"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon

Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’ Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine.

'Jack' Marcus Slain while retaking the North Tower, his sacrifice saved his squad and perhaps the Company.

Recap
It’s over. The Siege of Kresden is finally over. For five days you and the Black Company have held the line against the full might of the Free Alliance and bled them dry. No one would have thought that was possible, the Black Company will be remembered. It’s one of the shortest sieges you’ve seen in your career, but you feel the toll on your blackened soul more than even after the year-long debacle in Far Sut Rus.

The General and the Archmage are dead, murdered by a Free Alliance commander desperate enough to cut a deal with the Necromancer. Without the Archmage’s protection your Employer had little difficulty turning vast swathes of the Free Alliance encampment into yet more undead minions. His army of the dead numbers in the millions now.

The Necromancer has taken an interest in you, offering you a separate contract from the Black Company, in exchange for the life of a fallen comrade…

You stand there for some time, the room utterly still as you agonise over the Necromancer’s offer.

The Necromancer’s ethereal figure looms in closer, neck bending at an impossible angle. You wonder whether your Employer is intentionally unsettling or if he is so far removed from his humanity that he is simply unaware of how disconcerting his presence is.
”what iS YOUR answeR, PRINce of bLACK?” The abominable master of death chitters, their patience wearing thin.

1 year in service to this creature… the life of a fallen friend. You could bring back anyone… you could bring back Trooper ‘Kid’. To have them back, to see Saint happy again…

Maybe you once would have taken the Necromancer up on his offer. Before you spat in a Mad God’s eye and sold your soul for a dollar at a dime. When your blood ran hot and your heart wasn’t a shrivelled, hateful lump.
You would do it all again in a heartbeat, all the prices you paid for the Black Company. The Captain needs you, the Company needs you. You will not abandon them. Not now, not ever.

”The Captain will say no. No it is then.”

You wait for your Employer’s thunderous outrage at your refusal, for him to rear up and smite you down with his unholy power. You wait for the wave of displeasure to turn into anger. Your hand tight on Claíomh Na Sléibhte, ready to make your own futile defence.

The attack never comes. Instead the Necromancer shrugs, an eerily human gesture.

”a pitY, I WOUld have MADE FruitFUL USe of yoU.” The Necromancer flicks a bony hand aside dismissively as he loses interest, gesturing at your Highlander Blade. ”YOU And thaT BAUBle. comE, LET Us insPECT My new aRMY…”

The Necromancer pauses at the command tent’s opening, as if remembering something. With a glance at the crumpled form of Mask he sighs, expelling a wave of energy. The ancient undead warrior stirs, able to move again, and the shadows that had entangled Cairsun the Morning Light recede.

”IF YOU and yoUR COMpany WILL Not servE ME AFter thiS CONTract, aT LEASt do noT BE SO fooliSH AS To serVE THOse who WOULD oppoSE ME.” Though the threat is spoken casually, as a matter of fact, you do not doubt your Employer would carry it out. ”IF YOu comE INTO the serVICE of my eNEMIes, I wILL DEstroy YOU ALL, and buRN YOur prECIOUs annALS.”

>The Necromancer lets you go, and even reigns in his crazy sister.
It enrages you, for him to act like the Black Company can be crushed like an insect. You’re the below-blasted ones that got him this far! Your Employer needs to understand that this parting of ways is a mutually beneficial arrangement, not a mercy on his part. Besides, no one threatens the Black Company in your hearing. Not even him.

“Don’t underestimate us. If you come after us, let your sister mess with us, then the Black Company -will- ruin your day.”

Not that you have any idea how, of course. You only have half a name. You think that, in that very moment, the Necromancer is contemplating killing you then and there. And probably obliterating the Black Company too while they’re at it.

Your hand tightens on the hilt of your blade again. He’s tired. He must be, after turning most the Free Alliance army into walking corpses. Insanely powerful but not, you think, without limits. You don’t flinch in the slightest. But he promised sanctuary…

”it matTERS Not. your IMPUDence iS OFFENsive, but WE GaIN nothING by SEEking thE OTHers destrUCTION.” The Necromancer, you cannot tell but you would swear he was smiling, places a hand on your shoulder. ”I FIND your DEFiance refrESHINGLY ENTERtaining. NO HArm will coME TO you and YOurs BY MY hand.”

It is the coldest sensation you have ever felt, cold like the slice of a wet blade on your flesh. So freezing that it burns. You suspect, had you remained mortal and not become what you are now, you would have lost the use of that shoulder permanently.

”And your crazy-bitch sister.”

”…YES Yes, -and- MY CRAzy-bitCH SISter.”

”HMM, THis was ONE OF my earLIER works. IMPREssive, TO HAVe lastED THIs long ON AMAtueriSH BINdings.” The Necromancer changes the subject, remarking on the rigid Knight-of-the-Line Mask. Mask appears to be jerky in his movements, almost trembling in the Necromancer’s presence. Not with fear. Struggling to will his way past whatever safeguards are stopping him from trying to kill the one who destroyed his homeland, you suspect. ”YOU HAve fouND IT To your SATISfactiON?”

”Mask has served us well, I’m proud to call him brother.” You and your cohort of Cairsun, Mask and Lord Lorgia have automatically assumed an escort position, flanking your Employer as he emerges from the tent. You know that anything that could threaten him would have no trouble with you, but protocol is protocol.

”Him? Cute. I myself occasionally nickname my pets as well.” You’d recognise the mad giggle of Superior Syka anywhere, always with the most negative of connotations. ”Wow. How did pathetic little YOU get so strong?”

The Necromancer’s sister is sitting on a newly turned Neumunster Lieutenant that is on all fours as a makeshift undead chair. Syka eyes you up and down, her mad stare no longer causing you to break out into cold sweats as it once did. You think you are more than able to take her on now.

Not that you would do so right here in front of your Employer. That would just be unprofessional.

How did you get so strong? Sure, you’ll just share that bit about breaking a holy pact to the Dark Father with her. ”A well balanced breakfast. That’s how.”

