"Really? Hate? Isn't that a bit harsh?"

"NO!" I scream as loudly as I possibly can, still too angry to stop even as poor Amalia tries to cover her ears. "I HATE HER, HATE HER, HATE-HER-HATE-HER-HATE!"

"Riiight then." Amalia says with a shrug. "I guess you really do. First time you've skipped hello."

"...what?"

"Y'know, hello? The thing you usually make a huge deal of? With the sugary words and clingy hugs? You know, instead of just yelling and screaming at the forest loud enough to spook away all the animals until there's nothing left to hunt..."

"Hugs?!" I cry out. "How can you be thinking about hugs at a time like this? Since when do you even care so much about hugs? Do you even know what Princess Bully did?"

"Nope." She answers with infuriating indifference. "What did she do?"

"She..." The thought of that scene alone makes me choke on the words. "She..."

"SHE PATTED MY HEAD!!!"

She stares blankly, as if she somehow didn't care, until finally, many moments later... "Oh right. People 'round here have that weird obsession with that."

"What's that supposed to mean? "People 'round here?" It's so... so EVIL! So demeaning!" Why doesn't she understand that?

"Mrh." She grunts in reply. "Don't care much for it myself, but people outside of Golea don't really care one way or another. Just you guys. "Princess Bully" probably didn't know that."

"Really?" Sometimes I forget that Amalia didn't always live here. "Other people don't understand AWFUL headpats are?"

"Nope."

"Well that's not ALL she did! She also... well, I don't really know how, but it was like, she was inside my head, messing with my thoughts and feelings, and then suddenly I was in this weird place, as if she was using some kind of magic, but..."

Finally, THIS Amalia seems to care about, indifference giving way to a concerned squint. "A witch? Or..."

"It wasn't witchcraft for sure! Because that's... well I'm not supposed to say, I think, but I definitely know!"

She turns, taking a seat against one of the beeches and crossing her arms, grumbling something or other beneath her breath.

"Amalia..? You know something don't you?"

"Maybe. Not sure. Leave her alone for now."

Well I didn't want anything more to do with the princess of bullies anyway! But now, when she says that...

Witch Apprentice Quest resumes!

I've asked myself several times how you're even supposed to pick a quest back up after so long, and after many sleepless nights I finally arrived at an answer both wise and true.

I have absolutely no idea, so a somewhat awkward dialogue trying to summarize the most recent event just had to do! After all, you probably barely remember what's going on.

And honestly, I've probably forgotten more than a little myself, so you may find that some thins have changed. Some unintentionally, and a few things very intentionally. And most important of these is...

A character sheet!

It's not the prettiest thing ever, because my ability for design is quite pathetic. But at least it now exists, and has information in it. If you think something is missing from it, or could be improved, don't be afraid to tell me!

I've tried to make the sheet mostly self-explanatory, but the one glaring exception here is the "witch style" chart. In very short terms, it's a bit like a very weird kind of alignment system I've been brewing up, and that will be more properly introduced and explained very soon!

Another thing I've had in mind was that I need to clean up the story a bit, so I'm having a goal of trying to focus this quest a bit so we're actually getting SOMETHING done, instead of just being all over the place. That's why your first choice here is binary, so you guys can choose what you think we should focus on right now.

I've also been working on a few other things that I can't show you just quite yet, but I think it may interest you!

I strongly hope that is everything I needed to say because that's the end of this introduction. Let's get on with the quest.

Doesn't seem like there's much we can do about her right now.

Oh, and sorry about the small delay.

... and the big one too, I guess.

But enough of that, let's carry on with this. Looks like we're heading to Mistress' house! Surely she'll have great wisdom to share.

I'm sure she will. Mistress always has wisdom to share, unless she's distracted by Papa.

We should ask her about mean princesses and headpats later.

I guess we're starting up again pretty much right after last thread left off if we're still around trees and still mad.

>"Oh uhm, actually I think I was supposed to be at Mistress' house for today's lessons, probably an hour ago? It feels like I've been in this forest for almost an entire year! I should hurry!" [Ignore stupid princesses, time to witch!]

"Right." She replies without moving from her seat on the ground. Whatever it is she isn't saying, it sure seems to have caught her attention. Maybe she'll tell me later?

But for now, I really should hurry. I sure am lucky that Amalia is calm enough to remind me that I don't have time to worry about some meaniefaced bully, no matter how pretty her dress was.

... and lucky that she just happened to show up right now. What was she even doing here anyway...?

No wait, that doesn't matter right now either. I wave goodbye to Amalia and hurry along quick as I can. Which is very quick, because by now I'm pretty sure I could find my way to Mistress' house from anywhere in the forest! Even the tricky-sneaky roots poking out from the ground here and there don't make me trip and fall!

...very often.

Either way, it's not long until I find myself in front of the by now very familiar little house next to the by now very familiar lake. Though the late-summer bugs swarming over its water and crawling in the reeds, I wouldn't mind if I don't become too familiar with those. I can't wait until autumn comes in full! In autumn you can play in the leaves, and you can go mushroom picking and...

"Mistress, I'm here! Sorry I'm so late, I-"

"Really? "Mistress?" You call her that? Isn't that a little... creepy?"

The voice greeting me certainly doesn't belong to Mistress! No, that can only be...

"Camille?"

"What, were you expecting someone else?" She says with a playful smirk.

"Well this is Mistress' house so..."

"I know, I know..." She slumps her shoulders, putting away the playfulness for now. "Well you know, one thing happened after the other, very quickly too..."

I remember. It wasn't long ago, but the last time I saw her was under the church, when we were trying to save that werewolf and when she got hurt really badly. I had never seen so much blood...

"So yeah, you know, I wound up back here and dear mother insists that I stay here to rest for a day or two. Which..." She clenches her chest while making a very uncomfortable grin. "Which probably isn't the worst idea."

"Ah, maybe you should uhm, maybe you should sit down?" I look up and down her, but the wound seems to have disappeared completely. At least on the outside.

"Heeeh, thanks." She gives me the smallest of smiles, but a smile nonetheless. "I don't really deserve the concern though, do I?"

