"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon

Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’ Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine.

'Jack' Marcus Slain while retaking the North Tower, his sacrifice saved his squad and perhaps the Company.

Recap

Five days ago your dread employer, the Necromancer, said that he would arrive to relieve the Company and others under siege at Kresden in three days. Four days ago the Free Alliance began their assaults in earnest, an endless wave of Neumunster Legions, Chevalisse Banners, Helenwood support units and more. There is still no sign of the Necromancer or his undead army.

For five days the Black Company has held out. Time and time again, when the line was faltering and the walls breached, you led the 7th Kreigstrom Platoon from the front and turned back the tide. It has been the harshest fight you’ve experience while leading a whole platoon, and it has not been kind to you or your people. You have lost new friends and lifelong comrades with each passing day. The price of victory after victory has been steep, not least being your immortal soul.
The powers and unholy might you have gleaned from your dark pacts and broken oaths have given you the strength to win time and time again, to tear apart the greatest heroes of the Alliance sent to slay you. And to protect your own men, as much as you can, from the cold clutches of death. Last night you lead the Kriegstrom to victory over the Highlanders, cementing their reputation as the greatest fighting force on the continent, and perhaps the world.

But you are not the same man. You do not laugh at SGT ‘Bad Hands’ bawdy jests any longer, you do not fret over CPL Saint’s future or flirt badly with Captain ‘Kiranova’. You have never been more crucial to the Captain than now, and you have never felt more distant from her. You are surprised you even care about mortal qualms like that. You have no need of food or drink, nor do you seek the company of your fellow man. You are Lieutenant ‘Prince’, the Black Prince of the Company. You are what the Black Company needs right now to live another day. A monster.

In the dead of night you have embarked on a daring raid into the heart of the Free Alliance siege camp, yourself and a coven of vampires carried by the adolescent dragon Asgorga. Even the children’s stories never covered anything as outlandish as this. Now you have infilitrated the camp, the vampires run amok as the slaughter the sleeping and ill-armed mortals. Yourself, Mask and Cairsun the Morning Light have a more focused task. You aim to confront the thinker of the Free Alliance, the retired Neumunster commander Helmer dan Gorst, and pay him back for handing the Black Company a stunning defeat at Oxenfurt Bridge. To avenge your fallen brothers. Or to cut a deal with the man…

Day 5, Kresden, ’The Puking Paladin Inn’, Very Early

The drinking and raucous party making of those mercenaries on short-leave continued from the moment the last Highlander Clansman fell until well into the night. After a day like yesterday, everyone was drinking. Even a few Ajiyimad teetotallers had been seen to take a sip or two from a flask when offered. It reached the point where more than one officer was concerned that the men would be ‘under the weather’ the next day, a mercenary phrase for being so hungover as to be combat ineffective.

But no one had fought harder than the Black Company 7th Kriegstrom that day, and no officer was about to try and order the Black Prince’s Own away from their cups and cards without the monster himself giving the command. Normally, such a lack of oversight would see half the town aflame and the other half looted within a few hours. But sheer fatigue and commiseration with their fellow survivors of the day has left the 7th Platoon in an altogether more somber mood. Half the tables in this establishment are still in one piece.

”To ‘Jack’.” LCPL Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster raises her mug with the other members of 2nd Squad. ”The finest Corporal the 7th Kriegstrom ever had.”

>>2726176

”Na’am, Just-Corporal was great many Just-Corporal.” Trooper Nissar Belhamun’s faith would normally prohibit him from partaking in the toast, but he has never been the most religious of fellows except when it suited him.

”His leadership shifted the odds of our survival 33% in our favour.” The Wildborn Trooper ‘Smiles’ grumbles, lifting a mug that might better be described as a cask to the toast.

”…” Corporal ‘Hard’ Hida says nothing at first, but nods and raises her glass all the same. ”And to Trooper Vendis Durvano. One for the annals.”

”One for the annals.” They all echo the phrase with another toast.

”We Wildborn do not believe in an afterlife but, if there is a remote possibility of one… it would be fitting that Trooper Durvano had better luck with the cards and dice there than he did here.” The hulking scarred brute ‘Smiles’ looks uncomfortable at the attention from the rest of the table, he rarely speaks this much.

”I am never did ask what is ‘sea dog’. It is my ear scary. Am much prefer when he says ‘matey’.” Nissar frowns, not understanding why LCPL ‘Joker’ chuckles at that.

”He… *hiccup* He…” ‘Joker’ sniffs, rubbing the eye on the burned side of her face. Sometimes it itches and leaks. ”H-he… he was my frieeend.” The newly-minted Lance-Corporal breaks down completely into sobs, Nissar and Smiles both try to console her with the expected level of awkwardness Mercs exhibit when dealing with emotion.

Corporal ‘Hard’ Hida is not watching, she has her eyes on a situation developing a few tables over.

The new Skald Troopers, Utred Horst and Hans Rusti, they’ve dragged Lokrey ‘Brittle’ and his bandaged arm over to another table full of Black Company troopers. 4th Platoon Infantry. The Skalds are laughing and as boisterous as ever, not understanding the bad blood between the 7th Kreigstrom Shocktroopers and the 4th Infantry. Trooper Lokrey Brittle knows though, and he looks extremely nervous being forced to take a seat between a half-a-dozen glowering Troopers.

[/red]”Her, her ... vi drikker venn!”[/red] Hans Rusti slaps an infantryman on the shoulder cheerfully. The returning scowl does not deter him.

”He uh… he says we should make a toast.” Trooper Brittle mumbles miserably.

”Oh really?” A Lance-Corporal with skin almost as dark as their uniform mutters dangerously. She lifts her mug to the Skald. ”To whom, Krieger?”

” Til vår store leder Prince! Mest kjente kriger!” Hans Rusti laughs, going for another hearty slap. Utred Horst grabs his hand, stopping him, even in his drunk state he has noticed the murderous mood at the table. Not quickly enough to stop Lokrey ‘Brittle’ translating, pausing from taking a handful of the dubiously mixed nuts at the center of the table. He seems more concerned at the angry stares than he does at his bandaged hand bleeding again.

”Um…. To er I think… Lieutenant Prince?”

It is too late for CPL ‘Hard’ Hida to step in when everything goes to Below.

