“The peasants are dead, Tsarevich,” The pale witch laughs as she and her sisters approach you with clear malice, all three of them nude and covered in crimson blood, “Put down your sword and I promise that we’ll show you pleasures beyond your wildest dreams!”

“Be careful about this one,” One of the other witches says in a more cautious voice, blood dripping from her twisted razor sharp fingernails, “They say that Prince Ivan is the greatest swordsman in this land, that he had killed Koschei the Lich. Killing this hero won’t be as easy as killing all the others.”

“He is just one man,” The third witch says derisively as she licks the blood around her mouth, “There are three of us, no way he can kill us all! But why don’t you join us instead, Ivan Tsarevich? Sign your name in the Black Book and the Great Master will allow you to live for a hundred years and more!”

>Let the witches come to you and then give them the taste of your steel

Witches like to think of themselves as hunters and humans as their prey. So they are always taken back when a man shows no fear and charges at them.

However, this is still an extremely dangerous gamble. If luck is on your side, you may take the witch by surprise and incapacitate her. But if you are unlucky, the witch can injure you badly.

You take a deep breath, run towards the nearest witch and swing your sword, hoping that it will be enough to behead her. With one witch dead, fighting the other two should be considerably easier.

Luck seems to be on your side as you manage to catch the nearest witch by surprise. Before she has any chance to use her razor sharp nails, you swing your sword and behead her. The fight is over in an instant and the witch’s head hits the snow-covered ground before her sisters have any chance to intervene.

Instead of crimson blood, a viscous dark liquid flows from the witch’s neck. Perhaps she had been born a human, but she had later sold her humanity in exchange for dark powers and turned into something far more malevolent.

“You’ll pay for this!” One of the surviving witches screams in a voice filled with hatred once she realizes what you have just done to her sister. You stand alone against the two surviving witches, hoping that luck will favor you one more time.

These witches are used to murdering defenseless peasants and then feasting on their blood, but they are not used to fighting experienced hunters like you. You move closer to the two surviving witches and swing your sword. One of them try to rip your throat apart with her nails, but your sword is faster, much faster.

Before the second witch’s body can hit the snow-covered ground, you turn your attention to the other witch, hoping to keep take this one as prisoner. The last witch proves more skilled than her sisters and you almost get your throat ripped apart by her nails, but luck still seems to be on your side.

The witch tries one last desperate attack, ready to sacrifice her own life to take yours. Luckily for you, you are skilled enough with the sword to dodge her attack and counterattack at the same time. You had wished to capture the third witch alive, but the blow proved fatal.

“So you are as good as they say,” The last witch says in between labored breathes, black blood flowed out of the fatal wound in her chest, “You may kill me here, Tsarevich, but know that the Great Master will always win in the end! The Pale Queen has already reached the capital, you have no hope to stop her!”

> Tell me more about the demon you call Great Master, I swore that I will stop him!

“Tell me more about the Pale Queen,” You ask the dying witch as she bleeds out, “Who is she and what is she doing in the capital?”

“You haven’t been to the capital in a year, have you, Prince Ivan?” The pale witch tries to laugh, but ends up coughing out corrupted dark blood, “You will meet her the day your return home. She will avenge me and my sisters. You will….suffer….your father…….”

The witch stops moving then, leaving you to ponder her last words. Your father is the one who had tasked you with hunting down witches and warlocks, but it has been over a year since you last met him. You wonder what might have changed during your time away from the capital.

-

“You killed three witches alone, after they had massacred an entire village!” Oleg says in a shocked voice after he and the rest of the guards find you in the snow-covered forest, “While taking no wound whatsoever! I had heard that you are the greatest swordsman in the land, Tsarevich, but I never knew that you are this good!”

“Thank you, Oleg,” You tell the young guardsman in a calm voice, “Luck was on my side during this fight, but it could have gone either way.”

You prefer to stay humble and not brag about your abilities. Perhaps that is why your guards respect you more than other nobles. Most of your guards have followed you on this hunt for over a year now, several have been killed by witches and warlocks, while many more have taken wounds.

Yet those who survived still follow you wordlessly into danger. You feel blessed to have secured the unwavering loyalty of the men who followed you.

-

“Tsarevich, we have received some odd news from the capital,” One of the older guardsmen says in an uncomfortable voice as you leave the forest, “It seems that your father, Tsar Aleksandr have taken a young woman as his wife.”

>That has to be a lie, father has stayed loyal to my mother’s memory for twenty-three years after her death! He has no reason to remarry at this age!

>He is an old man who has suffered countless tragedies – including the deaths of my mother and elder brothers. If he finds comfort in the embrace of a young woman, I have no right to oppose him.

>How dare he insults my mother’s memory like this! Once I return to the capital, the whore he had married will suffer for this insult!

>We must return to the capital at once. I have a bad feeling about this, it feels like something very wrong is about to happen there.

“We must return to the capital at once,” You say in a composed voice, keeping your face calm so as not to unnerve the younger guards, even though you personally feel quite uneasy, “I have a bad feeling about this, like something very wrong is about to happen there.”

“As you command, Tsarevich,” The older guardsman nods respectfully, as you and your guards ride out of the ominous forest covered in snow and blood. Your men seem surprised by the unexpected news as well, but they are careful not to speak their thoughts out loud, at least not while you are present.

Your father was only thirty-seven years old when your mother died giving birth to you. It was expected of him to take a new wife, but instead he chose to stay loyal to your late mother’s memory. Twenty-three years have passed since then and your father had remained a widower until now.

“My lady wife has left me three sons, there is no need for me to marry again,” Your father had told the court, confident that the future of the throne is secure. Yet both of your elder brothers have died since then, leaving you as the crown prince and the sole heir to the throne.

Perhaps your father has grown weak in his old age, afraid of dying alone and desperate to find comfort in the embrace of a younger woman. Or perhaps he is afraid that you will die young like your elder brothers had, ending the bloodline and plunging the land into civil war.

You feel a pang of guilt for the risk you had taken today. Your guards had wanted to follow you into the forest, but you felt that it would be easier to find the witches hunting alone. If you had died here today, your bloodline would have ended, leaving your father alone in the capital.

Perhaps some young harlot took advantage of the old man’s fear and loneliness, climbed into his bed and promised him more sons to replace you. Or maybe she is an ambitious noblewoman, eager to raise her status and willing to spread her legs for an old man's cock to make that happen.

“Tsarevich, we should the reach the capital in two weeks at our current pace,” Oleg’s words pull you out of your thought, you had recruited the young soldier only three months ago, but he has proven himself to be quite loyal, “Will that be enough or should we push the horses to their limit?”

>Push the horses to travel faster, we can always find replacements if they die from exhaustion (One week)

“We will travel at our current pace, there is no need to be cruel to the animals,” You make your decision known to Oleg, who passes on your order to the rest of the soldiers.

Your horses have carried you obediently through treacherous landscapes for over a year. They have been your faithful companions in rain, thunderstorms, snowfall and blizzards. And you are not the sort of man to abuse those who followed you – it matters little if they are just common soldiers, uneducated peasants or even mute animals.

-

You and your men arrive at the gates of the capital fifteen days after you started your journey from the witches’ forest. You hope that those three witches were the last of the coven that killed Lord Vladimir and his men, but you are also prepared to deal with any survivors.

“Should we make haste to the palace, Tsarevich?” Pyotr asks in a respectful voice, the one-eyed guardsman has followed you from the beginning of your adventures, “Or would you prefer to rest at an inn first? The commoners should feel honored to welcome their prince to the capital.”

>We will rest at an inn, perhaps send word to the palace and rest for a day before we go there

“We will visit the church first,” You reply after some thought, remembering the kind smile of the old priest who always offered you his wise counsel whenever you went to visit him in the church, “The archbishop is someone we can trust unconditionally.”

”The Tsarevich has returned! Long live Prince Ivan!” The commoners shout in jubilant voices as you and your guards ride through the streets of the capital. Young girls blush when they see you, children gawk at you like you are a hero of legends.

