The quiet rumble of the engines fill the small, cramped, cabin. Your eyes blink open as you stare, squinting, at the harsh bluish-white lights above you as your eyes adjust to the light. You're lying with your feet propped up on the pilot's chair and with your head and shoulders resting against the door marked 'exit' in big neon yellow tape. Though 'door' is kind of an exaggeration as it's about half the size of any door you know and it's more of a hatch than anything else. You sigh and push down on your baseball cap to cover your eyes.

Feeling the well-worn ridge of the cap’s bill, you flick it up and past your eyes again and stare at the box that's resting on your bed, the reason you're laying on the floor. Breathing deeply you push yourself up and fold your legs; pressing your knees against your chest. Even hunched over your head barely touches against the ceiling of the cabin. You breathe and pull the box off the bed; with a thud it settles on the floor. Staring down at it, hesitant and nostalgic, you read the black words roughly written in black marker on its cardboard top. 'Home.'

You open it slowly and, remembering all of what you had put in it, finger through the books and other random mementos until you land on a single picture. It's of you and your mom. It's of your graduation from trade school -- one of the worst days of your life. You were sixteen, your hair was a mess, it was one of the hottest summer days for the ceremony, and the girl you’ve been dating for the last four years of your life just broke up with you. Your dad didn't even show up but your mom was so proud of you so you still kept smiling. Always gleaming that entire day, you feared if you broke out in tears your mom would too and neither of you would stop crying, you feared you'd never get home because both of you would have teared up eyes the entire time and couldn't see while flying.

As you set down the picture you saw your trade school certificate. You always thought that system was dumb. An entire system focused around puting kids straight into the workplace. No room for error or experimentation. Just right into the studies and then getting booted onto the street. What you had paid attention to got you by with sticking to average grades and ratings until the very end of it. From age four to ten being independent studies, ten to fourteen being common studies, and finally fourteen to sixteen being trade school studies -- you hated all of it. You had always thought fourteen was way too young to choose a decision that would impact your entire life and your lifelong career. Picking up the leather bound certificate, you read the bold text at the top of it.

>Cyber Security and Infrastructure. You loved your Omnium net computer. You spent hours, day and night, sitting and learning about these things. You always wanted to make a cool net game about a talking dragon.
>Zoology.. or Finance? Maybe something in art? You don't remember. You chose it because it was easy, besides who even uses that useless shit they teach you?

Welcome to For Hire.

Thank you for coming, to read and I hope you enjoy it enough to stick around.
The rules are simple but I’ll still explain them. Majority votes win and if you need to roll, I will state it. The dice system will later be explained once we get to a position when it is necessary to do so. If anyone has any questions OOC, visit my discord, tweet me, or ask them after the current session.

Engineering has 3 votes, seems like that's going to be the choice for today, although it's really close to both Police investigation & Political Sciences with just one vote behind. I'll make an exception and have the MC be pretty interested in both the topics while getting his 'degree' in Engineering. Can't really get a solid job based off of that but he'll still have some of the bonuses regardless.

Engineering, the bold letters typed out in some fancy script make it slightly harder to read as you hold it up against the light. Under it is your name, Samuel J. Ward. Your father named you that but he would always called you Sam. This ship was actually a gift from your father, one of the reasons why he wasn’t there at graduation, he was picking up the licensure and documents for it, since it was a pet project of yours with the two of you always messing with it whenever he was home and wasn’t off to one of the trading stations orbiting Haven. Even with him being gone most of the time you still managed to get the entire thing flyable, somehow. One of the reasons to your decision for pursuing the engineering certificate. Though --

A dull red blinking light at the pilot’s console draws your attention away from your nostalgic stupor. Three words blink back at you as you push away the box and near the console -- “Entering System: Milo.”

“Finally” you say to noone. You’ve been in transit for the past week with you barely being able to stretch your legs or let alone walk. This ship is way too cramped with all these boxes, not to mention its main selling point was that it was small and compact. Looking outside, you see the red orb of fire sitting against the backdrop of near infinite void. Milo System, a small station with an even smaller population. No idea why Arcady wanted to see you here, they have offices in New Arizona plus they’re closer to Haven and Arcady itself. No telling why they chose Milo.

Three blips pop up across your screen as you enter the system. Milo and the two rocky planets that orbit the system’s star appear as does your flight path. Beside the flight path glows green letters, “ETA 1 Hour”. From what you recall, the meeting with Arcady’s officials doesn’t start until the next day, fourteen hours or so. Something your dad’s friend was able to hook you up with. Inherited positions are pretty hard to come by even more so in a management position like his. All you know is that it’s a lot of paperwork, even though you don’t hate paperwork you still dread the idea of waking up everyday to just file papers. Seems it’ll get boring quickly.

You back away from looking over the barely cushioned pilot’s seat and cross your legs to look around you.

>Might as well take a shower, would be nice to go walk around for once.
>Back to looking at your boxes, your dad packed a bunch of extra stuff in the storage cabinets and you’ve been wanting to look into what all he gave you.
>You’re back in a system now, might as well check the net to look over anything you’ve missed out on in the past week, playing video games and watching old movies all week got boring fast.
>Might as well go back to taking a nap now that you know you’re in system. The computer and the station hands can do the docking for you while you get some shuteye.

You take a moment as you stretch your back before you turn around to face the sitting desk and slide under the faux wooden table. Pushing off the foil of packaged meals and other trash you’ve forgotten about, you pull out the screen that sits inside the wall. Sliding it up to be at a comfortable place to match your eye level, you push open another compartment to release the keyboard and cursor.

The screen slowly boots up and displays the operating system, one of the older, and cheaper, models of Haney Computer Manufacturing. You thought it was good enough for most of the things you’d be running on it since it’s not the most difficult thing to run but it’s definitely not Omnium tech which you’ve only really heard about with your home being in the north-west periphery and all.

The blue-tinted screen displays several red notifications as it opens up onto your dashboard. You first open up your mail, some of them are just farewell messages from friends who were only second-gen or staying on planet with their parents. You keep scrolling down before you notice the Arcady email notification reminder about the meeting today. “Arcady Pharmaceuticals would like to congratulate on the Secured Position you…”

All the same stuff you had already known, though this was sent right before you had left for Milo, it still showed up as a new message. You keep scrolling down. Some more messages from friends you hadn’t realized you had, though they might just be mass emailing all of the people they knew who were leaving. You get off of the messages and search for a few of your news journals you had subscribed to. Gues Network Journal, The Star Program, Interstellar Net News.. though they seemed all interesting you did notice that there’s a new episode of one of your favorite shows. “Bloodhounds” a noir series about a detective who goes about solving crimes, one of the biggest twists in the series was at the beginning of season four when an occultist started to move into the city the main character was in.

“Been away for just a week and it feels like I missed out on a month..” you again talk to yourself as you stare at the screen.

>Time to delve into the news. See how much you had really missed in the past week, when you left you knew that there was a group in Unity-Point that seemed to have started to mess around again.
>Read the emails, seeing messages from your old friends would probably be fun at least plus you might have missed something else important.
>Bloodhounds, obviously. It’s only like forty-five minutes and it’s not like you’re needed for anything.
>Ahh.. Well it might be best to get ready, or do something else. [write-in]

Clicking onto the dashboard, you move back to the news journals. Grouping them together, you function input them into your news feed so you can see the local news instead of a stream of some less than relevant articles.

Sifting through the list, you find some of the articles that were immediately relevant to what you wanted to know -- crime. Most of it seemed to be small-time articles with arrests and court dates set amongst them. Something which caught your eye was a relatively small article from a less than respectable journal, “The LodeStar Reporter”. Some journalist’s blog about crime, but this one seemed to pique your interest. “The CITF are on the Move; will they break concords with Unity-Point to enforce their searches or have they already?” is the long-winded headline that they went with, though admittedly they caught your eye. CITF, counter insurgency task-force, this close seemed too off to not notice. If the CITF is here then there must be something serious going down in Unity-Point even if it’s just one of those memorial ship graveyards which are neutral territory.

CITF are a pretty big deal and would probably do something like this but the article doesn’t go much deeper than hearsay or rumor-level journalism. Seems the author is just grasping at straws if you’re being honest. You click off of the article and push past it to see some of the others. “Man found dead in Leo, Arcady Denies involvement,” “INTERSTELLAR DISCOURSE: House Tsaiojin Conflict Heats Up,” “Milo Newsletter: Ship Stolen, information needed,” and others fill your screen.

You remember a couple years back that some imp system got sacked by another of theirs, though you barely recall whatever happened since the Royal Houses aren’t much for news coverage in the first place. You open up the first one.

“Man found dead inside his apartment, the local police report this to be a homicide as there was signs of struggle though those around him seemed to be under the idea that it was a suicide. The Leo enforcement chief claims that if there was any issues to be found then it will be discovered under his watch as he works with Arcady officials to produce results. The name of the deceased man has not yet been released as the police office claims that this is still an ongoing investigation. This has been the third time in the last two months that a member of Arcady Pharmaceuticals have gone missing or have been found dead and many of their critics, including the head CEO of Wynter Healthcare Jackson Wall who states that this is obviously the ill work of Arcady officials...

As you read through the article you remember that Adam, the family friend, worked at the Leo Arcady Research Station. Something you’ll probably have to ask about with him once you see him in about two weeks since he said he’ll come to Leo and help you settle in. You still don’t know why he would leave his secured position to you even if he didn’t have kids of his own he could have just chose your older brother where ever he is.

You sigh and lean back, resting halfway onto the edge of your bed.

>Tsaiojin was a pretty old instance, wonder why it’s still in the news.

Tsaiojin is pretty old news, about three years past since then, about the same time you graduated trade school. The system got smashed by some other house that didn’t agree with them or something along those lines -- you didn’t notice at the time.

You stretch your arms as you reach for one of unopened cans of cal, one of those morning drinks you used to scarf down every now and then to keep you awake. You guess that the system probably has a good stock of them in the stores, they’re pretty cheap too. You take a sip before narrowing your eyes back onto the article. It seems the conflict has sparked a bit of a discourse between members of their government. Something something something… it’s mostly about how the neighboring Houses of the imperialists have closed trade for an unknown about of time until internal affairs begins to smooth things over. Seems to be getting pretty bad from what you can tell, though it doesn’t seem to be a full out civil war, not yet at least.

You take another sip and think a bit on what you remember about Tsaiojin. They used to own one of the border systems, Otsu Hoshi, near Montaway before they were destroyed for whatever reason. Something about resources is all you can remember, though you did see that there was a rumor recently about the heiress not being found amongst the dead as well as that it was a ronin that did the slaughtering.

You take a deep breath as you set down your can of cal. Odd that it’s only now that you’re hearing about it again. Could it be something worse than what they thought it was? Couldn’t be, since it’s only now being reported on again. Maybe that “LodeStar Reporter” said something about it, they seem to be around the area at least. Maybe it’s just because the imps rarely let out information and the stuff they do let out is all pampered to be better than what it actually is, or so they say.

Looking at the clock, 18:48, you notice just how much time has passed since the flight path said you’d arrive around 19:12.

Leaning back again, you look up at the cabinets and the storage locker to your right, opposite of the shower you’ve been meaning to take. Closing the computer, you uncross your legs and slide over the metal flooring to open the first cabinet which contained most of your food items. Enough to last about another week, though it’s not a whole lot of variety. Most of it is the nutrition bars which are cheap and taste cheap while the other is mainly drinks and cyro-meats.

You close it and move to the next cabinet. This was one of the ones you had personally stocked with extra coolant supplies and oxygen, along with the tools to replace the parts. Since most of the ship is compact, you could easily just open up one of the metal plates around your headspace or under your legs to access the majority of the systems, barring the engines themselves and some of the trickier parts of the Missive Drive which was a pain to install. You close it and move to the storage locker, the one your dad packed full of whatever he wanted.

As you open it, you can see an orange-grey suit with a large brown coat hung over its shoulders. An EVA suit, large black-glass visor and all, one of the older variants you’ve seen even on Haven -- your dad’s old suit. You remember him buying a new one recently and thank him mentally before taking it out to move it out of your way. Behind it is a layer of several metal crates, produce from what you could guess with the cryogenic markings labeling their exterior. You sit at the edge of the storage locker and look down a bit as it extends into the floor, allowing you to stretch your legs down into it.

Taking a look over some more clothes that your dad set you up with, you notice a clean looking business suit and an older looking set of enviro-suits that you wear under the EVA suit. You take off your red baseball cap and place it on one of the rungs inside the locker before placing your new, new to you, EVA suit back and close the locker door.

You stretch your back as your turn around to face the shower room. It’s the same as the locker as it goes deeper into the floor and allows for you to stand, if only a little bit. The dimensions are a bit off but you shake the random thoughts out of your head before stripping down and opening the shower door to slide into it. You close the toilet and wait for it to sit flush with the wall before turning the water on.