”Aye… to Lieutenant Prince.” The leather-skinned LCPL from the 4th doesn't quite spit the words as she flicks her dreadlocks over her neck and smiles at her fellow infantrymen. "To the Captain’s monstrous little pet…”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

”Oops. Guess we should be finding a classier establishment.” The LCPL purposefully spills her drink on the floor. The 7th Kriegstrom throw the first punch.

”This is for LT Hawk!” The Lance-Corporal shatters her glass. 7th Kriegstrom is not at fault, but the fight takes a much more lethal turn.

”Oops. Guess we should be finding a classier establishment.” The LCPL purposefully spills her drink on the floor in front of the entire tavern, her fellows without hesitation empty their cups as well. A crestfallen barmaid looks on.

Even the inebriated Trooper Hans Rusti cannot miss the intended insult. His face scrunches in rage as a grabs the front of the offending LCPL’s collar, his fist swung back for a powerful blow. The LCPL isn’t nearly as drunk as him, sending him flying over her shoulder and the table with no small amount of skill.
Utred Horst, being the Skald he is, does not leave his companion to fight alone and throws a punch aimed at the side of her head. He misses, the LCPL being a fast little thing, and before he can throw another he is tackled by three different 4th Platoon infantrymen.

Within moments the Puking Paladin becomes a battlefield as tables, chairs and various pieces of cutlery go flying. One does not join the Kreigstrom without enjoying getting ‘stuck in’ as it were, and the members of 7th Platoon throw themselves into the fight against the 4th Infantry with glee. The 4th outnumber the Kreigstrom and are not afraid of ganging up against their opponents, but frankly the Kriegers are just more vicious and gung-ho than the infantrymen. They are the elite after all and, after slaughtering the Highlander Clansmen mere hours ago, they have the hard-earned reputation of being the greatest mortal fighting force in the world.

Knight-of-the-Line ‘Spitfire’ Spicario has to physically restrain the recovering ‘Pelt’ Untergrenn from chewing off the face of a confused and alarmed 2nd Platoon Ranger while Lance-Corporal’s Lerrek Jurgensen and ‘Murder’ Meriam tag team an unfortunate 4th Platoon infantryman. His buddy makes a grab at Spicario, but she fends him off with an elbow to the face. ”Merde! Can’t a girl enjoy a glass of Chevalisse Red around here?!”

CPL Hirstun of Ligh, showing off his golden eagle to a pretty young lass with a thing for older men, switches to using it as a quarterstaff in an instant. More than one brawler comes face to face with the Eagle of the Legio III in a literal meaning of the phrase, and his remaining ‘Dozen’ are more than happy to have a good old fashioned brawl to finish off the day.

The dreadlocked Lance-Corporal of the 4th Infantry clearly got her position for something other than coming sense as, after decking the unfortunate Trooper Lokrey ‘Brittle’, she throws an ineffective punch into her next opponent. This happens to be the looming Trooper ‘Smiler’, he growls as the fist patters of his chest. The LCPL, cradling a probably-broken wrist, is promptly sent flying out of the Puking Paladin window. Thankfully, it was just the first floor and Smiles had estimated a low likelihood of lethal results from her speed and trajectory into the glass and then pavement.

[2/3]

Eventually Corporal ‘Saint’ arrives upon the scene, her armored figure dramatically slamming the door aside. As commanding as any officer, some of the outringers to the fight actual cease and step back. Most ignore however, and the ongoing brawl quickly incites Saints ire.

”Listen up, maggots!” Saint screams, her corrupted Nightblade shearing straight through a table thrown at her. That gets everyone’s attention, though Nissar does sneak in one last punch to a 4th infantryman he and Schuster have in a headlock. What follows is typical and terrifying officer-class dressing down of the room though, Saint not having the knack for the more gruesome threats, is restricted to regular disciplinary action rather than promises of personal violence.

There have been the occasional brawls between Troopers this campaign, and the annals do include instances of Platoon rivalries forming and fading over time. But in living memory . Thankfully despite serious injury to several Troopers, mainly 4th Infantry or unfortunate bystanders, none of the wounds appear to be fatal. The 7th Kreigstrom will be in the Captain’s shitlist for a while, no doubt about that. But at least no one died as a result of the spontaneous violence. No one the Black Company cares about anyway.

The Black Prince, The Free Alliance Siege Camp

For the most part, every soul you meet along the way to Helmer dan Gorst’s area of command is too busy running away to impede your progress much.

Are we under attack? Why won’t they die? Where’s the silver? How did they get past our piquet lines?

These are questions that occur to those that have time to think about anything other than sheer survival as the bloodthirsty vampire coven tears into the disorganised and panicking encampment. The few foolhardy and brave knots of resistance that try to deter you are cut down by Mask and Cairsun the Morning Light in quick succession. You have drawn your sword, as you are not an idiot, but you have yet to even use it.

Behind you, the night erupts into a fiery holocaust as Asgorga makes his presence known to the western-most parts of the encampment. Whether it was pure chance or he specifically targeted the Chevalisse stables out of ire for their previous attack is not known to you, but the animals screeches and smell of burning horseflesh are quickly made prominent.

The Command Tent is not far ahead and you can hear the shouting of orders rather than alarm. Your target is near but the vampires, as expected, have gotten carried away with the slaughter and are spread throughout the encampment as the devour the weak and ill-armed victims first.

------------------------------------

>Do not pause in your advance, Mask and Cairsun can hold off the Command Tent guards long enough for you to get inside and finish the job. [Courage]

>Waste no time, making the best of the vampiric distraction. Only Mask and Cairsun can keep up with you for the assault. Only them you trust. [Experience]

>Press on quickly, most of the vampires are running amok. You can bring your Knight-of-the-Line, and perhaps Lord Lorgia and some of the more disciplined Blood Knights will listen. [Elite]

>Regroup and push forward. The Command Tent will be the most obvious target. You need to gather as many vampiric minions as possible for the assault itself. [Clever]

From your previous roll with Asgorga you will retain the Got the Jump Bonus for the first round regardless of your choice

Ah, yikes. I still haven't brought out a full breakdown of combat have I?

To be perfectly honest, this is completely homebrew. The trick is assigning a relatively unbroken (or broken, really) DC bonus then naming it so that it reflects the choices or gains of the players.