You growl, not having the patience to pretend to be polite to her after the day you’ve had. Syka pouts, folding her arms and scowling at you.

”Fine. You could at -least- tell me who this Corporal Aeron is. Letting me squash just ONE of your precious brothers that has been chopping up my cultists and disrupting our sacred rituals isn’t too much to ask.”

Last you checked, public execution of old men and children was not a sacred ritual. Though you suppose ‘Corporal Aeron’ had reminded the cultists more forcefully than necessary of their duty to supply food provisions to the Black Company.

This vendetta Superior Syka has against the figment of your imagination called Corporal Aeron has plagued you long enough as it is.

” Corporal Aeron died in action during the siege.” You say slowly, already anticipating the next words out of her mouth. ”And no, you cannot have his remains.”

”But I -do- love the dead. Frequently.” Syka sticks her tongue out at you, crossing her legs. ”Oh well, at least the unbeliever was righteously punished in the end. My Divine Brother must have figured it all out somehow and arranged it.”

Sure… You think, but do not say. Not point actively antagonising her now that your contract is up.

”Besides…” She smiles sweetly at you, her teeth bared and vicious. ”I have plenty of playthings here and… well you’ve saved me a whole town of people to play with! Heeheehee! Or convert, that too. Though I guess I can play with those as well. Hmmm. ”

You ignore the crazy sorceress, trying not to dwell on the likely fate of the Kresden townspeople. From the sounds of it, all you’ve managed to achieve is that the town remains relatively intact before the cultists start culling the population.

You do find it difficult to see in the dark as you once did, your eyes can make out what at first looks like a rush of water flooding the countryside surrounding Kresden. You realise with awe that it is the dead.

Row upon row upon row of them. You have never seen this many people in once place, if you can call them people. It dwarfs the combined might of the Free Alliance that marched over these same hills 5 or 6 days ago. Humans and elves are not the only undead present. Rats, birds, horses and livestock. They’re everywhere, swarming the siege encampment. Standing vacantly, perched on the tents or scurrying between your feet. It is unnaturally quiet. This huge number of creatures should not be so deathly silent. The only you can hear is the ominous chanting of Syka’s columns of cultists. Though whether it is for an actual ritual or praise for their Divine Necromancer’s victory you have no idea.

You notice remarkably few Chevalisse Nobles or Heigelen Guard among the neatly formed rows of rotting and skeletal soldiers. Perhaps those with some form of holy or magical protection managed to avoid the fate of their fellow man, you can make out what appears to be a group of tattered survivors heading in the opposite direction of the host. Interestingly, no part of the vast undead horde moves to pursue them.

You suppose it really doesn't matter, they should spread the story. Nothing can stand up to this army... to the Necromancer.

[1/2]
>>
>>2764797
Looks like Kresden will be fertile recruiting grounds for the Company.
>>
>>2764775
Never, actually. I had the Necromancer's name good to go, but anons had never shown any interest in expanding the backstories of Prince or other squaddies before they joined the Company (aside from 'raised in an orphanage' childhood adding lols to our own poor record with orphans).

Which is exactly what I wanted as well, leaving your past life behind is central to joining the Black Company. Eventually you're not even referred to by anything other than your nickname and rank at some point.
>>

Kresden Town Manor, Midday

Your new unnatural form has little need of food, drink or sleep. Or at least you thought it did. Since arriving back in town from the raid you have been dealing with the aftermath of the destructive bender caused by your victorious, drunk and troublesome 7th Kriegstrom platoon. It has even you exhausted, mentally if not physically.

”Furlough with paid leave to the Seventh-fekking-Kriegstrom.” You roll your eyes at Saint’s report, noticing that she’s even annexed a list of damages and estimated compensation to it. Well, they are your Employees subjects now. The Company’s contract makes special distinction with how the two are to be reimbursed at the conclusion of hostilities.

You squint your eyes at her cursive handwriting, too neat by far compared to your scrawling. You try reading it aloud to make sense of it…

” ‘At this point the situation was mostly under control…’ yes, yes good… ’…until Trooper Nissar Belhamun’s spell went off, he claims by accident. Please see Report 1B for Damages Resulting from Unauthorised Use of Magik’… Below damn these fekking mortals.”

It is in fact almost a relief to you that this activity could instill in you this much hatred. And not the blind, dangerous hatred that takes you in waves occasionally where even you are afraid of who you might hurt if you don’t control it. No, this hate now is a spiteful hate, where you are so deeply mired in the toxic thoughts you are almost enjoying coming up with creative ways to make your displeasure known to your subordinates. It seems that the loathing of cumbersome bureaucracy and paperwork foisted on superiors for the idiotic actions of their underlings transcends the realms of mortals and Below. Besides it’s not that bad, you’re almost done…

You have just enough time to think Oh no, I’ve jinxed it before Saint slams another batch of paperwork down in front of you.

”…No. No no no.” You’re a virtually immortal killing machine, they can’t make you do this. ”This isn’t what we fought for. Death by papercut. No, I won’t do it.”

”Are you quite finished?” Your temple vein bulges at her apparent amusement at the most dangerous man in the Black Company’s little temper tantrum. At least you didn’t throw anything. Your moment of defiance is utterly deflated by the second pile of forms Saint pushes across the table at you. ”And that would be death by papercut... in triplicate.”

”…*sigh*…” At least you don’t have to wonder what eternal torment in Below may look like for you. You’re very certain that it will involve paperwork. And you don’t even have any orphans to foist it off to. ”If I could just… just get my hands paperwork’s -true- name it would… maybe the Isle of Mages Library… could that be the source of it’s power?”

”Um. Okay. Let’s move on from that to these new forms. Fresh meat for the grinder. What?” Saint says at your raised eyebrow, she is one of the few that doesn’t flinch at your hideous appearance. ”I’m just quoting you. Personally I think that’s an incredibly pessimistic take on our new recruits.”