Well, she was kinda mean that one time but it's not like I'd want her to be hurt, or in pain!

"Aaaaanyway, let's do something about this awkward silence, huh? "Mistress" isn't home right now. And won't be all day, but not to worry, because she's left you in the incapable hands of this loving failure you see before you!"

... what kind of way is that to talk about yourself?

"Heck knows what I can teach you, so hey, let's do it like this, why don't YOU tell ME what's going on and we'll just pretend that I did something helpful. So, what has little Nadja been up to? Aside from saving my flat butt that is!"

"Your flat... what? Uh well, I was kinda hoping to learn more today so-"

"Well duh!" She exclaims, finally sitting herself down in the cushy chair in Mistress' little study. "But why? What do you want to learn FOR? What do you need it for?"

Isn't that kind of a big question...?

"Well, at first I just wanted to help Papa, because he's been very upset about his business, and there's this other meanieface smith who's stealing all the customers.."

"Uh-huh." She nods along as I recount.

"But then he found out about it and he got angry for some reason so now I'm not sure how to help him... Oh, and also there's the whole thing with the Baroness. The uhm, the one that's not, uh..."

"The one that's not dead." She says, finishing the words I couldn't.

"Yeah... I met with her, and she said she would like to have me do some jobs for her, but now that the old Baroness is dead I can't even get to talk to her. Her maid won't let me!"

"Sounds like a bother, but a witch can be quite a bother herself, you know!" She adds as I continue. Though... this is a little strange. People don't usually have that look when I'm talking about my problems. Normally they just stare into the air instead of looking at me. Weird!

"Oh, and well, there's also the other thing. You know, with, me." I don't really know how to explain this one, or what to say. After all, Camille is the one that was sneaking around trying to get Amalia to spy on me because she thought something was weird about me. And... and since that one night, every time I've tried to talk about it, or the dreams I've had, my tongue just seems to lock up.

"That one's a real bother too, isn't it?" She lets out a long sigh. "Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen any twelve-year-olds with as many problems as you! But hey, I owe you one or two, right? And I have some REALLY good advice for you here..."

"Stop." She states bluntly. "You really need to stop, and just focus on one thing. If you keep worrying about so many things, you'll snap in half for sure! So, I say you take a moment to think, then decide which of those you want to get started with, and we'll see if I know any tricks to help you along!"

Huh.

Well I definitely don't want to snap in half! Maybe that's not the worst idea ever. But the question is... what to do?

Obviously, helping Papa was the whole point to begin with, but if he doesn't WANT me to help him at all, then I just don't know what to do. Help him without telling him? But then, won't he be more angry if he finds out? Is it okay to not do what Papa says if I'm doing it to help Papa? It's so confusing! Maybe I should just do something else, and maybe eventually he'll see that I can totally help?

And the Baroness, the little one, Lucia, she could probably definitely use my help. She must have a lot to worry about too! And she said she'd pay me, and Mistress says she was fine with it too. Though, Mistress did also say not to get involved in politics, for some reason, but that shouldn't be a problem, right?

Or maybe I should really just be worrying about myself. I definitely don't know what I can do about trying to find out why I've been having weird dreams and all that though, but maybe Camille has an idea..?

>"I still want to help Papa, even if he'll be mad at me for doing it! But how should I..?" [Quest: Help Papa!]

Welp, took as many as one update for me to fall back into the habit of overly long and slow updates.

It's fair. A hiatus is something that gets called. This was more like a spiral of shame, regret, and disappoint that some people such as myself have a knack for inflicting on themselves without any good reason for doing it.

Wonder if Camille is smarting from how she's managed since the quest started, it's hard to tell the difference between not taking herself seriously and poor self-confidence. She certainly seems the type to cover a bad mood with forced cheer at any rate.

>"The Baroness definitely needs some help, so if I can do that I definitely want! And, I'd get paid to!" [Quest: Help Lucia!]

"Cool! Making friends with her could definitely take you some interesting places. I made some really interesting friends too when I was still an apprentice, and they've definitely taken me interesting places."

"And in interesting places..." She mumbles beneath her breath.

"What was that?"

"Nothing!" She quickly deflects. "I said nothing inappropriate!"

"Okay..?"

"So!" She hurriedly tries to move the conversation along. "What are these problems our little Sovereign needs help with?"

"I... I actually don't know what it is she wants yet. But when she asked me, that was before everything went crazy and now her maid won't let me go talk to her.."

"Let me guess" She interjects, tapping her chin for a moment. "Angeline?"

"You know her?!" Angeline definitely didn't seem like the kind who goes around making friends with everyone.

"I've met her, but I definitely don't know her. You know what I mean?"

"Yeah..." I definitely know. She's polite, and seems friendly, but when you talk to her long enough, you start feeling like she's actually a mile away and you're just talking to... a mask.

"I know this though, you don't want to mess with her if you can avoid it. So, it seems to me you either try to go around her, which definitely won't be easy. That maid is tricky. Or, you try to convince her otherwise, make friends with her or whatever, show her that you're capable?"

"Or, I guess, you just put her away, make sure she can't get in your way. Nothing rash, obviously, just put her to sleep for a while, or trick her into being somewhere else. We have options! Witches have lots of options!"

So... either try to be sneaky, or try to be convincing, or make sure Angeline can't get in the way? It actually seems a lot simpler when she puts it like that. Maybe Camille is pretty smart after all? That said...

"I definitely don't want to hurt her."

"Oh no no, we don't want that. We're not wizards, we don't go around hurting people when it can be avoided!" Camille quickly dismisses the notion with a wave of her hands. "No, we want to be clever about this. I have some ideas already, but, this is YOUR thing, not mine. So how would you like it?"

"Bo----oring!" She teases while rolling a finger through her hair. "But if that's how you like it, that's how you're going to do it. I'm not like mother dearest, so I won't try to tell you to do things my own way!"

"Uhm... thanks?"

"No need! I owe you after all, right? Plus, it'll keep you distracted from how I still haven't finished making your hat so it's all for a good cau-"

Did she just say HAT?