If anons had leaned towards a pure Kreigstrom or Officer route then there would be a lot less grimdark sounding but still have similar DC benefits. Albeit not as broken and for Officer most of the benefits would be to orders or Platoon Combat perks.
>>
>>2726543
Makes sense. I was wondering about trying my hand at a similar combat perk style, so I was curious how much of a method behind the madness there was.

The unkillable Mask having to roll on the casualty table would have been entertaining, I'm sure.

---------------------------------------

You and your companions slow your pace as you come across a body of Free Alliance in front of the Command Tent. With some much activity it is impossible to tell which of them are fleeing and which will stand their ground, but you can certainly see some Elven Crossbowmen, Chevalisse Knights and perhaps half a platoon of Neumunster Legionnaires that are being led by a few would-be heroes that at least look like they know what they’re doing.

A foppishly dressed vampire rips out of a nearby tent and charges forward, bloodcrazed and still ravenous.

”Steady, sons of Helenwood!” The elven officer has his crossbowmen in two lines; one kneeling, one standing and one reloading. ”Don’t fire till you see the red of his eyes! Ready…Fire!”

With practiced efficiency the crossbowmen unleash their full volley into the charging idiot bloodsucker. That volley would have slowed a Vampire even with their nigh-immortality, but to your surprise the creature shrieks and bursts into ash, their clothes and ‘armour’ clattering on the ground.

They can afford silver crossbow bolts? No, they’ve merely the removed the tip and sharpened the wood. Clever. You’re not one for complimenting the knife-ears, but that does take a certain sort of ingenuity. Helmer dan Gorst can’t be far.

You are unstoppable.

Knight-of-the-Line Mask takes the lead at first, crossbow bolt after bolt sinking into him and achieving nothing. Those bolts that do pierce his ancient armour find nothing but unliving flesh and bone underneath, any vital organs such as a heart have rotten away. Even so, under that kind of volley the Red Undead should have at least staggered yet he pushes on, the peculiar purple glow from earlier emanating from amplifying his regenerative abilities to an astonishing degree.

”Releasing 3rd Article Ward, Hex Tempestas!” The novice mage practically screams at your charge, a cold wind rushing up from beneath his feet. But wielding magik requires confidence and a steady mind, even the rules-bound sort of the Mages. His rushed incantation and runes flicker and falter, the tempest blowing in every direction. This only adds to the fear and confusion of the defenders.

The gaggle of men and elves are taken aback at Mask’s seeming invulnerability, giving you and Cairsun the perfect opportunity to leap in and begin carving through the enemy with your magik weapons. The mortals scatter like a herd of frightened prey animals. Those that do not flee from your grim visage are frozen to the spot, cut down like wheat in a harvest. Their armour, flesh and bone parts before your blades like butter. In all your life you have never killed with such ease as you do then, even when your targets had been asleep. A golden ethereal chain lashes out at your arm, turning your lethal swing against the slippery elf major into a merely brutally crushing one. You tense, sending a surge of Black energy down to meet the gold. It shatters with barely any effort.

”I cannot hold him!” The Chevalisse Paladin shouts ”The binds… he’s too powerful!”

You need not shout, nor scream nor even say a word. Elven and human soldiers, veterans of wars against the Warlord, Wild King and Undead each of them, falter and flee before your approach. Their courage fails them and they run before you, wailing with eyes white with terror.

”To me, men of the Empire! Together now, against the darkness!” The Neumunster Captain ducks as the elven Major is sent flying over him, crashing into the ranks of his own elven arbalests. They break, and the Neumunster soldiers break with them. ”No! Stand fast! Stand now, together! Do not give in to fear!”

But he is alone, there are none so brave or foolish enough to stand beside him.

Gank the Magik user first. It’s what they taught you in Black Company Basic and you see no good reason to ignore it now as you draw your pistol and fire upon the Mage.

The Mage, in his terror, wastes no time with the usual safeguards. In the nick of time his teleportation ritual activates and carries him off far away. Hopefully a thousand feet in the air or to the bottom of the ocean. He didn’t go alone either, the Captain is teleported away with the Mage as well. Or, more specifically, the entire left half of him is teleported, give or take a leg and a head. You are treated to an enlightening vivisection of the Neumenster Captain before he collapses, in too much shock to do much of anything except stare at his missing left side in abject horror.

Your musketball flies straight through the space where the Mage occupied a moment ago to plow into the chest of the elven Major still picking himself up from the dirt. The unfortunate elf is, if you’re honest, the target you may have been aiming for all along. Even in your new form you cannot get past some of your old prejudices. Part of you is still in there, even the racist bits.

Victorious, you leave Mask and Cairsun to mop up as you make your way towards the command tent. You are stopped suddenly in your tracks, a golden intangible chain is looped around your neck. The Paladin is straining with every fibre in his mortal body and the links of the chain are already straining but, even against the monstrous strength of darkness incarnate, he holds.

”Not today,Démon Diabolique!”The holy warrior hisses through gritted teeth, his feet making furroughs in the dirt. ”Not while I still draw breath!”

There was a time when the courage of mortal men impressed you. Now you’re just annoyed.

Since I don't know if I'll be up when we meet Helmer, I'll just remind Anons that if we can come up with a deal to lift over this damn siege, we can use what we know about the Necromancer's identity as bargaining chip.

Just a possibility we have.

this entire raid was supposed to break the siege, they may have more men than us us but the Kresdens defenders have delivered a great number of terrors and all manner of butchery upon them, we have crushed two legions all manner of would

It's been a loooong trend in this quest - once we started to appreciate just how hard combat is, we started pursuing the route of stacking bonuses on bonuses ad infinitum, all in the name of self preservation. It just never happened in other shit quite like our ability to hit things in the teeth.

Your hand wraps around the golden chain lassoed around your neck, blackened gauntlets hissing as they grasp the wards of Holy Binding. Slowing, inevitably, you drag the foolhardy Paladin ever closer to you. Another tug with your free hand, then wrapping your arm around more of the chain you pull again. The Paladin struggles and strains against your overwhelming strength, but his faith and mortal efforts are not match for your inexorable might.

Within moments the Paladin is within arms reach. Before he can lower the binding and bring his sword to bear your blade licks out and neatly decapitates him. The severed head rolls to your feet, where bone, flesh and steel visor are all crushed under the heel of your boot.

