You are Matsumoto Rangiku, a shinigami currently serving as Lieutenant of the Ninth Division. If you had your choice you'd much rather be the type of leader who avoids fights rather than the type who starts them... as hard-headed as your mother and Captain can be when she's angry, most people would probably be surprised to hear you learned that from her. Victory is victory regardless of whether you had to draw your sword or not to achieve it, and so long as your opponent stops attacking you it can be considered a victory.

Wonderweiss isn't the kind of enemy who you can stop with words alone. His worldview has no room in it for negotiation, and defeat in any capacity is the same as death. All because he had to pick Kaname Tōsen as the man whose words and ideals he'd cling to.

The fight's gone well enough so far, and you and Bambietta seem to have the situation mostly under control. But you're also aware that Wonderweiss hasn't used what you suspect is his resurreccion's specialty: sound waves. And you know by Bambi's responses that her bombs shouldn't explode against a pressure wave... which makes sense, seeing as they move fast enough to begin with that pressure sensitivity would mean they'd basically blow up in her face. No, there has to be some sort of a solid object for them to contact with before they detonate.

That leaves her as the natural choice for attacking the Espada, and you as the natural choice for defending against his attacks using Haineko's Bankai.

“Bambi!” you shout before taking a swing at Wonderweiss that stops after biting into his enhanced hierro. You draw in a little bit of ash and take a step back, leveraging your reconstructed blade against the Espada's arm to push away safely before taking a second swing upwards from your right hip.

The edge meets his arm, and you manage to push his punch up and past your right shoulder only for him to swing his arm back and basically throw you clear.

“Cero!”

“Dankū!”

Your hasty bakudō shatters under the weight of the Primera's cero, but not before it buys you just enough time to recover and dash clear.

By now, Bambietta's started to draw on her own power and prepare an assault of her own.

“Vollständig... I'd hoped not to have to use this again,” she frowns.

You give her a nod, and by the look on his face Wonderweiss has only now remembered she was there.

At this point, you think you can see a little smirk on Wonderweiss' face. It's as if he's wondering what good Bambietta can do with one arm.

He's about to find out the hard way.

Vollständig!

A cross-shaped explosion of reiatsu envelops Bambietta's body, drawing obvious stares from a few of the remaining Sternritter before the reiatsu dissipates. When it does she's sprouted a pair of glowing reishi wings and a star-shaped light behind her head, like a halo or a nimbus. And you can tell by her reiatsu that the loss of an arm won't slow her down in the slightest.

“Fall!” she shouts, releasing a hail of bomblets with a powerful flap of her wings. The resulting explosions not only demolish several buildings around where Wonderweiss is standing, they pulverize the shattered steel and concrete before it even has a chance to collapse to the ground.

But Wonderweiss isn't going to take this lying down.

“For justice!” he roars back, far louder than any voice should be capable of. The shockwaves from his shout blast the crumbled concrete and throw the rain of steel outwards shattering windows and bringing down structural beams in nearby buildings that until this point had managed to survive relatively unscathed.

But this is what you were waiting for, what you were scattering the silvery ashes of your blade for. And you're more than ready to take advantage of this development.

“Enkōsen!”

Hundreds of glowing reiatsu shields emerge in a hemisphere around the Espada, shattering under the force of his shout... but easily breaking up the soundwaves before they can reach any other fighters on the battlefield. They even reflect some of the sound waves back inwards, buffeting Wonderweiss with the remnants of his own attack.

Fuck your 'justice'!” Bambi shouts back, unleashing another barrage of bombs. This time Wonderweiss can't evade them all, taking a blast to his side that sends him hurtling to the ground where he leaves a deep impact crater veiled by a massive cloud of dust and debris.

>Lure him into attacking blindly through the debris cloud, take advantage of that.

You disperse Haineko's ashes, deciding to make full use of your Bankai. A very convincing likeness of yourself appears, dashing into the cloud with its sword raised. But instead of taking the bait, Wonderweiss unleashes a wordless scream that blasts both the cloud and your clone away, dispersing them on the wind and revealing himself once more.