(1/?)
>>
>>2781110
Cold, again. Freezing cold. You freeze up a bit before the water heats up slowly to at least a bearable temperature as you slowly begin to wash yourself. A pretty smart way to have a shower in a ship that’s small as this one. Only around 40,000 kilograms and is basically just as small as some of the military fighters, though it’s way less armored and far less maneuverable it still manages to provide all the necessities like running water, a bed, and some storage. The shower itself is about your height and almost just barely your shoulder width and is a bit of a pain to properly wash yourself, but still it’s a shower. The sink and toilet are also in the same space with the toilet and sink being able to fold into the walls and the mirror being in front of you. Though, there is a mirror which sits on the ceiling of the “hallway”.

Suddenly, you feel the thrusters shift and move slightly. You must be arriving at the station orbiting Milo. Seems your computer was able to transfer all the information the station needed to dock you up, and since the ship’s so small it’s not going to be much of a cost. You can hear the ship’s hull sigh as you begin to lather up your hair and then you hear the ship’s landing gears start to rotate outwards as you finish washing off some of the remaining soapy residue from your skin.

Turning the water off, you feel the ship finally touching down onto the station before you start to crawl out of the shower. Taking a final look at yourself as you finish getting dressed, you take a look over at your pilot’s console. Seems you’re inside the station, one of the airlocked portions, probably why it took so long to get the ship inside but at last you’re at the station you needed to be at.

You turn back to the hatch and you put in the door’s locking code and then push it open with very little force. As you open it, you’re greeted with a smell of cooked food, oil, and a bit of sweat. Taking the first step outside of your ship for the first time in a week feels like ecstasy as you hold onto the door’s railing to stretch your back out properly, letting our some fairly loud cracks and pops from your back. Before you’re able to get too afraid of how loud the sounds coming from your back are getting, you notice a loud argument between two people somewhat near your ship.

The two stand just outside of a significantly larger ship, a smaller civilian freighter. You’re not too sure what they’re arguing about but but it does sound a bit heated but before you could focus on eavesdropping in on their conversation, you notice something that strikes you at as odd. One of the people is a somewhat short girl with pink hair. You’ve never really seen anyone with pink hair, most of the people you’ve known had blond or brown hair. You shake your head before closing the hatch behind you and making your way to the hangar’s exit. Might as well start walking around, there’s a map here anyways.

You look over the map as you download it onto your mobile display.

>There’s a market here, might as well stop by and check things out. You do have some produce you could sell but there’s also plenty of things to browse. You have about 350▲.

As you finish looking at your mobile display and place it into your side pocket of your coat, you hear the sudden storming of feet and a flurry of pink hair pass you through the door. You see her carrying several bags of luggage as she passes and turns left to somewhere deeper into the station angrily. You shake your head as you check a sign as you make sure you’re heading toward the market, you’ve never been with your dad whenever he went to the market to sell any of his goods but he had always talked a lot about the market whenever you asked. He would mostly tell you some stories that he had heard from the traders that came from out of system since those were always the most interesting things from the market, but he would sometimes talk about new ship parts or new mechanics and would bring back some manuel-disks on engineering.

The most interesting thing he would talk about was the cybernetics some of the traders had. Pretty uncommon planet-side but on station traders would usually sport cybernetic gear but you hadn’t seen any except in some of the stuff your dad would bring back or on the net. You think to yourself as you pass several of the stalls and some of the rooms for shops before finding a shop with a big green neon sign that spelled out cybernetics on a large metal and otherwise spartan door.

You press against the unlock button to the side of the frame and watch as it reveals a surprisingly disturbing picture of several cybernetic prosthetic limbs hanging from fixtures on the walls with a somewhat gruff man tending to a customer. You place yourself behind the girl, waiting, as you look around the shop. You eye some of the names of the prosthetics, BioTyk Inc, Wynter Healthcare, and some that seem to be made locally.

As you wait and stand behind the girl, you notice her hair is snow white and she’s wearing a large coat, at least a coat several times larger than something you’d expect her to wear. Watching the two talk, you notice the legs sticking out of her coat at the bottom, both cybernetic and probably the reason why she was here. From what you can tell from half listening in on their conversation, she’s asking about some of his BioTyk stock as well as how much of something she called “Zaxaminiphul,” though you’ve never heard of it. You watch as the two finish talking and she turns to face you, her face somewhat flinches as she almost didn’t expect you to be there before half smiling and letting out an unconvincing “Sorry.”

“Take care, if you need anything else come back,” he finishes before turning to face you. “Hello, my name is Doug and welcome to my shop. What can I help you with?”

“We don’t carry Zaxaminiphul, shit doesn’t get freighted here often. If you’re looking for it you’ll probably have to go down to Iota Persei which is about a month’s trip with three stops whichever way you fly,” the man working behind the counter says before taking a deep breath from his cigar. “Anything else is fine, though we don’t carry any imp tech if that’s what you’re after.”

“Ahh, no, I was just looking for-”

“You’re not one of those guys?” he says as he leans over the counter a bit, eyeing you up. “You’re not part of the sons, his sons, their sons, or whatever they’re calling themselves now? I don’t deal with their kind.”

“Who? W-what?” you say taken aback slightly.

“Where are you from, kid?”

“Haven.”

“Haven? You’re a penal-colonist then? Third gens don’t usually leave planetside, you got business at Milo?” He says as he pushes the remaining nub of the cigar into an ashtray.

“Yeah, penal-colonist and I don’t think I really have to tell you why I’m here.”

“No you don’t,” he sighs as he dusts off his apron. “Guess you’re not one of them then, hair does give it away though. What all can I help you with then?”

“Well, I..” you take a minute to process everything as you look about the shop again. “I wanted to know more about cybernetics.”

“Yeah that’s right, you colonists don’t really see much of this stuff. Well most of my stock comes from Biotyk, not that that matters much since most shops around these parts carry Biotyk stock. Anyways, most kit you can buy are prosthetics, like arms or eyes, but you can also get monitors. Most cybernetics require other items to get them functioning as well as a little maintenance. I’d recommend the Wynter Healthcare brand, less time spent on fixing them, last longer too. You’d have to start out with a dock first so it doesn’t fry your brain. Rates start at around 450 and there’s a few Wynter docks I have in the back but they cost extra, around 25 bays for 2,500.”

>Zaxaminiphul, what does that even mean?
>”What did you mean “the sons” ?” The name sounds familiar but you don’t really know where it’s from and what’s wrong with your hair?

“Ah, thanks.. Ah. you asked me if I was a part of “the sons” or whatever. Who are they? They kind of sound familiar but..”

“They’re terrorists and if you’re smart you’d keep away from them. Been in the news recently, they stole a ship from here. I saw told the reporter that I saw them but they didn’t believe me.”

“And.. what did you mean my hair gave it away and what do you mean their terrorists?”

“You’re blond, their blond. That’s their M.O. same with bombing. They don’t like much of anyone else either, would of bombed the senate if they could, bombed that splicer research center off Leo. Probably the guys behind those deaths too, though Arcady seems to be doing just fine killing off their own. Read in the Lodestar Reporter, you read them?, anyways read that there was a murder in Leo and it says that there are Arcady officials trying to cover up something out there.”

“I think I heard something about that, the Leo murder,” Lodestar Reporter is about the least reputable news outlet there is..

“Yeah nasty business that, even if Arcady helped build this station, shady officials I say.”

“Ah well thanks for the info, don’t really have the cash at hand right now though so I’m probably going to head out,” you say before you turn and head for the door.

“No problem. Take care, if you need anything else come back,” his words follow you as you open the metal door and leave. “The Sons” huh? Sounds like bad news even more so since they’re in system. As you take out your mobile display to check the time, you hear footsteps and a voice.

“Sorry,” the same voice from inside the store earlier. That white haired girl from before. What does she want, you think as you watch her form a quiet smile.

“What for?”

“Samuel Ward, age 19, Engineer. Right? You’re here to buy cybernetics, right? You have a ship here, PD Lakka, class Paxos. I’m going to need it,” her voice dulled and monotonous.

“No..” you back up slightly, pressing yourself against the wall. Who the hell is this? What does she want and why am I still here? Thinking quickly, you parse out what she’s asking. She probably already knows who you are but you decide to try to throw her off with a fake name. “No, uh.. My name is Ed- Edward Shi-Shru-Shlord.. I’m seventeen and I’m astrophysics and I don’t have a ship.”

“Samuel,” her hand reaches out and clasps your shoulder harder than you would imagine her to be capable of. “Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not lying.. I’m just..” You look away from her face and then point over to a corner, “There’s Sam!”

“What?” her grasp on your shoulder lessens as she turns to face whatever you were pointing at. As she turns, you take this moment to push her arm away from you and sprint down the opposite direction. Though you fooled her, she calls out to you, “There is no secured positi..”

Her voice fades out as as you continue past the stalls where you slip into the small crowd. Who the hell was that, and what was she trying to say as you ran from her? Something about a secured.. Secured position? You catch your breath as you find the exit and open up your mobile display. Probably would be best to leave the market.

Opening the map, you quickly put in the directions to the pub. It’s on the opposite side of the station so it should be enough distance between you and whoever that was. You breathe deeply as you place the display back into your coat pocket, exhaling mists and fogs as if it was snowing.

Taking up a somewhat quicker pace than you arrived with, you make your way through the station with the help of the map. Most of the station seems to be more utility, storage, and factory work for Arcady than much of anything else, though there isn’t even a proper research station in Milo.Industrial sounds fill the air as you pass by several of the larger and more open portions of the station.

As you near the pub, you start to smell cooked food and the distinct smell of smoke and alcohol. Your stomach makes its discomfort known as you find the door to the pub. Beside the door is a small standing sign that reads.

Serving cold and hot cal 24/7. 3▲

You look over the sign before going inside, the pub itself seems to be somewhat empty than what you’d expect but still there’s a few more customers than you’ve seen anywhere else. A man standing behind the counter calls out to you. “Welcome, come sit down, what would you like to drink?”

“A cold cup of cal, please.” You say as you approach the bar and look around. There’s a group sitting in front of a table with what looks like a computer of some sort set up on it. “Your cal. That would be three standards, pay here.”

You pass your mobile display over a scanner that he produced before grabbing your taller than expected drink. “Thanks,” Looking over the room you spot a few booths empty and find your way over to them and sit facing the way you came in at. “Who was that?” you think as you start to take a sip from the oddly shaped, cone-like, glass.

You take out your display and turn it on. Looking through the cameras mounted near the hatch and inside the ship, “Whoever it was, they didn’t go searching for me at the ship. I wonder how they knew my name. It’s not like I’m well known or anything.. What if it’s one of those people that shop owner was talking about, “The Sons” or whatever.”

Your brow furrows as you watch the door and the screen. “Either way, best to keep a distance from her.

A voice rips you away from your thoughts as a large shadow approaches your booth, blocking your view of the door. “Hey there!”

“The name’s Darius.” His voice booms over your thoughts as the significantly taller man sits in your booth. He stretches out a wide, gloved, palm over the table.

>”What now? I don’t know what you guys want but I’m telling you I don’t know anything.” He’s probably with that white haired lady. Should get out of this place as soon as you can.
>”Hey… ? Can I help you with something?” Another stranger, great. Wonder what he wants.
>”Hey there. I’m Sam, wha.. What can I help you with?” Might as well hear this guy out, he doesn’t seem that dangerous. Then again he’s taller, bigger, and meaner looking than that white haired lady.

“How can you tell?”

“The hair, usually a dead giveaway for those colonists.”

“Ah..”

“First time outside of Haven?”

“Yeah, third gen,” you eye him and the door as you take another sip. What does this guy want?

“Don’t talk much do you?”

“Ah.. yeah..” you pause for a second, tapping your shoe, “Gunna tell me what you’re after?”

“Straight to the punch, eh? I’m looking for some extra hands for my crew. Have a job lined up that is said to need a bit more than what I have. We’re set up near the front of the pub,” he thumbs behind him and you tilt and lean out of the booth to see the table that was set up. “Just need to fill up the last of the berths, about three more beds left. If you’re willing to join up, I can set you with a pretty decent pay for your troubles.”

“Oh?” you say somewhat blanky as you turn to focus on him more than the door. You look back to your open display and glance at the time, 22:34, you have the Arcady appointment in ten hours. “A job?”

“Yeah, simple stuff. Just a trip to Unity-Point and we’ll be back here. Got room to dock a ship if you have one.” You’re probably just being paranoid, he’s probably not working with the white haired lady. “The job itself is a bit odd. Can’t really say much about it, not unless you sign.”

“Ah.. You said your name was Darius, right? Who- What do you do?”

“I’m the captain, or well, I own the ship. Got her for a steal,” he says as he leans back in the couchoned seat. “Kenji and I got her. Kenji’s the pilot, known him for around five years now -- good guy.”

“So how much were you going to pay for and can you at least tell me what I’d be doing if I did sign?” you say, though you’re not sure where to take this since you’re mainly just buying time.

“Pay would be around two thousand standards for the job itself, we’ll provide food, water, and a bed,” he pauses as he opens up his own display. “If you sign, you’d be working in cargo. Moving and putting it where it’s supposed to be. You’d be working under Hazel, our inventory manager, and probably Isaac or Lewis since Seth isn’t much for helping new guys.”