"-se, plus, I am supposed to be smarter than you. Would be bad if I couldn't help you out with this!"

"Hat?"

"So! First of all," She continues while completely ignoring me. "ABSOLUTELY NO USING MAGIC TO AFFECT SOMEONE'S MIND! That is NOT cool! Don't do it!"

"Uh, okay..?" Her voice has become unusually stern, so I feel like it's best not to question that. Besides... "Hat?"

"But that's not the only way to go about things. There's intimidation, coercion, seduction..."

She gives me a quick glance, then shakes her head. "Right, no-no on the seduction. Nevermind that... You tried crying?"

"No..?"

"Eh, probably wouldn't work on her anyway. Nah, you probably need to use reason on her." She taps her chin a few times, then suddenly lights up.

"I know! You need to find out exactly WHY she's worried about letting you get close. When you know that, you'll know how to convince her to trust you! And that means finding out her secrets! So first, you need to do some intelligence gathering!"

"In-tel-ee..?"

"That means snooping! And there are a few ways we can do that! You could plant a few charms to spy on her. They're easy to make, the trouble is getting them where you need them... And then making sure they don't get noticed either. But it's a classic, so that's always good to know!"

"Or..." Her smile practically glistens beneath the shade of her hat. "One of my favorites, dreamwalking!"

"Dream...walking? What's that?"

"It means entering the dreams of someone else. When we dream, we can't keep secrets. The things that bother us most always show up in our dreams, so if you can see what Angeline dreams about, you'll know what she's worried about!"

"It sounds a little icky. Is it really okay to..?"

"Well if you don't like that one, you could always just turn into a bird or a mouse, something she wouldn't notice, until she lets slip what it is she's worried about. But she IS a sharp one, so..."

Oh hey, I forgot I still hadn't actually explained the whole deal with Witch Styles... I should probably have done that before letting an option influence Nadja's Style.

Oh well, I think you should know what you're choosing, so let me see if I can whip up a very brief explanation, in case it might change your mind.

Every witch is unique. There isn't a single or code that all witches follow. They simply do what they feel is right.

Witch style represents how a particular witch will generally choose to approach and solve problems. Essentially, it's a quantification of a witch's personality. It's represented by 5 values that typically range from 0-9. The average attitude of an average non-witch is 3 in every slot.

There isn't a hard cap on how many points you can actually have in the styles, though obviously it's impossible to have a high score in every style.

- Ruthless represents the will and capacity for doing what's necessary. A low Ruthless score means someone who is squeamish and is likely to hesitate when faced with tough choices, but also has strong empathy. A high ruthless score means someone who is readily willing to make tough choices, but has also become dulled to the suffering of others.

- Wisdom represents someone who places high value on gathering facts and observing patterns. Witches with high Wisdom try to solve problems by carefully watching and learning until they have discovered which string to tug at to solve the problem, whether it be securing a peaceful resolution to conflict, or overthrowing a tyrant.

- Power represents someone who values force as a means of solving problems. For witches this means the direct confrontation and making sure you're armed to deal with every possible obstacle. That is, after all, the quickest solution to a problem, and anything else is just wasting time.

- Control represents manipulation of the environment as well as those within it. A witch focused on control does not show her hand before she has made sure the odds are already heavily stacked in her favour, such as through the use of wards and traps.

- Pacts represents believing in strength in numbers. The witch believes in gathering and aiding competent allies as a means of solving problems. After all, why try to slay the dragon when you can give the hero the strength he needs to perform the deed.

Styles reflect the witch's personality, so doing things that match that style is the way to increase styles. At the same time, style scores also give bonuses when trying to perform difficult actions that match the styles. So someone with a +7 in Pacts will get +7 to difficult actions relating to Pacts.

As an example, here is Mistress' style chart.

I'll leave this vote open for 10-15 more minutes, in case anyone wants to change their vote.

Thanks for the explanation.

This early on, I don't think we need to establish specific styles for Nadja. Although, each point is more important relatively speaking than once you're at the level of Mistress or the like. -1 Ruthless might bite us in the ass, but I still feel like the option is the one I'd choose without this mechanic being in play so I'll stick with it.
>>
Alright then, goody-goody mode is engaged!

"'Kay." She shrugs, then gently slips back further into the chair, stretching her legs and arms with a yawn. "Guess I'll take a nap then."

"Bwuh? But, but you said you'd help me!"

"Sure." She says while adjusting her hat downwards to cover her eyes. "But that's just people skills, you can't use magic to replace those. Besides, don't you already have those..? You befriended that girl, Amalia, right? I read about her, you know. That girl's not the kind who goes looking for friends. Sure as hell didn't want anything from me."

"You... read about Amalia? How? She's a real person, not a fairy tale!"

She grins, that playful smile from earlier making its sudden reappearance. "I guess you could say she's famous. A certain witch kept an eye on her for a while, long ago, wrote up a nice little report about it. There's one right here on the shelves too, if you want to read it..."

Huh. I can't say that I'm not curious. I know so little about Amalia from before she came here, but... Would it be okay to read something like that?

"That's your choice too! Sucks, doesn't it?"

Is she enjoying this?!

"Aaaanyway, if you wanna do this the old-fashioned way, then I can't really help much. But I'll tell you this much. Seriously, don't try to puppy-eye your way into that maid's heart. It's already taken and locked away."

"She seemed nice when I've talked to her though." I remember she helped me that one time with the creepy man. And I remember that her idea of helping was to pull out a sword. And I still haven't figured out where she even hid that sword!

"Oh sure. She was plenty nice when she caught me trying to sneaking around the castle when I was little too. Just took my hand and gently guided me back outside. But then, when she told me not to do such a thing again, that it was very dangerous..."

Her entire body shivers for a moment before she continues.

"Well, let's just say I knew exactly what danger she was referring to. Don't push her, Naddie. You gotta appeal to her reason. Oh, and if you're in doubt with regard to how to find her... I guess just try to fly through a window or something She'll find you."

She yawns again. I guess Camille must still be pretty exhausted...

Well... at least that's something. Not much, but something. So now the real question is...

