Clashing of sword against tough hide, fleeing former allies. Spurts of blood hit the ground, and your knees falter, but you keep yourself upright, leaning on your sword as you stare down the behemoth of darkness-

You meet the sun’s rays with a frown and trying to cover your head with a blanket, only to realize you left it behind on the streets. The solidified form of evil in the shape of a dog helpfully tries to block the sun by jumping onto your face, and you reward it by tossing it across the room.

Your name is Ishikawa Akane, ex-magical girl and one-armed revenge-driven teenager. After staying behind to cover your teammate’s retreat, and hearing their promises to come back for you, the only thing that came was the realization of their betrayal as you spent two weeks subsumed in the empty darkness, making a deal with your former enemy in order to take your revenge, your powers irreparably changed into a new, stronger form. Last time, you emotionally broke Chouko, a member of the team you used to belong to- you’d broken her weapon, and her will- and when she begged for you to stay, to help her become more than a piece of garbage, you decided to use her as yet another tool to take that sweet, sweet revenge. You’ve arranged to meet with her today, after school- not that you’re going to go there.

Rubbing your eyes, you get out of bed, putting on the oversized gray hoodie and baggy pants you’ve been wearing to better hide your identity from those who think you’re dead. You have some time until school even starts, much less ends. And you’re not feeling like wasting it.

>Do some warmup and physical exercises, no use tiring yourself up too much if you plan to train Chouko- or at least test what losing her weapon did to her.
>Take a walk around the city. Even if you don’t get into a fight, you’ve been avoiding tracking down monsters- it’ll be nice to know where the Magical Girls are likely to be fighting in the future.
>Do a stakeout at the school. See what you can find out there.

Well, we've been doing plenty of solo training. We've just not gotten into many actual fights.

I kind of want to stalk Machiko at some point and see what books she reads so we can slip notes in them to fuck with her before we murder her.

You decide that it’s probably best if you do some warmups before getting into anything too physically stressful today. You’ve never pulled a muscle back when you were a magical girl, but you’re not going to start risking it now. Besides, it’s good to brush up on the basics often- all the fancy shadow and ice tricks are good, but in your opinion, they don’t really compare to a good old slice with a giant sword. Of course, if you trained with that in here, that’d get everyone’s attention, so you just begin by doing some one armed pushups after the warmups. It’s rather hard to get used to only using one arm, but once you do, it comes with ease. You don’t have any training equipment, so once you’re done with all you can do while staying in the house, you whistle to call the Shade over to you, and do some running along the riverside , under the morning sun. It’s not really tiring, but it’s definitely refreshing, and it helped clear your head after the nightmare you had tonight. Reliving that battle is something you hope you can avoid, even if it means sleeping less.

As you run, you sort of unconsciously let your mind wander, tapping into the connection to the Shade, faint impressions from the monster present at the edges of your senses. The first time you do, you immediately pull back when you realize- last time this happened was definitely not pleasant, and getting into a monster’s mind can’t be good. However, you find yourself just skirting the edges of that bond again, curious, but careful. It’s smell is much better than yours- and being able to smell negative emotions, even if what you’re getting is just faint impressions from it, is definitely interesting. Eventually, though, you decide it’s better not to try your luck with this.

Sitting next to the river, you take out a bottle of water from your hoodie’s pocket, taking a long sip from it. The Shade sits down next to you, in its “mundane but incredibly intimidating huge black dog” guise. You hate to admit it, but you’ve gotten used to that thing in just a couple of days. It’s been very useful.

You’ve spent a fair amount of time doing physical exercise, but you feel like you could maybe squeeze in some light training in something else.
>Ice.

>Just rest for a bit, and prepare to meet Ochako again. It’s going to be a long day.

Aw, the demon dog is adorable and I can't shake the feeling we're influencing it just as much as it influences us.
>Shadow.
I don't think this is too important if it's light exercise. We're a very trainy girl, we do it every day. That just makes me afraid of power scaling of our opponents, if they train as hard as we do.

You sit on top of the bed inside the abandoned house, tapping into the shadows, grabbing them with your hand. The inky black, dense liquid form of darkness slowly drips down your arm, staining the bed with squirming splotches that crawl back towards you, an endless loop. You know you would probably have been repulsed by the sight of this, before you became what you are now, but you can't bring yourself to feel anything about it. It's just another tool. There’s a couple of ways you could practice this…
>Focus on its use as weapons. Versatility is key, since you’ll be facing very different opponents.
>Focus on its use as armor- More protection is always welcome, and perhaps a helmet would help you hide your identity better, even when transformed.

