The words you just had said to you over the phone are so strange that you have to repeat them. "You want me to become your Queen? Become Death? What do you mean?"

"I like you a lot Alice," Michael replies. The boy who had been just a boy (albeit cute) up until the moment you realized he was the ancient god Baphomet in some kind of human disguise. "I think I might love you. I want to be there for you, to help you, to protect you, to grow with you. This is a role I think you could fill well, it would suit you."

To be Death? You'd never been invited to fill a god's role before, let alone one of the least glamorous ones. "Death is something to be avoided for as long as possible," you retort. "Only life is worth the effort. Death comes on its own."

"So it does," Michael says. "The oceans exist without Poseidon as well. Things will have two natures with or without me. It doesn't mean it's not a power to be harnessed and controlled. Fearing death is cutting yourself off from half of existence," He pauses, "Although perhaps my own perspective on the world is coloring my view."

"That's the problem," you say "I've always thought like a mortal, because I was raised as a mortal. I can't just take what I thought I was and throw it behind me . . ."

"I don't expect you to, Alice. I'd be overjoyed to help you make this transition from old life to new. You're between worlds right now, as much as you might pretend or wish you're not. You're as much a part of my world as you are of the human one."

"I still don't see myself as one of you," you say "I am human, no matter my heritage."

"You may find that changes," he says.

I allow between ten and twenty minutes for voting depending on the importance of the issue and how divided the vote is. If the vote is tied up, I usually allow an extra five minutes for a tie breaker, and if no one votes, I roll for the tie breaker.

I always try to incorporate (and encourage!) write ins if they don't violate the spirit of voted decisions, though I may edit or tweak them to fit better.

"Why are we talking about this?" you ask, remembering suddenly that you have other concerns. Baphomet wasn't the only god courting you. A god once called Moloch, but now called Rot is after your affection and blossoming power. Complicating things, Rot appears to be your true father. Father or not, you've had enough of his threats, add to that the very real possibility he killed your parents. "I want you to tell me what I can do to destroy Rot."

"Yes, my apologies. We will have to work together on the 31st," Michael says, "We can destroy him then I think. He created you to be the key to free him, but I think we can use this against him. If you'd like, I can hold him in check when he emerges, and it will be up to you to finish him off."

"What about . . . Others. Would Poseidon help us?" You don't know if Poseidon is real, but it's the first god you can think of.

Michael chuckles, "No. Our problems are beneath most of them. Others would want something in return. A price neither of us would be able to pay. I'm sorry, but this is between us."

You frown, lying on your back and talking on your phone, staring up at the ceiling. Your biggest worry just a month ago was what you would wear to the Halloween Ball. But now . . .

"What happens when we destroy him?" you ask, "Would I have to leave my sister? My friends? Zack?"

"If we defeat Rot- when we do, then he'll be gone, Alice. He won't hurt you, your family, or anyone else again. You won't have to leave anyone if you don't want to. Any followers of his that may remain won't be able to harm you, or would be too afraid to. They would answer to me." He says the last sentence with a bluster you don't normally associate with him. "Your life wouldn't change much if you didn't want. I would be surprised if the others even knew Rot was still alive."

"And what if I do want to be your queen . . . To be death I mean. Hypothetically."

"Hypothetically?" Michaels says the word like a curse, his voice soft, almost pained. "I would be overjoyed Alice. I could show you all there is to know about Godhood, perhaps together we could make a place for ourselves. Maybe we could finally find happiness." he lapses to silence. "That's your choice of course."

"So you won't teach me that stuff unless I promise myself to you?" You ask, distaste clear in your voice.

"I'll be happy to teach you what you'd like to know either way," Michael says, "I- well you know how I feel."

"You don't think we can beat Rot?"

There's a pause. "I don't know. I don't know if we can because I didn't expect Rot to get as strong as he has. Still, I think he's afraid of you, Alice. That means we might have a chance at beating him. We have to try."

"Why do you hate each other anyway? How did this whole thing begin?" you ask.

"That's . . . Old history," Michael says. "It's complex. What do you know about my history?"

"I know that you were the god of the Templars. It seems like you and Rot have some kind of history in Europe. From my Friend's dreams."

"Yes," Michael says. "The Templars . . . To be a god, you must be the god of something. You gain power through worship, sacrifice, devotion. One soul given freely is worth a hundred taken by force. People no longer worshiped me for who I was, things had changed and so I lived 'behind the cross' so to speak. I was a major force behind Christianity. Around that time."

"You tricked people," you say coldly.

"I tried to help them," he returns. "Miracles aren't free. Guidance isn't easy. People turn to religion in times of need. While they sustained me, I did what I could to deserve that devotion but . . . Humanity is a big tangled mess."

You don't disagree, "And then?"

"And then Rot arrived from the east. A god of sacrifice, destruction, consumption. He saw a chance for power and took it. He infiltrated a movement to reform the church as it was, to curb perceived excess. He spurred violence and sought to topple things, so I fought him." Michael's voice is shaky. "It . . . So many people died, Alice. Many people died in a struggle over who would control the worship of others. Would it have been better to step aside and let Rot rule them? I'm not sure. I know now that regardless of what the right decision was, ruling over others that was wasn't right. Rot wasn't defeated, but was driven away, to the New World. I surrendered my position to stronger gods and followed him here. I knew that he was dangerous. He's too hungry, Alice. He wants too much and won't ever be content. I believe he hates me because I won't yield to him, and I hate him because people like you are just tools to him, Alice. Your parents, so many others are fuel into a fire that won't stop burning, not ever, not until it's extinguished for good."