A deep wound has opened up on his side where Bambi's bomb struck him, not so much cracking his ribs as pulverizing them.

“How durable are you!?” Bambietta demands, producing a reishi sword in her remaining hand.

“Enough,” Wonderweiss stares back up at her, dribbling blood from the corner of his mouth.

“Heh, jury's still out...” Bambietta begins before you charge in, surprising her. “Hey, what're you...”

You take a heavy blow to the stomach and tumble across the ground as you let Wonderweiss hit you, dispersing your blade like a wisp of trailing smoke as his fist makes contact. Of course, the wound Bambi left is your target... but you doubt Wonderweiss understands that.

“What a useless attack...” he begins, raising his arm to charge a cero and exposing his ribs.

You cough up spit and a little bit of blood, your head swimming... but that's not enough.

“You should have gone for my head!” you hiss, raising your own hand in response. “Tenran!”

The hadō isn't so much a directed vortex as it is an outward burst, forcing his wound open and digging into his torso at the same time as the kidō explodes from a spot just inside where his ribcage should normally be...

… and then he loses control of his cero on top of that.

The powerful blast loses coherence and washes over both of you, but mostly over him. He disappears in its purple reiatsu, which momentarily blinds you. Even Bambietta has her arms raised over her face when you can see again.

Wonderweiss stands with one arm raised over his own face, terrible burns from hand to elbow and all over his now-bare chest. His uniform hangs in tatters, and his charred left arm hangs uselessly at his side. It honestly reminds you a little of when Riku nearly burned her own arm off years ago mastering a kaizō bakudō technique using Kuyō Shibari as a base.

That has to hurt.

“You...” he growls, body still steaming from the heat. “The two of you...”

“Do you even realize who you're fighting for?” you ask, drawing a blank stare from Wonderweiss. “You're fighting for the man who used Tōsen's anger, who twisted his ideal of justice to suit his own ends. And now he's using you too... do you even know why he betrayed the Soul Society? Has he ever told you? Have you ever thought to ask?”

“Because the shinigami are evil!” he spits at you. “Tōsen said so himself! Aizen says it too! What they can't kill they just enslave, they did it to the Quincy and they're doing it to us arrancar now too!”

With a wordless cry he attacks... but he only makes it a single step forward.

It's a lot more brutal than you remember it being, now that you're able to see what it is that you've done. An upward swing using the same principle as Senmaioroshi, probably the most infamous multiple-strike zanjutsu known among practitioners at Lieutenant level or higher. Few seated officers outside the Ninth and Eleventh Divisions know how to perform it. You really aren't a fan, preferring more powerful blows delivered one at a time, but delivered through the ash of Haineko's blade it's too effective to turn your nose up at.

From the soles of his feet up to about his ankles, Wonderweiss' feet evaporate into a fine mist of blood and bone. His eyes widen as he falls, still unaware of the attack you launched from underfoot, and you only just manage to halt your blade before the rest of his body falls into the grinder.

Gods, you used to think of this as being like that game you played with Gin as kids, 'the floor is lava'... you're a little sorry you ever thought of it so flippantly.

“My... my feet?” he wonders aloud staring at the bloody stumps. “Where are my feet?”

“I cut them off,” you explain. “I'll say it again, Wonderweiss: this fight is over. I don't want to kill you if I don't have to.”

He forces himself to his knees. “Shut up.”

“Most arrancar sacrifice high-speed regeneration to improve their hierro,” you observe. “So unless...”

And of course he can regenerate.

His feet grow back almost instantly, though not what you'd call 'correctly'... they make his withered, wraith-like arms look normal by comparison. These new appendages look more like gnarled roots than anything you'd see on a human. Even the wound on his side from earlier writhes as though the flesh there has gained a mind of its own as it knits itself back together.

>Tsuzuri Raiden, turn the ground and the ash around him into a bug zapper.

“Shunkō.”