”Oh great! First the Dragon, then the Grenn and now the Vampire.” You shake your head at the Platoon Application sheet for one of the Kreigstrom’s newest recruits. Lord Lorgia, foisted upon you at the Captain’s order. ”I thought diversity quotas weren’t a thing for us?”

Saint shrugs. ”Captain says it was your idea to let them join, so you’re stuck with them.”

You scowl, that was not an entirely accurate version of events. You just didn’t give them a flat ‘no’. You glance at your protégé, gesturing at the pile of paperwork ”Aren’t you going to help me with all this paperwork?”

”Can’t order me to pick up your slack anymore, Prince.” Lieutenant Saint chuckles, tapping her new golden officer pins. ”Besides, the 4th Infantry Platoon comes with plenty of its own paperwork.”

Fek, she’s right. You should never have recommended her for that promotion. That way you could continue to stick her with this monotonous task. You remain hopeful. ”Well… do you want him?”

Saint gives you a surprisingly undignified snort in response. ”I’d probably end up ordering him to work on his tan.”

You suppose that’s true, mind already wandering back to the task at hand. Lord Lorgia and the few Bloodknights that signed up with the Black Company are your problem now, though you notice that not -all- the Bloodknights specifically requested a Kreigstrom posting.

”Well, best to keep them all in one place. Lorgia has that typical vampiric arrogance, but the other bloodsuckers seem to listen to them. 7th Platoon will form a new Squad under his command.” Of course, that will mean getting approval from the Captain. And more paperwork.

In Saint’s defence, she does try to stifle her snigger at your reaction to her next words. ”With this many new recruits, and so many applying for the 7th, you might need to form more than just one new squad.”

You yourself snort at the next form crossing your table.

”The Captain offered Ludos-fekking-Clayton an Officer’s commission?” It takes some effort to keep the disbelief out of your voice, the Captain of the Yellow Dogs mercenary gang was always a difficult one to manage throughout the siege. And just an outright arsehole at every given opportunity. Typical Yellow Dog material.

”On this I agree with the Captain. This campaign has bled the Company Officer Corps dry, Prince.” Saint pauses, nodding at a Trooper passing by the tent entrance. She looks back to you. ”LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams is with whatever is left of the Rangers, you’re in charge of the Kreigstrom and the Captain isn’t even going to try and reform the Calvary Platoons with what little we have to work with. Even out of the Infantry Platoons I’m the only one with previous command experience.”

”What about the Ajiyimad Turncoat, Sabn-Ibn-Abad?”

”Wants nothing to do with us, or the Necromancer. He’s heading back to Ajiyimad to challenge his exile.” The likelihood of him actually making it there goes unsaid, you doubt the morally-principled exile prince managed to secure a guarantee of safe passage like you did for the Black Company. ”Ludos Clayton is difficult, but he has the experience. Black Company -needs- that experience, or we’re going to have one of those baby-faced Tassenland recruits running a squad. That said, Clayton’s preference is to turn down any Officer role for a position as a Sergeant in the 7th Kriegstrom.”

”That might have something to do with my 7th Kriegstrom being the best in the world.” You fail to suppress the smug tone, but they are yours after all. And they are the best.

”It might indeed.” Saint smiles, though it feels like something of a challenge. ”But give me some time with the 4th and I’m sure my men will be giving yours a run for their Gelt.”

You wave your hand dismissively, the 7th Kriegstrom is the best on the continent, maybe the world. The 4th Infantry is welcome for a shot at the title anytime.

It looks like Captain Kiranova was happy to let Ludos Clayton be either an Officer or a senior NCO, just so long as they got someone with his ‘qualifications’ in a Black Company looking increasingly green after the recruit applications started pouring in.

Yes but it wasn't up to you. We'll never know whether the Captain would have insisted on burying/burning their own dead since they are technically now the Necromancer's possessions.

You'll never know though, because after Saint's promotion she systemically ensured that each Black Company raised corpse was rendered dysfunctional enough to be discarded (and given a proper discrete cremation). Demagogue Jale helped.

There will be an service in their memory, but the fate of the actual bodies has been decided without you.

Anything else that is necessary for a good Black Company epilogue? I'll supported requests and write this up during the week.

--------------------------------------------

You decide to get back to Clayton later, happy to condemn his rank to bureaucratic-purgatory for a little way. The next form brings even less welcome news, someone transferring -out- from the 7th even as you deal with so many coming in.

”What is it?” Even through your gruesome visage, Saint can always tell when something is bothering you.

You hesitate telling her for a moment, but decide to anyway. Saint has earned your trust. ”It’s a Transfer Request from the 7th to the 4th. Lance-Corporal Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster.”

”Not my call, Prince.” Saint keeps her voice carefully neutral. ”But I would be happy to have her. She performed well in her first command as junior-NCO, and having a familiar face around would be well worth her whining.”

"But why…" You're not fooling yourself. You both know why. You’re a powerful juggernaut that has seen the 7th through to victory after victory, but more than a few of your brothers and sisters in black find you absolutely terrifying.

-----------------------------------

> Sign the transfer request. If LCPL ‘Joker’ Schuster wants out of the Kreigstrom, she’s out. She must have her reasons.

I did promise fanart, I am delivering. Somewhat.

Honestly surprised I got to care so much for some of the characters, even those that have relatively few appearances.

And even if I found myself hoping for the Company of Heroes ending, I can't be mad. It's just been too fun.
And emotionally draining. But fun.

There are many moments that steer from gut wrenching to fekking hylarious.
Or are both. Orphans, kek.
Especially those that were not planned. Looking at Vermillio, Kid and the two istances of Skaldening.
Fek, Kid life for 5DC? Come on.
Still hurts
And you know what? This drawing, I started it when I really felt Prince starting to slip hard.
Now he is Black Prince, and I can't really bring myself to finish it.
Because I tried to represent a question in this one. It got an answer while I was still working.
We had a chance to stay human. Tainted, but human.

Now we are not. And it hurts so good.

