Hey /qst/, trying out a quickie, if it catches on might continue it this weekend.

In this quest, you will play the part of a professor at a university studying the secrets of the Necromantic Arts. Your goal is to find the secret to Immortality. There are three paths you can choose to take; The Path of Blood, the Path of Bone, and the Path of Spirit. Each path takes advantage of the inherent magical properties of their necrotic energies to unravel the secrets of life and death. Professors in one chosen path cannot learn, research, or collaborate with faculty from another path.

Spells are tiered by the nature of the caster and those casted upon.
> Tier 1 spells can only be casted upon a caster, and deals primarily with augmentation of the senses.
> Tier 2 spells expand the subject pool to the deceased, or remnants of them. For Blood and Bone Pathwalkers this includes corpses, for Spirit Pathwalkers this includes ghosts. These spellcasters can manipulate their material, either to create new forms, or be used to power T1 spells.
> Tier 3 allows casters to manipulate the living, but only limited to creatures of inferior intelligence.
> Tier 4 allows casters to manipulate the intelligent, sentient species. It is the most powerful form, and allows one to unlock the secrets to immortality

To unlock a spellcasting tier, one must research 3 spells from a lower tier. The Immortality Spell requires 4 Tier 4 spells to be learned.

In the academic environment, unfortunately, research is limited by funding. Therefore, only one professor will be allowed to conduct research on a spell until funding is expanded down the road. Proposals for research are granted by the university's favour to a professor. Favour can be increased by completing quests for the head of the university. These quests can be completed in teams and are completely optional. However, if a player chooses to complete a quest he forfeits his chance to submit a research proposal that turn. Players will compete for their research proposals by rolling 1d100. Ties will be broken by vote.

There's no limit on players, so if you want to join please submit:

>Sir Elric Nevermore
>Path of Blood
>research tier 1 spell

am i doing right?
>>
>>2704017
Yes almost there, the idea is to be specific in what spell you wanna research. What is the nature of the spell? For example, a T1 spell can be to increase your temp to get someone more fired up, or decrease temperature to calm someone down, etc.
>>
>>2704001
Ehh fuck it why not.

>Reginald mervon
>Path of Bone
>Propose a university name

I do so think, good chaps that this name needs some pazaz. Something that the new generation can get behind. subtle and refined, I would like to call this institute "The post mortality institute of Advanced learning."

since i am in Path of Blood which should focus on flesh, i study how the body function and how to manipulate it. Through ritual self-mutilation with blood-letting, i have been trying to override fundamental control over my blood. My first spell research is to improving the blood flow around eyes so that i can see better or even seeing the unseen

Why good sir, it is because we should inform our students what we wish to achive without causing undue stresses on the untuaght masses who may discover us. It is our goal, our principle, and uses words too big for commoners I do say a fine bit off logic, especially if we use an acronym.
>>
>>2704074

are you mad?
>>

Keeeeeeeee

And i must ask gentlemen, if we intend to share the knowledge of our craft's with one another, For if sir nevermore were to finish his liquid commanind hex, would we not be entitled to be taught the charm? I shall ask the head master.

>>2704079
It seems so
>>
>>2704076
Indeed, my friend, but I fear describing our institute as post-mortem, rather than our field of study, may only inspire confusion in prospective students. Unless you did mean that our school itself is undead in the literal sense?

Did the graduating class transmute one of our buildings to bone before leaving again?

>>2704074
>>2704079
Are... are you attempting to fleshcraft your face to mimic mine? That's quite a neat trick.

...And also quite terrifying. I'm going to have to ask you to leave my office, sir. If you're new here, and in need of directions, I may direct you to the informative notice posted over >>2704001.

Hello study buddy.
>>
>>2704095
>>2704094
who let his mimics out?
>>
>>2704094
Why my good sir, this was never an intent upon abbandoning my own path, merely expressing a professional opinion that all spells should be made avilable for cross study, even if we are incapable or unwilling of using it ourselves.

>>2704087
I do not believe so......But that does sound like a chipper idea, Good practice for the sports.

>>2704095

I see your research proposals gentlemen, thank you for the early submissions. While the deadline approaches, let me review the quests.

A fine name sir, just long enough to intimidate the lowborn, just subtle enough to attract the talented who happen to be faint of heart. I will submit this to the board!

> Reginald Mervon: +10 Favour (bonus applies when you propose research)

>>2704072
Eh, what's with the fur on your boots, don't tell me you're resurrecting cats already?...Ah, yes, the rat problem. Well, it certainly seems messy, but we appreciate the effort made. Just, remember to clean up next time you meet faculty, yes?

> Issac Helman: +10 Favour (bonus applies when you propose research)
>>
>>2704113
Why thank you head master, A fine thank you to you. Now gentlemen, I propose we have a rota.

When the research is done, may we begin an alternating system that encourages all three branches to flourish? I find that unless we had a specialised threat, say a spirit infestation, then we do not need to focus exclusively or the most on spirit magic, much the same for blood and bone.
>>
>>2704113
Thank you Headmaster I'll take care of their spirits, and the cats calm me down when I hear too many voices. So I wear them as gesture of gratitude.
>>
>>2704117
I have to voice out here, we should work together against threats but for the research should be free for it is personal.
>>
>>2704074
Ah excuse me sir? Did you have a submission as well?

Well then, fine, let me throw this in the review pile. I believe all the submissions are in order, I will let you gentlemen know what the Institute decides shortly...
>>
>>2704121
Ahh of course my dear nevermore, But as taboo as my next utterance is i must say it.....The budget is rather limited, and finding reagents, slaves, drugs, Skeletons, alcohol and the rest of the important nessecities for research does not come from nowhere......yet.

And before you suggest it, no the detention students are not a viable use of skeletons.

When we have more, maybe we can do multiple research items at a time, but for the time being, it may be best to go in a triangular fashion, with one branch going first, the next researching next, the third after that, back to the first ad nausium.

I am of course delighted to hear discourse however, so do please find flaws with my proposal
>>
>>2704117
Don't worry about a spirit infestation... I'll take care of that...
>>
>>2704124
I've just been using the students who score lower than 30% on quarterly exams. They dont seem to mind if you borrow them in their sleep.
>>
>>2704121
That was what old Mal said a few years back, remember? And look where that got him - killed attempting to steal the corpse of Saint Alexa from right under the nose of her entire Order all on his own.

We're a university of civilized individuals, not a disparate collection of barbaric tribes. The entire point of us abandoning the old practice of taking apprentices and teaching them everything we know only to be betrayed and slain by them in a moment of weakness is that we may achieve more by working together than alone.
>>
>>2704129
Unfortunately detention children are already used to fix up the zombie's. And some of them are rather high achivers........
Cut it down to 25% and we can safely say they failed horribly, and were much more useful as zombies. At 30% they are eligible for intelligence enhancing spells.....Hmm.......

>>2704131
In hindsight, trying to steal a saint's body was doomed to fail anyway and we are much better off with that.......Lower than avarage level of common sense among our ranks.
>>
>>2704135
Can I take their spirits... please? I don't want them getting lost and lonely...
>>
>>2704123

Ah it looks like the grant goes to Sir Nevermore! We will fund your efforts to developping enhanced right by redirecting bloodflow to the eyes. It seems promising to not only enhance natural sight, but give supernatural abilities and detect undead entities. Though I would give a slight critique and suggest perhaps a catchy name be attached to the spell?

Alrighty then, gentlemen, in the meantime You may choose to submit your proposals for the next review!

