/qst/ - Quests

This is an adventure game using a handful of Lego sets as the basis for the scenario. Your goal is to find the ingredients for a Potion of Glamor to fulfill a request from a mysterious client. You, the player, post commands for our protagonist, along with “dice+1d6” in the options field. In turn, I will carry out your commands and post images and narration of what ensues.

Although this is a stand-alone quest, if you’re interested in reading the other stories in this series, the previous two Quests for Playability can be found here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Emily%20Jones. The other two quests I’ve run, Funtron and Fungeon Crawl, are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Fun%20with%20Lego. I keep the Twitter account @LegSlemt updated when a new thread goes up.

Part One of this quest is still up here: >>2703206

Without any further ado, I’ll begin with a few reference images and a short recap.

Why are we trying to brew this potion?
>>

The dwarf has promised you a powerful magic ring in exchange for the potion. It's supposedly more durable than any other object on the Hylic Plane, and if nothing else, you figure you could probably sell it for some extra cash.

You awaken in the darkness.

What exactly just happened? It’s all so hazy. You remember going down into the mines, and then… there were some mice? And something about Bluebears? And now you’re here, wherever that is.

As your eyes adjust to the implied darkness, you catch sight of something gold glittering overhead. Maybe it’s the ingredient you’re looking for!

A small, blue mouse approaches you.

???: “All right, spit it out. Who sent you?”

Who sent you? Wait, did someone send you here? You’re still a little out of it.

ROSALYN: “…a dwarf?”

The blue mouse furrows her brow.

???: “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

MOUSE 1: “Ma, maybe she’s with Seven Dwarves.”

MOUSE 2: “Trying to steal a slice of our pie!”

MA: “I’m gonna ask you again, elf: who sent you? You’ve got the stink of the Bluebears all over you. Did they put you up to this? Best answer fast, unless you fancy a pickaxe though your skull.”

What will you do?

ROSALYN: “—and so I need to get a heart crystal to catalyze the potion, and I just figured that you had them here?”

MA: “And the Bluebears?”

ROSALYN: “When I was in Elfland Square, I stole a lampfruit and the Bluebears were on my case about it, and that’s all! I don’t want any trouble!”

Nothing. I just think it might be a little wiser to keep the animal cruelty until we're done doing business here.

I'm fine with being a dick to all animals.
It's just that there's a mouse ready to slam a pickaxe into our skull.
My idea was to get out of that picky situation, loot the place with or without their permission and then let you introduce the mouse to our foot.

Though it would be nice if we had some sort of target to aim at.

ROSALYN: “Oh, I know that one. That’s the recipe for a Vene—“

MA: “—for a bottle of Not Poison, right? Anyway, you brew it and bring it here and we fix you up your reward. Nice and tidy.”

Surely there must be some way back to the surface. Exhausted by your efforts and your lack of breakfast, you lay down on the mine cart and contemplate your options. Come to think of it, could this be an enchanted golden pickaxe? From what you’ve heard, those are supposed to be Medium Lavender and kind of jagged around the edges, but maybe this is a different kind. There’s an old Elflandic legend about a miner with an enchanted shovel that always pointed him homeward; if you’re lucky, the pickaxe might be able to do the same.

ROSALYN: “Magic pickaxe, take me home!”

You feel a slight tug from the pickaxe, or perhaps it’s just your imagination. Either way, you follow it.

The pickaxe collides with a signpost and whatever it was that you were sensing fades away. That icon is somehow familiar… could it be Ragana’s castle? You’ve always heard that the Precious Crystal Mine and the Cursed Crystal Canyon had an underground passage linking them; this might be it.

However, even if the tunnel were perfectly straight and clear for its entire length, it’d be at least a three-hour walk from here to Ragana’s castle. You’re not even sure Ragana’s castle exists anymore; according to the latest rumors, half of it sank into Leg Slemt while the other half just vanished one day. Still, you used to visit Ragana often enough back in the day that you’d definitely be able to find your way back home from there.

What will you do?

You must admit that you regard the prospect of winding up in Ragana’s living room with a certain degree of dread. It’s not that you still hold a grudge against her—after so many years, the only person you still blame is yourself—but having to explain what you’re feeling? Having to look her in the eyes? Having to face the fact that she’s managed to pull her life back together while you’re still just stumbling around in the dark?

