The day before Startup, Briefing Room

They were the Franxx.

There they were, displayed on the briefing room's monitor before you, the future weapons of your ascendancy and your revolution. They would prepare for you a base to one day oppose Papa on equal terms and eradicate him. Just as they were fetters, they would one day be the ropes with which the Adults would be hanged from.

You took a deep breath to calm yourself, your exuberant joy threatening to burst out there and then, barely suppressed by your understanding that things needed to be concealed.

"...And as the pairs have been finalised, each pair will be assigned their respective Franxx." Hachi continued with his briefing.

Argentea. Chlorophytum, Delphinium, Genista - and of course a Standard Franxx. These were the weapons that would lead the final charge to overthrow Papa. For now, however, they would be used to fight klaxosaurs. To that end, you needed to listen on to the way they were each specialised to fight them. The pieces were in place - on this blind chess game, you needed to now know what they were.

"Codes 015 and 016." The Defence Commander referred to Ichigo and Hiro. "You shall pilot Delphinium." Hachi pointed to the giant white Franxx with the blue abdomen. Armed with dual Envy Shop short spears that could fire like the pila of Roman legionaries, it was a consummate heavy melee Franxx.

Ichigo gripped tightly onto Hiro as if they had gained something together.

"Codes 196 and 056. You will pilot Chlorophytum." Hachi highlighted the distinct purple Franxx with what looked like ammunition pouches - a fire support unit."

Goro and Ikuno glanced at each other - the perfect weapon for protecting Ichigo.

"Codes 390 and 666." Hachi referred to Miku and Zorome. "You will pilot Argentea." Zorome and Miku simply squeaked and squeal with childlike joy.

It was the petite looking unit armed with claws. Light and probably fast it was perfect for charges and it looked even better for hammering-and-anvilling alongside Delphinium as the hammer.

"Codes 556 and 326. You'll pilot Genista." There was a certain rustic charm to that obviously heavy-artillery unit - as if it were a familiar friend. Well, it's couldn't hurt to get used to artillery.

Mitsuru simply grunted, nonplussed. Kokoro remained silent.

"Codes 703 and 214. Unfortunately, due to resource constraints" - bullshit! "you will have to make do with the Standard Franxx."

"It's not like we need more for victory." Naomi comforted you. To be frank, pun intended, your endgame never was contingent on special units nor superior technology, but rather, military science. Indeed, the advantage you now had was significant.

"If you have no further questions, you are dismissed."

Is this the new loli stalker quest?

>>2677337
[] Leave and confer with Naomi in your corner.
>>
I find very interesting how this quest turned the fat guy into a revolutionary trying to overthrow Papa and how a lot of people complain about the actual show for not featuring any kind of revolution. Even after the total collapse of the VIRM's masquerade they still cling to the previous authorities. Nana 2, Hachi, Nana 1, etc.

Is this a Very American Thing™ of the audience being trapped in the eternal revolution mindset or just a more generic teenage angst against authority a la ya fiction?

I am also surprised that this didn't die immediately after the VIRM reveal.
>>

This quest is not the same without Trashfire Anon.
I miss him already.
>>
>>2677414
Mecha has always been a genre with political commentary. Code Geass, Gundam are some of the examples. Furthermore, space opera such as LoGH and Yamato define fictional politics. VIRM is just another form of xeno filth and ask someone to xenos are inherently political and thus revolution is always relevant.

5*22 against 4*4

Futoshi succeeds.

---

You raise your hand to make a bold proposition.

"Yes, Code 214?" Hachi flatly states your designation.

"Papa and the Adults will have us formally become Parasites tomorrow and it is important to commemorate our first Connections in the Franxx together with the Startup. However, we should not wait until then to actually pilot the Franxx. We ought to rehearse beforehand."

"It would be unconventional. I'm not sure protocol would allow that." Hachi simply observed.

"All protocol must serve Papa's will. Papa's will is victory over the Klaxosaurs." Not that you actually cared for Papa's will except as a pretext for your own ends. "Therefore, protocol must give way to Papa's will and rehearsing for the connection tomorrow will serve that."

Evidently, with all the eyes on you, you had indeed made a bold proposition.

A short silence clogged the room. The Defense Commander broke it with his reply.

"You shall immediately change to your stamen and pistil suits and we will commence drills as soon as possible."

Giddy at your somewhat insane gamble, you headed off to the lockers, the stamens splitting off from the pistils to their change rooms.

It actually worked.

---

While you were too giddy, drunk in your success to pay attention to the particulars in the locker room, you could hear Mitsuru complaining and Goro talking about his surprise at the situation.

You soon headed to the hangar, entering your Standard Franxx after Naomi.

---

You seated yourself in your stamen seat while Naomi was dock into the pistil controls.

"Risky, but effective." She commented.

"Yeah." You said emptily. The buzz of success was filling your cheeks.

The only thing left was actually starting the connection.

---

After some advice by Hachi, he signaled that it was time to connect.

You closed your eyes, focusing on Naomi. Thoughts flowed rapidly through your mind and Naomi's as well - one shared goal, the liberation of the Children, the subjugation and APE and the destruction of Papa - dreams and nightmares alike were traded to each other---

You opened your eyes.

P and N factors were quickly approaching 100 and no doubt, they would go beyond.

---

"I will provide your strategic objectives. In the field, you will follow Standard's decisions. Should Standard be disabled, you are to follow Delphinium."

A small argument had grown out of who was to be the NCO between you and Ichigo at one of your tabletop wargaming sessions with Ikuno. It had been resolved with a compromise that you would the main NCO and Ichigo would step in if you were disabled. Hiro seemed supportive of it and so Ichigo had relented.

The drill - or rather 'rehearsal' as you had reworded it, had begun in earnest. Right now, it was to focus on basic movement.

---

Marching with the rest of the Squad, you noticed a blip on the radar.

"Defence Commander," you communicated to Hachi, "we've detected something."

You decide to investigate it by yourself.

'Alright, guys. We're going to look at just what is there...'

You march the Standard Franxx in the general direction of what was detected. You approach it, taking care not to have your radar get the blip in the centre for the possibility of there being something dangerous underneath.

You march.

You see nothing, but what seemed like two column's of bluish stone.

