/qst/ - Quests

> A spark was lit in darkness.

Around this spark, many gathered to take of its warmth into themselves. In turn many were kindled into mighty blazes that shone like beacons throughout the ages.

Some burnt bright and furious and quickly burnt themselves out, some devoured each other and grew into seas of shifting light, others burnt low and deep casting wicked shadows that danced and seeming died only to blaze up when disturbed.

Most simply flared and were gone too quickly to even flash before they were consumed.

> Stolen Magical Idea for a Quest

Shit nigga, you're a wizard now! You touched the spark of creation, now you're gonna burn whether you want to or not . So best get your shit together before you burn yourself out, become fuel for someone else's rise to power, or simply get stabbed because you forget that cosmic power doesn't mean invulnerability.

Mostly a rest for a possible dice system.

First rule: Magic is neither created nor destroyed, it's stolen!

> Where did you steal it from?

> Your Master, he was holding you back so he could use you for his own means, too bad he left a totem practically in the open by only putting mundane locks on its hiding space! By the time he discovers your theft you'll be long gone.

> Reality itself by fucking around with atoms, science, and a healthy disregard for safety protocols! Gamma Ray's ain't got nothing on your shit! Shame about the collateral damage but everyone probably thinks you died in the explosions anyways so you're good!

> The Organization! Sometimes they're Mafia, sometimes they're Yakuza, sometimes they're a People's Revolutionary Army. They always have money and guns, and sometimes they have Magic but not right now since you saw an opportunity to get yours and fuck them if they come after it!

Second rule

> The spark is the pure flame of creation, but you're a human with human limitations.

Magic is limited by Power and Understanding. For mechanical purposes it's divided into base elements of Water, Air, Earth, and Flame. Fuck Wood. Definitions themselves are loose because it's magic motherfucker all it needs to do is guide your perceptions.

Additionally there's Light and Dark, corresponding to the Physical and the Abstract.

> Spells will be made up as we go, and will consist of one or more elements applied as a concept. The player will progress by building levels in corresponding elements which will be represented as Die that can be rolled. Think element bending as a basic idea.

1 die to summon the magic. Start a flame, blow a gust of wind, gather dirt, condense water. It's your ante up to play.

A second die is required to create an effect. Turn the summoned dirt into spikes, direct the wind at something, compress the air into a blade, remove something from water, turn a flame in your hands into a directed heat ray. Pull metal out of the gathered earth.

Summon + Action is two die.

A third or more die allows you to add an effec5 Make that heat ray a fireball that explodes on impact. Manipulate limbs made of water.

Light die can be used to amplify physical qualities. Wind blows stronger. Fire burns hotter. Earth constructs are denser.

Dark die allow for abstractions of the concept. Wind can carry thoughts or vision. Water can mix materials together. Fire can be stoked for faster movement.

> You get three die to start, 2 have to be in the same element.

So what did you guys want to have power in?

Third rule

> Breaking the laws of reality doesn't mean you're immune to them

You didn't suddenly appear as a wizard. You get a non-magical background to represent your life as a normal person and your set of problem solving skills that don't rely on potentially predator attracting use of magic. Just as you stole your shit, it can be stolen from you.

> Write a reasonable short backstory 2 -3 sentences and if it makes sense for you to know it, bam! You got 2 die to roll for it.
>>
>>2628821

> Hold my beaker, I got an idea

Pick your die distribution, and gimme a couple sentences for a background and we'll start.
>>
>>2628877
I say 2 dice in fire, one in air.

Having been raised with a good healthy appreciation for the magics and what they could do, you routinely saw your fellow mages make the same mistakes. One of which, you were sure not to fall into. The formative years of a young mages life are never easy, and often times they are rife with poor decision making and impulsive study directions. You knew that if you wanted a leg up on your fellows, you'd need some magics that were complimentary. So, you went with fire and wind, knowing that wind can fan a flame until it roars into an inferno, but also that fire can deplete the oxygen around it. This way, if you needed to kill something with fire, you could stoke a huge one, and if something was immune to fire, you could simply suffocate it. A fool proof way to start until your magic progresses to more potent levels.

