You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Currently, you have been called to the briefing room by Dorothea in the aftermath of the battle to push the Zentradi out of Torman Fields, a vital deposit of raw materials and minerals that would be important for the war effort. However, despite the victory, it seemed that NUNS High Command had their own agenda and machinations, which clearly made Dorothea uncomfortable, based on her concerned tone when she summoned you.

But, well, you were currently with Amy and Cole right now. Cole, despite appearing rather harmless now, was still a potential security risk, and you weren't sure if Amy was supposed to privy to the briefing as well. Dorothea was not exactly clear on that.

"Sorry Amy, there's a briefing I have to go to." You say to her.

"What?" Amy pouts. "Now? But we just got here!"

"Sorry, Admiral's orders." You shrug.

"Of course it's the Admiral." Amy rolls her eyes. "Fiiiiiiine."

"Maybe just head over to the mess and grab some ice cream for Cole. That should keep her happy for the time being." You suggest.

"Not a bad idea." Amy concedes.

"Wait, there's more ice cream?!" Cole's eyes flash.

"Yeah, just follow me!" Amy says smugly as she leads the young Zentradi out.

Pretty crazy how such a crazed, unstable Zentradi could be tamed so easily through the power of an idol. It made Karla's words about their value to NUNS all the more powerful.

With Amy and Cole dealt with, you begin heading over to the briefing room, where you find all the usual suspect. Dorothea, Kellerman, and Karla were present. This was definitely going to be a high level meeting of some kind.

"Captain, just in time." Dorothea nods to you as you enter. "Please take a seat. We're just about to begin."

You just nod silently and take your seat as Dorothea takes a sip of tea and clears her throat.

"We've received new directives from NUNS High Command. They've been keeping a close eye on the situation, as well as our performance against the Zentradi in this sector." Dorothea briefly shoots a suspicious glance at Karla. "And while they are impressed with our successful operations to keep them out of NUNS space, the rumors of their fleet uniting and a possible source of reaction weaponry has concerned them."

"Don't tell me they're telling us to go attack them right now?" Kellerman grunts.

"That is exactly what they're demanding." Dorothea says grimly.

"Surely they must be sending us reinforcements, then." Kellerman frowns.

Dorothea just shakes her head.

"Unfortunately, there's none to spare. Uprisings in other sectors have spread the fleets thin." She sighs.

"So just our one fleet against three Zentradi armadas? Those aren't good odds." Kellerman scowls.

"Can't we just hire some private forces like SMS to bolster our numbers?" You wonder. "They seemed to perform well here, and that was only a small detachment."

"The issue here is that private 'armies' like SMS only fight for money. I'm not authorized to use NUNS funds." Dorothea sighs. "We would have to convince the civilian government of Nabaal to front the money, but it would hurt their ability to defend their own local space."

"And it would probably rile up the Colonial Liberation Front." Karla adds. "They've been quiet so far after we put a dent in their operations, but any more of what they see as "NUNS bullying" will certainly get them moving again."

"We don't have time to deal with civil insurrection." Dorothea sighs.

"At the very least, we still have Amy." Karla smiles. "Our true ace in the hole."

"Sounds to me like we should talk to High Command face to face." You say simply, crossing your arms.

"Oh, that's quite the interesting plan of action. I like it!" Karla smiles.

"I'd be loathe to just leave the fleet..." Dorothea frowns.

"Don't worry, with the bloody nose we gave them, the Zentradi won't be coming back any time soon. They'll be too busy regrouping." Kellerman assures her. "Besides, we can hold the fort here just fine on our own! You got to put some trust in your subordinates, you know?"

"That's... true." Dorothea nods, but is still hesitant. She looks to you, and you get the feeling that she's wondering if you were going to be going with her, but she didn't want to be caught actually being the one to suggest this in the open in front of the others.

"I suppose I can tag along as an escort." You say simply, which seems to give Dorothea much needed relief, though she obviously manages to hide it from the others.

"Thank you for volunteering." Dorothea nods.

Karla seems to smirk, but doesn't say anything.

"And what about Amy?" Kellerman asks. "Maybe she can come along to add a bit of star power to the talks?"

"These are hardened military men we're dealing with." Dorothea frowns. "I don't think the presence of a single idol will sway them."

"Hey, you never know." Kellerman shrugs.

It made sense, but you also remembered the words of warning from Rin, as well, on how there were factions within NUNS that wanted Amy for their own ends.

"We don't need to bring Amy along." You decide. "Besides, Lara can keep an eye on her while she's here."

"Got it." Kellerman nods. "What about you, Karla? I figured you'd want to go back to rub shoulders with the bigwigs."

"Nothing I can't handle remotely." Karla waves him off dismissively. "Besides, talking to High Command isn't within my priorities."

"Uh huh." Kellerman grunts. "So, when will you be going, Admiral?"

