You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Though you wanted it to last longer, your and Dorothea's brief shore leave on Earth had to remain as such. There was simply too much to do to stay for too long.

Already, you were sitting in Dorothea's temporary office aboard the Gladius, one of Pacifica's support carriers that was holding orbit above Earth among the countless NUNS ships forming the planet's defensive screen.

It was just a simple tea time with the Admiral as she reviewed her datapad, quickly catching up with what had happened with her fleet while she was away. You see her eyes dart from side to side as she absorbs the data, casually sipping her tea all the while. It was clear this was something she did on a regular basis.

"Well," She sighs as she finally looks away from her screen, "the good news is that the fleet's still there. The Zentradi have been quiet so far, so maybe they really are busy regrouping."

"That should give us some time." You nod. "And what's the not so good news?"

"It appears Admiral Collier was much craftier than I expected." Dorothea shakes her head. "Apparently the moment we accepted Collier's deal, Karla had Amy whisked away to one of her research facilities, no doubt to test those new Fold boosters she was talking about."

"I shouldn't be surprised." You groan.

"They've made no secret as to where they're going." Dorothea points to a set of coordinates on her screen. "Still, I don't want to keep delaying my obligations to the fleet to chase them down."

>The fleet will be fine. Let's go after them.
>You go on ahead. I'll go after them.
>Amy can take care of herself.

"You go on ahead. I'll go after them." You say standing up from your chair.

"Harry, you don't have to-" Dorothea frowns.

"You need to get back to the fleet, right? Then this is the best way." You point out to her as you gently set your teacup down on the table. "Besides, it should be in range of my Valkyrie. Just trust me on this, okay?"

"All right." Dorothea nods and bites her lip. "Please be sure to report back."

"And if I don't?" You ask curiously.

"Then I'm turning my fleet around and tearing that base apart with my bare hands." Dorothea says matter of factly. You get the impression that she was dead serious despite her lighthearted tone.

"I'll keep that in mind." You give a snappy salute as you take your leave.

"Fly safe." Dorothea says.

"When have I not?" You grin smugly as Dorothea just shakes her head at your response.

You quickly launch off of the Gladius in your Excalibur. The moment you clear the flight hangar, you see the assault carrier disappearing in a flash of rainbow light as it Fold jumps away. Looks like Dorothea was serious about getting back. That just let your lone Valkyrie floating alone in space, with Earth a blue orb in the distance.

Not wanting to waste any time yourself, you punch in the coordinates for Collier's base into your navigation computer, and your Valkyrie automatically begins adjusting its course to point int he right direction. There's another flash of rainbow light as your Valkyrie Fold jumps.

You didn't have much time until you reached your destination. You were going to have to figure out what to do once you got there. Perhaps you could arrive in stealth mode, try and recon the area and see what Collier and Karla were up to. Then again, they might not appreciate you snooping around.

Hell, maybe they weren't up to anything shady at all, hard as that might be to believe.

You drop out of Foldspace and you're immediately greeted by sensor warnings as over a dozen defense satellites lock on to you.

"Oh! Sorry about that, Captain! Security is a bit tight around these parts!" Karla's voice chuckles over your comms. "Just give me one second..."

And the warnings finally shut off as the satellites cancel their weapon locks and return to their standby mode. That finally gave you a chance to get a good look at your destination.

In contrast to the vibrant blue and green Earth, up ahead, you could only see an orange and amber ball of sand. A completely lifeless desert planet that barely even had a habitable atmosphere. Up in orbit, you could see a rather sizeable NUNS fleet along with the stationary satellite defense network. Whatever was here, NUNS and Collier definitely thought it warranted heavy protection.

"All right, we're clearing you to land at the main facility!" Karla continues, and a nav beacon flashes on your HUD, pointing down to the desolate planet. "Just head on right in!"

You warily set your course to follow the beacon, passing the NUNS ships as you go. Up above, a patrol flight of VF-117s swoop by, as if investigating your presence before continuing on their patrol.

