Optimistically, the war will be over by the end of the year. But they've been singing that song for the last two. Somehow, it's always another no-name town or nameless field or unknown hill and the war drags ceaselessly at the edges, until the world gets swallowed whole.

Can't be much more now.
How much more do they have to throw into the grinder?

Allright - listen up.

This is an EXTRACTION.

IntelSection has that the Pytherians are working on something right bad up in the foothills. While Isvind Command barrages down the lines for a distraction, we're going on a smash-and-grab raid. So pack light and bring lunch, Trenchers, you're going outta country.

Target is one "Tveilirisk", a Sarethian engineer. Get them, as much of their work as you can, and while you're out there, procure as many Pytherian corpses as possible.

IntSec can't be sure what's waiting for us in Foltern. But expect Tveilirisk to be guarded by a platoon of pathfinders. That's the garrison in general. There'll be a Theurge or two along to oversee operations and ensure "compliance". Tveilirisk' personal guard are near the centre of the site. There's two of them.

No reports on vehicles, but expect a reaction force of Light Walkers and more pathfinders to be sent on if any of the officers manage to get a signal out.

Unlike in Imai, that means the Officers will be paying attention this time around. Remember the rules, trenchers

Theurges and Soulless aren't nice
Shoot them twice.

Just for you Trencher. Just for you. And your reminisences bring a smile to this old record keeper.

In order!

Yes it is that game with that grave

It is still absolutely is pick up and play

If a player goes AWOL characters CAN be botted, but mostly remain stationary and [overwatch]. If it goes on longer, they [retreat] off of the field, to be redeployed.

Naming conventions among Trenchers tend towards the Short, and Meaningful.

Dogface
Deadman
Duck
Sloth
Pinwheel
War Bastard

Call signs more than names.

Well, since you ask so nicely, Rookie!

You can bellyflop on open ground, and it will provide some small measure of defense. Preferable, something that looks like cover helps a lot more. And if in doubt, remember your MULTITOOL to BUILD YOURSELF some CONVENIENT DEFENSES

You roll under or at the DC - in your case, 10. You can always spend AP to increase your effective skill by +1 (Taking longer) or burn Focus (Taking no time at all, but you only have so much focus to spare in a stressful battlefield).

YOu don't roll when Overwatching - Command does that when the effect triggers.

It varies per action. If actions have no specific cost, the actual cost is 1. For SCAN this is because you want to SCAN for 1 AP, but you really, really want to spend +AP for Range or Effective Skill.

It means that... well, if we told you what it meant, you would Know Too Much

>>
>>2681486
For the Chirni, every 3 ammo spent gives +1 to the roll - and then when rolling, every 2 by which you pass your target is another shot hitting the target.

eg: 10 accuracy
burn 6 ammo
roll vs 12.
Get 10 - you hit on 10, you hit on 12 - two shots.

While burning more bullets to hit target sounds good - and it is - it is also precious ammo wasted, and a light unit like a trencher only carries so many reloads!

And no.
Our guns are not compatible with the Pytherian ones.
>>
>>2681493
A single AP to Construct or Destruct for 1 Point.

That means erecting an improvised cover only costs 3-4 DR if you want a relatively effective one.

If you wish to remove things from the map, you will have to spend required points to reduce effective stats to 0.

For building things, it is a little easier.
>>
>>2681494
In the specific case of these elavated positions, you cannot climb them unless you construct a stairway that reaches their elavation, or finds the ladders.

Or other, esoteric means.

Sorry, that's the benefit of the Pytherians having this entrenched position.
>>
>>2681495
How big do you want it, Trencher Arkul? You can burn a clean trench if you harness your... oddity...

Or you could STRING OUT a relatively defensively position if you:

>Dig for 4 AP in Hex 1

This gives you a 4 hex defensive position with DR 4

It is a both a measure of your current closeness to death - being depleted upon attacks - and used to resist, shrug off and put off things that a healthy body would naturally resist.

Constructing takes 1 AP per height level you build up.

So if the outcrops are 4 above you, the staircase takes 4 Ap to reach there.