You know that your father’s subjects both love and respect you. They know you as the hero who saves orphaned children from evil witches, the hero who ended the treacherous reign of Koschei the Lich, and the hero who will one day rule as the Tsar of this land.

But the commoners do not how many times you nearly died in your adventures, the bards and singers always leave those parts out. They do not know how many wounds you have taken fighting witches and their demonic familiars, how good men died defending you, and how uneasy you felt while riding through the streets of the capital.

“I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Tsarevich,” A young nun named Anya tells you when you finally reach the church, “But Archbishop Yury passed away three nights ago.”

“May he rest in peace,” You sigh sadly, the kindly old priest was always there for you when you needed him, “How did he die?”

“He fell down the stairs of the church,” Sister Anya replies in a calm voice, “An unfortunate accident, but it was the will of the lord.”

“Odd, Archbishop Yury was always careful when he walked down those steps,” You do not know what, but there is something decidedly wrong here, “And I remember him being in perfect health the last I saw him, seems a little unusual that he would meet his end like this.”

“Like I said, it was the will of the lord,” The beautiful young nun replies in a cool voice, “Is there any way I can help you, Prince Ivan? Until a suitable successor to Archbishop Yury is found, I will be happy to listen to your confessions and offer guidance on spiritual matters.”

>I do not recall seeing you here before, Sister Anya, where did you serve before coming to the capital?

“I do not recall seeing you here before, Sister Anya,” You feel your suspicion growing, “Where are the other priests and nuns of this church?”

“They were needed elsewhere, Tsarevich,” Sister Anya explains in a calm voice, “Father Yury had left orders for them before he expired, I made sure that his last words were properly conveyed to the remaining clergy of the church. But there is no need for alarm, Prince Ivan, I have enough acolytes in the church with me, all of them devoted to the great lord.”

“I mean no offence, Sister Anya, but it is strange that a nun would be put in charge of running the church.” You ask the beautiful young woman, “Where did you serve before coming to the capital?”

“I am only in charge until a suitable successor is found to the archbishop,” Sister Anya replies in a serene voice, “And I had served the lord in the village of Nav before coming to the capital. It was once a dismal place filled with pagan heretics. But with my guidance, they have since converted to the worship of the great lord. Do you have any other questions, Prince Ivan?”

Welcome home, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily greets you respectfully when you and your men reach the palace gates, “Tsar Aleksandr is waiting for you in the throne room.”

“Just a little tired, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily says in a formal voice, even though the dark spots around his eyes betray his lack of sleep, “There have been some disturbances in the capital lately, my men and I were out conducting our investigations all night.”

“My guards have heard rumors about children disappearing from their beds, grotesque abominations appearing at night, heretics engaging in pagan rituals in the capital,” You reply in a calm voice and do not elaborate on the more sinister rumors you had heard, “Are things truly as bad as the commoners claim?”

“I fear that things are worse,” Commander Vasily replies in a whisper, “A lot worse. We should talk about this later, Tsarevich, somewhere more private.”

“As you wish, commander,” You say in a grim voice, troubled by the fact that the commander of your father’s guards no longer considers the palace gates to be safe, “But first I should meet my father.”

-

You make your way to the throne room alone, while your guards dismount from their horses and retire to the military quarters.

“Does my own father distrust his one and only son so much? The sole heir to his throne and continuance of his bloodline?” You casually smile at the guards, who look a little ashamed, “I am sure that my father did not mean for you to stop me when he gave you that order.”

“It was not the Tsar who gave us the order to stop you, Prince Ivan,” One of the guards whispers in an uneasy voice, clearly not looking forward to risking the wrath of the crown prince, especially considering your fabled skills with the blade, “It was the Tsarina.”

“You may as well ask me to surrender my hand,” You reply in a cool voice, you do not threaten the guards, but they no longer try to stop you from entering the throne room, “Don't be a fool, you just called me prince, now step aside, I wish to speak with my father.”

“Welcome home, Ivan,” Your father looks a lot older than you remembered, “I am glad to see that you are in good health.”

“It feels good to be home, father,” You reply in a cool voice, “It seems a lot has changed in the capital while I was away.”

“I was worried about your safety when I heard rumors that you were captured by Koschei the Lich,” Your father does not seem eager to talk about his marriage or his new bride, perhaps he feels ashamed or even a little afraid of your wrath, “How did you defeat that monster?”

>I took his head off with my sword, no matter how powerful the witches and their servants may think they are, my blade will always find them

>I found the iron chest where Koschei hid his death, dug it out and broke the needle that was inside it, no matter how clever the witches may think they are, I will always hunt them down

“I managed to kill him through my faith in all that is good in this world and the next,” You look your father in the eyes to see if he feels any guilt, “The servants of hell can never corrupt a man who still has hope.”

“I had lost hope when I heard rumors of you being captured by Koschei,” Your father looks a little ashamed, “With your brothers dead, I was afraid that it was the end of our bloodline. I had fallen into despair, when Lady Katarina appeared in the palace. I felt hope for the first time in months, and gradually we fell in love with each other. She is a remarkable woman, Ivan, I hope that you will grow to love her as much as I do.”

Before you can reply, the doors of the throne room open again. A beautiful young woman enters the room this time. She looks to be around the same age as you, perhaps a little older. You grimace when you notice that she is wearing the crown of your dead mother. Her fur-trimmed dress was encrusted with expensive jewels and emphasized her ample bosoms.

“It feels delightful to finally meet you, Ivan,” Tsarina Katarina says with a seductive smile on her face, “I have heard so many great things about you. I would love to hear more about your adventures.”

>The pleasure is mine, Tsarina, but please be aware that the bards and singers tend to exaggerate my accomplishments

>I am glad to meet you too, Lady Katarina, I will be more than happy to tell you about how I hunted down witches that thought themselves too clever to be caught

>I will be happy to tell you about my adventures, mother, and you have my sincerest thanks for the happiness you brought to father

>Just because you married my father, it does not mean that you can take the place of my mother, I suggest that you order a new crown as soon as possible

“I am glad to meet you too, Lady Katarina,” You reply in a polite voice, but make a point not to refer to her as Tsarina, “I will be more than happy to tell you about how I hunted down witches who thought themselves too clever to be caught.”

“I am sure that those are wonderful tales, Prince Ivan,” Lady Katarina smiles at you warmly, but there is a hint of mischief in her sapphire eyes, “But please be careful, it may not always be wise to tempt the wrath of witches.”

“I will be sure to stay on my guard, Lady Katarina,” You give her a slight bow, something worthy of a minor noblewoman, but not the Tsarina of the land, “I will take my leave now, father, there is much work that needs to be done.”

After leaving the throne room, you wonder where you should go next. Commander Vasily had wanted to talk to you in private, maybe he knows something about the witches hiding in the capital. You know him to be a good man, though a little stubborn once in a while.

Or maybe you should revisit the church, there was something decidedly odd about the young woman known as Sister Anya. Or maybe you should wander around the capital, talk to the commoners and conduct investigations on your own.

You decide to talk to Commander Vasily in private. If the man is truly hunting heretics, he may soon be murdered by them and you will not have another chance to find out what he knows.

“You returned exactly when the capital needed you the most, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily says when you meet him in one of the unoccupied rooms of the palace, "I suspect something truly horrific is set to take place tonight.”

“Tell me what you have learnt, Commander,” You ask the captain of your father’s guards, “I will help you stop the ritual no matter where it is set to take place.”

“I am sure that you are aware of the disappearances of Lord Vladimir and his men,” Commander Vasily replies, “I have reason to believe that they were murdered by a coven of witches who worship the pagan demon known as the Black Goat.”

“I have hunted down over a dozen witches who belonged to that coven,” You say in a tired voice, “I have also killed their demonic familiars and the half-human monstrosities they had birthed. I was hoping that the three witches I had killed two weeks ago were the last of that accursed coven.”