>"Where's that report about Amalia?" I know it's a bit... snoopy, but maybe if I know more about Amalia I can help her better too! That's gotta count! [Read the report.]
>"I'll go try to talk to her, then. Wish me luck!" I'm curious about that report, but if Amalia doesn't want to tell me... [Don't read the report.]

"'Kay, good luck then." Camille's words barely make it past yet another long yawn. "I wasn't joking about that nap either so.."

I can't seem to decide how to feel about all of this. I was definitely hoping to learn something new today, but if Mistress is busy then what can you really do? And Camille is clearly too beat up to even stay awake at this point. And besides, she's not even that much older than me, so it's definitely unfair to expect more from her right now.

Still, I can't help being a little disappointed. But there's nothing more to do than say: "Sleep well, Camille."

The only reply is a soft snore from Camille. That was very fast!

Before leaving, the thought of "my" broom suddenly strikes me. Last I saw it was when I used it to get to the church in town, but I didn't bring it back with me after the werewolf mission went sour. I wonder if maybe Camille or Mistress brought it..?

As quietly as I can, I climb up the stairs to Mistress' bedroom. As I do so, I can't avoid noticing the makeshift bed beneath the stairs; a layer of hay, a blue blanket, and a small pillow that definitely weren't there last time I was here. Maybe Camille have been sleeping there?

At the top of the stairs I hesitate for a brief moment before entering Mistress' room, unable to quite shake the fear that she could come home at any moment and find me there, or even have been lying in wait just to catch me intruding.

But she isn't. It is the same bedroom as ever, with the large but simple bed, the great closet in the corner, and the closed window in the far wall. And if the broom is going to be here at all, it will definitely be...

Yes! I don't know if it was Camille or Mistress, but someone made sure the smaller practice broom found its way back to its place in the cupboard, right next to the larger one that I'm actually a little surprised that Mistress isn't using right now.

But that's just all the more reason that she probably wouldn't mind if I borrowed the practice broom, right? It's not like she's going to use it, and it's only a good thing if I get some more practice, right? Even though she was kinda mad the last time that I borrowed it without asking...

>When you think about it, Camille suggested that I try to go through a window or something, so I actually NEED the broom if I want to do that. That's important enough that I don't need to ask first, right? Right? [Take the broom and try to enter the castle via window]
>"Borrow" the practice broom, but just to save time. Trying to go through a window in the castle sounds way dangerous! [Fly to the castle, but use the front gate]

>"Borrow" the practice broom, but just to save time. Trying to go through a window in the castle sounds way dangerous! [Fly to the castle, but use the front door like a normal person]

Well it is a practice broom meant for apprentices. And there aren't any other witch apprentices around here. If I'm not using it, it's just being wasted. It'd be wrong not to use it!

...I just hope Mistress will think the same.

But that's for another time to worry about. Excited, I slam the window open a little too loudly before remembering that Camille is asleep just down the stairs. But I just can't help it, and the thought slips from my mind almost immediately as I feel my feet leave the ground.

I know I may still have a lot to learn about flying, but I did practise for one entire day, so gently gliding through the window is no problem at all for me, and the brief ride to the castle is even less of a problem. All I have to do is enjoy the feeling of the wind blowing in my hair and the way it makes my dress tickle my legs.

Flying like this just feels so much more right than walking or running!

I make sure to stop a good way before the castle itself. With the way it peaks above the trees, someone could easily spot me if I flew too close, and I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to break in or anything. I know Camille said that would be a good way to find Angeline, but...

But it seems like it would work better to do this the polite way. So instead, I'll use the front gate and ask to talk to her.

The two red-and-yellow clad guards posted at the front gate seem to pay me no mind, so I speak up to draw their attention. "Excuse me Sirs!"

At the very least, the closest of the two bothers to look down at me, even if I still can't see his face from behind the visor, and even if he still doesn't waste so much as a word on me, instead waiting for me to speak.

"I was wondering if maybe I could speak to Miss Angeline? The uh, the maid?"

...

"So uh, could I..?"

...

"Or maybe you could call her..?"

...

"Please?"

"What do you want with her?" A gruff and clearly annoyed voice speaks from behind that imposing helm.

"Oh, I uh... I uhhh..."

I didn't think that far... This isn't good, this isn't good! What should I say?! I think and I think but all that comes to my mind is how suspicious I must look, mumbling and sweating like this..

"Why, I called her here, of course."

Both the guards and myself jump with a start as a woman's voice suddenly speaks up from behind me. And while the two quickly return to their stoic stances, I continue to feel my heart racing and my chest heaving as the elegant maid strides past me, both dignified and humble. How did she do that?

"Sir Reginald, Sir Mannheim." She greets them both with a curtsy. "As you can see, this young girl comes carrying a broom, for I happened to let her know that we have seen many guests over the past few days, and that a helping hand would be more than welcome. I apologize if my rash action has been the cause of concern for you. If you wish, I will tell the young girl to-"

"Ah, no, that won't be necessary." The closest guard, apparently a Sir Reginald, speaks up before she can finish the sentence, not quite managing to hide the tremble in his voice. "If she is here as your assistant then I see no problem. Please continue the good work!"

I don't even have time to think before Angeline takes my hand in hers, giving both of them another curtsy that I clumsily try to mimic, then stuttering out a "good day" to both of them as she quickly drags me along through the gate and into the courtyard.

Then, as soon as we're out of earshot, she speaks. "I trust that broom of yours serves just as well as the regular kind. It is not a lie that I could use a hand around here..."

>"But wait, I didn't come here to clean, I came to talk to you about meeting with the Baroness!" [It's important!]

I didn't exactly come here to sweep floors, I know, but... but if Angeline really does need a hand then maybe helping her out like this is exactly the way to earn her favor. That makes sense, right?

She doesn't say anything else as she leads me through the hallways of the castle, first to the right, then to the left, and then far, far up a winding flight of stairs. All along the way we pass several guards like the ones posted at the front, and occasionally also some very handsomely dressed men. I suppose they might be advisers, or maybe even nobles? Much more importantly though, as long as I'm walking next to Angeline, broom in hand, none of them spare me a second glance. They simply carry on with their business, and the handsomely dressed men don't even lower their voices as we pass them by, though I don't actually understand the language they speak anyway.