With a powerful burst of reiatsu you attack headlong into the Primera's charge, your thrust meeting the tips of his clawed fingers. But that's not all there is to his attack... he also screams, the blast slowing your momentum and threatening to shake your very body apart as he directs all the power his voice can muster straight at you in a tightly-confined cone of sound.

Until it actually does just that.

Your clone shimmers and dissipates even as the real 'you' thrusts your sword into his rapidly-mending ribs. His momentum carries him forward, pulling your blade through his own body with such force that it threatens to rip the hilt out of your grasp until you release the compressed ashes that make up the 'sword' in your hands.

“Rend, Haineko.”

The ashes rip out through Wonderweiss' back in several places, though it hardly betrays what must have just happened on the inside. Like a bomb blowing out the windows of a building Haineko tends to follow the path of least resistance when left to her own devices, regardless of what kind of soft tissue that happens to be.

The Primera collapses to the ground... you're not even sure there's enough blood left in his body for him to 'bleed' per se.

“Sorry,” you apologize, taking a moment to collect the ashes.

“Too late for that...” Wonderweiss coughs with what little is left of his lungs.

“No, not you,” you reply. “I'm apologizing to my Captain. I wanted to follow her example and spare our enemies whenever I could... she and Yoruichi hate the thought of being judge, jury, and executioner even on the battlefield. But they're stronger than I am. They can afford to be patient.”

“I can't. Not from here on. And that's why I'm apologizing.”

“Well, seems like we have a problem here,” Askin sighs as he watches the Primera Espada collapse facefirst in a pool of his own viscera. “They're a lot better than we were told.”

“It doesn't matter how good they are,” Gerard replies gruffly. “The loss of the Espada was accounted for in our orders.”

“Aint that a little cold?”

Gerard shakes his head. “Hardly. Trash like that can hardly be counted on in the first place, wouldn't you agree?”

“Welp, you got me there,” Askin admits. “Though I was being serious, they're working together a lot better than Aizen gave them credit for.”

“Again, it doesn't matter.”

“Aw, that ain't fair!”

Both Sternritters glance at the newcomer: Ichimaru Gin, wearing a broad smile across his face. A smile so obviously disingenuous that his expression may as well have been blank for all the good it did in displaying his actual thoughts or motivations.

“And here we put a lotta effort into planning all this for you!” Gin continues. “Least you could do is acknowledge that, you are the 'guests' in this scenario after all. Whatever happened to manners?”

“Aaah, what a display of tactical skill and coordination!” Askin replies with overblown astonishment. “Didja see it, Gerard ol' buddy ol' boy? Didja see how they did that? Shinigami an' arrancar an' quincy all workin' together like that? Hot damn am I ever impressed!”

“See, was that so hard?” Ichimaru's smile widens.

“Nearly killed me,” Askin stares back. “I'd roll my eyes, but to do it hard enough I'd need an extra damn dimension just to roll 'em through.”

“The powers you quincy are showing so far I wouldn't be shocked if you could actually do that.”

“I know, right? Whatever happened to the normal stuff, like bows and ransōtengai and hirenkyaku?”

Ichimaru shrugs and sighs. “You had a talking hand for cryin' out loud. Isn't it weird that he was so convinced he was a quincy?”

“Fair point,” Askin admits, glancing at Gerard. “Hey Gerard, isn't that weird?”

You are Ichimaru Gin, Captain of the Third Division and highly-trained snake. You never did know what these two were capable of, unlike many of the weaker arrancar and even many of the more manageable Sternritter the fighters who had been in the former king's upper echelon of fighters are much more tight-lipped. You suspect that they're each quite powerful on their own, along with that dark-skinned man in the shady hat that the Head Captain dragged off into the Dangai. They may even be stronger than you are.

But as Gerard is fond of saying that hardly matters. Even if they are stronger than you you'll just have to find a way.

Being at a disadvantage never stopped your mother from cutting down her enemies, after all. You wonder how much you really take after her at the end of the day.

