You are Alabaster Soliloquy, Gacha game addict and owner of an all-seeing eye. Sort of.

PREVIOUSLY:
-You went to the Oregon desert and unearthed a time capsule.
-Inside was a tape of Darkbloom's experiments on you, Camelia and Galatea as children.
-There was also a device similar to the ones implanted in the three of you.
-You came to an awful realization: David Darkbloom murdered your parents.

Nothing good has ever come from a name-drop episode title.
>>
The stink of the municipal sewer system is so much worse from inside of it. You walk through it with a group of thugs on loan from Tyrus, wearing lighted helmets, along with knee-high waders and a hazmat suit which hardly make you comfortable in the fetid stream of waste that flows through, ankle-deep. The sewage is coffee brown, with weird rainbow colored oil slicks on top.

You have to stoop because of the low ceiling, which begins to take its toll on your back after a while. The only sound is the splashing of many pairs of feet. You are flanked on both sides, to the front and rear, as this little caravan of criminals leads you through the labyrinth to the right spot.

The one in the lead holds up a hand, stopping you. He points up. A ladder leads to a manhole cover.

The man writes on a portable whiteboard now:

>sub basement to parking garage here
>200 feet north is direct below server room

You nod your understanding.

>can u do it

You survey the sewage tunnel ahead. The roof here is slightly higher than the rest of the tunnels you've been in - you can stand fully upright again, a blessed relief. This plan has been a long time in the making, it seems.

Camelia wants you to fill this tunnel with explosive charges and destroy Darkbloom Analytics from underneath.

You erase the man's writing and fill in your own.

>I can do it. Doesn't mean I will.

He rolls his eyes.

>tyrus needs an answer today

>Tell Tyrus I'll be in touch.

At home, you collapse into a deep but ultimately restless sleep. This sleep is interrupted after just a few hours, by a phone call from Alex.

"Ally! I'm so glad you picked up."

You rub the sand from your eyes as you sit upright on your foldaway bed in Cerise's living room.

Rose, who hasn't been sleeping at all, watches you intently from the foot of the bed. She hugs her knees with her chin resting on top. You sneer at her to warn her off staring at you, to no avail.

"Hey--" you say into the receiver, trying not to sound groggy. "What's up, bab-- what's up, Alex?"

"You must have been reee-ally sick if you're only waking up now," Alex hums. (You always sucked at trying to pretend you're fully awake). "Whitney told me all about it. She said you're pooping your guts out!"

You grimace. "Yeah. I'm totally gutless right now."

"I'm so sorry to interrupt your recovery! Make sure to drink lots of water and take a lot of vitamins, okay?"

"It's fine..." you grumble. "What do you want?"

"Well, erm--"

"Out with it."

"If you're feeling all right later on, you should totally come to work. Ms. Guiteau made a huge breakthrough over the weekend! But... don't push yourself. You should recuperate first... I know you and your sister and your cousin all have that stomach bug..."

"Once removed," you mutter.

"Huh?"

"Nothing. Look, I--"

Rose's unmoving face staring back at you is more than a little off-putting. You're half tempted to go in just to get away from her creepy staring.

You hang up. "Where's Cerise?" you ask Rose.

"Sleeping."

"You should be sleeping too, don't you think?"

"I was," Rose says.

"You're a liar, like usual. I can see the bags under your eyes."

"I guess we match, then. You fucking raccoon."

There's the Rose you know and-- well, she's at least able to spar a bit.

"I'm going to work. I'll be back in a few hours - hopefully. Tell Cerise if she wakes up before I'm back."

"Mm," Rose says.

"And get some sleep, Jesus. The last thing we need is you collapsing at work tomorrow, raising suspicions..."

As you stand to get dressed, Rose stretches out on your bed.

"When I said to get some sleep, I meant that you should do it on your bed."

Rose isn't listening as she cuddles up beneath the comforter. You shake your head and sigh.

This is National Public Radio. News Now. Monday, May 14th, 2018.

In a surprise turnaround, David Darkbloom, CEO of Darkbloom Analytics, has signaled openness to a congressional inquiry over the hacking incident that occurred in March. Over 400 million personal accounts, with sensitive private information, are believed to have been compromised. The perpetrators remain unidentified.

Agreeing to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Darkbloom said through chief spokesman Steven Armstrong: "We anticipate that a full and transparent accounting should put the public's concerns to rest."

Senate Intelligence co-chair Mitch Warner said the decision was the right one, and that the public testimony could happen as early as the first week of June.

David Darkbloom is almost certain to appear before the committee, but other names are also widely expected to make an appearance: Mara Darkbloom, his wife and COO; Nelson Berenstoin, the CTO; and Cerise Soliloquy, the woman in charge of the company's internal investigation.

At work, the little coder's den outside Sable's office has been transformed into an ad hoc laboratory: and there's Ken walking up and down the aisles between tables, instructing people on how to assemble SMATTERS units. With every step, the spurs on his boots go jingle jangle.

"What's going on?" You ask him.

You feel something bump against your heel - turning and looking at the ground, you see a completed SMATTERS routing itself around you before continuing on its merry way. Ken intercepts it, picking it up and cradling it and petting it - just like you would with a flesh-and-blood bunny.

