/qst/ - Quests

Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he died. The Fire Nation, both knowing his destined place of birth and fearing his arrival, wiped out all the Air Nomad Temples. When their reincarnations rose to oppose the Fire Nation, they were slain too.

But now there is a new Avatar, one named Kazuki in the Fire Nation, but he has a lot to learn before he even realizes what the Fire Nation is doing is wrong. But one day….I think Kazuki will save the world.

Voting period will last twenty minutes. Rolls will be out 1d100 and be the best out of three

It’s been a week since you had that sparing match with Azula and your whole world had been turned upside down. You were the Avatar, the reincarnation of the Fire Nation’s greatest enemy and impediment to progress, but that you were reborn into here, could help instead of hinder. To put a quick, decisive end to the war, you must master all four elements. While you airbending tutor is being escorted out of a prison to meet you, you’ve been reading up on scrolls and books the royal family had collected from the Air Temples. You had really gotten into the poetry of Guru Laghima. Through it you had learned how to summon small gusts of wind and the most basic katas of the airbending style.

When you see Ty Lee enter the doorway to your study, you smile and get up. “I was wondering when you’d show up. I’m just of early mourning military drills, Azula lecturing me on military jargon, and reading until my eyes bleed at night.”

“Oh, that lame. But why are you reading now? It’s the afternoon.” Ty Lee says, flipping on your desk and taking the scroll from your deck. “Instinct is a lie, told by a fearful body, hoping to be wrong” What does that even mean?”

“Not to always trust your gut.” You say snatching it away from her. “That scroll is as old as the Fire Nation, don’t play with it.”

“Sorry.” Ty Lee says, rubbing her hand.

“It’s alright, just be more careful. This is all that’s left of the Air Nomads. The teachings and history they left behind. Without it, I might not be able to airbender, teacher or no.”

Ty Lee flips back off your table gracefully. You can’t help but clap, prompting her to bow like a showman. “So what do you want to start learning this week?”

“Your acrobatic, quick movements, would really help develop and round out my own martial art skills; maybe it would help me a lot in airbending too, it requites similar movements after all.” You answer.

Ty Lee nods and practically skips through the estate with you: past the hallways, through large open rooms meant to entertain guests or host various rituals, and out past the gardens into a large stone platform with only the mon of the element of fire on it to prevent it from being completely bare. While there was a traditional dojo inside, even one in the guest chambers of the palace, but you were training far to frequently in the various of arts of bending that Ozai or anyone else felt it economical to continuing to use it. Instead you trained where the house hold guard did now.

It wasn’t grueling work. If you hadn’t been used to harsh physical conditioning back home, Azula would beaten your discomfort during her drills she prepared for you. In fact the empathsis on freedom of movement, of avoidance, and even though. Enacting your will like firebending didn’t matter; resisting change didn’t matter. Your will itself was all that matter, trusting fate to flow away and find path for it was...comforting. Well and you were used the cardio.

You learned how to truly leap and roll; bob and weave; learn to reach your opponents and disappear when they tried to reach you. You were astounded by your progress, Ty Lee more so.

“Wow, if I give you a month, you might end up taking my place in the circus.” Ty Lee says grabbing a towel and wiping her face off with it. “That’s so cool. You’re going to really great when I’m through with you.”

Ty Lee is more likable, but Azula's psychology makes for a more interesting romance.

Which was...explored surprisingly well in Four Elements trainer.
>>
>>2673983
Ty Lee is for friendship.
Azula is for tragic, doomed romance.
>>
“I don’t know about that, you’re really great Sensei.” You laugh, wiping yourself off with a towel of your own.

“I’m serious, I’m still like way better than you,” Ty Lee says, beaming. “But I’ve been doing these lessons since I was nine. You’ve been doing them for a week.”

“Say, I got an hour before class, what do you do for fun when you’re in the capital?”

“I love performing tricks on the streets.” Ty Lee excitingly.

You just stare at her. “Ah, well, I wish I could be supportive but that’s kinda of dangerous and nobility shouldn’t be selling...”

Ty Lee punches you on the shoulder. “Ha, ha. I meant juggling or stunts.”

“Oh,” You say laughing, Ty Lee joining you. “Alright we don’t we give the peasants a show.”

It doesn’t take much effort to sneak pasts the guards. There is a particularly tall tree with limbs long enough to lead off the wall and into an alleyway. Ty Lee hops up there in one go, while it takes you two leaps to reach the branch.

As you both land and make your way to a bust intersection, a thought occurs to you. “If you don’t mind me asking Ty Lee, how did you wind up so close to the royal family. Your family is old and connected, but your not exactly miss moneybags or have a lot of active military officers in your family.”

“That’s kinda of why, actually.” Ty Lee says, almost nostalgic. “Ursula, Azula’s and Zuko’s mom, wanted high society kids like us to help socialize Azula, but she also didn’t want people high enough up the ladder where our parents should benefit from kidnapping her. She was really lonely and needed friends. So they got a poor but distinguished family like mine, and new nobility to take that role. Not at all like Zuzu, at least back then.”

>Kidnap? The nobility would actually try and do that?

>Why was Zuko okay but not Azula?

Well, except for the whole creepy incest angle there, what with the player possessing Zuko's body. Never been a fan of the whole Zucest thing.
>>2674029
>Why was Zuko okay but not Azula?
>>
>>2674090

Muscular body and build, much like Chang's. Think rich, privileged jock. But with longer hair, and a more friendlier face. Maybe bigger ears to add to a little goofiness.

But he never looks smug, when he smiles. Maybe naive.
>>
>>2674109
Oh, I'd add tanned skin because he has some Earthbender blood in him and spends a lot of time, in the sun.
>>
>>2674091
Zucest is as popular as it is, because it makes sense with the characters involved.

Azula doesn't trust anyone (because she's too paranoid at the core of her) but she values people of worth that she can read and/or manipulate easily. She's also both in the middle of puberty, and likely to need to need a husband at some point.

