoping for a quiet dinner after the long boat ride here."

"Come now Mister Joestar, we Fist Wizards thrive off of action!" you exclaim. "Where is your sense of adventure? Do you not wish to test your mettle against me?"

He looks at you with a gaze most would consider dull, and a proud handful would think a insulting. But you are no lesser man and see right through his facade; he is appraising you with his gaze, judging you with eyes that glint with the experience of reading people. Eventually he smiles and his fingers leave his hat.

"If we are going to spar, then lets la down some rules first." he raises a finger. "No holding back," another finger. "And we stop at first blood."

"Are you certain?" you cock a brow. "My physical might alone is enough to shatter enchanted materials."

"If that's how strong you are, then I doubt this spar would last long." Jotaro smirks challengingly. "So. Are we fighting or do you have anything to add?"

"Before we engage in this spar, I would first like to conduct the Fist Wizard's Greeting."

The term garners interest from the onlookers, with hushed conversation breaking out as they try to figure out the meaning behind the name. You yourself knew nothing of the Fist Wizard's Greeting when you first began on your journey as a wielder of fist and magic, but you learned and discovered the rite to be an important part when initiating any kind of friendly fight between two practitioners of the magical fist.

Jotaro's face remains impassive and stoic, but you pick up on the slight twitch at the corners of his mouth and take that as approval enough.

You set your feet shoulder-width apart, enter a stance and F L E X.

Almost immediately, your shirt strains to hold back the overwhelming manliness coursing through your well-developed musculature. Individual sutures rip and tear and buttons go flying like musket shots as you focus the entirety of your being into one monumental act of respect for a fellow practitioner of fist magic.

You growl and flex your pecs, and that is enough to bare your upper body in an explosion of torn cloth. Your rippling physique draws gasps and cheers from onlookers both student and teacher. At the same time, you also hear humiliated whimpers from lesser men.

Jotaro sees this and adjusts his stance.

He spins the other way and stops abruptly with his broad back to you. He raises his hand and points to the side, where a shimmering in the air preludes the appearance of an ethereal musclebound figure. The figure F L E X E S his incredible physique as astral flames manifest around him in a sudden flash of purple, the light glinting off his shoulder pauldrons in a way that reminds of you a distant star.

The excited murmuring grows at the appearance of the ethereal figure, with a few even applauding the show of manliness between you and Jotaro.

"A projection?" you note. "Impressive, Mister Joestar. But you would have stood a better chance at victory if you kept from showing your hand."

"Tipping off my hand? I think you misunderstand." your opponent grins. "I'm just giving you a handicap, seeing how much you seem to need it. After all, not a lot of people can stand up to「 Star Platinum」."

"「 Star Platinum」? Is that the projection's name? It certainly sounds as impressive as it looks." you grin, raising your fists and channeling magic into them. "But I wonder if it lives up to your boasts?"

Jotaro says nothing, letting his projection step in front of him in a fighter's stance.

You rush forward to meet the projection mid-way, fist cocked back and filled to the brim with mana.

You and「 Star Platinum」get within punching distance in the rough center of the impromptu arena. You let loose with a textbook straight while the projection executes a flawless right hook. Unwilling to risk taking a hit to your face (for fear of drawing blood and losing), you adjust your fist so that it meets with the projection's own.

The impact of two fists colliding results in a deafening crack and a shockwave that kicks up dust and knocks those unprepared for it to their rear.

But the projection does not cease in its movements and its other arms comes back around for a straight. You think without thinking and swing your other arm to meet the approaching fist halfway, creating another smaller shockwave that disperses the dust around you and your opponent.

You meet the projection's gaze and share a grin with it even as your fists pull back and commence a high-speed punch barrage.

You engage with ferocity and passion that is only matched by the projection's own. The barrage continues unabated for a few seconds before an opening is created.

Unfortunately,「 Star Platinum」takes advantage of that opening to land a solid left hook to the side of your face.

You skid a good three feet back, head turned to the side and arms raised in an aborted attempt at follow-up punches. You pulse your magic through your face, relieved that you aren't bleeding, before lunging back into the fight with the projection.

"Come on!" you yell, resuming your punch barrage with renewed vigor. "You can do better than that!"

'ORA!' the project yells back, trying to out-punch you.

The two of you resume your positions in high-speed punch barrage at the center of the arena, kicking up wind and throwing shockwaves around every time your fists make contact with one another.

But the ache from the hit your received from「 Star Platinum」drives eggs you on, like a trainer spitting insults at your back whenever you fail at a challenge. That feeling pushes you further, forces you to hit faster and harder than you did previously, and you gradually manage to take three steps closer to the projection.

「 Star Platinum」yells its warcry and throws another punch at your face. You take it, having faith in your innate toughness to weather through the worst of the blow without bleeding as you dig your feet into the ground to keep from skidding back.

Then you throw your own counter blow, scoring a direct hit in the center of「 Star Platinum's」face. The projection is sent flying backwards halfway to its master, who you catch wincing a little in sympathetic pain. Then the projection rights itself and flies back to you, fists raised to pummel into yours again.

You manage to close the distance between you and Jotaro before you're forced to punch-duel his projection once again.

