Superheroes were once thought to be a thing of fantasy, comics and cartoons for children to read and laugh. But that all changed with the arrival of Scion. On may 19th 1982 a crashing passenger flight over the Atlantic was saved, held aloft and flown to safety by Scion the first hero. Ever since that day sometimes, in your darkest moment. When your worst nightmare becomes reality. Something breaks inside you, and from that break comes Power.

Your name is Barnaby Campbell, and you've long since given up hope of that though. Your father's beatings aren't enough and the abuse at school isn't enough, you've long since accepted that you'll never be part of those chosen few.

Speaking of abuse at school, you pull yourself up from your position on the floor of the boys' bathroom in Winslow High. Brockton Bay was a shithole, and Winslow was the worst of it. What once was a good school had fallen from grace due to a dearth of funding, and twisted into an abattoir of the mind filled with the stupid, poor and violent.

You happen to exist in the second category, which makes you prey for the other two. As with most days you need a strategy. You have to avoid your tormentor Declan (A neo nazi wannabe and recruiter for Empire 88, a white supremacist crime gang with a shitload of supervillains.) at all costs.

What's your plan?

Personally I think the quest could have still worked if you went a bit more wild instead of sticking with what you got, like introducing enemies from other earths like Earth Shin or something like that, and we had so many good moments that it feels bad that went to waste. But anyways I'll be sticking around and see if can make as much of an impact again.

Controversial choice, but I respect it. We got out of scale for the setting pretty quick. Given how hard you were shotgunning those threads, I can see how it might've gotten away from you.
>>

Nigga you don't seem to understand, when I say made of lightning I mean you're physically lightning. You have a human form but your insides are lightning. Riding bolts, generating storms, lightning grenades, bio healing, the whole nine yards man. If lightning isn't your thing then, Particulate Control. Like Sand Man but better cause you can control more than just sand.
>>
You know what would be cool? If we got Scarecrow powers this time instead of Jokers.
>>
Declan Burrows has been your worst enemy for two years now for two reasons, firstly he's convinced that your voice alone makes you gay and secondly you happen to live within Empire territory. Those two things have given him reason to kick your ass over and over for so long that your family doesn't even notice the bruises any more, and even frequently broken arms aren't enough to garner support from the faculty.

They're terrified of the Empire, and he makes it well known that Hookwolf owes him a favour for something.
That's got to be bullshit though, no way he has that much pull. It'd be like you saying you had Armsmaster on speed dial.

[Armsmaster: Head of the local Protectorate, a team of government endorsed superheroes. Also your personal favourite.]

But you don't, so you'll have to take matters into your own hands.

You keep your hand in your pocket as you walk from class to class, gripping your shitty pocket knife tightly as you keep an eye out for your tormentor. It's in between second and third period that he makes his move, cornering you on your way up to English on the top floor.

"Hey! Queer. I'm pretty sure the third floor has a no fags allowed policy. Breaking rules gets you punished you know? I'm a responsible member of society, so I can't let this go on without doing the right thing."

He steps in close, and you back up, bumping against the wall.

You try to steel yourself, but you've never even been in a proper fight before. You flinch and step back as he takes another step in, then he buries his fist in your gut. You take the kicking as best you can, which considering all of your experience is actually quite well. He's not as strong as Father, nor as angry. He doesn't break either of your arms this time either, clearly he's had a good day so far.

It's a good five minutes or so of getting your ass kicked however, and you're late for class when you do manage to drag yourself off of the floor. Thankfully not even the teacher asks what happened. Mr Welks can be an asshole sometimes, but at least he has the decency to feel bad and not punish you for what happens.

It might be a concussion, but time flies quickly and you soon find yourself grabbing up your books as the bell rings. Shuffling up and out of your seat as the students around you head out of school.

You can't go home, not yet. Father works nights, so he'll be back and awake for a few hours at least.

The boat graveyard usually has cool stuff in, you even found some of L33T's old tinkertech there once and sold it for nearly a hundred dollars.
Go hang out on the Boardwalk, distract yourself with superheroes and window shopping.

You make your way down to the old docks, there's a guy who sells homemade hotdogs down there that you've been dying to try for ever now. The old roads are cracked and pitted, surrounded by graffiti-ed buildings on all sides.

This area doesn't see the Protectorate often, they can't hold back the Empire with the few capes they have. Even if they could, the ABB would step in and fill the gap.