That seems like more than you can bear.

And you have another reason as well. Not long ago, shortly after the birth of Queen Estari, you found a letter from Ragana waiting for you at the entrance to the Healing Hideout.

In it, Ragana explained what had become of her after the collapse of your group of friends, how some human girl had helped her see the light, and how deeply sorry she was for everything that had happened between the two of you. She said she’d hoped to speak with you in person to apologize, but that you’d been out when she came to visit. She also had left a slip of paper with a weird address on it and some postage, and said you could contact her that way if you wanted to arrange a time to meet. It sounded like she really did want to see you again.

You never replied.

You wanted to, yes, and you still wish so badly that you had, but you didn’t. At first it was because you just couldn’t find the right words. Give it time; you’d figure them out tomorrow, you told yourself, and then a whole week of tomorrows passed. Just write something, you said, but it was too important to get wrong; too urgent; too stressful.

And then, finally, it was too late. Months had gone by already; the opportunity had passed for good. You couldn’t possibly send the letter now. Ragana would think so badly of you for taking so long to respond! At this point, you'd only be bothering her. Better to remain silent than face that risk.

The... thing... descends and lands a ways out from you. It looks like some kind of sailing vessel, but only in the loosest sense. Affixed haphazardly to it are parts that you didn't even know existed, and that you feel you'd have been happier never having known about. The mere sight of it fills you with horror. There's no rational explanation in your mind for how such a abomination could have come into existence, not even in the depths of Leg Slemt, and yet somehow you feel like you recognize part of it.

It looks kinda like Ragana's castle.

You bet its instruction manual looks like a real mess, but deep down, there’s another thought that horrifies you most of all: perhaps this thing has no instruction manual at all.

And despite your resistance, your exhaustion very easily finds a way to pull you back down again.

Oh Godt, this is really it. You can feel it. You’re going to die here and the only person who will ever know what happened to you is whatever dreadful archon of Leg Slemt is coming to suck out your soul or drill a keychain into your skull or whatever it is that archons do.

You stumble out into what must be the dining room, or perhaps the dining deck. Your eyes fall immediately on the cheese and sushi and whatever that purple potion is, and a sudden and very keen reminder of exactly how hungry you are rumbles through your gut. You spend a minute or so just staring at the food, wondering if it’s safe to eat. You’ve never heard any stories about people getting poisoned or turned into Lepin by eating food from Leg Slemt, but you’d rather not risk it. But on the other hand, you are awfully hungry. But are you sure it's not poison? You feel like all that foreshadowing in the Legiend of the Chronocler is eventually going to lead to something. But again, you really are hungry, and—

You nod and, following Ragana’s suggestion, join her at the table in silence.

Try as you might, you presently find yourself incapable of forming any coherent words. It all feels too unreal; you’re still not even sure this isn’t some kind of hallucination. If it were a hallucination, that certainly would go a long way toward explaining the decor around here.

RAGANA: “You look famished. Can I offer you some sushi?”

You nod again and she passes you a tray containing a pair of California rolls. It’s your least favorite kind of sushi, but now that you’re starving, even these taste like ambrosia from Legoland. The sensation of eating is too vivid for this to be anything but reality. And even if it’s not, you suppose you might as well go along with it. At least you’ve got food here.

ROSALYN: “No, I mean—more short-term, like, what happened immediately before I woke up here?”

Ragana halts and for a moment, you sense a wave of mutual relief wash over the two of you—relief at the prospect of maybe not having that conversation just quite yet. Somehow, seeing her hesitation goes a long way toward smoothing out your own feeling of dread.

Advance schedule warning: There will be fewer updates this weekend because of a number of events I need to attend, and the same goes for the next two weekends after this one. Inform Ragana that there was a made mouse in her house, and see if she can give us some aid getting our potions back, but don't mention anything about the dwarf's job order.

I would rather not help the mice brew a not-poison to kill a human.

I have no intention to let that happen either. Though I do have to mention I am curious what the potion does.