She knows Zuko like the back of her hand, and he's ahead of her in succession technically (so if she doesn't kill him before he has any kids, they're liable to be ala the Blackfyres).

Making Zuko love her also gives her even MORE control over him.

Looking at it that way, it's easy to see how she might decide to go with it. Meanwhile on Zuko's end, he craves the love of his family, how things used to be far in the past, how they still should be now. Throw in him ALSO being in the middle of puberty, and not having had much in the way of interaction with other girls while on a ship full of men for three years (also the burn and simmering rage) and it's easy to see him falling to her attempt.

TLDR; It works because Azula does it for control, and Zuko does it for the dream, then both are too far into it (Azula having reached the closest thing to a loving relationship she can get, and Zuko loving the dream [and possibly his sister] too much) to quit.

wow I feel autistic for writing all of this.

>>2674136

>>
>>2674131
It makes sense, sure. But I find it far more TRAGIC than romantic.
What you just described is a hilariously unhealthy devolution of their relationship, and still gross as hell.
It could happen through a logical progression, but that doesn't make it any less nasty.
>>
“Why did Azula need company but not Zuko? Both were probably pretty alienated being the children of royalty and need of extra protection and supervision.” You ask, rubbing your chin.

“Well, despite how much of sourpuss he acts like now, Zuko had plenty of pets that loved him and friends he made with the servants, courtiers, and even his teachers. Azula...everyone respected her for being so bright as a child, but she was always pushy and imposing. She took after her father that way, so while no one ever disrespected her, not one showered her with affection like that did Zuko. She kinda creeped them out; she had a kitten-pig as a kid that she loved, but it wouldn’t never eat anything she gave it and cried when she tried petting it or holding it. It ended up being Zuko’s pet.”

You blink and suddenly feel a wave of pity for the princess. “Wow, poor Azula.”

Don’t feel so bad for her. Her mom sent us to teach her social skills and keep her company, and we all became besites who always hang out together and stuff.” Ty Lee says, smiling. It seems somehow forced to you.

“So, what does Azula do for fun?” You ask closing the gap.

“Ahh, prank people, boss people around, occasionally she likes hearing haiku or watching plays. But that’s rare” Ty Lee continues. “She mostly likes training and improving herself. That training routine she’s putting you through, I guess that’s her idea of a good time.”

You stop before a busy intersection, lined with stalls of food vendors and merchants feeling various articles of clothing or jewelry. There was another group of entertainers doing a puppet show for some children and their parents about a firebender slaying an evil dragon and his airbending master.

>Do some comedy pratfalls and similar stunts with Ty Lee, not only have you trained with her but you goofed off with stuff like this when you were a kid.

>Try juggling with her. How hard can it be.

>Do a colorful martial arts and bending demonstrations, like have someone throw things and you hit them and the like

>Be Ty Lee’s barker. She’s the expert here and you might get in her way.
>>
>>2674178
*shrug* I find it hot.

It has elements of tragedy sure, but...I'd argue that makes it better overall.

Especially since it's liable to blossom into actual love given time (like just about any relationship).

Not sure what's nasty about it.
>>
>>2674189

“So how do want to do this? I have few ideas that...” Ty Lee starts, holding up her hand like she’s going to begin counting down.

You stop her. “Ty Lee, I’ve never seen your routine before and I don’t want to get in your way, because I know you’re going to be great. Let me convince the people.

You wink at her, and then breathe deep, like you were about to fire bend. “COME HERE, COME ONE AND ALL TO SEE THE GREATEST PERFORMER ON EARTH SHOW HER SKILLS, HER DARING, ALL FOR FREE! THAT’S RIGHT SEE THIS FLAMING BEAUTY PERFORM SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING, STUPIDIFYING, ACTS OF ACROBATICS, THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD FOR FREE. ON ANY OTHER NIGHT TO SEE TY LEE ON THE SCENE YOU’D HAVE TO PAY SOMETHING OBSCENE FOR THE GREATEST CIRCUS ACT IN THE GREATEST CIRCUS IN THE WORLD. BUT YOU CAN SEE IT FOR FREE, SOME COME SEE TY LEE, COME HERE, COME ONE AND ALL!

You get most of the crowd’s attention and most them clap for you. But not nearly as loud as they clap for Ty Lee as she flips around multipile times in one jump, leap ontop of the roof of a tall building in one single bound, and walk across a long wooden beam less than an inch thick, on her hands as her feet remained straight in the air. No one though, claps louder than you. You’re whislting laughing with pure joy running through your veins.

When Ty Lee hops down, you think it’s over, but she lifts you up above her shoulders and then toss you into the air, ontop of her feet as she repeats her tight rope routine again. You can’t breathe throughout it, not of fear, but sheet joy over getting to be a big part of the act.

She leaps down and places you on her feet, with a simple push from her feet. She beams and yells, “THAT’S ALL FOLKS FOR TY LEE AND HER LOVELY ASSISTANT, KAZUKI!”

There is a huge around of applause, it sounds more like a thunder storm. Ty Lee looks at you, sweating and beaming proudly.

“That was fun, want to do it again next week?” You ask, laughing.

“Sure, that sounds fun. I always wanted to get Mai to do this with me, but I can never get her to come.”

“Man, we out to get Azula to come try this then.”

Ty Lee shakes her head fiercely, “No way, she hates that I do this at all. She thinks it’s insulting to the nobility, asking her to do it would be like asking her to just give Zuko the throne. It’s not going to happen.”

You shrug and the two of you make your way back to the palace, making sure to sneak in a different way than you went out; climbing up some ivory on a wall where guards only strolled up once every twelve minutes.

When you get into guest quarters and in your room, you see a women in yellow robes and with a long, claw shaped tattoo on her left arm sitting on your bed. If you had to guess she was meditating. Which you wouldn’t mind so much, if a long staff wasn’t embedded into your mattress.

“How the hell did you get in here?” You ask.