[ABB: Azn Bad Boys: Another ethnically focused gang, this one being for asian people. Only has two capes, but their leader Lung beat the entire Protectorate team at once to establish himself in the city.]

The city's mostly already lost by now, only being kept afloat by the money from the Boardwalk which coincidentally happens to be the only place that the heroes patrol with any regularity.

Eventually you find yourself in a small square surrounded by old shops. Market Square used to be bustling, a second Boardwalk near the docks where fishermen and other workers would come to get food and buy cheaper than they could get at the more upscale parts of the city.

All that's left now are two old book stores and Dave, the hotdog vendor.

You step towards his stall at the back of the square, you can see five or six other people around as you head up and prepare to make your order.

You're distracted from your order by the sound of something whistling through the air, luckily having the survival skills of a Brocktonite leads to you diving left as a large blue blur slams into the stand you were just about to order from.

You scramble away from the ruined stand as Armsmaster pulls himself out of the wreckage, blue armour torn and scraped. He's coughing up blood and waves you away as he unsteadily pushes his way to his feet.

"Get...[hack]...back, I've got this. Run!"

You stand and stare for a second as he pulls himself up.

But you're quickly brought back to reality by the hideous sound of metal scraping against concrete. You turn and see exactly what'd do something like this. Hookwolf.

A giant wolf shaped mass of swirling steel needles and hooks stalks down the street towards the two of you, the other citizens are either watching from a safe distance or making as much space as possible.

[Hookwolf: has been previously described, but is also a member of Empire 88]

Armsmaster falls forwards when he tries to stand, blood leaking from his mouth and spattering on the ground as he tries to breathe. It doesn't sound good.

Grab him, he can't fight like this and Hookwolf kills Heroes whenever possible.
Run, you can't do anything of use here.
Distract Hookwolf, maybe you can buy some time.

There are no pictures I can use for Hookwolf in his wolf form. I'm mad.

You stand between Hookwolf and Armsmaster, looking around desperately to try and find a way to distract the giant chainsaw monster. In the end the only thing you can see is Armsmaster's halberd, lodged in the steel remains of the hotdog stand. You tush over as Hookwolf stalks towards you, the screeching of steel almost sounding like a slow chuckle. You pull on the Tinkertech weapon, falling backwards as you recover it from the wreckage.

"No... run...don't..."

You ignore the pained groans of the Protectorate leader as you charge forwards, halberd raised above your head. The Nazi supervillain seems surprised by your valiant efforts but swiftly recovers, lunging forwards with a sickeningly feral laugh. The two of you meet in the centre of the square. You strike first, and at first it seems pretty good. The Halberd buries itself deep in the wolf's steel hide and bites deep, eliciting a pained roar.

That's when it all goes wrong.

Hookwolf seems to flow around the embedded weapon, hooks and spikes rushing forwards and up your arms. You can feel them shredding the flesh and bone as you're slowly and inexorably drawn into the body of the wolf.

And you black out from the pain.

One of the best things about gravity manipulation as opposed to bog-standard telekinesis is that you're limited by the rate at which you can accelerate objects, not by the amount of force you can exert on them, which means that you can levitate objects no matter how large they are, while max speed varies from object to object depending on their terminal velocity, which depends on their mass and aerodynamic properties. Cool shit.

Also, you can pull THIS trick:
"From Szeth’s perspective, the hallway was now a deep shaft down which he was falling, and the two guards stood on one of the sides. They were shocked when Szeth’s feet hit them, one for each face, throwing them over. Szeth shifted his view and Lashed himself to the floor. Light leaked from him. The floor of the hallway again became down, and he landed between the two guards, clothes crackling and dropping flakes of frost."

In your panicked state there's only one thing you can do, so you pull on the feeling, bringing it up to the forefront of your mind.

The exertion of it nearly blacks you out, but you feel your body cool as you fall downwards, the hooks disappearing from your body as you hit the ground. You open your eyes to a particularly strange sight.

Your body has been covered with a strange black field that seems to suck in and stretch anything it touches, you can't see through it to what's beneath. It almost looks like you're wearing armour. The only thing that doesn't seem to be covered is your eyes.

After a few seconds You look over to Hookwolf, who has a large you-sized hole in his wolf form. He stirs and slowly begins to push himself to his feet as you try to do the same.

Eventually you manage to push yourself up as well, staggering backwards as he sways on his four legs clearly either injured or very tired.

His hooks still spin and move, but there are large parts of his body that seem twisted, stretched and warped in ways that you're pretty sure his power doesn't do.