>>2704143
Welcome, Professor Protellio! Your services are appreciated, but the rat situation is resolved. If it pleases you, you may choose another action, but I must insist that you roll again unfortunately...
>>
>>2704144
The rolls are for selection, success is guaranteed, but the power and nature of the spells are limited by the tiers. So for now, Tier 1 spells can only be casted upon the caster. You can certainly collaborate for researches, but at the end only one branch can learn the spell for immortality.
>>
>>2704141
Seek no more for zombie falls under the art of blood. It is purely fleshcraft with mind projection to allow direct control from its crafter. However, it is also train it like a dog for my research suggest that certain parts of brain are active even dead and it impact the basic animal instinct. Raise dead which retain partial the deceased'smind require art of spirit if i am not wrong

>Propose Institute Mascot
I'm sorry, but what exactly was wrong with out old mascot?

As I recall, Mr. Bones the Skellington was beloved by over 90% of the student body, and 36% of the surrounding populace.

>>2704135
You think so? I hear he almost made it out alive, but stopped to monologue at the wrong moment and got blindsided without anyone watching his back. Man always did have too much of a flair for the theatrical.

I mean, I have as much respect for the old ways as any of us, but sometimes I get the feeling that 'old' means less 'well-tested' and more 'senile'.

>>2704144
Indeed, but what is academia if not subject to peer review?
>>
>>2704152
Why how insightful, this is a rather interesting idea that the mind could endure after the body without the existance of the ghost........Why i have a theory just now, i shall relate it more once i return to the collage.

>>2704155
Those 36% were the ones who were spared when he got out that one time, a crafty bugger that one. Why i think he caused a few deaths with that oil and matchstick spell
>>
>>2704152
Yes... Spirits binded to zombies are controlled by the caster but they have their own free will to an extent. We can bend their will or order them not to do it in the first place. If the caster dies, the zombie will is freed. Useful when you give them a job, like HR. I'd LOVE IF THEY WERE HR...
>>
>>2704155
Well, it may have been beloved by the school certainly, but we believe the subject matter made for poor choice in terms of merchandise...skeletons don't make for good plushies, you see. And "Fightin' Skellies" doesn't have that oomph...
>>
>>2704156
In my experience, spirit and mana are one and the same.

As mages, we exert our will over environmental mana to cast spells. Spirit-binding is much the same, save that the mana we manipulate has more of a mind of its own.

Not to say that free-floating mana or mana attendant to physical objects doesn't also 'fight back' as it were, but more on that some other time.

Truly a shame. He was the mascot when I first arrived here; I'll be sad to see him go.

Sentimental as it may be, I stand by Mr. Bones. He will always be the mascot on my heart (or appropriate necromantic substitute).

Perhaps I will go speak to the townsfolk. Recruit some of them, or if nothing else, lament Mr. Bones' fate with the ones who still cherish him.

Hmm, yes, I like the name...I'm not in love with it, but I don't hate it. Perhaps Instead of a bone dragon, we can make it a dragon with bone scales and armour? Yes, I understand it wouldn't be prickly then...hmm...this will require further talks, but seeing as there are no other suggestions we may as well accept Prickles as the face of the Institute...

> Issac Helman: +5 Favour (bonus applies when you propose research)

Now we await the submission deadline...
>>
>>2704194
Thank you headmaster, it is no trouble when you have help. Why even one of the students helped.......Shame he was crushed but that is enough of that.

Anywhom, I have a theory ready for the next submission Place, but i must ask if any of our spiritually inclined proffessors are open to giving it a critical once over
>>
>>2704199

>>
>>2704194
>Isaac gets the credit

>This gives me so many ideas

"OH! Well I again propose bone molding! To provide an example I crafted this dragon out of various animal bones and reshaped them into this glorious creature." *jazzhands*
>>
>>2704199
By all means, my friend. I could stand to do something less emotionally taxing than haggling for the remaining stocks of Mr. Bones merchan- that is to say, interviewing potential recruits.
>>
>>2704202
Why my current thoughts lead me is to a singualr idea that the headmaster has so graciously inspired. Our current zombies are rather lack luster and those trees were a joint breaker to move, So i thought, why not make stronger minions, such as maybe......A bone golem.

Now of course i then thought about the strenghening of the bone and making it still human sized but realised that it requires something......More to make them a worthwhile addition. And so my perposal is twofold, do you think that ensnared spirits could enhance the golems ability to function, and do you have any idea how spirits will interact with bone and mone magic, possibly as a source to power the strengthening wards?
>>
>>2704212
I'm virtually proposing the same thing. Just in not so many words. Mold bone into a form AND CREATE LIFE
>>
>>2704214
Not life, We are not gods yet.

But enhanced undead, that we may do my dashing face claimer
>>
>>2704216
Underachieving may birth more success. Overachieving is where the rewards are plentiful. But we will see how this turns out.
>>
>>2704212
>do you think that ensnared spirits could enhance the golems ability to function
Are you specifically referring to providing the golem with some degree of autonomy? If so, certainly - but you will need to be careful not to furnish the golem with too much independent thought. A weak-willed caster may find themselves overwhelmed by the egos of minions handed to them by more adept users.

>>2704212
>do you have any idea how spirits will interact with bone and mone magic, possibly as a source to power the strengthening wards?
They will be consumed, at rates dependent on how much mana you require. Whereas naturally-occurring souls have the means to replenish themselves under their own power, our (or at least my) necromantic magic is not quite at that stage - yet.

You could, of course, artificially have the golems periodically resupplied with mana from an external source.
>>
>>2704194
Aaaand the grant goes to Professor Protellio! A magnificent spell indeed, the board was impressed by using the function of breathe to invoke the power of the Spirit. I will suggest the same critique that I had to Sir Nevermore about the naming of the spells, however. Something that can encapsulate the spell in three or fewer words...maybe a necrotic shout?

Alrighty then, gentlemen, in the meantime You may choose to submit your proposals for the next review!

Then three sacrafices, with three professors working on it........The soul can be a spirit, the body made of bone and maybe use the blood as a way to replenish itself? The blood could possibly be used to power the soul, and this allows for a way for it to refuel.

One for the future, don't you all agree?

>Spell Research (T1): Strengthen Spirit
Converts mana from an external source - typically ambient mana or a mana well, but also potentially a willing or subjugated subject - into the user's spiritual energy, strengthening their will and focus.
>Spell Research (T1): Aether Sight
Grants the user the ability to observe flows of mana and spirit in their surroundings. With sufficient experience, the user may identify the spiritual signatures of other individuals at a distance, or anticipate spells being cast while they are still being woven.

Indeed, converting spiritual energy into raw magical power is the very principle on which our Soul Well functions. But without the in-built enchantments of the Well augment the user's abilities, the collection process would be far less trivial.

I fear creating a similar spell dedicated for personal use may be beyond our current capabilities.

Basically, since it would affect surrounding spirits, that sort of spell would constitute a Tier 2 spell, which we can't research just yet.

I do like the sense of cooperation the faculty has. We will accept Professor Mevron and ???'s submission from the Bone Department, it could prove to have some valuable uses in the future. Now gentlemen, If you would care to induldge an old hands ramblings, back in the war of the 7th ice shard, There were tales of men clad in furs and weilding two axes whom were fast as the wind and refused death until the last foe had died, supposedly through their connection to a deity known as the bear king.

Would it not be possibly to partly replicate this battle lust with blood magic? Possibly imbuing your blood with vigor, maybe bypassing ruptured veins, As a form of beserking state, or a state of enhanced strength and vigor.....

I can think of many apprentices who would find use of this spell with their peers, So i am sure it would be popular both on the battle field and off.

Yes, well it looks like the grant goes to Professor Protellio again this round! The spell is unique in that it uses a caster's own spirit to imbue animation into inanimate objects. However, one should be careful, as allowing too much necrotic energy can drain the caster himself. Of course, the process is reversible, so while you may want to make a broom dance for an hour, you can easily take back a part of your spirit when you have finished your entertainment.

Indeed. Now I can submit my proposals without feeling bad.

As a former colleague of mine has asked for my assistance in a rather delicate situation, I will be abroad and away for the institute for some time. However, I've left some files' worth of proposals and preliminary research for your perusal in my absence. With luck, these should hold over until my return.

