General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Akaneki, near the Fighting Temple

Recently: You had a conversation about stretching yourself thin with Abigail, got an apology from Kai, left Laki's home, journeyed up the mountain in the heat towards the Fighting temple and found a friendly battle with an elderly breeder along the way.

[Hi!

Before we begin, I want to give a heads up. My new job is crazy long hours and exhausting work. I'm searching very hard for something new and ideally part time. I have this quest and some projects I want to dedicate some time to and don't mind living with a small income, just not no income. In the mean time I'm saving up a lot and continuing to live cheaply. The new job is pretty demanding health-wise and I don't know how long I can do it, but I'll do it until I find something else, save up a lot, or blow out.

We will not have a thread next weekend. Sorry about that. I'll try to run during the week but with the 12+ hour days and things only getting busier it'll be doubtful. They say we sometimes get early days but they say a lot of things. Really hoping for a new job soon.

I hope you guys are doing well. I'm excited to run today and have been looking forward to it!]

Dice is in rough shape. He’s just successfully pinned the Zoroark that was posing as a Croagunk, and now he’s facing off against a fresh Seedot. The harsh sunlight is fading and her side is being covered in the shade from the trees once more. Your half of the battle area is still bright and sunny, but Dice isn’t there. He’s right close to Seedot.

Seedot carefully backs up, getting it’s feet out of the soaked grass and onto a section that’s more dry.

“Endure!” you yell to him.

“Bullet Seed!” She shouts.

Seedot moves first, taking advantage of what’s left of the quickly fading sunlight to boost its speed. You know that ability. Chlorophyll. It fires a torrent of tiny green blasts at Dice, all of them finding their target.

“Dice!” You shout. The Croconaw is hit dead on with a thousand pellets. The explosions form a quick cloud that masks him from view for a second. When it’s gone, he’s laying down flat on his stomach, eyes closed.

But you can see something. His nose is sniffing hard.

“Hmm. That’s a nice Croconaw you have, by the way. Smart. But I’m a breeder. I can read his body language better than your typical trainer. Seedot, back away into the sunlight and hit it with Nature Power!”

“Flail! Hurry!” You shout!

“Don’t let that intimidate you. Nature Power!” She repeats her command. The Seedot is already well into using it’s move.

Dice is faster though. He rolls forward, then springs up with his tail. He has a lot more forward momentum than you or the Seedot anticipated. His attack lands right on, nailing his opponent.

The breeder almost shouts out, but keeps herself in check and watches carefully. Seedot spins and rolls across the grass, occasionally skidding instead of rolling when it hits a wet patch or a grassier section.

Uh oh! It’s coming right towards you! Fast!

Seedot skids, bounces, and slides along the ground, coming right at you. You make the split second decision to catch it. You brace yourself, position your legs in a horse stance (why they name it after some strange animal and not the common Rapidash, you have no idea) and get ready.

Wham! You manage to catch it and soften the blow. “Woah there!” Despite the nice soft catch, it still gives off that heavy noise. The little guy’s body produces a strong noise on the slightest impact, it seems. It’s hard to resist the urge to tap him or use him as a drum. “Are you okay?”

It shakes off the stun and looks up. It gives a confused, but grateful nod. You set him down. He immediately begins to aim and charge his Nature Power, though. It stumbles for a second, which slows the move down a lot, and lets Dice almost close the distance.

“Alright. Good match” The breeder shouts from the other end. “I’m convinced. You did a good sales job. I’ll pay handsomely to breed them both.”

Dice’s charge in your direction slows down to a confused crawl. He comes face to face with Seedot, but both pokemon don't want to break any rules or attack if their trainers aren't explicitly telling them to.

It’s unclear who won. Did she concede, or is she assuming a victory because you caught her pokemon.

I have no idea how to vote here. There's no real-world analog to Pokemon breeding I can compare to, so I have no idea whether this situation is weird, or even what it entails. We literally don't even know where eggs come from.

>Bella is too young to be bred!

Pokemon’s attitudes on their children vary from species to species, and individual to individual, but if I remember correctly from when Vlad had a clutch of Zubat, Pokémon usually imprint a while after the egg is laid, as opposed to humans who tend to get attached during gestation, then again more after birth.

You could think of it like a really fun sperm donation. Some people are cool with that and some aren’t. Bella grows quickly but I think by talking to her we can gauge if she’s there yet. And talk to Laki.