Down below, you squint your eyes as you descend through the practically nonexistent atmosphere, the beacon your only guide until you could see a massive sandstone mesa, easily the size of a large city. As you descend, you sensors begin to pick out sensor posts and weapons batteries hidden among the rocks and sand, no doubt tracking you as you approach.

And on cue, you see a cavity open up in the top of the mesa, massive hangar doors sliding open to reveal shaft leading underground. Previously hidden landing lights illuminate the opening, beckoning you to enter. You drop speed as you hover over the shaft and then descend, landing in the cavernous underground hangar below.

As you land, you notice there's no ground crew present, so you disembark your Valkyrie yourself. The hangar was cavernous and chilly, and you note it was pretty dimly lit, as well. It certainly didn't feel like a regular NUNS base, that's for sure.

And yet, you still didn't see anybody around.

You take the opportunity to explore the the "hangar" for a bit, passing by a few parked craft, mostly just shuttles and transports. However, it quickly becomes evident to you that this place was not built by human hands, much less NUNS. You take out a flashlight from you pocket and illuminate the darkness ahead of you, where you could see the walls weren't the sandstone you expected, but grey stone with alien runes and letters carved into it.

It looked familiar somehow, and that's when it hit you. You remembered it vaguely from some past briefing or file that passed your eyes at some point.

It was Protoculture script.

"Enjoying the view?" Karla asks as she appears behind you, that typical smile on your face.

"I should have figured Collier would set up a lab in a place like this." You grumble. "So what exactly did you find here?"

"Oho, you'll see." Karla grins as she motions for you to follow.

Karla leads you to a far off security door that automatically opens on her approach, leading to an elevator that drops even deeper underground. You cautiously step in the cab with her as she hits the button, and the elevator begins to descend.

"So, Harry." Karla smiles as she looks out the observation window, merely showing the shaft wall as the elevator descends. "What's your take on force multipliers?"

"Excuse me?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I'm sorry, I guess the more general term is 'superweapons'." Karla chuckles. "Reaction weapons, dimension eaters, that sort of thing! What do you think about their use?"

You eye Karla cautiously, wondering where she was going with this.

"Only as measures of last resort." You grunt. Reaction and dimensional weaponry tended to cause huge amounts of collateral damage that you weren't fond of. Irresponsible use of such weapons had the potential to be highly destructive to everybody involved.

"A perfectly understandable position to take!" Karla nods. "Still, it's always useful to have the capability, right?"

"I suppose." You frown wondering what exactly Karla was getting at.

And then the scenery in the observation window changes, as the shaft wall gives away to reveal another massive underground chamber. Large, elegant spires rising from the bottom of the chamber, glowing a soft purple hue, came into view instead, bathing the entire cavern in an alien light. Some sort of Protoculture building or device?

"We're not exactly sure what it is. Not 100%, anyways." Karla explains, as if sensing your question. "Our best guess is that it's some type of communications device, meant to send Fold waves over large distances."

"And is it... operational?" You narrow you eyes at the glowing structure.

"Unfortunately, no, which is why we haven't been able to determine its purpose." Karla shrugs, but you can almost swear you could see her eyes glinting. "But, some of its components had recently activated, which has opened up some very interesting possibilities..."

The elevator finally reaches the bottom of the chamber, where there's a tram car waiting for the two of you. You both board it and the tram zooms forward into the heart of the Protoculture structure, where you could see an extensive lab complex constructed at its foot. The tram enters the complex, where you could immediately see a rather nervous looking Amy standing on an elevated podium, surrounded by several odd, gray tubes suspended in the air. You had the urge to call out to her, but you were separated by thick observation glass.

"What's the meaning of this?" You growl.

"Those are the new generation Fold boosters Collier promised." Karla says simply. "They just need to be calibrated to Amy's Fold waves, that's all. Don't worry, you can talk to Amy once the procedure is finished."

"I want to talk to her now." You say grimly as you exit the elevator and make your way towards the security door leading into the chamber. Up ahead, you can see a pair of guards stand in your way, ready to repel you.

