You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

You awaken at the dawn of the a new day, rising from your bed. Morgan was notably missing, though that wasn't anything unusual. She was always an early riser, to an even greater extent than you, and Templars were normally trained to live a rather ascetic lifestyle. It seemed that she hardly needed any sort of sleep, considering her nocturnal tendencies as well.

Maybe it was just a result of her demi-human heritage? It was a better alternative than the thought that she was pushing herself physically to perform to everybody's expectations.

Regardless, it was a new day, which meant new issues to deal with.

You head over to try and find Niko to let her know her sister was around and was looking for her. Thankfully, she was easy enough to spot, sitting atop one the Monastery's fortress wall, overlooking the grass fields.

"Yo! Templar! What's up?" Niko says happily. "Things all squared away with Nino?"

You simply shrug. She was stable, but hadn't woken up yet last you checked.

"Ah, well, that's a bit of a bummer." Niko shakes her head. "So, what brings you up here? Figured you'd be watching Nino or going off to find where Morgan disappeared off to this time."

You point to Niko, and then try to ape the sword fighting stance her people seemed to favor, crouching down low and keeping your hand near your waist to draw an imaginary sword.

"Wait..." Niko narrows her eyes. "You mean you saw someone from my kingdom here?"

You nod in confirmation.

"Crap." Niko grimaces. "Who is it?"

You pause to try and figure out how to convey to Niko that it was her sister, and that was when conveniently enough, you saw Misono marching up the road to the Monastery. Alone, thankfully. You just point to her.

"Waitaminute..." Niko pauses and narrows her eyes. "Miso!?"

Niko pales and then looks to you.

"You led her HERE?"

You just nod. She seemed innocent enough.

"Whhhhhhhhy?!" Niko groans. "She's probably coming to nag me to deeeaaaath! I gotta get outta here!"

You grab Niko by the collar and give her a chastising glare. She shouldn't be discounting family so easily, especially if they've come all this way to see her.

"Fine, fiiiiiiine." Niko grumbles. "I'll go see her, but if she kidnaps me and takes me away, it's gonna be on you!"

You just give her a thumbs up. You'll watch her back.

"You better!" Niko sticks her tongue out at you. Sometimes she could be just as immature as Nino.

The two of you head towards the gates as they slowly open to welcome the foreign visitor. Misono looks just as regal as you last saw her, wearing a rather elaborate yet practical adventuring outfit and armor while sporting those long, curved swords her people tended to favor.

"Niko." Misono says simply. At least her stance seemed relaxed.

"Miso." Niko replies cautiously.

"You do not seem happy to see me." Misono frowns.

"Depends. What are you here for?" Niko narrows her eyes.

"Is it so wrong that I just want to see my sister with my own eyes again?" Misono raises an eyebrow. "It's been almost a year already, you know."

"That long...?" Niko hesitates.

Both sisters just stand across from each other, awkwardly averting each other's gaze.

This was going to be... complicated, you suspect.

You carry the two girls over the main hall, where breakfast was being served at the moment. The room had a few acolytes and initiates present, both eating and serving food, but it was easy enough to find a table with some privacy away from the others.

Breakfast today was simple yet hearty. A bowl of porridge accompanied by some scrambled eggs and sausage. Niko quickly started piling sausage and eggs on her plate, basically ignoring the porridge. As always.

Misono meanwhile just eyed the food warily, as if it was completely alien to her. Actually, it probably was, now that you think about it.

"What's wrong, Sis?" Niko asks. "Aren't ya hungry?"

"A bit, yes." Misono concedes as she cautiously adds some sausage and eggs to her plate, though not in the ridiculous quantities like Niko was.

"I see your new accommodations are quite... rustic." Misono says as she finally takes a good look around the hall.

"It's got a roof and walls, so I can't complain." Niko shrugs. "So why did ya come all the way out here? Aren't you busy training to inherit the kingdom?"