>>2636377
I assume artificial insemination is an option. In those sorts of cases.
>>
>>2636307
>You weren’t making a sales pitch.
>>
“I wasn’t making a sales pitch, but thanks. Let’s talk in a minute.” You shout to the old breeder as laki, Hana, Keira, Kai, and Abigail crowd around. Their battles have since ended. “Dice, you did great. I’m very proud of you.”

Dice beams! He also gently bites on his former opponent, Seedot. That startles the small pokemon for a moment, but it relaxes once it realizes there’s no danger. Just weird behavior from it’s perspective.

You proceed to heal Bella, who got knocked clean out. She quickly stops you after you only do a tiny amount though.

“What’s wrong?” You ask.

She makes another noise to let you know she’s against you doing any more healing. Instead, she pushes herself up and walks to one of the wet areas under the sunshine, and basks in it, working on healing herself.

“She’s become so independent.” Laki comments, sounding both proud and sad.

Has she really? She was just a little defenseless egg not so long ago. Is she just fast to mature, does she just seem more mature because she evolved so quickly, or are you just biased because she’s your precious little Belladonna?

“So wait, Herb, is that old lady wanting to breed Bella and Dice?” Abigail says. “That’s pretty impressive. And I don’t get impressed easily.”

“What’s impressive is that my little brother here looks older than you.” Laki comments, putting a hand on Kai. “And he won his battle.” She turns to Belladonna, who is watching but also holding her arms out wide to get the most sunlight possible. “I’m sure you did great, Belladonna. I’m proud of you. And this is a big chance, to have eggs with a strong mate.”

He battled? How?

You’ll ask about that after. First, you have questions for Belladonna and Dice. “so, you two were probably listening. That old woman wants to breed you. I’m not sure what it entails, but...is that something you would want? To make eggs?”

Belladonna ponders it. “Would it be a strong pokemon, like papa?” Gardevoir translates before Keira can. Keira looks like she wanted to do it and phrase it a little differently.

You have no idea how to answer that question, or how to feel about it.

Dice bites his tongue. Then he rolls over playfully. “If eggs aren't abandoned.”

(continued)
>>
>>2636552

"They never are. I'm not some mass breeder. I'm very selective, and any that don't find a home are donated to new trainers. I can write it off that way." The old breeder finally makes her way over. You feel a little bad about letting her walk all this way, but she didn’t seem to want to wait for you to be done. “Well, you two pokemon are certainly something else.” She begins to inspect them visually, using her cane to lift arms and tails, getting a little invasive. Bella and Dice both see fine with it though. The woman is clearly experienced at doing this without disturbing pokemon. “I know a Tangrowth and Marrowak that would love to meet you both, if you know what I mean.” She laughs. “What do you say? We’ll only need a day, and I’m no cheapskate. I’ll pay well.” She quotes a number. It’s a pretty big number. It’d double the current amount of money you have, which has grown a bit since you haven’t spent much.

You’re torn. You don’t want to leap in, that’s for sure. It doesn’t feel right. Still, you do remember meeting breeders before at your grandpa’s daycare, and they all seemed fine. He took care of a lot of their pokemon, actually. But you need to be smart about this. Your grandpa wouldn’t tolerate a bad one, so maybe your sample size in your experience is skewed. It feels weird, but pokemon are different about that sort of thing. Well, most are.

“I’d really want to meet the pokemon first.” You say.

She sighs. “You’re one of those types, eh? Fine, fine. I can understand that. You want to do your homework. But I’ll dock a little off the quote for the hassle if I have to meet you anywhere.”

“We could come to you.” Hana says. “Um, if everyone else is okay with that.”

“Sure. Here’s the address to my ranch. Don’t delay too long. Time is money.” She says, then begins to walk away. “Even if you decide against it, feel free to stop in for a rematch. Battles are my weakness.” She starts walking away again.

Belladonna looks confused. Dice is harder to read.

“You must be loaded.” Kai says. “Turning down that much money.”

“Soft Hands is just considerate.” Laki says, putting an arm around you. “It’s not like he’s against having babies or anything. Right?” Her tone makes it sound rhetorical, but not that rhetorical. The way her chest presses into her side also implies a lot.

“There’s more to life than money.” Abigail says. “Love is really important. Trading it for cash is just...it’s not a good idea.”

Hearing the usually sarcastic Abigail say something like that makes the whole group fall quiet.

“So, should we keep going to the temple?” Hana asks.