"Still so troublesome." Karla sighs. "All right, fine. Just make it quick."

Karla gives a simple wave to the guards, who quickly step aside. You stride past them as the door opens.

Amy's head swivels over to your direction, and her expression immediately brightens as she leaps off the podium, landing on her feet and standing up to greet you.

"Cap! You made it!" She says happily, stepping forward as if to hug you but stopping herself. Maybe she was afraid of showing her affection in front of strangers? Well, whatever.

"Are you doing all right, Amy?" You ask her, looking her over. No sighs of any trauma, which was good.

"Yeah, just a bit tired." Amy yawns. "They didn't do anything to me. Just said I was supposed to stand on that thing and sing a few songs they gave me."

"And you're fine with it?" You ask her.

"Well... it's supposed to help us in the next battle, right? Amy looks down and bites her lip. "If doing this means we don't have to fight..."

"Is this really what you want?" You put a hand on her shoulder.

"I... I don't know." Amy sniffs. "I get a feeling that... that once we do this, there's no going back. But I can't think of any other way to keep everybody safe!"

"You do know that Karla's just using you." You say.

"Yes, yes I do." Amy sighs. "I really get the feeling that they've got something else cooking here, but I don't know what!"

Well, of course Karla, and by extension Collier, would have their own agenda. But what could they possibly do with Amy's voice data here that could have more impact than existing weapons of mass destruction?

"All right, here's what we do, then." You say as you lean forward and whisper in Amy's ear, making sure Karla couldn't see from the other side of the glass. "You just keep playing along and do what they ask. I'll do some snooping. Got it?"

"Sure thing, Cap!" Amy smiles and winks. "Just be careful!"

"I'm the one that tells you that." You chide as you straighten up. "Go knock 'em out."

Amy gives you the thumbs up and steps back up on the alien podium, those mysterious cylinders hovering around her. You head back to the door, where it seals behind you.

"All right, everybody, let's get this started!" Karla bellows as she claps her hands together to grab everybody's attention. "We'll be starting the first song sample in thirty seconds! Make sure you're ready by then!"

And at that, the gathered scientists and lab techs become a hurricane of activity as they dash back and forth or tap away furiously at their workstations. Karla keeps her eyes on Amy via the observation glass, as are the guards, leaving an opening for you to slip away.

Your training kicks in as your gaze darts from scientist to scientist, looking for one that would be the most likely to yield information to you. However, the scientists here were a bit varied, meaning there were different approaches on how to proceed.

There was good old fashioned intimidation, which you think would work on some of these lower level scientists, or you could talk to one of the senior scientists and trick them into revealing something.

Or, maybe you could charm one of them, considering there were a number of female scientists...

"Naru? That's a cute name." You say as you lean even closer. You could see Naru getting more anxious at your presence, her fingers fidgeting and her face turning red. "Sorry, I'm just a fighter jock so all this sciency stuff is a bit beyond me. You think you could fill me in?"

"W-well, I suppose." Naru takes a breath, glad that you've handed her the initiative now. Her eyes dart to yours for a brief second before returning to her screen, which just shows a bunch of what looks like random letters and numbers.

"You see, what we're trying to do is record the subject's Fold waves as she sings." Naru explains.

"You mean record her song?" You frown. "Can't you do that normally?"

"Well, we can, but the Fold wave effect is significantly reduced by nearly 98%. It's only at its most effective when sung live." Naru tells you, pointing at her screen. "See this value? That's the control value with a standard audio recorder. It can't pick up or detect Fold waves, much less record them. But here in this facility, we have the capability to actually record and store fold wave data in conjunction with the audio data."

"So you're saying you can theoretically make a song recording as powerful as if Amy was actually singing." You conclude.

"C-correct!" Naru nods. "This should provide us lots of valuable data for future projects- oh no!"

Naru squeaks and covers her mouth.

"S-sorry, I think I said too much!"