"I think you made the right decision in trying to stop him."

"Thank you, Alice. I'm glad that you think so. I think the outcome is self-explanatory though."

"Does Rot have anyone helping him? Besides his cult I mean."

"No one," Michael says. "No one I know of. Rot was not and is not popular among our kind. He was always able to curry favor among humans, usually the greedy and desperate. His cult will pose no threat I think. They are simply more afraid of him than they are of me or you."

You blink rapidly a few times. You're starting to drift mentally, more exhausted than you realize.

"Will he do that again you think? Try to take power?"

"As far as I know that's all that he craves. A power hungry god is a dangerous thing. This sort of power should not be wielded lightly."

"What about the stronger gods?' You ask, "There are others?"

"Many. I used to be among their number, among the strongest. It turns out that power has a price I am not willing to pay. But there are others."

"Any I might know?" you ask.

"Not personally," Michael says, you can tell he's smiling. "Hades, Dagon, Enki, Isis . . . There are all types, Alice. Some known, some unkown. I've tried to keep a low profile so I can't comment on the specifics of their power structure. We have formed pantheons from time to time, but generally live isolated, private lives. Yo advertise your presence more than necessary is to invite trouble from those who seek it, like Rot."

"Hades?" you repeat one of the names you recognize. "Is real?"

"In a sense. Your own myths and legends generally have a basis in reality. Not always, but sometimes."

"Yeah, but I thought you said there was no Death God."

"It's not a role he fills any longer," Michael replies. "It's . . . Complicated."

"So why did you change? You don't seek power anymore?"

"The cost. The price is too high and I grew weary of seeing others pay it," Michael says, "I've been . . . What I am for a very long time and I had believed I could wield such power fairly. Suffering in life is unavoidable, even the best intentions can lead to personal hell, but I felt that if power were concentrated in me that I could balance these things, at least keep it out of the hands of those worse than myself. . . I grew accustomed to it. I've seen cities burned, people slaughtered, live destroyed. It was too great a cost just to tell myself I kept worse things from happening."

"And with all that you still found something about me to be interested in?"

"Life is fascinating," Michael says, "Human life doubly so. They're a step away from godhood in many ways, and you in particular are half a step closer. I used to think I was just watching you from idle curiosity but I see in you a great potential." he stops, like he's choosing his words more carefully. "I can't explain in clear terms how I feel about you Alice, but I have never felt it before in my existence. Not so clearly. Perhaps my weaknesses and shortcomings- perhaps what I lack is humanity. Something you have in abundance. Perhaps you can succeed where I failed."

"And where is that?"

"Wielding power."

"Are there any others like me? Do the other gods use humans as surrogates?"

"They can. They have. Some of our number began as you, more mortal than divine. They do what suits them usually. It's not common, but it's not rare. Most gods do avoid meddling directly in human affairs unless it benefits them. I know of no other demigods that live as we speak though."

"Does that mean it's not a big deal to them? I mean, what will they think if they find out about me?" you ask.

"They'll fear you, Alice. A young goddess like you is a big deal. I mean . . . You will be- might be. The old order of things could be upset. If you continue in the accumulation of power, it will mean colliding with their interests. It's . . . Very political. I don't think that will equal direct danger to you but-"

"But nobody likes the newbie," you say.

"Something like that. They will not try to strangle you in your crib, so to speak. But they may be curious about your intentions and motivations."
>>
"And what if I tell them 'I'm Baphomet's Wife, the Queen of Darkness and Goddess of Death' what then?"

A silence. "They may find that alarming."

"Oh. Wonderful," you roll your eyes.

"It's impossible to say, Alice. I don't think you should be worrying about the politics of gods, not while you're still a mortal. This is all hypothetical,' Michael's voice is soothing and smooth, almost unnaturally so, you wonder how much of that is his body and how much might be his true form.

"So what do we have in terms of allies? Do you have a cult like Rot does?"

The question seems to surprise Michael because he doesn't answer at first. "I do. It's small in number, but carefully selected. I draw most of my power from them."

"What do they get out of it?" you ask.

"They see reason in my cause. They know the threat Rot poses, they believe in balance and moderation."

"A Church of neutrality? Sounds bad ass." you say mockingly.

"It's not quite neutrality, Alice . . . " Michael sounds a little hurt.

"I'm just teasing," you reply with a yawn.

"Wait, I'm a demigoddess and a mortal?"

"Yes. You have an ordinary mortal lifespan ahead of you so far," Michael says, like he was telling you the time.

"So hang on, you said that there would be . . . changes . . . when I get closer to becoming a god. I'm not going to hulk out or turn into a beam of light on Halloween, am I?"

Michael laughs softly into your ear through the speaker of the phone. "Nothing so dramatic. When and if you become a god, you won't find the changes to be very stark."

"What do you mean, 'if'? I thought I was going[/I] to be a god."

"It depends on many factors," Michael says. "As it stands, you have every chance at living a normal human life . . . Aside from your stranger abilities. The accumulation of enough power may change that. It's not something you have to worry about right now. I will discuss this with you when the time is closer."

"Also, what exactly is going to happen on the 31st? How will I know what to do?"

"One the 31st, you will be sent for and taken to Rot's point of imprisonment. It will be . . . Tense I suspect. Something like a truce between enemy armies that is about to end. Rot will be freed and then . . . I hope you will join me in destroying him."