The group grabs their stuff and begins walking again. As you get moving, you reflect on the battle and try to figure out what, if anything, you’ve learned. These lessons can come in handy. But you don’t get a chance to reflect quite yet. Belladonna is dragging her feet as she walks. She usually runs with lots of energy, or rides on yours or Laki’s shoulder. She hasn’t fully recovered or anything, but you don’t know if that’s the reason for her lethargic attitude.

She did get knocked out pretty unceremoniously. She’s used to winning, and this was her first battle in her newly evolved form.

>Assure her that there will be other battles. She did great even if she was knocked out

I was going to look into it even if she hadn’t offered money. My understanding is that having eggs is a natural drive for Pokémon, and I don’t want to deny that from their life. I also understand that they’re less likely to desire long term romantic partnership or to be involved in the raising of those eggs. It’s about letting our Pokémon make their own life choices, even if they’re hard to empathize with.

Like with Bella’s rapid physical, mental, and emotional growth rate, or some Pokémon’s feelings about eating Pokémon, it can be hard to understand what it’s like to be a Pokémon.
>>
>>2636803
I dono man, I just see them as family and I'd never just give children away for money.
>>
>>2636807
Like I said, it seems more like a sperm donation to me. It’s up to the individual Pokémon to decide what they’re comfortable with.

Since we’ve got so many species amongst our crew, it’d be cool to take a sort of census on what they think about eggs.

I wonder how aquatic Pokémon like Wailord take care of their eggs. Do they sink or float?

>>Assure her that there will be other battles. She did great even if she was knocked out

“Hey Bella.” You say, taking a moment to talk to her as you walk.

She glances up.

“You did great. I know you’re a little disappointed because you got knocked out, but we couldn’t have gotten that far without your good work. Don’t let a knockout bother you. It’s going to happen a lot, and what's important is that we learn.”

She looks down at the dirt.

“You’ll have other battles.” You say, hoping it’s the right thing to say.

She kicks a small rock, but she does look up after and have a sort of appreciative look on her face. Her head turns when she sees a trainer walk by holding an egg, though.

“How did everyone else’s battles go?”

“I won!” Hana tries not to sound too excited. She’s still full of energy from it, though. “Tirtouga was amazing!” She hugs the turtle pokemon close to her chest. It flails a little and she loosens her grip, apologizing.

“I would have won.” Laki says. “If I....ah. Forget it. I lost. I can handle that.” Laki swallows back what she wants to say, trying to take the mature route. “I shouldn’t have made such a big bet.” She says under her breath.

“Cutiefly said it wanted to try battling, but well, she didn’t. That’s alright though. The other trainer was very understanding.”

“Conqueror conquered.” Abigail says, patting her pokeball. “We never lose.” Laki rolls her eyes and opens her mouth to say something, but Abigail preempts her with a correction. “Rarely lose.”

“I won.” Kai says simply. “Thanks.” He hands a pokeball back to Laki.

You can see the temple clearly now. The massive sets of gardens and beautiful stone statues line the way. Despite the gorgeous landscaping and clearly master craftsmanship, there's still a subtle humility about it. There’s nothing extravagant or gaudy about it.

“Lots of nude statues.” Abigail comments.

“I hadn't noticed.” Hana says, looking around, noticing everything.

You’re just about there, but your mind still falls back to that last battle and what you learned. You don’t want to pass up a potential lesson.

The main thing you’re taking away from it is...

You reflect on what worked well, and that was arena control. Pinning, knocking opponents out of the battle area, and tactics like that are underrated. Everyone always tries to win with a knockout, and that makes them unprepared. Plus, Dice is really good at it, and you suspect your other pokemon could do well too. You’ll definitely keep an eye open for opportunities to use tactics like that in future battles.

“No way!” A familiar voice pulls you out of your thoughts. “Herbivore! Ha, just kidding. Herb. Don’t get mad.”

“Max.” You mutter under your breath. He didn’t hear it, because he’d correct you again. You ran into him on a tiny island flooded with invasive Kecleon. He chose to have his Pikachu use Discharge all over the place to round them up, and made a point of hitting on Laki and Hana in front of you.

He looks slightly taller than you. You hope it's just an optical illusion since he's slightly uphill.

“Well hello.” He takes Abigail’s hand and kisses it. “Herb, why haven’t you introduced me to this lovely young lady?”

Abigail is taken off guard. He moved too fast for her to properly assess him. Still, she doesn’t recoil, and that says a lot.