Unlimited Blade Works
Writing...
>>
Focusing, you will the shadows to coalesce into the shape of a knife. Giving it a few temptative swings, you get a feel for its weight, tossing it into the air and catching it. You try pouring more shadows into it, sticking it into the one cast by the bed, and pulling it out- dragging more of the same black honey-like substance, reshaping it into a sword. Probably something better to train with than a broom- you take a couple more swings, but it’s too light for your liking, compared to your Greatsword. Still, you practice a few more shapes, until eventually you have an idea.

Stabbing the blade into the ground, you tap into the shadows, remembering your fight with Chouko. How you corrupted her spear, and it just turned to dust- well, if she doesn’t have a weapon now… Changing the shape of the darkness, you create a rudimentary spear, pushing a fragment of your cold into it to better allow you to control it. It’s crude, yes, and looks only vaguely similar to the girl’s weapon, but she should be able to wield it anyways. It’s about the same length and weight. A couple thrusts confirm it- it should work just fine for your training with her.

Done with training for now, you call on the Shade, dismissing the shadow weapon and heading towards…
>The school. Pick up Chouko there, maybe you’ll get to catch a glimpse of the other girls. But it may be risky.
>Chouko’s home. After all, they already think you’re her friend, so it’s not like they’ll raise an eyebrow at you coming to pick her up.

Sorry about being slower, I'm pretty sure I caught a cold yesterday, not feeling the best.
Writing! Seems we're visiting the school for i want to say the first time since we came back.
>>
Heading towards the school, you keep the Shade close to yourself. Judging by how Chouko didn’t notice it until you got her attention, you can guess it’s not something the normal girls can just detect- but you’re not so sure about Ayane’s little pet. But the risk is worth it, to get a closer look at them… And perhaps find out something you can use. A couple people stare at you oddly on the street, being a school-aged girl who was clearly skipping class, but the huge black dog and concealing clothes took care of any chances they’d speak up about it while you were around.

The school building brings back memories. Of when you spent time together with the Magical Girls, part of their group. Of ruffling Saki’s hair and her getting touchy about her height, saying she wasn’t small. Of walking back home with Kaiya, talking about nothing in particular. Book recommendations from Machiko… By the time you notice your anger, the “dog” is already growling, feeling it as well. You’ve dug your nails into your palm to the point of bleeding, and as you let your arm hang limply at your side, the Shade licks it away. You’re too angry to notice.

As classes end, Chouko takes a while to exit, next to Saki, who seems to be trying to talk to the very nervous looking girl. She seems to be getting increasingly frustrated and worried, and at one point she looks around, likely looking for the rest of the group. Kaiya, meanwhile, seems to be talking to Machiko at the entrance. Inside your hoodie’s pocket, you shape the shadows into a knife, eyeing them. No. Too dangerous, here. Stick to the plan.

>Approach Chouko and Saki. Just claim to be a friend of Chouko who came to pick her up. Measure the other girl, get a better look into her current emotional state.
>Wait for Saki to leave, following both of them from a distance.

Gripping the dagger inside your pocket, you decide to stay at a distance and wait for the other Magical Girl to leave, watching from a distance. You let the cold chill inside you flow towards your ears, sharpening your hearing and allowing you to listen in
“Why don’t you want to talk to me? We’re friends, aren’t we?”
I… I’m fine, okay? I’m doing better.
“Chouko…” The brown haired girl reaches to put her hand on Chouko’s shoulder, and she freezes.
…Please. Just… let me be, okay? I need to think about things.
Saki lowers her head, sighing, but gives a thumbs up.
“Look, if you want to talk…”
…I don’t want to” The blue haired one shakes her head.
You can almost smell the frustration wafting off Saki, even without tapping into the Shade’s senses. It’s delicious, to see her like this. How much longer could she pretend to care, before Ayane forced her to leave? Not long, was your guess.

When Saki leaves, you approach Chouko, your do- your monster growling to catch her attention. She jumps, and you shush her.
O-ooh, it’s you, Ak-” One look at your eyes, and whatever she sees there shuts her up immediately. Good.
“Come with me. We have a long distance to walk.”
She gulps, nodding. “Can I at least change clothes first…? I’m still in my uniform
You smile, knowing exactly where you’re taking her. “Just text your parents saying you’re visiting a friend’s home.”
Okay…

You lead her through the city, the streets getting increasingly shadier as you go along. She seems reluctant to get closer to you or the “dog” at first, but as you start passing by love hotels and gambling dens, she gets closer and closer.
Where are you taking me…?
“A place where we can train without interruptions.”