"Well, yes." Misono sighs. "But I suppose like you, I get the occasional wanderlust..."

"Ohohohoho!" Niko grins smugly. "So my prim and proper big sis wants to slum it out with some adventurers on the ass end of nowhere?"

"That's... a crude way of stating it." Misono sighs. "Though I shouldn't be surprised since it's coming from you."

"So, you got any party or anything?" Niko asks. "Bring a retinue or anything."

"Not exactly." Misono shakes her head. "I came alone."

Well, that wouldn't do...

"What?" She pauses. "You got an idea?"

You make the sign of the Paladins. There was as certain one who could benefit from having her horizons expanded.

Despite your desire to see the culture shock of Valentia and Misono actually meeting, you had other matters to attend to. You nod to Niko to see if she could handle things on her own.

"Yeah, I can swing her by the Cathedral, no problem!" Niko nods happily.

"You're not concerned with me going alone with her?" Misono blinks.

You look at Misono, and then to Niko, and then just shrug. You trusted both of them to handle things. And if Niko didn't have a problem with it, neither did you.

"He's quite... trusting." Misono observes.

"Yeah, well, it's one of his better qualities, I guess." Niko giggles.

You put down your empty plate and get up. You still have many things to do.

"Wait a minute." Misono pauses as she sees your finished plate. "When did you-"

Many things to do.

There was only one possible place Nino could be in the Monastery without anybody noticing her leaving, and that would be the library, which she's turned into her own personal lair at this point. Perhaps she just felt more comfortable in there rather than the infirmary.

As you open the door, you can hear the sound of books being pulled from their shelves and being dropped to the ground. While the library being a mess was not something new, Nino's unofficial habitation of the area being the prime cause, something about this time concerned you. As you carefully advanced deeper into the library, taking care not to step on any of the discarded books, you see Nino feverishly digging through the shelves with a desperate, almost frenzied rush.

"It has to be here somewhere..." She mumbles to herself as she glances at the cover the book in her hand before casually shoving it away. "Where is it...?"

Not even a near death experience seemed to put a curb on Nino's endless curiosity. It was pretty obvious Nino was searching for something... but what?

You just give Nino a hard, disappointed glare. You had put so much trust, possibly too much trust, in her ability to manage her own behavior and she could not fulfill that level of trust.

Nino squirms under your glare, her self awareness of her own guilt in what had happened all too clear. Her nerve quickly breaks and she rushes forward, wrapping her arms around your abdomen in a hug.

"I'm sorry! I'm reallyreallyreallysorry!" She wails. "I... I didn't want to make you or Naru worry like that!"

While the sentiment was nice, you weren't sure if you could just leave it at that. You remembered that magical limiter Elias has given you, in case Nino's powers grew too unruly. Perhaps this would be a good time to use it.

Then again, it might not help Nino's morale to have to wear such a thing.

Sometimes a parent needs to give his kids some limits. It's a sour ordeal but she proved she gets to happy touchy in research. One or two days with it should make her realize that.

You take out the limiter and hold it in front of Nno's face, and she immediately understands, her body visibly deflating.

"Do I really have to wear that?" She sighs.

You nod at that.

"How... how long?" Nino asks as she reluctantly takes the limiter right, holding it as if it were a piece of refuse.

You pause for second and then hold up three fingers. That was how many days she'll have to wear the limiter. You were trying to teach her a lesson about being too unruly with her magic, after all.

"Fiiiiiiiiie." Nino mumbles as she reluctantly takes the limiter and slips it on her finger. "Ugh, this feels so wrong!"

You just pat Nino's head in appreciation of the sacrifice she was making. You then look at all the discarded books strewn all about the library and Nino just laughs nervously.

"Sorry.... I just wanted to see if there was a book talking about mana crystals." Nino says apologetically. "I kinda remember there was at least one book talking about it, but I can't find it.."

You just nod to Nino. You'll allow her to stay in the library, and hopefully she'll help clean up the place, too.