“Am I to take it from that look on your face that you want to fight me?” you ask Gerard, who glares at you menacingly.

“Ah, scary!” you mock him. “How will I ever survive?”

How will you survive?

“Hey, miss Halibel!” you call out, deciding to give Rangiku and Bambietta a chance to rest and recover in case Askin decides to take his turn early. “Care to give me a hand here?”

“Asking for help already?” Gerard asks, cocking an eyebrow. “What a coward you turned out to be, Ichimaru.”

“You and I both know how this would go if I tried to fight you alone,” you reply calmly. “You'd insist that 'IT'S NOT FAIR TO FIGHT ME ONE ON ONE', and that if we wanted to have any hope of survival we should 'ALL ATTACK AT ONCE'!”

“Are you mocking me?” Gerard demands.

“No,” Askin chimes in, “he's mimicking you. And pretty well, too.”

“Please stop encouraging him.”

Halibel joins you with the faint sound of a sonido. “Captain Ichimaru.”

“Miss Halibel,” you nod in welcome. “It should go without saying, but the typical shinigami way of doing things where we start off easy and work our way up? That's not how this is going to have to work.”

“I have nowhere else to go to improve,” Halibel admits, gesturing to her now-twice transformed body. “I assume you know nothing of his abilities?”

“Was that an accusation?”

“Possibly a little.”

“All I know is that he's one of their strongest,” you admit. “I did hear some rumor to the tune that he's got some sort of similar story to Pernida. You know, the giant hand.”

You wiggle your fingers for emphasis.

You have something approaching a 'plan' in mind right from the start: get in close and stab him.

But it's more complicated than that of course, at least the deisionmaking behind it is. You know that while he has some ranged abilities, as all quincy do, Gerard's skills are primarily at melee, same as yours. While you and Halibel could keep your distance you're aware that the further you are from your victim the greater chance of missing. And Gerard is on the short list of people you suspect could actually dodge Kamishini no Yari if given half the chance.

So the result is that you have to compromise. What has to happen is that Halibel should stay at range, using Tiburon and her cero to constrain Gerard's movements and give you cover if you ever need to withdraw, and you have to get closer. Close enough that when you extend Kamishini no Yari you're certain to hit.

“Are you familiar with what my Bankai does?” you ask Gerard. “I'm fairly positive I've never actually explained it to any of you.”

“No,” Askin informs you. “As talkative as you are you rarely say anything.”

“Well, today's your lucky day!” you reply. “My shikai can extend to one hundred times its length, which is why my old nickname in Captain Hirako's Division was the 'Hundred-Sword Kid'.”

“Interesting but irrelevant,” Gerard insists.

“Then I'll tell you something relevant,” you reply with a grin. “One of the rules which governs all zanpakuto is that Shikai and Bankai never have abilities that are unrelated, no matter how hard it may be on the face to see the unifying feature it is always true. So how long do you think my Bankai can extend?”

“A thousand sword-lengths?” Gerard asks.

“Good guess,” you admit. “Bankai: Kamishini no Yari.”

With a simple swing, you slice half of what's left of Karakura town in half.

“My Bankai can extend to a maximum length of thirteen kilometers.”

For the first time since you met the man, Askin Nakk le Vaar actually seems visibly shocked by something. You can tell he's doing the math in his head, calculating the immense speeds at which your sword has to change size in order to do what you just showed him. In half a second it extended thirteen kilometers and then returned, meaning that on the initial expansion your tip's velocity reaches a little over 116,000 miles per hour.

The space shuttle's maximum re-entry velocity is less than 18,000 miles per hour, or so you've heard somewhere. For most people, dodging that at any range less than across town would be impossible. Death would be certain.

Even Gerard seems somewhat impressed.

“Quite the sword you have there,” he acknowledges you. “Let's see how it fares against mine!”

You sweep Kamishini no Yari towards him, trying to convince him that you do so because it's difficult to aim with pinpoint accuracy. It's not of course, if he stood still you could put out both his eyes and carve a smile onto his massive chin from here in less time than it would take the average man to blink. But he doesn't have to know that yet, and in fact the less he knows the better surprise it will make later.