"We deploy tonight in select cities," Ken says. "Interesting times! Gets my dander up!"

"This is..." you begin, but aren't sure what to even say. "Deploy?"

"Bingo!"

"Where are Alex and Sable?"

Ken points towards Sable's office.

You start towards it, but a voice from one of the workstations stops you up: "Howdy, pardner."

It's Noelle, in her best jokey impression of Ken's voice. "You gonna pull your weight around here or what? I've got a kit for you to work on too."

You can hardly make eye contact with her, knowing what you know. You stare at the ceiling and wonder how everything could be going wrong all at once.

While Sable returns to work, Alex is on cleanup duty below her desk. You finish getting dressed again and compose yourself.

"Things are moving pretty fast around here," you say. "What happened over the weekend?"

"Everything," Sable says. "Just everything. It's all coming to an end point... we have to be ready for the next phase."

"Which is... which is what, exactly?"

She stops typing, looks at you. "What David Darkbloom wants and what I want are separate but commensurate things. This -- right here, is the culmination of what he wants. What comes next is what I want."

You have to try really hard not to snap at her - just for being such an obfuscating little shit. "What is it you two want?"

"The world we live in isn't right," Sable says. "It's sick. The people in it have all gone mad. I'm mad - you're mad. David Darkbloom wants to use this project to make people forget. I want something more... I don't want to forget, I want to fix it..."

"I really need you to be more concrete here," you say, unable to mask your frustration. "Will you please, just once, be clear--"

Darkbloom is already waiting in the boardroom when you arrive. He has his hands behind his back, and he stares pensively out the broad double-paned windows.

Sable takes a seat at the conference table, right behind Darkbloom. The wordlessness of the proceedings thus far doesn't exactly put you at ease.

"Thank you for taking the time out of your day to come here," Darkbloom says. He doesn't turn around. "I know you are a busy person."

You sit across from Sable at the huge oak table without replying.

"Have you heard the news?" Darkbloom asks. "I depart for Capitol Hill soon. Isn't it wonderful how many people conspire to ruin me at every turn?"

You say nothing.

Darkbloom finally turns now, and sits beside Sable. "Sable, tell Alabaster your thoughts on VR."

"Virtual reality is a meme. Augmented reality is the future."

"It's important, as a leader, to be willing to countenance disagreement," Darkbloom says. "Conflict and disagreement is natural. As long as your subordinates can commit themselves to achieving the organization's priorities, it is all right if they do not themselves buy in. I hold that principle quite dear to heart. I don't want an army of lick-spittles."

You say nothing.

"Sable has done really quite tremendous work, with your help, and many others - she has her vision for possible applications and I have mine. But really, the augmented reality of the future Sand Reckoner implant is just a pump primer."

(You can't help wincing in surprise a little at Darkbloom so abruptly and frankly discussing Sand Reckoner.)

"We can sell augmented reality to interested government agencies, militaries, politicians... really, anyone who would benefit from a HUD for showing you at a glance what's what about who's who in the world. But that's not the end point of Sand Reckoner. The end point is this."

Darkbloom retrieves a small aluminum case from beside his feet and puts it on the table. Clicking two latches open, he reveals to you a sleek purple headset that is clearly meant to fit over the eyes.

"Sable calls this Gateway to Heaven, which I think may be a sly allusion." He smiles at her, but she doesn't return the gesture. "It's a working name, anyway. We don't want prospective buyers drawing mental associations between this miracle you see here and Nike shoes poking out from under white sheets."

"What does it do?" You ask - Sable, not Darkbloom.

Sable's explanation is simple, and hardly illuminating. "If Sand Reckoner knows you, the gateway makes you a special game to play."

"A game!" Darkbloom laughs. "Sable is as humble as she is ingenious. This device makes you an entire universe, Alabaster. It calculates the universe as you would best enjoy it. It's a portable paradise."

You shake your head dumbly.

"Do you understand? This is the end of suffering. The end of strife and sadness. The final repudiation of Leibniz!"

Darkbloom obviously expects you to have some reaction, positive or negative, but you deny him the pleasure. You're as passive as a cow chewing cud.

Darkbloom turns up both palms in a sort of shrug: "All right. You need a demonstration. With the understanding that this is a prototype badly in need of a more complete data set - which Sable works round the clock to provide us - I invite you to test it for yourself."

"You what?" You say.

"Put it on. Turn it on. See for yourself."

He is already standing, device in hand, circling around to fit you into it.

"Is this safe?" You ask Sable.

"It's safe. It's only just a game - a not very fun game, either."

"He seems to be having a negative reaction," Sable says as she watches Alabaster writhe in his seat.

"Once removed... once removed..." Alabaster mutters.

"What on Earth?" Sable says.

"Nevermind that. He's calming down."

"He wants you to remove it."

"That isn't it! It's just data interference, that's all!"

"Once removed... once removed..."

Alabaster jerks violently, with such force that even Darkbloom can't hold him down. He falls to the floor, seizing. He foams at the mouth, his entire body going stiff, and flops this way and that on the ground.

"I'm taking it off of him!" Sable shouts.