Without fanfare Mask finishes off the wounded Neumunster Captain with a mechanical stroke. The grounds outside the Command Tent are completely abandoned. Within moments the three of you have reduced the most obvious knot of resistance to a charnel house. To the west fires continue to rage, the clamour of screams and shouts occasionally broken by the snarl of a vampire or the thunderous roar of Asgorga. You glance at Mask and Cairsun the Morning Light, they stand by awaiting further orders. You wonder how much of a Free Alliance there will be left after tonight.

”Let’s be done with this.” They nod, following you into the gloomy command tent.

Only one torch inside remains lit, illuminating the wizened figure slumped in a chair at a table covered in maps and scattered pieces indicating one army or the other. Even a cursory glance paints a very bleak picture for the Free Alliance, knocked over models to the South-West indicate that the Warlord has been making as many gains in Chevalisse as your Employer has in the Empire.

With a shocked start you realise that beared robed figure is the Archmage, the centrepiece of the Free Alliance’s magik resources. You’ve almost begun to recharge the Magic Runes on your blade when you notice the unnatural slump, limp hands and gaping mouth. There is not a mark on him, but the Archmage is very much dead, a reassurance that even has you let out a non-breath of relief. To his side is another figure is slumped over the desk, figurines scattered and a pool of blood spilt out over some of the map from the knife in their neck. The General. This is not a recent occurrence, the blood has already started to dry.

”He wouldn’t drink.” You whip around at the sound of the voice, Mask’s blade is already at their throat. Helmer dan Gorst carries on unconcerned. ”The poison that is. It would have been…. Easier if he did.” He says this last, looking at his own blood smeared hands.

"Funny... that the all-powerful Archmage would trust me to poor him a drink where my old friend wouldn't."

At Oxenfurt he beat you, fair and square. While you were busy securing Kresden as you had been ordered, Helmer dan Gorst took full advantage of your Employer’s lack of strategic expertise to catch the Black Company and much of the undead host on both sides of the banks of Oxenfurt. A lot of brothers died that day, and more so on the long retreat to the only secure location for miles. Kresden.

This is war, and brothers are bound to die all the time, but perhaps so many wouldn’t have died if someone less competent than Helmer dan Gorst had been in command. Your hands curl around the hilt of Claíomh Na Sléibhte

”Come to finish the job, Black Prince?” There is little in the way of spite from the old war hero. He seems entirely resigned.

”So much for the brotherhood of the Free Alliance. Why kill your own?” You rasp, prodding the corpses of the Archmage with your sword. These days you cannot tell whether you are speaking in mortal or Blacktongue.

”Why? Because the Archmage was a threat. Because the General would never have agreed to what was offered. Because of a great many things.” Helmer dan Gorst looks up from his bloody hands for the first time, his eyes narrowing at you. ”But mostly, I suspect, to see whether I would do as I was told.”
The torch flickers, but for it the only light in the room is the dull orange glow of Cairsun the Morning Light’s sword and the light green runes of your own. You can feel the rush of Power as a very . Helmer dan Gorst shudders, the Archmage twitches and the torch goes out.

Mask does not hesitate in the face of the unexpected attack, moving to slit the throat of Helmer dan Gorst. Without explanation the ancient undead warrior slams into the ground with unexpected ferocity, as if a very large hand had swatted him into the ground.

Cairsun moves to step in your way against this unknown assailant but sinks to his knees, choking. Shadows have become solid tendrils, wrapping themselves around his legs, arms, chest and throat. You remain unaffected, your sword drawn and poised to strike down the Archmage as he rises to his feet, staggering awkwardly. Their eyes remain blank, their mouth sagging between words.

”I MUst apoLOGISE for my ABRUPt entrANCE, PrincE OF DArk. THe maN THINg will NOT BE harmeD, I DO Not perMIT IT.” The voice reminds you of scraping of steel against a whetstone, you are discomforted but Helmer dan Gorst clearly find the sound much more unbearable than that. Both he and Cairsun wince openly, their breaths ragged and short. Mask remains utterly still. ”Ahhhhhh, I SEE You are CONFUsed. plEASE, Allow mE TO PRoperlY GREEt you… iN PERSon.”

The Archmage steps back, his hands clutching at his face. A pitch black hand erupts from their throat, straining to extract itself. The Archmage, or rather their corpse, obliges. With inhuman strength their rip apart their mouth and face entirely. The sight is easily as disturbing as what you witnessed in Far Sut Rus and Sarsburg, but this time you have no fear of losing your lunch. You don’t need to eat.

Soon the creature has entirely erupted from its vessel.

You had seen your Employer before, of a sorts, via Page #136’s possession. But not since you handed over the Skarling heir, not like this. The rush of Power from his arrival is like standing too close to a furnace, you wince at the heat for want of a better word. The Necromancer is well on his way down the path to Ascension, where the line between powerful being and minor-deity begins to blur. Caleb the First Man, Wildborn Dies-from-Dragonfire, the Wild King and all the Saints and more were once this mighty. And perhaps not even them.

”you haVE DONe well, YOU ANd your FELLOw mortALS.” The Necromancer’s looming figure, impossibly tall in the confines of the tent, speaking with an unerring and jarring manner. The unnatural nature of the creature is too much to simply accept.

You feel a sudden urge and insane urge to test yourself against this monster, to see how strong you really are. The sensation is almost as strong as the urge to kneel.

>2 Success
>Your Employer will explain his delay.
>He gives no gifts, but will provide an opportunity. A bargain.

Three days. That’s how long the Necromancer said he would be before the Siege of Kresden began. The Black Company and the rest only had to hold on for three days at the most before relief came.

If your Employer had done what he had said he would, if he had kept his word, Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus would still be alive. Trooper Vendis Durvano would still be alive. You would not have had to descrate your own fallen. You would not have had to hang LT ‘Hawk’ of the 4th Infantry, whose only crime was caring for his own men. So many more brothers in black would still be alive. And you, maybe you would not have had to become this thing in order to ensure the rest survived.

”You’re late.” You do not cower, you stand defiant in the face of his overwhelming aura of terror. Even without that mess during the Sack of Sarsburg, he and his sister have much to answer for.