He’s already moved on to taking Hana’s hand. “Oh, that’s the metal one, you-”

He kisses it anyway. Or at least, the gloved part. “Even with the sun reflecting off of it, it wouldn’t shine as brightly as your smile.”

She stammers as he moves on to Laki. “You’re looking even more lovely than when we first met.”

No reason to be insecure about our girls, nothing Max could do that would even temp them.

Because he’s confident to the extent that he comes off as cocky and derisive. He expresses none of the self-doubt Herb uses to make sure he’s doing the right thing. So he comes across as single-minded and selfish. Even if he hasn’t actually done too much bad.

Let’s at least be sure to call him Maxamillion. It would be hypocritical not too since Herb asks people don’t call him John.

“Hey.” You say, giving a friendly smile. He hasn’t done anything wrong right now, so you suppose you shouldn’t be hostile. “Abigail, this is Max...imillion.” You quickly add on. “And this is Abigail. You’ve met Keira, and my girlfriends Hana and Laki. And this is Laki’s younger brother, Kai.”

Laki and Hana both look a little surprised as you put your hands around their waists.

“You look like a taller, more handsome, and wealthier Herb.” Kai says flatly.

“Hey now.” Max pats him on the shoulder. “That’s not entirely true. I’m smarter, too.” He laughs. “Kidding. Relax. Two girlfriends, huh? You’ve sure gone native Herb. Can’t say I blame you. But girls, come on.”

“Excuse me?” Laki raises an eyebrow.

“Laki, babe. I’m just saying, you could have a harem of Herbs, not the other way around. And...woah, Herb, what happened?” He looks at one of your scars that shows despite your shirt. “You didn’t fall down, did you?”

“No. I-”

“He got it protecting Cubone.” Hana comes to your defense. “He put himself in the way.”

“In reckless danger.” Laki adds in, squeezing your side a little hard.

“And he got hurt from a wild pokemon.”

Max takes only a second to turn that around. “Guess you forgot about how pokemon battles are supposed to work, eh?” He nudges you in a sore spot. “Oh, don’t turn red now.” You’re not. “The only red I’m interested in is the lovely shade on your beautiful head.” He immediately pivots to Abigail.

You and her exchange a quick look. Despite knowing her the least amount of time, you can tell she’s asking with her eyes what his deal is, and she can read your general expression. She’s really perceptive. Still despite that, she seems pretty flattered. He sound so cheesy to you, but to the girls he always seems way more charming than he really is.

“And I haven’t forgotten about you, young priestess.” He bows. “I see you’ve changed your body paint. Very artistic.”

“I’m artistic too.” Abigail leaps into his attention. “I love to draw. Did I ever tell you guys that?”

“Come on. Let’s catch up. The monks up there are kind of uptight but we can go up there together.” He says.

>No thanks. You go ahead, we’ll be up later
>Sure. Ask Max about his adventures. Keep polite.

As he’s flattering Keira and trying to find a coin behind Kai’s ear, despite Kai being way too old for that sort of trick, you take Abigail aside. Hana and Laki notice, but don’t say anything. And Laki really looks like she wants to say something.

“What’s up, Goldentop?”

“You’re not falling for his act, right? That guy is a total....ugh!” He’s already broiling your biscuits..

“Don’t worry about me.” She says defensively. “I can handle myself around guys like him.”

“But-”

“Don’t be so jealous.” She says. “I’ve got to admit It is pretty cute though.” She goes back before you can react. What does that mean?

UGH!

“And what a cute pokemon!” He kneels to Belladonna. She responds a little to the flattery.

You just start moving to the temple, and the group starts moving too. Max keeps up and goes from girl to girl.

“What a douche.” Kai mutters to you. “You have terrible taste in guy friends.”

“He’s not-” You stop. You’re already at the temple gate. The tall, wide tower hangs over your group, nearly blocking the sky. The simple, but massive structure of wood sits atop smooth stone, surrounded by well maintained gardening. Sorbet and Cubone, who are usually less comfortable in artificial settings, look up in awe. It’s an impressive building.

“Greetings.” A monk comes to meet you. Everyone exchanges the polite amount of bows. I...oh, hello.” He bows extra deep for Keira. “Who has passed?”

“Nobody.” Keira smiles. “That I know of. I’m not here for that. I’m just travelling with friends.”

“I see. Is this everyone’s first time visiting? I could offer a tour.” He offers. Despite being an older, smaller, balding middle aged man in a simple cloak, you can see hints of very defined muscle tone here and there.