Suddenly, the ground started tremoring.

Dammit.

Naomi panicked slightly, but managed to remain calm with you. Unfortunately for the both of you, the thing rocking the ground was not only a mental phenomenon, but a physical phenomenon.

It rises, heaving tonnes of dead rock and soil off of it, flinging it in every direction. You are caught up in its sudden breach of the ground and are flung across the desert expanse.

Naomi winces slightly from the sympathetic pain. You somehow manage to land the Franxx on its feet as if you were some kind of acrobat.

"Contact! Klaxosaur from underground!" You yell over the comms.

The rest of the squad chattered out in confusion.
"Futoshi!" In particular, you distinctly hear Kokoro call out your name.

Ah - of course, you were supposed to command them, not panic, not even if you were at the front line.

Options, options, options...

At this proximity to the Mohorovic, having Genista attack could possiblity expose you to fragmentation... The Standard Franxx isn't simply strong enough to take on the Klaxosaur. You aren't in a position to turn and flee, given that the klaxosaur looks fasts as hell despite its size. Chlorophytum would be able to provide direct fire support with minimal risk of friendly fire. Delphinium could rush in and back you up and Argentea could soon follow.

[] Risk friendly fire on yourself and Naomi. Have Chlorophytum and Genista unload on the Mohorovic. {OVERWHELMING FIREPOWER: Apply -4 penalty to enemy dice rolls as uncountered attacks. Cannot be used if either Chloro or Genista in melee or blast damage range (within 2 paces).} {Additionally, roll to defend against Chlorophytum and Genista}

[] Have Delphinium and Argentea come to your aid and attack: {Hammer and Anvil (Ds, Al, Al, Ep): Delphinium attacks normally, pinning the enemy. Argentea bonus-attacks twice each with Luck. Argentea attacks agains normally.}

[] Have Chlorophytum pin the Moho-klax down and Argentea rush to your aid {Chlorophytum and Delphinium - Marching Fire (Cs, Dl, Ds, E-1): Chlorophytum attacks the enemy, applying -1 penalty to their rolls. Delphinium bonus-attacks with Luck, then attacks normally.}

>>

>Risk friendly fire on yourself and Naomi. Have Chlorophytum and Genista unload on the Mohorovic.

Well from what i have seen from other quests is that the QM rolls for the npc and enemies and the highest roll from the first three player rolls is used for them
>>
>>2679384
That’s only one way to do it.

>>2679381
Usually it’s QMs quest so QM will implement whatever dice roll system they feel like.
>>
>>2679384
Yeah, that might make it more tedious to incorporate with the Tactics (https://pastebin.com/5ttSu1zg), because that would mean we have to roll thrice for every roll in a combo attack, meaning anywhere from 9 to 12 dice. I'll try it for the next roll, but if it's too clumsy we'll have to revert to me rolling them.
>>
>>2679402
Well the way we can resolve that is since we only really use a d6 we can roll all of the people in the combo in a single post of a player and then designate which character is which roll and here is an example
Rolled 3,2,6 the first roll is Futoshi (3) second is Zorome (2) and third is Goro (6)

or we could have u roll for our teammates as well and have the players only roll for Futoshi

or just use another system

---

The Klaxosaur before you was truly a large enemy. Despite its size, it did not 'lumber'. Rather, it 'swung like a sledgehammer'. It loomed above puny mortals such as you, waiting for a chance to simply crunch, squish you. The Franxx only managed to bring humans to their scale and even then, it was like a man armed with a spear against a komodo. The tremendous creature cried before you - you strained your ears trying to muffle that noise.

Against such oversized animals, it was clear that melee was a dirty, filthy, primitive way of fighting. What kind of fool would risk their robot and their hide to deal with such an overwhelming, brutal, ugly creature simply so that he and his pistil could notch one extra kill on their Franxx? There could be an argument that wrestling or spearing those lowly lizards had a certain chivalry to it.

However, you're not here to duel with klaxosaurs honourably. You're here to wage war on them, to gather all the possible advantages you have against them, combining your strengths together, to crush them in victory, to have them serve as stepping stones to your ascendancy. There was no reason to seek a dreamy hunt with such ugly eyesores.

In other words, 'why don't ya just shoot him'?

You yelled loudly over the comms:
"Genista! Chlorophytum!"

"Futoshi!" You hear Goro acknowledging your voice, along with Mitsuru.

"Genista and Chlorophytum, fire at will on the enemy!" You ordered. You eye Naomi's N-Factor erratically jerk up and down a bit, but it stabilised.

"Futoshi! If we do that you might get caugh-" Kokoro interjected over the comms; The risk of getting caught in Genista's fragmentation was real.

"To hell with that! I order you to fire on the enemy, I don't care if we're in the way! You got that?!"

"Got it." Ikuno uttered.

You jumped away to the left of the 'saur, seeking cover from the incoming rain of shells and magma beams!

The shells practically exploded around you. Burst and boom and bam!

You almost jerk your hands from the controls to cover your ears in fear, before remembering that it was audio feedback. Naomi was shaking, but she was still holding on. You turn off the external microphone.

As the bombardment draws to an end, you stand up the Franxx. The damn animal's core was fully exposed and you simply rushed at it and brutally jammed the spear in.

It cracked, like china.

The rest of the 'saur fell limp dead, splattering you with its blue blood. Just like that, no fancy acrobatics, just brutal artillery and hand-to-hand - a blue charnel house!

The thrill of the kill flooded your veins and Naomi's. Naomi turned around to you, smiling a twisted smile, probably a reflection of yours.

'We did it. We killed a huge Klaxosaur with a Standard Franxx. On our first sortie no less'. That was what the crazed look on her was for, trying to tell you that.

"Target..." You breathe.

"...neutralised." Naomi finishes.

---

The Franxx finished docking back in the hangar. Both Naomi and you clumsily climbed out of the cockpit, still giddy with joy at your kill. Jesus Christ, the platforms are a falling hazard.

"Well, we're off to a good start." Naomi snarkily commented.

Unfortunately the good start would not last for long.

You heard the sound of a pistil's shoesteps clattering on the platform. The steps didn't sound demure like Ikuno's, they weren't tippy-tappy like Miku's, nor midgety like Ichigo's and Naomi was right behind you.