He looks more hesitant now, he's pacing back and forth, clearly furious but wary given your new getup.

Then he leaps.

Plan?

The colossal beast lunges forwards, snarling and howling with bloodlust as the car sized chainsaw monster hurls itself at you bodily. You pull yourself to the side as it flies past, twisting and reaching out a black armoured hand.

[BARNABY OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I0TLN2yLYI ]

You miss on the first attempted grab, but you stagger after him and manage to get a hold when he lands. His leg curls and twists around your hand, with the hooks bending and stretching as if they want to cooperate with your grab. Hookwolf screams as his leg shatters, twisted into impossible shapes by the field around you. He pulls away and the whole damn thing comes off, pulled straight off.

It's not a clean cut though. A long, thin stretch of leg trails after him as he retreats to a safe distance and limps around you, the confidence he'd previously displayed gone. You stand next to Armsmaster as the racist bastard paces back and forth, not nearly so cocky now that his leg's gone.

Try to Intimidate him, he's clearly on his last legs.
Go back in, all you have to do is touch him.
Try and get the armour off of an arm or something, you need to get Armsmaster to safety, quick.

Rather embarrassingly, you shortly discover that Hookwolf is very fast.
You leapt forwards, your arms outstretched in what you imagine to be a rather heroic looking pounce. Unfortunately Hookwolf decided to stop simply running into your outstretched arms and dodge, greatly reducing the effectiveness of your "Black Hole Wrestling" style. He leaps around and roars at you before running back up the street, he makes good time for someone as hobbled as he is and it'd be difficult for you to follow.

On the other hand, Armsmaster is facedown in a puddle of his own blood seemingly exerting all of his energy on simply continuing to breathe, he might need help with that.

Then on the entirely hypothetical third hand, you're starting to come down off the adrenaline and the pain is coming back with a vengeance. Also you can no longer see out of your left eye, and you can't feel your hands.

Also you've just fallen over and are blacking out from blood loss.

You grit your teeth and force yourself back up, staggering to your feet as you see the other members of the Protectorate approach from the square's south entrance. Miss Militia and Dauntless are at the head of the pack, with several PRT troopers trailing behind them. You can also see an ambulance pulling up.

That's nice, you could probably do with an ambulance.

They're approaching with some caution, but they don't seem to be too scared. Miss Militia moves in first, a heavy duty pistol clasped in her hands. She stops at about two metres before lowering the pistol slightly. "Hey, you mind if we grab Armsmaster there? We've got a healer coming in. We also have backup on the way if you're a villain, I don't think I've seen you around so don't be offended, it's just in case."

She looks back between you and Armsmaster while the PRT officers move in and grab him.

"Thanks, now if you'll excuse me I have to be going." be cool.

"Don't suppose I could get some of that medical attention? I'm kind of bleeding to death here, pretty sure that's bad."

She looks surprised for a second, then quickly nods her head and gestures towards an ambulance. "Yeah, sure. They're for public use. We were honestly expecting a lot more collateral damage from Hooky so we've got some spare. It's a shame we couldn't bring him in though." She stares at you for a second before continuing. "Or was that a polite way of asking for help?"

"Yeah, I can't even feel my legs. Let alone move them."

She lets out a short laugh at that, and goes to grab you by the shoulder before you warn her.

If we can project this power away from us I wonder if we could use it to fly by continuously falling towards a moving black hole. I know it would be the power equivalent of flying by lifting yourself, but with powers it seems that the laws of physics are more of a suggestion than anything absolute.

Shitty MsPaint to illustrate.

These are already good uses of the black body Breaker form. As the Tinker powerset we had pre-reboot, all we did was cut shit with alloy cards, have godlike acrobatics, make some good walls, spread joy and laughter to small children, and mutate stuff (read: ourselves) horribly. I have faith that Zion managed to figure out how to write better or do stuff better this time around, especially while being out-of-commission due to food poisoning.

You stand there for a moment as you try to force your power back under your skin, at first it's rather difficult but you quickly begin to feel your body hum with energy. It almost feels like you're a battery, and the energy inside of you refills when you reabsorb the armour. You're hit by the severity of your wounds once your shell is gone, falling to the side as your legs fail you. It takes you a second to notice through all the pain and blood loss, but once you do it shocks you back into consciousness. Your arms are gone, not fully or cleanly cut but torn and shredded beyond any use. You only have bloody stumps past your forearms.

