You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Recently, Nino had fallen ill, or more accurately, suffered some sort of injury or side affect from overuse of her magic. You had allowed Elias to take her to the Mage Tower in order to discover what the cause of her condition was, and unfortunately, the news was not good.

"She's crystallizing?" Morgan blinks, the shock clear on her face. "What the hell are you talking about?!"

"It is exactly as I have said." Elias say simply. "Parts of Nino's body are slowly but surely being converted into living crystal."

Elias then makes a little motion with his fingers, and the collar of Nino's shirt is tugged down slightly to show crystal, green as emerald, seemingly emerging out of a spot on her skin like an abnormal growth.

You give a hard, intense stare at Elias. He better have answers.

"We've inspected her personal effects, and we we found this." Elias nods to a nearby table, where you could see several shards of glowing sapphire crystal lying on a protective cloth.

"Is that...?" Morgan gasps.

"Shards of the mana crystal we found in the Well." Elias' eyes dart to Nino. "Apparently, she found a way to smuggle a bit out without any of us noticing. We've concluded that the crystals reacted when in close proximity to her spellcasting. We found many of the original shards embedded in her waist, next to the pouch she had been keeping them."

Damn it, Nino. How could such a brilliant girl be so foolish?

"So... what are our options?" Morgan asks, looking at Nino with more concern than ever.

"Well, Naru advocates immediate removal of the affected parts." Elias says, nodding to the still sleeping cleric. "We're still at the stage where the crystallization is still largely superficial, and none of her organs have been affected yet."

You give Elias another hard stare. Were there risks to this?

"Every medical procedure has risks, even those blessed by Sol." Elias points out. "I'm merely a Mage with little knowledge on the healing arts, but I know that much. But there's another way."

"Which is?" Morgan asks, eager for answers to Nino's predicament.

"I say we should let this process run its course." Elias says simply.

You simply give Elias the withering, accusing stare you could manage. He should have a very, VERY good reasoning for this beyond his simple Mage curiosity, or else he would have much to answer for.

"What a I mean to say is," Elias' eyes flicker for a moment in response to your glare, "that this crystallization doesn't seem to be actively harming her. In fact, I think it's actually merging with her. Something akin to a symbiotic relationship."

"So you're saying this... condition could benefit Nino in the end?" Morgan raises an eyebrow skeptically.

"It is only a theory." Elias' eyes flash with wonder. "But so far, the crystallization seems to be focusing mainly on the areas a mage would normally channel their mana through. If such a powerful material were to fuse with those pathways, she could very well become one of the most powerful mages to ever exist. Assuming you agree with it, of course. It's only our theory, after all."

"You're not really going to take that kind of risk, are you?" Morgan looks at you, concerned.

"Removing the crystal carries its own different, but equal risks." Elias counters. "Ones we do not not currently know."

Despite Elias making a good case, you were still a bit skeptical of his claims.

And, well, you were in the presence of the best healer you knew. so you gently reach over and tap Naru on the shoulder to wake her up.

"Huh-wha?" She mumbes as she's roused, and then instantly snaps back to reality when she sees you and Morgan present.

"Aw fuck, did that bonehead try to convince you to let that damn crystal thing do what it wants?" She groans.

You nod.

"Of fucking course." Naru hisses. "Typical Mage, gambling with other people's lives."

"Oh?" Elias' eyes smolder. "Those healing rituals and spells the Church had perfected were only achieved through great risks and trial and error as well, you know."

"Don't you try worming your way outta this one!" Naru growls and turns to. "Okay, full disclosure. I'm totally not okay with Elias' plan, but, well, I can't really guarantee my way is foolproof either."

"Wait, what?" Morgan blinks.

"Look, I've seen and treated a looooooooot of shit over the years." Naru grimaces as she glances at Nino. "This crystal shit? I haven't slightest clue how it works, so I'm going into unknown territory here, so honestly, it's all up to you. But you know my opinion on this."

You nod to Naru. You'll go along with her plan of action to remove the crystals. You didn't trust having those things in Nino's body.

"R-right." Naru nods, trying to build up some confidence. "I'll do my best."