"Futoshi, please don't risk yourself like that again!"

She made the damn effort to go over to Naomi and your part of the hangar, to tell you to not 'risk yourself like that again.' Goddammit, Kokoro.

Futoshi loyalty of 6*7 = 42 against Kokoro affection of 3*10 = 30.

Futoshi succeeds in charming Kokoro.

---

With a sullen expression, you consider the situation from Kokoro's perspective - the risks in that battle were beyond extreme. Kokoro would've been greatly distressed at the possibility of losing an ally.

Fair enough.

You nod in her direction melancholically.

That was sufficient to calm her for now.

Objectively speaking, calling for Genista and Chlorophytum to fire near you played with risks that - from a certain point of view, weren't worth it. Besides, it even contradicted one of the conversations you had had with Hiro - that 'victory mean survival.'

You leave the hangar, keeping your thoughts to yourself. Naomi was left wondering alone why on earth Kokoro was on the Standard's platform.

---

You finish your dinner quickly due to the strong hunger you had acquired.

It is late afternoon.

What will you do before bathing with the other boys?

You see Ichigo seating herself on the couch. You seat yourself opposite of her.

"That was reckless as hell." Ichigo reflects while you apply your portliness to the sofa. Thankfully, you hadn't gotten worse in that regard over time.

"Maybe, more of a calculated extreme risk, but even then, that's the lizard's problem, not ours." You chuckle lightly.

"I honestly would've expected a more moderate level of risk-taking from you. Wargaming with Ikuno and you told me that much. Speaking of which, we're playing Cannae tomorrow." Ichigo referred to 216 BC Carthage-Roman battle of annihilation.

Yes, I had Char's Zaku II and Shiro Amada's style upgrades in mind. The focus however remains on tactics rather than fighting directly. If you contact Doctor Franxx and have enough favor he might even be able to copy other armaments of the Custom Franxx for you if you enough favor. Hell, you can even come up with a hypothetical specialised command suite for the Standard cockpit. It's entirely up to you.

"Guess you have a point"+"Powerful fireteam" succeeds

---

"Guess you have a point. Command risking themselves like that probably chafes on squad morale." You acknowledge Ichigo's concerns about how risky your earlier artillery attack on the klaxosaur the klaxosaur had been.

Calling artillery on your position was the stuff suicidal samizdat authors from Russia were made out of. Your goal here wasn't die for Papa. It was to climb influence through your victories and that meant staying alive.

"Still, Genista's Rook Sparrow artillery piece and Chlorophytum's Wing Span guns allow them to make for a powerful fireteam together regardless. If we have enough distance" you rub your ears, remembering the shockwave of Genista's fire "the two of them can easily dispose of any of those disgusting animals without getting yourself dirty." - Melee was a filthy affair.

"Hey, hand-to-hand is alright!" Ichigo giggled at your lambast of mano-a-mano.

"Yeah, but we're not out here to duel them, we're here to kill them." You retorted jovially back.

You excused yourself, your little tactics chat with Ichigo reaffirming you.

You bathe with the rest of the boys. Aside from more banter about your tactical insanity, there wasn't else much to discuss.

---

You decide to discuss the formation of the European Union, a 20th and 21st century customs union that emerged out of the various treaties and arrangements that had emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War. To be honest, one could not talk about the European Union without discussing the renewed desire to live in peace among the peoples of Europe after the War.

As Winston Churchill - not exactly a very slim man himself, put it: "We must build a kind of United States of Europe. In this way only will hundreds of millions of toilers be able to regain the simple joys and hopes which make life worth living."

That was the background out of which the the countless institutions that wove together to became the EU came of - one of near-abject devastation.

---

In 1951, the European Coal and Steel Community was established with the goal of coordinating German and French heavy industry together. The French Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany, or West Germany, seeking to develop economic interdependence in contrast to the autarky which had been a spark for WW2, agreed to the Treaty of Paris which formalised this. The 1958 Treaty of Rome would then cement this, providing the real basis for the EU.

Following this, the 1963 Élysée Treaty saw President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer meet. Franco-German ties further developed with the signing of this Treaty, which saw the French and German governments cooperating on a variety of issues, such as defence and education.

The 1993 Maastricht Treaty saw the establishment of the Euro as a common currency. The 2009 Treaty of Lisbon, against the backdrop of the Great Recession, further brought the government of the European nation-states together.

The Union was brought under strain during its later years. However, for the at-the-very-least half-a-century or so when it existed, a period of relative peace was experience by the continent, economies growing to new heights.

You conclude the lesson on a wistful note. All of it had been lost. But for the blip in human history it had existed, it showed factions coming together, even only if pragmatically, to try to improve the common human condition, no matter how idealistic it seemed. {+100 Loyalty AP for next loyalty roll}

The lesson draws to an end. You go to bed.

You walk into the common room and stretch and yawn lazily.

"Ayaaa! Aayaaa! Man, I feel so lazy today. For goodness' sake, I'm supposed to be wargaming in the library, but dear Papa and the Adults have to take away my free time. To be Futoshi is to suffer. Such sorrow, such sorrow, such lament and sorrow!" You theatrically exclaim in the common room.

The other children paused a minute to gawk at you like some kind of animal just walked into the room - with the exception of Naomi. You observed their reactions.

Kokoro simply covered her mouth in shock, Miku was pretending to be shocked, Ichigo was just gawking, Ikuno just shook her head and continued reading and Naomi just gave you a knowing look.

Hiro just didn't care, Goro tried to act like nothing had happened, Mitsuru looked pissed but was otherwise quiet and quite surprisingly Zorome wasn't particularly shaken although he was fidgeting nervously.

There was more fear of Papa than loyalty to him, so it seemed. Fertile ground for more subversion.

Good.

---

The Plantations, when viewed from outside of the confines of the Mistilteinn sections were huge. Huge.

The squad Franxx pairs, you among them, stood abreast, waiting for the auditorium to open.

The platform, itself large by any standard, began to show just how small it was when it began trembling. You were almost unsure if the carpet would stay still or not. The auditorium opened and thousands of the much-talked-about adults entered your view.