”I MAKE no excUSES, Nor neeD PROVide onE.” The Necromancer dismisses your anger. ”IT TOOk longER THAn expected To compLETE The rituAL FOR my posSESSIOns to The easT TO BE turneD. LONGEr stilL to movE THEM here AND ENcircle THOSE who deFY ME.”
”Everyone?” Helmer dan Gorst whispers in horror. ”Is everyone east of here is now…”

”not prECISEly, moRTAL.” The Necromancer turns his visage on the Neumunster war hero and traitor. The man practically shrinks into himself under the monster’s gaze. ”everyTHING has beEN TURned to SERVE me. the PEOPLe in the TOWNS, the liVESTOck in tHE FIElds, thE BIRDs in thE SKY And the ANIMAls in thE WOODs. all sERVE Me now.”

That’s… terrifying doesn’t quite do it justice. From what your Employer says the better half of the Neumunster Empire is now occupied solely by the undead. You wonder if the Employer made any distinction between those provinces that switched sides, like Tassenland, and those provinces that continued to defy him. You doubt it.

”Lord Prince, the bloodbags are starting to regroup. We should…” Lord Lorgia freezes at the tents entrance before the scene, the sound of battle and shouted orders behind him. After a moments hesitation, he prostates himself before the Necromancer. ”My Master….”

”MORE InterrUPTIOns? i tiRE OF This… rESISTance.” The Necromancer casts out an unnaturally elongated hand and the wave of Power unleased is staggering, but invisible. Lord Lorgia visibly shudders at the demonstration. For a moment nothing happens, you wonder if your Employer has cast a spell of concealment over the tent. Then the screams begin.

There is no scattering or intermittent start in the horror, in one moment what sounds like the entirety of the Free Alliance encampment erupts into agonized screams. The screams and hollers last for roughly a minute, then cease in unison. But the shuffle of feet continues, the march of many thousands of feet in perfect unity. You glance at Helmer dan Gorst and Cairsun the Morning Light, they seem unaffected. You feel no pressing need to go outside and see just what exactly has happened.

”AT LASt, no moRE DIStractIONS.” The Necromancer nods contentedly, a disturbingly human motion on such an inhuman figure. ”i have WATCHed you FOR SOme timE, PRINce of tHE BLAck COMPAny. It HAS TAKen me sOME Time to REALIse what DRIVEs you iN YOUR searcH FOR Power.”

“FIVE years FROM Now, I wILL HAve neeD OF YOur serVICES once AGAIN. SWEAR To me thAT YOU will hEED MY call aND SERve me fOR A PEriod oF ONE Year. DO THIs and i shall BRING anyonE YOU CAre to NAME back fROM THe realM OF THe dead. but onLY ONE.”

You scoff at the offer, what your Employer brings back from the dead is never the same as what came before. You don’t want a brother raised as a revenant following you around, that sounds like torture rather than a gift. It’s been hard enough not looking in the direction of your own brothers in black who were raised during this siege.

”I SEE YOu doubT ME. IT is undERSTANDable.” The Necromancer sighs, impatient. ”BEFORe even I WOULD have queSTIONED the possiBILITY. But noW, NOTHing is BEYONd me. if i SO CHOOSE, I can reSTORE a mortAL SOUl to it’s ORIGInal stATE ENtirely, wiTHOUT even tHE SLIghtest TRACE of corRUPTION.”

”I’ll run it by the Captain.” You try to hide it, but your hesitation is obvious. Anyone? For 5 years in the service of this thing, you can bring back a brother or sister of the Company back from the dead. Really back, not a ghoul or a revenant. But alive and whole.

”THE CAptain WILL Say no.” The Necromancer has no face, but you can hear the smile. ”I OFFer thiS BUT Once, pRINCE. on my nAME I will NOT COmmand YOU TO do anyTHING that mAY BRIng harM TO THe compANY, DIrectly OR INDirectly.”

If you ignore him, and the Captain refuses… well accepting his offer would be disobeying orders. You’d be deserter, a traitor even. You know he’s right, this is your only opportunity to accept. What you wouldn’t give to see one of your fallen comrades again… It’s almost a relief, you were afraid you didn’t even care anymore.

And a lot can happen in 5 years. 5 years from now you and the Company could be a continent away, and the Necromancer would not be the first all-powerful being you have broken your oaths to. Or maybe you’ll do as your told, keep your head down and serve your year. For the return of a lost comrade… it may be worth it.

> ”You really can bring someone back? Mind, body and soul as they were before? Anyone I name?”
> The Necromancer has something in mind, his terms are too precise. Ask for more details on this future job.

I think this is the best choice. Other than fitting the whole 'Everything for my men and the Company' mentality Prince has, it salvages part of his humanity. It's almost sure we'll choose Kid, and I'm happy with that. It might not undo what happened, but Saint won't hate Kiranova as much, Herr Doctor won't hate Prince as much, and Prince might even feel more at peace. That said, more info is always a good thing.

Now, some might say 'What about the Captain?'. Honestly, I think we have good chances to convince her: Prince saved the Company in the capital, performed beyond expectations, carried the Company through the siege, took two Eagles and killed the Highlanders. If Kiranova can't accept what is a glorified temporary leave, then fuck her (and I'm a Kiranovafag, mind you).

Second, can we trust the Necromancer? Dude hasn't the best record when it comes to the Company, but I don't he's malicious towards it or he wouldn't have offered to let it go after Kresden. Assuming he knew about Syka's plans, the Company was simply expendable.
He doesn't care about it except for Prince, now that he's some sort of Great Power. So I think that he won't try to undermine the Company in the future unless provoked, so it just needs to stay away from him.

>wanting to break with the company for ANY reason
How is it breaking off? It would service for a single year, and we can convince Kiranova to let us go. Or we can break another oath with another supernatural entity.
>wanting to leave the Kriegstrom without our guidance
Had you chosen the last Officer Perk? Maybe you would have had a point.
>wanting to potentially drag the company/Kriegstrom/whoever we bring back into whatever below madness the Necromancer is going to bring unto the mortal realms
Already mentioned it would be just Prince, and the Company should move half a continent away in any case - the dead don't give jobs to mercenaries.
>wanting to side with the necromancer AGAIN
Irrelevant. Our previous deal with the Necromancer didn't hurt Prince or the Company, and generally we never gave a shit about morality.
>>

>”The Captain will say no. No it is then.” [Elite] + [Clever]

Once in the company, always in the company.
>>
>>2731661
>Did you ask them?
Did you? we rez Kidd or jenny opr anyone else they don't have anywhere else to go chnaces are they are going to back in the ground just as badly sticking with the company especially if we go into the hellstorm the necromancer probably wants us for.