“Thank you, but I’ve been here before. I’ll show them around.” Max says. “Come on. There’s lots to see, everyone. We don’t want to cause the monks any hassle, right guys?”

>Yes we do. Please give us the tour, monk
>Let Max lead the way. You’re sure he won’t do it well

I think she was saying she thinks Herb’s jealousy is cute.

Also, it’s fair to not heal him, our healing presents a risk to us which is only mitigated by our emotional closeness to the target. Gardevoir can heal pulse him if need be. Or that wish thing she did.

>>

I'd rather get the tour from you know, the person that Lives/works there, and not someone who just visted. Especially when usually they have something they want to show trainers taking their challenges
>>
>>2637503
Same here. Hence why I voted to just not do whatever he's doing, even if it means touring the temple alone because they thought we were being jealous. Anyone who is going to fall for his schtick will fall for his schtick of we're around or not. Whoever does it's on them.
>>
>>2637503
Abigail is clearly not oblivious to his bullshit, and sees right through him. But because we immediately went over to check whether she was falling for it or or not, we come off to her as insecure and desperate to make sure she doesn't fall for it. Because by this point she's half convinced we're trying to add her to the harem.
Also, she just likes giving us shit about everything.
>>
>>2637503
I don’t think they are. It’s just that Kai is the only one who doesn’t get a kick out of seeing Herb riled up.
>>
“We’d like a tour please.”

“Very well, please, follow me. Please refrain from posing with the statues and taking pictures.” He says dryly.

“Come on Herb, don’t be rude. The girls don’t like-”

You walk passed him, following the monk.

“I like this take-charge Herb.” Hana whispers. “Not that I don’t like regular Herb. Or that you’re not usually a take-charge kind of guy. Or...I’ll be quiet so we can listen to the monk.”

The first floor is another showcase of statues, but there are paintings on the walls too. The wide open spaces are a nice change of pace. You’ve noticed that building interiors on the silands feel crowded compared to the mainland.

He describes some of the bigger statues and who made them. Keira seems impressed and entranced at the names, like he’s naming famous rock stars or something. Laki is also giving most of her attention to it. You and Hana are more lost at a lot of the references. Abigail and Max are whispering to each other, keeping very close. Kai is paying more attention to Gardevoir than anything else.

“And of course, this painting was done by Brother Kopo, who also has the honor of being our master chef.”

Your head turns so fast you worry it might whip right off. “Chef?”

“Oh yes.” The monk says. “Nearly divine cooking. Truly a master of his craft.”

Gobble crawls up onto the edge of a stone bench to be part of the conversation. You put a hand on his head. “Would he be willing to share some of his recipes?”

The monk laughs. “Of course. We all are. That’s why we’re here. Of course, one must prove their worth.”

“The battle master who teaches rare moves is also still in, right?” Max asks.

“Brother Mato. Yes of course.”

Max smiles. “Then come on, Herb. Let’s go prove our worth. We’ll take the challenge together.”

>Sure, yeah. Whatever you have to do.
>Oh no. You’re taking it on your own, whatever it is
>Ignore Max, ask more about what’s involved in proving your worth

“What’s involved in proving your worth?” You ask.

Max puts a hand on your shoulder “Don’t worry about that-”

“Oh, I suppose you haven’t been on our island long. It’s simple. You must demonstrate that you’re able to defend what you gain. A man who expands his domain beyond what he can handle is dishonorable, and such a man would be someone we have no interest in teaching.”

“But, how does one prove they can do that?”

The monk moves with incredible speed, throwing a first right up close to your face. “Any way you can.”

That was incredible. He went from out of reach to in your face in a blink. “Woah. Herb’s got to fight you?”

The monk smiles. “No no. We’re not unreasonable. And he has nothing I desire.” Hana and Laki can’t help but look slightly self conscious. The monk sizes up you, Kai, and Max. “We’d find an appropriate challenge, or allow you to prove your ability to defend yourself and your domain however you’d like. Fighting is the way most do it, however, it’s not the only way.”

“What are the other ways?” Hana asks.

“Shame is a powerful weapon. I’ve seen men who are much better fighters than me reduced to sand by mere insults. I’ve seen simple appeals of logic and wisdom help weaker men get aid in defending themselves against stronger aggressors. Pure strength and fighting prowess are good and fine, and it’s the path I’ve chosen, but results are what matters in the end. And before you ask, yes, it has to be against another person. You must demonstrate to your teacher that you’re disciplined enough to avoid greed and complacency and dependence, and strong enough to never put yourself in a position where you integrity comes into question.”