You could not deny that APE's theatrics were impressive. You felt your hand going cold. Your pinky, bound with Naomi's, was probably letting her know what was going on in your mind.

No, her pinky was cold as well.

One simple objective - bear with it and keep up appearances. Freaking out now would have no purpose. Bide your time, bide your time, bide your time...

Dammit.

You weren't feeling so good.

The Great Pruner just had to rub it and wave your mortality in you face - and then turn it into an official exhortation.

I pray that you will become a shining ray of hope for humanity.

The Adults followed suit, giving their false applause. You almost felt yourself leaving your body.

Too big - too large - too powerful for any one person to fight - that was APE.

---

At the end of it all, back in the lockers, you managed to collect your. You found yourself breathing heavily, your face flushed with the reddest, anger possible. Your body was practically begging you to gorge on junk, yet you somehow managed to prevail, albeit by an inch.

APE sure knew how to put on a show - this was worse than dealing with the Mohorovic klaxosaur. You continued breathing, heavily and urgently. Your lips were parched.

You weren't such an invincible archangel that little show of Papa's didn't leave you shaking to your core. This was the power of an illusion - the ability of state propaganda to awe, to terrify, to bring to submission those who would dare to act against it. The sweat was trailing off of your back as if you had been in the wasteland.

As you clumsily change back into your usual uniform, you hear a distance voice calling at you.

Something poked you and you jerked in fright.

"Oi, Futoshi, you alright?"

It was just Zorome.

---

You finish dinner with the rest of the squad at the same time - the Startup apparently had wrecked your appetite that you had to spend more time chewing and forcing down your food down.

Sunset paints the bookshelves orange. Ichigo and Ikuno wait for you.

"Good day, Consul Varro." Ikuno wits. "You look like you saw a ghost."

You take a look at the wooden coin on the table. Ikuno's legend had marked it such that it meant you would be the player of the side that lost in reality. She never lied to you about this before, so she had no reason to about now.

You looked at the initial deployment. Victory would be a hard call - the Romans had already deployed in deep formation, the source of their downfall in the first place. You seat yourself down and examine it, looking for any potential option you had.

The fate of Cannae rested on what would happen to both sides' cavalry.

2*4=8 Ikuno AP against 6*3=18 Futoshi AP

Futoshi succeeds.

---

'Dirty melee'. 'Melee is filthy'. 'Melee is primitive'. These were the maxims that you had come up with just yesterday - you see no reason why it couldn't apply on Cannae.

"So, my cavalry advances over here..."

"My Numidian cavalry gives pursuit to them." Ikuno responds.

---

"Ah...shit." Ikuno says inelegantly.

Roman pila were a miracle of the classical universe.

Nonetheless, Ikuno pressed on and attempted to repeat the double envelopment nonetheless.

---
...It ended up as a bloody charnel house in which both sides lost their cavalry - yours only from sheer attrition - creating an ugly mess of Carthaginian and Roman infantry hacking each other to gruesome, inglorious death. Ikuno's semicircle barely held on and at the same time, your deep column of Romans could not crack through it - a draw.

"Draw?" You ask.

"It's a draw. It's too painful to watch." Ikuno conceded.

Ichigo just looked on, shrugging her shoulders at the absurdity of what had transpired.

The two of them left the library.

You headed to the bathroom.

---

It was in the baths, when you overheard Zorome chattering on about what would be a crucial piece of intel for you.

"...hangar staff were blabbering on her. Fanged. Horned. The Partner Killer."

[] "Stop talking about girls in the bath." Prime everyone to be more serious. +100 Cunning AP for next cunning roll tomorrow.

"Sounds like vicious slander to me." You remarked.

Zorome tried to banter back to assert his words, although they just came across as childish nonsense.

"...Horns..." Hiro muttered, staring pensively into the bathwater. He rubbed his head, as if it were struck by a ball.

You glimpse Mitsuru mouthing smugly, apeing Hiro by also stroking his head in mockery. Well, whatever he had against Hiro was his problem.

From a game design perspective, Futoshi's stats are becoming quite cumbersome to handle. Maid RPG attributes seem to be logarithmic.

What are your thoughts on me reassessing everyone's attributes and implementing in-game notebook where what Futoshi learned literature is instead translated into discretionary one-use +100AP bonuses? For example, 22 Command gets converted into 3 Command and 19 one-use +100 Command AP bonuses of different flavours which only apply when the situation is relevant to the flavour?

K girls, it's time overhear what boys like to talk about.
>>
>>2681866
That seems reasonable, but it also seems like a book keeping nightmare. If you can hold it straight in your notes to apply to the relevant checks or categorize them into a format for perusal, I think it'll put us on a more even keel with the rest of the cast, who ostensibly took some effort to improve themselves during their formative years, but are stunted by raw stats.

Do you have an alternative base stat progression in mind or are we going to try to run the wheels off our current stat block?

>[] Go eavesdrop on the Hiro and Goro as a group. {DC 16}

Unrelated, but important: We need to make contact with Mitsuru. Not necessarily as an ally or friend, but for context: It won't do to be blindsided.

[] Go eavesdrop on the Hiro and Goro as a group. {DC 16}

When will Hiro meet Zero-Two and become her partner already, don’t tell me we need to have Ichigo end up severely injured for it to happen.
>>
>>2682516
We could just end up with a scenario where we end up with having to order Hiro to ride with either Z-2 or Ichi for their Franxx's loadouts depending on which operation we go on.
>>
>>2682516

That's unacceptable. Under no circumstances are we risking our second's life (intentionally or not) for some metagame matchmaking.

Unless Hiro drops out of effective Sync range with Ichigo, he's staying with her. If we're explicitly ordered to provide Stamens for Nine Iota, we'll push a non-confidant, and try to minimize damage across the team. If we're given useful latitude in roster selection, we'll be able to distribute the damage across non-essential pilots. Under that natural strategy, we might even discover Hiro's inherent resistance.(If he even has it in this run)
>>
>>2682606
He should still have it, he did lick her blood afterall. Won’t be surprised if meeting Zero-Two would cause Hiro sync ratio’s with Ichigo to drop. Not even a clue on how stable they are in the first place. And besides Strelizia is a much better combat asset than Delphinium. All we need to do is have a reserve stamen to end up piloting with one of our pistils if Hiro indeed swaps to Zero-Two, as that likely would have Goro try to pilot with Ichigo.
>>
>>2682657

That's not necessarily true: She's powerful, but unstable.