Though you do wonder if such a book did indeed exist in the Monastery's library. It would be interesting to see how the Templars would come to possess knowledge of something that was allegedly completely unknown to everybody else.

While you do manage to get a fair be of the library cleaned up, several hours pass and neither you nor Nino seem to be having any luck finding what she was looking for.

That's when you and Nino are interrupted by a loud screech. The screech of a very large bird.

An eagle, perhaps.

Sol, you had almost forgotten about the giant eagle Morgan had tamed. Was that where Morgan had disappeared off to this time?

You give Nino a quick warning glare telling her to go get some rest while you stride out of the library to investigate the eagle. What was it doing and why was it making such a ruckus now of all times?

You stride out into the courtyard, where you could see the giant eagle circling above in the sky, but that wasn't all. You squint and can almost swear that Morgan herself was riding the giant eagle.

And then the eagle starts to get lower and lower as it drops altitude, eventually coming to land in the Monastery courtyard. And sure enough, Morgan hops off the back, ears twitching with excitement.

"Hey!" Morgan waves. "I was just giving Engel here a quick ride!"

Engel? You suppose that's Morgan's name for the Eagle now, similar to Romulus. Speaking of Romulus, you could see him barking at Engel now, no doubt jealous of the attention he was receiving from Morgan.

"So, you want to give him a spin?" Morgan asks. "It's really something!"

You're not even sure if this feathered beast could support your weight. You look at Engel skeptically, and he returns the look, tilting his head curiously.

You give a firm head shake. You'd rather keep both your feet on the ground, thank you very much.

"Oh~?" A grin creeps across Morgan's face as she approaches you, tail wagging. "What's wrong? Is our brave Ashwalker afraid of heights? Does he actually have a weakness? Scandalous!"

You eye Morgan curiously. It seemed she was a very sassy mood today.

Fortunately, you knew all of Morgan's weaknesses, too. You simply reach out and begin massaging her wolf ears.

"H-hey!" Morgan yelps as she bats your hands away and backs off a bit. "W-what are you doing that for?"

You raise your hands again, wiggling your fingers for added effect.

"Okay, okay, I get it, I'll stop trying to tease you!" Morgan pouts as she crosses her arms. "You never give me a break, do you?"

You just look at her curiously. Odd words coming from her considering her sheer stamina at night-

"A-anyways." Morgan blurts as she quickly changes the subject. "I also took the chance to stop by the Tower to talk to Elias about those two Mage Knights tailing us yesterday, but he claims he knows nothing about it. Might be due to Mage politics in the Inner Kingdoms."

You just narrow your eyes at the news.

"Well, he said he'd look into it." Morgan shrugs. "But at least we're certain he's not involved, right?"

>Elias has proven his worth. You'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

You cross your arms grimly. It was in a Mage's nature to keep secrets. Not just from outsiders, but from each other, too. It was best to treat Elias as having his own motivations.

"Guess it's still hard for you to trust Mages, huh?" Morgan sighs. "Even after all we've been through?"

You just shrug. You never said Mages didn't have their uses, but in your experiences, they always had ulterior motives. Even Nino has proved that.

"Huh, well, I guess it's hard for Templars to change." Morgan sighs when her ears perk up. "Did you hear that?"

You look at her. Hear what?

And then your ears catch it. The blaring of horns in the distance. Templar war horns.

You and Morgan quickly dash up to the ramparts of the Monastery and sure enough, just over the horizon, you could see a line of Templar banners raised high and mighty, flapping in the wind. Clouds of dust trailed behind, a grim sign of the sheer numbers of marching feet kicking it all up.

"Is that...?" Morgan gasps.

You nod.

The Templars had finally arrived in force.

I think Templar should take a moment with Morgan to talk about what we're going to do after the war.

Maybe, their descendants will gain the ability to transform into wolves or dragons due to how much mana the two of them have been exposed to in their adventures.
