Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

Last thread, we had just finished getting our magic gear examined and were heading off to the Capital's markets.

Leaving the Mage College, you head to the Capital’s market. Entering into the market square, the sights, sounds, and smells of your last glimpse of the market come back stronger than ever. While this market was larger than the one in Resis, the placement of the stalls was better. Even with a large, milling crowd of market goers, you could still navigate your way through the market quite easily.

Among the produce and other sundry stands, you see four that might be of use to you:

>Weapon Smith
>Armor Smith
>Alchemist
>Bauble Merchant
>Search for a specific merchant [Specify]

Baldr Blooddragon:
Equipment:
>Full Plate Armor
>Halberd
>Short sword
>Holy Blade [Dormant]
>Coin of Fate (re-roll 1 die with a coin flip [1=crit fail 2=crit success])
>Helmet of Clear Vision (+2 on perception checks, can see through minor illusions)
>1 energy potion
Tool Kits:
>blacksmith mundane tool kit
>carpenter mundane tool kit
>Stone carver mundane tool kit
>alchemists kit
>337 Gold [94 in coin]
Books:
>Herbalism Primer
Perks:
>Bush Wacker: Easier to spot and set ambushes
>Elf War Veteran: +2 to your defense against non-magical ranged attacks and +2 to your dice damage.
>Commanding Voice: Your words will be heard over the loudest of noises and when directly giving orders, the recipients of those orders gain a +2 to their rolls. You also gain +1 when intimidating others.

The longer you stand in the crowded market, the less confident you feel about making a purchase. In the end, you turn around and exit the market instead heading back to the inn you spent the previous night in. Sitting yourself at one to the tables in the barroom you spent your remaining time before your audience with the queen cleaning your armor and weapons. A few hours later your armor and halberd gleam from a fresh polishing. Donning your equipment again, you proceed out of the inn to meet back up with the Colonel.

When you arrive at the garrison, you find the Colonel heading out his door, in his parade armor. Long cloak and polished armor cutting an imposing figure, the Colonel turns to you. It looked like the Colonel had caught up on some sleep since you last saw him as his now enlivened features perk up at the notice of your state. “Ah well done Sergeant,” he says nodding approvingly “I’d say you’re ready to attend a royal ball.”

“You as well sir,” you respond snapping a salute to the Colonel.

“Come,” he says striding past you “we don’t want to be late now.”

Coming up alongside and matching the Colonel’s quick pace you ask “If you don’t mind me asking sir, do you know what the Queen’s like, I want to know what I should expect.”

The Colonel turns his head to glance at you, before facing forward once again. “I can’t tell you much lad, I only ever met the Queen once, and that was when I got promoted. From what I remember she didn’t say much, just congratulated me on my accomplishments and granted me my rank. She seemed like any royalty; graceful, strong, larger than life, but the entire time she was there the hairs on the back of my neck wouldn’t go down. Something about her was just unnerving. My advice to you lad, keep your head down for as long as possible until she calls upon you, and then act like you would in front of any other person of high station. I have a feeling you wouldn’t want to get on her bad side.”

As the Colonel was speaking several body guards fell into step with the both of you as you made your way to the Queen’s tower. Deep into the wealthier districts, situated around the base of her obsidian stone tower was a large fortress. Striding through the front gates you find the central compound filled with royal guards standing attention, pikes and armor glittering in the afternoon sun. The Colonel strode though compound at quick pace staying hot on his heels you follow him into a small room at the base of the tower. Once inside a set of double doors slid closed behind you.

“Hold on to a wall” the Colonel said as he himself leaned against one “We’re in for a ride.”

Suddenly you feel your insides drop to your feet and you nearly topple over as you slam into one of the walls of the room. As the sensation lessened you pull away from the wall and walk over to the single window in the room. Looking through the glass you see the compound fast pulling away from you. Reeling away from the window, disoriented by the change in height you fall onto your ass. Helping you up the Colonel said “Yeah, the view got me too the first time I came up here. Just hold on to the wall, we are almost there.” Leaning against the wall you manage to stay on your feet as you feel your guts ascend upwards before settling again. The double door opened once again revealing a hallway lined with more guards. Stumbling forward you and the Colonel walk through the hallway to another set of doors, these ones fancifully engraved with silver inlays. The guards standing in front of the doors halt you and the Colonel. “One moment sirs,” says one of the guards “Her majesty’s other guests have yet to arrive, and the Queen wishes to see you all at once.”