The most deadly weapon in a tactician's arsenal is repeatability. If we can't stabilize Nine Iota, let her go kill some other Parasite team.

Yes, it fucking hurts to say it, so don't call me heartless.

4*8 against DC of 16. Miku succeeds.

---
You decide to vary things. You wait for them to arrive.

---

Naomi and Miku make their way to your table.

"So, what will we be learning about to today, Futoshi-sempai?!" Miku cheerfully chirped as she rushed into the library.

You chuckle lightly at how she referred to you.

"Today we're going to do something different. We're going to snoop on Goro and Hiro."

Miku rubbed her hands mischievously. "~~Tee hee~~"

"It would be good to know what the rest of the Squad is talking about." Naomi reflected. "Speaking of which, you've heard the rumours that came from the hangar staff, haven't you Futoshi?"

"Ah. Something about a partner killer? Coming here perhaps?" You traded words with Naomi.

"That's the rumour. If it's worth anything, then we need to be more watchful. If she turns out to be some swallow spy from HQ, I especially don't want you to be compromised by her." Naomi asserted as the three of you began to make your way to the mansion staircase - she was simply stating the obvious.

"Ooh, you're more scared of some red boogeywoman eating our mentor alive than me, the devious goblin Miku, stea-?" Miku interjects.

"Shut up Miku." Naomi gently tells her off.

"Silence is key." You mumble as approach Hiro and Goro's room.

Miku takes the initiative, leaning against the door. Naomi follows her and then you listen in as well.

"...like I've heard of her before." You overhear Hiro.

"You should definitely look into it if tha- no, scratch that, don't stray from protecting Ichi- if you really want to then-" What a tortured bumbling man Goro was.

You head back to the library to discuss the gossip.

---

"Hiro is clearly intrigued by this so-called Partner Killer." Naomi assesses. "That may be an asset or a hindrance to us depending on how we handle this, Futoshi."

"Can I just point out how sweet Goro sounded there? 'Protecting Ichig-'" Miku gestured a pair of glasses with her fingers over her eyes.

You firmly place your hand on the table to cut short Miku's frivolity.

"So what's your decision, Futoshi?" Naomi asks of you.

[] "We'll make Hiro the 'raven' if she comes here." Have Hiro get close and monitor her if she arrives.

[] "I'll be the 'raven' myself if it comes to that." +2 Nine Iota flags, +1 coercive Naomi flag.

[] "We stay the hell away from her and make efforts to conceal our activities." It's self-explanatory.

OOC: Alright, so I've made changes that ought to be noted.

Futoshi and the rest of P13 no longer have godlike attributes. What they've now got are a mechanic called 'Historia'

https://pastebin.com/6S3dF62m

> Historia:
>Historia represent a +1 roll bonus to a skill, based on a compelling experience/flashback in the past, either personally experienced, witnessed, read or watched, giving willpower to the present. Noticeably, Futoshi has a lot of Command and Cunning Historia. Each time one Historia is used up, it is written into the story. There can only be one Historia for one given set of facts. Once Historia are used, they are written in the the Historia record and the same facts cannot be used again.

>Historia can be gained through dramatic in-game events or as the name implies - studying history, as demonstrated by Futoshi and those in his inner circle.

In particular you may note that Futoshi has the following Historia:

4 Loyalty Historia
18 Command Historia
17 Cunning Historia
8 Luck Historia
13 Will Historia

"Let's wait and see what happens when she gets here before we make a final decision." You declare.

"And here I thought we were plotting something devious. Oh well." Miku exaggeratedly expresses her disappointment.

---

There's no debate that there would be deviousness - the question was whether to spring it first or wait for them to make a mistake.

You head to bed.

---

"For want of a nail..."

---

What it a dreamless sleep? Or did you have one? You couldn't tell.

---

You rise and shine.

An extreme feeling of unwellness seems to permeate your body - a mixture of nausea and anxiety. You quickly rush to the bathroom to wash your senses back into yourself.

Restored, you begin to in discern from the morning breakfast chatter that something was slightly amiss. It was as if an unpleasant, dirty intruder had invaded your home with bad intentions - yet at the same time, the chatter was of a squad that wanted to get on with business despite whatever absurdity was happening.

Well, you weren't going to let a little bit of something unusual get in the way of the most important meal of the day.

As you got closer to the mess, you overheard Miku:

"...off her hat, how rude!"

You carefully inch closer to the dining room. You peer from the edge of the door leading into it.

It wasn't the young woman that captivated you - it was the uniform - at least that was what you told yourself. And the shako adorned on her head, indoors no less - rudeness or martial pride?

The goddamn shako. What year was this? She wasn't a French Foreign Legionnaire was she?

'The most beautiful girl or woman in the world would be a matter of indifference to me, but tall soldiers-they are my weakness'. It wasn't the girl wearing it, it was the uniform itself.

A pure white shako with red highlights - a dainty little orange tie - six butto-

You heard Naomi clearing her throat. Ah, yes. Breakfast.

---

That red uniform - and the shako, of course, the shako - was a distraction to say the least. You were actually managing to eat at everyone else's pace.

Given what you saw from here, the rumours about 'fangs and horns' definitely sounded like slander. Were they talking about the shako? Given how those red lines ran up, you could see how spiteful pistils could concoct such vitriol. The shako. Like a giant hot cross bun begging to be eaten, dripping with jam.

In the end, there was more than the shako of course. The spartan way she ate, a single elegant spread of honey over toast - spartan. She ate it all clean - not a crumb wasted.

Still, in the end, it was all about the shako.

Breakfast ended and all there was left was to decide where to go.

The entire squad killed, thats literally overreacting. Let Hiro handle Zero-Two in the way he feels fit. Moment they both realize the Mindwipe will ensure their rebellion so they can stay together. >>2684225

I won't be able to convince you. I'll remind you that when Hiro treated Nine Iota as he saw fit, it nearly ended with his death, the injury of the entire squad, and her attempted suicide.

That's no way to run a rebellion. She can be an asset, but we cannot indulge her self-discovery at the cost of our own blood.