He parries your edge with his own broad sword, somewhat short for his stature just like yours is, only for Halibel to join in.

“La Gota.”

A massive lance of compressed water careens through the space Gerard and your respective swords occupied a moment ago, and in an instant you bring down your sword against Gerard when his hirenkyaku ends.

“Your reactions are excellent and your arm is strong!” you compliment him.

“And you would never compliment an opponent unless you had some wicked plan in mind!” he counters, parring a second strike from Kamishini no Yari and charging you with another hirenkyaku.

This time a wide yellow cero sweeps down in front of you and forces Gerard to break off his attack... at least from the front. A second step puts him behind you... all to predictable, you're afraid.

“Gotcha!” you smirk, already aiming Kamishini no Yari around your side when Gerard does exactly what you expected him to do. You can feel him parry the rapidly extending blade, then he breaks off.

He means to attack Halibel?

Halibel fires a La Gota down at Gerard who expertly dodges it, only to find her actual blade sweeping at his side as the arrancar pivots just as expertly out of a sonido.

The Sternritter leans back to avoid the edge and sweeps his sword upward as Halibel rolls, bringing the two tails trailing behind her back around to lash the man's blade away while her back is turned.

“Bala!”

There's an explosion as his fist meets the blast, which hides Halibel's escape as she disengages from the so-far fruitless exchange.

Before he can pursue, you intervene with Kamishini no Yari.

“Whoa, now!” you insist. “You can't just go chasing after a lady like that. It's rude.”

As Gerard is opening his mouth to retort, Halibel very nearly fires another La Gota down his throat.

“I'm sorry,” she apologizes. “You were about to say something?”

“You two seem afraid to get too close,” he observes. “Any particular reason, or are you just that intimidated by my obvious superiority?”

With a single step you suddenly close the distance, your plan having finally gone into motion. All this time you've been keeping your distance, fighting the opposite way from how you'd intended to take Gerard on, and so now it comes as a surprise.

“What's wrong” you ask, almost casually swinging Kamishini no Yari using what the old books often call 'short-sword chopping'. Not the deep, severing slashes of a full-length sword but short, powerful blows intended to hack and mangle limbs.

“This is what you wanted, isn't it?” you press, never once letting up on your assault or falling into a pattern.

Finally you make it a point to aim as if to thrust, and as you suspected Gerard senses the danger and sidesteps... directly into the spot where you wanted him.

“Ōkasen!” you declare, firing a sharp arc of kidō from the edge of your zanpakuto which forces Gerard to parry with his own sword, essentially breaking your hadō by brute force...

… and in doing so he lingers just a little too long.

A La Gota hits him squarely between the shoulders, sending him crashing to the ground. His body demolishes a four-floor parking garage, smashing through one concrete slab after another until the whole thing falls in over top of him.

“Man, those things are scary,” you realize the sheer force behind even the smallest and simplest technique in Halibel's arsenal. To think, Cascada is even stronger than that... it must be a simply tremendous amount of force considering the amount of moving water and the speeds it can hit.

Even that single shot wiped out nearly half a city block.

“He'll get up from that,” Halibel asserts. “I assume you have a plan?”

“I do,” you reply with a sagely nod.

“And that would be?” she asks. “How do you envision this ending?”

“Yes, I'd be interested to hear that myself,” a soaking-wet Gerard adds.

“Simple,” you reply with a calm smile, turning to point one long finger at Gerard's chest. “With a hole through your heart.”

Is it just me, or has there been more attention this last "arc" on how powerful Riku is? Seeing from the perspective of the quincy that viewed her as some unkillable freak of nature, Rukia explaining just how much of a monster she is, demolishing the basket quincy and freaking Grimmjow the fuck out, Ichigo describing her as almost teleporting around... It seems that there's an unusual amount of focus on it. Maybe this is just a side effect of hitting 8 tails, but I also feel like something is being hinted at here...
>>
>>2699221
And were that the case, what would such a thing be?