“I see,” the Colonel mutters turning to face the other end of the hallway.

“I’m sure they will be here soon sirs,” the guard says setting himself back against the doors. True to the man’s words moments later the door at the other end of the hallway open and marched out into the hallway were Selenas, and Valenca. Both had been bound, but only Valenca had been gagged. Once they were marched to the doors, the two guards swung the doors open to reveal a large throne room and sitting atop a raised dais sat the Queen herself.

“Enter,” the Queen said, her soft voice carrying easily across the room. Walking forward into the room Selenas shoots you a fearful look before being forced to her knees by one of the guards. “So these are the two heroes who caused be no end of trouble,” the Queen said her voice gaining a hard edge, “Bring them forward.” Pulled back on to their feet the two women are marched forward until they stood directly in front of the dais. “Remove this one’s gag there is no more need for it.” One of the guards ungagged Valenca as the Queen continued. “Sergeant Baldr, I have read your interrogation reports, and I must say you have done an admirable job with the resources you had. It-“

“So it’s the Queen bitch herself,” Valenca cut in once her gag had been pulled out of her mouth, “What’s on the agenda for today. Torture some orphans, kill-“

Before Valenca can finish she slams head first into the ground. Sighing the Queen rises to her feet “I thought the interrogation could wait but I guess it will have to happen now.” The Queen raises her hands and the torches lighting the room dim, the air chilled until you could see your breath curl out of your mouth. Black tendrils flicked out from the Queen and they approached both Valenca and Selenas.

Your words to Selenas jump to the fore front of your mind as the tendrils snake out toward both of them women. “It will be okay Selenas, I promise that you survive this.” You open your mouth and begin to start forward, but your survival instincts kick in and you restrain yourself, clamping your mouth shut and returning to an attentive stance.

Not noticing, the queen continues working her magic. Raising her head off of the floor, Valenca’s smashed nose drips blood as she looks up at the Queen “Ooo scary,” she mocks spiting some blood at the Queen that hits one of the steps leading up to the throne.

“Let’s start with you,” the Queen says, a slight eagerness edging into her voice. Fixing her gaze on Valenca the Queen’s eyes bulge open wide and begin to glow faintly as inky black tongues of darkness wrap around Valenca and bind her tight. An odd silence fills the throne room before Valenca lets out a blood curdling scream and thrashes violently against the darkness binding her to no avail. The Queen smiles viciously as she contines to stare at Valenca “Stay out, STAY OUUUAAHH” Valenca screams as she continues struggle. Valenca’s screams increase in volume as her bodily struggles start to subside. Beside her Selenas can only watch on in horror as her once friend screamed in agony. Eventually Valenca’s screams subside and her body goes limp. The tendrils slip away from Valenca leaving her to thump on the stone floor. The Queen licks her lips and turns to Selenas “Well that was enlightening,” The Queen said as the tendrils snaked their way up and around Selenas. “Now let’s see what you didn’t tell us.”

>1 Success

As the tendrils snake up and cover Selenas, her eyes widen fearfully and she begins to whimper and when the Queen’s eyes fall upon her she lets out a terrified shriek. Selenas begins to struggle and screams much like Valenca had just done. Thankfully Selenas’s interrogation was shorter than the one Valenca had suffered and moments later Selenas’s unconscious form collapsed on to the floor.

With the interrogations finished the Queen lowered her arms and the torchlight in the room flared back to life. “Come forward gentlemen,” the Queen said her voice now sweet and soft. Stepping cautiously you and the Colonel approach the Queen. Stopped in front of the dais, the Queen smiles and gives a soft giggle. “I must say Sergeant Baldr, you have a strange way of treating your prisoners. Tell me do you always give such encouragement to your captives.”

“I did not believe I had to resort to torture at that time your grace. She did not seem to understand the damage the rebels would do to the empire and they kept her in the dark because of it.”

The Queen closes her eyes and nods solemnly for a moment speaking. “Yes I saw as much, truly a pity that most of the fools in the hero’s service can’t see the damage they do much like this one.” The Queen said gesturing to the unconscious form of Valenca. “But enough of such matters let us move on to the real reason I called you here Sergeant. Your actions as acting regional warden and garrison commander must be answered. Colonel Libitz your report if you please.”