Darkbloom pulls a small pistol from his waistband and points it at Sable. "If you do that, it'll kill him," he growls. "If you do that... it will have all been for nothing!"

Sable glowers at him, calculating quickly whether she should take the risks and physically revolt or let this play out for a little longer.

"Just a few minutes."

"It felt like hours..." You look around. "Why am I on the floor?"

Sable helps you to your feet. When you get your bearings again, you see Darkbloom sitting at one of the conference table's tall chairs, his arms resting on his knees, his head bowed.

He has a gun in his hand.

"What the hell," you say.

"I am sorry, Alabaster," he says, not looking up. "I don't think you had a very enjoyable experience, did you?"

You look at Sable. "Why does he have a gun?"

"It doesn't matter," Sable says.

Darkbloom puts the gun back in his waistband. He finally makes eye contact.

"You're familiar with Plato's allegory of the cave, right?" He says.

"Yeah. That was definitely some allegory of the cave bullshit right there."

"What if it wasn't?" Darkbloom says. "I don't know what exactly you saw, but..."

He returns to his spot at the window, basking in the sunlight. He thinks for a long moment.

"If you believe in free will," he says, "you must - you have to know that every choice creates a new reality. Every choice is a reckoning. Why is our reckoning any more real than any other possible reckoning? It's no more accurate to say our reality is the true one than it would be to say that 2+2=4 is truer than 3+2=5. And if we knew everything... if we knew it all... we could find the most optimal reckonings. That's all I want."

"You're insane," you tell him.

"If I've hurt you, I'm sorry. I have loved you like a son, Alabaster."

"You killed the people who loved me like a son," you say. You can't help it.

"That wounds me," Darkbloom says. "It wounds me that you would believe such a thing. Why would I kill your parents? What benefit would it serve?"

"To hide the truth of what you did to me and the others."

"How would you ever know the real truth? Not even your mother knew, rest her soul."

"Then why is she dead?" You say, half shouting. "Why is she dead?"

"Maybe... maybe an unfortunate accident. Such things are always possible. Or maybe -- if it's something more sinister, then step back and look at motives. Consider is dispassionately. Who else has a motive? Who might want you on their side? Are Camelia's parents dead? How do you know that?"

On the elevator ride down with Sable, the silence is deafening. You have no idea what to say or how to say it. It's Sable who finally breaks the silence.

"I didn't know the Gateway to Heaven would be such a terrible experience. I tried it myself and it was actually quite fun... I'm sorry, Alabaster."

"Are you still going to help Darkbloom after what you just saw up there?"

"Yes. Absolutely. It has to be like this... I may not like the man, but his money and resources make everything possible. This is my life's work."

"Do you know what Darkbloom did to me?" You demand.

"Yes. He put a device in your eye. The data it gathered was fundamental to everything we've developed."

"Do you know what happened to a girl named Camelia?"

"Her real name is Amber. Yes, I know about that. Dr. Carte told me."

"You're okay with that?"

"Working with the tools at hand is different from being okay with something. You must understand, Alabaster. This is important work."

The elevator dings and opens to the lobby. You step out, turn to face her.

"There's a lot to be done," Sable says. "Go home and get some sleep."

"No," you say. You reach out and stop the doors from closing. "Come with me and watch a video."

"I've seen that video. It won't change my mind."

The doors close again. This time, you don't stop them. You feel sick with a sense of betrayal.

You take the next elevator down and find her in her office. She's her usual self -- knocks back what looks like half a pill bottle before resuming her work at her computer terminal. Just outside, her drones are still building SMATTERS units.

"What is so important about this work?" You demand.

Alex is at your side. He must have followed you in from outside - sensing your anger, perhaps.

"David Darkbloom is right about one thing in particular," Sable says, "if nothing else. What we do here has the potential to end suffering. It really does."

"Bullshit," you say. "That man killed my parents!"

"Killed your... your parents..." Alex mutters. "What?"

"I don't know," Sable says. "I don't want to know. I'm sorry for your loss."

You grab her chair and turn it around so she's facing you - an old maneuver.

"You know now," you say. "You know because I'm telling you. David Darkbloom murdered my parents."

"That can't be true," Alex says. "Mr. Darkbloom? A murderer?"

"What are you going to do about that?" You say.

"Why are your parents so fucking important?" Sable shrieks. "Are they more important than everyone else on Earth? You would end this project because you think Darkbloom did something to them? A Sand Reckoner implant could improve the lives of billions! We'd know each other better... we'd know the world better... we'd live in harmony again. No more war -- no more killing. I'm sorry about your parents, Alabaster. I'm sorry! I didn't hurt them. And I'm trying to make a world where good people like your parents never get hurt again!"

"Then let me work in peace," Sable says. She turns back around.

You storm out of her office, boiling with a barely contained rage. Alex follows you out, past the coder's room, and into the garishly lit hallway.

"Ally! Ally! What's going o--"

You grab him by the shoulders and push him up against the wall. He shudders with fear.

"I'll tell you what's going on. Your boss's boss is a murderer who killed my family. Your boss is working for him. And you're working for her."