You half listen to him as he explains, noticing the pink haired girl slouched over her booth table a few tables down. Darious notices and leans in a bit, startling you. “Someone you know?”

“Oh.. uh, no. I saw her when I arrived. She was getting into an argument with someone in the hangar. Been a few hours since then though.”

“Someone you want to know then?” You look back to him and he’s giving a half toothy smile as your face twists a bit. “Oh, don’t be like that, colony boy. So what do you say? Take the job and sign?”

[What do you say to him?]
>”Thanks but I have a job, I’m about to go to the appointment in a few hours.”
>”Not sure yet, I’ll get back with you later.”

“How long until you leave for the job? I might need some time to think on it, not sure yet.”

“All I can give you is until around this time tomorrow. That should be enough, yeah?” He says as he starts to stand up from the booth. “The job is good pay and the work wouldn’t be too hard. Think on it, you’ll probably like it.”

With that he leaves and returns to his group at his table. You watch them for a second as you finish your cup. Seems fine enough, though I already have a job. Arcady. You sit for a few more seconds before turning back to that girl with pink hair. You hadn’t noticed her earlier when you first walked in and she still has all her luggage with her.

Standing, you make the decision to go talk to her. Why not. You haven’t really talked to a girl since graduation and that didn’t go too well. Even before then you really only talked to Sara. You can’t help but feel nervous as you approach the booth.

“Hey..” your voice struggles out before fading. You’re a bit nervous, you’re never this nervous. Your words are trapped by your tongue and the roof of your mouth, pinned there by some unknown force. Why am I so nervous?

Her eyes dart from the glass of nearly full, almost entirely white, cup of cal, then back to you as you stand at a bit of a distance. A hand shoots out from around her cup to a stray party of hair that slouched away from the rest. Her eyes rest back on you before closing and giving you a wide smile, “Hi!” she extends an arm but then quickly moves it to point to the open booth in front of her. “sit, sit, how are you doing? Hmm.. uh, oh, I mean.. who are you?”

“I’m Sam, I mean, my name’s Sam -- Samuel,” she seems a bit too involved with her drink to notice you fumbling with your words as you sit opposite of her.

“Heh, that’s funny,” she lowers her cup, “I also go by Sam.”

“Oh really?” you say a bit taken aback but less nervous.

“Yup. It’s something a friend of mine started to call me by, though it’s not really my name… I mean, it’s my name.. but.. “ her words trail off and she pauses for a moment. “Anyways, how are you? I recently got stranded here.” she gives a quick breathy laugh before taking another long sip. “Why are you here?”

>”Oh, I came here for an interview with Arcady, claiming a position.”

“Stranded?”

“You’re here stranded too?”

“What?” you pause, “No, I mean.. I came over here because I saw the argument you had in the hangar.”

“Oh, that? That was the guy who brought me here. He said he would take me to Leo but all of a sudden my money isn’t enough so he left me here,” her shoulders drop slightly at the mention of the argument. “He said I was a difficult passenger, for whatever that means.”

She takes another sip from her nearly empty cup, seems she had a few others with the three cups sitting next to her. Either she’s really tired, or she really likes the stuff but the only thing you can tell is that she’s really hyper from the cal or just naturally that way. You bet it’s the cal. A few moments pass in silence as she gets another cup, again a frothy, nearly white, full cup of cal. “That’s a lot of creamer.”

“I don’t like the taste, but this place seems to have really good creamer,” she says as she places her other straw with her old one. “I was supposed to go to Leo. Story there, you know? I’m a journalist, well I’m a blogger. Journalism is what I’m striving for. I like reading the news, always did. Grew up on a border world with my.. With family and we would watch a lot of news. Heard of a story up in Leo. Supposed to be something about Arcady or something like that. Then I was thinking of heading back to the border worlds with things starting to heat up from the sound of things.”

“Ahh, yea-”

“But I don’t have a ship and I’m getting low on funds. Don’t even know why I bought five cups, they’re not that cheap.” She says as she reaches up to fix her hair before giving up and just letting it out of the ponytail she had it in. “Anyways… hey, you don’t happen to have a ship? Maybe I could bunk with you if you’re headed that way. If not, I can pay, I know I said I’m low on funds but once we get to Leo I can pay with the money I make from the investigation.”

I have a meeting tomorrow with Arcady, that’s the reason why I’m here after all. Plus my ship is extremely small, I’m not sure I could carry all of your luggage. Though I think I can make room with selling a few things my dad gave me..”

“I’m not claustrophobic if that’s what you’re asking. I can wait, it’s okay. Just need to put up my luggage somewhere, since station beds are only for the station workers,” she talks as she begins to gather her items and other belongings. “It’ll be fine, come on let’s go.”

You narrow your eyes as Sam, weird thinking of her as sam, walks out of the pub. You follow behind and Darious gives you a broad smile and you could swear he winked at you before you left. You grab Sam by her shoulder to slow her down a bit and tell her to follow you. As the two of you make your way to the hangar, you check your display, 23:54. If you recall correctly, the meeting’s at 8:00 which gives you enough time to take a nap.

The large metal doors open up to the hangar, several ships lay in a line with yours being a bit farther down. PD Lakka, one of the smallest thrust-shuttles that you know of, but you called it home for the past week. Which reminds you that you barely cleaned up any. You sigh as the two of you get to your ship. “This is it.”

“You weren’t kidding, your ship is really small. How do you get in?”

“The hatch, you’ll have to crawl into it, not much room for comfort, but it’s just as good as any other ship,” as you finish you press against the unlocking door and watch as the first hatch opens into an airlock. You crawl into the ship first and pull into it her luggage. There’s about three bags which you could fit fine in the locker if you sold the produce your father gave you, though you also need to buy some more food if it’s going to be the two of you for the next twenty or so days. Then again you could always just room in with Darious since he said he has room for your ship and a berth. He seems to be going toward Unity-Point anyways.

You’re disturbed from your thoughts as Sam climbs into the ship after you. “This is pretty cozy if you ask me. Where would.. You know, we would be sleeping?”

“Well I have a bed and a floor, as well as a chair,” you point to the bed that’s imbedded within the wall opposite of the desk, the pilot’s chair (which is barely padded), and the floor the two of you are sitting on.

“That’s not so cozy,” she restates. “Where am I going to put the luggage?”

“The locker to your right there, it has a bunch of crates I can move out of here and sell so you can put it in there.” or you can go to sleep and keep the luggage in the airlock. It’s just as safe anyways.

You open the locker, four metal crates of produce sit behind your EVA suit. Pushing the door open, you slide your legs into the locker and find the bottom of the locker. “Alright, Sam, go find a trolley so we can get this stuff to the market. Need to move it to put your luggage in here.”

“Sure thing, boss,” she says with you not knowing if it was sarcasm or not. You hear her leave the hatch and leave into the hangar. Four metal crates isn’t that heavy, around 15kg each, but isn’t fun to carry around a station for longer than a couple of meters. You wrap your arms around the first crate at the top of the stack and lift it, placing it near the airlock. Before you knew it, Sam was back with a trolley large enough to carry the crates. Perfect.

She helps you load the remaining crates onto the trolley in only a few minutes, probably would have been hell if you had to have carried them by yourself. You don’t think you could carry two of them by yourself all the way to the Market, much less all four. Sam was the first to break the silence of moving crates, “So, what’s in them?”

“I’m.. well I’m not too sure. They’re all produce. Most likely various fruits, since that’s what my father grew,” you look over the crates, all of them are cryo-sealed meaning they’re all frozen and probably just as fresh as they were when they were picked. Curiosity gets to you as you look over the four crates, and you decide to open one. Pressing against the seal, you start to feel the crate vibrate quietly before pressurized air hisses out at the edges, unlocking the crate. You lift the lid, strawberries. Pretty expensive commodity, around a hundred standards for the whole crate, though you know it never sells that high.

The other two crates are citrus fruits, around twenty standards each, and a crate of apples, around fifteen standards, all fresh. “Wow, where did you get all of this from?”

“My dad grew them. Sells them at the market in the local station, gave these crates to me to pad my wallet with I guess,” you say as you reseal the crates. “Let’s get to the market before it gets too late. Need to sleep before the meeting.”

“Lead the way, captain,” she says as you push the trolley off. The two of you make your way out of the hangar and continue on before she, again, breaks the silence first, “So what made you come to Milo. I mean, I know for the Arcady thing, or whatever but.. I mean.. Where are you from?”

“I’m from Haven,”

“Heaven? You don’t look like an angel.. Though I guess..”

“What? No, Haven, it’s about 13 light years out. It’s a Penal colony and I’m a third gen.”

“Third gen, why were you in a penal colony?”

“Not sure, apparently my family was one of those that transferred from another colony, a lot of families tend to be moved around like that. But I never knew why we were there in the first place though.”

“Sounds rough, being the ones to try to colonize a system.”

“Wasn’t that bad, had a lot of friends there. But it’s not like I would have stayed. My older brother, Harrison, definitely didn’t like staying around the place. Left planetside as soon as he hit sixteen and got his certificate. Went and joined the navy.”

“You don’t look sixteen, did you stay?”

“Yeah I stayed with my younger brother, Ben, and my parents for a while. Mainly just to help around the farm, Ben should be graduating in a couple of months too, so..” you slow down as the two of you reach the market. Though most of the crowd had died down, you still see a fair few people walking around the stalls and it still smells a bit like sweaty stale ramen. You push the cart through the small crowd of market-goers. “So.. why don’t you tell me more about you? Why are you a blogger, you said your friends call you Sam what’s your real name, Samantha or something?”

“Blogger, what--”

“Samuel,” You had almost forgotten why you went to the pub a few hours ago. But now you clearly remember -- the white haired girl. Standing in the same spot that you had left her in, right by the Cybernetic and Bioware shop that had already closed for the day. Sam looks at you and then back to the girl who’s now approaching.

“Samuel,” she repeats. Her short, straight cut white flows down past her large collar of her coat. Standing in front of your cart with her arms in her coat’s pockets, she looks between you and Sam, giving an unapologetic smile before focusing back on you.

“Wait, have you been standing there the whole time?” you ask, gripping your trolley cart harder. She makes you nervous, either the unnatural strength of when she grabbed your shoulder or her knowing almost everything about you.

“Yes,” she says bluntly, “It closed for today but I still need to find someone. You’re the first to return.”

“First to return?” what the hell is she on about? “Look, I’m just trying to sell this produce and leave.”

“Ah.. You’re from Haven,” she pauses shortly, staring at you. “Your father grew.. Fruits?”

You could only guess if it was a question since her voice didn’t change tones and there was not inflection. Just the same somewhat monotonous voice. “Yes. Fruits. Fruits I need to sell. Why are you still here? I mean, not here, but like here?”

“What.”

“I mean, why are you still at that shop.. And what did you mean about my.. My job?”

“To find help, and do you mean the secured position? There is none. Adam’s position was taken, we need to hurry to Iota Persei, I need Zaxaminiphul,” her words were stated as a matter of fact, though you could barely read what she’s saying since most of it sounds the same anyways.

“Why Iota Persei?”

“That’s where they sell Zaxaminiphul.”

>Okay, wait first of all, who are you.

“Okay,” You raise your hands and look around for a moment, “Wait one second, slow down. Let’s.. Uh.. get out of the crowd.

She gives you a blank stare and you shake your head, “Just..” you sigh, “follow me.”

You push your cart away from the woman and snake your way through the crowd to an open area away from the prying eyes of some onlookers. Setting your trolley near a bench you sit down with Sam while the white haired girl continues to stand.

“So, back up for a second. How do you know me and who are you?”

“My name is Coraline Kayne and you’re Samuel Ward,” she says blankly.

“Yes I know who I am, but how do you know me?”

“Your certificate.”

“My certificate? Wha- what do you mean, My certificate?”

“It’s a part of the certificate database,” she points to her eyes, “and I found yours.”

Sam looks at you for a second and then back to the girl, she doesn’t seem to know what the girl is talking about either but.. You’re not sure. Coraline then takes a hand out of her pocket and points at Sam, “And her name is Nao-”

“MY.. name’s Sam, I’m from.. I’m from Montaway,” Sam answers quickly as always, probably still hyper from all that cal she drank at the pub since she hasn’t stopped tapping her leg since she sat down.

“Sam is an odd name, especially if yours is--”

“It’s a nickname, you know? My friends gave it to me.”

“Ah. His name can also be Sam, yes?”

“Just call me Samuel, it’s fine,” you answer for Sam. “We’re getting off topic, that doesn’t answer why you know so much about me.”

“It doesn’t?” Still unable to tell if she is asking a question or not, but she continues regardless, “I found your name and then I was able to search your father's name. Through that I was able to find Adam by searching camera footage, which is also how I know you have a ship here.”

“And.. ?”

“And what?”

“How do you know about the..” you lower your head and whisper, “the secured position?”

“Well, records from Arcady states that Adam has a Secured Position and the heir of the position was you,” she shifts her weight to her right leg.

“Was?”

“Yes, past tense.”