Finally, after many long moments with nothing but the clattering sound of my steps against the stone floor and the voice in my head angrily demanding to know how Angeline can walk so quickly while not making any sound at all, we stop in front of a heavy-looking door.

And though Angeline can do many things quietly, this door stubbornly rejects that notion, letting out long screeches as it slowly gives way, revealing a large open room, lined with bookshelves stretching from floor to ceiling along every wall. That, and the cloud of dust that kicks up into the air in front of us.

"Not to worry," Angeline says. "I only intend for you to sweep the floors today."

I immediately breathe a sigh of relief while remembering how I felt after Mistress had me dust off every page of ever book in her study... By blowing on them.

"I will return when you are finished."

"Wait, how will you know when I'm-" But she's already gone before I can turn around.

How is she doing that?!?

Oh well, I guess I may as well get started...

...

...

"Pheeeew, that should do." Finally, I allow myself a moment of rest, leaning against one of the walls as I admire the transformation of the room, from being covered in a thick layer of dark-grey dust to, well, slightly darker grey stone. But still, that's got to be-

"Adequate." A voice suddenly speaks from beside me and a hand just barely grabbing hold of mine before I find myself stumbling towards the floor in shock.

How is she doing that?!?

"And in exchange for your work..." She says, then waiting with saintly patience before I realize she's trying to ask me what it is I want.

Well obviously I want her to let me talk to Lucia, but.. the question is, how should I go about this?

>Angle A: I can tell they're clearly very busy and there's a lot going on, so if I helped out with whatever Lucia needs then she'd be able to focus on the important things!

"I... I want you to let me meet Lucia! She needs my he-"

My tongue immediately falls silent as she stamps the floor and her eyes turn to steel. "You will address her as Baroness von Burchwald, Her Ladyship, or My Liege. And the Baroness needs nothing from you. Learn to watch your words if you wish to step foot in this place again."

"I uh, I'm uh," Her harsh words have me completely taken aback. What did I even want to say, again? "I... apologize, Lady Ange-"

"I am no Lady." She snaps at me.

Gah! Why is this so hard?!

She lets out a sigh, then grabs me firmly by the chin, making sure I can't turn my eyes from her steely gaze.

"Listen, before more foolish words come from your mouth. You are not made for this world. That is why I told you not to come, so you wouldn't get yourself killed with your untrained tongue. And yet, here you are again."

"I- I just want- want to-" My mouth keeps going, even as I try to stop it. Then, Angeline does that for me by tightening her grip.

She shakes her head and lets out a pained groan. "But you're just immune to reason, aren't you? So then, if you really must insist on endangering yourself, you are going to follow my exact instructions, every single time. You will come and go as I tell you only, and you will speak to nobody."

Wait, does that mean..?

"This is your cover. You are here as my assistant, and you will go only where I lead you. You clean, you say nothing, and I let the Baroness know where to find you. She will find you when it suits her, she will say what needs to be said, and you will return to your cleaning. You do not leave before I tell you to."

"These are my terms. Do you accept them?"

I feel like I can work with both of these. Expect the next update some time tonight. It may be lengthy, unless I change my plans for it between now and when I actually write it.

Hopefully you guys don't mind words.

Looks like tonight's update has to be pushed back until tomorrow, courtesy of a certain OS that doesn't believe in the right to choose when updates need to be installed.

I would apologize, but I'm a little too angry about the situation to do that right now.

Looking forward to tomorrow's update then.

>Argue! I'm a brave and powerful witch, I don't need a babysitter! [Defiance!]

"...Well? What will it be, little girl?"

Heat grows in my cheeks as her fingers continue to press against my cheeks. They sting, badly, and I feel my eyes growing wet. Angeline sees it too, but she doesn't let go. Usually Angeline is so polite and friendly and makes me wish I could be a little like her, but now, in here, she's just being so mean!

The goes into my arms, into my legs, everywhere, and without even thinking about it I suddenly find myself pushing her away with all of my strength.

"Stop doing that!!"

Sure, Angeline barely budges, but she does at least let go, instead folding her arms in front her as she looks down at me with the same firm gaze.

"This is stupid, and YOU'RE STUPID!"

Again I push back at her, and again she doesn't even seem to care. But that just makes my head feel even more hot.

"I'm the one who's trying to help here! I'm the one who was asked to come here, and you are the ones who need my help! So you should be treating me a lot nicer!"

"But no-o-o! No, you want me to play your maid, and to shut up, and you want-to-call-me-a-little-girl-EVEN-THOUGH-I'M-ALREADY-THWELVE! AND I DON'T LIKE IT! I AM A WITCH SO IF YOU WON'T BE NICE THEN I'LL JUST LEAVE AND IT'LL BE YOUR FAULT WHEN YOUR MASTER NEEDS MY HELP AND I'M NOT HERE TO GIVE IT!"

"YOUR FAULT!"
"NOT MINE!"
"YOURS! YOURS-YOURS-YOURS, YOURS!"

The heat finally begins to clear from my head and I find myself panting heavily, with my own hair in my eyes, and with my feet pounding so bad I have to fight back the urge to take off my shoes and throw them at her!

And Angeline is STILL just standing there, looking down at me like you would at a fly that's dared to sit on your sandwich.

Finally, she glances towards the corner of the room, towards the wall that I let my broom rest against when I was done. Without any words, without even the slightest hint of emotion, she walks over there looking as if nothing had even happened. She picks it up, then brings it to me, forcing it into my hands.

If she's going to tell me to sweep any more floors I'm going to-

"Strike me."

Her words fall like a hammer and everything seems to stop. Of course, we were already completely alone here, and yet, it suddenly feels far more so.

"Wha-why?" is the only almost-word I can stutter in response. This is definitely the last thing I expected to hear. Who would ever say something like that? Is this some kind of test?

"You have the composure of a four-year-old." She says, her tone as disapproving as her words. "So strike me, get rid of some of that pent-up anger so perhaps you can at least act your age."