In the movies revelations like this always cause the character's mind to go blank, or they bear it stoically, never letting their inner turmoil show. But you're no action hero, so the freaking out is entirely understandable. You can feel someone drag you towards the ambulances as shock sets in and the pain overwhelms you, tears running down your face as you're strapped down and fussed over by the paramedics.

Mercifully, the doctors inject something into a ragged tear in your chest and you swiftly fade into blackness, you last memory being Miss Militia's shocked stare.

You dream of collapsing stars, and a predatory hunger.

It's unknown how long it takes for you to awaken, but eventually you come to in a hospital room. You're wearing a mask on your face and a medical gown covers you beneath the bedsheets. There doesn't seem to be anyone else in the room, but there is a red button on the table next to your bed.

The rest of the room is all sterile white tiles and sheets, that bleachy hospital smell curling your nose as you breathe it in. Apart from your bed, there is very little else in the room, and even the window is covered with thick blinds.

Try to get up, you have to find someone.

There are no mirrors in the room, a realisation that brings some trepidation. You quickly look down and take note of the many changes to your anatomy. First is your arms or rather your lack of them. You already knew of course, but your heart rate skyrockets and you almost freak out when you really comprehend the damage. Most of your actual forearms have been salvaged but your hands are just gone, amputated at the wrists. The rest of your body is better, but better doesn't necessarily mean good. Your legs are heavily bandaged and strangely thin, much thinner than they could be.

At least your genitals are all right, that could have been bad

It's difficult checking yourself over with only stumps to manipulate the sheets and gown, but you manage with some frustration. It's only a few minutes before a nurse comes to check on you. She enters the room quietly, but gasps when she sees that you're awake and stops for a second or two before speaking.

"Oh, right. You're awake, I'll just go and get the doctor then. Please don't uh... black hole anything while I'm gone."

She's gone before you can really formulate a response to that, back out of the door and clearly hurrying down the hallway outside of the room as her quick footsteps indicate.

A few minutes later a tall doctor comes through the door, clipboard held in his hand. At first you're a bit sceptical because he looks like Ivan fucking Drago, but his nametag says he's a doctor so whatever. He's probably a cool dude.
"Hey buddy, good to see you awake. You took a hell of a beating back there." He leafs through the clipboard now, giving it a once over before turning his attention back to you. "Good news is, we've got Panacea coming in soon so you should have your arms back pretty quick. We took care of the other injuries when you got here, Medhall's good at what we do. Anyway, just thought I'd come in here to finish up some paperwork. We usually ask for names, but you're a cape so we'll just stick you down as "Unidentifed parahuman" unless you've got a name already that is."

Actually, you do.

This guy actually does seem pretty chill so far, it kinda makes you feel bad for not coming up with something seeing how enthusiastic he is. "Nah, sorry. I was kind of busy fighting at the time, and then I was freaking out. Unidentified does me fine."

He asks a few more questions after that, mostly concerning things like whether you were allergic to anything or any negative reactions to stuff. Because as he put it. "Turns out that Assault's allergic to one of our painkillers, we had to get him here once and if he hadn't made that public in an interview he might have died. So it's best that we know for the future, you get me?"

You respond in the affirmative, luckily you aren't allergic to anything and you don't have any preexisting conditions (apart from lack of arms) so it's over pretty quick. He leaves after a while, with a quick smile towards the nurse who's replacing your IV. You haven't got much else to do, so you mostly just wait until Panacea gets to you.

It's actually a few hours until she turns up, and the first thing you notice is how tired she looks, jesus.

[PANACEA: A member of New Wave, and one of the driving forces stopping the city from falling into total economic collapse. Has the power to heal any injury known except for brains which is attributed to a mental block, and certain rare cancers. People come from far and wide to pay for her services, but she also volunteers in hospitals.]

"Hey, you're the new guy right, who took on Hookwolf? Nice work." You nod in response to that, it's kinda cool that people have heard of you now.
She reaches out a hand, but stops before actually touching you.
"Do I have your permission to heal you?"

Yeah sure, go ahead. I'd like my arms back.

You are absurdly tall for your age, almost six foot and still growing. You're also blond and white skinned, with thin, attractive features and green eyes.

"Nah I'm good, arms were never really my style anyways." That seems to partially shock her out of her funk, dull eyes sharpening before furrowing in conclusion.

"Are-Are you sure? Really?"