"Don't worry, you were on a roll there." You smile warmly. "It looked like you were really enjoying yourself there!"

"H-hah, I guess." Naru shifts nervously. "B-but telling all this is a bit risky...."

Looks like you were getting to her. She just need one more nudge to put her over the top, but what would you do to achieve that...?

But we'll go with Doro to the next concert.

>>Offer a kiss.

For the mission.

We're gonna have to find an apology/celebratory gift by the end of this conflict.

I'm pretty sure "hook her up for the next concert" means getting her free tickets or something. We're not hooking up *with* her.
>>
>>2726779
You know we will bump into her and everyone will be awkward.
Also just getting her a ticket doesn't mesh well with the seduction route we've taken.

"You know." You grin as you nod to Amy behind the glass, who was singing a song. You couldn't tell which, since the test chamber was apparently soundproof. "I can pretty much guarantee you'd get tickets to every one of Amy's concerts for life, if that's something you're interested in."

"Really?!" Naru's eyes shine. Guess Amy's appeal even reached this secret base.

Naru's then pauses and her face goes red again.

"S-sorry! It's just a purely academic interest!" She says defensively. "Y-you know, it's not like I've picked up an interest after analyzing sound recordings for weeks on end..."

"Purely academic. Of course." You smile and wink. "So how about it?"

Naru's yes dart from side to side, quickly noting the locations of her colleagues and Karla, who were busy watching Amy do her thing. Meanwhile, you could see the gray cylinders quiver and vibrate in response to her singing.

"You see, the boosters we're calibrating not only enhance Fold waves, but record them as well." Naru whispers. "This means that theoretically, with enough data samples, you could synthesize a completely new song that would retain the same Fold properties as a live performed one! Well, theoretically, at least."

"So Amy's not just being used to calibrate these things, but her voice is being recorded." You scowl.

"That's the gist of it." Naru nods. "But again, it's all basically theoretical at this point."

Wait, so they're trying to make fold-capable Hatsune Miku?

You frown. This whole thing felt pretty shady, but it sounded harmless enough. You suppose it was just Collier indulging herself in her obsession with science. Either way, there wasn't much that could be done about it now.

"Thanks for talking with me, Naru." You grin as you pat her on the shoulder. "I'll make sure you have an in next time Amy has a gig."

"Haaaaah, thanks." Naru smiles. "O-oh no! It looks like they're finished!"

Naru quickly spins around to face her workstation again as she taps her fingers furiously on the keyboard to look busy.

"All right, there we go! We've got all the data we needed!" Karla says cheerfully as she saunters over to you. "We'll have these boosters and the cloaking devices shipped over to the fleet in no time! In the meantime, I suppose you can take Amy back in your Valkyrie, unless you want to stick around until the transport arrives?"

Well, part of you just wanted to get yourself and Amy the hell out of this place and as far as away as possible. On the other hand, staying here a little longer could give you the opportunity to learn more about this place...

>Better get Amy and go.

"I think I'll take Amy back to the fleet." You tell Karla.

"Of course. Have a safe trip! I'll catch up with you later!" Karla smiles as the security door opens and Amy steps out, quickly taking up position next to you.

"FINALLY." Amy rolls her eyes. "We can get outta here! Damn place gives me the creeps."

You manage to catch sight of Naru and wink at her. She gives a happy wave as you leave.

"So, you find out what evil plot Karla is up to?" Amy asks as the two of you ride the elevator back up to the hangar level.

"Just recording your voice, apparently." You shrug. "Didn't sound like anything too dangerous so i didn't dig any deeper."

"Huh." Amy just sighs and crosses her arms. "So how did the meeting with the bigwigs go, anyways?"

"We were able to secure some reinforcements. Not a lot, but it certainly helps." You explain.

"And what about the Admiral?" Amy continues.

"First thing she did was make a beeline back to the fleet." You chuckle.

"Hah, sounds just like her." Amy nods.

And so the two of you board your Valkyrie and take off, leaving behind this dead planet as you headed back to the fleet... and Dorothea.