As I recall, the power boost from the jump from 8 tails to 9 tails is supposed to be vastly greater then from 1 tail to 8.

I don’t remember, when did Riku hit 8 tails again?
>>
>>2700920
the real question is when Riku will get her final 9th tail. If I remember, Queen said that Riku's original growth curve is gaining a new tail for every 100 lunar/solar years for each aspect of Riku (Riku,Tenkotsuki, and Rosa) has lived since Riku's creation/conception. It was originally slower when it was just Riku and Tenkotsuki (Rosa's lifespan didn't count since she was a hollow power/mask) with about an equivalent of 6 tails around the year 1944, but the process of turning Rosa into a second sword greatly accelerated the power curve.
>>

I wonder how much of a disaster would Riku cause if she really lets herself go in restraint (as in kicking the rules to the curb and going all out in combat no holds barred) after getting her final tail?
>>
>>2702155
I don't think it'd be all that different than it is now, she's already pretty terrifying - raw power isn't the concern. Although there could be some secondary effect to the ninth tail I suppose, merging has been hinted at occurring in the future but not what would cause it so that could be part of it
Really I think the most damaging from that list is the Ura Hado. If she learned all the ways then went around wrecking deities' respective shops that'd be a MUCH bigger disaster. Although there's a non-zero chance that whoever Artemis orchestrated the whole fucked up death-rebirth shitshow that resulted in Riku's being was aiming for that exact outcome
>>
>>2702155
Depending on the story a kitsune can be capable of possession, manifesting in dreams, elaborate illusions, reality warping, inflicting insanity, and extreme acts of shapeshifting like turning into landforms or celestial objects. And that's in addition to the supernatural abilities Riku already knows through training, like invisibility, flight, and creating fire and lightning.

Then imagine this being is also an expert in swordplay and fistfighting. There's a damn good reason the Royal Guard has been varying degrees of concerned about this, because while neither they nor you know yet what the ninth tail does there's every reason to believe that it's going to take a special kind of monster to even slow Riku down by the end of all this.
>>
>>2703625
basically Riku could become a reality bender.
Though I don't see her doing much other than maybe making a pocket dimension for some privacy and just going about her life as a captain as if nothing has changed.

>>
>>2707996
It's less about "liking", more about familiarity and personal boundaries. Think of it as being similar to a massage: with Yoruichi it can just be a "you're sore, lemme fix that" nicety, or it can be foreplay. "Everyone else" on the other hand is mostly about not being close enough for any significant physical contact to be acceptable.

Lisa however is a corner case where she and Riku would both know that she's a fellow "appreciator of the female form". So while Riku and Lisa get on better than any of the other vizards, they both know Lisa'd be a little too into it.
>>
>>2703625
Is genderbending yourself on the list? I mean Look at Riku's divine mom Inari. She split herself in two and genderbent one half just so she could have sex. And have Tenkotsuki.
>>
>>2710550
It's actually, to the best of my knowledge, never happened in Japanese mythology. Male kitsune always disguised themselves as men, females as women. And Inari never "had a daughter" in the sense that mortals mean, because Tamamo no Mae is also "Inari".

So I'd say that while it's entirely possible it's without precedent, and would make Riku/Tenkosuki a total weirdo. And lest we forget, Shinto deities have been murdered for being "too weird" and accidentally offending one another.
>>

Every fortnight for at least the last century, the Lieutenants of the Gotei 13 have held official meetings. These officers are among the few who regularly meet with members of Divisions not their own, owing in part to the vast amounts of distance between the headquarters of even those Divisions whose grounds are adjacent.

These meetings are, as a rule, exceedingly dull.

Eleventh Division's Lieutenant often doesn't even bother turning up, though she sometimes sends one of the other seated officers in her place: today it's Ayasegawa. Formalities are observed, food and tea are brought in (usually by the cooks of the First Division, on whose grounds the meetings are held), and empty pleasantries are exchanged. The business at hand is normally the operations of the various Divisions: who has sustained some losses in the last two weeks, whose operations may be encroaching onto whose 'territory', who may have made some promises to whom regarding non-combat work, and so forth.