That-

What-

Did she just call me a four-year-old??

"You..."

This broom isn't so different from the staff Camille gave me. It falls neatly into my hands, just the way Amalia taught me to hold it, and...

"-ITCH!!!

>Rolled 16 (1d20)
>Battle +1 (Initiated)
>Total =17 (Failure)

For one moment, there is nothing else in the world. In all of my being, there is nothing but the anger I hold towards this woman. Every muscle in my body, every bone and every fibre is fully enveloped in the force of the swing. And then...

Nothing.

Where moments earlier Angeline's face had been, the tip of my broom finds only air, and the unhindered force of the swing sends me swirling wildly around myself and I just barely manage to break the fall as my sense of balance evaporates.

"Straight for the face, then? Wonderful."

She mocks me from above, again, even as the sight of her feet fills my vision. Again, I feel the heat spreading through all of my body, demanding release. I lunge forward, not even wasting time to stand up first, instead trying to grab her by the legs. But again, she is long gone.

"STOP DOING THAT!"

She taps her foot rhythmically, like the ticking of a clock. "No. Not quite yet."

My eyes lock on her foot.

-Tap tap-

This isn't working.

-Tap tap-

Do something else.

-Tap-

I stand up, broom in hand...

-Tap-

And jump.

>Flight +1 (Initiated)
>Total =18 (Success)

This isn't just a stick. So why am I treating it like one? Stupid!

I let the broom carry me upwards, above Angeline, then quickly swing downwards.

This time she moves far too late, still trying to follow my movements. She didn't see this one coming and cannot avoid falling forwards as I finally strike her back.

Annoyingly, she still manages to make falling look graceful. But she does fall on her knee, a fact I allow all the time in the world to bathe in as I slowly descend towards the ground.

"Stop." She commands. "This moment is crucial. Irreplaceable."

Why won't she just-

"Quickly now, before the memory fades. Tell me, what do you feel now?"

What I... feel? I suppose I feel?

Right! You were super mean to me and treated me like I'm useless, and I've proved that I am not.

Thanks, I think I will follow that advice and state right here and now that I don't expect to be able to put out another update tomorrow since I'll be working a 12-hour shift. I may attempt to anyway, but it'll probably end in another keyboard nap.

I'll consider this vote to be closed when exactly 24 hours have passed since the update was posted. Probably won't matter, but just in case it turns out to matter, I wanna be able to say that I clearly outlined the vote cut-off.

Well that's for you guys to decide! I mean, I'll admit I was a little heavy-handed with this update, definitely pushing the border of what I consider fair QMing when I allowed Angeline to manipulate Nadja so thoroughly. But at the very least, you guys should have your say regarding the direction Nadja's character is going to move in.

Omake: Wolf and Owl II

Owl, the giant woman, then made some tea. Wolf the old atractive woman with long and white hair and emerald eyes drank it slowly.

"Were you not too soft with that Wizard?" Wolf finally asked.

"I wasn't prepared. And is a bad idea to carry anything lethal when I was already testing something new. Not to mention the others might have taken it the wrong way. However if you find a way to safety carry my most lethal stuff while flying, please tell me."

"Ah yes. That melting potion of yours is quite nasty. Why don't you make it into candy?"

Wolf had once removed a wizard eyes and locked him in a set of ruins were the only way to scape was being able to see the hints in the walls.

The Wizard actually survived but only because other Wizard rescued him. And by then he was almost dead out of thirst and starvation.

Eventually both wizards were killed, but that's another story.

"Because it melts the pot when I try! Heck the only things it doesn't melt are glass, bronce and steel."

Wolf then have a look to Owl "Then just put that thing inside a bronce canister and seal it well."

"That... that could work! Why didn't I think of that?"

"Probably because you experiment so much on yourself you messed up your brain."

"Yeah I... Hey!"

>Free! I feel like I've been pushed down but now that push is gone.

"Isn't that just fascinating?"

I blink. When... when did she even get back on her feet? And why am I even listening to-

"That will be the only one you get for free, by the way." She says while dusting off her dress with one hand, and snatching the broom from me with her other hand.

I don't really feel like that was necessary. "But... Why did you... What does..?"

"I wasn't joking around, if that's what you're wondering. I'm not particularly fond of jokes. Or pranks."

She crouches down in front of me and gently puts one hand on my shoulder.

"Not everything is what it seems to be. You're old enough to know that the same goes for people too."

Clearly! Usually Angeline is so polite and friendly and elegant, but today, in this room, she's...

"But lies, those are cheap. Fragile. Easily broken. If you want to play the part of the witch, it's not enough to just say that. You have to act like a witch, and to do that you have to think and feel like a witch. Otherwise, nobody's going to believe you're anything more than the meek little girl who desperately wants everyone to love her and shower her with praise that you present yourself as."

I- I don't do that!

...Do I?

"So remember exactly how you felt in that moment. Remember how it felt to know that you don't need everyone's love and most certainly don't have to do everything anyone tells you to do. If you can do that next time you come here, you can play the part of the witch, and I won't have to worry for your safety."

Is that... really why I felt like that? And besides... "Isn't that a really weird thing for a maid to say?"

"It certainly would be, if a maid was saying it."

Isn't that dangerously close to being a joke? "But then what are you? Why do you know so much about witches? You're not a- are you..?"

"Most certainly not." She stands, finally handing my broom back to me.

"So uh, are you saying that, if I want to be a witch, I have to..."

"You have to stop taking shit from people." She says, her tone leaving no doubt how serious she is. "Remember that feeling. Hold on to it, keep it in your heart at all times. If you can do that, I will ask nothing more of you."

She turns her back towards me and starts making for the door.

"Otherwise, you can play the peoplepleasing servant for the rest of your life."

"Angeline? Are you... free?"

She stops, just one step short of the doorway.

"Just so we're clear, I will deny that any of this ever happened. I may have taken off the mask for you, but I will need you to play along regardless until my mission is completed."

"What miss-"

She steps.

"I will let the Baroness know you are here, Miss Nadja." She says, briefly turning towards me for a quick curtsy and polite smile. "Please wait here and she will be along as soon as possible."