>How is it breaking off? It would service for a single year, and we can convince Kiranova to let us go. Or we can break another oath with another supernatural entity.
we are explicitly taking a contract outside of our duty as an officer of the company and our duty to it, we don't get to say where the company goes so if they are on the other side of the world when we go they won't follow which means we essentially break with the company to do whatever the necromancer wants.

>Had you chosen the last Officer Perk? Maybe you would have had a point.
regardless of that perk we are a murder machine that carves the way for Kriegstrom to do what they do best, we dissapear and while the may be good they don't have our murder machine bullshit to help them out when things get dicy, chances are they'll be thrown into more dicey shit now that they have a reputation for being the best which means we should be there

>Already mentioned it would be just Prince, and the Company should move half a continent away in any case - the dead don't give jobs to mercenaries.
that was entirely not the point the point is unless we break with the company we drag it right back into necromancers buisness which likely means a shitshow worse than all of this campaign

>Irrelevant. Our previous deal with the Necromancer didn't hurt Prince or the Company, and generally we never gave a shit about morality.
Bullshit, people have already had issues siding with necromancer contract or no and the work done for him has already cost prince heavily body and soul.

So your argument is pure, dumb luck. Not sound at all.

And you ignored the fact that we can convince Kiranova to basically lease Prince for a year or just flip the bird at the Necromancer.
regardless of that perk we are a murder machine that carves the way for Kriegstrom to do what they do best
First off, the Kriegstrom are deadly as they are already. Second, I doubt the Company will take hard jobs for a while after this campaign, so no dicey situations. Third, if Kiranova knows Prince won't be around in a precise year, she'll avoid difficult jobs in that timeframe.
that was entirely not the point the point is unless we break with the company we drag it right back into necromancers buisness which likely means a shitshow worse than all of this campaign
Eh, what? It was stated here >>2730668 that just Prince is needed. The Company is going to stay away from this supposed shitshow.
> Bullshit, people have already had issues siding with necromancer
People have issues because they see him as untrustworthy, not because of morals. Also, if not for his previous pact Prince would be a dead man walking so once could argue it was actually beneficial to him. Blame Tara and nat 100s instead.
>>
>>2731786
>So your argument is pure, dumb luck. Not sound at all.
no better than yours which is massive risk for a reward that won't do much good by all odds and relies on a lot of if's.

>And you ignored the fact that we can convince Kiranova to basically lease Prince for a year or just flip the bird at the Necromancer.
which is litreally the other option

>First off, the Kriegstrom are deadly as they are already. Second, I doubt the Company will take hard jobs for a while after this campaign, so no dicey situations.
thats a big if thats betting that the company won't accept the coin and the company being a mercenary company will always accept coin if its enough, that being said even with hedging bets the companys bread and butter is war and war always has casulties.

>Third, if Kiranova knows Prince won't be around in a precise year, she'll avoid difficult jobs in that timeframe.
again an if complications don't arise and if prince isn't needed which I admit is kinda iffy but still an if

>Eh, what? It was stated here >>2730668 that just Prince is needed. The Company is going to stay away from this supposed shitshow.
again that involves us breaking with the company

>People have issues because they see him as untrustworthy, not because of morals. Also, if not for his previous pact Prince would be a dead man walking so once could argue it was actually beneficial to him
people have issues with the entire throwing humanity back in the mud thing the necromancer seems to heading towards on whatever unholy crusade he has which is essentially a moral problem. the pact is only saves us so much from cyka and there's nothing to stop her from trying to shank us if we return to his employ.
>>
>>2731797
> thats a big if thats betting that the company won't accept the coin and the company being a mercenary company will always accept coin if its enough.
The Company is what, half of what it was once? A third? They will have to replenish their strength, and difficult missions aren't going to help with that. Not to mention that the men need a break after this. Kiranova might be ruthless, but she's not going to let her men hate her for no reason.
> again that involves us breaking with the company
Again, we can convince Kiranova to work for the Necromancer for a single year. Then we go back to the Company for life - literally. It's not breaking unless she declares so.
> people have issues with the entire throwing humanity back in the mud thing the necromancer seems to heading towards on whatever unholy crusade he has which is essentially a moral problem.
Not really? Except a few white knights, people fears backstabs and not the undead scourge itself.
> the pact is only saves us so much from cyka and there's nothing to stop her from trying to shank us if we return to his employ.
Let us be honest, if Black Prince could take on a not-boosted Necromancer I doubt Syka is going to be a huge issue.

I'm going to call it here guys, next thread will focus on the aftermath of the Necromancer's victory and Black Company licking their wounds and celebrating. >>
>>2734725
I don't think Prince would, but the Black Prince just might since he feels so cut off from his humanity and his Company.

It wouldn't even really be a sacrifice, since he would only be gone temporarily, but it could be seen as a way to avoid the Company while still taking a contract for them and staying close to the Necromancer to discover his true name.
>>
>>2734778
I think Prince and Black Prince are one and the same. Prince is just being an emo about losing not being human anymore.
>>
>>2734729
We might be for sale, but if the Necro is only willing to pay one price (and his personality so far says that IMO), then that's really that. Risk vs. Reward, and considering what he just showed he could do, most of us deemed the risk too high.

Inconsistent run times result in mistakes on the QMs part, and a different player base that might not be consistent with previous attitudes.

But yeah I agree for me the fun is pretty much over. This should have been a big and agonizing decision, but the way it was resolved really took most of the inpact out of it for me personally.

A coin flip by the QM would have been preferable. Or a vote at the beginning of the next run.

Coming back to find it was resolved with a first roll when most people had dropped out . . . Tch.

Like it was archived at 10pm, but resolved at almost 5am where I'm at.