The look on her face is priceless, you'd give anything for a camera right now.
"Hah, nah I'd like my arms back please. I was pretty attached to them."

"Oh god, not another Clockblocker. Fine, whatever." She reaches out and touches your stump, eyes glazing over as she concentrates. Honestly you kind of expected something to happen, she's like that for a good five minutes before she snaps out of it.
"Okay so there's a bit of a problem, I couldn't fix your arms right now. Whenever I tried to, the part of your brain that's in charge of your powers lit the hell up. So I decided not to risk it considering you're the black hole guy. I guess it thought I was attacking you or something? The good news is I think I found a way around it. They won't come back immediately, but they should grow in over the next few days. Apparently if I make slow changes it's all cool."

"Thanks, these mean a lot to me. If I hadn't already used the attached pun I'd be using it now to properly get across how grateful I am."
She actually smiles at that, before stepping back and letting go of your arm.

"Yeah, I get it. Jokes get old if you tell them the same way twice right?"

Somewhere else, she's frowning and readying a punch. You laugh.

"-ou"

You shake your head. "Sorry, what was that? I kinda spaced for a second."

She's at the door now, and looks back at you with an exaggerated frown. "Really now? I thought I'd fixed everything. Maybe you should stay in this incredibly fun hospital for bit longer, take it easy as you recover..."

You shake your head and chuckle, yeah nah, you need to get out of here.

"Sorry, I gotta go. things to do you know? People to see."

She returns your farewell before leaving, promising to send a nurse over to sign you out. It's not too much longer before you find your old stuff returned to you. Your shirt is ruined, but your jeans just look fashionable and the bandages make you look like someone trying way too hard to be cool instead of a hospital patient. On the way out, the worker who's signing you out hands you a card with the Protectorate logo on it, along with the cell number and address. "The PRT wants to speak with you once you're ready, they said you could call or turn up in costume."

Shit your mom's gotta be freaking out, a quick check with the man on the desk tells you that you've only actually been unconscious for a day, but that's still way too long.

Go home, you're in so much trouble.

You take the bus home, luckily the driver doesn't ask for your disabled bus pass. It'll be a good hour before you get close to your house, and this gives you a lot of time to think on your approach, it'd probably make the most amount of sense to just tell your mom and brother about your powers but you don't know how your Father would react. The other option would be trying to lie to them, you've no doubt that telling them that you were caught as collateral during a cape fight would work, so long as nobody's recorded your face.

You can't check yet though, because your phone is an old model and doesn't have internet access. You'll have to make the choice before you get there.

Most powers work thanks to alternate reality mumbo jumbo made by space whales, this gets explained at some point in the Queen chapter. The main example there is Scapegoat, who literally switches parts of your body to other realities. People with invulnerability like Alexandria and Scion are living portals that send damage to other dimensions. So us being a connected to our other self isn't farfetched.
>>
>>2595427

It's not murder if they can't find a body. It's just another deadbeat running away from his family. Have to eat the car too to make the story believable, but that won't be too hard to pull off.

Yes,yes, I'm trying to explain how the power works but is complicated. Eidolon killed the evil Alexandria with powers that overlap many dimensions. I'm guessing the stasis works by constantly portaling her body to some point in the past or something like that.

Eh, maybe maybe not. We got our stuff a little later in life. That helps. It's also not necessarily a world ending power yet. We're already fairly fucked, once shit really hits the fan...our ability to deal with all the crap life throws our way is gonna help a ton.

Oh thanks, for a moment there I had my hopes up about this quest.

And? We're not a tentacle thing from power experitements or a perpetual evil 12 year old. Honestly going from a semi normal pretty boy that takes care of himself, to a blackhole clad warrior sounds awesome.
>>
>>2595642
This is incorrect, you merely have his voice. Your actual character is different in multiple ways, and has had different experiences than before. Plus even old Barnaby was less joker and more heroic most of the time.

Probably something mental. Remember how we remembered the hunger and feasting on stars? The more we use it the more it wants to be used probably. Eventually our hunger will begin to override our reason, and then, well.

The destroyer will be made manifest.

We shall consume...everything! EVEN THE ENDBRINGERS!!

Cool. We almost made Hookwolf job and saved Armistice. Different Barnaby.

That sounds boring. Fighting the Endbringers sounds neat, except terribly dangerous. Good for us if we go full hero, which sounds fun honestly. But the consuming everything, including the few people we like, sounds kinda lame and edgy.
>>
>>2595674

I mean black hole beats everything, even their bullshit.