The woman didn’t bother to turn. “Ah, what an insightful question? What were the chances that my parents would ever meet, let alone fall in love and conceive me? In the Fire Nation? What cosmic forces would lead to me getting into a room of a castle that had been chosen to be constructed in a volcano or it to exist in the first place? Or was it all happenstance?” She faux pondered.

“Okay, what method did you use to get in here?” You say exasperated

Finally she gets up and looks at you. “The guards who lead me here loosened my cuffs and then let me out; the guards here let me in and gave me directions to this exact room.”

“I take it your my airbending teacher then?”

“No, I don’t identify as that. That’s what I’m to do. My name is Ban, not Airbending Teacher.” she replies. “I see you have been reading up on the scrolls and essays of various monks, nuns, and gurus; correct? Learning from the past and how we got here is the only way forward. Good.”

“’New Growth cannot exist without first the destruction of the old.’ We can learn from others and from what faces us, looking to follow patterns in the past is no different than chaining yourself to it.” You say.

“Hmm, you say the words but do you understand them? Come.” Ban says leading the way to the hallway.

You make haste, only for Ban to step aside and stand next against the wall. You stop and look at for her a moment. She continues to stand compeltely still. You wordless gesture in the direction of the dojo and then towards the arena outside you and Ty Lee spared on; she remains planted to wall, like a coat of paint. Somewhere along the way, you grow lax as you stand in front of her. Getting used to her bizzare behavior and getting silently, she wanted this from you.

Suddenly she bounces in front of you, gracefully, less gesturing with her limbs than swinging them around, like she was brushing the air as a painting. It was like a dance, the swooshing so hypnotically. As pretty as it was, they were also obviously strikes and attack. Nothing like a mere kick, you are lifted off you feet and sent hurtling through the guardrail with a gust of air.

Yeah, I thought the third and fourth seasons of Korra were OKAY but overall the show was just wasted potential. They creators had a great idea for a setting and themes, but worked best as part of writing staff, not the leaders of it. No doubt the Ehaszs' would have done an even better job with the show if they had two more seasons like planned and had more power than Bryn or whatever you call them

As you fall, part of you feels the danger in your bones. A little impulse telling you to counter and oppose this immediately. You agree with it, to a point. Smashing into the floor from this high up would break a few of your bones; you would be sidelined for the entire war. Bad. But who says falling itself is bad for you? Instead of hitting the floor or reversing it, why not use it to go to the dojo faster?

All Ban did was save you some exercise on a day where you already had enough. You motion through the basic katas of the airbending, summoning a gust of wind behind you with a kick, and flick of your wrists to the side.

You shot like an arrow down five floors down, on another hallway that leads further towards the innards of the guest chambers. Right as your head tips over onto the velvet carpets, you flip into the air and do another motion with your feet, a dance like. The smallest gust of wind keeps you from crashing onto the floor, but you still feel the impact on your knees.

You look up and Ban nods to you, her staff unfolding and revealing wings. “It seems you at least took Lagima’s words to heart; though I prefer the teachings of Air Monks who were actually real. You’re practical training begins now. Every afternoon we will meditate for two to three hours. You will learn the stances and katas of Airbending. And then you will become the wind. Once that is all complete we sail to the Southern Air Temple and you will being your war on the Southern Water Tribes I suppose, I will have nothing left to teach you.”

“What do you mean my war? It’s our war!” You say.

“I gave up the Fire Nation and all nations long ago boy,” Ban repiles, sadly. “But it is you I pity, for you all you harm your kin.”

You scoff and wave your hand dismissively up to her, as she flies down towards you on that ridiculous thing. “Is there a contingent of traitor Imperial Fire Legions there? Otherwise I don’t see how I have any relatives up there.”

She lands next you, her hand soft as it holds your shoulder. “The Avatar isn’t of one nation. He is of all them. Each country he calls home, whether it be the Fire Nation, the Water Tribes, or the Earth Kingdoms. Even the tombs of the Air Nomads are your grave. Just as you are of every element, so you are of very aspect and place in the land. You are the world, and it’s peoples are your parent and child. You will see, and you will learn; even as I teach you, you will know it is only so you can be prepared to for what you already know. This facade of Fire Lord Ozai’s can’t blind you forever and when you finally see, you will weep.”

“So, you’re a tratior then?” You growl

The sadness in her eyes only grows stronger. “No, Ozai knows I will always be loyal to you Avatar. Come you must learn for your little dictator.”

etween Azula and Ban, the next two weeks finally get to you. It isn’t just that what little free time had disappeared, that you were used to back on in the Colonies and some schooling sessions you had plowed through. Some of those periods lasted months, and where just as grueling mentally and physically. It was the lack of sleep.

You got around three to four hours a sleep a day. Lunch was no longer as respite as Ban or Azula would have eat through large diatribes about sailing on Fire Nation Ironclads or various mind bending koans that made your head hurt twisting through the paradigm of some of them. You almost feared how much they were going to blend mental training during your workouts.

Finally putting down another philosophy book and a bowl of steamed rice mixed with spicy, green and red vegetables; you get up and head towards the dojo.

Ban is meditating when you get in, while reading some swashbuckling epic that was popular in the Earth Kingdom about a heroic Dai Li agent fighting off some evil Fire Bending general. Outright illegal, yet she practically flaunted the book.

She glances up from her book, soon as you stand over. “So, what is the sound of one hand clapping?”

You stand straight, in perfectly rigid posture perfect for a mannequin, and extend your hand to her. You wave it a bit around pathetically for a bit. Ban laughs heartily and gets up.

“Alright, already to continue?”

Going by old air nomad philosophy, offense is probably the least important aspect of airbending. Movement is key.

You focus on pacifist core of Airbending: dodging, weaving, and just the correct movements central to both summoning and utilize air and wind. You practically mastered the stances and katas the first day, but as Ban says and the various monks wrote, you had to do more than master them; you had to make them as natural to you as breathing was. Ban yells at you and try to distract to see if you’d revert to a firebending or more traditional martial arts pose; you has you shift positions and move constantly to see if would falter at all; she even randomly throws random strikes and attacks at you, not caring if they hit or not but if move incorrectly.