String out is mentioned in the rules under the character sheet. It applies a given pool of [COSNTRUCT] to all hexes indicated - allowing you to effectively multiply your construction, or continue a given action.

The example is indicated that you buy dig a trench in one hex, then STRING IT OUT in two connecting hexes. . . allowing you to build things faster, as long as it is one big project.

So for instance:

>4 Points of Construct
>[Detonator] 6 AP
>This generates a 4d3 explosive, as indicated
>+6 AP with 6 Focus
>String this out in surrounding 3 hexes for 6 AP

And presto, you've wired up a 4d3 explosive in 4 hexes (The initial, and the 3 you STRUNG OUT into)

You can move anything within [GRIT] range that is the same hex size, or smaller than you.
You can move things outside [GRIT] range if they start within GRIT range (eg, grab something and move it 8 spaces when it started 1 space away from you - but you could not do the inverse, of
taking something 8 away and moving it closer unless your grit was 8)

Spend 2 AP to [accelerate] an object. When you [move] it, it moves [Hex] x [Acceleration]

Now this is looking like a proper trenchers kill team, lads. Get to.

Up top, the surviving pathfinder sprints across the planks. Unbelievably, Killjoy misses his shot - and the man gets off a grenade that covers the approach of his two peers. They fill the air with bullets, as does the squad of pathfinders aproaching from the north; remnants of Valiant Shadows squad (And his last command, before death to unfortunate frag grenade).

Rookie's quick trenchwork saves the day, as bullets hit improvised barricades and bits of scavenged cover.

Good job, Rookie.

if you can force the Pytherians into a situation from which they cannot escape, they are men just as you and I and will quit.

And there is no need to murder frivolously.

This is harder to accomplish if any THEURGES are still alive, for they instill LOYALTY and FEAR in the vermin hearts of the legion.

The Standard is raised high, is capturable, and is on the outcrop.

It rolls gently in the wind, the prideful thing.

Capturable items come down to field provisions, enemy equipment stored in boxes and marked depots. All trenchers have 2 skills - ACCURACY and FIELDCRAFT (beartrap symbol)

A cunning Trencher could use FIELDCRAFT to scan the battlefield.

After that, have him order everyone to surrender. The battle is lost, they've been outmaneuvered, they're low on men, and they're going to die soon.
If they refuse, especially his own bodyguard, then take the bodyguard out first. Have the Target point-black shoot him in the back with his rifle 3x if he doesn’t surrender.
Otherwise, if it's the theurge who doesn't surrender. Then move 6, toss 2x grenade at the theurge, then move 6 5 and surrender to the guys above him.

For me:

"Necessities of war. And it's what you're good at, Trencher"

Reactions keep you alive.
Primary component of much fewer than 63% casualties is people remembering to DODGE.

Dodge rolls your reaction versus incoming fire. Don't worry about rolling it yourself, Command does it if it comes up (and you are dodging).

If they hit you with their accuracy, but you manage your dodge versus your own reaction, you step outta the way and don't get shot. Or stabbed. Or eaten.

Which, incidentally, is why you tend to fire more one bullet or be in cover. Dodging is fine defenses versus low volume fire, but to really survive, you want to [TAKE COVER] which intead applies a damage reduction to any damage you do take (as the cover absorbs it. Once the cover is shot to pieces, you're next)

Costs the same for all trenchers in which they aren't listed.

Crunch (which is just my fancy word for Effect) is what Tech Specialists do. And what Resonance Operatives do, but in a different way. On their rolls, they get base effect (think of it as "damage") equal to that stat.

This explains Resonance Operatives a little - so "Fire" is 11 but Minds is 7. Both have a base effect of 3 which will work on a succesful roll, but Fire is just easier to manipulate so one spends less time fussing around burning Focus or Ap for +Skill and can load all that into +Effect.

Say a Resonance Specialist wants to burn you with Fire - they roll 3d6 versus 11, gets 7, their base effect is 3, they've just thrown 3 fire at you, ouch. "But that's barely better than a gun", I hear you say, because you are an EDUCATED ROOKIE CONVINCED OF THE FINE SUPERIORITY OF RAPID FIRE ARMAMENTS

That's true!