"What about my family and friends and stuff? Will they be safe?"

"Yes. Rot will not harm them because he is afraid. If he knew that your protector was gone, he would have not stopped. Your Friend hurt him. Not enough to weaken him, but enough to make him let you go. I don't think Rot will seek you out unless you call to him again. If he should return, you may call for me. I will not let him harm you or your family."

You're at a loss for a good response to what he's said, thinking only of what your Friend had said before giving his life to protect you.

"It's late Alice. You need rest. You can call to me if you need me. And I don't just mean on the phone. I don’t think I'll hurt you the next time we speak. Good night."

"Goodnight," you say. "And . . . Thank you."

"Of course, Alice."

"I'm sorry for your loss," you add, feeling a little silly blurting it out at the end.

There's a long silence. "Thank you, Alice, but you've lost more than I have. I should really be apologizing to you and I'm sorry for not realizing that. If I can accomplish my aims here, then you won't have to lose anything else. Goodbye."

The line in your hands goes dead.

That night, you don't dream. You sleep soundly. It's the first time you've ever missed your strange dreams.

"Hi Mr. Cherna!" Sam calls to Mark who is leaving the house for his shift when you and Sam enter after school

Mark blinks surprise as he is not Mr. Cherna. "Uh," is all he says.

"Hi Mrs. Cherna!" Sam says when you see Grace before leading her upstairs. She's at least slightly more correct now.

"Oh. Hello!" Grace smiles at both of you. "You girls going to be hanging out?"

"Working on costumes," you say.

"Ah right, the dance is Saturday right?"

You nod.

"Well . . . Don't make anything too . . . " Grace swirls her hand in the air at a loss for a word.

"We won't," you say, suppressing an eye roll. Safely in your room, you close the door and breathe easy for a moment before Sam's arms are around you. You catch your breath and stammer. "Wh-wha?"

She squeezes you once and releases you, "Are you okay, Alice? You're not yourself you know? You're quiet . . . Like the kind of quiet you used to be I mean. What's wrong?"

Your gaze dances between Sam's eyes, your mind struggling to think of what to say. She was asking for the truth, and you didn't want to give it to her.

It takes a few minutes of abstract discussion of the strange before you can segue into how it applies to you. You show her your powers, invisibility, moving objects around and the like and she can only watch slack jawed and wide-eyed.

She panicked at first, but you managed to calm her, show her that you were still Alice. Once she'd accepted your powers, you told her about your Friend and about the gods.

"Wow," Sam says, "I mean . . . They sound like a couple whiny kids."

You break a smile, feeling some tension fade away. You'd expected more trouble, but she'd taken to this quickly. "They basically are," you say. "I mean, goatman . . . Michael . . . He's okay. He means well at least. Rot though . . . "

"Sounds awful." Sam finishes. "Wow . . . That's crazy, and that's been going on this whole time!?"

"I've only known a few weeks," you say.

"Wow," Sam says again, "I can't imagine."

"It's . . . " you feel a sudden welling of emotion, all that you've been through, all that you've lost. "It's . . . "

Sam is putting her arms around you again before you realize she's moved and you're hugging her back, your face on her shoulder as you start to cry, drawing in shuddering breaths, "It's so much."

Sam rubs her hand up and down your back slowly, "Shhhh. It's okay."

You don't know how long she holds you like that before you start reigning yourself back in, sniffling and drying your eyes with a sleeve.

She lets you go slowly and you sit back up, regaining your composure. "I haven't . . . I couldn't tell anyone," you say.

"Wow. I'm . . . Sorry Alice. That's so horrible. I'm glad you told me but . . . "

"It's alright," you say, "I know there's nothing you can do."

"I can listen!" she protests, "I can . . . Be a good friend for you. I'd send Rot to the Shadow Realm or whatever if I could."

You give a weak laugh, wiping your eyes again. "Thanks."

"So . . . What are you going to do?"

"I don't want you to worry," you say. "I just . . . I wanted to be honest with you, I don't like lying to you."

"It's a lot," Sam agrees, "I mean . . . I can't imagine. But . . . I want to help."

"I don't think there's . . . Really anything you can do," you say.

Sam frowns. "There has to be something I can do to help out."

"Why don't we try on our costumes?" you say, "I think worrying about something else might help."

The truth was also that you were still worried sicne you had left out some large parts of your story, namely the part about you killing Ellie's murderer and the sleep murders. You didn't know how Sam would react to that and you weren't ready to find out.

"Sure!" Sam says, her eyes lighting up. "Let's do it.

It doesn't take long to finish helping Sam try on her costume, some green eyeshadow, fishnets, leg warmers, hoop earrings, neon accessories and lots of hairspray. Plus you have some high quality fake fangs from your edgier days. Combine those with her red eye contacts and you have a chilling vision of vampiric death circa 1987.

"Spooky!" you say with a smile.

Sam claws her fingers at you and hisses theatrically. You sometimes forget she was in drama class with Franz and has a knack for these sorts of things. "Will people know what I am?" she asks.

"If not, they will when you show them your chompers."

Sam laughs. "Yours is great too, just don't let your sister see the neckline on it."

"I'll be careful," you say.

"Is Zack gonna be Gomez?"

You frown, "No, he said dressing up isn't really his thing."

"Boo! That's no fun," Sam says.

"I know!"

"So . . . Now what?"

"I've got a movie," you say, "One of my favorites!"

"Something cheesey?"