OK, this one? Top three best moments in the whole quest, imo.

I was planning to do one for Kiranova (Saint is for pure. And she lost waifu waifu-value with her fall, she became too much of a ward or disciple.
Not a bad thing at all);
But, wow, that part with her repulsion and the tears really hit. I don't think I could stay for the half an hour to an hour needed for a passable work of a tear stained Kira, as I enjoy get feelz-punched by others, doing it alone doesn't feel that nice.

And what a waste not accepting the deal. Obvious trap sure, but that sweet plot-hook...And it was only Prince!
Regrets, regrets.

Really looking foward to the next quest. Playing a good man (wholesome paladin or not, not going lawful stupid pls) will be refreshing.
...and I need a bit of healing after the binge rollercoaster.
Ah but I forget this is Forgotten, trauma is inevitable. Good. I wonder who will try and be the prince/corruptor to our (male? not useless? kek)saint

Anyway.
If you keep up this level of work, I'll surely get more fanart rolling in the future, for the new quest. Maybe completed.
If I am fast enough, maybe kiranofu, not so cold in the past, or alternate ending
MAYBE HAND-HOLDING (what a deviant)

Eagerly waiting the epilogue.

This is amazing. Words cannot express how happy I am to see one of BCQ's players so heavily invested in the quest.

You have captured both moments perfectly. That moment where Prince was standing at the crossroads, when the demands of the Officer rank and his pacts with the Dark Father were taking their toll but before he really sold his soul. It's beautiful. And the moment of peace before the risky raid mission; Prince's music acting as a salve for Mask's agonizing existence and Saint watching on silently. Bad Hand was passed out to the side, so he likely wouldn't have been in the frame from the POV you've used. Absolutely fine, you've done a bang up job.

Work will be hectic for new for the next couple of days, so we likely won't see updates until Wednesday/Thursday. But you have inspired me to shift some things aside and dedicate a proper day session come this weekend. /qst/ has been slow enough that I don't think we have to worry about autosage before that.

Thank you, anon.

You're sad to see LCPL 'Joker' go, she's been with you since your first real command as a Corporal. You sign off on her form, and Clayton's admission into the 7th. You consider it a poor trade.

"Just... look, if she ever wants back in.... well, tell her that there's always a place for her here in the 7th."

"Sure thing, Lieutenant." LT Saint smiles, partly in understanding and partly because she and Schuster have always gotten along fine. They'll do fine. "Bad Hand was waiting for you out front, by the way. I’ll see you later before the concert, Supply Specialist Jale’s lodging. Bye, Prince!”

A short time and some procrastinated paperwork later you hear voices ahead of you. After Black Company's command corp and the Captain's personal guard being decimated in the Highlander attack, the 7th have become the de-facto HQ guard. You and the 7th are the Captain's personal mailled fist. The voices come from Trooper Nissar Belhamun and Trooper 'Smiles' standing guard at the Manor entrance.

"Smiles, my friend, habibi, why this face is looking worry worry?" Trooper Nissar Belhamun, the mage-slave escaped from Kalgarri, tries to reassure his erstwhile companion Trooper 'Smiles' of some mild disagreement over tonight's festivities. "Is sagheer, very little small spell. What could be of the going wrong?"

"The last time you used this particular incantation, the second floor of the Puke Paladin Inn exploded." The hulking, scarred Wildborn warrior does not look worried to you, but you suppose his best friend Nissar has grown use to interpreting the subtle changes in the Wildborn's passive (and horrific) expression. "The odds of this occurring again as you perform one of your 'magik tricks' and tonight's musical social event are remarkably similar."

"Nissar would not be of the hurting you! Never Nissar be doing this! Nissar be careful this time! So careful!"

"Nissar, you are the single most unlikely person to intentionally bring me harm. Stand to!" The Wildborn grumbles, nodding at your approach in the hall. They snap to a parade-ground salute, drilled into them by the late CPL 'Jack' Marcus. Although perhaps the most oddball battle buddies in the Company, their discipline in the presence of superiors would pass any Neumunster muster.

"As you were, Troopers." You nod, pleased to see them. They are among your favourite minions, troublesome gambling and illicit-magik use aside. "Where is SGT Bad Hand?"

[2/4]
>>
>>2773257

[3/4]

"Yes, mighty Prince. The SGT Bad Man is doing the pass of water. He will be here in money fairy tea... Nissar nods emphatically, broad smile. He turns back to his friend Smiles. ”Yes, good. Nissar am trusting the worthy.”

”Indeed.” The Wildborn grumbles. ”I estimate the chances of you intentionally causing me harm against my wishes at 3%.”

”What this is?? 3% you say? Is low number, this I understand but..." Nissar mutters as they stand easy. He looks devastated, heartbroken that his fellow squaddie would list him as have any odds at all of turning on him. "You are sure it is no zero? I am swear I..."

"It would be zero if you didn't occasionally use magik when I am within a 6-metre radius of you." The massive grey skin warrior folds mighty arms and shifts to the side, making sure that Nissar cannot see his face as Trooper Smiles winks at you. You were not even aware that Wilborn even could wink.

"...Ah...Oh!"" Nissar looks perplexed for a moment, trying to figure this out. Then shouts in shock pointing in the air, then "Ah, ahah! Is not intentimal! I am meaning intestinal. So IS zero chance of the me of betraying you! AHAHA, nuktat kabira, habibi! Funny! Is very very funny!"

The only thing you find remotely funny about this exchange is the overreaction of Nissar to the attempt at a joke. As for the mighty Trooper Smiles, he does not laugh as Wildborn never laugh. But for once you are certain that the permanent smile plastered on intimidating creature is in fact genuine.

"What are you lot giggling at?" SGT 'Bad Hand' queries, stepping out of a bit of cultivated shrubbery to the side doing up his belt. Nissar doesn't answer, too busy laughing at what he thinks is the greatest joke in the world. Or maybe just the first common-tongue joke he's understood. "Feh. Fine, be that way. Hey brother! How is all that paperwork treating ya?"

