You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

It was dark. Far darker than you were hoping it would be. Not even Luna's fell light was illuminating the landscape, Her absence small and diluted in the sky as She was reduced to a thin crescent.

At the very least, that meant less chance of being harassed by Elves. Without Luna's light to guide them, their advantages in the dark were significantly blunted.

But theses assassins that you had encountered probably had no such compunctions. In fact, you were fairly certain at least a few of the surviving ones were shadowing you right now, waiting for the chance to strike.

Solaire still hasn't quite recovered after taking that heavy hit from the giant worm you had slain, but at least he's still breathing, and mumbles a few incoherent words while slung on your back.

Morgan, meanwhile, was acting as the scout, all of her senses going into overdrive as she tries to keep maximum awareness in all directions. Her ears were constantly twitching as her head swivels from side to side to give her eyes and nose the best coverage possible.

This was not exactly an ideal situation.

"The others should be coming out to look for us by now." Morgan whispers as the two of you trudge through the dark forest. "I can shoot a flare arrow up to signal our location. They'll be able to find us quicker."

You pause. Wouldn't that also alert the assassins to your location?

"I know the assassins might see, but it might be a risk we have to take." Morgan sighs.

You nod to Morgan, and she grimly pulls a special arrow from her quiver, the tip wrapped in red cloth. She nocks the arrow into her bow, points it directly upwards, and lets loose.

The arrow disappears in the darkness before you're blinded briefly by a red flash. And above, you could see the arrow, hanging in the air like a baleful red star, marking your location and bathing the forest around you in crimson hue.

And you don't even need to have Morgan's enhanced hearing to notice the sudden rustling of leaves and branches in the brush around you. And you were pretty certain it was not your party.

"They're surrounding us." Morgan grunts, readying another arrow. "It's do or die now. We either hold out or we die."

You nod, and then remember that Solaire was still slumped over your back. Fighting was going to be tough as long as you had to keep making sure he was safe.

You quickly point to Morgan and then to Solaire as you draw your halberd. It's up to her to revive him to get him back into the fight.

"What?!" Morgan blurts. "I'm not a cleric! How am I supposed to-"

You trust that she would think of something as you step forward with your halberd. The rustling was getting louder, and no doubt the assassins would preparing for their final chance to get at their target.

You see some glinting of metal as arrows fly out of the darkness. Heavy crossbow bolts that could pierce regular armor, but your own armor was far from regular. Not even close. The bolts bounce harmlessly off your breastplate.

As an act of defiance, your armor flares as its magical properties exude magical flame, further illuminating the forest and catching two assassins who were attempting to flank you. Not wasting a second, you swing your halberd outwards, smashing the axe end right into the side of one of the assassins, causing him to scream as your weapon bites into his flesh.

You then quickly let go with one hand and twist your body, striking the second assassin in the chin as he tries to duck past your guard. Then there's a blast of golden light and he's sent flying into the darkness.

"Haha! I must thank you for your efforts, Morgan!" Solaire laughs as he gets back up to his feet, his armor glowing vibrantly. "You certainly know how to fill and old man's bones with new vigor!"

"Th-thanks." Morgan murmurs as if embarrassed.

"My, I've woken up in quite a conundrum!" Solaire says in a jolly tone as a bolt flies past his helmet. "What's our course of action, Templar?"

You point in the direction towards the Monastery. It would do no good staying here now that all of you could move and fight.

"Ah, so we keep pushing forward! Excellent!" Solaire says happily. "Then let us sally forth!"

And with that, Solaire charges forward, his glowing armor leading the way. You take one look at Morgan who nods and you follow after him, your armor exuding a brilliant orange flame.

Morgan follows behind you at some distance, making sure none of the assassins could sneak in behind you.

Up ahead, though, you could see more assassins in your way, but these ones were properly armed and armored, with some forming a large shield wall while others stood behind with long pikes. Looks like they were prepared to physically box Solaire if needed.

Solaire barges straight through the shield wall with little issue, bowling over assassins as if they were nothing but twigs. Meanwhile, you crash into your section of the shield wall, but the assassins manage to hold firm, stopping your momentum.

Meanwhile, you could hear the loud twanging of Morgan's bow right behind you, and you can feel crossbow bolts bouncing and impacting against your back. Enemy reinforcements weren't far behind.

And up ahead, you could see Solaire circling around in an attempt to assist you.

You wave frantically at Solaire to keep moving. He was the assassins' target after all.

Solaire pauses for a moment. He was smart to know that he would do nobody any good putting himself back in danger. He gives you a respectful nod and continues falling back into the forest.

You can already see many of the assassins break off to give chase, particularly the pike armed assassins, who drop their heavy and unwieldy weapons and dash after him. Two shield assassins remained to keep you blocked.

At this point, Morgan is coming up on your rear, firing arrows into the darkness as crossbow bolts hound her all the way. Fortunately, it didn't appear she had been hurt at all so far.

You grab the top rim of one of the shields and tear it out of its bearer's hands, sending it twirling off into the night and then headbutt the assassin with a CLANG as your armored helmet slams into his skull, no doubt cracking it open.

The second assassin, whose flank was now left open, drops his shield and attempts to pull his sword, but gives you the opportunity to stab in with your spear point, the fang tip piercing the assassin's chest. Even if the stab into the heart didn't kill him, the venom would.

That left you an open path ahead as you charge forwards. Already, you could see several slain assassins, both pierced by arrows and slashed by burning sword. Looks like Morgan and Solaire were making good progress.

It was then that you saw Morgan in a running shootout with a trio of assassins as they laid down suppressing fire with their crossbows, checking her progress.

