Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought. Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise though the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.

When we last left Baldr, he was attempting to get through to Selenas after she had awoken from her torture induced sleep.

If you don’t snap her out of this now, she may never recover, you think as you rise to your feet and rush over to her side.

She is curled tight, her hands clasping tight around her head as she cries. In-between her sobs you can hear her whispering softly “No, no more, stay away, get out.” The Queen’s search through her mind had been rough, and in spite of your instructions, it looked like she had struggled against her leading to a more forceful search. You cannot blame her for resisting though, as even you might’ve a hard time simply letting the Queen crawl through your mind.

You lean over and attempt break through to Selenas, she cannot be left in this state.

>Give me some d20 +2 to see if you can get through to her.

>2 Successes

Reaching out you gently pull Selenas’s hands away from her head. Taking her face into your hands you lift it up to look at you. Selenas recoils at this action and begins to struggle in your grip, her eyes squeezed shut trying to block everything out. Holding her firm you say “Shhh, relax Selenas, it’s me Baldr.” At the sound of your name, her struggling relaxes, but her eyes stay shut. “Open your eyes and look at me,” say to her, but her eyes remain squeezed shut. You tell her once again, “It’s ok Selenas, it’s just me here, you can open your eyes.” But her eyes remained screwed shut. This time leaning on your Commanding Voice you say “Look at me Selenas.” Her face and eyes twitch but remain closed; she starts to struggle against you again. “Look at me,” You finally shout and her eyes snap open. Her eyes quiver and dart wildly around the room coming to rest on your face. You give her a broad and reassuring smile saying “See, it’s all over now, I’m here.” Tears welling up in her eyes again and Selenas hugs you tightly burying her face in your neck and cries uncontrollably, her hot tears falling on your collar bone and running down and under your armor. Surprised, you can only wrap your arms around her and let her tears flow.

Slowly Selenas’s sobs and sniffles start to subside and she pulls herself together enough to look up at you. “Thank you,” she whispers hoarsely attempting to wipe the tears away from her face with a shirt sleeve.

Speaking of which, we were told we wouldn't get an army and continue using our own forces, but what forces are those? The goblins are still back at the garrison.

“I told you I would get you out alive,” you say with a smirk as you lay Selenas back down onto her bed. She resists you slightly but lies down. “Rest, you are safe now,” you whisper. Nodding slightly Selenas settles onto the bed “If or when you are ready to talk I’ll be here to listen, but for now get some sleep.”

“Just promise me you’ll stay, don’t leave me alone,” Selenas begs as she clasps tight your hand. With a simple nod you seat yourself down beside Selenas while she drifts off to sleep. You watch the slow rise and fall of her chest as she lies there a look of peaceful bliss filling her blotchy red and tear streaked face.

Time slips past you as look upon her in a trance, a trance broken by the sound of clattering tankards, a table slamming the floor, and the shattering of glass, followed by a howl of laughter that could only come from Commissar Randolf.

Your own forces as in your new ward and possibly the Commissar. the Goblins were a part of the garrison.

You may write to the old garrison to request your troop of goblins, however there is no guarantee the new commander will send them and even if he does they will be a while in coming.

Shaking your head at the commotion, you resolve to stay with Selenas, she will be looking for you if she wakes. With your mind made up, you remove your armor and seat yourself at the end of Selenas’s bed, settling in for a long night. The crashes and yelling in the bar continue on for some time and at one point you hear a distinctly feminine voice shout “THAT’S IT, YOU’RE ON,” followed by a loud bang and a cheer.

Attempting to pull yourself away from the sounds you turn all of your attention to Selenas watching the slow rise and fall of her chest and the calm rhythmic sound of her breathing. Within moments, your eyelids grow heavy and despite your efforts close solidly as you drift off to sleep leaning against one of the walls.

You awaken in the next morning to sunlight streaming in through the window to your room and the sound of birds chirping outside. As you open your eyes and your senses return you find yourself in a predicament. Sometime during the night, Selenas had gotten up and was now sleeping with her head resting on your shoulder.

You decide to simply wait for Selenas to wake up, but as the time passes and the sun rises further into the sky you shrug your shoulder slightly and Selenas’s eyes open. She looks blearily around and realizing where she was, jumps back away from you “I’m sorry I didn’t… I mean…” Selenas stutters and struggles for words while you simply shrug and say “It’s okay, you were just making yourself comfortable.”

Selenas frowns at this and attempts further explanation but you cut her off “Don’t worry about it. How are you feeling?” She smiles slightly responding “Much better.”