"Mmph." You grunt, knowing that your old comrade is just trying to get a rise out of you.

"Yeah I figured as much. Fek that Officer life, I get enough in this NCO gig. Never should have learnt how to read… Hey did you hear?" SGT 'Bad Hand' grins widely, wrapping his arm around as much of your shoulder as he can. ”About that platoon of Free Alliance soldiers that snuck into town after we defeated the highlanders?”

”The Captain did mention something yes, but I didn’t get too many details.”

”Yeah brother, it was fekking crazy! Crawled right up into the breach while you were flying into their camp and waited, lying down in with the corpses, until the cultists rezzed that pile of dead. Then, and I’m not joking, they pretended be undead themselves and just walked right into town. This Chevalisse Knight guy that was with them had some gimmick that meant the other dead didn’t detect them.”

”What was their plan?”

”Kill the Captain, they said. Then you, if they got that far.” Your old friend Bad Hand grins with yellow teeth, giving you a leery look. ”Or maybe they snuck in just to see how ugly you really are. You should charge admission, brother, haha!”

”I didn’t hear that part, SGT. Insane, they’d never have made it out alive.”

”That was the plan apparently, one last ditch effort to save the Empire. After the Big Guy showed up our boys captured them.” SGT Bad Hand sounds like he actually admires them. You suppose he’s always had a thing for crazy and suicidal ideas. Like bedding Superior Syka. ”I didn’t hear what happened to them afterwards. Did you?”

"Actually..."

> "The Captain offered them a job." Your temple is throbbing at the inevitable security issues. [Black Company recruits heavily from Free Alliance diehards]

On one hand it's a pittance of redemption for what the necromancer is doing to neumunster and the FA and in combat they won't drop dead when we fight holy/unholy powers but on the flipside that security issue may well be an issue and they are mortal with all that entails.

Also nasir remains the most amusing Kriegstrom pvt.

We are alive..... however a abomination quantifies as though I think is debated

Also. I like their guts.

Its one thing to assault a enemy base camp as a force of nature. Another as plain old flesh and blood. If they survive, they'll do well.

Black company is really turning into something strange isn't it

>Vampires for black ops night raids/recon

Is he? Prince has typically chosen his softy options when directly dealing with his brothers and sisters in black. I think we have well established that Prince gives on average 1/10 feks for anyone outside of it.

”Captain offered them a job then and there.” You growl as you walk beside SGT Bad Hand down the hill from the manor to the Kresden courtyard. Easier enough for her, it’s you that will be the one having to protect her and the Company against any of the new recruits stupid enough to hold on to a grudge. You resist the urge to try and massage your temples through your Blackthorn helm. Although no one has had the stones to say it outright, your brothers and sisters are clearly more comfortable with your intimidating armour than your disfigured face.

”Haha nice! I’ll be well glad to have some hard cunts on board. I’ve had my gut-full of spooky skeletons. No offence to Mask!” SGT Bad Hand’s barking laughter echoes in the quiet streets. He leans in conspiratorially, with a hoarse whisper. ”Say brother… how bad is it under that scary helm of yours? I’ve heard rumours but…”

You lift your helmet up, giving him a quick look.

”Dark Father fek me!” Your closest comrade and friend physically recoils. ”Brother… that has got to suck…”

”It’s the price I had to pay. But to not even be able to shave…”

”Fek that, brother!” Bad Hand stares at you aghast, amazed that is what you’re worried about. ”I’m so sorry Prince but… well, those whores at the Harpy’s Nest are definitely going to be charging you double price now!”

You roll your eyes as you readjust your helm. They say that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. SGT Bad Hand just happens to be both.

There is a lot of activity in the Kresden main courtyard. The black of the company dominates the scene, though there are scatterings of skeletons, cultists and a few Yellow Dogs. CPL Hirstun of Ligh sits with his new ‘Dozen’; his few aged veterans, the new Skald recruits, as well as Knight-of-the-Line ‘Spitfire’ Spicario and the wolfman Trooper ‘Pelt’.

The Skald Trooper Hans Rusti salutes you with a bloody two-handed axe at your approach. ”Ja, det erBlack Prince! Honnor!”

”Get that axe clean before the blood dries, Trooper.” You nod as you pass, indicating for the men to stand at ease.

”Ja Kommandor! Forst Kresden, deretter videre til Valkenheim!” The grinning Skald nods. Evidently, he can understand common as well as Nissar, even if he’s not inclined to speak much of it.

”To the 7th Kreigstrom!” CPL Hirstun of Ligh shouts, clutching a captured Neumunster Legio eagle. You wonder where the other one got to. ”The hardest fekkers in all the land!”

”HOH!” The squaddies cheer, raising their weapons.

”Madre abbi pietà. Pelt! Stop picking at it!” The Sabari musketeer ‘Spitfire’ Spicario admonishes the Grenn as he literally licks his wound.

The white-maned wolfman looks like he’s been hacked at by a butcher, the Doc had to put him back together several times during this siege. It looks like Doc had to put some sort of neck-brace on the creature to stop them reopening the wounds.

”Don’t snap at me, weakling southern-flesh! I’ll gnaw the flesh from your…” Only you can understand the feral snarls of the beast, but Spitfire gets the picture.

”Don’t you growl at me, cucciolo. Aw, poor bambino... Come here you fluffy little…”

“Oh, it is pet time? Pet time isn’t so bad…” The Grenn’s growling subsides into contented grumbles as his tongue lolls out.

Sometimes you have to stop and wonder at how bizarre this organisation is.

There’s a long line of would-be recruits in front of the Annalist’s desks. He takes their name one-by-one, so long as they’re vouched for by another member of the Company. ’We don’t take just anyone.’ What a fekking joke. Some of these Tassenland boys signing up are as young as… well you, when you first said the said the words. A fair few are younger still.