I'll be away for the next few hours. Assume that for each term, I submit one of the following spell research proposals, in roughly this order of preference, skipping ahead to higher tiers of research when they become available:

>Spell Research (T1): Aether Sight
Grants the user the ability to observe flows of mana and spirit in their surroundings. With sufficient experience, the user may identify the spiritual signatures of other individuals at a distance, or anticipate spells being cast while they are still being woven.
>Spell Research (T1): Strengthen Spirit
Converts mana from an external source - typically ambient mana or a mana well, but also potentially a willing or subjugated subject - into the user's spiritual energy, strengthening their will and focus.
>Spell Research (T2): Spirit-Mana Conversion
Converts spiritual energy from a source - typically ghosts of the recently deceased - into a sink - typically the user's mana, enhancing spellcasting capabilities. Also includes the reverse process (i.e. Strengthen Spirit) if not already unlocked, and internal-to-external conversion.
>Spell Research (T2): Harmonize Spiritual Energy
Attunes the user's spiritual energies with a target's, creating sympathetic connections. Target becomes more susceptible to magical manipulation from the user (e.g. speak with dead, domination effects, Spirit-Mana Conversion). Both energies become more alike in nature and more difficult to distinguish via Aether Sight or other methods that examine spirit and mana. Caution should be had with high levels of Harmonization: unexpected side effects, such as possession, may occur even with users of exceptionally high willpower. Further research required.
>Spell Research (T2): Subjugate Spirit
Dominates a spirit by leaving a residue of the user's own spiritual energy, allowing for control of the subject to be maintained for a longer period of time than conventional methods. If the subject and user are Harmonized, the residue will not fade, but instead be maintained as if part of the target's spiritual energy, and the domination may be maintained indefinitely.

With these, and some method of permanently anchoring a spirit to a body, that golem idea should become rather more viable. In theory, a Harmonized spirit should act independently with intents similar to the attuned user's, but I can't be sure on that without looking into it further - hence Subjugate Spirit included there as a failsafe.

Now let me review the proposals....

Aha! Well it seems to me that the Professor of whose identity we have forgotten has won our favour today! The Chilled Spine spell will certainly be effective for practicioners of the Path of Bone, especially when dealing with undesirables and unspeakable dangers...

Faculty:
> Sir Nevermore: Path of Blood, 1 spell, +10 Favour
> Janus Scrivener: Path of Spirit, 0 spell, +10 Favour

> ???, Path of Bone, 1 spell
> Reginald Mevron, Path of Bone, 0 spell, +25 Favour

Now staff, it seems that Professor Helman's suggestion will be taken into consideration. We will of course need some help capturi--I mean, finding willing spirits to fill the pen, as well as building the area itself. Understand though, only those who can see the spirits or attract them with a necrotic shout can help capture these spirits...

Uni's Quests (Choose One):
> Fill Spirit Pen [Bloodpath or Spiritpath casters only]
> Build the Spirit Pen
> Host Detention

The Post Mortality Institute of Advanced Learning (Fightin' Bone Dragons!):
> Blood:
>> Bloodsight (T1): Enhances abilities of sight by redirecting blood flow to the eyes.
> Bone:
>> Shatter Bane (T1): Strengthens the density and fortitude of a caster's skeletal structure.
>> Chilled Spine (T1): When danger is nearby, the caster will feel a sharp coldness in his spine. Passive spell.
> Spirit:

We plan to sell services to the locals who can tour the Spirit Pen and meet with spirits face to face, sort of like a stables, but with much less odour. As a result, our budget has been expanded, and the board is happy to announce that we will be able to support funding for two research proposals per turn!

Now let me reconvene with the board...
>>
>>2708274
"Oh my, what a wonderful turn of events, Now my dear proffessors, i would make an unconventional idea.......What if we were to set up a out of town outpost, and use that as a grounds to open a buissness venture, such that our craft naturally excels at. Say, an alchemy shop.

It would open up some revinue, give our students some on hand experiance about running business and generally being a useful venture. Possible to even recoup us the money invested, as well as new talent and bodies if we opened a cemetery.

>>
>>2708310
As for research, what have you come up with for the next proposal? I'm going to get boneshaping approved if it kills me!

I was also thinking of Bone Shanking. Molding tho bone of the forearm to sharpen and pierce out your flesh into the unsuspecting victim. It would be complimented well by your Shatter Bane.
>>
>>2708319
Indeed, a compliment indeed But we must let the others have their turns, I do think it is the spirit schools choice next. Though i admit, bone shaping would be god could we not also alter it to become bone growth? directing it to grow and retract in certain shapes?
>>
Aaand the grant goes to Professor Scrivener, congratulations! His research into Aether Sight, while inspired by Bloodsight, will be helpful both for helping spiritpath casters observe the flows of spirits they work so much with, and properly monitor the amount of mana stored in artifacts, spells, or magical creatures!

Faculty:
> Sir Nevermore: Path of Blood, 1 spell, +10 Favour
> Janus Scrivener: Path of Spirit, 1 spell, +10 Favour

While the board prepares to review the next round of proposals, there is a delicate to be discussed. We believe that a school relic has been stolen...the Skull of Mort Doomweaver, the first Headmaster of our school! Apparently the lowborn guard we hired fell asleep on the job, and the school vault was tampered with. Everything remained except the skull! We have our best people on the case, but if you have time away from your research, assistance is certainly appreciated...

And have you any other thesis, apart from bone manipulation/generation?
>>
>>2704613
Well the board has decided to grant our first T2 spell, alongside a third T1. With Strengthen Spirit, Spiritpath casters will be able to absorb mana to strengthen their own will and focus, and with Spirit-Mana Conversion one can use lost, wandering souls in spells that manipulate the soul (such as for Necrotic Shout or Strengthen Spirit).

Faculty:
> Sir Nevermore: Path of Blood, 3 spell, +10 Favour

> Joan Portellio: Path of Spirit, 2 spells, +5 Favour

Now that the mystery behind the skull is solved, we must prepare ourselves for the upcoming match against the Academy Worms! Our defense is shoddy at best, perhaps a Bonepathed one could teach our students the proper Shatter's Bane form, or a Spiritpathed one could teach how to intimidate an enemy with Necrotic Shout.

Beyond just coaching, we could use some cheerleaders. Maybe someone to dress in our Prickles outfit? And if performance isn't your art, we could always use promoters...

>>
>>2709035
Sure, if you desire you may!
>>
>>2709025
I propose 2 spells...
One T1 spell called “Spirit regeneration by spirits”, AKA SRS. SRS is a technique I found out while playing with the spirits... I used Aether Sight to see where most of their concentrated spirit was. Usually in the middle of the animals. Then Spirit-Mana Conversion to get some spirit mana in my hands.

With my hands with spirit mana now, I rip off the a portion of their spirits. Now I activate SRS and eat the portion of the spirits soul. It increases your mana pool, your life expectancy and makes you younger, at a cost. You start losing yourself, as now your body is now holding a another ones portion of their soul. Make sure to not have less soul than the souls your getting, or you’ll lose yourself completely. It’s a risk I don’t mind...

The second spell is a Tier 2 spell called “Spirit Fusion”

It works well with SRS. Like name implies Spirit fusion, fuses spirits souls together. The spirit transforms to something completely different entirely, caring both of the characteristics of the souls fused. The soul of the spirit is neither of the souls used when fused. Their also entirely different now.

You could keep casting these indefinitely, or intill Your no longer yourself. We could make horrible spirits like this. I rather not to, right now... Need more data...

Very well then i'll do my second proposal shall be one of first aid in case of dangerous situation. The letter of the professor Scrivener hit home, Raging Army of Over Zealous Paladin can strike any of us after all, better be ready for that.

I hereby propose my next spell the Unconscious Coagulation, a passive spell that precipitate the blood of the caster allowing to stop hemorrhages whenever they may happen. Unless of course the caster wishes to let the blood flow, which is common among us Blood Mage.