Just to fuck with the Necromancer we should have voted for the Neumenster King who started the Numeunster empire or whatever faggot that Necromancer hates.
>>
Does the MC even have a reason to care about what happens anymore? Because at this point things have gone from tragic to emo in nature, I don't mean the MC is emo 'cause he clearly isn't but this whole sequence of events is like something out of an emo hurt-porn file or something.
>>
And the entirety of the problem is completely contained to this one thread, 'cause all suffering in the other threads like Kid dying had a reason.
>>
Some of the shit here on the other hand not so much.

It's like someone insulted OPs mom IRL and so shit got dumped here.
>>
At this point I think Forgotten should have chosen the option he believed was better for the story and ran with it.

>>2735520
I wouldn't go that far. The reason we're currently suffering is this Anon's roll >>2730260. Had he not failed, we could have probably ressed Kid with no strings attached.

Shame on you Anon, wherever you live. Shame.
>>
>>2735632
Well buddy that would be argest the point of questing now wouldnt it?
Players get to vite on what happens.
Hell some of the shit wouldnt have happened without us roll bad ir good, or having shitpost votes wining.
If we was just pick what was better for stroy then we would only be reading his story and not making anything happen.
Also all thses butt hurt people who wanted to become the nercos bitch boy for a year go eat a bone
>>
>>2735658
Honestly all of this happened based on the one roll with Tara super liking us. All of this could have been avoided then and there. No face stab, no descent into total madness.
>>
>>2735658
Not really, since it was a tie and this is the end of the Quest? Besides, Forgotten was really into a possible Kid Quest.

But this is arguing different methods, so it's a moot discussion from the beginning. To each his own, yadda yadda.
>>
>>2735853
Yeah I didn't want to imply that I'm terribly unhappy with the result. I figured it was good odds the Necromancer would refuse any other deal. It just doesn't hurt to ask, since that then gives us a REASON to refuse other than "Sorry you're a creepy evil bastard". Or he agrees and we get what we want.

Or later when he's desperate he comes back and renegotiates terms.

If we are unable to have the balls to negotiate with the Necromancer at all, then we're in the wrong line of business

>>2735745
Nah it was locked in when we killed our unborn child in order to get revenge on Tara. No good endings left for Prince at that point, since we could have bargained with the Dark Father to leave without becoming an oathbreaking dark reflection of a man as he would have had an avatar in the child - one strong enough to stand up to the Necromancer if we hadn't given him the Emperor.
>>
>>2735632
> At this point I think Forgotten should have chosen the option he believed was better for the story and ran with it.

Mr. Misery Boner?

Mr. "I could have made the fail tolls for Jenny some level of death - absorbed into dwarf hive mind afterlife - released to be eternal spoopy ghost mascot of the Black Company - Comes back to life as Tankred" instead of "Death is the best outcome instead of the tormented living hell of only one or two successes with a critical success being debatable if her own afterlife or obliteration wouldn't be better"
>>
>>2736181
>>2735632
Oh and let's not forget the fallout that failure had on Saints personality.

Forgotten gets a little too caught up in "every failure means punishment as much as success means reward" which DOES lend itself to dramatic swings.

I remember a sci-fi book where aliens had a captured human working for them, and they had the same mindset. Every failure was guaranteed torture, but success was forced electronically induced orgasms proportional to the success so it was actually worse than the torture to succeed an unreasonable task than to reasonably fail.
>>
>>2736174
> since that then gives us a REASON to refuse other than "Sorry you're a creepy evil bastard"
> implying Prince's reasoning will be anything other than 'Can't go against the Captain'.

> Nah it was locked in when we killed our unborn child in order to get revenge on Tara.
Now this is just plain bullshit.
The spawn of a mad and destrcutive God would be worse than the Necromancer, and his mother was a selfish traitor.
What got Prince here were other factors, amongst which Kid's death, relying on Dark powers, Black Heart decisions and deciding to go to fekking Kresden.
>>
>>2736181
> still bringing up Jenny
Son, all that salt will be the death of you. Forgotten himself admitted he fekked up, the more do you want, a blowjob? Other than that and Prince turning into an ugly motherfekker, I can't think of a situation where he tried to screw us over.

Also, what fallout with Saint? She still cares about children (that option won), she simply doesn't care about deities and is harsher than before. Considering we corrupted her blade, it was a logical outcome.
>>
>>2736181
All that salt lmao. I was pissed too when kid and other company members died but in the end WE murdered every company member that died after Tara's betrayal. We chose to put a legless girl into some untested monstrous contraption. We made a bargain that locks us into a path of unending misery. There is no good ending or a path to redemption left. After this point the story is basically a Greek tragedy where the MC slowly descends into madness and drags everyone around him into the depths.
>>
>>2736297
Dont forget everyone chose to be eternally tortured after we die so there's that.
>>
>>2735853
Im hoping he just starts a new story after this in a different universe. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing up until everything went full tragedy.
>>
>>2736297
> At this point I think Forgotten should have chosen the option he believed was better for the story and ran with it.

Which is why I think he would have made a deal, what's one more after so many.
>>
Seems like some anons can’t accept the face that choices have consequences and that not every story has a good or redemptive ending.

Hell, even this story can still have bright elements at the end. Prince has lost himself, but he saved as many brothers as he could.
>>
>>2737129
He didn't save those that could have been brought back by the Necromancer.
>>
>>2737245
You mean the one person
And im our absence more of thr company would die
>>
>all this bullshit about kidivw stopped caring about this quest for the most part because like a lot of anons have pointed out, it's unnecessarily sadgrimsadness, and getting invested in a character just leads to disappointment after he kills them or has them change beyond any redemptive or likable value.

QM taking so heavy-handed an approach to killing characters without having an intermission to have the replacement characters get a chance to shine is what made this quest decline in quality, and the fact that he STILL keeps the trend tells a lot.
>>2731940
Dude, with respect, if you wanted a kid quest you should have just given kid back, there is such a thing as an appropriate time for a gimmie, and after this entire shit show that's been you over-killing the depression of the siege(which I think you yourself acknowledged, though my memory could be wrong), there's never been a more appropriate time for such a gimmie.
Shit, you could have just said the good karma we built up over the series came back to us.
>>
>>2737814
Gimmes are cheap though. Most of the pain was caused by the questers anyway desu.
>>
>>2737814
>Shit, you could have just said the good karma we built up over the series

Haha you're funny
>>
>>2737814
I didn't mind kid dying.

I didn't LIKE it, but it was fair.