“At once your majesty,” the Colonel answers as he snaps to full attention. “From reports submitted by Sergeant Baldr, My Lieutenant, and statements collect from locals. I have assessed the Sergeant’s actions from the time he took over as acting commander to the present. Following the death of his superior and the destruction of most of the garrison forces, Sergeant Bladr managed to rally the survivors and defeat the hero’s attack on the garrison, capturing a hero and several peasants in the process. Following this the Sergeant then proceeded to secure the garrison and prepare its forces for another attack sending out a request for reinforcements in the process. When this threat failed to appear, the Sergeant performed reconnaissance on the rebelling village, and decided to wait for reinforcements before attempting pacification. Later several curious villagers came to investigate the garrison to which the Sergeant responded to by announcing himself the new warden and pacifying the village by galvanizing them against the hero’s cause. This is when the Sergeant made several concessions to the villagers to help in keeping them loyal. Following these events a second hero attempted to rescue the first resulting in her capture by the Sergeant, by which time me and my forces arrived. On the road to the capital the Sergeant displayed quick thinking and courage saving both his life and the lives of several of my men.” The Colonel, finished with his report took a breath gave you a glance then returned his attention to the Queen.

“I see,” said the Queen, “Our Sergeant has been rather busy as of late hasn’t he. Well Colonel what is your evaluation of your Sergeant’s deeds?”

“Sergeant Baldr has performed admirably your grace. His military and martial prowess is above reproach.” You can feel your chest swell with pride at the Colonels words “However, the Sergeant has shown a failing when it comes to governance. Although he pacified the village, he failed to gain the villagers support rather he pointed their anger elsewhere. Along that train of thought, he failed to punish those who had taken up arms, sentencing them to hard labor rather than summary execution and allowing the pacified villagers to retrieve the corpses of the traitors. This has led me to the conclusion that while the Sergeant is an excellent solider and commander, he is unsuited to deal with some of the harsher realities of his duties.”

“Hmm, anything to add Sergeant Baldr,” the Queen asked turning to face you “Perhaps you can offer some explanation as to the doubts brought up by the Colonel?”

"Your Grace, with a weakened garrison, attempting to subdue the village with force would have been an unwise decision and a potential waste of your resources. Instead of using the stick, I used the carrot. The Queen places her fingers on her lips evaluating your words “Well said Sergeant; however your words reveal a certain lack of understanding on your part. You merely addressed a symptom of a larger problem; you say you have pacified the village when in fact you have only done it for a short while. The villagers turned on the heroes after you showed them that their lives were being misused, what will they do I wonder, if they find out that a military generals blunder caused the deaths of their sons. Will they accept their deaths saying they died for our queen or will they take up arms once again? The Colonel is correct Sergeant, a stronger hand was necessary. The villagers had no idea the garrison was depleted as you said, with the firebrands among them lying dead on the floor of the garrison, you could have easily meted out appropriate punishments for those traitors.” Pausing the Queen composes herself before continuing. “I will not fault you for those mistakes Sergeant, you couldn’t have known the full extent of your actions inexperienced in governance as you are. That inexperience however has shown me that someone else will have to take over as warden of that region.”

Look on the bright side: if her argument is that the dungeon needs someone better at governance then by her own logic whoever gets sent out there must be better at running the outpost than us. The new warden may or may not be annoying, but ultimately Baldr doesn't seem to have any problems with authority figures as long as they are competent. This could honestly be a better outcome than if we ended up in control.

“As you will it, my Queen,” you say bowing your head in deference. Yet the outcome of her judgment leaves you somewhat dejected and you slump somewhat notably. Noticing this, the Queen speaks again.

“Fear not Sergeant Baldr, your actions have proven to me one thing. A man of your talents would better serve me away from that garrison.” At her words you perk up rising from your bow in shock. “That’s right Sergeant, if you should chose; I have an assignment that I think would be perfect for you. “O-of course Queen, I will accept this mission,” you stammer, regaining your senses.

“Excellent Sergeant, or should I say Captain?” the Queen giggles at her own words before continuing. “Now enough of all this serious talk, you will receive your orders from my Spymaster Captain Baldr. For now though we must talk of your reward.”

“Reward?” you say cocking your head slightly.

“Yes a reward Captain after all, you did bring me two heroes from the rebellion’s forces. For such a great accomplishment, I will allow you two boons from me. They could be anything you want. With the Queen staring down at you, your thoughts race quickly. “I will accept something from your armory,” you quickly blurt out.

