Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted, no more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

When we last left Baldr, he had went to speak with the Colonel.

“Actually Colonel, I was wondering if you needed a hand,”

The Colonel looks up from the maps and gives you a quizzical expression, “And how can you help me Sergeant?”

“Well sir, I was solider in the elven conflict. I’ve sprung and survived enough ambushes to know where and when an enemy will strike.”

“An elven war veteran huh. My lieutenant is one as well and his input was always appreciated, especially in cases like this. Very well Sergeant, take a look this map, and tell me what you think.

You walk over to the map and examine it.

>-1 Successes

You walk over to the map and stare down at it. Whoever made this map had the skill of a child, none of the marks on the map make any sense to your eyes, you stare at the map for a while, until the The Colonel clears his throat, “So what do you see Sergeant,”

“Hm one moment Colonel,” say as you reach into your hip satchel and find the Coin of Fate, with a simple flick of your thumb the coin spins into the air. As it descends you catch it in your palm. Pulling your fingers back reveals the coin’s face; it is the obsidian side of the coin showing the face of the God of Misfortune. As soon as your eyes light upon its surface, a jolt runs through your body, the feeling of lightening in your veins. Your hand shoots away from you of its own accord, knocking over an ink well, spilling its contents all over the assembled maps on the table.

“What are you doing?!” Bellows the Colonel as he rushes to pull maps away from the flowing ink. You can do naught but stand there and stammer as the Colonel pulls the last of the maps from the table. The Colonel’s cold eyes fall on you as he rises to his full height, ink soaked maps in his arms. “Sergeant I think that your skills at spotting ambushes would best serve me elsewhere. For the remainder of the trip you are to remain on point with my men. It is time you pulled your weight on this trip. Now Sergeant, you are dismissed”

>This will be the last vote for the day.

You look around the several fires scattered throughout the camp. Around one of the fires you see the Colonel’s cavalry wing, small, lightly armored gentlemen who were fussing over a cook pot. At another fire you see one of the heavy infantry squads, tall, burly, and intimidating they were whispering in hushed tones all of them hunched over an object you couldn’t see. Finally at a nearby fire you could hear an argument breaking out amongst some of the crossbowmen, something about a challenge.

“She weren’t no witch. Witches have crooked noses and green wart covered skin. What you were talking to was a sorceress.”

“She wasn’t a witch or a sorceress you idiots, just some old crone who swindled you good. If you could use magic, would you let yourself look as old and wrinkled as that woman?”

“What are you talking about?”

“None of your business,” says one of the heavies without turning.

“Let me rephrase that, your superior wants to know what five have there.”

At this all five of the heavies spin round to face you. They stare intently at you before one of the heavies asks.

“Who is this guy supposed to be? I don’t remember him being with us before.”

“Quiet you fool,” one of the heavies barks striking the man who spoke in the gut. “This is the guy who took down them two heroes we’re bringing back.”

“Oh… He don’t look like anything special.” One of the other heavies grabs the man by his ear, and with a tug that looked like it should have torn the man’s ear off, drags him a way while another heavy explains “It’s this trinket here sir, Gap here got it off a witch in one of the villages we passed a while back. It’s a kind of puzzle see and the witch told Gap here that if he solved it, the puzzle would transform into something useful.”

“But so far, I haven’t had any luck,” Gap finishes for the other heavy.

“Gap, who exactly was this witch that you bought the puzzle from?”

“Well as I remember, we were in town on leave, and I wanted to spend my pay on something other than booze. After I had acquired some booze, me and the boys wandered around town for a while until we came upon this old lady running a kind of shop out of a cart in the market square. Which I guess now that I think about it was kind of weird, especially seeing as it was late at night and all of the other shops had closed. Anyway, as we stumbled by the old woman beckoned me over and showed me this puzzle. When I asked her how much for it she said it was free, that and something about how I reminded her of her late husband. I took the box from her and went to show it to the boys. When suddenly she cackled quite loudly and when I’d turned around the old lady and her cart were missing.”

“And you trust that this box isn’t something nasty, especially after the witch’s cackling disappearance.”

“Sir, cacklin and disappearin is just what witches do.