“Their numbers in the countryside seem to have dwindled since you began your hunt,” Commander Vasily nods, “I also have reason to believe that they had suffered a great defeat in the hands of Lord Vladimir and his men. But I fear that they are still active in the capital.”

“What have you found, Commander Vasily?” You ask in an uneasy voice, knowing full well about the terrible atrocities that coven is capable of, “You had told me that the truth is far worse than what the commoners know.”

“The witches have been sacrificing children,” Commander Vasily grimaces, “At first it was just orphans and street urchins – destitute children whom no one cared to miss. I had found small corpses, tortured and mutilated. Their hearts ripped out and possibly eaten. The Tsar decided to keep things secret so as not to make the commoners panic, a wise choice at the time considering what happens to cities driven mad by fear and paranoia. But the witches have grown bolder since then, they have even kidnapped children from their beds and left their mutilated corpses out in the open.”

“Perhaps the coven is preparing for a greater ritual and the witches need as many sacrifices as they can get,” You say through gritted teeth, “Or maybe they have grown so confident of their victory that they no longer feels it necessary to hide their crimes.”

“I am not surprised that they have grown so bold,” Commander Vasily says in an exhausted voice, “The servants of the Black Goat have managed to infiltrate every part of the capital. Otherwise they would not have been able to elude us for so long. At this point, I cannot even trust my own men.”

“You can trust the guards who returned to the capital with me,” You assure Commander Vasily, “They have proven their loyalty time and time again. Though I wish Archbishop Yury was still here, he could have played an important role in the hunting party. Sister Anya, the young woman from the village of Nav, seems nowhere near as trustworthy as he was.”

“Did you say that she is from Nav?” Commander Vasily raises an eyebrow, “Father Matthew and his acolytes had disappeared near that village. Though the villagers claim to have never seen the priest or his men.”

“I have heard of Father Matthew,” You nod, “But never had the chance to meet him in person. What sort of man was he?”

“A vile creature that merely pretended to be a man of god,” Commander Vasily does not mince words, “I would have him hanged if I had the power to do so, but he managed to convince Tsar Aleksandr with his lies and was hired to hunt down the witches and heretics hiding in this land. From what I have learnt so far, he and his acolytes went around the countryside torturing innocent women and children who had nothing to do with witches or heretics.”

“If he ever came across me in my travels, I would have him beheaded for his sins,” You feel disgusted when you learn the atrocities of the false priest, “But this only increases my suspicions towards Sister Anya. Perhaps we should search the church thoroughly, I have a feeling that we will uncover what truly happened to the clergy if we do so.”

“There is another thing you should know, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily looks at you with his green eyes, “I conducted some investigations on Lady Katarina. She claims to be the daughter of a noble house from the north, but I have since learnt that the house went extinct over two hundred years ago.”

“It is possible that that she is an impostor pretending to be a part of nobility,” You feel a sudden chill when you remember the legends you had heard about powerful witches consuming the hearts of young children to retain their youth, “Or there might be something truly disturbing happening here.”

“There are few men we can trust, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily still sounds tired, but he now has a look of determination on his face, “But we must stop the ritual that is set to take place tonight. Where do you think we should start, Tsarevich?”

>We will investigate the disappearances of young children tonight, hunt down the survivors of the coven that had killed Lord Vladimir and his men, and put an end to the foul rituals

>We will search the church tonight, I have a feeling that Sister Anya was lying about what happened to the clergy, perhaps we will also find out what happened to Father Matthew and his Acolytes

“We will search the church tonight,” You reply after some thought, “I have a feeling that Sister Anya was lying about what happened to Archbishop Yury and the rest of the clergy. Perhaps we will find out what happened to Father Matthew and his Acolytes as well.”

“As you wish, Prince Ivan,” Commander Vasily nods in agreement, “I have to say that I feel a lot more confident with you in the capital. Things might have never gotten this bad if you stayed here, but I understand that you needed to perform your duties elsewhere.”

“My father has failed to do his duties as the Tsar of this land,” You sigh in disappointment, “I was never close to my older brothers, but I wish that they were still alive, they could have fought alongside us tonight. So how many men do we have whose loyalties are absolutely certain?”

“Even counting your guards, we have fewer than twenty men that we can depend on,” Commander Vasily says in a grim voice, “But I can assure you that the men I select will never betray you, nor will they fall prey to the temptations of witchcraft.”

“I would rather have twenty loyal soldiers following me than a hundred cowards,” You assure the commander, “Sister Anya had told me that her acolytes are devoted to the great lord – a title very similar to what the witches call the Black Goat. We may face not only heretics but also demons in that church.”

“It is possible that some villagers from Nav were corrupted by demonic powers,” Commander Vasily sounds thoughtful, “I wonder if Father Matthew and his men had something with to do with this. If the church is truly occupied by heretics from that village, what should we do to bring them to justice?”

“We will sneak inside the church with a few loyal men and try to find out what happened to the clergy,” You do not have the men to fight a coven directly, “But we will also muster every loyal man we can, and have them on standby outside the church gates.”

“A sound strategy, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily bows respectfully before he takes his leave, “I will gather the men whose loyalty is absolutely certain and meet you in the evening. Let us pray that luck is on our side and we will be able to bring the witches to justice.”

-

That evening, you and eighteen other men begin the journey towards the church. Commander Vasily looks determined, you know him to be a great swordsman, perhaps second only to you. And in spite of his rough exterior, he is actually a kind man who greatly cares about the orphaned children and street urchins, and he will risk his own life to protect them.

Pyotr follows you silently, the one-eyed soldier was the type of man who will follow you to hell and back and never mutter a single word of complaint. Oleg looks a little uneasy, but also determined to bring the heretics to justice. You feel lucky to have men as loyal as them following you inside the church and hope that it will be enough to stop the ritual.

The church had always felt welcoming when you were younger. Archbishop Yury was a kind man, who always took the time to answer any question you had as a child.

”Will I meet my mother again?” You had asked the father when you had met him for the first time, you were little older than eleven years old back then, while the father was in his early forties.

”I am sure that the Tsarina is waiting for you in the heavens, child, but you will need to lead a righteous life if you wish to meet her again,” Father Yury had replied with a sad smile on his face, I am sure that your mother is watching over you right now, you should strive to be the type of man she would be proud of.”

”I will, father, I will strive to be a great hero and protect the innocents!” The promise you made that day has shaped your entire life to this point, ”I will make sure that mother feels proud of me when I meet her again!”

-

You had a rough childhood. Your father was often aloof, still grieving the death of his beloved wife. Your elder brothers blamed you for her death and were often cruel to you. You had found comfort in the church back then, but tonight it feels like an ominous place of horrors.

Commander Vasily, Pyotr and Oleg follow you inside the church. It has been over a year since you last came to the capital, but you still remember the layout of the church pretty well. You try not to raise any alarm as you and your men sneak inside through an open window. Unfortunately you are spotted by a lone acolyte patrolling the church grounds.

“You should not be here,” The acolyte seems to be a young peasant, “The mistress has ordered that no outsider be present during the ritual, I must warn the others!”

Before the acolyte has the chance to raise any alarm, Pyotr rushes him and knocks him to the ground. The young acolyte lets out a muffled cry of fear as the one-eyed soldier holds a knife at his throat.

“No need to kill him just yet,” You order in a calm voice, “Tell us what you know about the ritual, boy, and we will not harm you. But if you shout for help or warn the others, Pyotr will slit your throat.”

“You are Ivan Tsarevich,” The young acolyte says in a voice filled with awe once he recognizes you, “Please do not kill me, I only did as the mistress asked! She has the great lord's powers, we dare not disobey her!”

“Tell me what truly happened to Archbishop Yury,” You say in a voice filled with cold rage, “And the rest of the clergy who served in this church.”

“The mistress summoned a demon and ordered it to snap the archbishop’s neck,” The acolyte gulps, “The other priests are in the basement, the mistress said that they will be sacrificed tonight.”

“So Archbishop Yury was murdered,” Commander Vasily says in a grim voice, “But it seems the rest of the clergy are still alive, we need to rescue them by tonight.”

