So a couple months ago I started my first evo game that gained a bit of traction but lost interest due to slow updates and competition.
So I am revamping the system and trying again!

How to play:
- Open an image of a species in the editor of your choice
(Use something that doesn't leave a blurry line, like a pencil tool)
-Illustrate a evolutionary change to that species
-Save as .PNG!
-Post your new species in the thread with a breif description of what change you added and why.
-Indicate what generation your creature is. (The starting organisms are Gen 0)
-A creatures size or name aren't required, but strongly reccomended.
-Joke illustrations and memes are allowed, but do not pic spam

Notes:
-Unless stated or shown explicitly, no species goes extinct. Old species can still evolve.
-Try to make you evolutions gradual and realistic, no species is going to evolve fully functional
wings or legs in 3 steps.
-Every 48ish hours I'll add a updated phylogeny chart to track changes.
-Every 3-4 days will mark the end of an era with a mass extinction, this is a rough estimate
based on activity so it might be sooner or later; I will notify the thread if this is the case
-I will be rolling for Random World Events.
-Have fun, and remember that all art skill levels are welcome, this game wouldn't exist without contributions!

Oh yes, a few more things before I leave this alone:

1. The creatures cannot see or really sense things, they are just aimlessly floating around the ocean.
2. No creature at this time is going to be able to get enough food to survive being bigger than 8 cm
3. Double check your edits and make sure they aren't done with brushes that leave a fuzzy outline, it is incredibly hard to edit and looks bad, the pencil tool and bucket tool are your firends!

The longer the Chak, the longer it's filtering stomach lining and the more nutrients it can consume. Elongated Chak have a higher chance of survival.

Derar have no centralized nervous system or organs, all essential parts are found equally all over their body (reproductive cells in their skin, digestion all over their body, ect). As a result, Derar who are cut in half survive as separate organisms. Dividing themselves allows for one part to survive while another is eaten by hungry Odra or Avax.

Clusters of Ibloh allow them to pass energy amongst them. Many Ibloh cells often go into 'hibernation', where they are fed by other Ibloh cells and provide hard cover against herbivores.

A type of Avax develops a photosensitive cell on it's upper surface. Using this cell, the Avax is capable of determining whether light is shining at it from above or not. Using this ability, the animal is capable of figuring out whether there's a sheet of Ibloh above it or not thanks to the Ibloh blocking sunlight, and waiting underneath until the Ibloh falls. Unfortunately, this tactic works against the creature during the night, as it thinks that there's constantly Ibloh above it and stands still.

As the Avax lies in wait for a prey to get near or hit the ground, it needs to move quickly when attacking. Larger front 'legs' allow Avax to get to a meal quicker.

Mobile Ibloh wrought themselves into existence, forged into superiority from their lesser, non mobile brethren.

The flagellum allow them to move up and down in water towards a peak "goldilocks" zone for optimal growth.

The Darkness Avax evolves to feed on people's evos by draining out their internal juices. Due to it's weak fluid transfer capability, sometimes excess fluid from the Avax will be pressed back into it's victim.

The Lestat Avax is born. Interestingly it reproduces by horizontal gene transfer both to and from it's victims.sometimes with unintended consequences.

As the lands above sea have grown and shifted, so has the ocean, causing pockets of Deep Ocean (7-11km), out in the open water.

Meanwhile, all Gen 0 creatures will be considered "Frozen" after the chart is posted, signifying that they are still alive and living towards the bottom of the ocean where they are not going to be able to evolve until they are "Unfrozen"

Thanks to being formed from several flat components, the inside of the Cublo is hollow and usually filled with water. Some Cublo have developed valves to pump that water out and pump some of the oxygen they produce in, using the cavity to achieve buoyancy.

The Symbiotic Ibloh is a curious yet somewhat common occurance when the cube and mobile Ibloh blobs impact into each other. The two are mutually cooperative, with the relativly flat and square mobile ibloh latching onto a side of the cubes. These new gestalt organisms have something akin to specialized cells in the in the form of different macro organisms.

If the wto Ibloh comingle long enough, the proto nerves of the flat species will bore into the cubes due to the tubes of the cubes (that rhymed) piercing the flat species and creating a vector for transmission.

Larger colonies of these "smart cubes" tend to exhibit greater survivability than either individual species.

A generation has passed, a menagerie of varied creatures to take its place. Astori continues to grow, creating even more lands for these small ones to explore.

the Lightseeker has developed multiple new organelles within it's own body, ever increasingly complex structures that drive more complex behavior. Adaptations brought about by not only evolution but horizontal gene transfer with other species of Ibloh. These gained adaptations, while similiar, differ from it's kin in being more centralized.

Lightseekers are solitary unlike most Ibloh, and still reproduce via binary fission. Lone Symbiotic Ibloh can often be found pairbonded with the lightseeker.

These compartivly titanic blobs of Algae like organisms move as a gestalt superorganism. Individuals within the colony will specialize to benefit the whole, meanwhile a relativly constant flow of Ibloh trade in and out of the center mass, absorbing light, propelling the colony forward.

These organisms are a favorite of predators.