>Last post of the night

Your few hours on picket duty pass peacefully; the only sounds are of crickets and other insects. Nothing to be seen but fireflies in the grasses, and the twinkling stars above. When your shift ends you head to your tent to sleep. Head hitting your bedroll, you fade into blissful sleep.

You awake the next day to find most of the camp already stripped and ready to move out. You hurriedly help take down the remaining tents before the train begins to move again.

As you and the rest of the men at the head of the train are walking, a rabbit bursts from the grasses on your right causing everyone to flinch at its sudden appearance. “Fucking rabbits,” mutters one of the crossbowmen, shifting his crossbow away from the grasses.

Before you can even begin to move again two more rabbits dash across your path. Then even for small animals explode from the grasses, rabbits, foxes, hares, and even small birds. The man on horseback twists and rises in his stirrups to look in the direction the animals came from.

“What do you see?” you ask.

“More birds taking flight, and a cloud of dust,”

“Is it approaching us?”

“I can’t tell.”

That is when you begin to feel it. A slight shaking of the ground, what could it be? A few moments later you begin to hear a noise, like the sound of distant thunder.

The rider’s eyes widen in fear and his mouth drops open before he screams “STAMPEDE!” The rider wheels his horse around and gallops back through the train repeating his shout.

>2 successes

>This will be the last post of the night.

You take a breath and shout. “MOVE!” The squads snap awake at your words, and comprehending the situation start to sprint toward you. The cart drivers behind them also pick up on your words and snap the reigns getting the horses from a walk to a canter. Seeing your words success you turn and sprint after the squads. You run and run and run, on your way many riders and lightly armored solders pass you in an equally frenzied sprint to get out of the way of incoming stampede. The thunder of hooves becomes deafening in your ears as the herd approaches.

The pace of your sprint begins to slow you as your armor starts to wear on you. Then a familiar voice calls out from your right “Get on you great armored lout.” Turning round you see Carson on the prison carriage trundling by. Using the remaining strength in your legs you leap on to the side of the carriage and clamber up. Once on top you can see out over the grasses, closing fast on your side was the massive dust cloud and at its edges you could see the massive bison leading the charge. “Carson.” You say worry rising in your voice.

“Hold on.” He shouts over the thundering stampede before lashing the reigns down hard. The horses whinny in response and the carriage picks up even more speed. You can only watch now as the stampede grows closer and closer. You can’t even hear your own thoughts as the herd bears down. Watching the last few strands of grass fall away from in front of the stampede you grip tight the top of the carriage and close your eyes waiting for the impact of animal on steel. An impact that never comes, you open your eyes to see the beasts rumble past behind the wagon as the stampede passes you by. You made it.

Down the road you can see the Colonel rallying the soldiers and calling a halt to rest the exhausted soldiers.

You sift through the crowds of panting horses and soldiers looking for the squads that were on point with you. You find all three of the squads furthest down the train, all of them thoroughly exhausted. Many of the heavies were lying on the ground heaving in great gulps of air, while the crossbowmen were on their knees breathing hard with a few of them vomiting up this morning’s breakfast. The one least affected by all of this was the rider, but he was tending to his lathered horse.

You walk over to the collapsed heavies. Kneeling down to the ones who looked the most exhausted, you give them water from your canteen. After a while the heavys’ breathing calms and they begin to sit up. “Thanks Sergeant,” one of them says as you put the canteen to his lips and he drinks deep.

“Hey, where’s our water,” shouts one of the crossbowmen.

“Yeah we’re parched over here,” says another.

“Eh, fuck it,” said the crossbowman “It’s not worth the breath,” he says as he lays down in the dirt.

Finally the one by one the heavies regain their feet and their breath. “Quite the pair of lungs on you Sergeant, like a true CO. Unlike a certain sergeant we know,” said one of the heavies.

“I was about to clout you mules on head to get you moving. Our guest just beat me to it,” responded another heavy.

You turn to the man who had just spoken. “You must be this squad’s sergeant. I am Sergeant Baldr.” You say extending a hand to the man.

“Thank you Sergeant,” you pause slightly before continuing “If I may ask, how’d you come to be the sergeant of these men?”

“By having more brain than meat in my skull,” Monroe says with a laugh.

“Seriously though I got this position because of my experience, I’ve been in this squad since I entered the service. Oh about ten years ago I’d wager. Been in more wars and fought more battles than most people in this army.”