“Oleg, I want you to return to the rest of the men and tell them to storm the church,” You order as Pyotr finishes tying up and gagging the young acolyte, “The three of us will sneak inside and rescue the clergy before the ritual starts.”

“Once our men storm the gate, most of the acolytes will be busy defending the church,” Commander Vasily grimaces, “But there will certainly be guards posted in front of the basements as well, they may rush the ritual once they realize the church is under attack.”

“We will rescue the clergy before that happens,” You reply in a determined voice, “Oleg, I am counting on you and the rest of the men to keep the acolytes busy. Most of them seem to be untrained peasants, but they outnumber us two to one. Be careful not to lose too many of our men.”

“We will not let you down, Tsarevich,” Oleg bows respectfully towards you, then he runs back towards the rest of men. You hope that the acolytes will prove to be as incompetent as you expect and will not trouble your soldiers too much.

-

You, Pyotr, and Commander Vasily sneak inside the church and move towards the basement. This level is usually reserved as the burial place of saints and the respected members of the clergy. You feel your anger grow when you realize that the heretics desecrated the holy grounds through their sins.

In front of the locked gate of the basement, you find six acolytes standing with swords in their hands. They look shocked when they realize the church is being stormed. You may be outnumbered, but your enemies are considerably less skilled than you and your men are.

“Put down your swords!” The leader of the heretics says in a gruff voice, “There are six of us, and only three of you!”

“You have no idea who you are facing, do you?” Pyotr says in a calm voice as you pull out your sword, “The man next to me is Ivan Tsarevich, the greatest swordsman of this land. You will need to be incredibly lucky to even touch him with your blades!”

Crimson blood drips from your blade as you cut down the heretics one by one. You do not let anger cloud your judgment, but instead wield it to punish the servants of evil.

The heretics try to swarm you with all their might, but they lack skill compared to the enemies you usually face. It is only a matter of moments before six corpses lay sprawled on the basement floors.

“You have gotten even better than you were a year ago, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily compliments your swordsmanship as he unlocks the gate, “I am starting to believe every story I ever heard about you.”

“What took you so long, Commander Vasily?” Father Konstantin is the first of the clergy to emerge from the basements, “And is that you, Tsarevich? Good to see you are back in the capital. You need to kill that witch before she desecrates the church any further!”

With Archbishop Yury dead, Father Konstantin should be the highest ranking priest in the church. The cynical priest is well known for his hatred towards witches, but he is still a fair man who worked hard to protect the innocents.

“Do you have any crucifix or religious artifacts with you?” You ask the gruff old priest, “We might be forced to fight demons or worse things summoned by her.”

“You don’t really need any of those things if your faith is strong enough,” Father Konstantin grumbles, “But I’ll give you what you whatever you want.”

“Can you also bless our swords, father?” You ask as Father Konstantin hands you a jewel-encrusted crucifix, “I have a feeling that killing Sister Anya will be quite difficult with regular swords.”

“I am a priest not a miracle worker!” Father Konstantin says in an irritated voice, “But yes, I can bless your swords just this once. You really need to kill that woman.”

After the priest is finished blessing your swords, you and your men leave the basement and begin searching for the witch known as Sister Anya.

“So we meet again, Tsarevich,” Sister Anya smiles when you find her, the young nun was completely nude other than her habit, though she now appears as a pale-skinned horror with hollow eyes, perhaps this has been her true form ever since she sold her soul to the Black Goat, a hideous demon stood behind her and caressed her possessively, “Let me introduce you to Little Matthew.”

“What is that thing!?” Commander Vasily says in an unsteady voice when he notices the grotesque abomination fondling the nun’s breasts. The red-skinned demon is at least eight feet tall, with a heavily muscled body that embodies great strength, glowing eyes, pointed horns and a leathery tail. It roars wordlessly, but does not attack without the nun’s orders.

“He is my son and my lover,” Sister Anya caresses the demon’s hand lovingly, “I named him after the priest who had violated me in a church. I had begged the light to save me then, but my prayers were not answered. But then I prayed to the darkness, and the Great Master answered my calls immediately. I had thought about killing the child before it was born, but the Great Master offered to bless my womb with his touch instead. I gave birth only a week after I was impregnated by that man and my son has been growing ever since. And guess what, Little Matthew already has a much bigger cock than his father ever did!”

>So the false priest known as Father Matthew is responsible for this horror. Where is that man now?

>What happened to Archbishop Yury? Was it your ‘son’ that snapped his neck?

>Has everyone in that village sold their soul to the Black Goat?

>There might still be hope for you to find redemption, Anya, if you choose to repent your sins.

“So the false priest known as Father Matthew is responsible for this horror,” You say through gritted teeth, “Where is that man now?”

“He is in a hell of his own making,” Sister Anya smiles, “Suffering endlessly for his countless sins. The Great Master once allowed me to visit that man. The false priest pitifully begged me to save him or at least let his soul perish, I merely laughed and left him to his pain.”

“What happened to Archbishop Yury?” You ask in a stern voice, determined to avenge the death of the kindly old priest, “Was it your son that snapped his neck?”

“I offered the old man a chance to sign his name in the Black Book,” Sister Anya moans as her ‘son’ fondles her privates, “I even promised to spread my legs for him, but he refused my kind invitation. He told me that I could still find redemption, if I only repented my sins. I told my son to snap that old man’s neck and made it look like he fell down the stairs. A shame that he never learnt how much more fun it is to indulge in your base desires. The Great Master has liberated my soul with his touch and I will continue to serve him until I die!”

“I judge you and your son guilty of the murder of Archbishop Yury and sentence you both to death.” You are not killing this woman or the demon out of vengeance, but as justice for the kindly old priest who deserved a much more peaceful death.

You charge towards the pale-skinned witch, determined to avenge the death of Archbishop Yury and bring justice to his murderer. As Sister Anya is the one giving orders, fighting the demon should be a lot easier once she is dead.

Sister Anya does not even try to dodge as your blade pierces her black heart, perhaps she expected that her master’s dark magic would protect her from blades of steel. But your sword glows in light as it penetrates her heart, forcing her to scream in pain.

“Your sword was blessed with divine magic,” Sister Anya coughs dark corrupted blood as she realizes what just happened to her, “Even if I die here, know that your efforts were in vain! Tonight the coven planned to perform a three part ritual, sacrificing the peasantry, the nobility, and the clergy at the same time. By killing me, you only stop one of the three rituals. Even two-third of the Great Master's strength is more than enough to consume this land!”

“Tsarevich! Look out!” Commander Vasily shouts as the red-skinned demon tries to crush you and avenge its mother.

You try to dodge the blow but the demon is unnaturally fast for its size. You struggle to catch your breath, as you are thrown several feet back from the impact. Nursing your wound, you are forced to step back and let the others handle it for now.

“It was an honor serving under you, Tsarevich,” Pyotr coughs blood as he desperately defends you with all his might, sacrificing his own life to give you the chance to retreat, “I am just a simple soldier, but you are the one hope to bring peace to this land, please save yourself!”

The one-eyed soldier had followed you loyally since your first adventure, and you feel a great sorrow and emptiness when he finally collapses under the crushing blows of the grotesque demon. Commander Vasily is also incapacitated, but you expect that he may still survive.

You make one last desperate charge to kill the demon, hoping to drive your sword through its eyes. This demon has just killed the most loyal of your guards, you will not allow it to take another life!

The demon lunges at you with eyes full of hatred, perhaps it seeks to kill you and avenge its mother. But you are more successful in blocking its blows this time, as you have already seen it fight against your companions.

The demon screams in pain as your sword is driven through its right eye and pierces its brain. The sword glows in light again, cleansing the demon’s essence from this realm. You collapse in exhaustion, right next to the unconscious body of Commander Vasily.

-

It was already morning when your men secured the church. The worst of the heretics have been killed, while the rest have surrendered to your men. But there have been casualties on your side as well. Several men are dead and almost everyone is injured to some extent.