But then the Res Bastard goes and >Sustains an ongoing effect for 3 AP and hits you for 3 fire again, without even needing to roll. Or he hits an nearby tree to light it on fire. Or he threw some extra AP at [Effect] and [Skill] and suddenly its not just you who are on fire, but you, your buddies and all the ammo in your guns.

Glad they're on our side.

Same goes for Tech, who conveniently, if they hack or spoof or scan have a base effect of 3.

So one might need to hack into, say, the control system for a Pytherian Light Walker, Vindicator Class. It might be said to have a Defense of 9. So a Tech Specialist with 3 Crunch would need to slap its defenses down 3 times before it was wide open. Or do it once, burning AP for effect.

Why might you want to do it just once?
. . . Because if you can hack them, they can hack you - and if you flop it up, Trencher, you aren't the only specialist out there. Backtracing is as thing, wire daemons are a thing and drone feedback is certainly a thing.

Grit? Rolls?

You're a psionic curiousity friend. Within a range denominated by your GRIT, you can simply spend AP for yourself or any other unit, interchangably. That's still your AP, but it just so happens you're a little less. . . body bound . . . than the rest of us poor sods.
>>
>>2682020
So [GRIT] denotes the RANGE in which you can do it, spending AP is what you can do (Maybe you want to spend 4 AP to make someone DROP THEIR GUN or 3 AP to shoot... something?)

It also turns out you can apparently flashfry the small neuron connections in people's brains, make them forget the colour purple and shrivel up and hurt. Relatedly, I have painted a yellow line in on the ground in my office, and you are to stay on the other side of it at all times or the MPs have standing orders to shoot you. A lot.

To do that little trick, it doesn't look like you have to roll the slightest thing. You Just Do It, and people's brains Just Start Hurting.

(Presupposing no defenses. Theurges and shielded individuals might resist this kind of thing with their FOCUS stat)
>>
>>2682022
"Now why might I want to spend a lot of effort and energy harnessing my abnormal psychic might to crush people's brains like grapes in the telekinetic thunderhammer that is my manifested will", you ask yourself, LIKE A CLEVER TRENCHER.

Well.

There is such a thing as /walls/ and /cover/ and /smoke/ and /obstacles/

A cunning Trencher could realize that lots of the limited talents we try to procure and train in our nightmare of an outfit might have little range, induce strain and not beat trusty Chirni in the pain delivery department, but Trencher: This one you get for free

If you can do it within GRIT range at no cost to any humanoid target you can sense, you ain't need to worry about walls or intervening obstacles at all.

Well you spend it for yourself because it's your AP.

But you can also conveniently reload a friendlies gun by jiggering their fingers a little.

Inconveniently arm an unfriendlies grenade...

Same AP pool, but within [GRIT] range, you happen to have the gentle option to take actions for other people. That is, your exert a subtle psionic domination affect that allows you to spend your AP to make other people perform the very action you might want them to do.

I have just painted a red line in my office.
If you cross that one, the base self destructs.

So to answer your questions after "My own AP". . .

No, can't transfer to yourself (They don't have the capability. If you found someone who had the ability to grant other people AP, you could certainly make them grant you AP)

Can certainly spend yours to take actions for them. They perform the action. This applies to hostiles too.

As for Trial and Error, that is the intention.
>>
>>2682104

>Why? because accuracy overall works for most things, but specifically combat walkers utilise servos and extra armour plating to hit a lot harder, more accurately.

Little Man --> Pilot + Passenger capacity. Up to 4 trenchers can "Ride along" on a walker. They're not inside it, they're on it, and are not shielded.

Shield/ArmorPLate --> DR. Either of armour or of vehicle.
Crosshairs --> Accuracy
Bear trap --> Fieldcraft
>>
>>2684529
One would notice immediately that that Pilots have no reaction stat, nor a Grit/Brawn stat.