And besides, it's less us saying "don't be attracted" and more "you can't simply serve APE and be in love at the same time, and APE will never have your best interests at heart so you may as well join us in the Rebellion so you can love someone in the open.

You talk about leading a rebellion but the moment there are no emotions in our actions, we'd just replace Papa with a new Papa at this rate.

---

You glance at Naomi the usual glance for meeting alone in the library.

She acknowledged your gaze - albeit in a considerably less lifelike way.

---

You made your way into the relative privacy of the library. Ikuno could not overhear the two of you from here.

"Well you certainly enjoyed yourself at breakfast this morning, didn't you? Your shirt's all sweaty." Naomi sarcastically tore into your behavior at breakfast - there was no need to slap your face to make the point.

You silently stare off blankly. It was only the uniform, but of course, straying eyes were grossly offensive nonetheless. You could see why it bothered Naomi.

"So, onto business. We don't know what her goals are, we don't know why she's here in P13 of all places and most importantly, she obviously has the ability to distract '''us'''." Naomi deliberately intoned.

"Got any ideas on how to deal with her, big boy?" Naomi casually asks you.

You know. that's not only entirely fair, but frankly undisputable. I'm mistaking quiet for peace. We need that catalyst for emotional awakening even more than we need a physical or ideological one.

We can't play it safe, because mitigating risk is only worthwhile if we make progress as well, and my tack was going to end with death by apathy.

> The seducer uses Affection or Cunning (or possibly another attribute, with the GM’s permission), while the target can use whichever attribute they wish, in an opposed check.

Shako Girl '''deliberately''' uses cunning instead of Skill or Will. Futoshi uses Loyalty+Historia. Shako's 3*6 against (4+1)*4. 18 against 20. Futoshi succeeds.

---

Speaking of sakura, your mind returns to a time in the Garden when Kokoro gave you a single flower. In the grand scheme of things, it did nothing, but you were having a particularly bad day that day - Rudolf the Reindeer had nothing on you.

"Excuse me. My n- Code is 214." Who knew what level of formality was appropriate - stilted as your speech was, it was going to be necessary. "These are my allies", you referred to Miku and Naomi - well, it was technically true in that they were allied to you more than as Franxx pilots - "Code 390 and Code 703. You would be...?"

The girl in the shako smiled in response and replied, "Pleased to meet you. I'd be Nine Iota. I heard you and Code 703 killed the Mohorovic from earlier. I saw the footage for myself. It was rather impressive. I think I ought to mention it to Papa."

You held off on trying to deal with the implications of what she just said. You focused on trying to establish hospitality.

"Nine Iota, would you like to have tea in the library with us?" You asked.

"I'd be honoured."

Such courtesy from a young woman. Why couldn't you be like that Miku?

You heard Miku sneeze from behind you.

---

The four of you seated yourselves in the library, having managed to actually create a decent atmosphere for talking.

Naomi took the lead, "Sorry to be so curious, but may I ask why you're here at our humble Plantation 13?"

"That would be simple. I've been assigned as an attaché by Papa to oversee the development of Squad 13. Given both you and Code 214 killed a Mohorovic before, that's all the more reason for me to be assigned here."

Well...

[] Boast to Nine Iota that Squad 13 shall surely impress her and Papa.

Thus begins the dance.

She's different. Good different? I failed to consider that a healthier Nine Iota might be more cooperative with Papa. Compromising her might be a good play in the long run.

Then again, it's also possible that this is entirely a front. We won't really know until we see her pilot.

"I'm flattered by your praise of us. It's an honour to be acknowledged by a Nine. As such, please enjoy your time at our humble Plantation. If you have any questions to ask, please feel free to have Code 703, 390 or us answer them." You welcome Nine Iota with grating formality, playing the part of a gracious host.

"Thank you very much for your hospitality. I look forwards to consulting with you on matters involving P13."

Good. '...consulting you on matters involving P13.' That meant you could control the way P13 was presented to Papa - at least some good could come out of this.

"I have matters to attend to with the Defence Commander. Please excuse me. You've been a most gracious host."

Nine Iota leaves her seat and makes for the exit about to leave - and curtseys ever so slightly, as if to give proper closure to the meeting.

"Hey, why did she bend her knees like that?" Miku asked.

"An old formality." You remarked.

Naomi clears her throat. "Now that's over, I just want to say that was fake as hell."

You grunt in agreement. Elite Child soldiers did not pick up etiquette like that out of nowhere. There was an element of deliberateness to it.

"Still, she said she's willing to 'consult' with us." You observed.

"And that's our victory for the day." Naomi said, as her fingers reached for yours under the table.

---

Lunch was a somewhat harder affair with tea earlier.

Nine Iota was not present - she was probably consulting with the Defence Commander after all.

Conrad-class (コンラッド級): small Klaxosaurs. Even smaller than a FRANXX. Presents not much of a threat. They move quickly, rely on strength in numbers and can merge to create a bigger Klaxosaur.
Mohorovic-class (モホロビチッチ級): medium-sized. Can pose a serious threat to the plantations if left unattended but otherwise harmless.
Gutenberg-class (グーテンベルク級): large, intimidating and demoralizing to look at. Their siege weapons are capable of destroying plantations. Requires a joint operation to defeat.
Super Lehmann-class (超レイマン級): gigantic Klaxosaurs, having at least the size of a plantation. They are to plantations what scissors are to paper and can withstand an entire plantation exploding in their face. Requires an army and a massive amount of effort to defeat.

In-game, this is actually happening before the anime magma mine battle where Mitsuru sperged out.

---

Just as you place the last morsel into your mouth, the Plantation klaxon - how appropriate, given the klaxosaurs that assailed Plantations - started ringing.

You promptly started rushing to the elevator to the lockers.

---

The siren might've been somewhat unwarranted. As you seat yourself in the cockpit with Naomi below, Hachi informs you on the comms:

"On a second assessment, it might not be necessary to immediately sortie. The klaxosaur in question seems to be remaining stationary."

A video feed of a huge, towering, giant klaxosaur pops up alongside a topographic map. The klaxosaur was located deep in a depression. An alternate view pops up.