A black hole doesn't age, doesn't burn, can't be drowned ect. The only one who might be a threat is featherbitch and even she can only win through tinkertech bullshit and or ungodly strong applications of telekinesis, and even then they might not work.

So...instead we flip our weird power use on it's head. We're essentially a super defender, anything that tries to harm us and ours get's obliterated. Or very nearly. Hell we can even warn em. We're a walking Singularity.
>>
>>2595718
Yup. We're still human, so far. Time to train I say,
>>
>>2595726

Nope. They stopped hitting the "USE ME YOU UNBELIEVABLE FUCK UP" button and trying to kill their host who wasn't working right, but fucking with their heads was always a go. Hell if you use it more it would fuck with your head more because it was 'helping' you because you were such a good host and it would hate to lose you.

It's a pokemon game where you're the pokemon and the shard can only use one of you. If you're a shitty pokemon they're going to drop your ass at the first chance they can so they can train a decent one and stop wasting their time.
>>
>it would fuck with your head more because it was 'helping' you because you were such a good host and it would hate to lose you.

Just like how our power wanted us to inject a mutagen in us or that he spoked that even if we were slowly dyong that everything was fine and we shouldn't worry.

Or currently with "Another, more Powerful choice."?
>>
You're a bit uncomfortable lying to your mom, but there's no telling what will happen if your dad finds out, and he will find out if you tell either of them. You're going to have to lie about what happened.

You rehearse it in your mind, you got caught by Hookwolf and Panacea helped you. It's all cool, you can do this.

It takes a second or two to muster the courage to knock on the front door, what if they don't believe you? There weren't many other people around but what if someone recorded it.

Ah hell, best to just get it over and done with. You kick the door a few times, and wait for it to open. It's answered by your mom, and for just a second you can see her face wracked by grief. She looks at you for a second as the two of you stand there before slapping you across the top of the head.

"BARNABY! What the hell, where were you? I thought- I thought..."

She trails off as she notices your arms, the stumps covered by bandages.

"Oh god."

Oh shit, she's gonna start crying,

"Wait, mom it's not that bad I swear. It'll grow back, Panacea helpe-" And now she's hugging you while crying, you need to stop this before you start crying too. "Eh, maybe we should go inside." She sniffles at that, and slowly pulls you back inside. Once you're in she starts fussing over you, sitting you down in the living room while rushing about to make sure you're comfortable. She also calls down Mike, who's much happier upon seeing you alive and well, though certainly saddened by your sans-arm status.

You explain the situation to the two of them, although you make sure to edit out your superpowers from the situation and add in a convenient Panacea. You think you've convinced them, Mom's clearly too distracted by your injuries to cross examine your wounds, but she is relieved when she hears that they'll grow back. Until then you're stuck without arms, and at home.
An hour or so later, you're sent up to your room with strict instructions to rest and save your energy.

Father calls a few hours later, he's not coming home tonight.

It is the afternoon, and you're currently sat in your room. It's messy, but it's yours. You have a large wardrobe and a small table next to your bed.
What are you going to do for the hours you have left today?

Our only hope is either to find some alternative means of brain surgery, or convince Pan-cakes that potentially turning Rebecca's brain into a pancake isn't so bad compared to the alternative.

>>2595885
This is so unfair.
>>
>>2595880
Anon, that's not how physics works. "darkness" isn't a tangible thing that a black hole can suck up. Darkness is simply a term used to describe the ABSENCE of light.
>>
>>2595893
Well isn't grues darkness a gas?

Grue's darkness was, far as I can tell, a denser-than-air, nontoxic, nonreactive gas that absorbed like 99.99% of all electromagnetic radiation across all frequencies, and severely attenuated vibration inside it and inside anything in direct contact with it, so that even your own voice sounds like it's coming from the bottom of a well.

No, it's just "black hole spears" made me think "what, would he puke it out like Nappa from DBZ?" Then I thought, "wait would the puke be puke or a black hole?" Thrn I thought, wait if it's just regular puke, would it just get sucked up by our mask? Do we basically have a toiler built in our armor? I realize how fucking weird this train of thought was. I was just working and mulled it over out of boredom.