This is intentional. A Pilot inside a mech cannot dodge. The vehicle simply does not move that fast. This is also why you want to make sure that Pathfinders or other pytherian sappers don't get into the dead-angle behind your vehicle, because it would take a pilot 6 AP to turn around cycle facing to meet them.

The vehicle itself also doesn't have a grit, and you can't push your limits when the machine is doing most of the heavy handling for you.
>>
>>2684533
But why can't a mech overwatch? At least in one facing arc?
>>
>>2684561
Is anyone saying they can't? Take it up with the pilots spreading false rumours. Overwatching relies on your accuracy, and nothing prevents sitting at the mg, primed to fire.

Reaction is for getting out of the way, reacting rapidly versus environmental influences (Such as grenades) and not dying.

Cannons are fine for shooting, and in some cases, give the sluggishness which with the average vehicle moves, you may even want to bait someone into wandering into your prepared line of fire.

>Knife 1d3+M
+M means +Margin?
>>2681705
>A shame. If someone rolls the 9 with a fieldcraft of 12, margin is 3 which gives +3 health?
I'm guessing this is the case for margin, it has to be at or below the DC and remainder is margin? Meaning a knife can overwhelm the DR of a heavily armored soldier or one in cover in a single attack compared to having to expend lots of ammo for it?
Does fighting in melee ignore cover?

>>2682020
>Which, incidentally, is why you tend to fire more one bullet or be in cover. Dodging is fine defenses versus low volume fire, but to really survive, you want to [TAKE COVER] which intead applies a damage reduction to any damage you do take (as the cover absorbs it. Once the cover is shot to pieces, you're next)
Does cover block against all shots while a person is taking cover for the entire turn? Do multiple actions for taking cover stack?
Cover is directional?
>>2681970
>Does Dodge work once for one shot attempt?
For example, if a person attempts to shoot at someone 3 times with Dodge, would it attempt to dodge all 3 times or only the first? If 3 people were to shoot at someone once, would it dodge the first shot from all 3 or only the first person who attempted the shot? Does dodging last the entire turn?
Is dodging directional?

>>2681657
>That is - if they move into your facing direction or if they were already there, but act against you.
When moving into one’s facing direction, it only counts moving to another hex, not stances like dodge or taking cover? When someone acts against you, say shooting at you or priming a grenade, overwatch only triggers once they shoot at you or throw the grenade, regardless of whether it succeeds?
>>
>>2687500
M is margin, yes.

And yes, melee can. The assumption there is that a well aimed attack ( roll 6 vs 14, get 3 + 8= 12 damage) will aim for where armor is not. You aren’t putting a knife through a steel plate, but an armor gap.

Fighting in melee does not ignore cover unless you are in the same hex. And cover is a - to hit (stabbing through walls = diificult )

Yes, all sorts
No, you get the cover there is / you make
Yes - white lines with a number indicate which direction cover helps against
( incoming attacks may blast apart cover, so attack 3 in a turn may be worse than 1 or 2 )

Dodge three times ( at increasing penalty of -1 per attack )

Attempts versus all three ( at increasing penalty )

Lasts the turn

Yes - all units have direction. Can’t dodge what you can’t see.

As for overwatch, you have it for stances and movement, but not quite attacks - the overwatching party usually fires first, then the hostile (if alive). Primed grenades would get dropped...

You can overwatch conditionally (“when targets do XXX”). And Command tries to make overwatching as useful as possible, so interprets in player favour.
>>
>>2687500
( note that melee doing +M is meant to model that to even get into melee, you have to cross the battlefield - making movement an implicit part of the AP cost to melee attack. Since usually, you’ve got lines of fighting, melee places you out of cover closer to the enemy.

Rolls cap out at 18, so the best possible hit is 3 + 15margin = 18 [melee] dmg.
To pull that off, you’d need an effective skill of 18 and a roll at 0.2 % occurence!