-------

>>
>>2745818
That's cheating! You can't just mention a super secret mission like that and then not say anything more about it! Not fair!

And besides, how am I supposed to understand what she was trying to say? She's obviously not saying I should go around hitting people, that'd be stupid, and she doesn't do that either. Something about that feeling..?

I think I've felt that way before though. The first time I flew on this broom! Well, the first time I flew without crashing into the lake. Or a tree...

It's a good thing I always heal fast, you can barely see the scratches unless you knew to look for them. Hopefully the Baroness won't notice them either. Though, she does seem like the kind of noble who wouldn't make a big fuss anyway. The nice kind!

But that feeling... It's so hard to describe. The feeling that I can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone.

Be me.

But wasn't I already me? How could I even be anyone other than me? That doesn't make sense! And what does she even know about any of that to begin with? This is too confusing!

I give up. I just can't figure that out right now. Instead, I find myself a chair and sit down to wait. And then, it finally dawns on me just how many books really are in this room. I thought there were a lot of books in Mistress' house, but her entire house could fit in this room several times. I bet if I started reading now, I'd die of old age before I was done!

"Nadja, wasn't it? Just Nadja, I believe was your preference? I'm glad to see you again."

The voice dragging me back to reality is soft. Softer even than a hug from a Mistress. But also, something...

At first glance, Baroness Lucia von Burchwald looks almost exactly the same as the first time I met her. Every frill on her dress is perfect, her hair shines in the sunlight falling on her, and her smile is carefully weighted, exactly as friendly as it needs to be and nothing more. She carries herself in a way that, despite being older and taller than her, I find myself looking up to her.

Looking like this, she doesn't at all seem like someone who had just lost her mother. Everything about her is just perfect...

Everything, except her eyes. It's subtle at first, but when I look closely enough it becomes clear as day. She won't look at me, she's looking right past me. They tremble, just slightly, enough that you wouldn't notice unless you're close to her, but it's there.

"Ahem." From behind her, Angeline clears her throat, silently telling me to stop staring.

How did this go again..?

>Curtsy politely, just like I practised. "Baroness von Burchwald, it is an honor to meet you again." [Deference]

Just because Nadja practices casual hugging with a wide variety of comfy characters does not make her deserving of such a derogatory term! Nadja is very choosy about who and when she hugs!

Right now is a great opportunity, of course. I mean, it's clear poor Lucia is caught in the web of noble conduct unable to ask for the simple pleasures of comforting human contact! To alleviate this is practically Nadja's calling.

She has heard stories of sweets that are sweeter than honey, but candy as you know it is just not within her price range.

When times are good, Papa might buy cake, particularly delicious ones might include depraved amounts of cream, strawberries, honey, and so on.

Speaking of strawberries, jam is another delicacy that is available to her. It's much tastier than just butter, which is even better than bread without butter. Fruits and berries in general is definitely her most readily available sweets.

She enjoys sweets as much as you'd expect any child to, which is greatly. But she doesn't enjoy it as much as she enjoys good meat.

I will continue to aim for one update per day, which should be perfectly achievable unless something unexpected happens.

>>2746266
Sometimes, sure. The best cuts obviously aren't something even a blacksmith's family is going to see too often, but now and then a good trade does come their way.

Candy meanwhile, is decadently blowing ludicrously expensive sugar on tiny treats that aren't even filling, instead of using it to preserve food. You could make honey-based treats to make it somewhat less ridiculous, but there's not enough of that going around either that making candy of it is going to be something you'll see a lot of people thinking of. If they're going to be making something sweet for a celebration or similar occasions, they'll make pastry that everyone can get a nice slice of. Or eat the honey as is, because that's already a treat unto itself!

But you know, all of this is just more reason why I like that anon's witch seems to be so focused on making everything into candy.

Oh, and don't worry about Nadja's diet just because she can't have candy. As long as someone reminds her to actually go eat, she's fairly well nourished with frequent access to fish, meat, fruits, dairy and so on on top of your staple breads. She's not a starving peasant girl living off half a bowl of porridge a day.

I'm not entirely why I even went so far off of that tangent when anon was just asking about candy but...

I guess... update sometime tonight? Please look forward to it?

>She looks sad! Quick, hug her so she'll feel better! [Hugslut]

"Wha- what are you-?"

I just can't help myself, and I don't want to! She's so small, and she looks so sad. Little girls like her shouldn't be sad, they should be happy and getting lots of hugs, and they should be playing, and eating sweets, and having a nice big sister who'll-

"Cease this! Unhand me at once!" She protests loudly and tries to squirm away. But that's no help. She needs a thorough hugging, and I'm not letting go until she's got one.

"Angeline!" She calls out, still fidgeting like an a trapped earthworm. "Make her stop! This is highly inappropriate!"

But Angeline does nothing.

"With respect, Lady Lucia, I do believe that would be very rude to our guest. Perhaps you might try returning the gesture? Besides, did you not tell me just before that-"

"SILENCE TRAITOR!" She screams, nearly making my ears pop. "Is this your kind of revenge?!"

Why is she like this? Even Amalia doesn't try this hard to not feel good! Doesn't she know how to hug at all? Maybe this isn't going to work? Maybe... maybe hugs are... not the right way to help her right now? Maybe hugs don't solve everything?

I don't even want to hug anymore. This just feels stupid. If she wants that badly not to be hugged, maybe it's not okay to try? Maybe if we were better friends she wouldn't be like this?

"I thought it'd help you feel better..." I try to explain to her as I let her back down on her feet.

"Hmph!" She brushes her hands down her dress, as if trying to clean it of dirt. But I'm not dirty! "I suppose I can forgive your simpler ways this once, seeing as we are... mostly, alone. Now, if you are ready to talk business that would be wonderful. I am quite busy, you know."

Well, that IS the reason I came here. Maybe once I've helped her, she'll want to be friends?

"The task I have in mind is relatively simple. I believe that's in both of our interests, for now. Angeline?"

Immediately Angeline steps forward with a coin purse in her hand and a handful of letters.