Not sure if i need to roll again?

Congratulations Professors Sternes and Issac, it looks like the board has chosen to accept your proposals! Professor Sternes spell to halt the flow of blood will surely be helpful for Bloodpathed mages when they are harmed in battle, and beyond that, helps the Department of Blood understand the minute strings that control blood in one's own body!

Professor Helman's Spirit Regeneration by Spirits, or SRS, takes advantage of Spirit-Mana Conversion to harvest wandering souls for the purposes of gaining spirit and increasing one's mana pool. It will need to be carefully researched however, as its projected that Spiritpathed who are greedy soul eaters may lose themselves to the souls who they have consumed...

[Rolling for T2 proposal: Harmonize Spiritual Energy - limiting myself to one proposal per term in the interest of cooperation]

---

>Year XX Month YY Journal Entry ZZ

>...

>....Lastly, a likely significant note to end the day's entry: my usual methods failed rather spectacularly when attempting to ward off the unexpected appearance of a contingent of paladins. Rather than fall back to the resort of baring steel to defend myself, I chose to enact a field test of some of my recently-submitted working theories.

>Harmonizing with and Subjugating the nearby spirits was barely necessary to stir up a veritable swarm of them, so keen they were to seek vengeance on the knaves who took their lives. With my precise control over their vast numbers, some fairly trivial augmentations were sufficient to decimate the attackers without giving them chance for retreat.

>That is not the significant part; that part is this:

>When I attempted to convert some of those Harmonized, Subjugated souls into raw mana to fuel the amassing of a yet larger horde, I found that I simply could not. Similarly, when I attempted to banish them.

>Naturally, removing the Subjugation is not something that can be done; eliminating a residue is finicky even when dealing with substances more tangible than spirits. O̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶w̶h̶e̶n̶ ̶I̶ ̶d̶e̶l̶i̶b̶e̶r̶a̶t̶e̶l̶y̶ ̶i̶m̶p̶r̶o̶v̶i̶

>I will refrain from detailing the exact process which followed, in case this journal finds its way into the wrong hands. Suffice it to say that the Harmonization process is potentially problematic given improper execution, and its implications are worthy of further examination.

>That said, I fear I may not be able to promptly do so upon my return to the institute; my time spent alongside the spiritualists of this region has given me much to speculate about, and I must organize at least some of my thoughts onto paper before they fully take leave of me.

Aaand it looks like the board will be reviewing two proposals from Professor Mevron! The first of which has been pioneered by our beloved shapeshifter, which allows a caster to (though not unpainfully) shape one's skeletal structure. At last, we have a spell to match those damned Skinwalkers at Murzhaego's Academy!

The second spell, being the first T2 spell in the Department of Bones, allows a caster to organically grow a skeleton from a small fragment, be it a rib cage, skull, or thigh bone. An incredibly useful spell for the Institute in particular, as we no longer have to scavenge the earth for whole skeletons when we can grow one from a small part!

Active Faculty:
> Janus Scrivener: Path of Spirit, 3 spells, +10 Favour
> Issac Helman: Path of Spirit, 1 spell, +58 Favour
> ???, Path of Bone, 2 spell, +5 Favour
> Reginald Mevron, Path of Bone, 2 spell, +45 Favour

Retired (Could be pulled from retirement):
> Joan Portellio: Path of Spirit, 1 spells, +5 Favour
> Sir Nevermore: Path of Blood, 1 spell, +10 Favour

Growing concerns over Professor Scrivener's letter, including a suggestion from our own Professor Mevron, has led the board to allow a minor expedition of students to prepare for defense against paladin attacks. That being said, the budget does not allow us to arrange transportation very far without severely limiting attendance, so the trip will be taken place just by the woods north of the school.

As you all may know, the only real concern in those woods are a lack of sunlight and those annoying wood elves. Therefore, we would appreciate having some faculty volunteers to help us in a convincing charade -- some faculty leaders will lead their group when an ambush of 'paladins' emerge! Being ever so brave, the faculty leaders will engage in mock combat with the 'paladins', demonstrating the proper form and techniques when dealing with the adversary.

The Blood department is falling behind! Preposterous i'll have none of that, especially now that we have students skillful enough to finally finish cleaning, fixing and furnishing it!

My first spell proposal will be an idea i had for some time, following the better control of one's blood we developed here, it should be possible to quicken the rate at which noxious products are drained by the body. It would allow to slow the action of poisons, venom, the such and even cure it. i'm open to suggestion for the name

The second proposal once again my first project the Vampiric hearing, that allow one to perceive the beating heart of close living beings with utmost precision.

>Year XX Month YY Journal (etc.)

>...Strangely enough, I had the oddest premonition that the students back at the institute were being sorely misinformed about the nature and gravity of fighting against paladins. Almost as if receiving some mild feedback through some kind of sympathetic magic being used to monitor myself from back there.

>What a ludicrous notion. Surely I would have noticed any such bugs that may have been placed on my person by now.

>I can only place my trust in my esteemed colleagues that, should such an occurrence come to pass, they would treat the situation with nothing but the gravest seriousness. Surely, rather than making light or sport of these foes, they would do everything in their powers to impart the single verity that paladins are unto anathema to us - their arms, skills and very mindsets sculpted specifically to make them uniquely suited to eradicating users of witchcraft and necromancy.

>Indeed, I would shudder to do battle with them even now, save for my many years of experience, and the rather peculiar situation in which I find myself which lends itself to enhancing my art beyond even their ability to counter.

>Yes, surely they would do this, and not for instance hold some sort of farcical hunt or mock battle against a bunch of fake paladins, and inadvertently teach our students to underestimate this most deadly of foes.

should I stop

Summarizing my present situation as I've detailed it in previous posts: I'm abroad helping a friend with a situation that's now escalated into a full-blown civil war. Paladins are slaughtering the citizens because heretics. (I'm imagining the nation in question as some kind of city-state ruled by a theocratic monarchy, but I haven't actually explicitly said anything of the sort.) Normally I'd be kinda fucked with all these paladins everywhere, but it's a war zone, so there's a fuckton of dead guys floating around to pull shit with. Be back soonish, maybe!

More recently, I took the notion of being magically bugged and ran with it to s̶h̶i̶t̶p̶o̶s̶t muse into my journal about the idea of faking a paladin attack and misleading students to underestimate what it means to fight against them.

My research allowed me to better understand and control he path, flow and working of blood in the body. They advanced enough to try and affect something else than myself with a spell. Seeing every professors play with ghosts or skeletons got me... Envious i'd say? Anyway it is time to dabble in greater magics. Leave the souls and bones to my colleagues, for the path of blood there is only one that matter : Flesh.
It should be possible to animate the body of fresh cadavers, maybe even slow the decay in the process? We'll see.

A project of mine is can the blood of other be used to power oneself? It's surely my passion for healing and survivability that speak, i'm afraid being the only blood professor it will taint the whole school... Anyway blood is full of nutrients and transport the energy for the body. We can perform a Blood to Mana conversion easily. with one own blood it's of course useless but with the blood of other... It would need to be drawn first.

Headmaster i'll also work of a little project of mine if the Institute is willing to allow Blood and Bones to have their own ressources

>- Perform experiments into relation between traditional Spirit necromancy theory, Animist beliefs and Shintoist principles. Correlation between spirit-mana equivalence and concept of 'kami'? Possible test: attempt to channel spiritual energy into inanimate objects.

>- Buy bread; eggs; bone dust; cheese; virgin's blood; milk.

Tier 3 spells for future submission:

As the object's spirit is generated from the user as a source, the newly-generated spirit is inherently Harmonized with the user.

After much deliberation with the given proposals, the board has decided to pursue funding to both Sternes and our shifter friend.