It'd likely get sucked up though, so that's actually a weird bonus to our powers. You know when someone shits themselves in fear? Or needing to use the bathroom at an inopportune time? No one will ever know with us, as long as we take off off our pants before we armor up. Also, people were tossing around names like Graviton, but what about Void or Devoid?
>>

We could also go Null, Nihility, Vacuity, Hollow, Dark Knight?, Black Knight?, Void Knight, a few other things if we focus less on the black hole aspect and think of the armored aspect too.

One of the cool things Worm did was make Skitter's defection to the villains natural and inevitable given the circumstances. If Barnaby, as a result of our horrible dice rolls, gets mistreated by Armsmaster or given dicks instead of hands by Panacea or murders his dad, maybe the story will flow towards villainy - alternatively, maybe life will be nice to us for long enough that we end up in the wards.

No sense in forcing heroism or villainy when we can let the story play out post by post.

For a name, how about Horizon?
>>
>>2596484

Some possible names for Barnaby's cape persona:

> Schwarzschild

> Event Horizon

> Singularity
>>
>>2596338
Why knight, though? I get that Zion's reference for our appearance is inspired by that same image, but it's not like any other person would (or should) have even the slightest chance of making those features out. Whether he's become or is a cloaked by his power, what is seen wouldn't even really be capable comprehension. All anybody should see is an ever shifting area of space with the silhouette of something humanoid. The only exception should be Barn once he gets a further understanding of his shard, but he only described it as "like" armor, and even then that was when he was in literal shock from triggering and potentially dying.

Or maybe I'm just nitpicking, because black hole armor isn't nearly as rad as being a literal event horizon to everyone who can see us, and an unfathomable void to those with powers capable of circumventing the perception altering effects of our own power. That personally why I like Hawking the best of all names given so far.

At least it’s not edgy, cringeworthy, or entirely unoriginal. Could do worse than analogue towards Barnaby himself and the perceived nature of his personal Shard. It’s also be intriguing if Zion were to implement it in the same horrific way Molecular Processing altered our genetics previously.

Just imagine that if we don’t continuously use our power to consume/absorb things. It will either gradually begin going out of control, causing it’s strength and naturally reality altering properties to fluctuate and the gradually weaken, only for the shard to begin absorbing our own matter to keep the pilot lit, so to speak.
>>

What I have to ask is whether this is a soft reboot or not. That vague recollection of infighting with Panacea seemed a bit too on the nose to just be a cute little throwback. I think in this sense, our powers should function similarly to how real black holes work; the more our power consumes, the stronger and more volatile our powers become, enabling us to fight and negate/absorb ever more powerful foes and powers/attacks. The consequence would be said volatility, leading to an ever lessening control over our own shard as it becomes increasingly unstable and powerful. Vice versa would be the exact opposite; weaker power and increasing vulnerability with the benefit of more fine control until it begins to consume our own mass to offset its lack thereof.

With one of the more dangerous abilities, and the addition that even other Entities aren't sure of its true potential, it'd suit the setting and also mesh with the Genetic Fragmentation we had going on previously.
>>
Still having trouble visualizing how this power works. I'm imaging a oblique cowl that forms over Barnaby, but does matter or energy get automatically sucked in the instant contact is made, or does it have to be consciously activated by Barnaby?
If it is the former, then why doesn't the cowl effect the ground Barnaby is standing on? Does the cowl not extend to the soles of his feet?
>>
>>2596553

You figure that power testing is important sure, but your family is a way higher priority right now. You have to do the rounds and make sure that the two of them are okay. This time, that means hanging with Mike. (Not that you need an excuse anyway, Mike's pretty cool.)

You knock before you enter his room, It's a bit bigger than yours and full of assorted knickknacks, all organised around a small TV against the wall. To tell the truth, the two of you keep most of your stuff in here as well, since Father is more than happy to break or sell things as "punishment" when it comes to you.

Mike's sat on his beanbag chair in the centre of the room, playing some fantasy game when you come in. He looks quite different to you, enough that most people don't think you're related at first glance. You got your looks from your father but he looks a lot more like your mother, with a rounder face and wider mouth. He's also younger than you by three years, so naturally he's a bit shorter.

You sit down on the other beanbag chair and start shit talking a dragon for a while, until Mike stabs it in the face with a pike. The two of you sit like that for a while, he tends to get pretty into whatever he's doing so you chill for a while before talking.

Unexpectedly, he's the one who starts actual conversation.

"So uh, you checked PHO today Barn?"

"Nah, kinda had other things you know? Why?"

He pauses at that, and looks over to you, an expression you can't quite figure on his face.
"That video of you and Hookwolf was up for like an hour before the mods took it down. I didn't know you were a cape dude, why didn't you tell me?"