Trying to charge then shank a tank will not end well for you! )

(( but melee conserves ammo, and might be the only viable way to damage some foes that don’t heed bullets... ))

((( also: stealth. )))
>>
>>2687556
(((( literally though: Sigilwalkers and other [b]heavy[/b] foes take no damage from melee ))))
>>
>>2687544
>M is margin, yes.
>And yes, melee can. The assumption there is that a well aimed attack ( roll 6 vs 14, get 3 + 8= 12 damage) will aim for where armor is not. You aren’t putting a knife through a steel plate, but an armor gap.
14-6=8 margin, 3+8 margin=11 damage. I'm guessing 3+8 margin=12 damage is a miscalculation?
>>2687556
>Rolls cap out at 18, so the best possible hit is 3 + 15margin = 18 [melee] dmg.
>To pull that off, you’d need an effective skill of 18 and a roll at 0.2 % occurence!
Wouldn't a roll of 3 at 3d6 be at (1/6)^3 odds, making it ~0.005 or ~0.05%?

>Dodge three times ( at increasing penalty of -1 per attack )
>Attempts versus all three ( at increasing penalty )
Is it possible to stack dodges? Would having 3x dodges allow 3 dodges per attempt, or increase the amount of dodges before the penalty kicks in?
Are there limitations to dodging and cover? For example, it can't defend against explosives, elemental, mind, or hacking attacks?

Are there any skills related to intimidation or diplomacy, for getting the enemies to surrender or coaxing them to give more intel when captured?

>Fighting in melee does not ignore cover unless you are in the same hex. And cover is a - to hit (stabbing through walls = diificult )
You can move in the same hex with an enemy? I didn't know you could do that. Does shooting at them in the same hex at them ignore cover as well?
A high roll, high damage knife attack is still reduced by DR like bullets as normal?

>Yes - all units have direction. Can’t dodge what you can’t see.
>>2681309
How does the facing coverage go, if a unit faces 1 it covers 2 and 6, but 3, 4, and 5 are exposed or not-covered areas? If an enemy is within another unit’s field of view but neither in your facing nor field of view, your facing only adjusts once you’re acted against, and thus overwatching in return? Overwatching is not wasted if facing has to adjust to respond to an enemy action?

>>2687544
>As for overwatch, you have it for stances and movement, but not quite attacks - the overwatching party usually fires first, then the hostile (if alive). Primed grenades would get dropped...
So in a queue of shooting each other where both sides face each other, the overwatchers get priority? What conditions would give the non-overwatchers priority?

>You can overwatch conditionally (“when targets do XXX”). And Command tries to make overwatching as useful as possible, so interprets in player favour.
Same goes for interpreting shooting in our favour?
When overwatching multiple times, does it prefer to stack overwatches to focus fire on individuals? If a shoot or overwatch order to focus fire on an individual is done early, say shooting 3 times at a person only needs to be done once to kill them, is the other 2 automatically moved to any other available targets or is it wasted?

*Actually on looking at my stats one more time, my ROF is listed wrong, since my skill gives me a bonus to that.

I would actually greatly appreciate an explanation on how ROF works in this game, so I can better make use of my bonus here. Thanks Command.

Yes. Math - it's a peculiar enemy, especially when responding in a hurry.

--

No, can't stack dodges.
Can spend more Ap to get better dodge (Keeping in mind that dodge works off of reaction, and one can simply spend more AP to improve a dodge)
--

Cover is ineffective against chemical spray attacks (fire, gas). And is directional, so is something you can flank.

Dodging is ineffective against hacking, mind bullets, most directly offfensive spell effects (which target your soul, not your physical presence)
--

Try Fieldcraft. And be convincing.

--

You can move into the same hex as the enemy, if the enemy is a small infantry unit. Soldiers don't occupy the entire hex (They take about 1/6th of it). Cover shouldn't apply, but I say "shouldn't" because it depends a bit on the nature of the cover. A trencher who dug himself a tunnel and is underground, firing out through a small opening? Still gets the cover, assuming you are on top of his dugout and firing down at him through the tiny opening. If you vault over a single wall to end up next to a hostile, you are past the wall, so no cover.

--

if you're firing at point blank range (same hex), they'll auto-react to whap you with their weapons. Assuming they hit, this also parries your attempt at sticking a gun in their face. The same applies to you, if someone shoots you at melee range and you aren't unconscious.