You shrug, "Sort of. Something with Vampires, and the 80s."

Sam seems interested.

"The Lost Boys."

"Why don't you get Zack to go as one of these guys?" Sam asks, "I mean . . . It's a good look. The blonde guy at least."

"Keiffer Sutherland?" you ask.

Sam shrugs, not taking her eyes off the TV.

You feel a slight twinge of jealousy, "Well I'd rather he go with my costume than . . . "

Sam starts, "No, I just meant-"

"Besides, he doesn't want to dress up. He'll probably just come the way he always dresses."

"You two will look so cute together! I can't wait to see it," Sam says, suddenly looking concerned.

"I don’t have anyone to go with still, though. I might ask a friend from my old school to go with me, I think Franz would be too weird about it and-" she looks at you, "I think it would be weird."

After going home, Sam had dived straight into research about this 'Rot' thing. Moloch. She wasn't going to let Alice face it alone. There had to be something that would help her. She'd googled banishment magic, summoning spells, all kind of things that were probably bullshit. Even so, she wasn't going to let Alice down. She wasn't sure when, but at some point, something changed. She wasn't sitting at her desk anymore, now she was standing alone in the dark, arms limp at her side, eyes staring unfocused into the darkness.

The Shadows around her look sort of like her room, but she can't really focus on it, or look around. She imagined it was like being held in place by a boa constrictor, tightening up after every breath. She was also having a hard time recognizing the room itself since everything seemed to drip darkness.

<Sam.>

She wants to look, but can't. The voice had come from behind her. The smell of wet trash is all around her. Rot.

Oh no.

Sam starts to struggle, to will herself to move, to fight, to scream, but instead she stands perfectly still in a dark approximation of her bedroom. Alone.

<Oh Sam. Dear little Sam. What have you gotten yourself mixed up in?>

She tries to blink, try to open her mouth, but only her slow, rhythmic breathing continues.

Hot breath tickles the back of her neck and the smell of fetid decay enters her nostrils, but she doesn't recoil. She can't. Rot, whatever it was, was right behind her, looming just inches away.

Something tugs at her shirt, something like hands seizing the bottom hem and pulling it up. Her arms go with it, up, and over her head. Sam's shirt falls to the floor beside her.

<Mmm, you poor thing. You must be so very confused. But I heard you. I heard you calling to me. You don't think I can't hear when people talk shit about me?>

Something starts undoing Sam's belt buckle, invisible fingers working on it.

Oh God. Oh no. No please.

<So much that's happening is out of your control and beyond your understanding. And now you've been brought into it by someone who only understands a little more than you. How sad.>

The button on her jeans pops open, zipper running down slowly to a halt while Sam mentally struggles, remembering what Alice had said about that kid who kissed her, how he had been a normal person once.

<Yes. You're going to be useful to me in more than just the ways you think. I'm- . . . Well I'm going to be inside you, Sam, but I don't think you're going to particularly enjoy it.>

Sam's jeans edge down and over her hips until they are sliding smoothly down her legs to pool at her feet.

A tear runs down her cheek as she struggles in vain to move or speak. Again, Sam feels hot, rancid breath on the side of her face. Something is there. Right there.

>>
<Sam.>

Her tear is brushed away while she stands in the center of this shadowy room in nothing but her underwear.

<Your tears won't do you any good, you know. They won't make this hurt any less, or go any quicker. I would explain what's about to happen to you but . . . I think you have an idea.>

Sam's bra clasp pops open and falls away.

<But, still there's no reason to cry.>

Hot hands lay themselves on Sam's sides, just above her hips, sliding up, fingers running over her ribs, stopping just below her breasts.

<Soon you'll be mine, and then you won't mind at all. Now will you?>

Those same hands reverse their course, gliding down, over her stomach until they hook in her panties, dragging them down.

<Soon you'll be all mine.>

With all of her might, Sam pushes back against the force holding her so maddeningly still and manages to let out a small whimper.

In the moment before she was entered, something changed, like a flicker, and a dark, horrible light spills into her bedroom, driving the shadows back. A screeching sound fills her ears and she realizes that Rot is screaming and she's free. Falling to her knees, Sam wraps her arms around herself, shivering and looks up at the figure that entered her room through the wall.

A tall, masculine shape, black against the light spilling in behind it, face obscured in a thick shadow save for glittering blue eyes. His head is topped with horns or . . . Antlers . . . Her eyes seem to slide off them, like she can't focus or count their tips.

<You dirty wretch! You nasty little farm animal! You horrid->

Rot's buzzing insults are dispelled at a look from Baphomet, the Goatman as he drives Rot out of Sam's mind so only the two of them remain, her room now bathed in moonlight that seemed to permeate everything.

Sam draws in on herself, covering her body and looking up fearful at the being standing over her, staring down.

The Goatman kneels down before her and reaches for her, as if to caress her face or her hair, but she draws away. "No!" Sam squeezes her eyes closed, but the touch never comes. When she opens her eyes again, the Goatman has pulled away from her, his eyes invisible in that mask of shadows. She opens her mouth to ask him a question-

And then she's awake in her bed.

Sam exhales and wraps her arms around herself in a hug, turning on her side to cry on her pillow.

You make a trip to work in order to investigate a bit more about the threat you were facing now. Taking the bus to Edenvale is easy enough.