“Yeah, no I mean, what do you mean “was”? How do you know?”

“I don’t have the time,” you think you see her sigh, but she still wears a blank face, “I need to get to Iota Persei for Zaxaminiphul. That’s where I need to go.”

“That still doesn’t..” you take a deep breath and sigh, “Look, why did you look up my certificate?”

“Because I need to got to Iota Persei, for Zaxaminiphul.”

“What the hell even is “Zaxamina-whatyoucallit”,” she’s way too literal.

“Zaxaminiphul. It is manufactured by Mino-Maji Cybernetics and is required to be taken by those who have cybernetics. I need it because I have cybernetics. Cybernetic rejection isn’t something I want,” she shifts her weight again to her other leg, everything she says is casual and monotonous.

My plan was to accept Darius offer of work, we would get payd and get a bed in his ship. He said he would tow our ship too so the girls could bunk up inside of it for the trip like we were going to do with Sam, we ask white hair for some payment too, or a chance to look at her cybers, we are engineers and I'm kinda curious as to how they work and we can use this opportunity to learn more
>>

To plan for this, you have the map, the yellow marker is where you are currently are at. Currently there are two flight paths you could take. Leo or Iota Persei. To go to Leo, you would have to pass through Unity-Point, which is dangerous. Or you can break the promise with Sam and head to Iota Persei with Coraline. Or you can ask Coraline more questions.

You still have to sell the Produce and the interview is in 7 and a half hours
>>
>>2786286
I want to ask her if she would find her medicine in Unity or Leo

And add this question too>>2786271
>>

this is good

>>2786291
>>2786266
>>2786298

So the general consensus is

>”Why Iota Persei, specifically why there since I’m sure you could get it somewhere closer.”
>How long do you have until any "rejections" happen?
>if she would find her medicine in Unity or Leo
>If the position is not mine anymore who is going to interview me tomorrow? do you know?

Sounds good?

Also, I will plan out flight paths like >>2786286 if you guys want to go to a place since going to Leo you have like two different routes since you could technically backtrack and go to Haven -> New Arizona -> Leo if you wanted to avoid Unity-Point which is a ship graveyard and memorial.
>>
>>2786310

>>2786310

“Rejection?” you ask, propping your head with your hand as you lean against your leg. “How long do you have until the rejections start?”

“Thirty days. The trip shouldn’t take longer than that. Iota Persei is only..” you watch as her eyes start to flicker and glow a blue before she starts talking again, “twenty-five days.”

“Wow!” Sam lets out, still tapping her leg, “Impressive,” she elbows you in the side, making you jolt up. “I should get some of those! Would make things a whole lot easier.”

“Do you know if anywhere else has this Zax stuff?” you ask, staying on topic.

“No, it’s the only place I was told that has Zaxaminiphul,” Probably from that shop owner. Is that the only reason why she was standing over there?

“Can’t you just check if anywhere else has it? Like Leo?” She pauses and her blank face turns into a flat smile as her eyes twitch. You guess she hasn’t actually looked up if anywhere else has it. Did she really just take the guy’s advice face value? Where did she even come from?

“Yes,” she says finally. “Leo has Zaxaminiphul, there’s a station there manufacturing cybernetics.. Along with..”

“Perfect!” Sam jumps from her seat. “Then you can come with us! We’re heading there tomorrow, Samuel said so himself!”

“You are?” Her face flattens out again before turning facing you, “Thank you.”

What? “No, no, no. She doesn’t speak for me. It’s crowded enough as is. I can’t take another passenger along with all your luggage.”

“I don’t have any luggage,” Coraline looks between Sam and you, “I didn’t find any.”

“Perfect! We just need to sell these crates and we should be off tomorrow after Samuel’s Interview,” Sam again blurts out.

“Of course.”

“Wait, what? No... What?” You shake your head and take a moment, pausing, “Wait.. alright so let’s back up for a second, you said there is not secured position. So if there isn’t a secured position, then why does the email still say I have an appointment tomorrow?”

“Record keeper, I suppose,” first time she isn’t sure.

“Then who is going to be the person who interviews me?”

“I don’t know.”

You don’t know? You don’t know what she’s up to. Either she’s too straightforward and doesn’t think about her surroundings like anyone else would or it’s this Zaxa-whatyoumacallit. Either way, you need to sell your produce and get some sleep. You heard her out and now you know, but it doesn’t change things. “Alright alright. Look, I need to sell this produce before tonight. Sam is bunking with me, I guess, and I have an interview at eight. I can’t spend too much time on this.”

“Alright,” she says and shrugs. “I’ll find you tomorrow then.”

Before you could protest, she walks off into the crowd -- disappearing behind it. She’s just the strangest person I have ever met. Where do these people come from, and why do I even have to help all of them?

“She seemed nice. I hope we can take her to Leo, she seemed to need that.. Zaxapheminal thing bad.”

“Do you know what it is? Like what it does?”

“Not a clue,” she says before patting your back, “come on, let’s go sell this stuff then.”

The two of you make your way into the crowd and before long you find the produce section of the stalls where an old man watches over a still open stall. As the two of you approach, he jumps up from his stool and waves you over.

“Buying a lot today, are you?” His voice was croaked and sounded like gravel, “I have a lot to buy!”

“No, we’re selling these crates, Strawberries, apples, and two citrus crates. All fresh.”

“All fresh hmm?”

“Yup! Cryo-sealed too!” Sam says as she taps the top of one of the crates.

“Oh? Well.. Apples.. Strawberries..” he looks at the counter and fumbles with several different display screens.. “Citrus too? Hmm. Well the prices that currently sell at are.. hmm. I can buy them off of you for Seventy-five standards.”

>That’s not right! You know for a fact that they are worth at least a hundred and fifty in total, 175 at max. [Haggle]

Look, these are straight from the fields, they're delicious. That price is an insult. If I wasn't constrained for time, I could go and get twice that from that other vendor, so how about lets skip the haggling and you give us a decent price? Say, 150?

“What?” you say before thinking. “Are you kidding me? That’s way too low to even be worth it. The strawberries themselves sell for a Hundred standards.”

You see Sam look are you from the corner of your eye as the old man sits up and straightens his back. “You’re right. Though if I buy everything at sell value how do you expect me to make any money? You think people even buy at value? This isn’t a rich market. I can’t buy everything at what it says everything sells for.”

“That’s not what I’m asking you to do. At the very least a hundred and fifty standards. The stock value for these crates are a hundred and seventy-five. You can’t say that a margin of twenty-five isn’t profit, and I won’t let you swindle me for some fruit.”

“Alright alright,” the old man shakes his head and places his arms on the counter, “Calm down. Look, I can sell it to you for a hundred and fifteen. Any more and I would be better off burning standards.”

Mr. Haggler, you are an experienced trader and you will sell these for 150 with ease, even 160 and I bet you will. Let me tell you somehting, my friend here is a reporter and runs a blog, why don't you ask her to write up a small review about your shop and we close the deal in 130?

“Look. You’re an experienced tradesman. You know how things work, you know how to smooth over deals, selling these at value is a non-issue. One fifty, one seventy-five. Easy. All I ask is for one thirty,” you say as you lean back, taking off your red baseball cap and place your hand on the crates as you do so. “Selling is your spess-she-ality.”

“Mmph,” he gives his nonverbal reply as he folds his arms and puts on some reading glasses, opening something on one of his many counter displays.”I don’t like buying so close to the margin.”

“When’s the next shipment, how many strawberries are on it?”

“Next shipment is in.. Well it’s in a month,” he grumbles. “No strawberries, never bought them since they run such a high price.”

“Sell them over their value, know any that sell strawberries here?”

“Strawberries? No..”

“Well then we have a deal,” Sam speaks up. “You don’t have any strawberries here, and if no one sells them then it’s demand and supply. Simple. Right? So you buy these crates at one thirty and you sell them for a higher price. You’ll thank us later.”

He sighs, “Fine,” he resigns. Sam gives you a bright smile as you sign the paperwork and hand over the four crates of produce. 480▲ blinks dulling against your mobile display. Finally, enough room to stuff her luggage in the locker and go to sleep. You look back to your clock and it glows a solid 1:15, could squeeze about six hours of sleep in before having to wake up and clean myself up. You close your display and put it in your coat before looking back to Sam.

“Didn’t know you liked to haggle prices,” she says as she smiles, proud of herself.

“Didn’t know you were good at it,” you reply as you put your hat back on, “Come on. It’s getting late. Need to get at least some sleep tonight, gotta be fresh for tomorrow.”

“Even if Coraline said there’s no position there?”

“I don’t think I can trust her,” you say as the two of you leave the market. You check your display again, looking at the map. “Besides, who trusts a stranger who instantly knows your name, date of birth, and where you’re from? I certainly wouldn’t.”

Sam lets out a quiet laugh before the two of you fall into silence and stay in silence as you find your way to the hangar where your ship is docked. Sam seems to have started to crash from all the cal she drank, surprised she hasn’t had a heart attack to be truthful. That much cal can’t ever really be healthy, but you’ve heard stories of guys drinking far more than she could possible down and still walk.

(1/2)
>>
>>2786765
The two of you make it to your ship fairly quickly with Sam starting to yawn and nearly trip over a set of pipes that line the floor. You press against the door seal and crawl in, nearly passing out almost instantly.

Those eyes, whose..

An alarm you forgot you had set suddenly stirs you awake from whatever dream you were having. Eyes? You shake your head and stretch in your bed a bit before hitting your foot against the metal wall to your right side. Oh fuck. you hush yourself before looking around and turn upward to see a pink haired girl nestled and curled up in your chair. Damn thing’s harder than a rock, you wonder how in the world she could be comfortable sitting in that thing even more so how she could sleep curled up like that. You let out a sigh and look around the cabin again. You check your display, 6:15, you don’t even remember when you set the alarm, much less remember when you went to sleep.

3 for normal morning routine

Alrighty!
>>
>>2786768
You slowly gather courage to wake up as you plan your morning. Get up, take a show, eat, do something about that chair.. Get to the interview finally. You stretch a final time and yawn silently as you slink out of the bed onto the floor, bringing your blankets and your pillow with you.

Pushing everything back onto the bed, you start to pick out your clothes for the morning. Opening the locker, you find just what you were looking for -- the fine suit your father gave you and the polished shoes to match the rest. Blue coat, tie, and dark brown pants with a white dress shirt underneath. “Perfect.” you think out loud, somewhat hushed and breathy. You place it into the shower in the plastic seal and get in.

Fucking COLD. You wish you had a way to fix this shower, but you just wait it out as the water heats up and then begin to lather up your hair. Been an exciting past day, too exciting. Is everyone out here this crazy or is Milo just a good sample of weirdos.. You think as you begin to rinse your short hair. You never knew blond carried such a bad name, must have been a thing outside of penal colonies since you never really heard of anyone not liking blond hair. Hell, you thought people preferred blond hair, but think that it’s something awful? Outlandish. And then that white haired girl.. Coraline. What an odd one.. Good thing Sam isn’t that weird, though you barely even met her before you started to accept her. Sam.. She’s kind of..

You shake your head. Nah.

As you finish your shower you peak your head out of the door and still see her sitting in that damnable chair. No idea how she does it. You get dressed and crawl out from the shower and sit in front of the desk crossed legged and turn to Sam. “Hey, wake up.”

She doesn’t move. Probably still on that crash, hits you pretty hard from so high up. You sigh. “HEY, WAKE UP.”

She stirs, if so slightly before suddenly popping her head from her knees, “hmm?”

(1/2)
>>
>>2786972
“Wake up,” you say before opening the cabinet. “Time for breakfast, I don’t want you eating everything while I’m gone. Besides, you need to go to the store and pick up some bedding for that chair.”

“Naaan..” she says half awake. “Hmm?”

“For the love of..” you mumble to yourself as you take out one of the nutrition bars. “Come here.”

“Watash.. wha.. Huh?” She kind of just stares at you for a moment before blinking slowly. “Why.. why do y- you look like you’re going to start talking about sports?”
She laughs lightly to herself before stretching her back out, raising her arms and grabbing one at the elbow. You just take a bite of the bar and nearly choke on it before turning back to your food. Sports? You take another bar and toss it over to Sam, “What do you mean?”

“Well you don’t really look like you’re going to a business interview.. I mean..” She says after catching and almost dropping the bar. “I mean, you look more professional. But..”

“But?”

“Hmm.. nothing.”

“Well, anyways.. You’re going to have to buy some padding.”

“Why’s that?” She looks down and then back at you with a raised brow. “You don’t..”

“You’d probably kill yourself if you had to sleep in that thing for more than a day, much less twenty.”

“That thing.. Oh, you mean the chair!” she gives a sort of relieved look as she bops her head with the nutrition bar. “Of course that’s what you’re talking about… Cheapskate.”

“Cheapskate?” You turn back to her, “I didn’t realize I was a taxi service.”

She just smiles the same bright smile before biting into her own bar. “Alright.”

You sigh as you finish your bar and look at the time. 7:37.

“Alright,” you say to no one in particular.