“How are you doing, Commander?” You ask Commander Vasily when you notice him limping around the church. He had lost consciousness after being thrown back by the demon, but he seems to have recovered for the most part.

“I will live,” Commander Vasily replies in a tired voice, “What about you, Tsarevich?”

“Utterly exhausted and in great pain,” You smile ruefully, “But at least we managed to save the clergy and end the corruption in the church. Now we just to find the Pale Queen and the survivors of the coven that had murdered Lord Vladimir and his men.”

-

“Prince Ivan!” A newly arrived soldier shouts when he finds you in the church, he seems to have ridden hard from the palace, “I have grave news – your father has passed away in his sleep last night. You are the new ruler of this kingdom, Tsar Ivan!”

>I will return to the palace at once and pay my respects to father.

Ok, one of the preps is as follows

We visit our commoner girlfriend to make sure she is ok, we declare to her and say that we will probably die tonight and that our status won't matter, we marry in a private cerimony in secret and make love for the first time. We ask for a loyal follower to look out and provide for her should we perish tonight.

This way we secure our bloodline and have something to fight for, our father loved our mother greatly and that made us believe in the folly of love, we wanted the same thing, and soo, it won't matter since we believe this to be the end

I shall pray for my father's soul right here in this church, until the time is proper for me to return to the palace.”

“A wise choice, Tsarevich,” Commander Vasily whispers when you are alone, “The witches and their minions have clearly infiltrated the palace. If you rush to the castle unprotected, they may murder you and end your bloodline.”

“Or they may try to frame me for the death of my father,” You silently utter a short prayer for the soul of your father, hoping that he will find peace in the next world, “The woman calling herself Lady Katarina has been quite effective at manipulating the men of the palace. We both know that she is lying about her ancestry, it is possible that she serves some dark power as well.”

“We should ask the clergy for their assistance,” Commander Vasily suggests after some thought, “They can vouch for your innocence in any wrongdoing and their blessings can help us defeat the servants of evil. We should consult with Father Konstantin and ask for his advice on the matter.”

“The church offers its condolences for your loss, Tsar Ivan,” Father Konstantin says when you and Commander Vasily approach him, “And our gratitude for what you and your men did last night. Five of your guards died fighting the heretics, I pray that their souls find peace.”

“What happened to the heretics?” You ask Father Konstantin, wondering if he will now take the place of Archbishop Yury at the church, “I believe that these men are actually common peasants from the village of Nav, who had chosen to follow Sister Anya as her acolytes.”

“The more zealous of them died fighting you and your men,” Father Konstantin replies, “The rest surrendered and are kept prisoner in the basements. As the Tsar of this land, it is up to you to judge their sins and punish them if you find them guilty. Perhaps you should talk to them before making your decision.”

-

“The false priest sent by Tsar Aleksandr murdered our village elder,” One of the peasants spits on the ground when he sees you, “He and his men violated women and children, and then burned them at the stake in the name of the Tsar!”

“That does not excuse your part in the heretical ritual that was set to take place last night,” You reply in a stern voice, “Father Matthew did deserve to die for his sins, but you have no right to take your vengeance on the other clergy of this church.”

“You still think you are the hero of this story, Ivan Tsarevich?” One of the older peasants shouts at you, “Where were you when our village was being terrorized? The nun had offered us protection from your lot and we did what she asked to save our children.”

>You rebelled against the crown and assisted demon worshipers, you will all hang for your crimes

“It was unfortunate what Father Matthew and his men did to your village, but your crimes are still unforgivable,” You say in a stern voice, “You rebelled against the crown and assisted demon worshipers, knowing full well that they planned to sacrifice innocents in their dark rituals. You took part in the murder of Archbishop Yury, allowed witches to torture and mutilate orphaned children, and sold your souls to perverse demons. For these crimes, I sentence each of you to death!”

“You made the correct judgment, Tsar Ivan,” Father Konstantin says as you walk out of the basements, Archbishop Yury might have advocated forgiveness if he was still alive, but Father Konstantin is a harder man, “Every man is born with a choice, either to walk in the light or surrender to the darkness. Once a man has sold his soul, he can never find the light again. If you had forgiven these peasants, they would have stabbed you in the back the moment you turned around. They deserve to die for the atrocities they have committed in the capital and elsewhere.”

-

“We found the mutilated corpses of thirteen children,” Commander Vasily says in a voice filled with cold rage, “The witches tortured the children for their cursed rituals and then consumed their hearts. I have no doubt that this is the same coven I had been tracking.”

“If we had enough men, we could have stopped all three rituals last night,” You sigh regretfully, silently making a promise to bring justice to the coven of the black goat, “Father would still be alive and the commoners would still have their children. All we can do now is avenge their deaths. How are the preparations going, Commander Vasily?”

“The soldiers have rested and recovered their strength,” Commander Vasily replies, “The priests have also finished blessing the swords. Will this be enough or do you suggest further preparations?”

Let's prepare a few things:
The priests that we freed should preach and drum up support for us.
Vasily and our most trusted men should take the time to rest and heal.
Some citizens should be assigned to prepare a stake and pyre to burn Katarina.
Tell the city guards to seal all the gates into the city.

“We will raise a militia from the commoners,” You tell Commander Vasily, “Considering how the coven has been murdering their children, the men of the capital should be more than willing to help us hunt down the surviving witches.”

“The commoners look up to you as a great hero,” Commander Vasily nods in agreement, “But we will still need more support. We do not know how many witches and demons are in this city, some of the guards may also be compromised. We need to be careful about whom we trust.”

“We can trust the priests we freed last night to stand against the coven,” You reply after some thought, “Perhaps we can also ask them to preach and rally support for us, in case we need to confront the enemy directly. Also tell the city guards to seal all the gates into the city, we cannot allow them to escape.”

“As you wish, Tsar Ivan,” Commander Vasily bows respectfully, then asks in an uneasy voice, “Do you recall what I told you about Tsarina Katarina? She claims to be the daughter of a noble house that went extinct over two hundred years ago. Should we return to the palace and confront her with this knowledge?”

It's like you haven't read the other two threads. It's going to be the final fight because we're going to blunder right into losing our head.

>>

Why cant we do some rabble rousing? Spread rumors that the Tsar was murdered by the witches (easier because its true). Get a mob to march on the palace etc etc

yeah, it'll get innocents killed. But mobilising the population might win us this fight in the long run.

“Once you are formally crowned as the Tsar, you will have more authority to deal with the corruption that has been spreading through this land,” Commander Vasily agrees, “Though I must advice you to be careful. You are the last of your bloodline. If you are murdered, there will be no one left to confront the servants of evil. And if they cannot murder you, they may try to beguile you using witchcraft.”

“This is a risk I must take, Commander Vasily,” You say in a grim voice, “Gather the men loyal to me, we are returning to the palace right now. Father Konstantin and the rest of the clergy should continue preaching against the witches and rallying support, while we secure the palace.”

Night falls by the time you and your men ride back to the palace and dismount at the gates. The palace feels gloomier than ever, like darkness itself has taken hold here. The palace guards all look troubled, some even look afraid.

“I was worried that something awful happened to you, Ivan,” Tsarina Katarina says in an affectionate voice when you find her in the throne room, “The palace feels terribly lonely without Tsar Aleksandr seating on his throne. I would feel better if you had returned earlier.”

“I had duties elsewhere, Lady Katarina” You reply in a calm voice, “Please tell me how my father died.”

“He died from old age,” Tsarina Katarina looks at you with her sapphire eyes, “It is always tragic when a great man becomes crippled with age and dies an unremarkable death. But what about you, Ivan? Do you not wish you could live forever? With your father gone, you are the Tsar of this land. You are a handsome young man. Would it not be wonderful to remain young forever and rule this land?”

“All men are destined to die, Lady Katarina,” You remember your fight against Koschei the Lich, that evil warlock had sealed away his death and turned into a grotesque monster for the sake of immortality, you wanted no part of that, “I have no desire to live forever.”