Hecate's Promise was never busy, but there was a steady stream of customer's today. Nicole is running the register, talking Karen's ear off about some kind of unfolding Instagram drama. You'd taken the opportunity to make yourself scare to a cloistered and dusty back corner of the store with your book, "Pre-Biblical Semitic Gods". You'd of course had it turned to 'M's. "Molok's" chapter.

"Molok's legacy is mostly immortalized by his depiction as a ravenous and cruel deity demanding a constant string of sacrifice- specifically of children. Much of what rule Molok may have had in the lives of his followers is left unclear, though the bible cautioned directly against him.-

‘Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molok, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.' -Leviticus 18:21.

This would indicate a persistent belief in this 'heretical' god, even at the time Leviticus was written. It can only be speculated that the Cult of Molok was an enduring and powerful force-"

"More heavy reading?" Lilly asks.

You jump in your chair. "Ah, I was organizing the shelf and-"

"Oh, it's okay," she smiles, "I get lost in books myself. Sometimes I feel like a Minotaur in a maze in here, lost but at home."

You return and uneasy smile.

"Semitic gods?" She reads over your shoulder. "Moloch? Still a personal project?"

You glance back at the book before closing it. "Something like that."

Lilly smiles broader, "Well I think it's wonderful to see that kids are still so interested in the world around us. Why . . . A text book can’t answer all of your questions!"

You nod politely, a hedge that Lilly seems to notice.

"Perhaps it's more historical then?" she waits for you to answer.

"Ah, just a personal interest."

She waits for you to elaborate.

"I think things like this are very interesting."

"Baphomet," Lilly says. "Moloch. Are you learning anything interesting?"

The truth was that you weren't. Whatever the true history or nature of the gods, you weren't going to find anything other than glimpses of it in human writing. "Sure."

After work you'd turned down an offer from Nicole to go to a party with her. It seemed she was dragging Karen along but- aside from the fact that parties weren't your thing- you simply couldn't find much worth celebrating. You had impending Armageddon weighing on your mind.

"Suit yourself," she said, blowing a smoke ring at you. "Maybe next time."

You hoped there was a next time.

The Halloween Dance is coming. The Dance is a major tradition in Roselake, one dating back to the colonial era and has been carried on through the centuries. You've asked Zack (obviously) to be your date, and Sam (sort of, indirectly) as well. You see the dance as perhaps one of your last chances to have something akin to a normal day

The dance will take place on Saturday the 28th. After that, you'll have Sunday and Monday before the 31st comes and the truce expires.

It'd be good to go over some dance details with Sam. Little details like this keep eluding you while you thinking about the future. You're getting off the bus at Roselake when you dial Sam.

"Hello?"

"Hi," you say. "I was just thinking, you probably don't want to ride with your mom, right? And walking seems tacky."

"Huh? Oh. Um. Yeah I don't think so," Sam replies.

You frown slightly, "So I was thinking that maybe my sister could drive us?"

"That sounds okay," Sam says, "Sure."

You pause, "You okay?"

There's a delay on her end. "I'm fine."

You're about to argue with her when she continues, "I mean . . . I had this weird dream."

"Dream?" you feel your skin crawl.

"Yeah like . . . I mean . . . I think. I dreamed that I was alone and I couldn't move and . . . that . . . thing was there. The one you told me about?"

You nod for your own benefit.

"Like . . . He was . . . Touching me and being really gross and . . . Saying things and . . ."

"Are you okay?" you ask, "What happened?"

"Nothing! I mean . . ." you hear her sniff and wonder if she might be starting to cry. "The other one came and saved me I think. The Goat. In the dream I mean."

You fall silent.

"That . . . was a dream, right?" Sam asks. Her voice is shaky, nervous, but there's an edge of hope there.

"I-" you choke, thinking of what Rot might have just put your best friend through. "Sam, I'm so sorry."

Sam's only response is a quiet sniffle.

"It wasn't a dream. I mean, not really I- . . . Maybe you should come over."

"What?" Sam asks.

"Come over," you say again, more firmly. "I know it's safe here. Tell your mom it's a sleepover. We can talk to Michael about what we can do."

"Alice . . . " Sam says.

"Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't know he would come after you or I would have never told you."

"No, noo," Sam says. "I was trying to help you. I . . . I was doing research."

You feel your heart fall.

"I was trying to help," Sam repeats.

"Being my friend is more than enough," you say. "I'm . . . different. He can't hurt me." You think that might be a lie, but you're not sure. "But he can hurt people I care about. Not if you're over here."

More sniffing. "I don't know if my mom will let me, but . . . I'll try okay? I'll call if I can."

"Okay," you say softly, you want to say more but can't think of any words that will help.

"I'll see you soon hopefully," she says.

As you walk up the front walk of your sister's house, flushed with the good news Sam had given about sleeping over, you can't help but think about the past and . . . Batman and Robin. Strange, maybe. But it was a pleasant memory for you. The laughs, Mark's goofy Arnold voice, the popsicles. You weren't going to let the past die like that. You weren't going to let some supernatural bullshit consume you like this. You were going to enjoy yourself.

"Hey, Grace?" You're calling for your sister before you're fully in the door.

"Hmm?" you can hear the sounds of cooking the kitchen.

"Let’s watch a movie tonight."

"Us?"

"The whole family!" you say with a smile. "I uh, also invited Sam to spend the night.

"Oh," Grace thinks a moment, "Well, thanks for telling me ahead of time, Alice." her sarcasm is impossible to miss. "I've already started on dinner."

"I'll order pizza," you counter. "My treat."