“Good.” You say rising to your feet and starting don your armor again. “Do you want to talk about what happened?” Her features sobering Selenas shakes her head, it looks like she wouldn’t be ready for a while yet. “Well, let’s get you some breakfast,” you say as you finish strapping into your armor. “We’ve got a big day ahead of us.” Nodding her head Selenas stands and joins you as you descend the inn’s stairs to the bar.

On the way down you quickly give Selenas the gist of what happened after her interrogation and what your current mission was, but before you could finish the sight of the bar made you stop. All around tables and chairs were tipped over or smashed to splinters, some of them with their occupants still in them, empty bottles and tankards were scattered all over the place along with some of the other patrons. As you navigate your way through the carnage you find Randolf lying passed out in toward the center of the room surrounded by bottles and tankards. He was sleeping, mouth open wide, snoring loudly. It was then that the sound of clinking glass caught your attention and off in one corner of the room, you could see the innkeeper cleaning, the corner he was standing in an island of calm in this storm revelry.

Calling over to the innkeeper you ask “What the hell happened here?”

The innkeeper looks up at you with a haunted look, his eyes bloodshot and surrounded by dark circles. Pointing with a shaking hand at Randolf the innkeeper speaks “He happened. It started out fine, he just ordered a few drinks, but by the end of the night, he was challenging anyone and everyone to a drinking contest, a few challenged him but he won every time. That was when this tall fellow in black cloak came in and brought a scholar with him. That one there,” he said gesturing to the woman in mage college attire lying next to Randolf in the pile of tankards and bottles.

“The cloaked fella spoke with the drunk and left the girl in his care. The drunkard offered her a drink but she declined, but when he challenged her to a drinking contest she leapt right up and went at it. In a matter of moments she quickly caught up to him and the two were neck and neck. The both of them drank like fish and the other patrons were getting rowdy and restless, making bets on who would drop first. I don’t know how much those two drank but eventually that drunkard there finally dropped. The woman ordered another and drank it all before she went down as well. Then when it came time for the losers of the bets to pay up some of them wouldn’t and a fight started leading to all of this.” He said his voice getting shrill and exasperated as he waved his hands around gesturing to the entirety of the bar.

Returning sullenly to his work the Innkeeper began to mutter under his breath. From what you could hear it sounded like death threats.

>Wake Randolf and ask him his side of the story.

Turing your attention to Randolf, you decide it would be better if he slept off his night of drinking in your room than down here. Wading your way through the wreckage you come alongside Randolf and bend down to pick him up, but as you descend to do so his one of his eyes shoots open. The eye rolls around in the socket for a moment before snapping to you and focusing. A groaning loudly Randolf’s hands rake his face and eyes as he comes to. You prepare to say something but Randolf raises a finger to stop you and his other hand grabs an only half empty bottle off the floor and he begins to chug down the contents. You stand for a moment in near silence as Randolf drinks down the bottle in large gulps until its contents dry up then he tosses it away. Seemingly refreshed Randolf drops his finger and squinting up at you in slight pain croaks “Good morning Captain.”

Stone faced you simply say “Get up we are leaving.”

“So early?” he complains, but when you start for the door, Selenas following in your wake, he quickly scrambles to his feet and exclaims “Hey wait, don’t you want to meet your new mage!”

You stop dead in your tracks and turn to face him “What mage?”

“This one,” Randolf said as he kicked the feet of the woman lying next to him. The woman lets out a pained groan as if she were on the verge of tears. As she woke Randolf continued “Last night, the royal spymaster swung by with this girl here. He told me to tell you that she was a gift and to thank you for the distraction.”

Finally coming to her senses the mage scrambles around in a terrified panic whispering loudly, “My tome, my tome, where is my tome?” noticing that she was sitting one it she promptly rolls off of it and clutches the book tightly to her chest releasing a relived sigh as she does so.

Sighing, you turn to Selenas “Help her up.”

Obeying Selenas hurries over to the woman and helps her to rise on unsteady feet.

"My name is Baldr, this is Selenas, my ward, what's your name?"

“I’m, Mildri,” the woman manages to spit out. Then taking a deep breath she continues at measured pace as if she had practiced saying this a thousand times “I was sent to provide you support in your travels by the royal spymaster. I am quite proficient as a mage having graduated from the Laslac School of Magic and College of Mages. I am at your service Captain Baldr” She then exhaled grateful to be done speaking.

“And what magic is your specialty?” you inquire.

Flustered and not expecting you to ask another question Mildri stutters and stammers for a few moments before answering you. “I-I-I’m- I mean – Ice magic.” she finally spits out.