“Integrity?”

“Of course. How can a man who must always suck up to keep his domain, his position and standing and earnings and everything he has, be called a man? How can you trust someone who cannot truly afford to be honest.”

“Well then, I guess that means you and Kai are duking it out.” Max says, patting you both on the back. “Try to go easy on Herby-boy, Kai. I’ll find someone in my weight class after you two are done.”

Kai looks up dryly, clearly unimpressed with Max. You’re feeling a great kinship with Kai.

“My dad fought when he was younger.” Laki says. “But he took a challenge again when I was a kid. He said he was too old to fight, so he worked really hard and saved up enough to hire a stand-in.”

“A rare but acceptable strategy.” The monk says. “He demonstrated his worth by showing he can plan ahead, and defend himself through long-term discipline and foresight.”

>Challenge Max to a fight
>Could we do a pokemon battle?
>As the monk to give you whatever challenge he sees fit

Say, while we’re thinking back to things, remember when Herb played along with those grass girls’ rhyming battle style? Can we pick that up again? Maybe once we accessorize our Pokémon for battle psychological warfare?

Also, let’s take a bit of Gobble’s aura. His ability resists fire and he’s a good eater. If we pick some of that up it’d help. Or maybe Hana’s since she’s so tough.

“What if I cooked? I destroy my enemies by making them my friends.” You offer, producing the peppers the fire temple gave you. “I even have a special ingredient I’ve been saving. Maybe we could have an eating competition.”

“I don’t think you quite understand the point of the exercise.” The monk says, snatching the pepper from your hand in a fraction of a fraction of a second. “It’s not a demonstration of skill in some area, or some simple game. Convincing someone to fight on your behalf, and risk tying their fate to yours can be done with words, or shared interest, or simple material gain. But surely you understand that no man will put himself into your conflicts and defend your domain simply for a nice meal. A starving man may fight for food, but that’s hardly a circumstance you can rely on.” He doesn’t blink. “Keep in mind that you’re going to have to risk losing something of significance.”

He didn’t mention that part before.

“Like if he loses, his opponent can ask for a kiss from Laki or Hana?” Max asks.

The monk watches your face. You must have visibly reacted, because he seems “Precisely. I... Ah yes. I remember hearing about you know, Maximillion. You lost your last challange. I believe you gave up a badge.”

Max loses his confidence swagger for a brief second, before finding it again. “Well, I have those to spare.”

“If you did, it would not have been significant” The monk says. “It meant something to you. It must have been hard-earned. We can see pride in a man’s eyes.” The monk then turns to you, looking into your eyes. “Do you truly believe you can make a meal so delicious, so amazing, that either your opponent refuses to fight or a stand-in is willing to fight to defend your domain?” He offers the peppers back.

Have a good night Gobble! Thanks for running!

As to the Max business specifically, I can't think of anything that we could take away from him specifically that'd really be equal to anything he'd want from us. It'd be -very satisfying- to have the two have a 1-on-1 but the straight up fact is if we had him stop hitting on the girls he'd just do it to some others like our sister.

Who frankly I don't care overly much about getting with Max. He's a jerk, if she can't see that it's her own issue because she's her own person. if the fucker tries to break her trust or hurt her though I'd be all for Herb bashing him with The Pan.

The challenge is for defending what's yours, risking it to prove you're able to keep a hold of it. Honestly... Herb could challenge the chef for his recipes in exchange for his tools. If he loses he won't cook until he comes back to reclaim them.

Still want to punch Max a few times, just that the victory would be hollow since it wouldn't really hurt him much... Oh I know, his looks! Super self conscious, dyes his own hair! Not sure how to make that into a competition beyond what we did with the sailors early on in quest but it's an idea!
>>
>>2637905
That's kinda the rub with Max. Most anything we'll do against him will probably feel like a hollow victory because nothing with him will actually change. He'll just switch up his tactics or move onto a different target.

We also already have a few people who we did win with our cooking. All our Pokemon are out right? Herb should just draw the pan and say that we'll give anyone who wants to help us their favorite meal after (wink at Hana and say even that). Bet we would have more than a few takers of our crew who would be game. Herb didn't build a domain, he built a family and they look out for each other.
>>

Why not just not take the challenge? Not like it's mandatory. Good way to spite Max for taking Herb as an easy mark.
>>
>>2638964
Because the players will probably view not taking it as a sign of weakness and being unmanly for some reason.
>>
>>2638964
Max would just make fun of us again, and he'd see Herb as a coward. Not that we should care about his opinion, but I'd rather not give him more ammo.