You are Humphrey Billingsworth, heir to a magical family of scientific theurgists, theorists, adventurers and madmen.

Having lost several family members to more explosive attempts at direct applications of magic to the world, tragically they shall not be missed as failures as well as irritating competitors who nicknamed you "Old Humpalong" for your selecting a "safer" and more rational approach, probing the energies of the Aether until one day you lucked out and created a stable portal to a place of strange geometry and stifling damp.

Haha, now who's old "Humps" (an unfair title, you're still in your mid twenties. You'd show them now if they weren't ash long scattered.)

Your quick thinking and quicker fingers granted you a prize, a gem that pulsed and whispered and moaned into dreams now filled with sweat and promises of power and forebodings of vengeful possessiveness that you are unsure of belonging to yourself and your nascent power or the gems previous owner.

Well tough shit if they can even find you, possession is 9/10ths as your family always says!

With that in mind, the cradle is all too often the grave and while there's protection and resources here to nurture your first experiments with the gem, it can also be taken away by hook or by crook or just outright force if it catches the eye of an Elder.

> Stay in the Family home! Maybe you can seek out the protection of one of your siblings, allying with them for protection in exchange for sharing some of the power. . . Until one of you masters the gem enough to wrest it away for themselves.

> Flee! The outside world is more unprepared for you as you are for it. You DO have a degree after all, finding a job or a position in a university to sustain yourself will allow you to access the gem uninterrupted.

That could work, but the base strength of the skill will be very weak since Dark die create abstractions of the concept of "water".

So you could use one dark die to connect to another dimension, and a second one to open the path once found, but the size of the portal would be hard limited by the weakness in controlling the water itself. So it would be small, take a while to form if there wasn't a ready source of water, and require most of your concentration to maintain so you wouldn't be able to do anything else while keeping it up.

It's still early if people want to rearrange.

Or East or South or North or even out hahaha yes out into the world, beyond the world, I to the void itself to dance to pounding drums and sing songs of strange skies to the skirling of the pipes or screams of people twisted into shadows that bubble and sway like smoke in dark waters . . . .

You suspect that you went far deeper, and risked far more than your past explosive siblings ever did with their reckless endangerment of the body.

You will need to be safe, secure and HIDDEN FROM THEIR EYES THAT SEARCH, from prying eyes of family while you learn.

Yes, it's not safe here. You will need your own place to shelter from the tempest to come, to dive undisturbed into the mystery you've stolen.

After all, you're not just weak and insignificant on a cosmic scale but in the more immediate environment of your house you have no allies, and "not an enemy" isn't close at all.

It's just different rewards.

Staying in the Household means your room and board is taken care of, and you can access their resources for equipment or knowledge with ease.

However you have to explain why you need access to more specialized equipment/information, and other members will be more likely to notice changes than lay-people would which could lead to them looking into you.

Leaving grant's a greater degree of freedom and potential privacy, but you gotta spend funds on that shit.

Contacts stay with you, but there is some innate protection within the house of having rules against how people can or can't screw you over. On the other hand, those rules apply to you too and you know how seniority is a bitch.
>>
>>2629185
I mean it did have 2 out of 3 votes, so mother vote would have tied it up.

I'll leave it up for people to change their minds in light of what it means.

Basically structure + some security at the risk of being obligated to share your discovery or be forced to do certain jobs, or freedom to pursue your own ends including telling people to fuck off or betraying them without pissing off a large powerful organization that knows everything (almost) about you and where you live etc. And getting to keep any gains to yourself.
>>
>>2629185
People could even try to get the Household to fund a "community outreach" program if they want in an attempt to get the best of both worlds.

That would require some rolls and some planning though, and might end up with the worst of both options instead.

>> Unnoticed, you have 2 Funds. Your current research equipment maybe e taken with you, or returned for 1 Fund.

>>
>>2629185
> Please, ask me to world build more! I love that shit. Really.

Honestly I believe in flexible narrative, that it should influence crunch in the momen6 but not dictate it and vis versa. If people want to go somewhere or do something you'll still meet encounters appropriate for your ability unless specifically seeking something out.

Like.