The Blood department is taking large bounds with their reanimation spell, which allows fresh cadavers to be able to walk as if still alive through the miracle of blood. One should make no mistake -- these husks are soulless creatures, but the body is able to dance by the encouragement of enchanted blood. The husks themselves do not appear to possess any intelligence, laying dormant and dumb as the blood pumps once more through their decaying veins.

The Bone department proposes a spell to increase the mass of bone structure, allowing for the construction of larger skeletal structures. Though initially researched for the benefit of our beloved mascot, the implications are...disturbing, the say the least.

It was nothing head master, simply nothing. Though I did have to give up a few bones in the process. Anywho With it being the bone's turn once more, i have two Propositions For research. One is a second tier spell, Allowing Bone to move according to the casters will, some clever little rune work on a prepared bone allowing us to make [and pardon the name] Bone puppets.

And i also have a thesis on a potential tier three spell. A rather dangerous application of Bone shaping, In that the victims bone structure rebels against them causing pain and for spikes to grow into organs, arteries and so on. I heartily agree Mysterious professor, I most heartily agree.

Hmm, do you think golems would be best to use with spirit or with blood? i remeber the designs for a 3 way combo but what do you think is the most important
>>
>>2718483
I would say spirit might accidentally give them free will. But if we had proper containment for this research we could absolutely give it a go!
>>
>>2718491
We may need to inquire about this. If i recall blood was supposed to make it stronger and give it an ability to recharge. Bone was to give it a form and durability while the spirit was the mind and the user of any magic we imbue on it.

In theory this should work. Precautions are needed. It's one thing if our students get soul-sucked, but it's a real setback if the staff does.

It appears that the board has chosen to fund Professor Mevron for his exciting new proposals, both fine additions to the scholarly works of Bone!

The spell of Bone Puppet allows the department to take command of a skeletal form to move as per the will of the caster. It will certainly help scare away wood elves at the very least!

The second spell is much more sinister, allowing a caster to manipulate a subject's skeleton to cause intense pain. Initially it will only be used on non-sentient creatures, but its implications into intelligent life should not be ignored...

Staff, we will be welcoming new students this week. In cooperation with Murzhaego Academy, this will be the pilot year of our student exchange program! Though our methods may differ, we all are committed to the quest for immortality through necromantic means, so an exchange of cultural experiences and ideas are of the utmost importance, especially to our deviant student body. We have limited the program for just one week, but have agreed to allow some faculty to join our exchange students in order to better understand the way our Fleshpathed and Skinpathed cousins live and study.

>> Bloodsight (T1): Enhances abilities of sight by redirecting blood flow to the eyes.
>> Unconscious Coagulation (T1): Halts and releases the flow of blood within the caster's body
>> Vampiric Hearing (T1): Enhances a caster's natural hearing to locate the heartbeats of the living

>> Shatter Bane (T1): Strengthens the density and fortitude of a caster's skeletal structure.

>> Bone Puppet (T2): Manipulates bones to move by the will of the caster.
>> Needles (T3): Grows painful spikes in a living subject's skeleton structure.

> Spirit:
>> Necrotic Shout (T1): Invokes the power of the spirit through the function of the voice
>> Aether Sight (T1): Allows the caster to observe the flow of spirits and mana. With sufficient experience, the user may identify the spiritual signatures of other individuals at a distance, or anticipate spells being cast while they are still being woven.
>> Strengthen Spirit (T1): Allows casters to absorb ambient mana to strengthen their will and focus
>> Spirit-Mana Conversion (T2): Allows casters to now use wandering souls in spells that manipulate the spirit
>> Spirit Regeneration by Spirit (T2): Allows a caster to consume a wandering soul to increase vitality, mana pool, and marginally restore youth
>> Harmonize Spiritual Energy (T2): Attunes a caster's energies with a target's creating sympathetic connections. Target becomes more susceptible to manipulation from the user. Energies become more alike and difficult to distinguish via Aether Sight.

of course we will go back.......But for now it is a race to the finish line of immortality, and with that in mind.

I would bring forward a new thesis, An advancement of shatters bane. It went quite terribly for the most part, with complications at every turn, but was wrapped up well enough. And I had the chance to exchange ideas with foreign spiritualists, which is always stimulating.

I'm not really supposed to talk about it - but if you should hear news that a certain theocracy has recently come under new governance, I may have been somewhere in the area when it happened.

>>2718491

Indeed, the primary advantage of animating something through spirit would be to give it an ability to operate with some degree of independence. But as far as running rogue is concerned, that generally only happens due to particularly poor execution or deliberate tampering.

Having your soul sucked out by an inanimate object is also quite unlikely unless purposefully designed so.

And i am all for supporting a successor quest, this shit is great.

While i am working on my music, i also have another Thesis. I call it "Mage bane" and it is a upgrade for our little puppets, though i suppose any dead surface would do, And by inscribing the correct sigils, The surface would absorb magic or magical effects/creatures that touch the surface before shunting that absorbed magic into further function, possibly back to the mage whom controls it, or maybe a rebounded effect. My thesis has not come up with a satisfying conclusion.

And I believe I had a proposal largely penned out, if I could just find it. Ah, here we go:
>Spell Research (T3): Awaken Inanimate Spirit
Advanced application of Spirit-Mana Conversion. Channels user's own mana and/or spirit into an inanimate object, animating the object as a non-sentient entity. (Entity may instead be sentient if user is proficient in Tier 4 Spirit necromancy.) As the object's spirit is generated from the user as a source, the newly-generated spirit is inherently Harmonized with the user.

A sequel could be interesting. If there's one aspect that I most enjoy here, it's probably the roleplaying. I might like to see a game where some kind of cooperative gameplay rather than competitive.

Of course, as far as I can be of assistance. No hostile takeovers though, I've had enough of those for this month.

agreed on the RPing, and co-operative by nature may be nice. But we "mostly" make it work here.

Ahh my friend We would not be unleashing golems "yet" Proof of concept is required first. A bonding of spirit and bone as a servant, Maybe a cook should be suffeciant to prove it works. Then upscaling onto a large brute with shaters bane/Mages bane provided i get the funding. once we have that proof in the door then we could find a blood minded college and have them assist us with the other aspects. A jolly good show i should think.

And then, of course we can test it by letting it on a short scare rampage through detention or the dorms........He He

The board has decided, after much deliberation, to fund both professors from the department of Bone. The first spell, called Mage Bane, allows bones to become an instrument of mana, capable of absorbing magical effects or creatures that come into contact with its surface. These bones are inscribed with runes that give them this power.

The Bone Pump spell is an interesting application of skeletal manipulation, twisting the ribs to forcibly resuscitate a subject if the subject's heart begins to fail. This will certainly put Bonepathed on the road to immortality by avoiding natural death by heart failure!

Anyway time for some spells. I WILL get this blood to mana spell to pass. Even if i have to burn all other research i ever produced to make it happen.

T2: Blood to Mana spell that will pass this turn. I have faith.

T2: Blood replication, Blood is alive, as such it is capable of replication, using those properties, this spell will allow a blood mage to "cultivate" blood so to say. Our fountain is beautiful but a more... portable solution is always practical.

T3 spell (because heh let's begin): "Lure" an idea i had since some times, i think it's possible to realize it. Enchanting the blood of a creature could allow it to emit a scent, a... sort of magical Compulsion. Be it Hunger, or else, it would attire other creatures to it. I expect mostly carnivorous creature but who know if the compulsion is done well, result might be far wider. A lesser (T2) version of the spell could simply use an offering of blood to place a physical lure somewhere. While a more advanced version (T4) could make even intelligent beings fall to the compulsion.

The board has agreed to fund three spell proposals from the Department of Blood. The first spell, taking inspiration from a similar spell by the Department of Spirit, allows a caster to regenerate mana, vitality, and strength by consuming blood.

The second spell, Blood Replication, allows a blood mage to miraculously 'create' blood from blood, mainly through the infusion of the caster's own mana into the blood source.