"Can't we ask Solana or the Church to help out?" Morgan asks.

"Yeah, but..." Naru bites her lip. "Look, if we go the Church, Naru's condition is going to raise a lot of questions that she's duty bound to find answers for. So, instead of being a guinea pig of the Mages, she'll be a 'ward' of the Church, until the clerics understand her condition inside and out."

Came in a little late and reading up, but based on the crystallization affecting the magic-using organs (whatever those are), I would give a guess that if the removal goes poorly, she could also be crippled as a mage. I really think we should go with the absolute best treatment if we are going to try and remove it. Nino probably would see very limited difference between death and being crippled.

"Okay, well, um..." Naru pauses as she tries to think things through. "The Cathedral is probably the best place we can do this, but it's really public there. Maybe we can have Solana meet us at the Monastery? But that might just make people suspicious and the setup there isn't as good..."

You gently pick up Nino in your arms and head for the exit. For her, or anybody in your party, you'd do anything, no matter the risk, and you were certain they would all do the same. It would be criminal to ignore a chance to save them.

You would take her the Cathedral. You would take no risks when it came to her care and well being. If the Church wanted to stand between you and her, well, they could try.

"Guess we're following your lead in, then..." Naru sighs as she rubs her eyes.

"A pity, but understandable, I suppose." Elias says mournfully. "Best of luck to you, Templar."

You give him a courteous nod before stepping through the exit portal, Morgan and Naru following close behind.

You and your small party navigate your way through the streets of Eisenwand, making your way to the Cathedral. It wasn't too far, but you would have to move through some of the busiest sections of the city. While you normally cared not for what the common folk thought of you, the fact that you were carrying an unconscious Nino complicated matters.

Fortunately, nobody seemed to go out of their way to confront you, though you did attract a lot of curious stares and whispers. Given how much your armor had changed, they might not have recognized you at first, but your association with Morgan, Nino, and Naru was already fairly well known, so it wouldn't take long for them to figure things out.

Well, at least the guards weren't out to harass you. They didn't really have any hard evidence of wrongdoing, after all. And the sick and injured being taken to the Cathedral was not an uncommon sight.

However, it wasn't the guards' attention that you were worried about at the moment.

"We've got a tail, trailing about ten meters behind us." Morgan says quietly to you. "What do you want to do?"

Fortunately for you, Valentia was standing guard at the gates, and she instantly recognizes you and Naru as you approach. She motions for you to come over quietly, and you note she's making sure your meeting is just out of sight of the other Paladins on guard duty.

"It's not the best time for you to be here." Valentia whispers, her eyes darting to the other Paladins. "There's an army of Templars marching their way down here and the head Paladins are up in arms about it. Dad's trying to keep a lid on the whole thing, but there's only so much he can do."

"So what you're saying is, this is a no-Templar area now." Naru grunts.

"That was always the case before, and even more so now." Valentia reminds her. "Look, I can take Nino and Naru in. Naru's still a cleric and Nino's a patient in need. You best just stay out here, unless you REALLY want to come in, but you'll have to do it quietly."

"Don't worry, I won't let the squirt out of my sight." Naru assures you. "I'll burn down this whole damn Cathedral if I have to."

"I can guarantee you that won't happen." Valentia nods as she leads Naru past the gate.

Well, you had to leave in Sol's hands, as well as Naru and Solana's.

As the gates closed, you take your leave before the Paladins take any note of your presence and you head back into the city proper, where Morgan swiftly links up with you.

Speaking of armoursmiths, how about this for another cosmetic upgrade:

We get a master dwarven blacksmith to make some alterations to our helmet to act like beakie helmet shaped into a dragon's head. It'll have a special visor that opens up like a dragon's gaping maw which also sparks to life when the mechanism opens it. And if we are able to breathe fire, the lower jaw will drop open so that the last thing our enemies will see is our face shooting out a gout of dragonflame.

And your tail falls for the bait, entering into the alley to follow you, and that's when Morgan leaps into action. With superhuman grace, she leaps into the air, wall jumps along the alley walls, and lands on the other side of the tail, cutting off his only route of escape.