"Well..." Rosalyn got quiet and stared blankly at Ragana for a moment. Then after a while a small tear appeared in her eye: "It was a travesty. Their little disgusting paws were everywhere. Please, I'm begging you to help me. There is a rodent mafia in the mines. Disease made material. I want you to drown them. Enslave them. Do whatever you want just be sure the vengeance is cruel enough so it will erase that haunting memory.

Murdering them may be too harsh, but there may still be something we could do about them...in fact, doesn't Bluebeary owe us a favor? Just tip him off that the mouse mafia stole our ever important potions that we were totally going to use to help all of elfkind, or something like that. Keeps us from getting involved and still gives us some revenge and gets our stuff back to boot.

Major Status Update
——————
I’m sorry for the lack of updates since last week. I’ve been preparing to move, and the timeframe for that has moved up significantly from what I’d anticipated. The result is that an unexpectedly early deadline has come up for the conclusion of this quest. July 23rd through July 27th will be the last period of time in which I am able to work on this quest normally, and unfortunately it could be two years or longer before I have access to these sets again for long enough to run another quest.

Despite this, I am committed to seeing this story through to its conclusion. I also want to bring closure to the Quest for Playability storyline as a whole. My original plan was to finish this quest, run one more Quest for Playability afterwards, and follow that with a finale to the entire series, but this will not be possible using the current reader command format. Continuing to write it update by update would take more time than I have left.

As the readers of this quest, how would you feel about changing from the reader command format to a non-interactive format? This would essentially be like a webcomic. Writing that way, I believe that I would be able to complete not only this quest, but also the entire Quest for Playability series before the end of July.

Please let me know your thoughts on this. Since this would mean that reader input would no longer directly influence the quest, if you have any final commands, plans, or suggestions for Rosalyn in general, please post those here as well.

Also, for those of you who have been following the Quest for Playability as a series, if there is anything you would like me to address in the final two acts of the series, I am interested in hearing it.

I’m sorry again for the trouble, and I hope I can bring this quest to a satisfactory conclusion despite the obstacles facing it.
>>
>>2742943
Shit, man. Two years away for someone as clearly in love with Lego as you are? I'm sorry to hear this.

And you know what? Your writing is so good I wouldn't be opposed to loss of interactivity.
Though I think, since you won't be doing this 24/7, you could take some general suggestions in the breaks? Maybe?

And for the final suggestion, I'd like for Rosalyn, Cronan and Ragana to try to get their personal lives together and become friends again.
>>
>>2742957
Don't forget Lumia.
She was our friend as well.
Considering she saw her best friends turn to the darkness (Rosalyn isn't exactly on the good side either), being unable to do anything about it because of her duty, which I suspect hit her the hardest, I would say she deserves some sort of closure as well.

>all 4 of them, united as friends once again, sailing away on Ragana's ship going on the adventure they promised they would have together when they were younger. Roll credits.
>>
>>2743026
Eeeh, I didn't like Lumia much after the shit she did to Sophie.
>>
>>2743043
To be fair her best friend turned evil did steal the dragon egg and Sophie wasn't honest with her either.
Sure she's not the friendliest type around but she was good friends with the other 3. It would feel strange to leave her out.

To be honest OP I was a huge fan of fungeon crawl but I was never a huge fan of the sophie/emilie/elves even but I stuck with it because I liked your writing and I like quests with visual elements. If you want to swap to a non interactive format I would still read it, since I never felt very invested in Rosalyn but the stuff you do with the lego.
>>
Thank you all for your feedback! I will start with the new format on Monday, and hopefully things will move quickly from then.

>>2742957
Also, I'd be happy to take general suggestions between updates.

Godspeed OP. Terrible to hear you'll be seperated from these sets for years, is there anything we can do to help?

I'm planning on taking one of those Classic tubs with me, and I'll probably be back in town when there's a holiday. I just don't think I'll be back for much longer than a week a time, which isn't long enough to run one of these quests. I might try doing a drawquest in the meantime, though, or else cobbling together something out of the tub. But for now, I'll do my best to wrap up the stories that I've already begun.

ROSALYN: “I do still brew a few potions now and then…”

You leave the question of your livelihood at that, and Ragana doesn’t press you any further.

You pick up Old Faithful and test its balance. You’re not that accustomed to bows with physical projectiles, but it’ll do for now. There’s one recipe that you’ve always wanted to try, and this might be your chance.