You’d slept there before. An abandoned casino, you slept there just the night you beat her within an inch of her life. It’d make a nice place to do the same again. When you arrive, you take off your hoodie, the dagger you’d kept in the hoodie vanishing into wisps of smoke, though she doesn’t seem to have noticed.

“So what are you waiting for? Transform?”
I…
“You can’t?”
I haven’t…tried since. You said I didn’t deserve to be a hero, so…
You shake your head. “You aren’t a hero. But neither are Ayane and Kaiya, are they? Now show me.”
She reluctantly follows your orders, glowing in a light shade of blue as her outfit changes. Transformation sequences… you’d never really taken a good look at them from the outside, but comparing them to what yours must look like now is interesting. Yours seems slower.

Her weapon doesn’t appear, even as she holds her hand out for it. Her expression turns from one of anxiety to one of fear as she keeps trying to call onto her spear, but it never comes. Chouko looks on the verge of tears, and she begins apologizing.
I can’t, I’m sorry, I’m useless-
“Shut. Up.” And almost as obediently as your Shade, she does. What a pushover. You reach out, forming a spear of shadow in your hand- her eyes widen, the first time she sees you draw on the darkness itself since corrupting her weapon. Perhaps she thought the source of that power was something different, but as the realization dawns on her, she takes a step back.
You- you’re a…
You throw the spear like a javelin, embedding it into the ground in front of her.
“I am what you made me into, Chouko. Now pick up the weapon. You were willing to give everything up, weren’t you?”
She looks uneasy, but cautiously reaches forwards for the shadowy spear, grabbing it with both hands and wielding it in an awkward stance. You frown.
“You can do better than that.”
She seems to still be too focused on trying to come to terms with what you are, now, and you can smell her guilt and fear in the air. So tempting…
>Throw the Shade at her to force her to fight.
>Correct her posture yourself. Being overly aggressive might ruin this, and you’d be dammned if you throw the effort you’ve put into not killing her to waste.
>>
Hoo Boi. Things are kicking back into gear. I guess its nice to have some comfier, slower things in between for pacing, though.
>Correct her posture.
As much as I dislike her, throwing an angry hungry monster at her will just probably end up with her defaulting to Saki, or being so afraid of us she will eventually defect.

You sigh, reaching into the shadows again and forming a sword. She raises her spear, afraid.
I-I’m sorry I’ll correct myselfIpleas-” She begins running over her own words as you just slowly step towards her and tap her leg with the flat of the black blade.
“Left.” You say, not raising your voice. Chouko looks confused for a moment, but then you slap the sword against her leg a bit harder, and she corrects her posture slightly.
“Good.” You slap the spear out of her hands, and it clatters to the ground. “Grip it harder.”
She kneels down, grabbing her spear and shakily standing up. You slap the side of her leg again, and she corrects her posture.
“Who’s been training you?”
K-Kaiya was… And Machiko with magic
Kaiya. A bow user, teaching her to fight in melee. No wonder she was still so bad at it, but the fact she’d picked up any skill at all with spears herself was new. Normally, Magical Girls only used one weapon, as far as you were aware. Your shadow weapons would’ve made you unique in being able to have more than one.
“Can you still cast magic?”
She raises her hand, and it glows a soft, ocean blue, water dripping from it and splashing against the ground. She wraps the water up into a sphere, which swirls slowly.
Y-yeah. Even without my spear…
“You’re still weak.”
She shrinks, the water sphere losing cohesiveness and falling to the ground. You slap her hand with the black blade.
“Focus. Call it again, and don’t let it falter. You’re weak now, but you want to stop being weak.”
She nods weakly, reforming the water ball.

“Now explain, step by step, what you’re doing as you create this ball of water. Let’s see what your technical knowledge is like.” Best to not let her know that you don’t have much knowledge of magic, other than Shadows, right now. How theirs work could be completely different, and you wouldn’t know.
Well, I reach for my power… You know, that energy that’s inside us when we transform. And I just shape it, but it’s kind of hard to move it sharply like Machiko told me to… I can’t do it fast enough, and it just ends up breaking if I try to move it far from me. I’m not very good at this…
-Best roll: 13- Nice Success!