“I’ve been in the Tinalt Mountain War, the Conquest of the Mornmith Marshes, and The Sardid Punitive War. Those and a few other smaller conflicts.

‘The Tinalt Mountain War, I’d heard that, that was a rough one. How’d you make it out?”

“By digging lad, digging with my bare hands through cave-ins the dwarves liked to drop on us when we were going through the smaller tunnels. Those damn dwarves, they are small but sturdy, and their armor is nigh impregnable. That is unless you just cave it in with a big hammer,” he says as he readjusts the maul on his shoulder. “I’ve walked, crawled, or dug my way through many a mountain tunnel. So much so that even sleeping in a tent brings back my claustrophobia.” Monroe’s eyes stare off into the distance for a short time before he shakes himself. “What about you Sergeant, how long have you been in military.”

“Two years,” you respond, “Spent most of that time near the eleven forests dogging arrows. A real pain in the ass but I learned a lot.”

“Alright everybody up, it’s time to move out,” came a shout from the Colonel.

“Well best get back up to the front,” said Monroe as all of the squads rise to their feet.

Hours later as the sun sank below the horizon, the Colonel called a stop for the day.

Might as well finish reading that herbalism book you decide, reaching into your pack and pulling out the worn book, you had almost finished the damned thing. You flip to the last remaining half of the plants section and begin reading. By the time you finish the last page of the section, and thus the book you have acquired a great amount of knowledge on plants used for common poultices and many of the ones used in the books recipes. It should now be easier to find them out in the wilds now. As you finish the last page, one of the pickets returns and you swap places with him.

Your shift of picket duty goes by with nary an annoying mosquito to livening things up. When you shift ends you retire to your tent and awake the next morning ready to face the day.

You quickly dart to the prisoner’s carriage and hop onto the side board, “Selenas,” you call out into the dimly lit hold. A slight stirring of cloth before Selenas’s face appears at the bars of the carriage.

“Baldr?” she asks, squinting against the sunlight coming around the back of your head.

“Yes, it is me. Here I thought you might want this, it’ll make the trip a little less boring.” You say as you push the herbalism book through the bars and into her hands.

“What is it?” she says rubbing at her eyes as she examines the cover of the book.

“It is a book on herbs and herbalism; it should help pass the time.” The thump of feet and hooves, and the groan and creaks of wagons signified the resumption of the trip. “I have to go, enjoy the book.” You say as you dismount the carriage and rush to the front.

“Look out, here comes Sergeant clumsy,” snickered one of the crossbowmen as you return to you position at the head.

“We might have to set up a rear guard so that we don’t get surprised when he trips and falls on one of us,” chuckled another.

Great it looks like news of you blunder in the Colonel’s tent had made its way around camp.

You leave the crossbowmen to their jabs as you continue to scan the surrounding trail.

“It might be safer if we just strapped him down to one of the carts,” One says.

“And risk one of the wagons being destroyed, forget it,” said another as he bursts out laughing.

It is then that you spot the flash of eyes in the grasses nearby. Before anyone else can react you burst forward and intercept the wolf leaping out of the grasses. Your shoulder slams into its side sending the wolf tumbling away, down the road and into the grasses. More growls emanate from the grass surrounding you. It is then that you raise the inaudible goblin wolf whistle to your lips and blow hard. Sharp yelps from the grass as you blow, then the grass around you explodes as wolves race away you and far into the grasses.

Putting the whistle back around your neck, you return to your spot in the train as movement resumes. The rest of the day is spent in an awed silence as you stride in the center of the head.

When the train stops for the day, Sergeant Monroe walks up from behind and slaps you on the shoulder, “That display sure shut them up,” he chuckles as he walks past you with his squad to set up camp.

You pick through the camp searching for the two crossbow squads assigned on point with you. Both of them are seated around a large cook fire preparing a stew. “You know for a bunch of crossbowmen, you guys can’t see for shit.” You say as you approach the squads.

Recognizing you, one of the crossbowmen shouts “Blow it out arse Sergeant; I would have shot the damn thing if you hadn’t gotten in the way.”