The punch-duel between yourself and「 Star Platinum」reaches its most climatic pitch as your fists meet each others for the final, decisive time. You put every effort into overwhelming the projection's strikes, but「 Star Platinum」has no physical form to hamper it while you do. As a result, the project's movements gradually begin to speed up as yours remain the same.

Gradually,「 Star Platinum's」begin literally pushing you back. Your feet struggle for purchase on the smooth floor of thee warped dining hall but find none as you're slowly forced back.

You stare into the projection's eyes, seeing Jotaro there instead. You feel his blows meeting yours instead of 「 Star Platinum's」, and doubt starts to trickle into your heart as you are slowly outpaced.

Was this the limit of your abilities? Was there still an invisible barrier keeping you from achieving the very pinnacle of human physical prowess? Were you still weak?

You grit your teeth and banish those thoughts from your mind. This was not the time for self-doubt; on the battlefield, doubt kills. And your teacher made sure to beat that out of you back when you were still under his tutelage. You set your feet and flood your arms with mana, rejuvenating worn muscles and empowering your blows further.

"ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!" you begin to chant alongside「 Star Platinum」, your own blows picking up speed.

Through the projection's semi-corporeal form, you see Jotaro's eyes widen.

That wouldn't make sense would it? That would mean he would be both a punch wizard and a cronomancer
>>
Your and 「 Star Platinum's」fists miss in one of the punch-exchanges and the projections scores a hit under your chin. Your head in forced back and your feet begin to lift off the ground.

You grit your teeth and force your head down against「 Star Platinum's」uppercut. You and the project trade similar competitive looks before the being's strength wavers for the briefest moment and lets your two feet firmly rest upon the floor.

It is all you need.

Your arm cocks back and you deliver your own uppercut to the project's chin.「 Star Platinum」struggles to keep itself in place like you did against its own attack, but it lacks the will of a Fist Wizard and the determination of an actual, physical person. The being it sent careening upwards and through the ceiling with a mighty crash, much to the shock of everyone in attendance.

Jotaro himself staggers back, the sympathetic pain shared between him and his projection bleeding through.

You capitalize and rush forward, fist cocked back and sparking with mana.

Jotaro recovers and spots you approaching. He raises his hands forward and「 Star Platinum」materializes before him like a guardian spirit. It spreads its arms before you like the noble protector it is in order to halt your attack.

Your fist swings, but it does not connect with the projection.

>implying a wizard has to be limited to only one school of specialization
>implying Fist Wizardry can't do practically anything anyway :^)
Making assumptions like that will get you killed on the battlefield, anon.
>>
>>2588853
I think Fist Wizards brute force things and have to adapt to their situations, especially starting out. So each one is unique. We seem to have an extra emphasis on fundamentals, which is awesome. We haven't even begun to specialize.

Masters in the basics of CQC.
We should branch into healing magic
>>
It hits the floor before the projection, and the mana you've been gathering in your fist shoots into the ground below you.

It gathers the rock and earth into a pillar as it travels under「 Star Platinum」, pooling just in front of Jotaro. Your opponent only has a brief moment to widen his eyes before a pillar of rock shoots out from the ground; hitting his stomach with enough force to knock the air out of his lungs and send him flying back.

The hit to its physical anchor is enough to destabilize「 Star Platinum」, making it waver between the tangible and intangible long enough for you to barrel through it. As the projection fades like smoke in the wind, you raise your other fist and swing at the downed Jotaro.

The impact is enough to crater the ground and break the bones of a mature wyvern. The dining hall shakes ominously from the weight of your fist and everyone holds their breath for the ultimate outcome of the spar as you pull your fist out of the floor.

From his place beside the crater you just made, Jotaro tracks your fist with wide eyes.

"It seems I have won, Mister Joestar." you point out, unnecessarily. Jotaro blinks once, twice, and runs a hand over the cheek next to the crater you made.

It comes away bloody.

You opponent stares at the blood on his fingertips and lets out a quiet, rueful laugh. He accepts your outstretched hand and you haul him to his feet as「 Star Platinum」manifests behind him.

"Good fight." Jotaro comments, offering a hand. You take it in a firm shake. "And you can call me JoJo. Everyone I know does."

You grin as the headmaster steps forward with a look of satisfaction upon his features.

"And so concludes the mock battle between two new Kinetomancers of the Imperial!" Headmaster Percival announces. "A fine showing you both put up and a grand introduction for the new enrollees of this semester."

Everyone bursts into cheers and applause, with the more rowdy among them conjuring confetti and streamers and shooting them into the air. Even the teachers look amazed, clapping and whistling their own appreciation for your incredible martial prowess. Amidst all the clapping and cheering and whooping, you think you also pick up Philia's own congratulations flittering through all the hubbub.

"We have to do this again sometime." Jotaro comments. "In a proper arena with proper adjudicators watching over us."

"I could not agree more, friend." you sling an arm over his shoulder as you wave at the cheering crowd. "Now let us bask in the praise an applause, like true Fist Wizards!"

Jotaro laughs and joins you in your waving, earning more cheers and more confetti.

Thus begins your first semester in the Imperial College of Magic and Higher Learning.