You then move to actually focus on airbending itself. You find calling on the air increasingly easy. As you find you understand airbending philosophy and spirituality more. Before you would say you commanded the wind, but now you knew that was impossible. The wind was free and detached from the world. What you were doing was having the air around you and in you reflect or exhibit that wish with in yourself. Not hard wanting to find yourself someplace new and not wanting to be be hit for example. When you fought or moved or brought forth the wind, you slowly realized it was the fault of what lay around you, and was no burden on you personally. That success was out there to find and not on you, helped. Realizing about the pitfalls and leaps you had to overcome or meet, helped you.

You became the wind.

When Ban finally set up the air gates, you smiled. Each panel was articulately crafted, despite being paper panels like that of the dojo walls. Each one was a bright golden yellow, and was ordained either with the sun or visual deception of a mediating guru or nun, with a serene smile on their face. All were linked together with a wooden contraption and became a maze. Ban got into stance and let lose a powerful, but gentle breeze. All of the panels began spinning around, quick enough that a misstep would knock a giant on their butt.

Ban tries to begin an explanation of how to bypass it, but you don’t need it. You get through it easier than if they had remained stationary, as you realize instantly that all it is a bunch of doors opening for yo and not to question it further. Sure, a bit of airbending is involved to push you fast enough to take advantage of that. You never use it on the doors, sure summoning gusts on the doors was a tool, but only to push you forward and out of the way, not to stop or reverse it.

You gasp as you step out of the air gates, unfazed and unhampered. Ban gives off a polite bit of applause.

Also Hello, >>2674132 here.
Finally found time. Colour could be better, but I think it's passable. Tried to stay true to the animated series.

And off I go, I'll read the rest in the archive. G'night guys.
>>
“Hey, I got some time, would it be alright if we talked about airbending philosophy?” You ask, panting and hands on your knees.

She frowns a bit. “In general or the teachings of the particular philosopher?”

“Well, I can read what the Air Nomads thought, I’m curious why a woman from the Fire Nation got so into air nomad poetry they found themselves able to airbend?”

“I find it more curious that a boy from the colonies was so attuned he not only learned how to bend both the dual elements of his homeland, but could follow the ways of the Water Tribes and a long extinct nation.”

You fold your arms. “Its because I’m the Avatar; that doesn’t explain you.”

Ban looks at you, an eyebrow raised. “But it does? What is the Avatar but the guardian, mediator, representative, and spiritual guide of the Four Nations and Spirit World?”

“You don’t have to be of somewhere to understand other people or want to protect them….oh” You say, suddenly getting her point, at least a bit.

“When I studied Air Nomad poetry at the higher academies, it spoke to me and who I really was. When I was allowed access to it’s spiritual texts; I started following what it taught and snuck out even more information. Through it, I learned more about the world, how...trivial it and it’s concerns were was and how to be who I really wanted be. More importantly, I learned how trivial and meaningless my own concerns, burdens, and attachments were in life; how they weighed me down on and prevented that. I learned how our emotional baggage held me down; how our greed and ambition, get in the way of what we want. We blinded ourselves to the ground, when we were meant to look at the sky. I what it meant to be free and I found myself a little freeier of the weight of the world.”

She hops in the air, a gust of wind lifting her up higher, to accentuate that. You laugh and clap.

“Well, you’d better be going on now. You have more to do than listen me pratt on.” Ban says, shooing you.

You start to go and then turn back to her. “Hey, teacher, did I...blow you away?”

A gust of air knocks you out of the room, closing the paper door in the process. But you swear you could hear giggling on the other side of it.

You hurry over to the main quarters of the palace, and into Azula’s own wing of it. As much of a breech of decorum it was, you bend to help your way there. Using the stances and movements to leap up dozens of floors in a single bound or race forward to increase your speed fourfold at points. All the fiery reds and themes blended together like the paper walls and portraits of Fire Lords anyway. When you get to her study room though, she’s gone. Your lesson was going to start in one minute though; Azula prided herself on her punctuality.

You felt a long fingernail tap you on the shoulder. “No, training today. You’re escorting me to the opening of another firebending school. Take a bath and get changed into something decent.”

“Why me? Shouldn’t I be training.” You say, pointing to yourself

“We’re sending you to the South Pole in a week anyway. I think you have the basics down, and that’s all you’ll need for that so called mission. I need a proper entourage as befitting my station.”

You smile, rubbing your chin, “So is this date Princess Azula?”

“Ty Lee and Mai are coming, I so I doubt it. In fact they might think that since your going to be going with an all girl group, that you’re, you know...” Azula starts.

“Awesome?” You say proudly, both thumbs pointing towards your chest.

Azula just sighs in mild disgust. “Just...get dressed.”

You do that, putting on fine military uniform that Ozai had presented you. It bore no rank, but was of the same make and design of royal outfits Azula, Iroh, and Ozai wore. You obviously were no general, but it was clear no one less would dare treat you as a common solider.
There are two ostrich-horse drawn carriages and they could only fit two people. You look to your ahead and only see Mai and Azula. Ty Lee was no where to be seen.

You reach them with a warm greeting, neither of them return it. “Hey, where’s Ty Lee?”

“Ty Lee? Oh you mean the circus dog. She’s out on tour and won’t be back for two months. In time for the invasion of the Earth Kingdom, not in time to save me the embarrassment of only having two lackeys.” Azula snorts.

As for the accommodations…

>>2680831
Well first Azula tried to make us embarrassed by seeing if we're smart enough to realise that she's implying we might be thought of as an emasculated eunuch - and didn't want to waste time answering any tiresome questions about why Ty Lee isn't coming and whether she had anything to do with that. Which of course she didn't.