The crossbowmen still futilely attempt to keep you away, but you're already in among them, charging in and piercing one with your spear point and pinning him against a tree. However, you feel a weight on your shoulders as Morgan leaps up onto them, planting a foot on each shoulder as she drills an arrow into each of the crossbowmens' backs.

You and Morgan enter the next clearing, where you're immediately met by Ozen in her intimidating, gargantuan black armor. She turns momentarily to see who is approaching, ready to reach out and crush your head like a melon with her massive gauntlet. She thankfully stops when she sees it's you and Morgan.

The remaining assassins, however, were not quite so lucky. You could see crushed and torn apart bodies strewn all over the clearing. Ozen's own acolytes had formed a defensive perimeter, finishing off those assassins Ozen had missed, and you could see a couple tending to Solaire.

"Oh, do be sure to leave at least one alive for questioning." Ozen chirps to her followers. "And be sure to check for poison! These assassin types do seem to love choosing death over talking..."

Meanwhile, you could see Solaire giving a rather harsh look of disapproval in Ozen's direction. You figure he wasn't quite happy with the way Ozen... dispatched his attackers.

You give Ozen a simple nod of acknowledgement before hurrying over to Solaire and gently pushing him away to head back towards the Monastery.

"Um, thanks for the help." Morgan says softly to Ozen.

"Don't mention it. That's why you fired that signal arrow, correct? We simply responded to it the moment we saw it!" Ozen says. "Though I'm sure it's better for all of us to make sure the Grand Master makes it home safely!"

It looks like Solaire is about to say something in response, but another gentle shove from you convinces him to stay quiet and keep moving.

You, Morgan, and Solaire continue on in relative silence until finally, the lights of the Monastery and Eisenwand come into view. It's then that Solaire finally speaks.

"My deepest thanks to the both of you." He bows his head to you and Morgan. "I have the feeling that if not for our cooperation, I would not be here as I am."

"No problem." Morgan nods. "Friends help each other, right?"

"Of course! Such is the spirit of cooperation!" Solaire laughs, though it's a bit forced this time. "In any case, I should be returning to the Cathedral. Solana and Vally are probably worried sick about me. I suppose this is where we part ways."

>Yeah, you better head back to the Monastery.

Assassins aren't limited to the woods. Also it will be good to see a templar and the head of the paladins cooperating.

You shake your head and take position next to Solaire. You've already gone though all this trouble going out to find and protect him, that it wouldn't be right to have him go the last leg of his journey alone.

"Ha! You certainly are a dutiful one, I'll give you that." Solaire laughs a bit more warmly. "Let us be off!"

By this point, there wasn't too much to be worried about, being in sight of Eisenwand. However, your little trio was still awkwardly quiet.

>Ask Solaire what he thinks of Ozen.
>Ask Morgan how she got Solaire back up.

You turn to Morgan and stare at her, wondering exactly how she got Solaire back on his feet so quickly.

"Huh?" Morgan blinks, not sure what you wanted.

You point to her, and then to Solaire.

Morgan pauses as she puts two and two together. However, as she does so, you notice her face turn red a bit.

"I didn't really do anything." She mumbles.

Well, that was just a plain lie, you're pretty sure.

"Do what?" Solaire wonders. "Ah, your method of reviving me? Well it was simple-"

"No don't say it!" Morgan wails. "You're sworn to silence on this!"

"Ah, that I am." Solaire nods in agreement. "Quite the predicament."

Curious. Well, whatever it was, it was something Morgan considered embarrassing. Then again, considering it was Morgan, that could possibly be anything.

"Nnnnnnn." Morgan mumbles as you ruffle her hair, but she doesn't say anything else.

"You certainly seem to love doing that." Solaire observes. "And Morgan does seem to appreciate it quite a lot. Perhaps I should try this on Vally? She's always been rather distant as of late..."

You just nod and give Solaire a thumbs up. It was a brilliant idea.

"Haha! Then I shall try it!" Solaire chortles heartily.

By this point, you had reached Eisenwand's gate. The City Guard do nothing to stop you, as you were all a common enough sight, but you do notice several Paladins standing guard as well. However, they at least seem to recognize Solaire and don't make any moves.

"Hmmm, quite a few new faces around here." Solaire muses.

"A lot of new faces." Morgan corrects him.

The rest of the journey to the Cathedral is uneventful, besides the larger than usual number of Paladins in the streets. Like the ones at the gates, none of them bother you, no doubt because of Solaire's presence. Soon enough, you're all at the gates of the Cathedral.

"Well now, since you've come all this way, why not stay the night?" Solaire offers as the gates to the Cathedral creak open. The Paladin guards there look nervously at each other, but say nothing.

"Um, well..." Morgan pauses.

"Now come on, I'm sure Solana and Vally would love to see you two again!" Solaire says cheerfully. "Under much better circumstances, of course!"

That's right, last time you were here was for Nino's treatment. Certainly no time to relax or socialize back then.

You just nod in agreement. You don't see any problem staying over.

"Haha! It's settled then!" Solaire slaps you on the back rather roughly. "We shall feast and tell tales of our exploits today! I'm sure Solana and Vally would be thrilled to hear about them!"

"Thrilled to scold him, no doubt." Morgan mutters to you.

You just shrug at Morgan's observation until the both of you are roughly tugged away by Solaire, still brimming with youthful enthusiasm.

You sort of wonder what it would be like to stay a night at the Cathedral that DIDN'T involve an infirmary bed...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week, and stay tuned for the Macross finale on Friday!