Grace starts to argue them seems to remember that you do make money now. Instead, she laughs, "Okay, which one?"

"Surprise me!" you reply, already bringing up the pizza app.

Popcorn is made, , pizza delivered, Sam greeted, the couch is prepared, and Battlefield Earth is on the TV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhNuXvlCTTc

A stinker to be sure, but one that offers no limit to the amount of fun it offers. You and Sam sit on the loveseat beside the couch where Mark and Grace are, and every time Mark does his shrieking John Travolta impression Sam gets lost into a giggling fit.

"Do you want lunch!?" he howls at grace, waggling a piece of pizza at her until she shoves it away with an eye roll.

Sam leans slightly into you on the couch so she can whisper. "Thank you, Alice."

You don't have a good response you just smile back.

AS the movie starts wrapping up with a climactic battle, you start thinking about Mark and Grace. Would Rot come after them again? It seems like Baphomet was defending Sam, maybe he would do the same for your family. You'd have to speak with him after all this but . . . Maybe it was best they heard the truth like Sam did . . . Although maybe they would overreact. You might also just try to get them to leave, or maybe get some closure with both of them . . . Just in case.

Also guys, what do you think of this:
We ask Goatman if he can spare some Friends in exchange for our family and friends powering him up with their worship.
They won't be able to help still, but Rot knows that trying to take over a human powered by a Friend is a painful experience, like when our Friend protected Mark.
In exchange, they can tell Goatman if any family or friend is in danger or trying to help in the fight

You'll tell them if you survive. If they survive. You don't want to think about that.

"Thanks for the movie guys," you say.

"Like we have to twist your arm to watch this shit," Mark says. "I'm the one suffering over here."

"Oh please. You're welcome, Alice. Thanks for watching with us. And thanks for the pizza."

"No problem!" You cross the room and sit between them, turning to hug Grace, which catches her by surprise, she only has time to put one arm around you. You savor it. Your sister who abandoned the life she dreamed of to take care of you. You're not sure if you can ever repay her.

After releasing Grace, you brace for weirdness and turn to hug Mark. "This is new." he says, putting an arm dutifully around you.

"I love you both," you say. "I just . . . Wanted to say it." you smile at them.

Grace smiles back, though she looks confused. Mark does not smile.

"I think we're going to get ready for bed now," you say.

***

You let Sam use the upstairs bathroom first and when she's done, you finish your bedtime rituals. Upon exiting the bathroom, you're startled to find Mark waiting for you.

"Um," he says.

It's unlike him not to be decisive.

"Is everything okay?" he asks, trying again.

"Uh, fine," you say. "I'm fine."

He crosses his arms. "Look, I know it's crazy but I was a kid once okay? I mean . . . I get it. I-" he stops and thinks, "This isn't a talk you should be having with me, I get that, okay? But I'm the guy who's here to give it."

You blink.

"Tell me nothing's the matter, right now."

"Uh."

"See?" Mark says. "You don't have to tell me. I mean, I don't blame you. But, you have to know that your sis is always there for you right? She'd want to know."

"Know?" you ask.

"Know why you're saying goodbye to us," Mark says, not mincing words.

You gape at him. "G-goodbye?"

"You haven't been acting yourself," Mark says plainly. "You're quiet, you're shy. Let's be real, you're broody. This ain't broody. Which is great! Your sister is happy that you're happy. But you don't seem happy to me. You don't hug people and tell them you love them when you plan on seeing them tomorrow."

Oh god, you suddenly realize that Mark thinks you're going to kill yourself.

"I've been thinking about stuff," you say, "What with this guy you had to bash and . . . Stuff."

Mark cocks his head, clearly curious where you're going with this.

"I know now what you're talking about when you talk about how dangerous it is out there. A friend of mine just got . . . Attacked recently. Another Friend . . . I lost. Forever." Before Mark can ask questions you press on. "Look, i just want you to know i am thankful for all you've done for me and that i know I'm not always the best at demonstrating it. I am not happy, but i love you all the same."

Mark is stunned. "It's . . .hard. Death is hard Alice. I mean, shit, I don't have to tell you that." he shifts his footing uneasily. "I know you never got to . . . Say goodbye to your parents and let's be real, you hate my guts sometimes, right? I mean, I can see it in your eyes, you want to knock my block off some days. I totally get it. But . . . Don't ever think for a second that I don’t . . . Care. You know?" he looks extremely uncomfortable. "I lost some friends of mine when I was younger too, so I know how it is."

"Thank you," you say, for a second you think Mark will offer you a hug.

He does not.

Instead you go to him, throwing your arms around him and laying your head against his chest.

He hugs you back. Tight.

"I do want to punch you sometimes though," you say.

Mark laughs, "You're a lot like your sister then. Come on, this is getting weird."

You two end the hug. "Just know you can talk to us, okay? Grace, or shit even me if you think I have something smart to say."

You nod. "Thanks."

"You're almost there, kid. Pretty soon you'll be starting your own life and who knows, maybe your own family. Keep the future in mind."

You nod at one another and Mark goes back down stairs.

You call Michael and explain Sam's "dream" to him on speaker phone while Sam sits on the bed, staring at the floor, hands between her knees, feet kicking idly over the side of the bed.

Michael listens silently to your story, the only sound is the strange warbling static that occasionally interrupts the audio.

"Sam isn't hurt? Is she?" he asks,

"No," you say. "I mean, not physically."

"Good," Michael replies.

"Tell him thank you," Sam says.