The emotionally draining part of the siege was also well done I thought, but yeah we passed a breaking point and just more grim after dark - well after a certain point you have to stop. Or be perfect.

Like. Congrats we're all worn out and no longer having fun. But unlike the PCs, players can actually leave.

Surprise! Turns out that pushing your players to the breaking point, while being aesthetically pleasing, is not actually fun and turns the taste of any victory to ash as it's pyrrhic at best.
>>
>>2738128
>>2737814
Note: There's no better evidence of players giving up than the fact we've stopped trying to squeeze out every situational advantage possible for better DCs.

Because Crits, in either direction, are so overwhelming that it's ruined both planned actions by the QM as well as ours.
>>
>>2736181
>>2736202
at this point you are litreally just bitching about how grimdark and bitter this quest is which frankly is the appeal of it so why don't you fuck offf and play some noble bright quest.
>>
>>2738182
Past a certain point there are diminishing returns, and the dice system means crits randomly fuck the entire experience.

I bet you have an NTR fetish.

> Players won't let their precious Saint waifu actually suffer

The only thing I want in this quest is for Saint to die.
>>
>>2738182
You probably enjoy the writing of CS Goto.

I will admit the end has dragged out a fair bit but we are like one maybe two threads off concluding the quest so theres only so much left to do before Forgotten moves onto greener and possibly more noblebright fields in his Knight sworn to Valour quest.

>bitching about dice rolls
>Implying I have a ntr fetish
>Implying that Saint doesn't suffer as a general rule of thumb

Saint not following prince down his path of general suffering and damnation to below is one of the few wins we have left regardless of if she dies we can say she didn't follow prince all the way to hell.
>>
>>2738198
Prince won't die he's propensity for slaughter and carnage is terrifying and short of a truely epic hero, a mage plot or something on tier of the necromancer coming up and destroying prince, then again rolls never fail to surprise so if we do return to this setting ever again forgotten has said he wishes to return to the setting at some point which leaves some hope for an eventual good end to what is currently endgame
>>
>>2738043
Psh, we never did get the final count for the black heart/softy tally.

For the longest time the softies got it, every time, hell even when prince was a monster he told the blind dying neumunster soldier they defended the eagle, that the bearer got away.

So yes. Good karma.
>>
>>2738204
But Saint is fucking trash.

What about all those Black Heart + control/destroy choices?
>>
>>2731940
Man I'm still fuckin enjoying this shit. I want to find out what is going on with Mask, I don't get what everyone is bitching about.
>>
>>2738477
I can enjoy it despite some glaring flaws.

You can still be critical of things you enjoy and support.
>>
>>2738484
Most people don't seem to be saying anything constructive mostly just shitfligging,
>>
>>2738504
As is tradition.
>>
>>2738477
that's right. This quest attracts a whole bunch of salt for some reason. Black Company is still one of the best quests despite it's flaws imo
>>
>untainted and unblemished
The obvious hint here is that he can make Prince human again

Do you really want to make Kiranova unhappy? Vote Prince!
>>
>>2738614
The question is if we'd have to die for that to happen.
Even if we didn't lose the powers, dying even temporarily would probably still trigger the "if Prince ever dies" thing, leading to being tortured to eternity.

Might be that your idea could work, I'm just not sure I want to risk that.
>>
>>2738584
I'm mostly salty that I missed getting to play, but honestly getting cockblocked at the end of a finally successful event with the raid by having the Necromancer just walk in and handwave everything . . . Well this has just been disappointing all around.

I don't blame Anons for voting for Prince to go home. It's simply how everyone feels at this time.
>>
>>2738614
desu I wanted to throw down with the Necromancer
>>
>>2739198
Thats a silly idea as his been super powered up.
Its time to justbleave this shithole of a palce
>>
Just finished reading the archives. Eh, at this point I think it's a good place to end it for Prince. I mean sure we didn't get the happily forever after for Prince, but sometimes you don't. That's okay. It's good tale, a tragic one but good.
>>
>>2739334
This^
>>
>>2739334
Ye, we didn't get a happy ending but we've known for quite a while that wasn't going to happen
>>
>>2739297
I didn't mean right now, just eventually. Maybe the Warlord will want to hire us to fight him.
>>
>>2739334
I'm sure it's better if you read it as a book. Some people here are very invested in the quest and probably see too much of the arguments between the posts.

Just taking a step back it's still a very good story
>>
>>2739484
I feel like alot of people complaining never read the Black Company novels. Things get alot worse before things get any better.
>>
>>2739334
This isn't a tragic ending though, just unsatisfying.
>>
>>2739496
Is this the end?
>>
>>2739492
I'm complainkng about HOW they got worse.

I mean. I'm fine with how Kid got killed. Hope you guys enjoyed the +5 to that one roll.
>>
>>2739983
Kid died to almost purely random chance, now if you were mad about Jenny I would be with you.
>>
>>2740065
I'm pretty sure he is from his past posts.

Heck. I'm mad about Jenny. Like why not have the options be something like "she's dead, Jim" and get better from there? Like I didn't care very much aboit losong the albani war machine, but I really felt the grim dark was turned up to 11 for Jenny. I would have preferred a narrative positive outcome compared to a chance for a crunch bonus. Even just a "Jenny miraculously survives" and the war machine is gone forever.

The only way the Jenny thing could have been handled worse was a retcon.
>>
>>2740083
As annoyed as I am about Jenny as well...it was a while ago, and there's nothing to be done about it now except keep it as a lesson. No real use in haranguing him over it.
>>
>>2740083
>>2740098
Well buddy a recon would b have been the onyl way to sort that shit out since no one picked up on the fuck up with that nat 100 roll and forgeten dosnt do redos soo everyone fucked up that point at lest now shes dead and in no more pain
>>
>>2740098
> there's nothing to be done about it now except keep it as a lesson.

True that. Like having players roll against each other at 4am is maybe not the best of plans instead of just him rolling a 1d2.
>>
>>2740485
He's Australian, it was 4pm for him, which is right after work and everyone settled down.
As much as I want to imagine we Americans are the only people that exist, this whole "hurr Durr why did you roll when we were asleep" shit people are using to overrule a choice they don't like is rediculous, 4chan has many users from many nations on it.
>>
>>2740784
Yeah, the thread was SUPER active at that time.