You step back. Alex crumples to his butt, his legs splayed. "I don't understand..." he says, fighting tears. "I don't understand... did I do something wrong? I... I'm sorry... please..."

You stare down at him. "Pick a side, Alex."

"Are you leaving?" He says. He wipes his eyes with the back of his palm. "You won't come back?"

"Are you still going to work for Sable?"

"Ms. Guiteau needs me..." Alex says. "W-without me... s-she'd..."

You turn.

"Ally! Ally, please! I'm sorry! I love you!" He falls to the ground, in the fetal position, weeping. "Please don't go, please! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

You don't listen to his pitiful pleading as you walk down the hallway.

On your way out of the Darkbloom campus, you send a message to Galatea's Skype account - the only way you know how to contact Camelia.

>I'm in. Tell the others.

You hope she understands to pass it on to Camelia and Tyrus.

As you pocket the phone and move across the street, towards the parking garage, a voice calls after you from the curb.

"Alabaster! Fancy meeting you here. Wanna catch a ride with me?"

You grimace. "I'm sorry, Noelle. I'm really busy right now."

She pulls a gun. In her other hand, a badge.

"I insist," she says, her bubbly facade dropping like a rock. "You're going to have to come with me, Alabaster Soliloquy."

A panel van nearby opens its side door. A man in an FBI coat grabs you by the arm.

I can look it up. Yet I can find a variety of definitions on the internet. I can also make up my own definition, if I want. I'm interested in the one you're using.

Defining one's terms is a basic tenet of argumentation. It can often help clarify the exact point of contention.

>>
>>2731793
Not quite.
By the working definition, a security camera would be augmented reality.
In this sense, the augmented reality we're working with seems to be a "fake world imposed on a real one." Think Pokemon Go as a useful example, and absolutely think Accel World as an anime example.
What you're referring to seems to be virtual reality, a reality your brain is tricked into accepting as a real one, with no basis on any actual reality. Real life examples are about a century off in technology, but SAO, Overlord before it became an actual isekai, and many many other examples exist in anime.

Rose really is a great character and Rose has grown a lot since season 1. In the first season Rose could never drop her thorns but Rose now has rose s in her eyes and could be compared to a kiss from a rose on the gray. Seeing Rose 's rose y cheeks makes me turn rose red.
>>
>>2731808
>>2731807
You're cute, but I only count the mentions that happen in the story, not in the entire thread.

I was surprised that Rose widened the gap over Cerise so much since they were neck and neck. Then I remembered I wrote that therapy scene after episode 10 which bumped her up a bit.

I'll definitely continue the therapy sessions at least a couple more times. Maybe Cerise will get one too.

>>2731798
My personal biased definition?

If we're throwing away any existing definition and just have me explain what real is it would be "real is real". When I see something I don't check a definition to explain if it's real or not I just know when it is when I feel the essence if realness. A dream for example doesn't have the essence of realness even though it felt real when I had it so I don't consider it real simply cause it isn't real. Same applies here, I don't consider someone superimposing a possible reality into your head as real it's only possibly real as opposed to just real

Not sure if that makes sense when trying to explain it to someone else

>>2731801
>By the working definition, a security camera would be augmented reality.
What the fuck are you taking about? It really isn't. A secruity camera doesn't superimpose an image into your brain. A dream is a much better example for this situation.

>In this sense, the augmented reality we're working with seems to be a "fake world imposed on a real one."
That's what I've been saying this entire fucking time. It's a FAKE world superimposed on a real one to give it the ILLUSION of reality. Aka it's not real but it seems like it is

>What you're referring to seems to be virtual reality, a reality your brain is tricked into accepting as a real one, with no basis on any actual reality
I literally took a fucking screenshot of augmented reality. Go look up the actual definition of virtual reality and you'll find what I'm saying is completely different
>>
>>2731842
The reason I ask for your definition, rather than any that I can find elsewhere, is because that's the one you're instinctively referring to. And besides, even if we were using official definitions, there's a multitude and I have no way of knowing which of those you're using.
As for your definition, interesting, but the logic is cyclical at points. My take is that reality is an assertion that the physical world around you actually exists. If you can find evidence against that assertion, such as a limitation or incongruity (e.g. hitting the outer boundary of the program, running into a glitch, etc.) or simple foreknowledge (e.g. remembering that you were hooked up to a machine), then you are not in reality. Therefore, the reality that you and I live in is real by virtue of our inability to prove it isn't.
Now the problem with my definition is that it can provide a false positive in cases where counter-evidence is indiscernible or a false negative where faulty counter-evidence is found. The latter is typically regarded as insanity and can generally be dismissed on those grounds. The former is what I'd consider the point of contention, because it puts our current reality into question whereas most would (understandably) take it as unquestionable.

Aside, let's take a moment to appreciate that Fuck Quest is asking the hard questions.