To outrun and out-maneuver others, a species of Derar starts to grow stumpy legs on its "skirt", allowing for a burst of speed as it hobbles along the ocean floor or clumsily swims.

To protect against predators, the Ibloh Slime becomes host to a specific strain of bacteria that produces a chemical that breaks down the membranes of cells. The Ibloh itself is immune to the chemical, thanks to it's cells being covered in a secondary membrane made of a different compound.

Some Avax have been unlucky enough to try and eat a >>2627797. Surprisingly, not all of those Avaxes died: some had a mutation that caused their cell membranes to incorporate proteins that counteract the Ibloh Slime's poison. Some even began utilizing the Ibloh Slime to their advantage, holding it in the stomach until finding a tasty derar and vomiting it out, killing the prey swiftly and often turning it into much more easily edible mush.

Finally QM, any chance of during your next phylogeny update, that you give brief outlines of each species as well as their names? Or at the very least, put the names underneath each picture. Trying to keep track of each of these different species as well as what sets each generation apart makes it a bit tricky at times to remember what all does what.

Also, are we allowed to evolve from a frozen species if we are able to justify it? I want to try something with the Derar that isn't infested with parasitic Odra, or evolved to perform symbiotic relations with it.

1 A: Honestly the Yellow sun is pretty much like ours, though it releases a tad more blue light. The red is similar to a red dwarf (if a bit big to be a dwarf) and releases mostly red light, but still gives off the whole spectrum.

As for the oceanic Ph, probably around 8.3, a bit more base then ours.

As the ecosystem expands, more bio-matter begins to fill the oceans. Including detritus and rotting bits of other species, food for the scavenging Derar. Thanks to this increase in bounty, the over all size of many Derar expand.

This increase is not only in quantity, but variety of composition. Some Derar start reacting to certain chemicals they ingest in interesting ways. Primary of which is the buildup of rather toxic byproducts. The Derar release this toxicity by emanating it into their surroundings.
Despite the rather beneficial protection the Odra provide the Derar, many Derar grow larger and live longer without a second species draining them of valuable nutrients. Their toxic nature also acts as a form of protection.

Compared to the ocean as a whole, the conditions of isolated floating puddles are easier to adjust.

As Ibloh grow in these puddles, the puddle's pH change from the various biological processes of some species. As these species of Ibloh produce inhospitable environments, most are forced to either dive back down into the ocean below or die to their own makings. A few choice specimens, however, have adapted to survive in these more acidic conditions.

These hanging Ibloh, now acclimated for acidic conditions, create acidic compounds in the waters they inhabit. While the oceans are large enough to completely negate this localized effect, the floating bodies of water are more than capable of becoming several pH lower than normal. This results in a few bodies of water completely dominated by this new strain of Ibloh.

With the surfacing of new floating ecosystems, and the subsequent take over of many of these ecosystems with an abundance of plant matter (ie >>2642285 >>2642728 and the presumed base Ibloh), the Derar are met with an alternate food source. Despite originally being scavengers, some have developed ways to digest the Iblohs before consuming them. Two of the most readily avalible methods are puking out their stomach acid onto their food, or Evisceration, literally puking out their stomach onto their food in order to externally digest it.

While not fully capable of eating plant mater quite yet, these Derar grow quite quickly on the floating islands due to the abundance of a new food source.

Taking a more active approach to filter feeding, some Midnight Chak have developed biolumencent stripes near their stinging antennae. These patches glow a soft, warm light that is only visible at close distances. When an Anomalodra comes in close vicinity, they are drawn to the rear end of the Midnight Chak, and either flee when first stung or get entangled in the antennae. Then the Midnight Chak waits for the Anomalodra to decompose and provide a close and abundant source of nutrients to filter. Once the prey has decomposed enough, the Anomaldra disentangles the corpse and continues on its way.

As the Mollusk Avax and Slime Avax share the same diet, it is not uncommon to see the two creatures competing over the same Derar. Over time a new, unusual behavior began to emerge however. While in the past Avax species would hinder each other in their efforts to hunt, now they showed a semblance of cooperation: the bigger, tougher Mollusk Avax would protect it's smaller ally and distract the Derar, while the Slime Avax would inflict deadly wounds on the prey using it's potent corrosive Ibloh.

While the Avaxes will cooperate if they meet each other during a hunt, they will not attempt to stay together afterwards or seek each other out for other hunts.

The Stevar are experiencing a blossoming era. They live one the edge of the shore and overall are able to survive quite some Angulax attacks. They procreate by dividing themselves and now find themselves in large colonies. Clumped up, they gain the ability to merge with other Stevar, basically existing as separate organisms in one body. This gives them the benefit of exchanging food and energy, but also genetic material, leading to healthier offspring.
Btw, please use the pencil tool, not the brush. It doesn't leave fuzzy edges.

Diet: Photosynthesis through head, scavenger through bottom mouth
Size: varies with number of merged Stevar, 3-8 cm long, 2-5 cm tall
Traits: Flexible cell membranes, can merge and divide with other stevar.