And I don't want there being a chance of anyone even kissing the girls, so unless you kind find something else to wager I ain't gonna vote to go through with it. Also Max is an ass hole and will make fun of us even if we do kick his ass, so why are you acting like it matters what he says?
>>
zugzwang
>>
>>2638994
He doesn't even have anything we want though, I'm not proposing we compete with him. We should face the challenge, only to get something from their chef, not Max.
>>
>>2639039
What do you propose we wager for the monk then?
>>
>>2639065
Like some anon said, our cooking utensils seem like a fair bet. Maybe not the pan, since it's too important to risk for this.
>>
Laki should fight him and wager a kiss from Herb.

>>2638316
I imagine that’s what she’d wear to try to fit in on the mainland.
>>
Herb, flicking Max’s forehead as his two very strong girlfriends pin his arms: “Say uncle. Say uncle. Say uncle.”
>>
>>2639289
Herb is a pure boi tho, he wouldn't just kiss anyone who isn't his family or his girls.
>>
>>2639071
that's the entire point though, risking something precious to us. Honestly? I don't see much that Herb could gain from here unless the recipes they have are absolutely game changing. I'd rather just continue training our aura and pokemon if the girls wanted to try the trials and such.
>>
>>2639726
Man all this fear, remember everyone no guts no glory. Herb has to pursue his goals and early on we wanted to get a recipe from every temple. Don't bail on your dreams just cause something is hard or risky.
>>
>>2640799
There's not much fear, I just honestly don't see much in the way of equivalency here. If anything I'd say come back here later after we've done some proper training. I wonder what an aura challenge would be like?
>>
>>2640887
It's not about equivalency, it's about proving you are worthy to be respected by risking something you actually care about. It'll never be an easy challenge even after training, it's suppose to cost you something, that's the point.
>>
How does roll work?
>>
Rolled 392 + 10 (1d625 + 10)

>>2641067
In the options box you put in /dice xdxxx, the first tells 4chan how many dice to roll and the second tells it what kind of dice to roll for, to add modifiers you use - or + with the flat modifiers to change the result.
>>
>>2640927
But what would we want from him?
>>
We could use the recipe of our grandfather's that was meant to be eaten with the woman we'd marry. We'd make it for any who would fight on our behalf, for any choice of partners that they wish to share it with, on the condition that they win.

Laki and Hana would fight for the right to that food. No hesitation whatsoever.

Risk is that Laki and Hana fail us. Given Laki's history of choking in the big leagues and Hana's general shit esteem, proving themselves unreliable here isn't a small thing for them. Especially given what we're offering.

Risk to us is the former, honestly. It's also a hell of a thing to toss out there, since we know they'd take it seriously. If we get cold feet on making it after the fight, then they'll know we're not as serious about this as they are. If *they* don't hop in to fight on our behalf, then we know the chance to share it with us wasn't worth much to them in the first place.

Cooking is serious business. The monk should appreciate that.
>>
>>2641296
I'd rather just make it for them on our own initiative instead of as part of a competition.
>>
I'm excited to go to that carnival next.
>>
>>2641461
What are the odds Laki wins us an oversized snorlax doll?
>>
>>2642111
I'm hoping it's Hana with her robo arms winning him a pikachu hoodie.
>>
>>2642172
That would be absolutely terrific and I don't care I'd hope he'd wear it at least three times a week
>>
>>2640927
Then why take the gamble in the first place if you know you won't get something you consider equivalent at the every least to what you bet.
>>
>>2643080
Because frankly bragging rights are never fucking worth it.
>>
I feel like we should go:

>I could probably just ask Laki or Hana to beat you up, but I don’t think you have anything I want. Plus, you’re being creepy.