“Hm, well it is nice to meet you Mildri. I wish I could stand around all day talking but I’ve already wasted a whole day here and must be on my way, so if you are to join us find your feet quickly and keep pace.” And with that you turn and exit the bar.

First thing on your agenda was to say your farewells to Grimace and Monroe. You walk at a quick pace through the city toward the garrison barracks that being the most likely place for them to be. As you walk the rest of your retinue catches up to you having to jog to keep pace. Randolf having recovered surprisingly well was first to catch up with you with Selenas helping Mildri far behind.

“So, Captain where we going first?” Randolf inquires as he comes up alongside you.

“I’m going to visit a few friends and say my goodbyes,”

“You got all of us up and rushed out the door to say goodbye?”

Ignoring his comment you continue on into the garrison. At the door, the two guards salute you and you ask them to lead you to the barracks. After a few twist and turns through the garrison, you are lead to a large open room full of cots and chocked full of troops. At one of the tables in the room Monroe, Grimace, and a few other soldiers were sitting at a table rolling dice.

Upon hearing the door open and seeing you step in, several of the soldiers turn to look at you. Recognizing you one of them shouts “Hey Sergeant, look who finally decided to show up.”

Everyone at the table turns form the game to see you. Monroe pulls over an empty chair from a nearby table and pats a hand on the seat. “Sergeant Baldr, take a seat tell us how your audience with the Queen went.”

You walk over and stand leaning on the back of the chair Monroe provided. “Sorry gentlemen, but I don’t have much time so you’ll have to excuse me for not sitting.” You proceed to tell them gist of what happened during your meeting with the queen and the events afterward. As you tell your story, the rest of your companions wander in, Randolf simply takes a seat and begins to sip at his canteen. When Selenas entered, helping Mildri to get her bearings, Several of the soldiers give you dubious looks and you have to speed up your tale to cover her appearance alive and well.

Finishing your tale you conclude “I just came here to say farewell and that it was an honor to travel with you.” A semi silence holds the room while the barracks absorbs your words. Rising to his feet Monroe shakes your hand. “Likewise Captain Baldr, I think I can speak for all of us here in saying that we will miss you.”

Shouting from the back, one of Grimaces crossbowman blurts out “Yeah, now we won’t have anyone to scold unruly and whiney gods.” Small chuckles rumble out of all the soldiers in the barracks as Monroe goes on.

“I wish you luck Captain, it sounds like where you’re going, you’re gonna need it.”

“The same you Sergeant. Where are you guys going next?” you ask.

“From what I’ve heard we’ll be sent to the rebellion front. We’re probably being sent to help bulk up the army before the rebels begin their march again.”

“Well I wish you luck in finishing the rebels off and may your pockets overflow with loot,” you say as you give Monroe’s hand a firm shake. Then waving goodbye to the rest you return outside and plot your next move. As you contemplate this move however, you finally notice that why some of the soliders couldn’t take their eyes off of Selenas. She was still in her rough spun prisoner sackcloth and admittedly Selenas seemed to be uncomfortable just standing there.

“We should get you some clothes,” say to her.

“No, you shouldn’t have to spend money on my account I will be fine,” she says somewhat confidently, but her eyes betray her words.

“I have some spare clothes among my possessions she can borrow mine if she likes.” Mildri quietly offers, her eyes shying away from you. “There at the stable with the rest of our things.

A weapon and armor aside from clothes to Selena's so she can pull her weight in a fight

yeah we did but this is kind of important, potions to heal and finding a good weapon can be easier to find here at the capital

not to mention if we don't equip her she is dead weight in a fight and on the road

Making your purchases you find that you are one gold short, but when the armorer see’s the state of Selenas’s dress he takes pity and gives you a reduced price on the armor. Gathering your possessions you head out to the stables and prepare to leave. Selenas dresses herself in the light armor, thick leather pads and cover her arms legs and chest providing a small amount of protection while you and the rest of your companions strap your possessions to the pack horses. As you mount your horse, you can clearly see who has ridden a horse before. Randolf swings up easily into the saddle and sits comfortably in the saddle. Selenas as well mounts her horse with ease, but with less fluidity than Randolf. Mildri seemed to know little of how to ride a horse and it took the help of a stable hand to help her into the saddle, the whole process would have gone much easier if she had stopped clenching that damn book to her chest. Much like Mildri you have trouble mounting your horse, life as a farmer left you lacking in how to ride. Eventually though you manage to mount your shying horse and lead your companions out of the stable and through the city gates out into the late morning light.