The third spell, the first T3 spell in the department, enchants a creature's blood to emit a scent that compels it to attract nefarious figures. Perfect for turning any unfortunate soul into bait!

I did wa? ugh.........this hurts my head......ugh Anyway sir......If you would give me and my department a few days i am sure i can come up with something........satisfactory.

Now for my thesis, i shall scale up Bone puppet to work upon a sentient humanoid......Also known as "Superior puppetry"

Now, i also have a request to make of my colleges in the spirit department to work with me to create basic inteligence creatures......Namely undead horses. I enchant the bones to house a spirit and work in tandem, then i would like you to help me bind a spirit to the bones. we should have undead mounts.

And lastly, I would like to make a T4 version of Bone shaping.

Anchoring a spirit to a dead horse? Certainly something well within my capabilities.

You'll run into the usual issue of a necromancer being required to maintain constant control of the animated beast, so as to provide the anchor with a small but steady supply of mana. In the absence of this, the anchor will begin to draw mana from the one other source it is linked to in order to sustain the spell - namely, the anchored spirit, slowly depleting and consuming it.

I do have some ideas on the cause of this, and how one may bypass this age-old problem to create an anchored soul that is self-sustaining, just as living ones are. But in light of recent events, I have yet to find time to put them to paper. If you'd like to make such a 'living' undead horse, you'll have to wait for me to get that proposal through the board.

From these interviews, it is clear that no ordinary storm had caused this catastrophe. The villagers all have very cloudy memory, possibly caused by trauma, but there are some common notable details, each more bizarre than the next: the storm was very loud, very hot, and very green.

After doing some research on the village, you learn about their history, relations, and demographics. The people are of old blood, descendants of a great general from an ancient empire many years ago. Today they focus their trade in barley and sheep, taking advantage of the naturally rolling hills surrounding them. On the east they border the sea, but the beach is much too dangerous to pursue nautical endeavors. It is believed that the storm had come from this way.

The alumnus has a much more interesting tale. He was a prominent scholar from the Department of Blood, having researched the power of runes engraved in the blood of purehearted souls. Apparently his search for these souls led him into the more devout theocracies of the north. Afterwards, he moved closer to his home village, continuing his research without the annoyance of the Paladin Kingdoms. It is possible that the paladins may have been the guilty party, but they are still far away, and besides, another question remains...who did the alumnus continue his research with?

> ???: +10 Favour

>>2722823
Thanks to a mixture of tracking spells, you were able to identify an anomaly in the hills. A congregation of souls underneath a knoll a couple miles northwest of the city. Using Aether Sight you notice from the shape of their spirits they are neither human nor beast. Waiting for them to leave, you recognize the shape -- goblins, the wood elves more dangerous cousin! I've confronted our alumnus friend with this revelation, and he reluctantly confirms our fears...he has performed his experiments upon the goblins, gaining a nasty reputation with the lot. Its most likely the case that the 'storm' was an ugly vendetta performed by the goblins in retribution for spilled blood. The alumnus hid the information for fear the villagers would ostracize him.

The board has agreed to approve three bone spells suggested by Professor Mevron. The first spell expands the abilities of Bone Puppetry to living souls, particularly those of sentient creatures who are still living. The second spell allows for the construction of undead horses, harnessing the power of restless souls and trapping it inside a skeletal horse. The third spell is also an expansion of a bone spell, expanding its power into sentient humanoids once more.

The board of the Institute has an interesting conundrum on its hands. The village has been graced with goodwill by the Institute, but if these goblin attacks continue, then potential recruits in the school may cease altogether. However, allowing for the deaths will also create an influx of resources towards the institute, such as corpses and souls. The alumnus pledges to gift us the results of his independent experiment if we were to keep the truth about the storm from the village. An open forum will be held about what to do or not to do about this situation, mainly based on arguments in favor of how one proposal or another may benefit the Institute.

I assume this is mutually exclusive with performing research.

"My distinguished colleagues, I put it to you that, as scholars of necromancy, our highest consideration must be the advancement of our art. Therefore, we cannot stand idly by and risk precious knowledge so easily within our reach being lost through our inaction. As such, it is our duty to preserve as best we can the research of our esteemed alumnus.

"And I may note that, in so doing, we also achieve another goal which some among us may value highly: the preservation of the lives residing in that village.

"Never forget, though, that our chiefest concern here should always be the pursuit of knowledge; lives lost or saved in this pursuit are purely incidental. We cannot allow ourselves to be overly fettered by our consciences, for conscience does make cowards of us all, and thus the native hue of resolution is sicklied o'er, with the pale-

Dear comrades of bone, spirit and blood. I whole heartedly agree that morals have little to do with our art and knowledge comes before all, however it serves us to have....certain misinformation in the midst of our little village problem.

Obviously these are goblins but why do we not tell some.. Ahem... Altered truths and then clean up the mess ourselves. We earn good will, the student and staff have some field testing and when we are done we may have some more knowledge. Lets have our cake and eat it too.

Tell the villagers that we found some beasts new to the area, ferocious and vile, and that they are beond your capacity to stop. Our minions will do what the can't and boom. Matter solved.

We still get talent, we maybe bargain for bodies rights or just be happy with lifting one or two, and almus is left out of it.

This menace must be contained. And by contained i mean exterminated. Annihilated. it's very existence erased from the universe. Truly the alumnus should have killed them as soon as the experiments were concluded. I don't care if you want to tell fanciful lies to the village or anyone as a matter of fact. You want to make us look good? Why not? As long as every last one is dead, i'm with you. I'm even volunteering to do the cleansing.

As a matter of fact here is a T3 spell proposal for this very purpose: Apoptosis : Targeted on the very erythrocyte of the victim, better known as red blood cells. The spell will cause them to destroy themselves, causing an immediate asphyxia of the any goblin you cast it upon.

I don't know if a T3 spell is enough to target a goblin, but i'm sure our dear Alumnus must have an answer for this.

Dear Sternnes, i Must confess that i am slightly uncomfortable with this outburst. is there some......trauma you wish to share? I do wish for my colleuges to be of sound mind. But rest assured i do not intend to have any left alive. Undead maybe, but not alive. And a few of my apprentices have been showing aptitude in needles. My only thought is the betterment of this institute. and that does include some less than complete truths. I would never flat out lie about someting that were killing commoners.

Oh but not at all. No trauma or the likes. It's very simple in fact: They are a threat to my specie it seems, i do not need more information, it's enough.
They did not try to understand, they only enacted a blind revenge. Hell, if they had sent a demand for the Alumnus to be sent to them for retribution, i would have accepted for the sake of peaceful cohabitation. I reprove experiments on living sentient and conscious beings.

The board has meanwhile agreed to fund Professor Mevron's two spells and Sternes one proposal.

The Department of Bone has offered two T4 spells; the first, a hex that drains a subject's bone mass according to his hunger. If left undisturbed for a week, the subject's bone will be chiseled into nothingness.

The second spell expands the abilities of Big Boned into sentient subjects. If used properly alongside Bone Feast, one could theoretically enhance another subject so that he will never have to eat again...

After intense research into the nature of blood, including its composition, Sternes offers a spell that targets the very foundation of the substance and destroys it. For now the substance only affects dumb birds and beasts, but with enough research it will soon be able to translate well to sentient beings, such as humans and goblins...

! BONUS IMMORTALITY SPELL ALERT !

With four T4 spells unlocked, Professor Mevron has unlocked several paths to achieve The Immortality Spell! The Department of Bone has several proposals it can pursue, but only one can be chosen due to funding.

> Eternal Skeleton: Adapting from your research of Bone Shaping, Bone Feast, Big Boned, you create a powerful spell that you can enchant on yourself. Your skeletal structure is permanently transformed. Normal fleshy organs are replaced by strengthened bone organs. Your body is entirely regenerative and can accelerate growth at your own will. You do not need to eat as your body feeds off your own bones, which grows back. However, what you gain in eternal life, you lose in beauty: you will literally live the rest of your life as a walking skeleton.