“Enough, Splinters suck up your damn pride and admit that if it weren’t for sergeant Baldr here, you’d be wolf shit by now,” Barked a man with scarred and torn flesh running along the left side of his face. Rising to his feet the man walks over to you “Nice to meet you Baldr, I’m Sergeant Palter, but you can call me Grimace everyone else does.”

“Grimace, how’d you get that name?” you ask.

“It’s because every time he aims that crossbow he squints, and when he does them scars make his face turn into a grimace,” answers Splinters.

‘There you have it Baldr,” Grimace tells you “And the next time you answer a question not directed at you Splinters, you’ll end up with a permanent grimace on account of my boot being lodged up your ass.

“Careful there, Grimace. He already talks enough shite, better not clog up the only other exit he has for it.”

Splinters sneers at you, while the rest of the squad chuckles and slaps Splinters’ back.

“So, Grimace who are these guys,” you say gesturing to the squads.

“Well you’ve already met Splinters, but that scrawny rat next to him is Pluck. Next to Pluck there’s Flop that mud smeared bastard. Then there’s Snap he’s the one fiddling with his crossbow, and lastly there’s Dent.” Grimace says as he gestures to Dent a man who looked like a blacksmiths hammer had pounded him all over. “He’s called that for obvious reasons.”

The crossbowmen all give you a nod as their names are called. “These blind bastards are my squad,” continues Grimace “They haven’t seen much serious combat yet, but I don’t expect that to last much longer with this rebellion going on. Nope, soon we’ll probably be sent to the front to help deal with that mess.”

“Sergeant, you’re up” Said one of the returning pickets as he made his way to a tent.

“Ah, I must take my leave, see you and your squad tomorrow Grimace.” You say as you make your way to the line of pickets outside camp.

>God himself descends from the heavens and gives you a blow job. You lucky fucks.

While you are walking your patrol route, your foot slams into a metal object. After you finish swearing and checking to make sure you didn’t break your foot, you examine the object you kicked. It appeared to be a helm encrusted in dirt with grass growing through its visor slot. Picking it up the dirt falls away and the grass untangles from it. The helmet was a steel color, extremely round, and smooth all the way around. The visor had not eye slits and closed smoothly seeming to lock into the helmet when it was set down. Taking off your helm you place this one on your head.

As soon as the helmet settles onto your head the dark interior fades away to reveal the outside world, as if you weren’t wearing the helmet. Something was different though the world seemed sharper, clearer, and somewhat brighter. You turn and try to stare back at one of the campfires and your vision zooms onto the fire, disorienting you. Releasing your focus on the fire you are pulled back to your normal. What was this helmet? It sharpened your vision but you feel like it did something more.

>You have acquired the Helmet of Clear Vision.
> +2 to vision perception checks.

Returning from your patrol one of the other pickets asks “Where did you get the helmet?”

“Found it lying on the ground,” you simply say.

“Huh, neat.”

The rest of your time at the pickets was uneventful and returning to your tent you fall into a deep sleep. You wake the next day ready to move out.

> This will be the last post of the thread tomorrow will be a new thread in which you will reach the capital after this long journey.

You head immediately to the front of the train and join with the rest of squads on point. The start of the day is uneventful, but around noon the convoy stops at a river crossing. Riding up to you from behind the Colonel addresses the squads on point. “You men will be the first across,” he tosses you a sack of coins, “Pay the ferry master when you arrive and don’t dawdle, I want the whole train across before the day is out.” Taking the sack you board the large wooden raft with the rest of the squads and set off across the river.

It takes about half an hour of tugging on the rope before the raft pulls up alongside the opposite bank. Disembarking with the squads you head over to the ferry master’s shack. You knock on the rickety wooden door and a few moments later a bent backed man pokes his head of wiry hair out the door. He gives you a glance before craning his head further out the door to take a look at the troops assembled on the opposite shore. “Toll,” he says flatly and you hand him the sack of coins the Colonel gave you. He nods saying “Go ahead,” before retreating back inside his shack.

Returning to the dock you see the raft being hurriedly being pulled back to the other side. Once there thanks to the helmet you can see the prisoner wagon being loaded up onto the raft. Pulling hard on the rope, the carriage begins its trip across the river. When the carriage is a dozen or so rope pulls away from the dock, you notice movement at the corner of your eye. Snapping to it you notice the ferry master hobbling away from his shack and toward the stand of trees nearby.