It would probably be a very very very risky idea to revisit the scene of your crime, and I would recommend a lot of prep work first, but if you insist on going at it right away I'll give you the chance to successfully find that dimension again.

After which, well, you could get REALLY lucky but otherwise hey maybe a mage in Fireball class DID survive and he gets power by picking up the teachers staff after some tentacles coming from out of nowhere kill a bunch of people for some reason, including the teacher and any immediate witnesses to him grabbing the staff. Options yo. Fail forward. Use quantum Ogres.
>>
>>2629235
> Who has seniority

Everyone who survived Fireball class or comparable education. Pretty much everyone important as far as you're concerned since you instead did the boring and quiet work of opening extensions into the Aether instead of going for more immediate results.

You're like a grad student but without the job security or healthful coverage.

>>2629246
Yeah bro. Ypu got money, you got the option to start with a bit more money or alternatively to grab some equipment right now for researching the gem.

Since you're leaving the Household on good terms (as in nobody cares what you do) you can still return or ask them for stuff, but it'll be very noticable and you'll have to still buy it since you're taking it out of the Household instead of just using it there.

So the expensive stuff isn't easily accessible at the moment.
>>
>>2629246
Sorry, if you return the equipment before you leave you will have 3 funds total.

>>2629235
1 funds would take care of renting room and board for 1 year.

1 fund would provide a complete basic thaumaturgical research lab.

1 find would purchase a Van in good condition.

It's a flexible representation.

If you wanted to borrow money from the Household to start a business, with minimal resources of your own, no collateral, and no experience managing or running a business, there would be 100% a requirement for direct oversight and you would have to come up with a very compelling reason to fund this endeavour.

If you just wanted the house to find you a job in say a water treatment plant, using your science degree, I order yo perform some sort of magical research on the water that would be much more likely.

That would still mean coming up 2ith a *reason* to give the Hpusehold.

Or you could just apply for a job normally.

What about from a bank? Water companies shouldn't have bad margins, and we do have a relevant degree.

>Or you could just apply for a job normally.

> What about from a bank?

I would highly recommend figuring out a way to use your magic to convince them to give someone with no collateral, no experience in the industry, no business or financial background, and no money a bunch of cash to get into a market that is already quite competitive and has many legal and government requirements and regulations.

Like.

Damn son. You should have chosen to be a magical businessman not a magical scientist if you wanted that.

Luckily, magic IS an option.

Unluckily, Banks are institutions so even directly mundane controlling one dude means that other people will review the file and such.

In fact it would be easier to find a business that's already running and magic your way into a management/executive position and just hope you can get away with magicking enough people you have direct contact with.

And honestly I just run quest in order to worldbuild. The narrative is just necessary to give exploring it structure that isn't a list of shit I think is cool.

> So mind-controlling the smallest company to either seize a shadowmaster position or have the owner cede to us would be easiest?

Yes.

> How hard is this equipment to get otherwise? Is taking it with us suspicious?

It's nothing special and since you already have it nobody would even notice it was gone since it's all common equipment.

Getting it later would mean informing them that you were returning to research, and would require a proposal for the purpose of said research. Since it's common equipment though it would mostly be a formality.

Getting it from somewhere other than the Household would be more expensive.

You do have some social connections you can use outside the Household to access that sort of thing, and you can borrow the Households reputation but leaning on that too much could draw attention to you.

Ganking a company would be considered to be in poor taste if you were to try directly running it, but grifting a position for funds is nothing unusual if somewhat embarrassing, like living in your parents basement or something.

The Magical world ain't big on morality, and if you appear to be a somewhat slow and plodding researcher without the stones to seize true power carving out a comfortable niche that won't raise any flags.

But the more you do, and the more obvious success you have, the more people will take an interest in you.

Okay good enough!

Humphrey has purchased residence in 1 small detached bilevel house! It provides living space and an undeveloped basement which has his thaumaturgical research lab in! Humphry can roll for insight into his gem on a 1d100 once per quarter, with 75+ granting an insight. I'm going to say he has to reach a level of insight that is his current level +1 to progress Dark or Water ability, with the ability being increased declared ahead of time.