"It's nothing, Sam. I'm happy to help. I would never want Rot to hurt anyone. He's already hurt too many people," Michael says.

"And I'm sorry I uh . . .that I didn't . . . " Sam struggles for the words.

"Everything is okay," he says. "I understand."

You're not sure exactly what they're talking about but you forge on. "You said he wouldn't come after my friends."

"I didn't think he would," Michael says. "I'm as shocked as you. I'm glad I was there for her. I think that Sam may have accidentally have attracted his notice with her thoughts . . . Like a splash on a pond, he saw the ripples."

"Whatever," you're more concerned with Sam than some pseudo-science god stuff. "Do you have like . . . Some other . . . Friends that could watch everyone? Or could we give you like a boost with some worship?"

"I'm sorry, Alice. Your Friend was the only one I had. The others are long gone," you hear some pain in his voice.

"Well what about some of your cult people? Could they come along with us to this battle? Or can they help guard everyone?"

"I'm not sure they would be much use, but they will be at the site for the decision. For the fight."

"So should we all start praying?" you ask. "I mean, my family."

"They can pray if it makes them feel better," Michael says. "Sometimes people find religion comforting."

"I mean to you, goofus," you retort.

"Oh. I don't think your family would have the sincerity necessary to make a difference. Simply knowing that I'm real is different than believing or worshiping me. It would be too risky, I'd be afraid they might attract Rot's attention again."

You glower at the wall while holding the phone. "So, what can we do? Are we going to be safe?"

"I will protect you," Michael says, "And your family and your friends. The whole town of Roselake if you want."

"I do," you say. "No one else needs to die, not so close to the end. The people we've lost have been too much."

Michael is silent a moment. "I will try. I will sincerely try, Alice, but if it means putting you in danger-"

"Don't worry about that," you blurt. "I'll watch myself. You have to watch them."

"Alice," Michael says, his voice hard and stern, almost angry, a side you haven't seen much of before. "Everything I've done here has been-" he stops for a beat, relaxing. "I will try to protect the town. I will do all I can. I promise you."

"Is there anything I can do to help you?" you ask. "Wait . . . You're not going to asks me to worship you are you?"

"No," Michael says, amused, "Though I appreciate the offer."

"That was not an offer."

"Even so. Please just stay save until Halloween. I want to see this thing to the end with you."

You see Sam give you a look like 'Did he really?'

"Are you going to be stretched too thin protecting the town?" you think of your Friend, "I don't want to . . . Make things harder."

"I used to dominate Western Europe. I can manage Roselake for a few nights."

"So . . . How is it you were able to drive off Rot? I thought you were worried about how strong he is."

"What you've seen," Michael says, "Is merely a shadow. Rot is still locked away . . . Mostly. When he comes free, then I will be worried."

You don't like Michael's tone there, it sounds just a little too serious for your preferences. "We'll handle it," you say.

"Do you think I should tell more people about this?" You ask. "Is that a bad idea?"

"Yes. I think so. The fewer who know the better. I know you mean well and are trying to protect your families but . . . If things go badly here, there is nowhere to run to."

You look at Sam in spite of yourself.

She looks steeled. Resolved. Determined, but still afraid.

"I know I've been asking a lot for you," you say, feeling a pang of guilt "and it's . . . Certainly not fair but . . . Thank you."

"I would always help you, Alice. You shouldn't be worried about me. I'm not doing this to bribe you. You can . . . Live your life as you see fit after this is through. Rest assured." The pain in his voice is unmistakable and you can't help but think he's being sincere.

"Thank you." you repeat.

"Get some rest, Alice. And Sam. I'll be here if you need me."

"Goodnight!" Sam calls.

"Goodnight."

"Night." You hang up with Michael and lay the phone down on your night stand. By Sam's request, you'll share a bed tonight, sleeping back to back with her between you and the wall. Being alone didn't appeal to her.

You let her climb in first before climbing in after her, pulling the covers over both of you and turning out the light.

"He likes you a lot," Sam says. "I bet that's weird."

"It is."

"You have a boyfriend though."

You nod.
"Does he know? Zack?" Sam asks.

"I haven't told him," you say, dreading how your gung ho and impulsive boyfriend might react.

"I bet that would be weird too. Do you think Zack would be jealous?"

You struggle for an answer, "I don't think he'd be happy, but I don't know what he would think."

There's a few minutes of silence, so long that you are half asleep when she speaks again.

"I'm sorry about this," she says. "I mean, imposing."

"You're not imposing," you say. "I like you around. We're friends."

"I was trying to help," Sam says, "I didn't mean for this to get worse."

"It's not worse. Really, everything is under control. I was just worried about you."

Sam doesn't answer.

You feel her shudder and realize she's crying again.

"I fucked up," she says.

"You didn't-"

"I fucked up!" She sobs. "I fucked up this. I fucked up you and Franz! I fucked up your life!"

You're so stunned that you can't reply, you can only sit and feel Sam's back on yours as she's wracked with sadness.

She takes a shaky breath, "I never meant for this. I just . . . Didn't think. I didn't think about anyone but myself. When you came up to me that first time, I thought you were going to hurt me or something. I thought you came for revenge and when you didn't . . . I realized what I was. What I must look like to you." She sniffs. "I just wanted to help you with Rot, I wanted to do something good for you for a change."