Your party travels in silence through most of the day as both you and Mildri struggle to keep seated. Finally as the sun begins to set your party stops and sets up camp. Sitting around the campfire you try to stretch the muscles in your stiffen and sore legs, while Selenas stokes your camps fire. Randolf opens up one of his horse’s saddle bags to reveal bottle after bottle of liquor, he takes one and begins to refill his canteen. Across from you Mildri busies herself with her tomb reading from it mumbling under her breath.

Coming up behind Randolf you look over his shoulder and take a closer look at his liquor. It was a purple color and as he poured it into his canteen you could smell it. The scent was indescribable flowing between a heady wine, a dark hoppy beer, and the stinging smells of the alcohols used by healers.

Finished filling his canteen, Randolf swigs down some of the bottle and is about to return it to the saddlebag when he notices you standing behind him. “Captain,” he says turning to face you. “Come to keep an eye on your commissar, or did you come to have a taste.” He says offering you the bottle in his hand. “Go on, try some,”

> 5 Successes

The liquor tastes pretty strange to your tongue, almost like water but tingly. You chug the rest of the bottle trying to taste what exactly was so strong about it. As you drink Randolf’s eyes grow wide and his mouth drops open, watching you from across the came Mildri blanches with the memory of her drinking contest with Randolf. Finishing off the bottle you place the empty container back into Randolf’s hand which fails to clench the bottle and it falls to the ground.

“Well that wasn’t what I was expecting; I thought you had the good stuff Commissar. What was this water?”

The Randolf’s mouth opens and shuts trying to speak. Shaking himself he finally manages to speak “That was my best stuff, my own personal brew” he says as if in a daze.

“I think that it could use some improvement, keep working though, I’m sure you’ll get something drinkable, eventually.” Patting him on the shoulder you return to the campfire. Randolf doesn’t even react he just stares at his shaking hands.

“How was it,” Selenas asked having not just witnessed your feat. “Can I have some?”

“It was nothing special; I suggest you wait until he gets the mixture right.” You say punctuating your statement with a loud belch. “Besides do you think you’re even old enough to drink?”

Giving you a pouting look she answers “Of course I am, I’m sixteen and technically an adult she says with some pride.”

“An adult, oh Selenas I can see you have much to learn.” You say dismissively and rise to your feet taking the first watch.

>Because of your amazing rolls you have now gained the Iron Gullet perk. It will now take a copious amount of alcohol to get you even tipsy, a blessing and a curse; however spoiled foods and poisons now have a hard time making you sick +3 to resist the effects of poison.

The following morning as you set off you are faced with a choice of which route to take. There were two options, one route would take you through the regions many hills and mountains over rough terrain, and while it was the shorter distance route, if you take a wrong turn or lose your way it could take a long time to get through. The other route would have you taking the longer route around the rough region, but it would give you a safer and more predictable route

You were a gambling man and willing to take your chances with the rougher yet shorter route. Following the forking road east you head out toward your destination. A couple more days pass as before the landscape begins to change. The once flat endless sea of grasses started to roll up into more and more hills, soon the land started to become sparser rolling hills grew taller and jagged. The land became hard packed and stony making your horses footing suspect. Soon you find the hills to tall and shear to navigate forcing you to navigate the many foot trails winding through the area.

>I’m going to need another set of d20s to see how well you navigate the terrain.

Traveling along twisted and often gravel strewn pathways is a slow business several times you are nearly thrown from your horse when it slipped on some loose ground. Eventually the narrowing paths force all of you on to your feet.

All of this caused the hair to rise on the back of your neck to rise. You see no fewer than three easy ambush points on the passes and trails you pass through leaving you tense and jumpy most of the day. When you finally make it to a wider potion of the trail you stop for the day and set up a compact camp. Sitting around the campfire you can see that your companions are just as tired as you are. You are about to order them to rest when a sound catches your ear. A soft clacking noise that was growing haltingly louder, until a shard of rock plunked off of your pauldron and onto the ground but the sound clattering sound doesn’t go away in fact it was getting louder staring into the darkness you search for the source of the sound.

You search through the darkness but can’t see a blasted thing even with your helmet’s zoom. The rumbling only gets louder as you look. Your companions begin to look around in bewilderment as they too have picked up the sound and the pack horses are whinnying and stomping their hooves. Finally there at the extent of your vision, you see something up the mountain were those rocks. It suddenly dawns on you what is coming the roar of the rockslide is deafening and impact mere moments away you only have time to shout “RUN!” before the first of the large rocks crash down onto your camp.