“And for your other boon?” The queen asks.

You find your eyes falling to the unconscious body of Selenas “I promise that you survive” your words to her jump once more into your head. Looking back up at the Queen whose eyes stare amusedly down at you, you make your second request. “I would like to have Selenas as my ward.” There is a shuffle and click of armor as the Colonel and several of the guards in the room turn to you. At their attention you stiffen and brace yourself.

The Queen’s laughter breaks the tense silence “I thought you might request that, you certainly did spent some wonderful time together, and I was wondering if you felt anything for her. She certainly had thoughts and feelings on you, would you like to hear them?” the Queen asks her voice full of merriment. “Oh but that would ruin the fun wouldn’t it,” She continues before you can even think of a response. “Very well Captain, the girl is yours, but on one condition. You are to be assigned a Commissar; he will keep an eye on both you and the girl.” The Queen says, a sickly sweet smile stretching her lips.

You nod “As you will it your majesty,”

“Good, you may take the girl with you when you go. My chamberlain will show you to the armory, pick out anything you like, you are dismissed Captain.”

Just like that you bow deeply before collecting Selenas in your arms and heading out of the throne room. Once outside, a hunched over old man in fine robes stops you. “Come with me Captain the armory is this way,” he says walking you into the room at the end of the hall. This time, you brace for the decent and the room falls, but only a short way before its doors open to a smaller hall way with many doors lining its sides. The old man leads you out and to one of the door. Unlocking the door the old man pushes it open to reveal a large room full of equipment of all sorts Weapon racks and display cases lined one side of the room, and on another suits of armor along with miscellaneous pieces of armor. The rest of the room was occupied by boxes showing off strange contraptions. “Well, Go ahead,” the Chamberlain beckoned “Pick out one thing,”

Setting Selenas down against a wall, you head over to examine the armor sets and pieces. On mannequin stands sat some well-crafted sets of armor. The sets themselves seemed to be separated by varying degrees of protection with suits of heavy, medium, and light armor. Behind the sets were individual pieces of armor that hummed with magical investments. As you examined the armor section, the Chamberlain came up behind you and spoke loudly surprising you slightly.

“You may select either one of the sets or a single piece of magic infused armor,” he grumbled.

>Take and armor set [Specify (Heavy, Medium, or Light)] (These are just like a regular set you could get from any armor smith, but they are extremely well crafted and have extra defense)

Walking past the mannequins, you head to the collection of magically enhanced armor pieces. All of the pieces looked wonderful and each of them made you skin tingle as you passed hands over them, but three pieces in particular seemed to emit stronger auras than the rest. Stopping in front of and examining the items more closely, the Chamberlain explains their enchantment. Picking up a rust spotted gauntlet, the Chamberlain speaks.

“That is the Hand of the Inquisitor, clasping it around the neck of a victim forces them to answer the first Question you ask truthfully and to the best of their knowledge. After answering however, the gauntlet will squeeze tight and suffocate or break the neck of the victim.”

Grimacing slightly, you set the gauntlet down and examine a rather normal looking breastplate save for a pair of hands engraved into the center of the plate, clasped around a clear blue gem. “This is the Plate of the Savior’s Mercy, it is said that this plate will turn away a killing blow in the heat of combat, however it will only save you once before its magic must recharge.”

Nodding thoughtfully you proceed on to the third item which looked like a short black cape that would fall about to your lower back if you were to put it on. Running your hand over the material it feels soft as silk. “That particular item was crafted by our Queen herself and it is named The Queen’s Embrace. When wearing this at night or sufficient darkness, the cape will extend and show its true power. Persons or items surrounded by the cape will become barely visible in the dark, and will emit very little noise.”

Pulling away from the cape on its stand, you look back over the three items and weigh their value.

Picking up the breastplate you say, “I’ll take this one,”

“Excellent choice,” as strange voice nearly shouts into your ear. Startled you nearly drop the armor as you turn to face the owner of the voice. Standing off to your right was a tall muscular man in form fitting leather armor. Seeing you jump, the man barks out a laugh and slaps a heavy hand on your shoulder. “Sorry,” the man says trying to reign in his laughter, “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“Spymaster you know that you aren’t allowed in here,” the Chamberlain says coming to stand in close by the Spymaster, in an attempt to intimidate the man. An attempt doomed to fail as the Chamberlain was half the size of the man. Surprisingly the large Spymaster shrinks back away from the bent over old Chamberlain.