And then when we bring up Ty Lee's absence we demonstrate that we care - and Azula tries to make us think less of her by bringing up her "Low" hobbies, because obviously everyone is obsessed as she is with status. Why would the Avatar hang out with an Acrobat and perform for the commoners? Obviously she's a distraction so she needed to be elsewhere.

“Don’t apologize.” Azula commands, staring down at Mai. “You should have been faster, just like you should have been faster when telling Ty Lee she wasn’t allowed to cancel tonight and to stay with us until at least tomorrow.”

“Whatever,” Mai says, disappearing into her carriage.

You make sure to hold open the door for Azula, who gets a self satisfied look on her face as she enters. You take the seat at her and awkwardly smile at her, realizing just how close the two of you were and how good looking she was.

It takes about five minutes of the ride and bunch of shifting your gave to just find anything interesting to look at through small windows and into the streets, but of course there was nothing. Azula sits there calmly and smugly as she watches you, but with also slightly disappointed look on her face; while you of course continue to fidget.

“So, you’re a really good Firebender, you really kicked my butt.” You say nervously.

“Why are you so anxious, disappointed Ty Lee didn’t show up?” Azula asks, ignoring your question. “I don’t mind putting a good word in for you. I helped fix up Mai and Zuzu after.”

“No, I really did just want to learn her martial art techniques; it’s really useful, why do you look down on it?” You ask. “Why are you so intent on trying to read me?”

Azula looks at you a bit, perplexed. “Well you’re the Avatar, I thought you’d focus on developing your own unique and highly versatile skill set that no one else has access too. More importantly I’m wondering why you jumped at sharing a carriage with me, go through all with proper etiquette, and then look away every chance you get. I thought you were trying to court me at first, with you being the Avatar and the son of two prominent colonial nobles, I thought you were pressing an advantage to further your family with a marriage offer again. Your family had prepared you, so you’d give it a second whack. But you can’t even look at me.”

“Well, I guess you’re wrong,” you say leaning back into your cushion. “I’m just not used to seat carriages.”

“How… charmingly rustic and humble.” Azula says, faux politely, “Still don’t buy it.”

For the "you like it too!" voters...I'm not sure Azula actually does.

She's constantly training because she feels the need to be the best, not necessarily because she enjoys the process.

“Why do you think I’m going to have some ulterior motive or angle? I don’t, what you see is what you get.” You say, a little exacerbated. “I think you’re cute, I don’t to make it weird by staring at you okay?”

You instantly cringe as you blurt out that last part, and for the first time you see Azula’s face go a little slack with actual shock. A smile forms on her face and she gets closer to you, poking a fingernail into your cheek. She loops it around your cheek, and you simply can’t face her; your face turning red as an apple.

She leans back and laughs heartily. “I can’t wait to tell Ty Lee this. She was so worried that you were another admirer of her’s and was practicing a whole speech about she wasn’t ready for a boyfriend yet and wanted to be friends. Wait, I’m cuter than Ty Lee correct?”

“Yes?” You say, questioning the truthfulness of it, you just weren’t expecting this reaction.

“You’re the first boy who told me something like that without just trying to curry favor or advance themselves. And even then they usually run away afterwards after I try to start a conversation. I’m so waving that her face!”

“Okay?” You say, nervously.

“See that look on your face? They usually get that exact one. What did I do?” Azula asks, sighing.

“Nothing, I’m just surprised at the reaction.” You laugh, offering her a warm smile. “I’m glad I got to know this about you. It makes you a little cuter.”

Azula stares at you, almost blankly. “You’re right, I shouldn’t read you at all. I have no idea what’s going on in that head of yours.”

“Hey, what about me? Am I cute?” You ask, mock offended.

“Obviously, you have a strong, practical musculature that aids and allows your bending and martial arts to flow perfectly, deliver powerful and fast strikes, not just cosmetic; not to mention the strong cheekbones and those eyes. Your ears are goofy, but that’s not a deal breaker….” Azula starts, before pouting. “How am I going along with this?”

You laugh, but stop when you notice Azula isn’t joining in. What little is left of the trip, is in complete silence. You think she coughs once, and her eyes never set on you again.

You are lead out of the carriage but guards and the next three hours go by painfully slow. All three of you get bowed at, are offered groveling praise and thanks for showing up, and then you spend the next two hours kneeling on a hard pillow to Azula’s left after doing an intricate ceremony ritual with the staff and students that just involved a lot of slight bowing that you have to pull off correctly to show your superiority to them, but that you are honestly welcome to their offers of praise. Azula says nothing actually specific about the school, or firebending, or combat, or what they learn will be used for. All she talks about is the glory of the Fire Nation and serving it.

When you leave, you make sure to shoo away the carriage drivers before Azula or Mai can get there. As they race off, the two of them look at you angrily. You tell them about the theater not so far from here and the teahouse you and Iroh went to. You have to drag them along, but despite their sour exteriors you can tell their excited and having fun by the time the intermission on the play starts. Some comedy about a Fire Nation officer falling in love with Earth Kingdom singer, despite having a great childhood friend and sweetheart waiting for him at home; it was pretty funny stuff and you know you heard Azula laugh during it.

As Azula excuses herself to go the washroom, Mai steps right up next to you. “I understand why you’d want to get on good terms with her and be friendly, but why the hell did you flirt with her. Do you seriously want to Prince Consort or something that bad?”

“What? No!” You say, just staring at her.

“So, you were serious then?” Mai asks.

“She’ll hurt you. She’s poison to everyone, including herself. Ty Lee and I are her friends because she made us being her friends, by threats and intimidation.” Mai says, in a monotone suggesting she’s just stating facts. “Don’t you know what position you’re in? I mean they have you parents!”
“Yeah, to protect them from radicals, rebels, and the enemy.” You say, completely confused.