Sand Reckoner isn't free. The Tree of Data must be littered with the blood of parents. Camelia "Amber"is no daughter of mine! She is a National-Bolshevik anarchist and probably German as well :DDDDDDD. Big Data not Gay space communists ok? Praise Hegel.
>>
>>2731842
Going from your definition of augmented reality, "real is real", "augmented reality relies upon the superimposition of a possible reality", "possible realities are not real, only possibly real", and so "augmented reality is not real, only possibly real."
If superimposition is the key to augmented reality, note that it isn't necessarily as high tech as superimposing an image directly on the brain, in fact, it's been done for hundreds of years with glasses. If you were to ask me, or any other person who wears glasses, this form of reality is not merely possible, it is more real than the world viewed without them: the world without them is a blurry mess, while this augmented reality allows us to see the world in detail. So what is ultimately real? Who is right?
I say everyone is, because what somebody else views of the world is of no concern to you and you have no way of knowing it with certainty in the first place. If somebody is born with a defect that makes every person they see a giraffe, who's to say that that person is wrong? If a person is born with a defect that makes every instance of red be blue, and every instance of blue be red, who's to say they're wrong either? Now let's say all these people are given reality augmenting glasses, which allow giraffes to be seen as people, reds and blues to be seen correctly, and so on. Is conforming with this generally accepted reality while rejecting the reality as you see it more real, or less? How about the reverse, glasses that make people giraffes and so forth?

So if my understanding is correct, season 1 is officially canon, it DID happen, just in a different universe. What Alabaster saw was a faulty window into that universe. That window was fictional but the universe it tried to depict wasn’t... Darkbloom’s tech simulates alternate universes but cannot (yet) replicate them.

It's like Fuck Quest it's a reverse Sand Reckoner. Instead of one person seeing multiples possibilities/realities, we have multiples persons seeing the same reality.
But, as some anon already said, it's like we are the Sand Reckoner too, because we are "multiples possibilities" sending information for the "best outcome" to the user. This make OP and the thread the interface to all of this.
Anyway, this was an amazing chapter.

Neat detail I noticed in the FQ1 thread on re-reading it. When Alabaster visits the anime club, OP includes the old description of the weird club members verbatim from episode 2 of the original... but purposely cuts out Kimberly.

In a Q&A after the end of the first quest, I remember he said Kimberly had taken a lot of the traits that the planned Anime Club prez was supposed to have before she was scrapped in favor of Rose.

What the fuck are you talking about? Glasses don't create a false reality that tricks your brain into thinking that it's real, it simply enhances vision. They're more similar to virtual reality. When I take off my glasses I don't think the world is a blurry mess, I know my vision is just shitty. Nor do I believe that reality is splitting apart just because my glasses have a crack in them. That's like saying I don't believe that Japan is a real place just because I can't see it, that's stupid

>If somebody is born with a defect that makes every person they see a giraffe, who's to say that that person is wrong?
Well they are factual wrong but I understand your point. But this situation is completely different to that. Maybe if Alabaster was born into an augmented reality this would be a good comparison but he wasn't. The situation would be more similar to if you've lived your life for 20+ years and then you contract the giraffe disease. You know for a fact that it isn't reality. Blind people don't actually think the world is all black especially those who became blind later in life. Like your glasses statement your examples might sound good on paper but people in the real world don't actually think this way

David compared it to the alllegory of the cave but his logic had a fatal flaw. In the allegory the mc (don't remember if he had a name) had lived his whole life in the cave and then his current view of reality was proven wrong. What didn't happen was that after living in his own reality a guy with a magic headset asked him what his ideal reality was and put him into a dream like state. If that happened then it's safe to assume the mc would reject that reality.

David is assuming people would be quick to drop everything for this ideal world. His and your logic share a similar problem in that they both sound good on paper but that's it. I think that if I go to a random person on the street and ask them if they'd go into this magic, ideal, dream-like world they would say no. It might not make too much sense from a raw logically standpoint but people don't think with just logic. Most people aren't to eager to throw everything they worked for and experienced away. Every friend they had, every mistake they made, everything they worked hard for replaced by this new world created by someone else. Even if my life was shit I wouldn't just want to throw away all of those experiences for this fake reality. I, and I think most people, wouldn't want that. I want something I can say with no hesitation this is the real thing. This is genuine

Actually, I take it back. Or rather, that's definitely Sable's theme, but here's her beta theme as well, and what I would rather intend as a good closing track for this episode.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwjRMLHKGi8

It came up on shuffle last night while I was writing and I intended to post it here, but then I forgot. My bad.

---

Anyway, I'm really enjoying my Sunday I and look forward to running next week. This was a short one, the shortest since the first episode of the season,-- and a lot of the text last night was essentially copy-pasted from previous content. But what happened was pretty impactful, I think. It was fun seeing you all react to it. I didn't hit all the bases I would have liked, but that's always the case. Lingering to hit every single point I want to is how we end up in Palau!

It's a big time commitment when I run two days back to back and it really fills my weekend. Which is to say: I love running, but I prefer to keep it to one night when I run, as I did this time - for the sake of consistency, succinctness and moving things along. It's better for my schedule and hopefully also for yours.

I also don't want to get burnt out again because there is a pretty long road ahead (an entire other season!) -- I want to come to each new thread excited, with new ideas and lots of energy, as I have been.

Next week will likely have a very different structure than previous FQ threads. I'm still mulling how to do it. I hope you enjoy it.