You take a couple steps forwards, then grab her wrist. The ball of water quivers, but doesn’t break its shape- some small progress, at least. Chouko stares at you, afraid. “Y-your hand is… cold
Was it? You didn’t even notice you were channeling the ice through your body. But she’ll have to get over it.
“Move it slowly. You’re using water, not… lightning” You recall Machiko having used electricity before. “Just keep the shape stable and make it bigger.”
She nods slowly, pouring more power into the ball. Water flows from her hand, adding to the sphere. It’s rather different from how you shape shadows, but you can notice some similarities, taking a close look. Eventually, it gets to about the size of a basketball, and she begins having trouble keeping it together

1/2-

Of course I get interrupted, I'll be back in a bit
>>
When the water begins spilling off, you grip her hand a bit tighter. More falls off, and it starts to lose cohesion as she begins to panic.
“If you can’t focus just because someone’s grabbing your hand, you won’t be able to use it in a fight. Come on- show me that you meant what you said about becoming better.”
She bites her lip and tries to focus despite your increasingly tighter grip. While she is in her transformed state and you aren’t- which would normally place you at a huge disadvantage, if it wasn’t for your new powers- she’s enough of a wimp that you can tell you’re hurting her, though not seriously. Eventually, she manages to at least maintain the shape, with some still falling off the sides.
“Better.” You say, not really sounding happy about it. You grab your sword, then correct her posture again. “But keep in fighting stance.”
You’ll have to try out copying what you could gleam off her explanations and what you saw her do once she can’t see you. No use showing someone who could still be a potential enemy that you’re still not in full control of your powers.

Chouko throws the ball like one would a baseball, but clearly lacks any experience in the spot. The ball loses cohesion halfway through the distance to you, water weakly splashing all over your clothes instead of hitting with blunt force. She immediately begins apologizing, but you cut her off before she can get a single word in, anger clearly visible in your face.
“What kind of pathetic throw was that?
I’m so-
“Sorry isn’t good enough” You step forwards, slapping her hand down with the sword. Her fingers make a cracking sound, and she clutches it, gritting her teeth as a squeal escapes from her lips. You used too much force there, but you’re not going to ask her if she’s alright.
“Try again, with your other hand.”
It seems she’s at least gotten down the part about forming it, though it’s smaller this time, and the water sloughing off is almost as much as she’s pouring in, probably due to the pain in her other hand. No matter, it’d be healed by the time she got home. For a moment, before this, she seemed almost happy as you taught her, but that same fear seems to have returned. As much as you enjoy it, you can’t shake off the feeling that it won’t do wonders for her loyalty.

“Throw it again.”
It doesn’t even fly halfway this time. It seems like you’re losing progress, and you sigh, rubbing your eyes. This was going to take a while.
>>
Wrong, wrong, how could she be doing things so wrong?
“How the hell do you fail at throwing a fucking ball?

There’s silence for a minute or so before you hear the fear creeping up in Chouko’s voice

Hide first, transform later, our transformation is slow.

You shush Chouko, motioning for her to follow you into the back of the abandoned casino. Of course someone would’ve heard you berating her for being worthless.
The door, which you’d already had to force open to enter the first time you came here, is opened, and what looks to be a police officer steps in.
Hello? Is anybody in here?
Someone outside with them talks as well “It’s probably just some of those weirdos who get off on exploring abandoned places. We going to shove them out?
Shit, it’s the police, now of all times… you briefly consider transforming for access to more power, but decide against it. “Chouko” You whisper. “Untransform, quickly.”
She seems to doubt you for a second. Shit, she was going to hold the whole “breaking her hand” thing against you, of course.
“If you don’t, the police will see you in it. I can get us out of here without being seen. But you’re going to need to trust me.”
Chouko hesitates for a moment longer, but her costume fades into blue motes of light as both of you take cover behind a wall. Now you just need to find a way to get out of here…
>Use the Shade as a distraction. It looks just like a dog, and it’s unkempt enough that they’d probably think it was a stray. Perfect way to get them off your back
>Tap into the shadows. You think you have a good idea that doesn’t risk your Shade getting into a fight…
>Make a run for one of the windows, breaking through it with ice. You can probably do it, with what you’ve gleaned off Chouko’s use of Water.

Well, it seems like everyone wants to try getting that shiny new power eh?
You'll actually have to roll for this one. You know the drill.