“You poor, dumb fool.” Mai says. “I’ll tell her we had a talk, and you mentioned how hot and cool she is or whatever. She’s attracted to you and has got you on her mind as something other than Fire Nation’s secret weapon, my suggestion to you is act like a boor or at least cool it with her a bit on the flirtations, get to know her more before doing something you’ll regret.”

Oh hey, seems you guys didn't fuck up with those last two posts.

Maybe went a little hard on Mai, but it opened up us looking into our parents.

Luckily (?) we're going to be going to the South Pole first, so there's more time spent wooing Azula and making her actually like us before we can truly look into what's happened with our parents and feel horrified at them being prisoners.
>>
Also glad to see anons so willing to dive into a relationship with Azula for the right reasons.

Not because she's hot/cute, but because of the wonderful character conflicts and/or arc we'll get out of it.

Her loving us makes our inevitable betrayal so much more impactful, and gives her an incredibly strong personal reason to chase us (we've broken her heart when she's guarded her heart from the world for years).

Whether we turn her or she truly becomes our enemy, it'll be a hell of a good story.
>>
Remember, we don't have to betray the fire nation and azula.
Just the fire Emperor
>>
>>2681995
Unite the world under the banner of the Avatar, unseat the unworthy Emperor in the name of balance.

We're basically Thanos in this story, aren't we? Only instead of stones, we're collecting truth.
>>
>>2682009
We'd be just as lazy as him sure. We wouldn't be balancing anything, just putting ourselves or someone we'd prefer in charge. The fire nation would still grind the rest of the world beneath it's boot.
>>
>>2682261
Sure, the Fire Nation will conquer the world. It's our job to preserve the balance and make sure that there's as little loss of life as possible and that the peoples of the water tribes and the earth kingdom come to learn how good life can be as a colony.

We even come from the colonies - we're the perfect person to get them to understand the benefits.
>>
>>2682261
the worlds only getting ground into the floor cause the fire lords a douche bag.

>>
>>2682359
We've flirted with her twice. Let's not put all the eggs in that basket quite yet.
>>
>>2682355
Honestly there would be no wars if everyone accepted the same ruler, and it's the war that harms the balance. Sooner the Fire Nation wins, the sooner balance will return and we can turn to peace projects.

Obviously the killing of the Air Nomads was bullshit, but we can't blame the current royals for the sins of their forebears. Once the war is over we should see about asking them to let the air temples be restored and letting people return to live in them so that the Fire Nation isn't always remembered for having destroyed a culture.
>>
>>2682414
Aside from some airbender survivors that want revenge i don't really see any of the other peoples putting up much of a fight except for the earth kingdom and their blasted walls.
>>
>>2682414
The balance is more one group of benders having a huge amount of power over the rest. There's no ending where the fire nation wins and the balance is preserved. The only difference if the fire nation wins is that they're no longer fighting a war but dealing with a rebellion. The water tribes are already almost wiped out (and our first mission is to basically finish the job). The Earth kingdom is basically just ba sing se. There is no peace to be had here. Though the mc may never realize that.

Definitely going to be interesting no matter how it goes down.
>>
>>2682009
It's...actually pretty viable IC.

Since we're a true believer in the propaganda of the empire, and in the Fire people. So upon realizing that the Fire Lord is unfit to act as Ruler? We could totally step in for control.

I imagine that we'll have ZUko acting as Lord Paramount of fire, while we go around as Emperor with our wife (Azula of course), spending 4 years at a time (for four elements) within each of the four nations.
>>
>>2682599
The problem, of course, would be Succession.

Who takes over once The Avatar dies? I doubt every incarnation will be willing to act as Emperor.

Do we just have the leaders of their respective elements rule in tandem? 1 person each representing an element, with the eldest descendant of Kazuki acting as a lockbreaker if the actual Avatar of the time won't step in.
>>
>>2682599
>Azula of course

If we're aiming to be emperor it is. That, or killing her/Zuko.

See, if we DON'T marry her and reach for emperor she'll violently attempt to throw us down. And either succeed or die trying.

Meanwhile, on Zuko's side of things, while he might be fine with not getting to rule the fire empire his descendants will likely be super salty, so unless we kill him we would have to make him the equivalent of Lord Paramount to avoid headaches down the line.

You think on what Mai told you as the play wraps up. You take no joy in the witticisms and one liners from the actors, and barely can process in understanding the basic ending of the Fire Nation officer ditching the Earth Kingdom bitch and hitching it with the mistreated girl next door. No matter how much you wrapped your head around it, it didn’t make any sense. It was downright cruel, implying that Azula was unworthy of sympathy; at the time time, it was brave. Mai really stuck out her neck by telling you that, if Azula overheard her, Mai’s family suffer greatly. They could even lose their land and title.

You shuffle out with Azula and Mai, head hanged down and despondent. Mai shoots you a look, but then goes goes back to just nodding along with whatever she says. You are pretty sure they are talking about the play. Azula finally gets tired of your brooding and goes to approach you when you lag behind.

“Why are you mad? Please tell me you aren’t mad because the ending was racist of whatever. It was just instilling that we have obligations to our families and homeland.”

>No, I’m just thirsty. You want to get some tea?

>No, I’m just thirsty. You want to get some tea? Mai said she had to do something.

“Kinda; it isn’t fair to our former Earth Nation citizens. They’re part of our homeland now too after all.” you say, shrugging,

“Yes, but he only fell in love with her because she was exotic and had already made promises back in the Fire Nation,” Azula says, rolling her eyes. “I shouldn’t expected anything less out of a colonial.”

Azula manages to hail a carriage for the three of you. “Hold on, while we’re out I’d like to do a little shopping.”

“Shopping? You do know Ty Lee isn’t here right?” Mai says grumpier than usual.

Azula wags a finger at her dismissively. “I’m planning on spending five hours there looking for accessories and shoes, but you don’t look with this good without putting the effort into it. I am Princess Azula. I can’t just dump black on myself and call it day. Kazuki, feel free do whatever you want, but don’t follow us. Don’t want anyone thinking there is anything improper going on.”