One last announcement: as we come screaming down the home stretch, I am not going to announce how many episodes are left in the season after all. We are coming to a point where I could conceivably wrap it up at almost any point now. We could be done with the season in two weeks, three weeks, four... who knows? Rather than trying to fix the end, it's better to let it come as it may.

But it'll be soon.

So, watch out. It's a dangerous world.

We exist in a hell of our own making.

We hurt the one who would never do anything to hurt anyone.
I don't know what happened in his past, but what we did here today hurt him in a way that I don't know if we can forgive ourselves.

We have our own trauma, but clearly Alex does too, and we decided that hurting him in a deep and emotional way was our catharsis, because he was slow to react to a situation that we purposely deprived him of any information about.

If Amber took the name of the implant Alabaster got, do we know what the name of Camelia's implant was? I'm trying to put together a pattern to see if Alex might be one. Alexandria would actually be a great name for a data storage related device and I want to know if there could be a relation between that name and the names of the other implants.
>>
>>2736571

Pretty sure it was catachresis. She's using it as her last name now.
>>
>>2736571
Doing some research, both Galatea and Camellia are the names of flowers.

I don't remember if it's been brought up yet, but I also found that there was one Galatea who (successfully) prayed for Leto to change her daughter into a son (Leucippus). Did Alex get the next generation (daughter?) of the Galatea-type implant?

Also, if Cerise's parents are dead does that make her a Disney Princess?

>>2736590
Ah, I thought she just plucked that name out. That would make sense. What doesn't make sense is why she'd take the name of Alabaster's implant as her first name. I don't remember her explaining that.

Honestly though, I don’t get what Darkbloom’s end goal was here. I mean, ideal fantasies are nice and all, but they wouldn’t literally replace reality. We’re still just people in headsets. If everyone’s stuck in one of these fantasies how is anything going to run? Who’s going to feed us? How are we going to reproduce? Did he just want the human race to slowly die out, with everyone stuck in their own personalized, ideal, but ultimately false realities until we all either starved or died of old age or whatever?
>>
>>2737672
Darkbloom's stated that he's building it with the intent to end suffering. I'm interpreting that as a means to allow people to live out happy lives when they wouldn't be able to otherwise, such as patients with terminal illnesses or those who are trapped in a coma.
>>
>>2737692

>>
>>2737697

>>
>>2737740
Depends on which version.

Camelia stores general memory.

Galatea stores muscle memory and memory related to handling physical objects

Catachresis is the final prototype, collecting and storing all data, constantly feeding it to the user.
>>
So I just got to thinking about the entire situation relating to the burying of the tapes. There are SO MANY questions I have about it. Sable has seen the tapes, and its hinted Renee showed them to her. There are two possibilties here.

1. Sable could only have been hired in 2006 at the absolute earliest, and conservatively, 2007 at the latest, meaning that the tapes and prototype went unburied for 4 to 5 full years.

2. Darkbloom kept the original tapes and had them shows to Sable to bring her up to speed, and Renee buried another set of copies she made years earlier to leak later.

In any case, who buried the tapes and fourth prototype?
Renee was part of the plan to bury them, but who actually did it? Did she do it herself? Did she get someone outside of the company to do it so she wouldn't be implicated? Am I totally wrong and does Darkbloom know about the burial? What prompted them to bury the tapes anyway? If David knows, surely keeping them sealed would have been safer.

Then there's the mob. If the Mob knows then presumably Mara knows, but Tyrus works with the mob through the Club For Growth, and Cam/Amber works with them through Tyrus. If they're really allies, why did that gunfight even take place? Is there a fourth entity we don't know about?

The more I think about this, the less sense this whole situation makes to me.

So, not super familiar with the whole FUCK quest thing. I wasn't here for the /a/ season 1, but I stumbled upon thread 1 back when OP started season 2 here on /qst/.

I'm kind of conflicted. On the one hand, I really enjoyed the writing and effort put forth by OP on the first couple of threads I read here. I'm actually not super interested in the whole sex side of things and more just interested in seeing where this story is headed and what other fun external things OP uses like the twitter provided background and foreshadowing to the main story.

Is it worth getting involved in this rabbit hole, even if you aren't interested in the sex side of things? Is season 1 even worth reading, or am I pretty safe just sticking to season 2, since it seems like season 1 was a non-canon sort of deal based on comments on the first few threads. I'd guess I'd miss a lot of in-jokes and character interactions, but I don't know how important that all is.

Either way, thanks for doing something like this OP. Not super fond of just how much of an irredeemable asshole Alabaster is, but its definitely a fun read. The effort you've put forth at the very least is inspiring.

>>2738190

I've tried my hardest to make this story enjoyable for people like you who don't have the time or inclination to read the first quest. As you said, all you're really missing are in-jokes and a couple fun character details (like the excitement over seeing Renee again in this season, which probably didn't mean anything to you). Anything that's absolutely vital to know about season 1's canon is explained here as well (e.g. Alabaster being a quiz bowl player, or Rose having been a StuCo prez).

Season 1 was heavier on the sexual content and Alabaster was an even bigger asshole, so if those things are your least favorite aspects then you may not enjoy it.