“Then perhaps you wish for your children to continue your bloodline,” Tsarina Katarina says with a mischievous smile on her face, “Do you have a girl you love, Ivan? Surely a handsome young hero like you would have a fair number of admirers?”

>I was given the task of hunting down witches and heretics, I did not have the time or luxury to engage in romance.

“I am flattered that you think of me like that, Lady Katarina,” You say in a composed voice, even though you are sure that you were nearly beguiled by her witchcraft, “But I must decline.”

“A pity,” Katarina lets out a disappointed sigh, “You know, I am rather impressed with you, Ivan. We could have made great allies against our mutual enemies. There are those who are content being servants and bootlickers, but I always wanted to be greater. After all, why should a queen call another her master?”

“I am glad to hear that you think so highly of me, Lady Katarina,” You reply in a cool voice, you are now certain that your suspicions about her were accurate, “But I have no desire to ally with someone I hold responsible for my father’s death.”

“Tsar Aleksandr died of old age,” Katarina smiles mischievously, she knows that you are aware of her true identity, but still speaks only in hints, “Though you should perhaps be grateful to old age. After all, some would say that you are the one who benefited the most from Tsar Aleksandr’s death.”

“What do you mean?” You are careful to maintain your composure, you cannot allow this woman to manipulate you.

“Were you not angry about how he disgraced your lady mother’s memory?” Katarina looks at you with her sapphire eyes, “How he slept with a woman as young as his son? How he failed his duties as Tsar and let witches poison his kingdom from within? Come to think of it, it does seem a little odd that your father died the exact same day you returned to the capital.”

That same night, you are formally crowned as the Tsar of the land. There is little celebration, fear and unease has their grips firmly placed on the capital.

“I have found out where the coven is hiding,” Commander Vasily whispers, he has mostly recovered from his injury, but still limps a little, “Should I gather the men and ambush the witches?”

“Bring only those who are certain to be loyal to us,” You are not going to risk bringing an unruly mob into this, “Also send word to Father Konstantin and the clergy, we may need them tonight.”

“As you wish, Tsar Ivan,” Commander Vasily bows respectfully, the green-eyed man has not left your side since you were formally crowned as the Tsar. He had been the captain of your father’s guards, but was not there to protect him last night. Perhaps he seeks to atone for this failure by protecting you more diligently.

-

“You have fifteen men armed with swords,” Father Konstantin says in a grim voice as you and your men ride to the misty forest just outside of the gates of the capital, “And five priests armed with faith. This time we should outnumber the enemy, but mark my words, there will be worse things than witches in that forest.”

“The Tsar has killed demons before,” Oleg says in a confident voice, the young soldier has placed his full faith on you, though he does not know of the uneasiness you feel, “No matter what horror awaits us in that forest, Tsar Ivan will bring them to justice!”

“It is good that you have faith, Oleg,” Father Konstantin grimaces, not sharing the younger man’s enthusiasm, “But don’t overdo it.”

“The coven should be close,” Commander Vasily interrupts in a grim voice, “Be on your guard.”

“The great master told us that you would be coming, Tsar Ivan,” The scantily-clad coven leader licks her lips when you and your men find her, “I wonder how the heart of a great hero will taste like.”

“Stay on your guard, mistress,” The pale haired acolyte says in a more alert voice, “They have also brought priests with them.”

“Priests taste terrible,” The silver haired witch says in a disgusted voice, “Most of them are old wrinkly men. I wish we could hunt children instead, their flesh always tastes better.”

You remember that thirteen children were found murdered last night. So there has to be more witches hiding in the deeper parts of the misty forest.

You charge towards the coven leader before she has the chance to use her witchcraft. The witch looks startled, she clearly had not expected that you would be the one to lead the charge. She lifts her staff to block your sword, but you are much faster than her.

You remember what Commander Vasily had said – mutilated corpses of children with their hearts ripped out. The coven had targeted orphans and street urchins – helpless children who had no one to protect them.

These witches and warlocks may still look like humans, but they are worse than the lowest of beasts. You do not think twice before driving your sword through their hearts.

The coven leader screams in fear and pain as your sword glows with the purest light. Father Konstantin and the other priests shout holy prayers, as more and more witches and warlocks are burned by the blessed swords of your men.

“Save us, great master!” The coven leader tries to crawl away, her black heart has already been burned by your sword, the same dark viscous blood flowing out of her wound.

“Please, I will do anything!” The witch begs like the wretched creature she is, “I will serve as your pleasure slave, Tsar Ivan, you can ravage my body in any way you want! Just…let me live!”

The witch tries to kiss your feet. You might have had felt pity for the vile woman, if you had not known the extent of her crimes.

As the leader of the coven, she has tortured and murdered countless children, and then consumed their hearts as part of obscene rituals. Someone like her can never be trusted.

You wordlessly take her head off with one swing. A lesser man might have seen fit to torture her before killing her, but you know that filth like her is not worth that effort.

“How utterly useless,” An inhuman voice fills the misty forest as the remaining witches and warlocks are hunted down by your men, “Humans never cease to disappoint me.”

You turn towards the source of the voice and see a sinister goat-like demon sitting cross-legged. You shudder when you realize that this creature the physical manifestation of the Black Goat.

>You will pay for the corruption you spread in these lands, demon!

“You say that, yet you never seem to stop trying to entice them to do your work. It seems... counterproductive.” You say in a calm voice, refusing to be afraid of the ancient demon.

“I work with what I have,” The Black Goat replies in an irritated voice, “It is not my fault that only wretched cowards and incompetent fools seem to sign their names in my book! Anya had proved herself more competent than the rest, but it seems you have killed her as well. I guess I have no choice but to kill you myself.”

“Are you the one who murdered Lord Vladimir and his men?” You ask in a casual voice, desperately looking for a way to kill the demon for good.

“Killing the nobleman was easy,” The Black Goat admits, “But there was this guardsman called Mikhail. Just a common soldier, not some great hero. If he had agreed to sign his name in my book, I would have made him immortal. But instead he chose to set himself on fire, just so he could destroy my mortal avatar. Never have I hated a man more than I hated him then!”

“Mikhail sounds like a man I would love to meet,” You signal your men to surround the foul creature and prepare to charge, “And you are wrong, demon, there is no greater hero than a man sacrificing his own life so that others may live!”

“You will have your chance to sacrifice your life too, Tsar Ivan,” The Black Goat laughs as it stands, “But it will prove just as useless as the sacrifice Mikhail had made. Also I am considerably more powerful than I was back then, you have no hope of leaving this forest alive.”

Are you sure you need to be here, now? Perhaps you would be better served talking to the Pale Queen about the terms of her contract. From what I heard from her, she sounds like she'd like to get rid of her yoke and rule by her own power rather then under you.

“Are you sure you need to be here, now?” You try to distract the demon while your men get in position, “Perhaps you would be better served talking to the Pale Queen about the terms of her contract. From what I heard from her, she sounds like she'd like to get rid of her yoke and rule by her own power rather than under you.”

“That woman is too ambitious for her own good,” The Black Goat looks at you with its hollow eyes, “She was once the daughter of a prosperous noble house from the north. Beautiful and clever. All young men in the land loved her and wanted her hand for marriage. She had everything the world had to offer – wealth, beauty, and love. Yet she wanted more, she wanted to be greater. So she used witchcraft and sacrificed her parents, her siblings, and her lovers – all for the sake of being a queen who reigned forever. She has lived over two hundred years and has not aged a single day. She has grown quite powerful since her awakening, but my power is still absolute.”

"You place too much faith in your power, vile beast,” You say in a defiant voice as you and your men prepare to charge, “My faith in good and righteous men is greater, and they have never failed me. Many of them stand before you now, and we shall end your wretched existence tonight. S nami Bog!"

Father Konstantin and the other priests chant holy prayers as you and your men engage the foul demon. The Black Goat moves with unnatural speed and rips one of your soldiers in half without any effort. But you do not let it intimidate you and press forward with swords in hand.