"Your advance payment will be 60 Stouts, to help you..." She casts a quick glance up and down my clothes. "Equip yourself appropriately."

Six- Sixty?! Just like that?

"As for the task itself, we've- I've received a number of letters from the farms near Heidel Mill. Are you familiar with that are-"

"That's where the Harvest Dance is held every year!"

"...Good. The farmers tell of strange disturbances in the area, including dancing lights in the night, missing cattle, toppled furniture and..." She pauses for a long time before finishing the last sentence. "Stolen left socks, apparently."

"How do they know they're left so-"

"What I need you to do is simply put a stop to whatever is happening on those farms. I really don't care how you do it or what is causing it. Just put an end to the disturbances and make sure these people can work in peace. Angeline will provide you with the letters, but you'll probably have an easier time just talking to the them directly. Oh, and one last thing..."

She steps back from me, giving me one more quick look before turning around.

"Could you please dress like an actual witch before heading out there? Nobody is going to feel any more safe if you go out there dressed like... that. At the very least you could wear your hat."

"That will be all."

And just like that, she's off, and I'm alone with Angeline again.

"This should be everything you need, Miss Nadja." She says with a curtsy, then hands me the purse and letters.

>Acquired 60 Stouts

"I uh... thanks? But I'm not really sure what just happened. It was all so quick, I couldn't even get a word in."

"The baroness is indeed very busy. Thank you for offering your time to assist her."

Owl would give her all the sweets she wants.

Thing is, that would also lead to (temporary) transformations like Nadja the talking cat...
>>
>>2750838
As long as it's temporary!
>>

Oh Owl would NEVER do permanent harm to another witch. Not even if she hated Nadja.

Then again there is a reason Wolf calls her an idiot.

Wolf is the kind of witch all scary stories talk about, she is even the witch on some of that stories because yes, she is that old.

Owl represents a slighty newer generation of witches, the one that can be quite scary and outright lethal if you are a wizard but who tries to be nice and help fellow witches because she thinks witches only have each other to rely on.

She is actually a good teacher is just that she is too focused on her potions to remember she should take a student.

Or more like another one.

Yes Owl had a student.

Don't worry said student is still alive and well.

Is just... Owl is a tad clingy. Wolf had to literally run her away thowing balls of fire, for days, just that she would move out already.

I bet Owl knows how to hug properly.

Yes but she is also more experienced and social aware than Nadja.

Now in this case she would have hug the little girl anyway because she knows what's like to lose your parents.

Wolf on the other hand, would have been perfectly professional and polite. Then offer a discount disguising it as more politeness.

>Head back to Mistress' house to ask Camille when I get my hat! That's the most important thing witches wear! Oh, and also to see if she's feeling better.
BUT BEFORE THAT
>Ask Angeline about [Hugs]

"Hey Angeline? How come... Why didn't-"

"Respectfully, Miss Nadja, you must surely realize that-" She pauses momentarily to clear her throat before finishing the sentence.

"You are just a commoner."

Just... a commoner? Is that why? Is she saying...

"You mean she doesn't like me? Because I'm not a noble? So she's... She's never going to like me? Never, ever, ever?"

"No, th-"

"That's so awful! She looks so sad but she won't let me help her feel better! What should we do..?"

For a moment, I catch Angeline rolling her eyes at me. She's not taking this seriously at all!

Wait, that's the answer! Of course!

"Angeline! You have to do it! You have to hug the Baroness!"
"Pardon?"
"Here! I'll show you how to do it!"
"Oof!"
"See, first you have to-"
"I KNOW WHAT A HUG IS, YOU LITTLE LUNATIC!"

Yes, this should be okay! Angeline isn't as soft as her dress makes her look, not at all, much harder than most girls actually, but that's still okay because she's very warm and makes you feel safe, like a wall keeping away the monsters at night.

...she kind of reminds me of Amalia, actually. I wonder why that is. But that's not important right now.

"Angeline, you have to promise to hug her for me! It's super important! You have to promise!"

She pulls backwards, just a little. "And if I do that, you will leave without making a scene?"

"You have to promise!"

She sighs. "Fine, fine..."

Wow, visiting Angeline and the Baroness sure was a fun time. Those two are such an odd pair! And they say such odd things! But I did get to meet with the Baroness, finally, and she gave me a job. I've got both the pay and the letters safely in my bag, and I'm feeling super ready!

Buuuuut, both of them did seem to think it's important that I... dress more witchy? I suppose that's not completely wrong, if I want people to take me seriously, I need to look like a real witch. Then they'll know how cool and awesome I am without me having to take time explaining it to them first. And the absolutely most important piece, the one that every witch has to have, is obviously the hat!

I think Camille was supposed to be making mine. Apparently that's a kind of tradition, the old apprentice makes a hat for the new one. So, time to make sure she's feeling better so she can finish my hat soon!

Luckily, with the broom I borrowed-without-asking, the trip back to Mistress' house only takes a few minutes. So much better than walking all the time!

"Camille?" I don't knock before entering, but I do try not to be too loud. When I left she was just falling asleep and seemed really beat up. Hopefully she'll be-

Nope, fast asleep, still in that same chair where I left her. Now what should I..?

>It's almost evening, she's slept enough for one nap. Wake her up so we can get to work!
>Wow, she really is beat! Maybe I should make sure she gets something to eat and drink, and sleeping in that chair for so long can't be good for her either. Oh and I should check on her wound too!
>Let her sleep it out and head home for the day. It feels like I've been out late and missing dinner for so long, it'd be nice to be with Papa again for a bit.
>Something else? [Write-in!]

Is there more Nadja this thread or should we wait for the next one?

Hope you're having a nice summer Friend!

Current update status: Overheating

My father is Winter and my mother is the Sea. I do not thrive in the heat that has been rampaging across the lands.

I want to write more, but so far this week the time that i have not been at work have been spent engaging in activities that i feel would be most accurately described with the word "flounder" or with comparisons to a beached whale.

In short, my productivity is at a very low point, and i really don't know when I'll be able to get myself together to write shit again. I do intend to though, and will of course have the blue bird bear word to you when that time comes.
Please look forward to it, and stay hydrated.