Sidenote: Don't try to use a rifle at melee range.
Sidenote-sidenote: You also get a free attack against people who, while you're engaging them in melee, try to take a step back to shoot you with their weapons.

And yes, DR still applies on a high roll.

--
Facing you have generally right.

Facing is easier to explain with a diagram, but works such that every unit has a marker of their front. In a line from that (eg: single hex direction) they see everything, while everything else is a cone out from either side. Be facing 2, you have a cone of 1, 2, 3.

"Overwatching is not wasted if facing has to adjust to respond"
- facing won't adjust to respond.

--

Overwatching implies a readiness state, being prepared. If any situation calls for a solution on who accomplishes something first, the prepared attacker gets to go first.

Skills, line of sight (smoke, cover) and tactics get you the drop on overwatching hostiles.

--

It prefers to stack focus fire, assuming you wish to down an opponent. Other shots get used on other people - mostly because shooting as a corpse is a waste of time.

>Command may stop smart processing like this if doing turns for 15 people, simply because it takes a very long time.

--

And you can, with a det charge and a frag grenade but not a pocket knife.

Have 40 ammo.
Have 1/3, +2

Spend 3 ammo. Get +1 to hit. More bullets hit the target every 2 increments you pass your attack roll.

have 40 ammo
Spend 12 ammo
Get +4 to hit
Roll vs 14
Get 10
Hit on 10, 12, 14

(Have 28 ammo remaining and only 2 reloads . . . )

A border hamlet, re-purposed as a mechanized staging post.

We can:

A) Raid during the day, in force (+Supplies, +Hostile Alarm)

B) Raid during the night, carefully (-Supplies, -Hostile Alarm)

C) Organise a distraction by hitting a few outlying posts first ( - initial enemy presence but reinforcements later. Time limit )

Fieldcraft can be used to scout, apply gear, and as charisma? Fieldcraft sounds like the miscellaneous skill.

>Skills, line of sight (smoke, cover) and tactics get you the drop on overwatching hostiles.

>>He intends to [PINCER] by ordering the roof crew to throw smoke grenades *now* and the 3 others to charge.
>>2681605
That explains how this worked.
What sort of cover? Cover from outside or blocking line of sight? Charging from a trench where the enemy can still see you isn't going to do anything?

>It prefers to stack focus fire, assuming you wish to down an opponent. Other shots get used on other people - mostly because shooting as a corpse is a waste of time.
>>2681674
I'm guessing overwatch and shoot actions don't spend ammo if the target already dies or there is no target by then.
>>2688492
>>Command may stop smart processing like this if doing turns for 15 people, simply because it takes a very long time.
Stopping smart process in interpreting in the player's favour for blanket actions or conditional commands like conditional overwatch? Either way is fine. There isn't much we can do to simplify inputs as is.
Does overwatch function like any other source action? Any overwatch can use [Evaluate] as normal, shooting overwatch can expend extra ammo, and mind bullets and primed grenades can be done in overwatch? Multiple overwatches can be queued or stacked if the source action allowed multiple actions? Are overwatch charges possible, say charging or jumping into the enemy hex to melee them if the overwatcher really wanted to?

>>2688492
>And you can, with a det charge and a frag grenade but not a pocket knife.
Can we then enter the mech with a pocket knife or can we only destroy or disable it with explosives?

>Spend 3 ammo. Get +1 to hit. More bullets hit the target every 2 increments you pass your attack roll.
>Hit on 10, 12, 14
Does this apply if you don't expend ammo, reaching a 6 on a 10 skill with the default 1 ammo shoots 3 bullets?

>C) Organise a distraction by hitting a few outlying posts first ( - initial enemy presence but reinforcements later. Time limit )
Is this a single mission with more phases or mini-missions before the big raid? Will this have less supplies than A) Raid during the day, in force (+Supplies, +Hostile Alarm)? What's the time limit?

ROF sort of models actual bullets spent. Firing one ammo is one bullet. Same with overwatching - no shot, no ammo spent. Overwatched burst? Lots of ammo spent.

Controlled bursts. Or you’ll run out. . .