The klaxosaur - labelled a Gutenberg class - seems to knowingly wave its arms at the VTOL camera. It you were to anthropomorphise it, it possibly could looked like it was taunting the VTOL pilots.

Zorome complains over the comms: "What, if it's not attack, what's the problem?"

You look at the cockpit video feed once again. The Gutenberg starts scraping at the ground, like a child digging dirt.

"Given that this Gutenbern-class Klaxosaur seems mostly stationary, we will call off the sortie for now. In any case, be prepared to return back any moment. You are dismissed back to your quarters."

What on earth...

---

You change back at the stamen lockers.

"Seriously, what a waste of time. It's just messing around, why call us up?" Zorome complained.

"Hopefully it goes away." Mitsuru comments mellowly.

You walk out of the lockers and back into Mistelteinn.

You search for Nine Iota.

---

You find Nine Iota yet again wandering about the sakura grove, pacing to and fro. You approach her:

"Excuse me Nine Iota. Have you ever seen a klaxosaur just digging around and not attacking a plantation before?"

"The ones in the field where we Nines work seem to act purposefully to some. Don't kid yourself though, they're just dumb monsters."

"Where you work?" You mumble in curiosity.

"Near the Gran Crevasse. Gutenbergs and Mohorovics roam it. Ah-"

You stare in curiosity at the mention of that place.

"I shouldn't be telling you this, but it's what Papa wants the most."

A pause let's you process the information she just gave you.

"Anyways, would you like to take a closer look at my Franxx?"

She referred to Strelizia. It was docked in the hangar, although you didn't get a chance to study it due to the call to arms earlier.

"Anyways, would you like to take a closer look at my Franxx?" Nine Iota had asked you.

"Yes please." You replied. Whether it was for gathering for intelligence or reviewing the capabilities of a potential ally, analysing a Nine's Franxx could only be good in the end.

This so-called military attache business of Iota's was not necessarily a bad thing. What really mattered was how it was used and handled.

---

From the bottom of the hangar, it became clear what a lumbering titan Strelizia was.

Nine Iota narrated to you its capabilities:
"This is my Franxx, Strelizia. That giant lance there is the Queen Pike. Its gigantic magma spearhead allows you to stab right through a klaxosaur's core and it can load a booster canister to unleash a devastating surge of magma energy if stabbing it isn't enough. But that's not all about the Queen Pike. The spearhead can separate and from there, you can reel in any klaxosaur that's trying to run away."

Evidently, Iota was rather proud of it.

"Strelizia's vernier thrusters allow you to jump high into the sky, letting you return down from an arc, using the force of gravity to help you accelerate your spear deep down into your victim. Against such power, how can a 'saur resist?"

You gazed upon it. Strelizia's pauldrons were simply gigantic. Veritably, it was an Iron Maiden, emphasis on 'iron'. Again - 'The most beautiful girl or woman in the world would be a matter of indifference to me, but tall soldiers—they are my weakness'. Strelizia's horn just added to it.

She continued, "Strelizia can theoretically yield an output three times more than a Standard Franxx's. My battle record more than shows what this means. If you can kill a Mohorovic-class klaxosaur before your official first day with a triple-digit pistil roughly five hundred Codes bigger than you, just imagine what you can do with Strelizia. What do you reckon of 002 and 214, "Futoshi"?"

Well she was certainly snooping around enough to get to know people's nicknames.

DIALOGUE OPTIONS

[] "Superweapons have never won wars by themselves." You do not need a super-Franxx to win.
[] "Code 703 and I share the same goals. I cannot say the same for you." Boldly dismiss that idea. {Nine Iota will roll for charm against you with Skill}

[] "I'm tempted to have the both of us enter the cockpit in our pilot suits." Maybe to just get a feel of what piloting Strelizia would be like, rather than actually piloting it. +1 Nine Iota flag
[] "I think that sounds like a good idea." See if it's possible to pilot with Nine Iota on the next sortie + 2 Nine Iota flags

[] Charm, Skill: "Imagine if the Nines actually had a capable tactician in their ranks..." +1 coercive Nine Iota flag

USE HISTORIA?

[] NO
>>

As tempting as the first option is, saying that "we do not need a super-Franxx to win" gives off the impression that we're cutting ourselves off from ever attempting to influence Nine-Iota over to our side. But bringing up our relationship with Naomi will risk a nasty leak and having Nine-Iota pick up on that even harder than she already is and potentially blackmail us with it.

I have no desire for us to get close with her in this fashion and bringing up the Nines might come off wrongly if we fail the check.

The future is... clouded.

If that silence meant something, then it no doubt was worth investigating.

You belly growled in hunger, thrice no less.

You actually manage a relatively normal dinner - yet again, Nine Iota was not present.

I'm beginning to resent our treatment of Naomi. The best loyalty comes free. Having one person in the plantation that is entirely clad to ourselves and our cause is literally priceless. To squander that is the ultimate in hubris.

I agree so much with this. Pissing someone who idolizes you off is a good way get murdered by them in a crazed fit of jealousy. Maybe that’s how it’ll all end after we rebel. Papa won’t even lift a finger.

We do not disrupt our routine just because we're working up a sweat. The Machiavelli of Cerasus is better known for smelling of floral soap than of gym socks.

Absolutely foul

---

You were going bathe twice today.

Beyond simply hygiene, bathing was a relaxing social occasion and where there was socialising, there were intrigues and gossip. As you have now come to learn, where there was either of that, there was an opportunity for leverage over the others. Beyond the overthought scheming however, there was also a chance to just simply befriend each other.

You head to the bath.

---

You never placed too much attention to it before, but you'd always been sitting from the rest of boys even as you've contributed to their conversations.

"...so I tried talking to her and she just kind of looked down on me. Way to ruin my confidence!" Zorome, always the talkative one, complained about Nine Iota.

"I heard her stamen's in the infirmary. The Nines must fight some pretty hard battles. 'Partner Killer' might be just slander." Goro contributed. "What about you Hiro, what do you think about her?"

Hiro pensively stared into the bathwater.
...
..
"Nine Iota scares me."

"Huh?" Zorome blurts out. "Honestly, some pretty Pistil out of nowhere walks into our Plantation and the first thing you tell us about her is that you're scared about her? What kind of man are you?"