I don't think we'll have to worry about the cold between a heated ship and Airbending (Anng was basically never cold).

We could buy Azula a gift, but something you make yourself is always worth more. Alternatively something rare, bring her back a bone weapon from the water tribes.

No point in buying books here, they'll be propagandic as fuck.

When you reach the bazaar proper, you all disembark and seprate into two groups. Azula and Mai go off to buy dresses from some up class merchant selling fine ones and flaunting the silks she has on display. You go to a more rugged area, catering openly to sailors, soldiers, and explorers. Weapons of quality and dubious craftsmanship are on display, but you aren’t interested. You head over a stall selling traveling supplies, from mountain climbing gear to a suit with a bronze fishbowl for a head for deep sea diving. You walk up to him and purchase blue and white furs, and underclothes supposedly that would help catch your heat.

You grab a cup of tea from some guy with a chart selling it and soup, and take a seat on a stone bench near a water fountain in Fire Lord Azulon’s appearance. You sip at it for awhile before finally putting it down and getting into position on it for a mediation pose. Every time you thought back to it, Mai’s suggestion that the Fire Lord had basically kidnapped your parents seemed more and more logical, hell likely. General Tan Zu’s book’s Warbending, said outright to do it in these circumstances and the royal family swore by it since Sozien’s time. Azula drilled you on it every day.

As you slid deeper and deeper into your mind you t hought on what Ban told you though. The Avatar represented all Four Nations; all peoples and the world. It’s harmony and balance; it’s opportunity's and chances for enlightenment and peace. But you weren’t sure her assumption that the Fire Nation was actually violating any order by interfering. If the Nations were supposed to mix, then why did the Avatar exist for so long. But Ozai arrested your parents.

“And his grandfather wiped out the Air Nomads,” a blue old man says in front of you.

You almost jump up, before the gaze in his eyes keeps you down in your seat.

“Hello Avatar Kazuki,” the old man says, “I am Avatar Roku.”

“Avatar...Roku?” You ask, wondering if you had lost your mind and developed an imaginary friend or where seeing thing, or what not.

“Yes, I was the previous Fire Nation incarnation of the Avatar.” Roku answers.

“How are you here? You’re dead right!?!” You ask, questioning your own statement.

Roku nods. “Yes, and also I am alive as we speak, reborn and sitting on a bench waiting for my two friends to come back and wondering about what the one called Mai told you about Azula. And I’m here to tell myself that what she says is true and more; the father is worse the than the daughter ever will or can be. You must not let what happened to the Air Nomads happen to the rest of the world. And you must do so, by summer’s end. You must stop the slaughter of the innocent”

“Air Nomads weren’t innocent, they were nothing but a paramilitary organization with a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Some of it’ insightful, but still.” You retort.

Roku just looks sad when you’re done. “Go to the Southern Air Temple when you are sent to the South Pole. Find out the truth, and find me again, by the Winter Solstice.”

The old man vanishes and is replaced by two very familiar girls.

“Maybe I am getting to much like Ty Lee, he fall asleep waiting for us.” Azula says. “Wake up, we’re done. Honestly, your the Avatar, try to act like it and not sleep in on a bench like a beggar.”

“Hey Azula, would it be alright if I visited my parents before I left for the South Pole? It will be awhile before I get to see them again and god forbid if I die,” You say. You had to test what Mai and the ghost of the Avatar just told you.

“I understand, your worried something might happen to them while you’re gone or that something might happen at sea,” Azula says, grabbing your shoulder. “But if my father and I even knew, it could leak out to servants or officers a little to gung ho and read history a little too literally. I promise you though, after the South and North Pole fall, the need for these precautions will disappear. Loose lips sink ships and we proof to shoe the Fire Nation that you are on our side. You are on our side, correct?”

“Of course.” You say, bowing. Of course now you didn’t know if that was because something might happen to your parents or believed Azula or were putting your country first.

You head back on a carriage with Azula, both of you looking away from each other awkwardly. Mai sits next to Azula, burrowing a hole in the cushion next to you with her eyes.

Azula looks at you, face scrunched up. “I saw you’re coat. It looks nice and warm enough to allow you to survive subzero temperatures for prolonged periods of time. Because it’s so warm.”

>Thanks! Can I see your dress, I bet it look lovely.

>Well, yeah I’m going to the South Pole.

“Thanks, it looks a little Water Tribey, but I guess that will let me blend in,” you say, happily. “Did you found anything interesting while you were out? Would love to see it”

Azula sighs, but a smile is on her face. “I told you I bought a dress. I also bought a very laid back, but formal and acceptable in polite society gown for you. We’re going to be throwing you a party before you leave. I thought you’d like better than the rigid old thing my dad provided you or that out date get up your parents provided you.”

“Thanks,” you say, reaching into her bag as she presents it. It did look nice, but there was only so many ways to use fire to articulate your wardrobe.

“Are you asking me out on a date princess?” You ask, wiggling your eyebrows.

Azula looks over back to Mai and then to you. “Yes, you definitely could call us that. Together we’re going to be the it couple of the party and make every other couple weep with jealously; they will know their lives will never being close to being as fulfilling as ours, their lovers forever inadequate.”

You and Mai both look at her. “Don’t tell me I ruined it? Crap.”

“Well, I think we’d look nice together too. I don’t think most of them are really going to remember the party that much though.” You say, chipper as ever. “But, does that mean you’re asking me to be your boyfriend or...”

“No, I don’t really know you all that well yet. I just think it would be fun going with you.” Azula says.

“Cool.” You say, suddenly remembering everything that went down tonight “Cool, cool, cool.”

The carriage reaches the palace, Azula goes in without a thought, but Mai looks back. That gaze seems to be a mixture of cynicism and pity, look she was looking a drunken town idiot and not the Avatar. You’re not sure you can blame her or think she’s an idiot herself. You understood what she told you and you were grateful.

Sorry last update for tonight, tune back in Thrusday.