“I’m sorry for intruding Chamberlain, but I am here to see our new captain and give him his orders. I promise not to take anything.”

Grunting and giving the Spymaster a disapproving look, the Chamberlain steps back. “Fine give him his orders and then get out.”

Bowing deeply the Spymaster steps in close to you and bringing his arm around your side pulls you in close to his side. “Alright Captain,” he whispers into your ear, “The Queen wants you to handle some supply issues she’s been having in the north. As far as my informants can tell me the supplies coming in from the desert have been disappearing or coming up short. The town of Filt is the last town in the Kingdom before the desert lands, and my men tell me it is the town that some of the caravans never reach.” Pausing for a moment, the Spymaster shoots a glance in the Chamberlain’s direction. “Anything else you need to know?” he asks anxiously.

“The natives?” The Spymaster says scratching his stubbly beard thoughtfully, “The desert people’s fall into two categories honest merchants, or bloodthirsty mercenaries. As for your other questions, I couldn’t really answer much on the specifics of the attacks you’d be better off asking my agent Hisa in the town, he should have more specifics on the attacks. And as for the matter of reinforcements you’ll have to work with your personal retinue, the Queen doesn’t want to march an army over there and start another war on that front while a rebellion is going on. Although if you run into a large enemy force, I guess you could requisition some troops from the region’s garrison.”

“Thanks for the information Spymaster.”

“Hey, it’s my job. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go.” The Spymaster says releasing you from his one armed hug, “You don’t mind if I have this do you?” He asks pointing a thumb toward the Queen’s Embrace cape. Before you could answer though the Spymaster snagged the cape, draped it over his shoulders and sprinted out to the armory laughing heartily as he dashed through the tower.

“Come back here you thieving bastard!” The old Chamberlain swore a, despite his appearance ran after the Spymaster with surprising speed leaving you alone the unconscious Selenas. After donning your new plate and picking Selenas back up, one of the tower’s guards came into the armory and escorted you back down into the tower courtyard.

Upon arriving in the courtyard, a man dressed in rather faded military issue armor and stinking of booze walked up to you and snapped a formal salute before second guessing the gesture and standing at ease in front of you and taking a swig from his canteen. “Commissar Randolf… hic… here to supervise you,” he pauses slightly “Sir?” he finishes tilting his head slightly unsure of his last words.

>A pleasure to meet you Randolf. (Shake his hand).

“A pleasure to meet you Randolf,” you say extending your hand to shake his, a move you find difficult with Selenas in your arms.

Seeing your gesture Randolf reaches out and gives your hand a furious shake before musing aloud “I think that’s the first time I shaken an officer’s hand when he had a woman in his arms.” Releasing your hand he squints more closely at Selenas and with sudden recognition he gasps “You’re beautiful.” He quickly snatches one of Selenas’s hand and kisses the back of it while bowing in deference “Commissar Randolf, at your service milady,” he says slurring slightly.

The drunk fool doesn’t even know she’s unconscious.

“Enough of that Randolf, the young lady has to rest and we must get going.” You say disdainfully as you pull Selenas back from him.

Randolf looks up and squints at you, seemingly to have forgotten you entirely, before his face relaxes and a smile returns to his lips. “Of course Captain, the Queen has given us horses and supplies; they are waiting in the western gate stables, so we can leave anytime you wish.” He finishes as he performs a tipsy attempt at a salute.

“Excellent.” You say considering your options for what to do next.

You debate the benefits of leaving now and getting to Filt sooner rather than later, but as you look down at the unconscious Selenas in your arms and the descending sun you decide to stay for at least one more day.

“Let’s go and get the young lady to bed.” You say heading out of the fort’s courtyard and to the inn you stayed in last night. This time you order a double room for you and Selenas so that you can keep an eye on her condition. You lay her down on one of the beds and seat yourself on the one across from her. Her breathing was steady and her muscles were lax, she was sleeping peacefully now.

Stumbling into the doorway Randolf surveys the room. He looks at Selenas to you and back before you speak. “We’re going to stay here for today, she needs to rest.”

“Alright Captain sir,” he says with a salute “If you want me I’ll be at the bar.” Turing on his heel he walks out of the room.

Several hours pass with no change to Selenas’s condition and it is nearly dark outside before her eyes snap open and she lets out a scream of terror which quickly fades into sobs as she curls into a quivering ball.