"I'm not surprised a single bit. I'd be scared too if a Nines elite pistil went into my plantation - and I remember what kind of stamen I am."

Mitsuru just ruined the mood. A piercing quiet raised everyone elses' eyebrows.

He continues, somehow shamelessly managing as if he never said that to begin with "Still. I wonder what kind of pistil she is. I heard her Franxx is very powerful."

"Oi, did you forget that she's called the Partner Killer?" Zorome cut in.

[] Remain silent and continue listening passively.

[] "I'd settle for artillery support over an unreliable superweapon any day." Genista is more useful to you than Strelizia. +1 Kokoro flag
[] "I'm interested in what kind of Franxx Strelizia is also. But we ought to concentrate in getting used to our own weapon systems."

[] "Speaking of which, she offered to pilot with with me earlier in the hangar. I didn't exactly accept her offer." Mock Mitsuru's eagerness.
[] "Yeah, I reckon Strelizia would look really nice doing raising its pike in command. I thought so too in the hangars with Nine Iota." Taunt Mitsuru and observe Hiro's reaction. +1 coercive Nine Iota flag.

Normal boy antics - for what passes as 'normal' in a world full of Child soldiers - are incredibly entertaining if you remove yourself from them and attempt to be above the fray. It resembles a horde of mangy rats fighting each other for the the last morsel of cheese.

"Partner Killer? What superstition. How is an ace Nines pilot who kills hundreds of klaxosaurs supposed to be dangerous to her partner? Nah, I don't believe the rumors, it's bull." Mitsuru continues with bravado.

"So, do any of us actually believe it then?" Goro asks.

Zorome plunges his hand into the bathwater, making a splash. "If there's rumours, then there's some truth to it, so that means she's dangerous as hell." Such was the tendency for the talk of young boys to devolve into utter speculative garbage.

Hiro just continued to shrink at the discussion as if a wind of terror was wept up by the simple mention of Nine Iota.

In summary, with regards to Nine Iota - Mitsuru wanted to ride with her, Goro didn't mind, Zorome didn't exactly like her and Hiro...

The last time you saw a mood as low as that in Hiro was when he had returned from the Garden Labs on that faithful day.

You head to the library in wait for Naomi and Miku.

Either this Hiro is a bit more chicken, or there's something seriously wrong here. What happened in the Garden for THIS Hiro?

Best case scenario is that APE got smart and ingrained a phobia into the boy. Things get worse from there.

>Either this Hiro is a bit more chicken, or there's something seriously wrong here. What happened in the Garden for THIS Hiro?

Have we ever seen Dr. Franxx yet? Maybe he has different methods, or goals, this time around. He was too involved in the incident. APE may not differ from canon.
>>
>>2691103

This whole thing is going to be ridiculous if/when the QM breaks from canon.

In the meantime, we need to find the opportunity to sound out Hiro: We just told Ichigo to go with her gut, we need to know what's chewing on his.

No references have been made to Werner FranXX at this point.

If he was removed from the picture, This whole thing suddenly got a whole lot more intriguing.

It also suggests that Nine Iota might actually be here in the capacity of a political officer; which is even worse than Futoshi's theories about spying.

I'd prefer if we can avoid having any of the P13 hung for treason.

On our terms, not hers.

In speaking of; I'm suddenly concerned for Naomi in a completely different manner than earlier.

See, if we don't have a partner, Nine Iota gets to have the black horse 3-digit Stamen to herself.

It's a pity she doesn't have the authorization, clout or physical brutality to solve that problem right?

Right?
>>
>>2691177
It is a posibility that she may try something, but I whink we are safe at least until after the next sortie when her present stamen dies. She also wanteed to show off so she can lure us to pilote with her.

You decide to focus on the Pacific Theatre, with Iwo Jima as the highlight.

You relate how the Empire of Japan entered a state of war with the United States of America with the Pearl Harbour attack, with the goal of crippling the Pacific Fleet that Japan could buy time to complete its takeover of the Dutch East Indies and British Malaya and then fortify those positions so that any counterattack by the Allies would be too expensive to attempt. {+1 Skill Historia}

"That's just stupid then." Miku commented.

"Jingoists are stupid in general, but if the Empire of Japan was going to get the morsels of oil to continue their little holiday in China after getting sanctioned by the US, they had to get to the East Indies and the so-called 'ABCD Line' theory of theirs completely justified that. That stupidity didn't just come out of nowhere." {+1 Skill Historia}

Miku just smiled smugly, clasping her hands for you to continue.

---

"...Iwo Jima was defended by a general that wasn't a fanatic, by Imperial Japanese standards at least. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi had thoroughly fortified the island with an extensive network of tunne-"

Shit. Tunnels. {+ 2 Skill historia}

"What's wrong Futoshi?" Naomi asked.

"Nothing. So he fortified the island with tunnels. He executed a defense in depth, trading the beachhead for the higher inland. While the Marines won, it was one of those battles where American casualties were higher than Japanese ones."

How many Franxx battles were there where Children casualties were higher than klaxosaurs?

You forced yourself to continue. "Of course, in the end, the Marines captured the island, at a rather higher cost." {+1 Skill historia}

The lesson draws to an end. Miku goes to bed, leaving you and Naomi to head to the bath together alone.

---

"You had something on your mind." Naomi stated. Lazily slouching in the bath, the water covered her form.

"The Gutenberg's digging. It digging with purpose." You mumble tiredly.

"And what are you going to do about it?"

"The Defence Commander needs to know. So tomorrow, I'm going to talk to him."

"That's a good idea, Futoshi."

Naomi quietly made her way to your side and seated herself next to you, the splashing of the bathwater echoing in your ears.

She latched onto you. "Futoshi. You protect me and because of that, you are my lord and master. So please..." From the curtains of her hair, you gazed into the sincere window of her souls - brown eyes, deep and contemplative, "...keep protecting me."

I don't even read the smut, but there isn't anything off brand about her.

The biggest mistake they made in the show was not giving her more screen time to hammer home how strange Hiro's circumstances were: Might have had an interesting angle on how no amount of effort can compensate for a complete lack of chemistry.

In setting, she is our queen. Ironically for her complex about being protected, she's the one that's keeping us alive out there.