“Hmm?” Sam says as she’s stirred from her meal.

“I’m off. Buy padding or something so you don’t arrive in Leo with a broken back. Also,” You turn back to her as you start to open the hatch, “ship is handprinted. Can’t fly it without my hands on that wheel, don’t get any funny ideas.”

“I feel bad that you’d think so lowly of ME, a stranger,” she smiles widely before shooing you away with a hand.

“Later,” you think back to the market for a second.. “Nao.”

“What!”

You close the hatch before she could respond that much and you climb out of the airlock, stretching your back and straightening your suit. I don’t look like a sports news anchor. You look yourself over in the shiny part of a ship near you. Some overpriced freighter, probably Atlas-made. You run your hands through your newly groomed hair and stubble-free chin before noticing someone was standing behind you.

“Samuel. It’s tomorrow,” her voice carries over and startles you, making you jump slightly.

“What the hell, C-- uhh, Coraline was it?” You say before straightening yourself out. “Warn someone before sneaking up on them like that, geez.”

“You seemed busy, didn’t want to bother you.”

“And yet..”

“It’s tomorrow, can you talk now?”

You look at your mobile display before showing it to her. “Seven Thirty-nine. I have the meeting at Eight. No I can’t talk now.”

“Later?”

“Wha- no! Just... “ You mouth your words as you hear Sam in the ship turn on the water. “Look. I’m busy right now.”

You start pass Coraline and begin to walk toward the Hangar exit, checking the map on your display. As you make your way through the station, you can hear footsteps and when you turn around you still see Coraline following you. She stops as you stop and then takes out a sucker she had and unwraps it. “I’m good.”

“What?”

“You stopped at the pub,” she points to the pub’s door. “I’m not that hungry.”

“Wha-” you turn to the door and then back to her. “No. I mean-”

“We can talk after the meeting. The one at eight. I don’t know where it’s at so I’ll follow you.”

“That’s.. Whatever,” you shake your head and continue to follow the map with Coraline in tow. As you near where the map says is the offices, you turn to look at Coraline. “Look..”

“It’s okay. I will wait,” she just stares at you before taking out the sucker and looking at it disappointingly as it’s just the white paper stick now. You take check your display quickly 7:56.

>Tell Coraline off, you can’t have her standing outside of the offices.

“How do I look?”

“You look good,” she says plainly, “You do know I’m right, right?”

You watch her with he hands in her overly large coat pockets as she stares at you. You sigh, “You got a mirror at least?”

“Why would I carry one?” She raises an eyebrow, most you’ve seen her face move, “Do you think I should carry one? How do I look?”

“What? You look the same as yesterday,” you shake your head “You look just fine. Now..”

“Thanks.”

You shake your head before looking at the large menacing doors in front of you. Three times larger than you, and probably twice as thick as you are. You run your hand through your hair one last time before placing a flat palm against one of the doors. The heavy wooden door slowly creaks open, revealing a large dimly lit office. Black marble tiles and a long red carpet outlining a path out to an ominous black desk facing the you with a well dressed man standing behind it looking out of a thickly tinted window that covers the back wall entirely.

“Just look at them. They work endlessly, back and forth like mindless beasts, as you would call them,” He starts without facing you, “There’s a place for them and a place for us. Upper crust, management is written all over your profile. I read it a few days ago, Miss Bordeleaux, impressive work. Arcady wants more like you; a strong, independent, investigative woman. Someone who can work hard and motivate others to do their work and understand people better than their coworkers. Someone who fights for the little people. Someone with strong qualities like you. I know journalism was your previous career, and we can look past the few articles you’ve written so far as long as you take them down. A place for you in Arcady is guaranteed, a place amongst..”

He trails off as he turns to you and narrows his eyes as you stand in the middle of the doorframe. “You’re not a woman..” He turns to another lady sitting at a comically small desk on the wall to your right, “Elizabeth, I thought you said that you had fixed my schedule, eight o’clock is the Bordeleaux meeting, where is Bordeleaux?”

“Abigaile, and the meeting was changed. I sent you the schedule five days ago.” Her otherwise deadpan expression is broken by a wiry smile as she nods to you and fixes her desk nameplate, “sec. Abigaile Adderson” shown on gold against a dark wood, “A Mr. Ward was supposed to arrive at your eight o’clock.”

He turns back to you as he walks over to his desk and places both his hands onto it, “And are you a Mr. Ward?”

“Ah.. uh,” You look between the two, “Yes, I’m Samuel Ward. I was told I’d..”

“Yes, the secured position left by your.. What was he? You family Friend, Adam Tennent.” His expression changes quickly and the dim office starts to brighten, the black marble turning into a white and the carpet a blue. “Please have a seat. Forgive me, my secretary, Miss Anna there,”

(1/3)
>>
>>2787293
“Abigaille,” Her voice more of a sigh than anything. You notice a large steel thermos sits on top of her desk besides a blue angled screen as you walk toward the now white marble desk and a seat rises from the ground beside you.

“..told me the wrong date. Adam’s last position was a minor managerial position in the Leo System, no?” He says before taking his own seat as a blue screen rises from the center of the desk. A bright smile washes over his face. “A good position to give to you, with my records I can tell you’ve worked some small time, behind the counter, jobs. With Arcady you can expect much more than just the customer handling. Along with valuable experience you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Within this position you will find yourself well off if you are able to communicate well with others, program and manage equipment, able to work schedules and able to manage a team, able to think forward, able to problem solve, and with financial management skills, then this position is the best possible choice for someone like you. Do you think you could properly maintain a small team to produce correct rates? Do you think you’re up to a task like this?”

“I uhh,” you say as he pauses for a second before he raises an eyebrow. I guess Coraline was lying after all. Thank God. This sounds great.

“No need to answer now, there’s much to do before you start. Time between travel would be at least two months, I expect training would continue on from there.. Adam Tennent left you quite a spot Mister... Hmm, that’s odd.” He edges closer to the screen before pointing over to Abigaile, “Annabelle, send me that document on the Leo System.” A few seconds pass as you look between the two, his eyes narrow and his face turns hard as he reads whatever was on his screen.

“I apologize Mr. Ward. It seems the position is no longer available.” He says finally.

WHAT? “I thought it was a secured position, doesn’t that mean..”

“Yes, it means whoever the one who previously held the position names will then take over the position. Unless..” he cuts you off before you finish and then pauses for a moment before continuing, “Unless the previous holder of the position is forcibly removed by those above him. It seems that Adam named you as his heir to his position, but there was a management issue to be found and his position was revoked. I apologize as I understand his death must have been a difficult thing to find out.”

“He didn’t die, he said in a letter that he would be stepping down and giving me the position as he would live on Haven.”

(2/3)
>>
>>2787303
“He did die, it says right here, cause of death was unknown. Though he was revoked his title before he left the Leo System. The article speculates that there was a malfunction within his vessel, again unknown. Some are saying there’s something fishy but.. I don’t believe it. I apologize but that position is no longer available as a Mister John Colby currently holds that position. If you wish to continue this meeting you will no longer be considered for a managerial position, but enter into the position of Cargo Handler, Inventory associate, General Associate, Sales Associate, or a Technician. Skills must be met to be eligible for the positions and training would first be needed to be handled. I can set you up for a position within the same system if you wish but if you want to continue to work for a managerial position of the same caliber, you must first be a part of Arcady’s wonderful team for a minimum of twenty years, which then you must already have some experience in management.”

Coraline was right.

I said in the discord that the ship has a maximum run of about 40lys before having to refuel. You can get some in one of the other stations along the way. There's several stations, including your home station. If you go the other route, there isn't a station in Unity Point as it's more or less a ship graveyard. Most -Points are memorials and isn't really a public thing, and more likely to harbor those doing illegal things.

You stand up from the black velvet chair and it sinks into the floor. What the hell. This was supposed to be a secured position. You get it, and you’re golden. Who the hell is this John Colby and why does he have my position.

You stare at the man at the desk, his cleanly pampered hair glistens with whatever hair product he put on this morning. The room smells like expensive cologne and cheap tricks. You turn to look at the Secretary, Abigaile as she starts to stand up from her desk and then back to the man in front of you. Both of them wearing a concerned expression and with that you notice how you’re clenching your fist and holding your shoulders so tightly.

You breathe deeply, relaxing your shoulders and releasing your fist, with closed eyes. “Where did his flight path say he was headed before the accident?”

“What?”

“Adam, what did his black box, the one behind the central computer console, say. What was his flight path?” He looks at you with a raised eyebrow before taking his elbows off the desk and looking at his screen.

“It seems his computer has made a path to Haven, taking a flight to New Arizona, Holliday, then to Haven. He left Leo’s research station at around five,” he says before leaning back into his chair and folding his arms across his chest.

“Do you know why he was headed to Holliday instead of taking a straight flight to Haven?”

“No clue.”

You stare at him for a moment, watching his expressions, before you quickly bow. “Thank you for your time but I apologize, I will not be taking the offer. I’m not going to work as a cargo tech.”

“If that’s the plan, Mr. Ward. You have my deepest condolences. Mr. Tennent was a valuable member of the Leo team and his death was unfortunate,” he says as you turn away from him and walk towards the doors. “Alayna, help Mr. Ward out.”

“Abigaille,” she sighs as she quickly reaches your side. She pauses for a second and summons a wiry smile before bowing quickly, “Mr. Ward. Thank you for coming and we will love to see you again if you change your mind about your career choice. If you wish to seek help with anything, please contact me and I will help you out with anything you need. Don’t worry about the hours since I’m working all the time anyways..”

You watch as her face turns from a wiry smile to something sadder as you accept her card, “Thank you, Miss Abigaille. I’ll make sure to call if I need anything.”

She nods before starting to walk towards the two towering doors, motioning you to follow behind her. As you reach the doors she gets closer, “Seems shady to me. I wouldn’t stick my nose into something like that if I was you, then again I work for them and I’m not you.. So, I.. I’m not too sure. Sorry for this Samuel.”

She summons another wiry smile before she starts to open the heavy doors. As the doors creak back open you find Coraline, making Abigaille squeak.

“What’s shady?” Coraline says plainly.

“Oh uhh. Who..”

“It’s fine, she’s with me. Again, thank you, Abigaille.”

>”Abigaille, why tell me anything? Is your boss that insufferable?” Talk with Abigaille before you leave. She could probably help, probably the only person you’ve met that could help.
>Thank Abigaille. She’s too close to Arcady. She’s most likely in on everything and wouldn’t think twice about feeding you lies.

“Coraline, you’re right, there’s no secured position,” you sigh as you step outside of the office.

“I know. Are we heading to Leo now?”

“Well if you’re done then..” Abigaille says behind you as she’s about to close the door.

“Wait a second, come out here. Need to ask you..”

“Ask me?” She looks at you quizzically.

“Why tell me anything?” You say as you motion her closer, “Is your boss that insufferable?”

“All bosses are insufferable. Zachary is just.. Not all there. I’m not a fan of who I work for, the company seems shady and I was only just hired as a secretary a few months back. It’s not something I try to make note of but there’s been three others just like you. They were women though and I’m pretty sure that Miss Bordeleaux, that journalist, knew what was up and changed schedule last minute. Seems she didn’t even arrive, at least she didn’t arrive on her own ship like you did since that’s how we knew you were here.”

“That name sounds familiar,” Coraline pipes in, “I think I’ve met her before.”

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Well?”

“Well what?”

You sigh.. “Abigaille, what do you know about the other cases? The three women before me?”

“Well they were all headed to Leo as well. They didn’t have secured positions like you, but.. Once they arrived their offer was revoked and given a different offer. They accepted and went to Leo. Through Unity-Point. Thing with that is, they didn’t arrive at Leo. Ships say it was lost in flight but I don’t buy that one bit.”

“Yeah, that does sound shady…” you say as you hear the man from the office start calling names out.

“That’s my cue,” Abigaille says as she smiles and bows before opening the door and going back into the office. You look at Coraline who remains blank-faced and then back at the hard paper card.

“Well. What do you think? Do you have any ideas on what to do next, I’m kind of lost here.”

“We go to Leo.”

“You think? I was thinking that too, though we’d have to go through unity.. Might be the best choice though,” not picking up on what she’s saying.

“I suppose if that’s what you want,” she looks at you before continuing, “When do we leave?”

“Well..”you look at the large doors and then back at the hallway. “Let’s walk and talk. Get some distance from here.”

“Alright.”

The two of you make your way away from the office before you start back up as you follow the map back to your ship. “Arcady seems just shady to me.”

“I suppose, I wouldn’t know.”

“Yeah.. well we’re going to be heading to Leo. Do you know anything about the incident in Leo? There was a man named Adam Tennent, he died while heading out of the system. The official report says its--”

“Yeah. Adamn Tennent, age seventy-four. Died of a malfunction within his ship causing the ship to explode. His body was not recovered.”

“Does it say anything else?”

“Yes. It says the Leo enforcement chief claims that if there was any issues to be found then it will be discovered under his watch as he works with Arcady officials to produce results.”

“The enforcement chief?”

“Yes.”