> Lichdom: Adapting from your research in Mage Bane and influence from the Department of Spirit, you've discovered a way to split your own soul into pieces by transferring its power into engraved bones artifacts, known as phylacteries, much like you would do with mana. The body will decay as normal, but will natural death will not reach you as long as the phylacteries exist. When the body is destroyed, it will reform in a safe place as if nothing had occured.

> Reaper: As you have worked on corpses in your career, Death has been silently watching from afar, as she often visits the corpses herself to capture the souls herself. Given your acquired expertise, she offers you a deal -- assist her in her burden, and you may claim a portion of the souls you reap for yourself, expanding your lifespan eternally. Though some may see it as a burden, others see it as a purpose, something lacking for those who live forever.

> ???: Perhaps you have come up with another way? The board will certainly be eager to hear about it...

For now, I'll note that I've been slowly introducing and progressing some ideas and concepts relating to spiritual necromancy throughout the quest through my spells and narrations, for the exact reason that it'd definitely sound far too ridiculous if I tried to explain everything from scratch at once. Unfortunately, I'm still only partway through that, so it'll still sound kind of crazy.

The minions are summoned. The spells are casted. The faculty, gathered. The leader, selected. The goblins wait before us, unknowing of their coming doom...

After taking the blessings of our founder, Doomweaver, our beloved professor Erik Sternes seizes the reins of control and directs the army of skeletons, undead, and mounted faculty into the dreaded hills where the vermin who call themselves goblins live.

The first assault was more difficult than expected. It appears though they live like weevils, the goblins possess some microbe of intelligence, or at least enough to organize a defense. Many a skeleton had been cut down by burning bales of hay and homicidal goblins throwing homemade explosives around without direction. Sternes was the first to rally the Bone Mages to gather the wounded and heal their broken limbs and failed hearts. For that service, the Institute would like to show their gratitude.

One should not forget the incredible feats of our renowned Spirits expert, Janus Scrivener. Without him, we would not have even half the number of captives that we ended up having. Once inside the tunnelled structure of the goblin home, he was able to expend large amounts of mana to quickly identify whereabouts of living goblins through the dirt, directing his extraction squad of minions to capture them effortlessly. The legacy of our dear alumnus shall live on, and for that, the Institute would like to thank you.

Following the skirmish with the goblins, our bloodletting chambers have been filled to the brim, the cattle evacuated temporarily. Our alumnus has continued his research without disturbance and showed us much gratitude. He has submitted a research proposal, Bloodied Runes, which follows a function similar to Mage Bane but with Blood as the item of inscription. The board agrees to fund the project, but not without looking towards Professor Mevron's painstaking research.

Congratulations, friend! The board is ecstatic to hear your proposal of Shard of Dominion! An expert in Bone science would marvel at the discovery of how advanced manipulation of one fragment, when enchanted and placed inside a foreign skeleton, can lead to total control of that individual! Given Mevron's expertise, the control can extend to both beast and man, as well as other intelligent creatures.

The Immortality Spell proposed by Mevron had been one of his own making. A large throne had been sculpted out of bones, enchanted so that when the caster sits inside, he will become one with the throne and be shrouded in the absolute magnificence of Bone magic. The throne also allows him to take control over hosts that have the Shard of Dominion implanted inside them, so that though his physical body may be trapped inside the throne, the caster will be able to live out many more lives than he could possibly dream of. Immortal through the device of infinite mortal lives. Genius!

Thank you my good sir, I am Quite flattered by your words, but this is more than my ego can take without swelling. Now while i hope you may all enjoy my new physical form we still need to see how the throne reacts to anyone but the caster. I do hope it is favorably but we should see.

With any spell researched, the next step, naturally, is testing. Given that Mevron had been the first to research the spell, he has volunteered to be the first to test it as well. All the school'd population huddled around in a two hundered foot radius as they watched the Master of Bone at work. Students, fellow professors, the board themselves, even me, the Headmaster, all excited to see the best of Necromancy at work, proud that it could've only come from the Institute.

Mevron's spell demanded a very amount of mana, so he asked for colleagues in Spirit and Blood to help him, both lending mana from their own soul and blood resources. However, the spell demanded more than that. The shell had been created, the Shards implanted in some left over goblins and donated prisoners, and when the caster finally sat inside the throne...nothing. There was yet one more thing to give...the caster's own life. Mevron, hesitant at the sacrifice but determined to not be made a fool, agreed to the spell's demands, willing to bond his soul forever to the machinations of the spell. The scene was a grotesque wonder -- a bone pierced Mevron's spine from below, exchanging a connection between the savant and the throne. He willed himself silent, and with great mana, shunned his very conciousness into the throne. The great bone seat came alive; rib bone sprung out, hugging tight across the open seat, until the professor was shut inside for good. The minions came alive suddenly, all their will belonging to the Throne. Mevron wove a hand through the prisoner, wiggled an ear through the goblin. He was alive -- more than ever before.

The crowd had cheered, but some grew fearful. What did this mean? Mevron was still underneath the university hierarchy, but his spell had given him a life that was capable of much, much more. It seemed that Mevron sensed that too -- if he wanted, he could shoot spines from his throne and kill all the participants watching, ensuring he was the only Immortal in this world. But would he? ....No, he couldn't. The mortal heart still lingered inside the ivory shell. There were the first year students, always excited when he took the class out for grave robbing classes. His fellow faculty, whom though competed with him for research grants, were always amiable to him and even helped him with research. The board was there too, who was very gracious to him in return for the favours he exchanged to the university. Without them, without the Headmaster, without Scrivener and Shifter, and Sternes, and the retired faculty...he could never have achieved this power.

And so Mevron had a deal struck with the Headmaster. He would pledge his service to the Post Mortality Institute, but in return, he would request all his research about the Mastery spell burned, for fear this awesome power would corrupt others. The board and Headmaster, all relieved, thanked old Mevron, and accepted his final proposal. However some members of the board realized that one with some awesome power as this Immortal could never hold a subservient position, so as a final act of nobility, the board had made an ultimate decision: They would reorganize. Mevron would join the board, along with the Headmaster and two remaining board members, putting him in an executive position to govern and fund the school. Furthermore, the position of Headmaster would be filled by Professor Scrivener, and Professors Sternes and Shifter would be made Deans of their respective departments.

With the crisis averted, and finals awaiting the procrastinating students, the population of the Institute left the Throned Mevron where he sat and rushed back inside the building. Mevron's minions rushed outwards with the remaining Shards, hoping to find further lives to control. They had much work to do...

Thanks for playing! I'll be preparing the next quest soon, feel free to RP this one out or something

And now, in true villainous style, I monologue about my foiled plans.

In general, the progressions of ideas can roughly be separated into two threads. Here's a run-down of the stuff I've mentioned in-character. Going through all my posts to catalog the ideas I've tried to introduce was a pain.

It'll probably be better to wipe the slate clean for a new run, and allow characters to establish their own canons, but this was mine.

The first thread more or less covers the nature of spirits:
>Aether Sight spell (>>2704258):
Implication that spirits and mana share some common nature or trait, since they can be perceived through similar means.

>Comment on spirits and mana (>>2704164):
Spirit-Mana Equivalence - 'Spirits and mana are essentially the same thing, except spirits have wills of their own.' (Spirits are a specific kind of mana?) Also, implication that ambient mana also experiences some similar or related phenomenon.

>Strengthen Spirit spell (>>2704258), comment regarding Soul Well (>>2704285), Spirit-Mana Conversion spell (>>2704613):
Spiritual energy and mana can be converted interchangeably. (Reinforcement of the Spirit-Mana Equivalence principle). Note only external-to-internal and internal-to-external conversions are mentioned; a user's own spirit cannot be directly converted to their own mana or vice versa.