> Mildri: 3 Successes | Selenas: 3 Successes | Randolf: 1 Success

Your companions seem to be more on the ball than you are. Selenas reacts immediately snatching up her reigns and those of your horse leading them quickly away. Mildri does much the same with her horse and Randolf’s horse. Randolf and you are slower on the draw and are nearly crushed by falling rocks that bury your campfire and tents. Had it not been for your other companions quick reactions, you wouldn’t have anything left.

Once everyone’s hearts had slowed and you could catch your breath Randolf walked over to his horse and immediately checked his booze supply, finding it intact he let out a joyous yell and danced over to Mildri “You saved my booze,” he said joyful tears forming in his eyes “I don’t know how to thank you.” Then he simply kissed Mildri and danced a way laughing maniacally. Mildri just stands there stunned for a few moments before, her face turning beat red turned away from you and quickly buried her face in her book.

“Thank you,” You say to Selenas as you take your horses reigns from her.

“Don’t mention it, I’m sure you would have done the same for me,” she responds plainly. “Well it looks like we won’t be going that way.”

She was right; the rockslide had covered the path ahead of you in thousands of loose stones that looked like they could give way again any moment. With the night just having fall going anywhere in the dark could be dangerous, if not lethal, but it wasn’t entirely safe to remain under a mountain that could slide more rocks on your head at any moment.

>You’ll take your chances with another rockslide wandering around steep trails in the dark is a great way to die.

Speaking to the whole group you say “We’re going to back track until we can find another area to rest.” Nodding their approval everyone sets out back the way you came. “Who has the torches?” you ask before anyone traveled too far.

“I’ve got it,” Mildri’s small voice calls and moments later a ball of white light flared to life. Blinded it takes a few moments before you can make out Mildri’s form again. “Sorry, I should have given you a warning, it is rather bright,” Mildri apologizes while the ball of light rises into the air above all of you illuminating the surrounding terrain.

With the darkness cast away back tracking became easy. You were relaxing some when behind you Selenas says “Baldr, was that here when we went by the first time.” Following her pointing finger you see and oddity in the rock. As you come closer to it, Mildri gasps “That’s a dwarven sanctuary door.” Quickly rushing past you Mildri runs her hands over an ornate carving in the rock face.

“What the hell is that,”Randolf asks coming forward to examine the carving as well.

“Well their like little dwarf escape tunnels or safe houses, the door will only open to those who know the password. Now if I can just find my dwarven rune translation book.” Mildri trails off as she looks through her bags.

Leaning over to whisper Randolf says “Captain, I don’t know about you but I’m a little too tired to go traipsing around a dwarven anything, I say we should keep going and find a place to camp, the runes will still be here in the morning.”

“Here inside is probably safer than anywhere out here for a rest, and besides Mildri saved your booze, let her examine the runes.”

“Alright, Captain you made your point. We’re staying here.” He said agitatedly.

Setting up a small camp you wait for Mildri to finish her examination of the runes. An hour passes and both Selenas and Randolf are nodding off leaning against their packs when Mildri comes up behind you and taps your shoulder. Her excitement from before was replaced by confusion as she explains what she had learned.

“You see Captain all of these dwarven sanctuary doors are locked by a password and often the clue to that password is written in runes around the door. Had the solution been a simple riddle I could have solved it but this, I don’t know if any of us could solve it. The clue goes like this ‘What is Uncle Gluntru’s favorite ale’ does it mean anything to you?”

It didn’t mean anything in particular to you but maybe if…

You walk quickly over to Randolf and shake him awake. His fist nearly slams into your helmet as he takes a swing at you but stops as soon as he realizes who it is. “Captain, what the hell do you want now?”

“I’ve got a job for you, c’mon,” you say quickly hauling the sleepy commissar with you. “Alright Mildri repeat the question.” She does so.

“Is that supposed to mean something to me? I don’t know who this Gluntru is or what his favorite ale could possibly be but I guess I could just list off the dwarven ales I know. Let’s see there’s Leakstone Ale, Brok’s Skull Ale.” Randolf goes on listing at least 10 or so ales before “Cold Taproot and…” as he says the words there is a sudden pop and the runes on the door glow brightly before a section of the rock next to the runes backs, up and away from the mountain side revealing a dark hole.

Mildri brings her light lower so that it shines into the hole. The light cast down a hallway hewn into the mountain that travels a great distance before winding downward.

“Captain, I’ll say it again; I’d rather not go down some dwarven hole without a good night’s rest.” Randolf says as you and Mildri start inching forward into the hallway.