“Well.. I mean..” you manage out before spotting Sam carrying two large sleeping pads. She waves first, almost dropping one pad, and jumps up to get your attention which she already had.

“Hey!” she shouts over the hall. “How’d things go with the interview? And hey, Coraline, didn’t know you were going with him for it.”

“I was right,” Coraline says matter-of-factly.

“There’s no position. Apparently they revoked the title before..”

“Before Adam died in an accident.”

“Adam? That’s the one I’m writing about! Him and five others who had mysteriously disappeared!”

“Do you know anything about the others that disappeared?”

“No not at all, that’s why I’m investigating,” she says as hands over a pad to Coraline who takes it and thanks Sam.
“Well..” You watch as the two girls carry the sleeping pads as you walk back to your ship. “Wait a second.”

“Something wrong?” Coraline says as she turns back.

“Of course there’s something wrong! Why are you following us still?”

“I’m with you, remember?” She says plainly before continuing to walk toward your ship.”Besides, you promised you’d help me.”

“I did not. I said we would talk.”

“And we’re talking. Now, let’s get to Leo. It’s important we get there in time.

This is the end of Session 0 of For Hire. Thank you for playing. Before we go, I have a few decisions that need to be made before the start of the next session.

[Do you take Coraline]
>Yes. You already basically said you’d bring her and she’s already here. She seems more help than harm with her being able to know most people by just looking at them and would help once we get to Leo though you know nothing about Cybernetics.
>Yes. She has been helpful so far and everything she’s said has been right. She’s an asset and even if she’s dense, she’s still useful in your current problem.
>No. She’s a liability and more hassle than anything else. You don’t run a daycare.
>No. It’s too crowded with all these strangers in your ship. Sure you can fit three in your ship but do you want to live for the next week with two girls in your cabin.. I mean.. Well..

[Darious]
>Go back and talk with him he has a ship and can fly you to unity-point safely. Or as safe as you could guess.
>Take him up on his offer. He’s a good guy with a golden heart, and golden coffers waiting to help you out. Need the three grand anyways.
>He’s obviously a space pirate.
>Evil man do bad.

[What flight path do you take?]
>Orange. Avoid Unity-Point all together. Can’t be too safe and Haven is your home. Might as well stop by and tell them the bad news.
>Green. Fastest path. Need to get there as fast as possible and not waste any time. Coraline needs the meds (if you take her) and wasting time will slow down your investigation. Plus Unity-Point is shady as shit. Going through there will probably mean finding out more about these Arcady disappearances that Abigaille was talking about.

whoops dropped my image.

Also as stated before. The ship has a maximum run of about 40lys before having to refuel. You can get some in one of the other stations along the way. There's several stations, including your home station. If you go the other route, there isn't a station in Unity Point as it's more or less a ship graveyard. Most -Points are memorials and isn't really a public thing.

There's 0 reason not to help if we are going there, also, I want to change that thing about not knowing anything about Cybers during the trip

Also, ask Sam/Nao why she didn't go to her interview in Arcady since that journalist the guy was talking about is obviously her, confirmed by Caroline remembering her last name

>>Yes. You already basically said you’d bring her and she’s already here. She seems more help than harm with her being able to know most people by just looking at them and would help once we get to Leo though you know nothing about Cybernetics.
It'd be weird not to after knowing she will be fucked if she stays here, besides, Nao would think we are a turbo asshole if we don't she already got a pad for her

Darius:

I mean, comon, "hey stranger I never met! do you want to make three grand by pushing some crates? work that I could have been done for way less or just for an extra effort of the crew instead of parting with such a big cut?
Oh, and I notice you have a ship, why don't you bring it with you since it is worth way more then your life, it's not like we are going to space you and keep it, right?"

Flight plan:

fastest way and may give us some insight on what happened.

>so, miss Bordeleaux, experienced journalist and blogger, why did you fail to show up at your interrview with Arcady? I'm not mad but when were you planning on telling me since you knew I was going there?
>>

ok, after thinking about it a little I've decided to change somethings in my vote.

we just learned that 3 people(all women) that were offered a deal and made an interview where they were told the deal was off and that they had a new one disappeared on the way to Leo.
The interviewer even asked his secretary "why is he not a woman?" or something, he clearly expected to talk with another victim of his disappearance scheme (don't know if he is aware of it or just following orders on the blind).
Being offered a position and then disappearing was probably the intended fate of Miss Bordeleaux(Sam/Nao), since she had an interview and the guy who was transporting her to Leo just HAD to leave her here(probably so they could get her too)
A stranger comes to us instead of anyone else on the station and offers 3 grand for a milk run that takes us to the place where those 3 people disappeared.
He seems to know us and even know we have a ship, even though we never met before.

I'm almost positive that he is the one hired to make people disappear and that he figured he could score our ship and have us on board to make things easier, so I change my vote regarding:

Darius:
>write-in: get out of the station NOW! this way we have a headstart on him while he waits us to give him an answer for his proposition

I am keeping the:
Flight plan:
>green

but I'm giving you guys some things to consider while you vote.
If we go by green we might learn something about the women that disappeared, it would probably help us in the Adam investigation since it all seems connected, but it's risky.

if we go Orange we can stop by Haven to refuel and probably pick a job to deliver something to New Arizona since Haven is a producing system and New Arizona is a trade hub, but we would take longer to reach our destination.

I'm really confident on these things I theorized, it all comes together provided that Sam/Nao is Miss Bordeleaux, which I'm positive she is since the description the guy from Arcady gave about her was spot on.

Good thing our guy has an interest in Police and Investigation (due to chargen)

and a name I guess...ugh...I feel dirty...

>Orange. Avoid Unity-Point all together. Can’t be too safe and Haven is your home. Might as well stop by and tell them the bad news.

Yeah! And we can look for the Quetzalcoatl medicines for Coraline at Haven and New Arizona. That route also keep us safe and we rather play detectives on a later date.

You rub the slightly raised print of Abigaille’s card as you look between the two girls. Just a day ago you had the ship to yourself but now it’s already getting cramped, How did I get into this mess. You think to yourself as you watch the two girls make their way to the small flying closet of a ship you’ve called home for the past week. You didn’t really agree to both Coraline and Sam to be joining you on your way to Leo, but it’s not like you can back out of it now.

Low on food, no idea how much the fees are for docking, no job, even less money, and to make it all worse you just found out about the death of a long time friend -- no -- a member of the family, your family. Arcady has something foul brewing but it’s not like you can worry about other-worldly issues when you’re out of work and out of time. You sigh as you reach your ship’s hatch and press your open palm against the release. “A great start,” you say out loud.

As you climb into your small cabin, you see Sam already preparing the pilot chair she had slept in the previous night, and Coraline already asleep on you bed. “Hey, Sam, why is the walking computer girl sleeping in my bed?”

“Well, I guess it would mean she’s tired. She wouldn’t stop talking about going to Leo on the trip over here. I’m glad you said she could come, it’s going to be just like a sleep over!”

“No. For one, it’s going to be a month and two, I never agreed to any of this!”

She looks back to you from over the back part of the chair and gives you a pouting face, “Can’t go back on your word already, Mr. Samuel Ward. Besides, I already bought her the padding so she can sleep too! With my own standards, no less!”

You sigh in defeat as you sit cross legged in the hallway. At least you can actually fit three people in here, I didn’t even think it would. “Fine.”

Her face relaxes and turns into a smile as she continues to mess with whatever she’s doing.

“But… you’re going to help pay for the food and the docking fees since you’re the one who invited Coraline, you’re going to help pay for Coraline. Doubt whatever’s going on with her she’d know how to pay.”

Sam quickly looks back up to you and gives you a smirk as she places her hands on her hips, “pfft.. Cheapskate.”

“Am not.”

“Are too!”

>Go to the market and buy food for three people. Food is the most important thing so far, need to get to Leo alive.
>Pay the docking fees first. Probably the biggest hit to the funds but if you can’t pay them, you can’t leave.
>Take in the moment for a second, take a breather. It’s been a day and all this shit has already piled up onto your plate taller than you, sift through it, calm down.
>Call up Abigaille. You did just leave and she’s probably not expecting you to call her so suddenly but you’ve got a question.

“Haha.. no.. I think I’m pretty generous considering..”

She stops pouting as she thinks about it for a moment before returning to poke at you some more, “Still. Cheapskate. Generous Cheapskate.”

She smiles as you roll your eyes, “Well. Either way. I don’t have the money to pay for all of it by myself. You’re going to have to help. Anyways.. Let me get dressed, do what you have to do before then. Can’t go walking around the market in my.. nice clothes.”

She gives a silent nod as you move to grab some clothes from your locker. Shame I only have this one set of clothes. Should probably buy some more if I have the chance, can’t always look like whatever Sam thinks I look like in it. you sigh as you choose some casual clothes out and place them into the shower, or mock dressing room for now, More clothes in general wouldn’t hurt.

As you you climb out of the shower you see Sam sitting at your desk cross legged across from the sleeping Coraline. She turns and smiles as she sees you, “Alright. To the market first?”

“Nah, no.. we probably need to pay off the docking fees first.”

“Coraline coming?”

“Of course. You saw her creepy eye thing, can’t imagine what else she has in her. Might steal my ship and fly to Leo by herself if she had the chance.”

“Ohh don’t be like that! She’s been nothing but helpful.”

“I’ve only told you the whole truth since I met you, Samuel,” Coraline says as she rises from your bed, the bed sheets cling before sloping away. Her face is imprinted and red from where she propped it against her arm as she scrunches her brow in slight confusion.

You close your eyes and turn away from the two of them and open the hatch. “Come on. Let’s go. You’re coming with regardless, Coraline,” you sigh.

The three of you exit your ship and straightens out your clothes before spotting one of the several station’s dock hands standing near a console. As you approach you can hear some of his conversation over his comms strapped to the console, static chatter. His somewhat worn but youthful face forms a smile as you find your way in front of him, “Welcome to Milo Station zero one. What would you like to know or would like assistance with?”

“I’m about to leave and I’m looking to pay my docking fees.”

“Name and ship serial?”

“Samuel A. Ward, Five five one six three eight nine nine four three eight two. Should be a Polyhedral Dynamics Lakka, a uh.. Paxos class.”

“Ah, it’s right here. You stayed for a day, leaving so soon?” he looks up at the three of you and he simply raises an eyebrow before turning back to his console, “either way, a single day with the smaller vessels like yours only costs, including the air, water, and electricity costs, add to a total of… Four Hundred and Fifty standards. How would you be paying?”

Four hundred and fifty? I only have four hundred and.. you look to your mobile display, Right. Four hundred and seventy seven. Great. Didn’t even eat anything last night either.

>”Alright, I’ll pay it all. Sam, you’re going to pay for all of the food for the next month though.” Damn fees.
>”Well them. Sam, how about we split this, you said you’d help pay for this. Two two five, even split.”
>”Sam, can you cover this by yourself? I’ll cover the all the food and other expenses.”
>”A uhh, ¾ split. I pay three thirds of it and you pay the rest, deal, Sam?” 337▲ is still a hell of a lot, just a bit more manageable you guess.

“Sam,” you turn to Sam and start to whisper, “You said you’d help, right?”

“Yeah, sure. What’s up?

“Even split?”

“For four-fifty? Yeah, that’s fine with me,” she says before pausing and raising an eyebrow, “Wait.. how much do you have?”

“Uhh… “

Her face turns to a smirk as she raises both of her brows, “Geez, I didn’t know you were so low on standards, I mean I’m low.. But..” She pauses and smiles as she returns to the dock hand, “We’ll be splitting the bill. Two fifty, each.”

“Alright, let me…” he pauses as he types something on his console, “Alright,” a small screen pops out from the console near Sam, “Sign here and scan your chip, here. Are you three.. Traveling together?”

As Sam is fiddling around with the screen, you turn to face the dockhand as he raises an eyebrow and a smile grows across his face, “Uhh, yeah. Why?”

“Oh nothing.. Uh, sign here and scan your chip,” he pauses and waits for you to start paying, “Just seems, the ship you’re flying is a bit small for three to hold up in, are you… married?”

You quickly look up from your screen, the dock hand’s smile turns wicked as he starts to chuckle to himself as your own face turns a bit hot, “N--”

“Yes, it’s.. “ you turn to Sam who just gives you a flat smile, “it’s a live-in relationship mainly. No official script or anything though. Coraline is a friend of mine, we’re heading to the border worlds, if you can believe that. Though, right now we’re heading to a little place called Haven. I heard they just have the best strawberries.”

“Ah. I see. Well, there’s a discount for couples, about fifteen percent off.. So I’ll just add that. So you’ll both be paying one hundred and ninety-one standards, enjoy your travels,” his words are covered with a cruel smile as he returns to whatever he was doing before you had approached him.

“What the hell, Sam?” you say as the three of you leave the dockhand.

“I hadn’t known the two of you were married,” Coraline says as she follows you to the Hangar exit.

“We’re not.”

“We are now, Sammy-poo,” she says as she gets close to your side and grabs your arm, hugging it closely.

“Congratulations.”