>To-do list (>>2715839):
Mention of Animism and Shinto in relation to spirits. Both belief systems ascribe souls/kami/spirits to basically everything in existence (including, of course, inanimate objects).

>Awaken Inanimate Spirit spell (>>2715839):
Demonstration of previous concept. By channeling spirit/mana into an inanimate object (i.e. Strengthen Spirit on an external target), the object becomes animate. Implication is that the object must have its own preexisting spirit for this to work, because the spell would fail if there was nothing already there to strengthen.
>>
>>2732577
The second thread of ideas covers the topic of spiritual anchors and connections:
>Comment on spirits as power sources (>>2704221):
'Souls anchored by existing techniques differ from naturally-occurring souls in that they can replenish themselves.'

>Harmonize Spiritual Energy spell (>>2704613):
'Spirits can be attuned to one another and linked through "sympathetic connections". We don't yet know what happens if they're linked too closely.'

>Subjugate Spirit spell (>>2704613):
'Under certain conditions, some links can be sustained indefinitely.'

>First Journal Entry (>>2710794):
Some possible side effects of spiritual linking. Spirits Harmonized with and Subjugated by a caster could not be converted to that caster's mana or banished by the same caster. It is not explicitly stated, but the Harmonization had to be deliberately reversed before the spirits could be banished.

>Comment on self-sustaining spiritual anchor (>>2722823): [cf. spirits as power sources]
Such a thing may be possible. [Intended future spell proposal.]

Thanks for the run mate, always up for more.

>>2732577
a very interesting concept Master Scrivener, or rather i should say Headmaster. Then may i suspect that your attempt at immortality would be to bind your spirit into an object/your own body and have them refuse to leave? Very stubbon. I approve.
>>
As a sidenote, will anyone archive this or should I?

From here, there were a few more points I had yet to introduce. I'll be a bit more verbose with these since I'm introducing them from scratch rather than citing existing posts, and explain some of the ideas behind them that might not have gotten into the in-character posts:

>Equivalence of ambient mana and object spirits:
Extending from Spirit-Mana Equivalence and the fact that Animist spirits exist in all things (also cf. early comments comments on spirits and mana regarding ambient mana having something of a will of its own), Janus would conclude that object spirits in the environment and the ambient mana which mages draw on to cast spells are one and the same. But because those spirits are too weak to exert noticeable wills of their own, scholars have hitherto assumed them to be an entity distinct from willed spirits, and labeled them as 'mana'.

>Self-sustaining spirits:
I mentioned this a couple of times, but never made it quite clear what I meant. In the same way that living beings sustain and strengthen themselves by comsuming matter, spirits sustain and strength themselves by consuming spiritual energy (note parallel with Spirit-Mana Conversion spell). But they have no way to achieve this as pure spirits; they have to do this using the physical bodies they're attached to. By eating food, drinking water, even coming into contact with air - all of which possesses its own spiritual energy - these spirits are able to receive that energy through the link which ties them to the bodies in which they were born.

I may also have brought in something about Tsukumogami to back this up; by simply existing and passively accumulating energy over an extremely long time, some object spirits are able to awaken under their own power.

>True Spirit Anchor:
The reason that existing necromantic techniques aren't able to anchor spirits to physical bodies in a manner that allows them to be self-sustaining is that the body already has a pre-existing link to its own spirit, and any spiritual energy accrued through that body's actions will therefore go towards that extant spirit instead of the newly-anchored one. To create the a true, self-sustaining spiritual anchor, a caster would have to break the link to the existing object spirit and re-create it targeting the spirit to be anchored. Depending on the physical body used, this spell would be fully capable of creating a true living, breathing being.

Through the process of researching this spell, Janus would gain a deeper insight into the nature of spiritual connections.
>>
>>2732613
>Regarding Harmonization:
Though I didn't use the same language, the fact that the spiritual residue from Subjugation will be indefinitely 'maintained as if part of the target's spiritual energy' if the target is also Harmonized with is significant. As just mentioned, spirits anchored through existing necromancies cannot be sustained because they do not share a link with the body to which they are anchored. Yet here, the residue is sufficiently identical to the natural spirit that it becomes recognized by the existing link as the same entity.

That Janus couldn't convert or banish spirits he had Harmonized with and Subjugated (cf. First Journal Entry) is that by creating multiple strong links between their spirits is due precisely to this reason. His spirit and those that he had under this control had become effectively one and the same. Attempting to convert what was effectively his own spiritual energy into his own mana failed because it was not within the scope of the spell (c.f. Spirit-Mana Conversion spell). And naturally attempting to banish yourself is quite impossible.

>The last link in the chain:
The specifics of how else I would elaborate the topic of spirital connections aren't quite so significant here; I actually haven't solidly decided on most of them since they're still so far off from being introduced in-character.

The most significant thing I would have to introduce, for the purposes of establishing my chosen method of immortality, is that a link can exist between souls that has a somewhat similar functional effect to a lich's phylactery - that as long as either side of the link continues to survive, neither side can be killed. As both sides would be, magically-speaking, two parts of the same soul, the universe simply refuses to acknowledge their deaths unless both sides would pass on at once.
>>
>>2732617
I'm sure you can see roughly where I'm going with this.

Going through the relevant resources Janus would have had going into Tier 5 research, he would have:
- A spell to link his spirit to another such that neither of them can die as long as the other survives (Insufficient on its own for immortality proper; death still occurs if both parties physically or spiritually expire).
- Spells to boost his spellcasting ability almost indefinitely as long as he has a source of spiritual energy: Strengthen Spirit to boost willpower and Spirit-Mana Conversion to boost mana reserves.
- Various contacts and favors thereof, including '3 genocides' worth of favors' (>>2715839). The penultimate step in the immortality spell would probably also have required the help of a diviner to create a hybrid divination/necromancy spell somewhat related to Aether Sight.

>Some final comments on initial considerations:
Early on, I decided (out-of-character) not to go with traditional methods of undead immortality, like becoming a lich or vampire, since (in-character) I wouldn't have wanted any of the glaring weaknesses they tend to have that invariably result in an eventual - if very delayed - death anyway. So (out-of-character again) I concluded that the means through which I would achieve immortality or the source to which it is tied would have to be something which, unlike (for instance) blood or a phylactery, cannot be withheld, depleted or destroyed.

Several things come to mind which would fulfill that criterion - most of them abstract and therefore basically impossible to turn into a source. Indeed, in the end, I ended up having to settle for something which only technically didn't fit, but which I figured would be more or less good enough.

As for what exactly that something is, I think it's more entertaining for you to try and guess - though I don't imagine it should be too hard. And if ever you hear about a couple of genocides happening one day while Headmaster Scrivener is away on vacation, you could always ask him, and maybe he'll tell you.
>>
>>2732507
And before I forget, thanks for running!

>>2732595
Not exactly, but close. Binding to an easily-destructible object like a body wouldn't have been quite enough to satisfy what I look for in immortality.
>>
>>2732621
>>2732617
>>2732613
This is all very well thought out, And rather puts my own thought proccesses to shame. My mindset was pure practicality, And if that could not be achieved, then something with room for exponential growth/high power ceiling.

Bone shaping? i can make armour, i can use it as an offensive spell, but it isn't quick enough........ so i made needles, for those combat situations my students may enter. Grow skeleton? more resources for less work.

The only part that really stumped me was the immortality option. the ones mentioned by the former headmaster were all good but i didn't want to copy that, come up with something new. And that was surprisingly difficult without treading into spirit or blood territory. So i went for high power ceiling. An army of thralls and the ability to make a fortress with enough time. Possibly growing legs, if possible.

But i think for next quest, if there is one, I will play as a bone mage again.....Or maybe we will get a new path to explore. Who knows, but i think i will enjoy it all the same. A pleasure playing with you gentlemen, and i shall archive the thread now