Your sword glows in light every time it slashes the ancient demon. The Black Goat curses at you in frustration, desperate to rip out your heart, but you move faster than you have moved in your life. You feel like every limb in your body is guided by the light itself.

“You are just vermin!” The Black Goat shouts in its inhuman voice as it rips out the heart of another of your men, “This land belongs to me, this world belongs to me, and you all belong to me! You will learn to worship me as your master, Tsar Ivan, or you will perish like all who have defied me over the centuries!”

The prayers of Father Konstantin and the other priests grow louder and the demon begins to noticeably slow down. You severe its skeletal arm with the swing of your glowing sword, but the limb begins to regenerate almost immediately. You realize that this is merely the avatar of the Black Goat and it may regenerate even if you remove its horned head from the body.

“Father Konstantin, we need to banish this demon back to the darkness it was born in!” You shout as the Black Goat regenerates its severed limbs and rips out the throat of another one of your guards, “It may be the only way to cleanse this land from the demonic corruption!”

“We need more time!” Father Konstantin says in an agitated voice, sweat forming on his forehead from the effort, the other priests look just as tired as he did, but they all continued the holy chant ardently, “You must hold it off for a little longer, Tsar Ivan!”

“You heard what the father said!” You shout at your men, noticing that the ancient demon is moving considerably slower than before, perhaps constrained by the holy prayers, “This is the only way we can protect this land and those we love!”

“You are just mere mortals!” The Black Goat shouts in its inhuman voice as you and your men drive it back with your glowing swords, “I have lived for a thousand years and more! What gives you the strength to defy me? Why do you struggle knowing that you will all perish in the end?”

“You will never understand, demon,” You say in a defiant voice as the priests reach the end of the holy prayer, “You are a cursed being born from the primal darkness. You only exist to corrupt others with your influence. You have never experienced love nor have you experienced hope. All men are destined to die, demon, but that does not that we have to abandon our hope for a better world! When we die, we leave behind our children to continue our bloodline, and we will continue to struggle to leave a better world for them. Return to the darkness you were born in, demon, and never return to this world ever again!”

The Black Goat shouts wordlessly in its inhuman voice, even as it is banished back to the primal darkness. For a thousand years and more, the Black Goat has served as the benefactor of all the witches and warlocks of this land. It has granted them the power to commit horrific atrocities. But now it will never touch this world ever again, and the rituals of witchcraft will be useless in its absence.

You pray that no more innocents will be sacrificed in the name of the Black Goat and that this world will be a happier place.

“Good work, Ivan,” Lady Katarina appears in the misty forest the exact moment when the Black Goat disappears from the world, “I have been planning to put the goat out of its misery for two hundred years now, and you finally get the job done for me. You truly are the best son a mother can hope for! I might have rewarded you by letting you sleep in my bed tonight, but I doubt that you are into that.”

“So you finally reveal yourself,” You feel tired, but stand defiant against the most powerful witch in the land, “You are the one whom the witches and warlocks worship as the Pale Queen. Over two hundred years ago, you were born as a noblewoman in the north. But you sacrificed your humanity and everyone who loved you to be reawakened as demonic queen. Am I wrong, Lady Katarina?”

“No, I cannot claim that you are wrong,” The Pale Queen smiles, there is no hint of fear on her pretty face, “So what are you going to do now, Tsar Ivan?”

“Arrest her and bring her back to the palace to face justice,” You order your men and turn to face the Pale Queen, “You have killed thousands of innocent men, women and children to be here, Lady Katarina, you will face justice and my judgment once we return to the castle.”

“Will I, Ivan?” Lady Katrina says with a mischievous grin on her face, like she is party to some secret you are not, “Do you not think that it is wrong for a son to judge his dear mother? You and I could have lived together as a loving family, but you chose to die as a righteous young hero instead.”

“Tsar Ivan, I cannot control my limbs,” Commander Vasily says through labored breath, “My head hurts, I hear voices coming from inside my head!”

“Tsar Ivan, please help us!” Oleg yells in a frightened voice, every one of your guards are either struggling to stand or are already on their knees.

“She is trying to beguile you with witchcraft!” Father Konstantin shouts to be heard, but even his voice is trembling, the other priests have already collapsed to the ground.

“Your faith in your men was misplaced, Tsar Ivan,” Lady Katarina says in a taunting voice, she has a witch’s wand in her left hand and a sinister blue light glows around it, “Just because you managed to overcome my enchantment, it does not mean that your men share your great mental fortitude.”

“Is this what you had done to father?” You feel helpless and alone for the first time since you were a child, “He would have stayed loyal to my mother’s memory, but you charmed him with witchcraft when he was at his lowest! This is how you placed yourself inside the palace, didn’t you?”

“You are an intelligent man, Ivan,” The Pale Queen has a mocking look in her eyes, “Surely you can understand the hopelessness of your situation? Even the men most loyal to you have turned their swords against you, and they will kill you if I just say the word. I will give you one last chance to accept me as your queen, Ivan, or I will sacrifice you alongside the priests as the final ritual for my ascension.”

>I will defy you till the end, witch! As long as life exists in my flesh, I will cut you and your servants down one by one!

“I will defy you till the end, witch!” You refuse to accept her as your queen, “As long as life exists in my flesh, I will cut you and your servants down one by one! Even if you kill me tonight, the commoners will know of your sin, and one of them will bring you to justice one day!”

“A pity,” Lady Katarina sounds disappointed as she orders your own guards to kill you, “Ruling this land would have been a lot easier with you by my side, Ivan. Our children could have continued your bloodline and secured my rule of this land. I think that bedding you would have been a lot more pleasurable than bedding your father had been. Rather unfortunate that you choose to die so young. Commander Vasily, I order you to bring me the Tsar’s head.”

“No,” Commander Vasily refuses to move his sword against you, blood flowing from his nose from the exertion of defying the enchantment. Even though he struggles to move his limbs, Commander Vasily forces himself to stab his sword in the ground, “Even if you break my mind, I refuse to serve a woman who had ordered the torture and mutilation of helpless children. I am sorry that I cannot help you any further, Tsar Ivan, it seems you will have to hunt this witch alone.”

“I am sorry, Tsar Ivan,” Oleg cries tears of blood, but his limbs move against his will, the young soldier seems to lack the mental fortitude of the guard commander, “I cannot control my arms or legs. Please forgive me!”

You are alone, fighting against ten men who had followed you on countless adventures. Good men who love and respect you. Blood comes out of their eyes and noses as they struggle to defy the witch’s will against all odds. But unfortunately, the witch’s magic is too powerful for them to overcome.

Katarina proves herself to be wiser than most witches as she watches from a safe distance, forcing you to face the men who had been the most loyal to you.

You hesitate even though you are outnumbered ten-to-one, desperately trying to incapacitate your soldiers instead of killing them. This witch wants to destroy who you are and turn you into something you are not, you will not allow her to manipulate you like this.

Your soldiers move like puppets on string. Weaker men would have stopped struggling and allow the witch’s magic to control them, but your men are far too loyal for that. Even as they bleed from their eyes, they fight against the enchantment in order to help you in any way they can, their movements slower due to the struggle.

“Just kill me, Tsar Ivan,” Oleg says in a weak voice, his strength fading as the witch increases the pressure, “I would rather die than to serve the shadow. Please tell my mother that I fought till the end, that I never let the witches corrupt me to their side.”

“No,” You use your remaining strength to knock the man out instead of killing him, taking wounds that you could have avoided if you fought to kill instead, “I will not kill men loyal to me! Keep fighting, men, demons like her can only corrupt those who have abandoned hope. You are all stronger than this, push her back!”

Several of the other guards follow the commander’s example and force themselves to bury their swords in the ground. But even then, they collapse to their knee, trembling from the agonizing pain and bleeding from their eyes. But not all have the mental strength to resist the enchantment, and they are forced to attack you under the witch’s orders.

You feel a sharp pain when a blade reaches you, severing parts of your left ear and mutilating your face forever. But you still refuse to kill the man and knock him out with your fist instead. You have taken wounds all over your body and may collapse from blood loss soon.