“You’re insane,” you say flatly.

“That cuts deep, Sammy,” she says as she releases your arm, “I just saved you some standards. You can thank me later,” her wide smile returning.

“Fine, look, thank you for saving me some standards. Just.. just don’t go telling strangers that we’re married.”

“What? You don’t think I would make a good wife?”

“No.”

“I think you are a fine wife,” Coraline says plainly as she searches her coat for a moment before producing another lolipop.

“We’re not married,” you sigh as you check your display for the station’s map and your remaining funds.

“Fine with me..” you say looking over the station map, several small stores populate the map with a few of the larger ones called Qik-In, a name you’re vaguely familiar with. “Looks like we’ll head to one of the marts, a Qik-in.”

“Oh? They have a lot of good stuff,” Sam says, looking from her own display. “We can get rice, and flour, and meat, like those really nice red meats that are marbled nicely and are really juicy, and potatoes, the little red ones are my favorite, ooh and sweet potatoes, and carrots, and..”

“And sweets,” Coraline quietly says behind you.

“Yes! Something sweet! Like some cake or brownies, or those little pastries that stick together and are

“H-hold on. We’re going to mainly just get nutri-bars since it’s three of us for a month. I’m not that willing to spend all my standards on food,” you say as the three of you walk.

“Fiiiine.. No fun whatsoever today, Sammy. You don’t even seem that happy we’re married.”

“I want a divorce.”

“So soon?” she gasps dramatically, holding a hand over her mouth. To be fair you’re not happy. Not at all. You could guess Sam is just trying to cheer you up but it’s not that helpful, really. You’re not in the mood for any of it, ever since you left the offices it’s all you could think about -- Adam. To kill him off just like that? For what? Just some stupid low level manager position? John Colby. That stupid fu- Your thoughts are interrupted as your small group reaches the mart. Most of what you can see are aisles and aisles of food and produce, though there are smaller sections for more housing items or clothes.

“What to get?” Sam says as she picks up a market list. “Seems there’s meat on sale in the frozen section, though it’s just chicken. I wonder if they have.. Oh they do, Sukiyaki Beef! We can get some spices too! Need some udon too.. Green onions.. Sake, onions, sugar, and mirin.. Though I already brought some with me..”

“What?”

“Sukiyaki!” She says turning to face you obviously noticing your face turning from slight confusion to no-idea-what-you’re-talking-about, “Er-uh.. A hot-pot, never had one before?”

“I mean..”

“It’ll only be like sixty standards to get some of the stuff I even have my gas stove from home, think the gas cans are around fifteen standards, so..”

>”Fine. You said we’ll split it. You buy whatever you want with your standards, and I’ll buy whatever with mine.”
>”Fine. But that’s all of the leisure foods we are getting. Nothing else more than that.”

“Fine… but, this is the only leisure food we’re buying. Nothing else. Deal?” You say, narrowing your eyes.

“Deal!” She says shooting out a hand, you mindlessly take her hand and shake.

“Coraline, what about you? Do you have any standards?” You say to Coraline while shaking Sam’s hand.

“Sta-” Sam mouths the rest of the word before her off hand shoots to cover her mouth and stifle a laugh as well as a cruel-looking smile, “Oh? You think you have a chance with her?”

“Wai-” you say still shaking Sam’s hand for some reason, her grip tightens and your voice is cut off.

“I didn’t know you were interested in an open relationship, given the two of you are married,” Coraline says somewhat away from the two of you, hands inside her coat.

“I’m fine with it. Though, we weren’t really prepared to start right now.”

“I’ve never been married before,” she says taking out a finished white stem of her lolipop.

“No? You look so pretty, I’m surprised.”

“No, I’m not married,” Coraline repeats.

“A shame, to be sure. Any man would be proud to have you,” Sam continues to egg her on, her stifled laughter growing as does her grip on your hand.

“H-hey, wait a-”

“I’m not sure, I didn’t think Samuel was interested.”

“He seems interested to me.”

“I wouldn’t want to intrude in that kind of relationship,” Coraline says pointing from the pocket of her coat. “Holding hands in public.”

“Ah, well..” she looks to her hand still holding yours and her grip lessens, as a difference face washes over. Before she could hold you any longer, you quickly pull away. Sam turns back to face you with a cruel smile, barely keeping from bursting from laughing “He- he shoots and he misses. Better luck next time, sport.”

“W-Wait a second there, Hold on,” you say holding up your now free arms, “Money, I’m asking how much money do you have, Coraline.”

“Money?”

“Standards. You know, how much can you buy?”

She stares blankly at you before raising a brow, “It wouldn’t be kind if you made me pay on our first time out.”

“See, he’s a cheapskate!”

“Am not! Also, first time out?” You say, turning back to Coraline.

“This is the first time that we have gone somewhere like this together,” she says as a matter of fact.

“No.. that’s not..” You sigh in defeat. “You know what.. we’re wasting time. I’m.. going over here.” you pat the shoulder of Sam before grabbing a market list for yourself. Several of the items on it seem to be just small goods like candy bars and other sweets, they even have a bakery. You scan through the list for what you’re looking for -- Nutri-bars, a cooler box, and a few of the flavored dips for the nutri-bars. Though they mostly taste like flavored chalk, they add some flavor.
>>
>>2797333
(2/2)

As you follow the small neon-like signs to where the nutri-bars are, you do some math. Nutri-bars can serve as a single meal for any average person and each costs about three standards per bar. You have three people who would need to eat three meals per day, each day. Meaning, on a twenty-twenty five day trip, you would need around sixty bars per person, or one hundred and eighty bars in totay for twenty days which totals to five hundred and forty standards. That’s way too much for you to buy by myself.

You sigh as you find the bars, there’s enough from what you can see, but you don’t have enough to pay for all of them. You crouch down to read some of the labels and as you look you see Coraline do the same. She was following me? She edges closer to try to read whatever she thinks you’re reading. A bit too close. Her face is inches away from your own, staring at the labels along with you.

“Can you not?” you say dully.

“I’ve tied many knots.”

“What? That’s..” you sigh.

>Take the amount you need. Even if Sam is buying whatever she is buying, taking more than you need would be better than not taking enough. 540 standards is a lot though and you still want to grab a cooler box too.
>Take only a little less than what you need. Sam probably bought more than we need anyways. A few days less, around 500 standards instead.
>Take only the amount you can pay for yourself. Sam isn’t the most reliable person.

You stand up, straightening yourself before looking over to Coraline who is still crouched over, looking at the labels. “Coraline, I have two hundred and eighty six standards. I don’t have much left, how much do you have, like how much money do you have left? You know money?”

She rises from her crouch and stares at you for a moment, “I know what you mean. You don’t have to ask like that,” she leans forward, closer to your face. “I was joking with you. I have enough standards if you don’t. You’ll take me to Leo, and then you’ll take me to Holliday. I remembered something recently.”

You raise a brow as you watch her unchanging face remain just as close as it was before. “Why Holliday?”

“Can’t say, get what you need. We need to leave soon.”

She seems, different. You don’t think about it much but it’s not something completely out of her character, she’s been acting weird the minute you met her. The monotonous why she talks, the same unchanging face she wears, and that distant smile she carries, all there just something different. “Alright, I guess.”

She leans back and retakes her same stance from before, “Do you need help carrying them?”

“No, I’m good. Go get, Sam, she probably needs some help.”

“Alright,” she says without a second delay and walks toward the section with the meats. You check your display, [11:13] Time’s been passing pretty quickly… Well whatever is with Coraline, it’s not like I can back out of this now. And if I’m not.. You check your display again, opening it and spotting your balance, [540▲] exactly. What the fuck? Did she..not only.. You gawk at the display as it dully glows back at you and fills your head with unending questions. You look over to the alcohol section, lined with brown bottles and cheap kicks. Going to get killed or worse, go insane, with these people in my ship.

You shake your head as you grab a cart from the sides of the aisle and put into your cart five hundred and forty standards worth of nutri-bars and then push it over to find whatever is on the bottom shelf of the hardest hitting drinks. Bitter brew.. Blue Ale.. ah, Vodka, dirt cheap too. You sigh as you put seven bottles into the front of your cart and push it over to one of the counters to wait for Sam and Coraline.

Mere minutes pass before you hear the same familiar voice of Sam as she carts over a half full pile of assorted foods. Coraline appears quietly standing behind her with a large, heavy-looking, glass jar filled with colorfully wrapped lollipops. What the hell.

>”I thought I told you to only buy what was needed. We can’t really keep all of this.”

You know what, not even going to question it. If Sam wants to pay for all that then she’s going to pay for it. I’ll pay for mine with my own.. You look back to Coraline who shifts her weight as if she’s waiting impatiently for something. ..with Coraline’s standards.

“So, are you ready? Got enough nutra-whatever?” Sam says as she scoots her cart closer to the counter and starts to place various packets of assorted meats and veggies. “We should be good for a while, I think… and you bought a lot of.. Well I guess it’s one way.”

“One way for what?” You narrow your eyes as you place your boxes of nutri-bars and the seven vodka bottles on the counter, clattering silently.

“Oh nothing,” Sam says quietly as Coraline places her jar on the counter beside your bottles.

“Is that all?” Coraline asks plainly, sticking her hands back into her pockets.

“Should be everything..” Sam says as she points at the things on the counter and silently mouths the items off. “Yeah.. they had a sale on some of the meats so I think I made off with some good stuff. You find your.. Spartan diet fine?”

“Yeah..” you take some of the nutri-bars off of the counter and place them back into your cart, “since you’re getting so much, I might as well save on buying all of it.”

“Talking about that, you have enough?”

“Yeah..” you exhale looking over the boxes and the bottles. “We need to head to that cybershop, the one where we met Coraline at and pick up some things. Also, Coraline, go get a cooler box. I don’t have any ice or any way to keep the meats from spoiling.”

Coraline slightly nods before walking away to find the ice box and you get closer to Sam, leaning into a whisper, “Did you notice anything weird with Coraline?”

“Weird? No, she seems the same as when we met her.”

“She mentioned something about Holliday.”

“She’s planning a vacation? I’d like to go on a holiday too. Oh! Paradise is supposed to be opening a new attraction, something about birds. I never really liked bir--”

“No, the system Holliday, the one north of Haven. She said that she wants to go there.”

“Oh..” She looks back up to you, “No, she hadn’t said anything about going anywhere. I wonder why she’s saying something now.”

“Maybe one of her brain computer things broke,” you say, pointing to your head, “I don’t know how much she’s got in there.”

“I doubt is much more, she seems already on the edge of being a twenty-fiver.”

“A what?”

“You know, you can’t have more than twenty-five percent of you being cybernetics, after what had happened in the Oberon System..”

“Oberon? Isn’t that a mid world?” You kind of remember the name, maybe in one of the human geography classes you took before certificate classes began, “What happened?”

“No, it’s in the inner periphery, some crazy guy decided to mind control a bunch of cyber users or something like that. Plus the wars with the imperialists.. Probably just a safety measure more than anything at that point. Didn’t you know this?”

“No, I di--”

“It was in the news recently some senators got blown up.. Uhh, David Flinch and John Adaway, Bill fourteen point eighty three was supposed to.. Wait how don’t you know this?”

“I stick to local news, didn’t know any of that happened.”

“Well in any case..” Sam trails off as Coraline approaches with a white metal box carried in front of her. Coraline places the box on top of the counter and Sam looks to you as you nod and press your palm against one of the side panels, letting it read your prints before it opens up into a small screen. A small light glows from the start of the counter and slowly makes its way across the top of the counter, staying lit underneath the groceries. You look over the counter and make sure each item has been okayed and then press your display against the screen and watch as your standards drift to zero. You sight and step back as Sam pays for the rest of the groceries. All in all Sam had bought maybe five days worth of food, while your nutri-bars would cover the rest of the days. You’d rather eat every day than eat well only a few days and go without the rest. Rationing is the worst.

The three of you gather your bagged groceries and place them back into the carts, you watch Coraline carefully as she helps Sam put some of the groceries back into the carts. Whatever is going on in that head of hers, she’d never let it show. Great, now I have this to worry about too.. As you sigh Sam looks back up to you and frowns.

“Well, are you going to help? I did pay for everything!” She says pausing as she places her hands on her hips and smiles before , “--cheapskate.”

“I already placed all of the things I got, most of what you paid for is what you got yourself. Why should I feel guilty about you wasting your own money?” You say leaning against the counter.

“Well..” she rolls her eyes, “Still! You should help, faster we do this, the faster we can get off station.”

You shrug and agree to help place the rest of the groceries into the cart, finishing it with Coraline’s absurd amount of lollipops. You ignore whatever obsession she has with sweets as you start to push your cart out of the store, checking your display again for the directions to the cybernetics shop. Close by. Sam takes lead, knowing where you wanted to go in the first place and goes into the shop by herself.