”What?” LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam squints at you and Bad Hand suspiciously, her tweaking of the odd Albani aux violin-like contraption momentarily interrupted. ”I mean… what, sir?”

You give a vague gesture towards Bad Hand, not sure what the madman is up to. He kicks up a foot on the crate next to Murder, a particularly devilish grin. He nods over his shoulder at the line of recruits.

”You see that wanna-be Company boy there? The one standing in line with no one to vouch for him?” Murder nods, following SGT Bad Hand’s sly gaze. ”Yeah, that’s right. The blondie.”

”Mhmm. Cute, but typical mamma’s boy haircut and shitty armour. What about him?”

”I hear that this little mamma’s boy…” You can practically sense the barely suppressed glee from the SGT as he leans in even closer. ”…is Chevalisse.”

”Hold this.” You almost drop the damn Albani music device as Murder shoves it into your grasp.

”Hang on…” You grumble, struggling with the instrument, but she’s already halfway over there. ”Sergeant! What the Below do you think you’re playing at, starting this shit?”

”Oh I don’t start shit, brother.” Bad Hand chuckles, twirling his unkempt mustache. ”I just stir the pot…”

Also, give a speech to the new recruits.

Recruits, Chevalise, Neumensters, lend me your ears;
I come to bury children not to save them.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with This Black Company. The noble Neumensters
Hath told you we are feckless mercenaries:
And it is so, and it is a grievous insult,
And grievously hath we answer’d it.
Here, under leave of Chevalise and the rest–
For Chevalise are honourable men;
So are they all, all honourable men–
Come I to speak here in this Recruitment Square.
We are all brothers, faithful and just to each other:
But Neumensters say that we are feckless mercenaries;
And they are honourable men.
They, in their unjust wars hath brought many lands under their banners
And many in their ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this these Feckless Mercenaries also do?
When that the orphans have died, Company hath wept:
The Company should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Neumensters say we are feckless mercenaries;
And Neumensters are all honourable man.
You all did see that on the Ghastly night
I thrice thwarted the Vampires their blood due,
And thrice were they subjugated: was this dishonorable?
Yet Neumensters say we are feckless mercenaries;
And Neumensters are all honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what they have spoken,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You will all come to love this Company, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to join.
O judgment! thou were once wedded to Nobler beasts,
And men will once again find their reason. Bear with me;
I have sacrificed blood and youth, friends and soul for this Company,
And I must pause till i find another amongst you to swell our ranks.

Alright, maybe something like this?

Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
We have all brought to the lands of Neumenster.
Blood and destruction have been so in use,
And dreadful objects so familiar,
That mothers had but smiled when they beheld
Their infants quartered with the hands of war,
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds,
And Our spirit, ranging for revenge,
With the Father by our side came hot from hell,
Have in these lands with a murderous voice yelled
“Havoc!” and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed wafts above the earth
With carrion men, dead and groaning for burial.

”Name and Rank?” The Annalist says, wearing his spectacles for once.

Technically anyone vouching for a new recruit can grant them a rank below their own when signing up, pending the Captain’s approval. The paperwork for which inevitably trickles down to her Lieutenant’s like yourself. The scruffy, redhaired Skald LCPL Lerrek Jurgensen is at the front of the line, a Tassenland kid in tow.

”Est ‘Troopah’…” The Skald says, scratching his wild beard. ”Est…Linger.”

”Lederlingen.” The young Tassenland conscript says. Most of these Tassenland boys were as soft as milk before the siege. At some places on the wall they sustained 90% casualties. Some of them broke, gone battle-mad, while others hardened. He repeats himself. ”Timothy Lederlingen.”

The Skald nods in approval. Ja, wot I sed. Linger.”

”Welcome to the Black Company, Trooper Linger.” The Annalist taps at the bottom of the form. ”Sign here.”

”It’s not…” . Judging from the boy’s cold eyes and cool expression, he is one of the ones that hardened. He shrugs, then signs. ”Fine. Linger works.”

Sometimes it takes a while for nicknames to catch on. Sometimes it happens right away.

”Hey you.” LCPL Murder sidles up to the blonde recruit with the mamma’s boy haircut. The kind that a fresh-faced Chevalisse squire or paladin-in-training might wear. ”I heard you was Chevalisse.”

”I got a reputation, you’ll hear it if you ask around. Want to know what it is?” She leans in close, breathing against the nervous lad’s cheek. ”I got me a reputation… for killing Chevalisse.”

”H-holy Mother preserve us without sin…” The boy grimaces, paying close attention to the knife planted softly between his breeches.
”Yeah, pray away. Just like the rest of the damn god-botherers.” LCPL Murder grins wickedly. The last time you saw her smile like that was two days ago. She was elbows deep in a screaming Paladin on the ramparts. “I hate the Below damned Chev-pigs so much… why, sometimes I just can’t help myself.”

You’re on the verb of intervening before that knife cuts something that can’t be uncut, when LCPL Murder blows the lad a kiss and removes the knife.

”Why don’t we get you signed up quickly now?” She slaps him on the back, hard. ”That way, you won’t be Chevalisse no more. You’ll be Black Company.”

“If they had babies, do you think they’d come out red or blonde?” Your insufferable SGT continues stroking his moustache thoughtfully, watching LCPL Murder and the Chevalisse squire finish signing up.

“Below damn it, Bad Hand. Didn’t you see enough action during the siege?” Your brother shrugs in response, as if to say it was a jolly good time but he’s ready for more. “That’s it… I’m going to report to the Captain before you send me off the deep end.”

“Nothing but love for ya, brother!” Bad Hand waves cheerfully, flashing you what he thinks must be a winning smile. ”Before you go though, aren’t you going to deal with that situation?”

”What situation?” You ask as the wind intensifies.

”THAT situation.” Bad Hand grins, pointing upwards.