The only part of the meetings which manages to routinely be even the slightest bit interesting is when Lieutenant Matsumoto of the Ninth Division inevitably has to hound one of her peers over a late submission to the Seireitei's regular magazine.

“But you promised!” she pouts at Lieutenant Kuchiki, who seems to be taken completely off his guard by the twinkle of tears in the corners of her eyes. “We're really counting on you here, Sōjun!”

“Well... I guess I can get it to you by tomorrow morning if it's that...” he begins, only to be interrupted by a complete swing in Rangiku's mood.

“Thank you so much!” she tells him cheerfully. “You just finish it up as quick as you can and we'll handle the rest, okay?”

“Yeah!” Sōjun replies, still somewhat stunned by the whole situation. “Sasakibe, are we finished here? I'd like to get this wrapped up as soon as possible.”

Lieutenant Sasakibe nods. “Yes, Lieutenant Kuchiki. I believe there is nothing of any substance left to review.”

Thus excused, Kuchiki immediately leaves to return to his family manor. Rangiku wipes the tears from her eyes, her expression having returned to normal.

“A woman's tears should never be used as a weapon,” Sasakibe insists sternly.

The older Lieutenant of the Third Division, Iba, scoffs lightly as she produces a long stem pipe. “Nonsense, Chōjirō. For some women they're the only weapon available.”

“If he didn't want to be guilted,” Rangiku sighs dismissively, “then he could simply have done the work he promised to do, Sasakibe.”

“Well, that was boring,” a voice greets Rangiku after she too has left the room.

She leans over the railing, looking out on the pristine city that extends as far as her eyes can see. “Is it ever not boring? You'd think being able to see officers from the other Divisions would be something to look forward to, but it's just a few hours where we have to listen to how all the same boring things that happen in our own Divisions happen everywhere.”

“Well, it is nice getting to see people,” Gin admits. “You know. People we'd like to see more often.”

“I suppose there's an appeal,” Rangiku admits with a smile and a sigh. “At least when those other people see it the same way.”

After a few seconds Ichimaru sighs dramatically. “Tell you what, let's go get something to eat. All this boring talk has gotten me hungry.”

“What, like a date?” Rangiku replies, cocking an eyebrow.

“Nothing like that!” Ichimaru insists. “There's nothing so unbelievable about two colleagues sharing a meal together, is there?”

“I guess not,” Rangiku shrugs. “Alright, where did you have in mind?”

“There's a place I've been meaning to try,” he replies, gesturing for Rangiku to follow him. “It's not too far from here. It's supposed to be quite good.”

It takes twenty minutes to get to the restaurant Gin has in mind, only for Rangiku to stop dead in the entrance. This is a much nicer place than she anticipated. “Are you sure about this? It seems like the sort of place where you'd need a reservation.”

“Well, you never know until you ask,” Gin observes, flagging down a man in uniform who seems like a waiter. “Excuse me, but might there be a table available for two?”

“Of course, sir,” the waiter replies immediately. “There's a private table upstairs that's free, if you'd like that.”

“Well, it seems we're in luck,” Rangiku replies, throwing Gin a suspicious look before a second waiter arrives to guide the two upstairs. As he passes the first waiter Gin frantically draws his finger across his throat, and the waiter offers a quick and silent nod of acknowledgement.

Gin and Rangiku each make a few separate orders, which amount to a plate of Cantonese-style fried rice, sweet potato with caramelized sugar, braised spare ribs, and steamed scallops with a variety of vegetables. While definitely good, especially when served alongside two cold beers, there's something... lacking.

“It's good,” Gin admits. “But there's somethin' about it.”

“It's because it's not Yoruichi's cooking,” Rangiku realizes. “She always spices things a little stronger than they probably should.”

“And she adds flower peppers to things too,” Gin agrees. “Guess I got used to that before... you know.”