In fact, Alabaster being a really loathsome asshole was the entire inspiration for Fuck Quest in the first place. The name "Alabaster Soliloquy" came to me after waking up from a nap and I just had to explore what kind of insufferable twat could actually deserve a name that ridiculous.

Season 1 is also generally more madcap/cartoony and (some people may disagree with me here) more comedic. There was a bit of discussion on this just today in this thread.

My personal favorite Kay moment was when Alabaster first sat down with her face to face. That exchange was a blast to write.

>Kay smirks. "This is a really great story I'm getting here. Almost as good as the hacking scandal. Two interns who hold - considerable sway over the multi-billion dollar company they work for... signals extreme chaos in the organization. On top of that, using the company as a proxy in their microcosm of the culture war - and also in their sadomasochistic war for total sexual control over each other's bodies... and on top of all THAT, they're cousins."

>"Once removed!" You shout, loud enough to draw stares from nearby tables. Lady perks his ears up and rises to his feet. You lower your voice. "Once removed. First cousins, once removed. It's not like we're just 'cousins,' for godsakes. We're not. We're removed. Once."

>"Uh huh," Kay drawls. "And her mother also legally adopted you. So Rose isn't just your cousin, she's also your sister."

>You bang a fist on the table. "Step sister! That doesn't count!" Others are staring again, Lady is barking, so you draw back to an insistent hiss. "Step sibling incest doesn't count, everyone knows that. It's not real incest. It's not even CLOSE-"

>"It sounds like you have very strong opinions about this. Would you like to elaborate some more?"

>>
>>2738190
Season 1 is not REQUIRED to get into the series but I HIGHLY recommended it. One of the most fun parts of FQ is the memes and in-jokes and I feel like your missing out on the full experience if you don't read it. Take this episode for example. If you haven't read season 1 you probably won't get how big of a deal the ep 11 milestone is or appreciate the first thread semi-recreated in qst format

The fucking is a lot more relevant in season 1 but I don't see any real problem with it. The sex itself can be really hit or miss with me a lot of the time but there's so many different events that unless you don't have a dick you'll probably find at least one of them hot. And even if you don't have a dick they can still be enjoyable. Sure a lot of the time it's just sex for the sake of sex but there's also plenty of times where sex is love fueled and the next natural step in the relationship, especially when it's for the first time. Like when we finally officially fucked mom (tsundere). It was satisfying cause there was so much pent up sexual tension between them that sex was necessary to release it all so the relationship could reach it's next stage of development. Harem just works a lot better in hentai most of the time imo cause there's an outlet for the tension between them and the fans of that character can always have those even if they aren't the main girl.

FQ just wouldn't be the same without the sex

Can I just say that reading FQ can be super frustrating sometimes. All I want to do is shout to the heavens about it, but I can't let some of my friends know what kind of shit I masturbate to. Especially not while I'm wrestling with how I still feel about some of the newfound fetishes I acquired

>>2736599
She probably fell for Ally's past of rampant arson the way Vivian fell for our Quiz Bowl performance.
>>
>>2738386
Also I'm crossing my fingers that the 9th Girl is Noelle, but I get this sinking feeling it's probably Renee.

Or fuck I dunno, maybe we might get a curve ball and get to fuck Weeb-Rose. At this point anything's possible
>>
>>2738413
>>2738369
She exists. SOMEWHERE.
>>
What if R̛̙̼͚͉͈̜o̥̭̙͎̹̙s̨͇̖ͅe̛͙̼͉̬̞̪'s real-world analogue is Darkbloom's bastard?
>>
>>2738413
Why would you think that the 9th girl isn't Renee? It doesn't make any sense if isn't her. She was added to the chart and given the whole fug treatment. If he really wanted to add Noelle for some reason he would just make her the 10th girl. Don't know why you'd even want her though. Especially over our goddess Renee
>>
>>2738413
Oh and I'd love weeb Rose so much you don't even know. I hope we can at least get her implemented next season if she can't get fit into this one

The Sand Reckoner is a truly awful machine. It takes the sins of an infinite number of people and places them inside one individual.
>>
>>2738079
Since every author puts a little bit of themselves and the people they know into their characters, I wanted to see how much of OP's answers matched with the cast of FQ. Unless I'm bad at counting, here are the results.

> Cerise - 8
> Kay - 5
> Galatea - 5
> Carte - 5
> Rose - 3
> Vivian - 3
> Ally - 2
> Whitney - 1
> Camellia - 1
> Alex - 1
>>
>>2739228
I remember OP saying that the secret to Cerise being so popular is that he put the opinions of the average /a/non into her, so it makes sense that he’s most similar to her.

Interesting that he shares at least 1 answer with everyone. Is OP’s ultimate fetish to be his own harem?

How many unique answers?
>>
I disagree when Sabel wholeheartedly for reasons beyond spite. First off, people who change the world do so by accident, those who try to do so are tyrants imposing their will on everyone else.
Second, her not caring that the man backing her work is evil as it's all for the greater good, that's just treating the symptoms and not the causes. This "perfect world" is slapping a band-aid on a wound Darkbloom will be ready to inflict again and again on us and many others. His instrumentality will be another tool for those in power to calm the masses, and will not provide any benefit to areas outside of his control.
Finally, Man chose to step outside the garden for a reason. Even if it means we can't go back in the garden, we still have a reason, or make that many reasons, to stay outside in the real world.