"First thing in the morning." Dorothea replies quickly. "It would take at least that long for the Gladius to be refit for long distance travel."

"Gotcha." Kellerman nods as he gets up. "Good luck to you, then."

"Yes, good luck!" Karla winks as she walks past you.

And just like that, it's just you and Dorothea.

"Just tea is fine." You respond.

"Excellent." Dorothea smiles as she opens the door to her quarters, letting you step in. You take a quick look around. Naturally, it looked very much the same as it did the last time you were here. Well furnished and cozy. Dorothea immediately heads off to the little kitchen to the side to start brewing a fresh pot of tea. The aroma quickly begins to waft through the air.

"Again, thank you for electing to accompany me." Dorothea says as she does her work. "While I've always wanted to return to Earth, meeting High Command is always a bit... harrowing for me."

"That bad, huh?" You chuckle as you sit down in one of her very comfortable couches. "Luckily I've never really had to deal with brass like that. In fact, they've always wanted to be as far away from me as possible."

"I couldn't possibly begin to wonder why." Dorothea sarcastically responds.

"So... you think they'll listen to us?" You wonder.

"Most likely not." Dorothea shakes her head as she watches the stove. "But we have to at least try, correct?"

"I suppose I can ask some of my old buddies to see if they can help." You offer.

"What... what can they do?" Dorothea raises an eyebrow in curiosity as she takes the now prepared tea set and starts carrying it over the table. "If I recall correctly, the Special Forces are a relatively small community."

"Yeah, but every little bit helps." You shrug. "Part of the perks of the job is that we're given a lot of leeway to act independently. That means being able to deploy anywhere in NUNS space if it's to carry out an important mission."

"It would be useful to even have one squadron of Special Forces." Dorothea admits as she sits down and offers you a cup of tea.

"They'll earn their keep, that's for sure." You nod as you accept the cup. "Maybe not in a knock down, drawn out slugfest, but anything quick and decisive they can handle."

"I'll keep that in mind." Dorothea nods as you both pause to enjoy the tea. You're starting to think you're picking up a taste for it. "Still..."

"Something bothering you still?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Naturally, we'd have to land in Macross City to meet High Command." Dorothea explains as she frowns slightly. "I'd like to take some time to see Britain again, but with the situation we're in..."

"A short visit won't do any harm." You assure her. "Even if it's only for another day, the fleet's not going to fall apart just because you're not around."

"I suppose." Dorothea laughs lightly. "God, I've been in command of fleets for so long I've almost completely forgotten what it's like not to be in one."

"No vacations?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Never had the time..." Dorothea pauses. "Or the reason to."

'Well, should have figured that from a workaholic like you." You nod.

"W-what's that supposed to mean?" Dorothea narrows.

"I meant it as a compliment, I swear!" You laugh.

"Hmph." Dorothea pouts slightly as she takes off her hat. "Well, I'll be turning in early, then. We'll be leaving first thing tomorrow, so don't oversleep or anything."

"Never." You reply.

You give Dorothea a light shove, causing her to stumble backwards and falling onto the bed, still half dressed in uniform. She just gives you a bewildered yet welcoming look.

And that's when you take her hat and put it on.

"Well, Dorothea," You grin. "For tonight, at least. I'm the Admiral now."

"Really?" Dorothea groans at how corny the line is. "Quit taking the piss and get on with it already..."

...

...

---

"You two are late." Kellerman grunts as you and Dorothea hastily arrive at the boarding hatch for the Gladius.

"There was some... last minute business to take care of." Dorothea explains, still as professional as ever. You're still surprised at just how quickly she can clean herself up no matter how ruffled and unruly her appearance was in the morning. "There were a few complications."

Yeah, complications in that in the confusion of the morning the two of you had accidentally swapped shirts while getting dressed.

"Is that so...?" Kellerman's gaze then falls upon you. Obviously he was suspecting something.

You just give an innocent shrug, and Kellerman continues to give you that suspicious look, but without anything concrete, that's all they are. Just suspicions.

"Well, the Gladius is fired up and ready to go. They're just waiting for you to board." Kellerman continues as he steps aside, allowing the both of you to board through the docking collar. "Have a safe trip, and be careful out there."

"I should be the one telling you that." Dorothea says as she gives Kellerman a professional nod. "Don't let the fleet fall apart while I'm away."

"Of course I won't." Kellerman laughs. "And Captain, you better make sure she comes back safe and sound."

"I will." You nod.

You and the Admiral board the Gladius, and the assault carrier promptly detaches from the Pacifica and pulls away from her and the rest of the fleet.

Now back in the presence of the general crew, you and Dorothea maintain your public, professional relationship, not talking to each other much. Dorothea spends most of her time on the bridge as the Gladius folds away.