You suppose that, in the strictest sense, Asgorga did not push in. Everyone in line just got out of the way very quickly as the black dragon none-too-gently slams into the courtyard, the gust of wind from his flapping wings sending debris flying. Annalist Stale practically dives on top of the paperwork on his desk to save it. The giant monster dips his head at your approach, you nod in return. You’re about to vouch for him when three Manor maids slide of his lowered wing in quick succession, lining up behind him.

”And just who are they?” You stop up short, dumb-struck. One night on the town with you and he’s already giving out joyrides.

”THESE ARE SALLY, MINDY AND JOSI.” Asgorga dips his neck at the dainty would-be recruits. They curtsey in unison, clearly unintimidated by your presence after growing used to the presence of the massive fire-breathing lizard. You try not to think about how they realise Asgorga’s grumble was an introduction to you. ”NEW RECRUITS FOR SUPPLY. I WAS GOING TO VOUCH FOR THEM AFTER YOU CONVINCED THE BOOK-MASTER TO MAKE ME IMMORTAL BY JOINING THE BLACK COMPANY ANNALS.”

”What do you think this is? The 7th Tea Party Platoon?” You scowl incredulously.

”Actually, that’s not such a bad id…” Bad Hand leans in, one finger upraised.

”Shut UP, Sergeant.” You growl, turning your full attention back to Asgorga and the maid recruits. He at least has the good grace to look bashful, a particularly odd expression for a dragon.

…Fek it. You grimace, you guess they’ll be Qar-Tel’s problem at least. And his paperwork. First in line, you turn to Annalist Stale. He peers over his tiny spectacles at both you and your newest addition to the Company.

”Name and Rank?” He says drily, quill at the ready.

Also we can make Asgorga take care of the baby griffon/pegasus and tell him his goal is to make it so they DON'T fear him, otherwise they'll be useless in battle.

Well.

That they don't only fear him given that we ourselves are a creature of fear too, in part. But that he has to teach them to love and respect him too.

”ASGORGA. Corporal.” You suppose only the insane would volunteer to join a Kriegstrom squad led by a fire-breathing dragon. But, in a mercenary company of veteran madmen and hardcases, only the truly crazy join the dangerous 7th Kriegstrom Platoon in the first place.

The Annalist spends some time trying to piece of paper big enough for CPL Asgorga to stamp with his talon, he eventually settles for a scale imprint. You leave just as Asgorga realises the difficulty in vouching for the maids without a blacktongue translator present.

”Ah, Black Prince. A pleasure to see you.” You find Page #137 waiting for you outside where Saint told you to come. The daemon-child’s sharp smile appears almost genuine, perhaps he is reconsidering as a snack or plaything following your ascension. ”I hear we’ll be marching out day after tomorrow. I’m happy to leave this mortal dungheap behind. Off to new adventures, and new mortal slaughterfields.”

”#137, likewise. I thought you would be eager to stick around and see what Syka does with the place. Blood orgies and all.”

”Blood orgies are vampire thing. And, I may add, that is an extremely offensive slur against daemonkind.”

”It is?” You’re not sure if the deamonhost is pulling your leg. If Trooper Smiles is telling jokes now anything is possible.

”Of course. We just -eat- our food, we don’t copulate with it first.” Page #137 rolls his eyes as you walk through a dimly lit and distinctly cultist-looking hall, as if explaining things to a dim-witted child. ”Besides, I think that nothing that happens here will be anywhere as interesting as what happens wherever the Black Company goes. Dragons, deadmen, wolfmen and all sorts of collections of mortals that even -I- find intriguing. You’ve assembled quite the bizarre and lethal assortment of comrades over this campaign.”

You can’t exactly deny it. Besides, coming from #137, it almost sounded like a compliment.

Within seconds of entering the decrepit Kresden townhouse you almost blew Specialist Jale’s head off when he jumps out from behind a curtain leading to another occult room.

”SURPRI- oh fek, put the gun away!” The newly-inducted Specialist Jale, one-time cultist and self-proclaimed ‘student of the dark arts’ recoils from the barrel of the Ajiyimad Pistol you whipped out when he burst into the room. He wouldn’t be the first cultist whose skull you’ve explosively decorated a room with. He flinches, the barrel not wavering from his face. ”…please? It’ll be worth your while!”

You squint suspiciously, though he cannot see you do so through your Blackthorn helm. You only put the gun away when LT Saint enters the room and nods at you. On her shoulder is what appears to be the missing Legio Eagle, captured in battle… was it really only yesterday? It seems like a year ago.

”Heh, I was halfway hoping you’d pull the trigger.” Saint chuckles, stroking the metal trophy. You’re quite sure she has gone mad. Madder than when she lost Trooper Kid.

”Almost did.” You respond, trying to avoid pointing out that your protégé is petting an inanimate object. At least his robes are more black than red these days, ‘Demagogue Jale’ was always such a mouthful. ”I was wondering why you asked to meet here. Are you two buddies now? Don’t you hate him?”

”Oh, he’s not so bad. A below-damned heretic, yes. But after a day with all those usual zealots of Syka running around town he looks positively enlightened.” Saint rolls her eyes at the beaming heretic, ”Don’t let that get to your head, Specialist.”

”Oh yeah no whatever, of course not sir. Uh, Ma’am? Okay, whew, so let me explain…” The ex-cultist Jale begins rambling into a complex explanation of… you literally have no idea.

”So the good news is that this is ground breaking stuff on the Fourth Alignment Wall theory, pretty much puts everything Ichabod the One-Hundredth-Circle Eater wrote about it right into the waste heap.” Cultist Jale, still wrapped almost head to toe in bandages from the burns inflicted during the siege, continues chattering animatedly. He’s taken Synthezene, that’s for sure, but clearly he is excited about more than just drugs. ”The bad news? Right. Well. We got the soul back, wasn’t easy but that’s why-“

”Jale. Stop.” Your head hurts. [b”What. Did you. Do?”

The golden Legio Eagle on LT Saint’s shoulder moves.