Besides, it kind of feels like he’s trying to get beat up by our girls. I think he might be into that. Not that that’s wrong, but find your own very strong girlfriend.
>>
>>2643620
I figure he'd more be trying to feel them up while they fought. Personally I think Herb could take Max though.
>>
>>2637760
>>Sorry, there isn't really much I want here that I would risk something of mine to obtain.
>>
One thing of particular note, it doesn't seem like we have to take the trial to learn how to cook or seek out that move trainer, just that it's a challenge that'd probably earn us some more prestige with the temples. Plus I just don't see Herb jiving with the temples credo, Herb has plenty of integrity and he's not one that sucks up to people or is dishonest. You'd think that him throwing his life on the line to save many random pokemon would count but there's no way they'd accept word here. Unless I suppose you count deeds, he could challenge Max to a "boasting" match and show off how he's helped the island and compare it to Max's. Still not a single clue as to what Max would have that'd actually be of interest to us and important to him.
>>
>>2645841
Wonder if a testimony from Keira's cutiefly about that whole dragon situation would mean anything? Or just pointing out how often we've turned enemies into friends through cooking and determination. Aside from all the stray Pokemon with us, there's the dragon we helped, that surfing Tauros, Jane, Gobble, Sorbet, most of our Pokemon really, and let's not forget we fought the champions and won (albeit with a handicap). I'm sure there's more and we have plenty of folks we could call to verify.

Then again it seems this monk would want a demonstration anyway.
>>
>>2646171
Risking something important to you for ambition’s sake just doesn’t seem like a good lesson. Herb can improve his cooking through practice.
>>
>>2646783
I get that and I agree. The problem being that we're dating two teenage girls who might see it more like we're incapable of defending them. Laki in particular might get pissy since this is her islands culture after all. It's just a shit situation all around. I just want whatever happens to happen and be done with this temple already. It sucks.
>>
>>2647024
If us rejecting this challenge leads them to thinking that, not matter the reason we state then there is something very wrong with them.
>>
We could bet the good rod. Valuable, useful, sentimental, but not overboard.

Plus I want to see Herb’s aura flare up like a totem Pokémon after he feeds off of Laki ‘s strength, Hana’s toughness, Abi’s energy and Keira’s agility via aura vampirism to buff before the fight.

Assuming we decide there’s a reward worth risking it.
>>
>>2647551
Holy shit, if we did that we would probably send the temple into an ecclesiastical panic.
>>
>>2647816
I HAVE PARTAKEN OF THE LIFE FORCE OF FOUR PURE MAIDENS

Well, pure of heart anyways. For certain mainlander definitions I’ve made plenty certain a couple of them are impure.

NOW FIGHT ME
>>
>>2647551
Have Gobble or Wailord on the sidelines to heal off of if they're cool with it. Herb am become death.
>>
>>2647167
That's a good point. There really isn't anything here for Herb. Nothing that's worth risking anything he cherishes anyway. He's already proven he can defend what's his multiple times. You wouldn't gamble your left arm to win a gold ring.
>>
[Heyo. Might have a new job soon. I'm not sure what this means for what days we run, but since it's not always like 12-14 hour shifts I'd imagine we'll run more. I'll let you know as soon as I do.]
>>
>>2650109
Thanks for the update Gobble, hope you're doing okay!

Thanks for letting us know Gobble! We're all rooting for ya. Keep your stick on the ice.
>>
I forget, did we suggest to a Keira that she have Shedinja hold a Silph Scope? I remember that Val’s Dad sells them.
>>
Gobble will comeback eventually.
>>
>>2652122
[Yup! But unfortunately not this weekend. I have two interviews this week so I may be switching from this really time intensive one.]
>>
>>2654141
Thanks again for the updates, Gobble! Try to keep cool for those of us stuck with outside jobs!
>>
>>2655769
[Thanks! I have a new job starting next week. That means we're on for next Saturday! The schedule is a bit all over the place but since it's less hours total we'll be running more often either way.]
>>
>>2658747
nice one man.
>>
You know, if Keira doesn’t want ghosts noticing Shedinja notice her, maybe she should put paints on Shedinja.
>>
>>2660053
That's a really good idea
>>
Since we rolled that 100 to knock up Hana, how would everyone else feel about a pregnancy scare? Or a real one?
>>
>>2660208
I’d really rather not. I don’t want to go there, tonally. I think we’re due for a good long stretch of relaxing and fun. Plus, I don’t want this to turn into teen pregnancy quest.

One thing I have noticed is a lack of people speaking Loanan around Herb. You’d think he’d get left out of more conversations, not speaking the native language. He’s lucky Laki and Keira are both bilingual, as well as all the other natives he’s met.
>>
>>2660851
I expect it'll come up sooner than later, especially as we continue our temple runs. It'd be fun to have Laki, Abigail, and Kiera teach Hana and Herb more of it on the road.
>>
Someone should really archive this or something.