You guys really like Shadow magic, don't you?
>>
>>2642023
It let's us summon a doggo.
>>
You place your hand on the ground, feeling around for the familiar inky blackness- but instead of dragging it out of the floor, you pour your power into it, feeling the shadows extend outwards and creep into the room the police officers are in.
”What are you doing?
Instead of answering, you allow the dark tendrils to slither around the other room, listening to the police officers.
Hey, we know you’re in there, come out!
Maybe there isn’t anybody here, dude. Why do we care, anyways?
Because it’s our job, and someone could get hurt in here. Come on, don’t tell me you’re scared of this place
This place’s been empty for months. Who knows what’s in here? Could be ghosts
Don’t tell me you believe in that-
The tendrils of darkness knock over one of the few pieces of furniture still in the casino, making a loud noise as the wood hits the ground. You don’t see the officers jump, but you can feel the sudden spike in fear that slowly recedes afterwards.
I told you it was ghosts
M-maybe it was just the wind

To your surprise, Chouko tries to repress a giggle. You motion for her to shut the fuck up before she gets both of you found, and she bites her lip.
Did you hear that? Sounded like laughing
It’s nothing, just… let’s look.
Are you crazy? I’m not going in there

You let the tendril of darkness brush against one of the officers legs, quickly dispelling part of it into nothingness as he turns to look, stepping back
SOMETHING JUST TOUCHED MY LEG
Come on, stop overrea- aa…
They don’t say anything else before leaving, likely to call for reinforcements.
“Let’s just get out of here before they come back.”
The other girl doesn’t answer, but you get the feeling she enjoyed your solution to it. That wasn’t really your intention- you just wanted to make sure those two didn’t come back. Restraining your urge to slap the blue haired girl, you command the Shade to keep watch until the exits are clear, and the three- the two of you make your way outside.
“That’s as much training as you’re going to get today. Now I’ll have to look for somewhere else to train, because of you.”
The smile vanishes from her face, and she just returns to the same old apologetic look. Good. You ponder if you should train her tomorrow as well, or focus that time on furthering your own plans- You still need to work on the other girls…
>I’ll pick you back at the same place tomorrow. Practice with magic in your spare time.
>I won’t be there tomorrow. I have better things to do for now.
>>

I wasn't expecting a comedy scene, but I didn't know I wanted it. Good, Chouko enjoys others suffering already.

>I'll pick you back up at the same place.
But let's keep the training shorter so we have other things to do as well, and don't get OP burnt out on writing so much training.

The thread actually ended up going for longer than usual, but the thread still feels shorter, since not as much happened. I blame having to take breaks, as well as a slower thread- probably because of monday.
Last post of the day incoming. I may have to examine my schedule, not sure i can keep running every day.

>>2642039
Now that you've chosen the general direction you want to take her training, it won't be an entire thread just training her. It'll just be mostly timeskipped over.

I'm not sure how well my dialog worked here. I'd like opinions on that, honestly, since I'm new at writing this kind of stuff- as well as trying to balance out the darker parts with some lighter things, which i'm not sure if its working.
>>
“I’ll come back to pick you up at the same spot tomorrow. Practice your magic whenever you have time- I want to see results, understood?”
She nods, seeming in a slightly better, less horribly anxious mood than before. But with the Shade’s senses, you can still feel a faint trace of uneasiness and fear- and you’re very okay with that. Your goal is not to be loved.

Putting your hoodie back on, you leave without waving or saying goodbye, the beast at your side sniffing the air, catching oh so many scents of sadness and general depression. Nothing seems to really stand out to it, the occasional spike in those emotions being like a blip on a radar. So many places to go…

But, for now, you just put one foot in front of the other, and think about what you’ve already done today.

I’m afraid I’ll have to cut the thread here today- Sorry if it felt shorter than usual, or lower quality! We’ll be back to the action soon enough, but I wanted to have a bit more of an interaction thread with Chouko, as well as shape how she will be developing from now on.
As always, thank you for reading. Comments and criticism are appreciated, and I hope you had fun!
>>
>>2642050
It was good! I wouldn't worry about today being a slower thread, specially if you're sick. Take some time to yourself, you've been running almost daily for what, 4,5 days?
>>
>>2642057
I still want to run tomorrow and do some more exciting things than training, but I'll have to see how I wake up.
>>
>>2642142
Maybe we could go out at night or some time and come across how the gang is faring against monsters without us.
>>
Jesus fucking christ I'm exhausted.
I don't think I can run with a fever. So I'm going to have to delay this for tomorrow, as much as I hate to say that.
>>
>>2644148
lol we said that you should rest i mean we can hold out for a few days...take care of your health QM we just gonna plan for some training edginess and some revenge plots here

Sorry for all the delays. Between getting sick and loved ones being in bad econonical situations, together with studies, I'm struggling to find the time. But I will. Somehow.