You desperately charge through your men, knocking down whoever gets in your way to the ground and rush straight towards the witch.

that extra week of travel actually fucked us very much I think, maybe we could have saved the priest father and the commoners if we had a week to investigate right?

on the other hand, if we had taken the 3 weeks option we would have arrived to a fucked up capital

One thing all witches share is their pride and arrogance. When they are assured of their victory, they stop being cautious and take unnecessary risks. Lady Katarina proves herself no exception, as she watches you struggle against the most loyal of your soldiers.

“Just give up, Ivan,” The Pale Queen laughs as you collapse from blood loss, too tired to close the distance between the two of you, “Even a great hero like you have their limits. It is a pity how you ruined that pretty face. Was the lives of some common guards truly worth it?”

“Yes, it was,” You say in a weak voice, as the witch looks confident of her victory. You are sure that she has not even used a tenth of her true powers yet. The witches who worshiped the Black Goat would have been powerless without their great master, but Katarina seems to possess her own dark magic.

If the Pale Queen completes the third part of the ritual and sacrifices the clergy, she may become truly unstoppable, perhaps even more powerful than the Black Goat ever was. You must kill her before that happens, even if means sacrificing your own life.

You hear Father Konstantin praying for a miracle. You remember the men who sacrificed their lives fighting the shadow over the years. The countless friends you had buried after your adventures. You remember the name of Mikhail, a common soldier who had sacrificed his own life to give the Black Goat its first defeat, a common soldier who had died as a great hero.

You remember Pyotr, the one-eyed soldier who had followed you from your first adventure, and died protecting you from a powerful demon. You remember your father, Archbishop Yury, and the countless others who have lost their lives at the hands of the witches. You remember your mother, who watches over you from the heavens, and whom you wanted to make proud.

With strength you did not know you had left, you force yourself to stand. Your sword suddenly glows in a light purer than any you had ever seen before. You rush towards the Pale Queen again, who looks at the light in disbelief.

“How did you…” Katarina tries to speak, but you feel as fast as the light itself. You swing your sword with the blessing of of all that is good in the world, empowered by the sacrifices of all who gave their lives fighting the darkness.

The Pale Queen’s head hits the ground, her beautiful face frozen in disbelief. No blood comes out of her wound, it seems she had stopped being human and turned into something else entirely. Her flesh turns to dust before your very eyes, scattering in the wind like the woman had never even existed.

Your vision fades as you collapse from exhaustion and blood loss. But you feel content, knowing that the last witch hunt was over.

Epilogue

Even though they had all taken great wounds that night, Tsar Ivan and his men eventually recovered from their injuries. The Tsar would carry the scars of the battle for the rest of his life, but he was still considered more handsome than any other man in the kingdom.

Tsar Ivan never regretted the scars he received from the last witch hunt, as the land was finally free from the darkness of witches and warlocks. A thousand songs and more were written about the heroic Tsar, who went on to have many more adventures.

The land grew peaceful and prosperous during the reign of Tsar Ivan, who became known for his wisdom and compassion throughout the neighboring lands. Commander Vasily and Guardsman Oleg served the Tsar loyally, and followed him on his journeys to distant lands.

Father Konstantin took over the role of Archbishop in the church of the capital. He was still as gruff and cynical as ever, but offered wise counsel whenever the Tsar consulted him. The village of Nav was rebuilt under his watch, this time free from the influence of heretics.

The Tsar also compensated the families of the soldiers who had died fighting witches and warlocks. The families of the guards of Lord Vladimir were also compensated under Tsar Ivan’s orders. It is said that the young daughter of a guardsman named Sasha grew to be a great adventurer years later.

Guardsman Mikhail left behind no immediate family, but he was revered by the commoners when tales of his great sacrifice finally spread through the land. Some even considered him a saint, watching over common men and protecting them from the darkness.

Tsarina Katarina was never seen again. There were always whispers that she was actually a witch who had beguiled Tsar Aleksandr through witchcraft, but most commoners instead assumed that she had returned to her home in the northern lands.

It is said that Tsar Ivan went back to visit the many remarkable friends he had made during his adventures – including Baba Yaga, Yelena the Beautiful, Vasilisa the Wise and Marya Morevna. He is also said to have befriended shapeshifting wolves, rescued sleeping princesses, and recovered hidden swords of magic. But those are stories for another time.

Thanks for running Jagged. Ivan's a great character. Just, devout but not afraid to do what's necessary. Definitely a better char than Darkwood
>>
>>2758956
The goodest of ends. Thanks for running QM, that was great. Glad everyone didn't die horribly for once.
>>

bravo qm, bravo

we pulled through in the end

nice seeing that Sasha's family is in good hands and that Mikail was finally heard.

thanks for running and if you wish to run something else I'll gladly play

Thanks for running man.

Can you tell us what some of the choices we didn't do would make happen?

The travel time and the last one for the pale queen(if we went for the heart) for exemple

Dark fantasy and slavic folklore. Very similar in tone to this one. But on a grander scale

QM such a great quest, You really made us think of our actions. I thought multiple times that we were going to die a horrible death. Hope you run more quest!
>>
Is the darkwood going to continue?
>>
>>2759485
I've been reading it but, it seems really... stiff? There's almost zero fluff or fleshing out of conversations in the posts. He just jumps from one question or action to the next. The dialogue feels wooden as well.

>>2761601
Jag's quests take some time to get going. I almost gave up on his gladiator quest after the first couple chapters, but it got really good around chapter 7 and had one of the most epic endings I've ever read in any quest. Darkwood has less action, but much better world building.
>>
>>2761673
Gladiator Quest was a masterpiece. IMO the weakest of his quests is Naval Explorers, but even that's better than 90% quests here or on Akun.
>>
>>2761700
A QM that runs multiple quests and actually gives them an end instead of flaking away?Preposterous!
>>
>>2761729
Jagged always finishes his quests, that's what makes him one of the best QMs around.
>>
>>2761700
I was browsing through Akun last night, it was almost all straight up fetish quests or garbage magical girl nonsense.

They even somehow managed to turn a damn Sins of a Solar Empire quest into a shipgirl Kantai quest for shit sakes.

>Can you tell us what some of the choices we didn't do would make happen? The travel time and the last one for the pale queen(if we went for the heart) for exemple

The travel time choice was mainly for character development – to establish whether Ivan Tsarevich is a pragmatist who drives horses to their deaths to save one week of travel time, or if he is an idealist who refuses to mistreat those loyal to him.

If we arrived earlier, we might have found Archbishop Yury still alive. He would have played a similar role to Father Konstantin, but would act more forgiving towards the prisoners. The dynamic between Ivan and the clergy would also be different in that case.

Going for the head vs going for the heart was mostly for narrative purpose at that point, the dice roll was the key there. However, I did briefly consider employing a classic folklore trope and imply that Lady Katarina does not have a heart.

If we had chosen to play as the 11-year old Ivan Tsarevich, he would have been more naïve and accepting of his stepmother. The story would have been somewhat similar to the folktales of evil stepmothers trying to eat the hearts of their stepchildren to remain young forever.

If we had chosen to play as the 15-year old or 19-year old Ivan Tsarevich, he would have been more likely to be seduced by Lady Katarina. His older brothers might have been alive if we followed those routes, however they would probably appear as secondary antagonists.

After Credits

My sincerest thanks to everyone who followed Witch Hunter Quest to the end. This was originally supposed to be just a one-shot, but ended up becoming a trilogy due to reader feedback. I might run something similar to this again sometime – possibly taking inspirations from other folklore.

>Is the darkwood going to continue?
I have plans to write a sequel or Book 2 – with the tentative subtitle “The Duke of Darkwood”. But writing that quest requires a lot of research and preparation on my part, so it will have to wait until I have more free time on my hands.

See you guys later, do let me know if you have any suggestions for any quest I might run here in the future.

Hope to see your here again jagged, I'll also read your stuff from anonkon. You seem to be really good at being a QM. You also research and build lore, which I love.