Having become immobile, the Deraodra faced a big problem: being unable to exchange genes with each other. They have managed to solve it thanks to the agile Finned Odra. The Deraodra now forms patches of skin free of Odra symbiotes, from which the Finned Odra can feed. These patches produce and absorb gametes, which stick to the mouth of the Finned Odra after it finishes eating and are carried to another Deraodra.

I really don't mean to try to put anyone's ideas down, so feel free to shout me out if I am stepping out of line, but can species even get this big yet?

The last size tolerances we were provided were only 10cm outside of water. I get that a 'colony' of individuals can somewhat bypass this rule, but this looks to be on scales of 10's of meters large in diameter, with 100's of meters squared of surface area. Especially when this is outside of water, and dangling in giant spheres in the air. With no external support.

With all species still finding their habitat in water rather than on land, they would typically not have the structural integrity to maintain such rigid shapes capable of supporting such a load. At least not for several generations until they manage to figure out how to live on land.

Not to mention that the other colony species tend to easily fragment and disassociate from the whole if too greatly disturbed, they don't maintain convergence that well.

I agree, while I like the idea, that the evolution into biome-changing floating bubbles has been fast. Maybe we can come to peace with it if you elaborate and scale it back. How many of these bubbles would exist, what are the conditions, how long do they take to form, how often does it collapse?

The Angulax, considering it's small size would no longer have to worry about waves near the surface, I imagine that it would be mych easier for it to attack stevar while they moved to the surface to collect light. Also moving about the iblih collumns.

Alright, thanks. In my mind, the Stevar didn't emerge from the water yet, they just go to shallow waters. But both Stevar and Angulax are probably fighting it out amongst the waves, right on the shore line.

The bubbles shown in >>2644123 and >>2642728 are extremely old, they took thousands of years to form.

Most Polyglo colonies don't cover their island entirely, being limited to a few net-like congregations on the surface of the water like in this picture, although those congregations are still pretty big in relation to other organisms. In these congregations, the vines are used not to keep the structure from collapsing but to keep it from falling off the floating island. These small colonies take less than a decade to form, with the exact time varying depending on size.

On an island with a lot of the smaller colonies, a large colony that takes up the entirety of the surface of the water may eventually form, the process taking hundreds of years. Rarely, these colonies may construct a dome over the terrestrial portion of the floating island, fully encasing it.

The acidic hanging Ibloh grow in length. This allows them to filter more chemicals from the air and put them to use. Aside from changing the pH, they also put chemicals in the water that stump other Ibloh's growth. This is an effective defence mechanism against smothering Polyglo, keeping them at bay.

Let's call these 'Ibac'

Consider it a sort of compromise for having "magic" in a world without going the stereotypical route. (aka im kinda chopping and screwing how some natural forces work to get an interesting setting)

Basically the planet has wonky ass magnetic and electrical fields, and a few other non-existing forces that are acting with eachother to cause floating islands

Also only a few of the islands are super big, and have smaller ponds with land in them (think 4m at the smallest) So while technically Polyglo are possible it is gonna take a while for it to encase a whole bubble

The Anomalodra has to be quicker to get larger and better equipped prey like the Midnight chak. Its front fin envelops its head like a collar and grows stronger muscle fibre. With a strong snap like and umbrella closing, it can propel the Anomalodra faster in short bursts.

Devvar of the Over-lands has developed a larger "skirt" to secure themselves to the bottom of the landmasses with suction, causing a deformation on the sucker pad while clinging. The other side then lifts and systematically cleans an area of all scraps and stray Ibloh

The Jumpod find its hunting ground underneath floating islands. Over time, they develop sensory cells that can "see" the electromagnetic field holding up these island. This way it finds its way into overhead Ibloh more easily.

The Pouched Angulax's water pouch can now filter oxygen out of the air around it. While they still need to go to the water to lay their eggs. The Pouched Angulax could survive on land theoretically their entire life.

The Slimes develop pressurized bubbles that can expand and contract, this enables them to make fast movements. This new ability is used to ambush and chase after small prey.

Some of the Mollusk Avak didn't cooperate with the Slime Avak, in fact they instead started dedicating more of their hunting efforts to said Slimes Avak and developed tougher skin and multiple eyes covered by a transparent black shell to protect against the Slimes poison and more spikes to they can ram into the slimes and kill them.

The Mollusk Avak will have to rapidly improve in the deep ocean if it wants to survive the increasingly deadly competition. The only reason it hasn't gone extinct yet is do to the fact that its hard shell plus small size make it a unappealing meal to bigger predators.

Noted changes: Slimmer body and longer stronger fins to improve speed. Rear-facing graspers used as oars during high-speed movement. Divoted photosensitive clumps on side of the head to help pinpoint prey. Larger mouth to swallow prey whole as they no longer have graspers to hold prey.

Communication is important for cooperation, therefore Avaxes with features suited for transferring information were more successful. Both of the Avax species developed the ability to infer cues from the movement of a pair of appendages, the pair unique to each one. The Slime Avax developed an extra pair of limbs, situated near their eye. The Mollusk Avax instead opted to use their posterior appendages for signaling.