I just don't see a reason why her innovation is the best fit for the world. It's not enough that her method should succeed at what it does, it's that alternative ways of living should fail.

Sable has directly stated that she doesn’t agree with Darkbloom’s plan for her technology. He wants to stick everyone into their own personal matrix (virtual reality). She wants to give everyone more information about the world to help fix problems in real life (augmented reality).

I think it’s clear that despite Darkbloom’s platitudes about ending suffering, he really wants control. Sable seems to understand this but works for him for utilitarian reasons.

Sable’s ideas are different and not centered on controlling people, in fact she wants to empower people. Whether her tech is the right way to do it is a different discussion (can people handle total knowledge?) but she is unequivocally better than Darkbloom.

OP I don't know what you do in your day-to-day life and whether it makes you feel fulfilled, and I can't speak for the rest of your readers. As for myself, I can say that every Saturday since you started FQ again has been something to look forward to. Every weekend I make a big deli sandwich and sit down to relax and enjoy your reading with a tide of other anons and every thread is a flash of color and excitement in my life. From the bottom of my heart, I adore you and I thank you.
but pls no kill waifus
>>
>>2739250
Yeah for me, a big part of why I kinda got tired of her in FQ1 was BECAUSE her character was little more than "an /a/non you can fuck".

In FQ2 she's a whole lot more than that now. She's dealing with the grief of losing both her parents and having to provide for her family. Her confused but real feelings towards Gal and Ally. All this on top of losing her past passions and not know what to do with her life.

When I was gushing earlier I really wanted to refrain myself from saying something as pretentious and naval gazing as:

Boy am I glad I never said that. I would've made a fool of myself

Galatea: Lewd Sub
Camelia: Lewd Dom

Guys, crazy theory time. Hear me out.

What if Amber died on that operating table? What if Catachresis really was buried with the tapes afterwards?
What if Camelia is on some mission of vengeance against Darkbloom and wears the eyepatch as some sort of badge of honor towards her vendetta?
What if Amber's consciousness is trapped inside Sand Reckoner?
>>
>>2742813
Monumentally pissed doesn’t even begin to cover it. His wife loves Alabaster like a son but I think he was always leery of Alabaster and doesn’t consider him kin. IF he helps Alabaster at all it will be purely because Rose is also involved.
>>
>>2743154
I wouldn't go that far. Saul was strict as fuck in the one scene we saw him in, but I'm sure that was at least partially because he cares about Alabaster's well-being and future.
>>
>>2743154
He was just angry that his surrogate son fucked up so hard which shows that he cares to at least some degree.

Or like, the one attorney we know. Granted, with this episode's title I assmue we've already called him and there's gonna be a minor timeskip.

Ally has his phone with him which means Rose knows where he is. She’ll see him carted away to the FBI office or jail or whatever and probably call Saul for us.
>>
>>2743600
Imagine how fucked we would be across the board if we would have removed Rose's tracker.
>>
>>2743624
It hasn't really helped us at all though. It nearly got her and us killed at Palo Alto Waste and Water Management, and made her run, guns blazing, into a journalist's apartment. That's all it's done so far. With that track record, she's gonna track us to the FBI and fuck that up somehow too.
>>
>>2742875
>Then he'll see the last message we sent to Galatea and walk out of the room to leave us to our fate.

"I was referring to the potential orgy we were thinking of planning."

I was gonna go with something like poker night or anime night but honestly this seems more like what Ally would say.

Well we know it starts with Postal Service - Such Great Heights.

I can't make an entire playlist right now but it definitely also includes The Bravery - Bad Sun, and probably ends with some sappy Death Cab For Cutie song like Passenger Seat or I Will Follow You Into the Dark.

(bonus detail: she often listens to Death Cab's "I Will Possess Your Heart" to pump herself up).

>>2742897
What kind of Indomie did you get? They have regular soup-type ramen which isn't that great, and stir fry noodles like pic related, which are excellent. You also have to make sure you follow the directions and strain the noodles after boiling them.

>>2740569
We'll definitely see some more flashbacks. I'm sure Rose wasn't the only one who was... surprised to see someone actually ask Alabaster to prom.

OP, the quest started live on Saturday, 4/21 right? The FNCNN report even aired that night after we did lewd things with Whitney for the very first time.

But a the beginning of Episode 2, it seems to be indicated that we did all that with her on Thursday night? And then continued all the way through the weekend. The text logs between her and Rose even seem to support that.

Continuity error? Or something else?

No, you've got it right: the storyline of season 2 begins Thursday, April 19 2018.

Alabaster interviews that morning, gets hired in the afternoon, and the story about the hacking scandal breaks immediately afterwards; Alabaster and Whitney spend that weekend cooped up in Ally's dorm; the story about Cerise in FNCNN drops on Saturday.

The chat log between Rose and Whitney shows the same timeline: Whitney messages Rose just an hour or so after taking Ally's cherry.

I've been pretty careful about keeping the timeline consistent, but I understand it might have been confusing starting it a little out of sync with real time.