”It’s me, Mister Prince! Jenny!” With a flutter of surprisingly lifelike golden wings the missing Legio eagle springs forward and lands on your outstretched arm. If not for your armour the metal talons would have sunk in deep. ”Somehow Elia, Pagey and cultist-guy…”

The animatronic eagle suddenly seizes up with a barking cough.

”++COMANDA NU ESTE NECESARĂ, VĂ RĂSPUNCIREA++ -ahem, sorry I do that sometimes.” ‘Jenny’ explains to you bashfully. Or as bashfully as a possessed unblinking metal eagle can be. ”I don’t remember what happened when Elia, Pagey and cultist-guy saved me from the wreck of Princess Snuffles, but they said- ++VREAȚI OTELUL MAŞINĂ++ -ahem, they said I’d have to er… …follow you around?”

”What? Why would you…” You catch the meaningful look from Saint, Jale and also Page #137 surprisingly. So -this- is the magik item they promised to work on, the one that would help you store excess soul energy. Probably a bit much to explain that all to little Jenny right now. ”Right, of course. Best you stick with me, I’ll keep you safe.”

”What’s wrong with your voice, mister?” The metal eagle cocks it’s unblinking eye at you.

”…sore throat.” You find the sharp beak to be uncomfortably close to your face, even through the helm. It looks positively vicious. ”Just stick with me…”

…what do you call her now?

This is the second last update of the thread. I’m spending most of tomorrow putting together a little something special for you guys for the final meta thread where there will be Erhu-riffing, a concert and cracking open a cold one with the Company brothers and sisters. We’ll go over how you guys have done; the final fate of Prince and his comrades; how you consistently upset my plans and outdid yourselves and also any other questions you might have. Some of you guys have been following this from the very start, over three years ago, and I’d like to thank you for your participation and input in this awesome quest.
It should be a chill thread, hopefully a week from now.

Kresden North-West Walls, Early Evening

”Captain.” You nod at the blue-haired figure looking out across the walls.
Ironically, the Necromancer’s spell that had twisted the majority of the living Free Alliance had done nothing to resurrect the dead sprawled out before the walls. Even now teams of Syka’s cultists raised batches of those slain in their assault of the walls over the previous days.

”Lieutenant Prince. How did you like Specialist Jale’s little present?”

”You knew about that?” You ask, surprised. You had already informed the Captain of LT Saint’s intense dislike of her.

”Of course.” Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova smiles, turning to face you. ”Saint and I have our differences. She’s too sentimental by far, but I saw nothing wrong with letting her have this.”

”That was… kind of you.”

”Kindness can go to the dogs.” The Captain shrugs. ”It was practical. I’ll need her tactical thinking on this next contract. We already have several bidders for a contract in the Rakasha Raj, I’ll need her on board for that.”

”Mmm.” You grunt. There was a time that a cushy job on the sun-kissed beaches of Rakasha would have had you jumping for joy. Now you don’t particularly care. ”How did it go with the good doctor?”

”I made it clear to him the lack of prospects he had. He will join, but he refuses to carry a weapon or do anything that will endanger another life.” Kiranova shifts uncomfortably, her wounds will take some time to heal. You suspect that she wears the greatcoat now to hide the bandages as much as to keep out the cold. ”If I am honest, I suspect that he has only joined to ensure that his children are kept safe from the clutches of Superior Syka.”

[1/2]
>>
>>2781769

[1/2]

”So many new faces in the Company…” Captain sighs, pulling the greatcoat over closer. ”And I barely recognise most of them. Are we even the same Black Company from where we started out? Have I led us into something else, something worse than what we were?"

”We stayed true to our nature, Captain. That's what matters.” Your looming figure offers scant comfort, but at least you believe what you say. ”Honour the contract. Finish the mission. Keep our people alive. We survived this, we got through it all against the odds.”

”Yes… yes, I suppose we did…”

You can sense a gap that wasn’t there before. The lines have shifted again, this time most certainly back to the role of inspiring commander and loyal subordinate. Ever since that night where you sacrificed everything in Below, when Kiranova first saw the full price you had paid and what you had become. Any dream of you holding her in your arms again…

No, I don’t need those mortal weaknesses anymore. I am better off this way. The Company, and the Captain, will be safe with me guarding them.

As it should be.

Someone talked about misery.
Do you regret it?

I fekking do.

Saint is not for lewd, she's for trauma

Next one better be wholesome af, damn

Kiranova staring with regret at the lake named after her. The last great thing the real Prince ever did for her, and she just had to play the ice bitch instead of showing her appreciation.

tell me that ain't wholesome

Last one tonight.
Because I'm tired AND hogging the thread without the QM present, and that's just rude.

Was planning a meme with Saint and the Sinners in a Queen stage pose or poster, but opted for cartoon pet therapy for trauma.
Cursed image, never again

Have a nice night guys

Yo, you DO know I was memeing when I talked about bribing for points, right?

I pointed out it was a joke since the start
>>2782636

It would've been cool to close up with triple success, but it is not the end of the world.
Last post will just be Prince, Mask and maybe Saint to appreciate the ehru instead of the whole company. Don't really think it is that big of a deal.
I was going to make fanart whatever the result.
I get it, we might've get a hint on some sort of misterious power, well quest's over anyway...

>>2787933
Thanks Qm

Also as Spicaro=best girl thanks for this last piece! Look at him blep that tongue, trying to look so stoic but clearly enjoying it.
>>
>>2775699
. . . Wasn't it Spicario, not Murder, who hated the Chevalisse?
>>
>>2793902
...No?

I don't think best girl even hates anyone imo. The elves who ruined her hat maybe?
>>
>>2793910
FEKKING ELVES.
>>
>>2793912
I hope there's elves in Good Guy Knight Quest
>>
>>2793925
How many degrees Kelvins will we be, which is of course units of Kill Elves.
>>
In the infinite number of possibilities, Kiranova is still Best Girl in all of them. And at least one pair of Kiranova and Prince got together and is happy.

You can't stop me hoping anons. SOMEWHERE THEY GOT TOGETHER AND ARE HAPPY DAMMIT