Humphrey has spent today looking at Water Companies and cannot roll for Insight.

1) Company A. A local well site and septic company, specializing in rural development projects. Small management team, family ownership, lots of remote work allowing Humphrey to be absent frequently. 1 - 2 Funds per quarter based on performance roll.

> Nestle' local water extraction plant. Corporate gig, meaning an extra roll required to convince HR to accept alternative hours to 9-5. Multiple positions possible, but higher positions will require tolls later to keep the mind manipulating secret. 1-4 funds per quarter possible, set rate depending on position.

> Water Rights brokerage company. Small company, the interview requires Household recommendation to get in. Very high risk of mind magic being detected initially, but low risk afterwards. Access to magical equipment for detecting and monitoring aquifers, and for transferring water between rivals aquifers - yes they steal water. Ironically less than Nestle. 3 funds per quarter. Household oversight. It is possible to attribute magical growth to experience gained here.

> local waste water treatment plant. You don't even really need mind magic to get this. 1 fund per quarter, but you have free access to the machinery for the water and can experiment on it with almost guaranteed secrecy so long as you don't poison the reservoir.

All jobs initially give 1 insight roll per quarter, with possibly more insight rolls available by becoming involved in direct action instead of just sitting back and collecting funds.

The Water Brokerage that trades water rights only requires a 60 to pass insight, and has theft opportunities - HIGH RISK.

The Water Treatment Plant can be upgraded eventually to a second lab with sufficient funds and equipment allowing another insight roll per quarter. This will require first learning about the current equipment there which you can spend 1 insight roll to learn, and will cost 3 funds due to having to integrate it into the current equipment.

A quarter will consist of one "event" arc that will be either dangerous research, making connections and socializing, robbing a local location for Funds or Insight, or engaging in magical conflict.

Because people chose to be active in the world, Household contacts are active and aware that you are looking for work. Once per quarter there will be the opportunity to check the Household for one off jobs. As well the Brokerage can be approached.
>>
>>2629614
Actually I am going to set Brokerage funds at 2 per quarter w/ 1 bonus fund optional by doing jobs whether you work there or not.

Nestle is 1 - 4 funds, but if you take the 4 fund position you won't be able to roll for insight because you'll be too busy making money, and the 3 fund position will make Insight require 2 rolls take the lowest.

Cash money or power.

Once you pick a job you're stuck there for 1 year because fuck cheese.

>All jobs initially give 1 insight roll per quarter, with possibly more insight rolls available by becoming involved in direct action instead of just sitting back and collecting funds.
What's the DC?
>1) Company A. A local well site and septic company, specializing in rural development projects. Small management team, family ownership, lots of remote work allowing Humphrey to be absent frequently. 1 - 2 Funds per quarter based on performance roll.
Is this an option or is this the main branch where the other 3 come from?

DC for insight is beating your SAN score of 75, except for the Brokerage which is 60 because you're around other Mages.

Less SAN = Easier to get Insight.

Company A is an option separate from the other 3.

Travel around innawoods, most difficult job to be observed at, chance for extra funds.

Compared to the Waste Treatment Plant which has the most long-term potential if players want to invest in it over time since nobody cares about it but it IS a static place and the pay is low.

Also who knows what you might find out in the wilderness . . .

Is it better to have more or less SAN? Is having higher SAN important for other stuff?
>>2629614
>The Water Treatment Plant can be upgraded eventually to a second lab with sufficient funds and equipment allowing another insight roll per quarter. This will require first learning about the current equipment there which you can spend 1 insight roll to learn, and will cost 3 funds due to having to integrate it into the current equipment.
Do any of the other options have this? Why is this the only one with it, secrecy?

Less SAN makes your DC for easy rolls higher, and for hard rolls lower.

It's actually going to be pretty hard to change your SAN.

Oh and yeah pretty much the Water Treatment plant is upgradeable because it's a big space with a bunch of equipment you'll be responsible for anyways.

The other places are either too high-profile, or you're out of the office.

I mean you could still decide to spend funds on upgrading your home/lab.

So the Waste Treatment could actually save you funds in the long run.