You're also in the bridge at this moment, standing a little ways behind Dorothea's command chair as the rainbow light of Fold space illuminates the bridge viewport. Soon enough, the ship drops back out into realspace, and Earth could be seen. It seemed like an eternity since you've last been here.

It's not long until the Gladius is given clearance to enter into Earth orbit, taking her place among the hundreds of NUNS ships forming the planet's defense fleet. This was the NUNS capital and center of power, after all, and humanity's homeworld. With the carrier in position, you and Dorothea board one of the shuttles.

"So where do you want me to touch down at?" The pilot asks.

"Take us to Macross City." You say.

"Got it." The pilot nods. He doesn't need to be told where the NUNS capital is located.

You and Dorothea sit silently in the passenger compartment as the shuttle drops through Earth's atmosphere. Even though the descent was uneventful, you knew in the back of your head that at any single time, your craft was being tracked by dozens of defensive laser and missile batteries both in orbit and on the ground. After the tragedy that was Space War 1 and the numerous other extra-terrestrial assaults upon Earth, NUNS was not taking any chances.

Still, the view was nice, especially when you began drawing nearer and nearer to Macross City. Once the sole city left on Earth, protected by the permanently grounded SDF-1, Macross City was now the center of NUNS power and therefore the jewel of human civilization. What had once been a few ramshackle tents and prefabricated buildings littered around the foot of the mighty warship had now blossomed into one of the largest metropolises ever conceived, putting even many of the pre-Space War cities to shame.

And it's here that you notice Dorothea trembling ever so slightly. Despite her upbringing and appearances, she was still just a scared young woman terrified of the responsibility on her shoulders. You simply place your hand over hers to calm her, which she seems to appreciate.

And the shuttle drew ever closer to the SDF-1, homing in on one of the many landing pads. As it touches down, you could already see a little gaggle of uniformed officers. No doubt your escorts.

"Admiral Nelson?" One of them asks as the both of you disembark from the shuttle. "Please come this way. High Command is waiting."

Dorothea just give a grim nod and carefully adjusts her hat, taking a deep breath.

Just be prepared for the worst, and for anything that can raise our spirits afterwards.

You follow Dorothea as you both are led inside the SDF-1 itself, the warship having long since converted into the main military headquarters for NUNS. However, inside was more akin to an office building rather than a typical military facility. The halls were lined with offices and workspaces, where NUNS personnel slaved away at computers and desks on all sorts of busywork. While these people may not be proper soldiers wielding rifles or piloting Valkyries, you knew that they were the backbone of NUNS' bureaucracy, which was what kept this sprawling galactic nation operating smoothly. Or at least, fairly smoothly.

Again, you and Dorothea are deathly silent as you led to a darkened room. In the center was a simple table where visitors were to sit. Further ahead in the room was a raised podium area where you suspected the officers of High Command would be sitting, looking down upon you all.

"Admiral Nelson. Captain Neumann, please take a seat." A voice says over an unseen intercom.

Both you and Dorothea sit at the table, where you see very, VERY high ranking NUNS officers file in from a different door, taking positions among the raised podium area. For those not physically present, their holographic representations fizzled into existence.

All in total, there were five of them. Four of them were High Admirals, officers who were in charge of directing all military sectors in a chosen quadrant of the galaxy. The fifth, the Minister of Defense, was essentially the commander in chief of all NUNS armed forces, and was essentially the tiebreaker if the High Admirals couldn't come to a decision.

Dorothea visibly stiffens as they get seated and all appear to stare at her, like she was a disobedient puppy.

"Now." The Minister says as he leans forward from his seat. "Please tell us the reason of your visit, Admiral Nelson..."

>And I that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week, and don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday!

Wonder how loud were the noises from the Admiral’s quarters? And did anyone hear?

Thanks for running Merc!

SEE YOU NEXT DECULTURE!

Fortunately, Dorothea's a very private person so she'd never risk anybody overhearing something from her quarters!

So, while in space, nobody can hear you ahegao.

Thanks for the run, boss.

Don't suppose we can commission a replica of a certain sword since we're here?

Supporting this!

See you tomorrow, Merc!

Supporting so long as it's made from the most modern materials and paired with a matching pistol just in case Dorothea actually needs to use it in a life or death situation.
>>
>>2653710
Dorothea likely has her own pistol already. She's a military officer after all.
>>
>>2653704
Should be able to get it in the UK.

Except for spooks and their listening devices.

Also hope precautions were taken. Or maybe not.

At this rate, the whole crew are probably making jokes about us being a bed warmer.

Is Britai still around? If he's still commanding a fleet or that factory satellite orbiting Earth, meeting with him to get his insight on this new Zentradi warlord would be very worthwhile in my opinion. And while I would love it if we could take him back to the front with us, I doubt that would happen. Still, maybe there's a prototype fighter or two lying about that we could borrow.