Shit.

How you guys wanna handle this?

It looks like you are playing with the multiple earths idea from the original story. Essentially, have the events of the Joker!Barnaby's story have been overwritten by those of Succ!Barnaby's story, or are both timelines existing simultaneously?
The latter seems more likely given the spoiler at the tail end of the Medhall scene.

Ah shit, he probably thinks you were always a cape, and were hiding it from him. Time to nip that in the bud."It only just then dude, I didn't know I had powers either. I didn't tell Mom back then because then she might tell dad, and I can't deal with that until I've got my arms back."

"Damn dude, yeah I get that."
He's silent for a few seconds as he thinks, before his usual dumb grin adorns his face. "Dude, this is really awesome though. Not the Hookwolf thing obviously, but the superpowers thing is super cool. Do you know what you can do? Have you thought of a name yet?"

"Quiet dude, mom might hear."

"Right, sorry."
He looks kind of sheepish after your admonition, but keeps on asking a million questions about your powers most of them only capable of being answered with a resounding "I dunno" from your side of the conversation

"That's kind of weird actually, all the capes in interviews say that they knew how to use their powers once they got them."

Once you give it some thought yeah, that is kind of weird.

It takes you a second to think it through, but you reckon that as long as you're careful it should be alright. You just need an open place with lots of space to demonstrate, the ship graveyard would probably be good or you could break into an old abandoned building somewhere. The old Observatory just out of town still has a bus stop nearby, you could take the bus there. It's a good two hours there and back though.

"Yeah, ok. But we have to go somewhere else. I'm not activating my black hole powers while mom's downstairs. We're gonna have to sneak out."

But where to? The boat graveyard is a massive district near the Docks filled with old rusted ships and broken down buildings, pretty much all the capes in town use it to experiment with their powers though so getting caught is a distinct possibility.
The old planetarium would be costly to get to, but it's not even in town so it'd probably be pretty safe. It was abandoned a while ago after the city grew out that way and light pollution got too high.

I'd rather not head out of town with our kid brother when E88 has a very good reason to want to fuck us up and our power is awful for hostage situations.

We also definitely need to find out to what degree the manton effect limits our power. Hookwolf is an odd example given his changer form is inorganic so that might have allowed it to be more effective than it is on fleshy targets.

They already know what we look like, and one of their lower ranked members knows who we are. As a result they could tail us to the observatory, a place where we would almost certainly be a fair ways off from any potential help or other friendly or neutral capes.

The graveyard is definitely riskier as far as them finding us, but it also has the benefit of being more likely we will be able to get help of some sort in the case of a crisis.

In any case yeah, observatory is more thematically interesting and rule of cool is a thing for a reason.

An hour or so later you and a very excited Mike are wandering around the ship graveyard with masks on, eventually you find a small clearing in between several wrecked ships and get ready. You focus, and can feel the power roiling under your skin. The strange "full battery" feeling is back with a vengeance, and now that you focus on it you can really get a handle on it. It's almost like there's a core of energy in your chest.

"Come on man, this is gonna be awesome!"

"Stand back bro I gotta focus."

You focus on the same feeling as before, pushing the energy out through your body and stretching it out across your skin. You can feel the energy field crisscrossing and layering itself over you as it draws something out with it. One side effect you weren't ready for was the sudden feeling of emptiness, you appear to have run out of energy. You aren't tired necessarily, but the feeling of power from before is gone. Most likely powering your armour somehow.

And it is definitely armour, it even feels like metal on your skin. It doesn't have uncovered areas except your eyes, even places where you'd normally need to be flexible are covered with the strange black metal. It just twists and stretches when you need to move.

"YOOOOOOOOO! that's awesome dude. "

"Yeah man, super kickass. Hey stand back for a bit, I wanna try something."
You reach out and grasp a bit of metal boat, your armour seems to pull it in like what happened with Hookwolf but faster.

You know that black holes are supposed to pull stuff in, but you only seem to affect things that actually make contact with your armour. No wait, scratch that. It does seem that your [CONSUMPTION] has a very small range, maybe two or three centimetres.

You shake your head, that's a dumb name for it, way more evil sounding than you're planning on being.

Why did you call it that?

You're shocked back to alertness as your brother continues to gush about how cool your powers are. "Oh man you even get your own special costume, this is so cool. Kinda scary though, but super cool."