Caught off guard, the tail freezes like a deer in a predator's gaze, and you now realize he was swathed in a thick cloak to hide his form.

"All right, just who in the hell are you?" Morgan growls, her bow drawn and ready. "Tell us and maybe you'll actually live long enough to regret messing with us."

However, the stranger doesn't answer, instead letting the cloak drop to reveal the sapphire armor of a Mage Knight. Without a word, he draws two wicked curved blades, one sheathed in flame and the other encased in a layer of frigid frost.

This was... not expected. Even Morgan hesitates at this new development. Why would a Mage Knight be following you?

A mage spying for the lord in the central kingdom? I mean there was that mage that was causing trouble in the town sewers.

You suppose there was no helping it. You draw your halberd, ready to fight. You recall in training on how to deal with dual wielders like these. Often you had to be cautious and always be wary of where both their hands were. But, on the bright side, they could only carry smaller weapons that didn't have good reach.

Plus, you had the Mage Knight surrounded on both sides. He couldn't attack you or Morgan without exposing his back to one of you.

However, it didn't take a genius to know that he would try to break his way through Morgan, who was the smaller and less protected target.

Lowering your halberd to present its spear tip, you charge forward in order to at the very least draw the Mage Knight's attention away from Morgan. Hopefully she'll find an opening.

As you charge forward with your halberd's spear tip, the Mage Knight easily bats it aside with one of his blades and he prpares to follow it up with his second. Thankfully, Morgan is there to help put some pressure off of him, firing an arrow that drills into the back of his breastplate and causing him to flinch, giving you the opportunity to back off out of his striking range.

Well, this Mage Knight was certainly quicker than he looked. Something you should have figured after seeing the Twins fight so much.

This time, though, the Mage Knight does not wait for you or Morgan to make the first move, and he lunges forward at you, both blades twinkling.

You're prepared to meet the Mage Knight head on and take his attacks, and for a moment there it does look like he's going to pick a fight with you, but then he does something completely unexpected.

With inhuman agility similar to Morgan's, the Mage Knight leaps into the air and starts running along the alley wall, making a mad dash to the open street on the other side. Looks like he was more interested in running than fighting.

"Shit!" Morgan curses as she's not prepared for the sudden escape move, either, and her aim is spoiled. "He's getting away!"

>Pursue the Mage Knight. You can't afford to let him get away.

You wave at Morgan and point to the fleeing Mage Knight. Perhaps she could track him to wherever he was running.

"Right, I'll try." Morgan nods as she sprints after him, leaving you alone in the alley.

This left you wondering what to do now...

>>

The Dwarves do have a lot to gain if they remain neutral by selling weapons and knowledge to both sides, but I'm thinking that the good old Demon Lord got a bit of a sore on his ass, and decided that it was time to go outside again.

Well, maybe it would be a good idea to stop by the Guild hall, just for old time's sake.

Sol, it felt like AGES since you've last been there. You wonder how things have bee going.

With that, you retrace your steps on the familiar path to the most popular part of the city. Outwardly, it seemed the same as ever, and it looked like that even with all of the drama and politics going on around the city, the Guild was just as busy as ever, with an endless flow of adventurers moving in and out. In fact, you almost swear that there's MORE people here than before.

Guess there was nothing like uncertainty to fuel the demand for more hired muscle, you suppose.

You head over to the font desk where the Guild Clerk is stationed, and see her dutifully standing there as always, a bright smile on her face as she cheerfully greets all of the adventurers that enter and bidding goodbye to the ones that leave. Her eyes wander over and widen when she sees you.

"Ah! Ashwalker! It's good to see you again! I heard you were on a long expedition!"

You nod in confirmation.

"So it is true! You haven't shown up for quiet a while and I was getting a bit worried!" She giggles. "I'm sure you've got a lot of exciting stories to tell, huh?"

That you do.

"And uh, I guess I should let you know right away, but there's been someone asking about you." The Guild clerk notes. "Look kinda like it's serious business!"

Is that so? You could think of quite a number of people who would go through the trouble of tracking you down here. But who exactly...?

Things were just getting more complicated by the minute.