Just give me a bit
>>
You finally get out and tip the carriage driver, something Azula and Mai forgot to do and then quickly depart from him without a word. As you entered and passed everything in the palace, you couldn’t help but be creeped out by the architecture; the endless sterile, perfected boxed and lined hallways; the demonic reds and blacks; and even the shadows bent and wiggled in the flame, like a predator in the shadows. Everything seemed off.

When you reach your quarters, you skip your room and go back to study. With a flick of your head you light all the lanterns in the room, bring out the sun to banish the shade. You pull up an unopened book of Guru Lagima’s work; a mixture of both his philosophy and poetry.

“Voidness is that which stands right in the middle between of life and death; it strides in both the spiritual and the physical. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite - there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all human beings.

Let go your Earthly Tether. Enter the Void. Empty and become the wind ”

You frowned. It made sense and didn’t. Emptiness and freedom from the worldly concerns would bring the success and joy of them; to relaquish your possession and yourself would grant you all you wanted and find yourself. Mind twisters, wraped in koans.

But there was a truth in them, that’s what drove you mad.

You bring up your fist to extinguish the light, only for a moment to see your arm stick out of your arm. A perfect greenish duplicate anyway, while your normal arm remained lax. You scream and you could hear it, but at the same time no noise came out.

And then you woke up. You yawn; that was weird

Somehow you manage to get to sleep after an out of body experience that leads you to think all that studying wasn’t actually that good for your brain. You wake up and go through the same routine of studying with Azula, undergoing various drills with Azula, reading Air Nomad scrolls with Ban, and then either mediating or trying out airbending with Ban. You can almost forget about it, seeing the ghost of a dead Fire Nation Avatar, and learning that Azula and Ozai weren’t entirely confident with your loyalty to your homeland.

By the time the day of the party, you can’t sit through your meditation session with Ban. You fidget and keep opening your eyes; you swear a pain your leg throbs every single time you get you’re about to slip into the correct mental state.

Ban swats you on the back of the head. “Get up, you’re just scoffing the floor.”

“Sorry,” You say, getting up.

Ban raises her eyebrow. “Why?”

“I’m not interested in brain twisters today,” You sigh, getting into a martial arts stance.

Ban doesn’t. “What’s wrong Kazuki?”

“I saw Avatar Roku...and an Air Nomad Avatar; I’m starting to see ghosts, especially when I mediate.”

Ban looks at you for awhile and smirks. “You’re growing into your Avatar powers. You’ll want to talk to the Fire Sages. If that’s what’s bugging you, I suggest you read more into the works of the various gurus of the Air Nomads, you’re obviously too distracted to meditate. Maybe it would put you more at ease, until Shyu works with you.”

“Trust me, the exact opposite is…,” you start saying before something in Ban’s eye stops you.
“Just double your reading, I’ll give some small books you can read for your journey to the South Pole.
I won’t want you to wobble on your path to airbending Kazuki.” Ban says, her face blank again, but her speaking. ‘Read the scrolls and learn about the Avatar State.’

“What was it like to have achieved airbending? I mean you might be the last alive, at least to reach your level. There probably hasn’t been an airbending master in decades.” You ask.

Ban shakes her head, “Very sad, until I found you.”

“Me? Why?” You ask

“Personal enlightenment is nice, but made harder without the interaction with others. We can learn from books and poetry, but the world and people who can act as teacher. You might call me sifu, but our lessons have been informative for me. Through you I’ve changed. Furthermore it’s sad knowing just what the Air Nomads had to teach and give us, and not share it with the world at large.” Ban says, tonelessly. “All that I’m reminded of is just how good I could have been if someone had taken me under my wing. How much of airbending was lost. And the culture Like sandcastles washed away by the tide. Pretty, but transient.”

“Sounds like something the airbenders were for there, things that disappear and become free from the world.”

“But now, no one will be able to do that themselves Kazuki,” She states, emotion reflecting in her voice. “That’s why you are so important. To keep harmony in the world...to make sure we are never again lose so much. But that’s enough, you have a party you have to go to, correct?”

He meant Azula.

He wants to fight Azula with Airbending.

You leave and go back to the quarters, you don’t even bother go wash up; you hadn’t done any exercise today. Reading books didn’t bring up a sweat and you had bathed last night. Instead you decide between the outfit your father bought you, Ozai had lent you, and then finally the one Azula had bought for you. You had to admit, it was the only one out of the three that actually seemed in vogue with the ladies and men of court. You disrobe and put it only, slowly and deliberately.

Some serving woman who had helped you dress normally, instead presents you with a boutique of flowers. “For Azula sir, I want those night to go well for you. You’ve been so good to us, you’ve been our favorite guest in years. You’ve been so warm and kind, not at all like the others”

As she bows you, you smile nervously. You don’t remember her at all, not just her name but her. You really could tell the servants apart honestly, they never entered your mind. “Thank you, you’ve been very dutiful. You deserve nothing but respect.”

She prostrates herself completely, you do a slight bow and walk over her. You did in fact need to get to Azula. It takes you ten minutes to get to her, despite your retaliative proximity to her. So many servants, cooks, and valets were making their way around the palace; you had to elbow your way though them. You’re really glad you didn’t take a bath, they would have ruined it.

You bow to the two guards blocking the entrance to her door, they in return step to the side. You knock on her door. She steps through the door, and even if you didn’t want to admit it (you do), she looked good. The dress was conservative but accented her figure well all the same, while remaining entirely chaste. Still just red, orange, and black through.

Azula smiles. “You right on time. The perfect date: punctual.”

“And her I thought I was cutting it kinda of early.” You say laughing.

>Offer to walk Azula through the garden, meeting important guests before the party and getting to relax a bit

>Go straight to the party.

>Ask Azula if she wants to sneak into the kitchen and get first dips in desert.

>Ask if Azula she’s just like to stay and talk for awhile

We haven't mastered airbeding yet so Ban probably isn't in danger of being offed yet.