Wait, what? Are we inferring that Franz probably cheated on her? What? Why are we doing that after this big emotional moment?
>>
>>2687791
Franz and Sam are not a couple
We are assuming Franz wasn't mature enough to hold his relationship with Alice
>>
>>2687791
I am interpreting this to mean "Franz would have cheated on ALICE sooner or later."
>>
>>2687795
>>2687796
AHH, okay. That makes sense. Sorry.
>>
>>2687802
No worries! Clarity is good.
>>
>>2687796
Exactly what I meant.

You turn around in the bed so you're spooning Sam and put your arms around her shoulders. You're almost surprised that she instinctively pushes back against you so you're holding her tight.

"You're a good person, Sam," you say, whispering directly into her ear.

She doesn't say anything.

"You wanted to do something good?" you ask.

She nods.

"You already have, Sam. You became my friend. You helped me get over my fear of getting close to people again." You pause and collect your thoughts. "You listened and tried to help me even when I told you what I was. You're the best friend I've ever known, and I'm glad I decided to talk to you that day."

Sam puts her hands over yours which are clasped over her chest.

"We all make mistakes," you continued "And I've never held the past against you. You shouldn't either."

"Besides which, it takes two to tango. Franz isn't innocent here. Though, let's be real, what happened . . . Probably would have happened sooner or later. It was best in the long run."

Sam snorts. "You are a god I think."

"What?" you aren't sure you heard her clearly.

"I said you must already be a god already," she replies, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "To do what you do and say what you say. I mean . . . Any other girl . . ." she shakes her head. "It doesn't matter. You're kinder than I deserve. Kinder than anyone deserves."

You think about the rush and pleasure you'd felt when you'd taken Cliff's life. "That's not true."

"I think it is." Sam says. "Michael is sweet but . . . You're a better person than any of them."

"I'm just more human," you say, unable to hide your disappointment, though you're not sure if that's with their kind or yours.

"Don't let that change, okay?"

"I won't." You rest your cheek on the back of her head and feel her chest rising and falling with her breath as they slow and even out and she drifts to sleep.

You dream of a warm beach lit by no sun. A dark expanse of white sand and a technicolor spectrum of stars above to light it. The stars, so numerous and so impossibly bright they look like a streak of sand grains across a black plain.

You watch the waves crash across the smooth sand, a murmuring call and response that continues unbroken for as long as you stand and listen. As each wave crests, there is a flash of bioluminescent green that mirrors the barely visible emerald tint of the ocean itself.

Distantly, you hear the rumble of a thunderstorm, far out to sea and can just barely make out periodic flashes of lighting on the horizon. The air smells of a mixture of salt water and a heavy, plant odor. The smell of thick foliage. A glance behind you shows you the dense jungle that butts against the beach. Black, foreboding, but restful somehow. Inter-spaced with broad waxy leaves are trumpet shaped flowers in ghostly pastel colors and the rhythmic chirping of night insects.

You take a few paces down the beach, admiring the waves as the crash in and wondering at the beauty of the sky. You sit on the sand and savor the warmth it radiates into you, the perfect opposition to the cool air, just as the crash of waves opposes the restful hum of the jungle or the white sand counters the black sky. A tranquil world of opposition.

You lay down in the sand staring up at the sky, the waves barely reaching up to the bottoms of your feet.

A steady breeze washes across your body before letting up a bit, replaced by a distant peel of thunder. You can't help but feel like this dream is familiar to you, despite how alien it is.

You don't close your eyes, but instead study constellations you don't recognize in the sky.

It's not just a dream. It clicks for you. This is the type of constructed dream you used to have when you first saw Goatman. You're too lucid, too clear. Did Baphomet give you this dream? For what purpose? It couldn't be your Friend, and it wasn't the type of thing Rot would do.

I'm going to stop here for the night. This is a good place to pick up next time. We're narrowing in on the conclusion here so I appreciate everyone tuning in. Next week I have a different quest, so week after next, we may just finish this thing. Thanks for playing guys!

I'm here for questions comments etc. Let's also take a moment and appreciate Friend.

Thank you for running, TK

Thanks for playing! I had a blast.

Night boss! Unfortunately, the only questions I have to ask is if you saw Creepshow yet and what else did you see lately.
>>
>>2687924
>Creepshow
Agh! No. I have a list of movies a mile wide to get through. It's literally on the list though.

>See
I watched Heat for the first time. Really liked it. Then I watched 300 Miles from Graceland with Kevin Costner and Kurt Russel and it was . . . not great. But I enjoyed it in a bad way.

Don't worry, pretty sure you'll get to it when you want to. In fact, maybe I've been going on about it too much...

Anyway, I recently got a copy of Flash Gordon, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It's like all of the seventies made one last attempt to prolong it's rule into the eighties. Had a lot of fun with my friends imitating Prince Voltan and singing songs from Fiddler on the Roof whenever Dr. Zarkov appeared. I've have yet to watch Robot Jox, where it's 50 years after a nuclear holocaust, and war between the Not!United States and the Not!Soviet Union has been phased out for giant mechs fighting each other to the death. Wish me luck.

>Don't worry
Nah man, I definitely want to watch it, I'm frustrated cause I keep forgetting. I'm gonna try to remember to watch it this weekend, but I have no qualms about being reminded :D

>Flash Gordon
Good stuff! The un-avoidable Riff-Raff crotch bulge is a bit distracting though. I won't like, the Zarkov memory wipe made me feel emotions.

>Robot Jox
Another fun one! Not my favorite though, it's not bad enough to be funny or good enough to be amazing. Turns out kind of so-so