“Leaving for Fifth Division?” Rangiku sighs. “Don't tell anyone about this, unless you want a couple of Captains nagging you about your eating.”

Gin shudders. “Could definitely do without that.”

“Still, for a restaurant it's not half bad,” Rangiku admits. “Too bad they only serve beer, I could go for something a bit stronger.”

“Funny thing, that,” Gin replies with a sly smile. “It just so happens that there's a place I've wanted to try for a while... a nice bar.”

“Funny thing,” Rangiku agrees. “What are the chances of that... so are you sure this isn't a date?”

“What, can't two coworkers go out for a well-deserved round of after-dinner drinks without it being about sex?” Gin protests his innocence.

“... in theory,” Rangiku admits. “Whatever. Let's find this bar of yours then.”

The bar isn't far from the restaurant that Gin picked, and is similarly far nicer than the usual hangouts Rangiku has gotten used to. The drinks on offer are mostly sake and shochū, but there are also a few different whiskies available and the house's own specialty umeshū. Rangiku and Gin both start with the umeshū, a light, fruity, and slightly syrupy glass of golden liquor served over ice. But from that point Rangiku escalates... first to a bottle of sake, then to a pair of whiskies back to back. Finally she returns to an umeshū, something light and refreshing to leave off on.

Unfortunately by this point she's quite drunk, where Gin has held back and avoided the same outcome.

“Giiiin~” Rangiku slurs cheerfully. “You picked a good one, ya know.”

“Yeah, happy to hear it,” Gin replies carefully, somewhat taken aback at Rangiku's state.

“Sly move, getting me drunk like this,” she presses, leaning against her fellow Lieutenant's shoulder.

Gin's expression shifts ever so slightly, and his voice betrays his mind even more subtly. “I... think we need to get you home, Rangiku.”

Rangiku glances up with a sly smile. “Lieutenant Ichimaru, I do believe that you're blushing.”

“That happens when you drink,” Gin insists, regaining a little of his customary calm.

“You're a great liar,” Rangiku sighs, “but I've seen you do it too many times to fall for it, you know.”

“Either way, we do need to get you home,” Gin changes the subject. “Come along, Lieutenant.”

Gin escorts Rangiku quietly towards the Ninth Division's barracks, and she has to lean heavily on his shoulder to keep up with his shunpō... though for all intents and purposes he's actually carrying her. Eventually he manages to slip past the sentries by going over top of a wall, and finds his way into the heart of the grounds where the Commandos, Lieutenant, and Captain all live.

On the lower floor he leaves Rangiku on a couch in the meeting room, then goes to work laying out her futon and pillows. Thankfully they've been freshly laundered, and so Gin can carefully princess-carry her into her room and lay her down to sleep.

“Yer not gonna... undress...” she mumbles, losing coherence as her voice drops off.

Pausing for a moment, Gin takes a knee to give Rangiku a quick kiss on her forehead. “Not on the first date.”

Stepping outside, Gin finds himself abruptly confronted by a slight young woman with dark hair and a white sleeveless haori. “My, your senses are quite exceptional, miss...”

“Mirai,” the newcomer fills in the blank. “Would you mind telling me why you are sneaking through our grounds, Lieutenant Ichimaru?”

“Lieutenant Matsumoto had a little too much to drink I'm afraid,” Gin informs the commando, “so I wanted to sneak her back home to rest without causing a commotion. This Division should see her as a the... formidable woman she is, not passed out and thrown over a shoulder."

“And you did not plan to report to the Captain?” Mirai presses.

Gin simply shakes his head. “You're a clever woman, you and I both know that Captain Kusajishi already knows I'm here. If she had anything to say it'd be her confronting me, not you.”

After a moment's thought, Mirai seems to relax slightly. “Technically that is true.”

“Then do me one favor?”

“Depends on the favor.”

“See to it that Rangiku gets some uninterrupted rest,” Gin nods subtly. “Please.”

Mirai sighs. “Of course.”

“Thank you.”