“This shop doesn’t have what I need,” Coraline says plainly, “Why are we here?”
>>
>>2798780
(3/3)

“It’s not for you,” you say as Sam comes back out as quickly as she went in and waves her display at you before pushing her cart again. Your pocket vibrates softly, checking it shows “Anonymous had sent you a Gift”, two books on cybernetics: “Cybernetics: A Pedantic Guide” and “Taking Steps toward Electric Sheep”. She probably already knew the kind of things you wanted, or she already read these books, whatever the case is you nod in a thanks as you place your display back into your coat. The three of you make you way through the station as your carts jingle as glass and metal lightly tap against their metal cages. The hangar seemed less active as it was when you left, several ships had dusted off and you wanted yours to be the next one. You sigh in relief as you approach your ship and open the hatch, placing the contents of the carts into the ship and climbing in after.

The cooler box is placed on the top of your somewhat cluttered desk and you close your computer as you place more groceries on top. Cabinets filled, and a month of food to last the trip. you think to yourself as you sit cross legged at the desk with Coraline and Sam placing the food and other things they had bought into the cabinets and locker.

“Hey can you you move over for a ‘sec?” You say as you pat Sam’s shoulder, motioning for her to move over to Coraline.

“Sure thing,” She nods and climbs over your lap and slides to Coraline, almost tripping over your crossed legs as you lean back into your bed, trying not to touch her.

“Not exactly.. Not what I meant..” you mumble as you scoot yourself to in front of your desktop screen, shoving some of the bags and other clutter off of the screen before raising it out. You watch as the screen lights up with a blue flash and white lettering before a white screen appears and disappears before displaying the dashboard of your desktop.

“Hey, alright. So while you’re putting things up,” you say as you start to type, searching for the new episode of Bloodhounds. “We need to talk about sleeping arrangements.”

“So soon?” Sam says with a faux-gasp.

You exhale sharply and close your eyes before continuing, “Look, the bed is mine, you two can sleep anywhere.”

“Anywhere?” Coraline pipes up, “I’d think it would be a bit cramped if we all sleep together like that.”

“Anywhere else,” you say, emphasizing the end as you look to the two girls before turning back to your search. “Look, just.. Sleep somewhere else. Once it’s time to sleep, I sleep in my bed. That’s it. I’m not about to sleep on the floor because you want to be pampered, alright?”

“Fine with me, boat captain Sammy,” she says as she leans back to see what you’re looking at, “Oh, you’re looking for some movies and stuff? Get that one movie about that uhh.. That man who found the bugs on that like shadowy planet and he was all like.. ‘You should be more welcoming of guests, roach,’ and was all like boom pow, pow, boom, kablam!”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Sam.”

“I think I’ve seen that one..” Coraline says with a hand placed under her chin. “No.. No, nevermind.”

Raising your brow, you turn back to the search, “Anyways, uhh, I don’t think I can find that one. Uhh, got any more suggestions? Music? Games? I’m trying to find something to keep me..”

You trail off as you turn back to the girls, shaking your head. Sam ignores it and continues to put stuff into the cabinet, “Hmm.. what’s a good movie to watch, oh! Maybe.. Hmm.. Download one of those seasonal packages. They should have a big lot of movies and games and stuff. Oh, and get Yunomi, one of my favorite artists out, she’s really got a voice.”

“Who is ‘Yunomi’,” you say bluntly, “Sounds imperial.”

“Yeah, she’s from uhh.. I think it was one of the closer ones, but she sings really well, I think you’d like her.”

“Fine, here, you’re in charge of downloading some stuff in a little bit while I prep the rest of the flight,” you say as you quickly go down the list of several news outlet bundles, clicking download as you go.

You finish scanning over the smaller stuff before leaning back and stretching a bit as you look over to the two girls who seem to have mostly finished organizing the cabinets with some smaller stuff still laying around the desk including Coraline’s jar of lollipops. “I’m going to need to go outside for a second, do a check on the ship before we head out. Shouldn’t take too long, just need to uhh.. Get past you.”

“Yeah, that’s fine, let me get on the net while you’re out there I’ll..” Sam says as she tries to climb over you again, reaching to the other side, “just..”

Coraline slouches back and moves into the shower a bit to let you past as you push Sam off of you and over to your side letting her plop down in front of the desk before you start to crawl your way out toward the hatch. Pressing an open palm against the button. The hatch releases into the airlock and you climb out from there, allowing yourself to stretch a bit in the open air. You ignore closing the hatch as you look around the back end of the ship. Adam hadn’t built his ship, they might have sabotaged his and he never knew to check the ship. but you remember making this ship with your dad who bought the hull one summer before you graduated with your certificate. You knew the answer to any question about the ship, every small detail, every pipe, wire, and hose, you knew it.

You step back as you look at the extremely small ship, a thrust shuttle is what it’s called. Usually one-man ship compact enough to be light on the wallet and roomy enough for a jump or two. They’re nothing like a shuttle with proper rooms, but they’re probably the most common ship owned. As small as a fighter but with a drive and less armor, speed, and it’s civilian. You take your hand and the cuff of your coat, wiping a small smudge off of the front nose of the ship before getting down on your side to inspect the underside of the ship. Most of the housing for the missive drive is on the underside, most of the systems are on the underside of the ship. You see the two hoses and the three cables connected to the station, pointing out where the atmosphere generator, water, power generator, the four batteries, five coolers for the engines and the missive drive, and the tanks to house the gasses and liquids of the ship.

You take a moment to look at each connection on the opened underside before climbing back up and dusting yourself off from the station floor. Stop at the side of the ship, you check the right side mounted engine which you know the cooler has been acting up since you’ve installed it, even then the rest of the engine is fine with its own heatsinks pre-installed. Worst comes to worse, it will stall out and shut down. Though only an hour of in-system flight until you hit the Oort cloud before you can engage the dive to push into faster-than-light speeds.

Pausing for a moment, you take in the sight of your ship. Nothing out of the ordinary. You climb back into the open hatch and close it tightly before crawling past a sleeping Coraline who had claimed you bed while you were out, and a busy Sam who seemed to be enveloped with whatever she was doing on your desktop display. You push both questions into the back burner before unhooking the headrest of the pilot’s chair and climb into the seat. “Seems ready, going to do a systems check.”

The two girls don’t respond and you start going through the routine check. First, you recycle the air in the airlock, allowing it to vent and vacuum out before filling it with atmos and draining it again. Second, you check the engine startup sequence which starts up as smoothly as you had left with Haven. Lastly you check the electronics and the other minor systems. You lean into one of the on board mics and contact the station dockhands, “All things in check, requesting lift off.”

A few moments pass before you hear a clicking sound as the station decouples your ship from its systems and a somewhat static-y voice cracks through the comms, “Request granted, bay fifteen, second junction, fourth doors. Airlock in ten.”

The ship slowly reacts as the engines flare up and ignite as you begin the launch sequence and begin to hover and shake. The ship felt unsteady but that’s nominal for a ship not meant for in-atmosphere flight. You follow the station’s traffic controller’s commands and find the bay fifteen exit, the station from that point leads you through to the airlocked exit with green blinking guide lights. You lean back as the ship floats into open space, gliding in the void. You give a sigh of relief, you’re out of there and headed into a different kind of hell. A den of lions and snakes, the son of a farmer, the pink-haired blogger, and a forgetful cyborg.

You stretch, reaching your arms out behind you before accidentally poking Sam in her arm, causing her to flinch and slap your hand away. She turns quickly, looking at you before smiling, “oh sorry.. Ah you scared me.”

“No no, I didn’t mean to touch you,” you say, waving off her apology and reaching into your pocket for your display. “No, it’s all good. I’m going to make a call real quick.”

“Oh? Who?”

“Abigaille.”

“Oooh~? fufu.. Who’s Abigaille?”

“She’s the secretary for the guy who interviewed me,” you turn to Sam as you take out the card and start to dial, “Don’t go implying things like that, Sam.”

“Hmmm.. sure..” she says as she waves at you limply, motioning you to turn around. You roll your eyes as you turn back to look through the screens, watching as space drifts by. The other end rings quietly as you wait and watch. It’s not long before the other end starts to crackle and the sound of a voice springs the speakers to life.

“Ah, hello this is Abigaille representing Arcady in the Milo system. How may I help you?” her voice seems dulled out since last time you had spoke with her, you clear your through once before starting yourself.

“I’m uhh.. This is Sam-e-uel- uh, Ward. I’m, Samuel.. Uh.. I was there this morning and you gave me your card.”

“Oh, Hi, Mr. Ward,” she says somewhat picking up her voice, “What would you like to talk about, how may I help you? Do you need any help?

“I wanted to tell you that I’m about to leave the, uh, system. System Milo. I’m headed to Haven right now.”

“Ah, so you’re saying you won’t be able to call back for about a week or so..” her voice drifts away and you can hear distant chatter from who you can assume to be Zachary telling her something before Abigaille returns to the phone, “Listen, I’ll call you back on my personal phone, there's.. Less, um. Just wait a second, alright?”

“O-okay,” you say as the line ends in a sharp static ring.

“You’re really bad at talking over the net,” Sam says as she leans over you, “You sure I wasn’t right?”

“Dead sure and I don’t like talking over the net, better at face to face.”

“Bottling your emotions like that isn’t healthy, Sammy.”

“Ah yeah.. Sur-” your display vibrates silently and you pause to answer it again, “Ah, hello?”

“It’s me,” her voice is a bit out of breath this time, like she ran somewhere, “Sorry, I don’t think we should talk on company-owned lines so just call my personal number -- It’s better that way. So, what did you want to talk abo- oh sh..” a sudden sound of papers fluttering and something metal hitting metal covers her voice, “Ugh, damn it.”

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.. Just dropped my files.. Ahh. Anyway, what was it?”

“I just wanted to call and tell you that I’m leaving the system and that I’m headed back home. Can’t do much with the secured position being locked up.”

“Yeah, I understand that, you know you’re probably smart for trying to not get involved but it’s probably not what you’re thinking. Arcady isn’t an evil corporation, just most of the airheaded bosses and the dumbasses with big chairs talk a lot about doing dumb things. I’m betting whatever happened to those missing girls happened because of that. Big chairs talking to big chairs. It’s probably best if you didn’t get involved, not sure what would happen to you if you did, just wish someone was out there trying.”

>”Ahh.. Damnit. Look, I’m going to Leo. It’s stupid, you’re right, but I need to find out what happened to Adam. I think I can trust you but I.. I don’t know. What all do you know about what happened?”
>”Yeah, real shame what’s happening out there. Companies swallowing people whole left and right. But me? A farmer’s boy? I can’t do anything to stand against titans like that. I wouldn’t even know where to start much less how to start.”
>”I read that the police were going to get involved, maybe if you talked to them you could help save people, I mean it’s a better shot than trying to get me to, you know?”

“Haha.. yeah… It would real dumb of me to go to Leo and not Haven. Me. A farmer’s boy? Haha.. If -- if -- I did, I bet it would stir up a lot of trouble. If someone were to investigate anything happening, or going on, you know? But that someone isn’t me. No, not me,” you say trying to lay it on thick, see if she would pick any of it up.

“Hmph..” She says after a pause, “Of course, no, of course. Not you. Would be best if it was the police, I heard they have a close relationship with the Arcady heads in Leo, even heard that Arcady was funding outside sources to look into this investigation of theirs. If anything it looks like the officials have it locked down, anyone butting it would just be a nuisance, especially if they leaked sensitive information.”

“Exactly what I’m saying. Exactly,” you say, nodding to yourself as you hear a bit of stifled laughter from Abigaille.

“Thank you,” she says finally, “Th-thank you for... agreeing.. Uh, with me that it would just be silly if someone from outside decided to get involved in such a sensitive situation that could or could not expose information to the general public. You know, for the sake of keeping Arcady’s interests.”

“Yeah.. to keep her interests intact,” you pause before lifting your head to see Sam smirking, “Yes, and thank you for.. Uh, helping me today.. And answering my call.”

“Of course, Mr. Ward. I’m here to help, just a quick side note though,” her voice turns quieter, “if someone would have somehow entered the station on Leo, that someone shouldn’t trust anyone they meet. Corporations tend to swallow people whole, bite down and won’t let go. Stay safe Mr. Ward, and have a nice trip. Enjoy Haven.”

“Right, Haven. If you ever want some strawberries, I’m sure I can get you some. Special thanks,” you say before the line ends. You smile to yourself before noticing Sam’s own leering smile. “Whaaat.”

“Keeping her interest intact, there Sammy?”

“Shush.”

“So.. ?”

“So what?”

“So what happened? What did she say?”

>”She said the police and some outside force is working with them, any ideas?”

You narrow your eyes at Sam, watching her, trying to gauge her motives as you scratch your stretched out neck with your head laying against the metal floor of the ship, “She was pretty vague. Something about the Police and an outside organization... also, are you always like this?”

“Like what?” she says, turning from her net activities, and places her hands against the floor of the ship to lean over you. Her pink hair falls in parts, obscuring some of her face as she looks down at you from directly above. “What else did she say?”

“Exactly what I’m talking about, Sam. Are you always like this?”

“No idea what you’re talking about,” she says as she begins to smile, “now tell me, what else she said.”

“Outside organization, police force, and that I shouldn’t trust anyone that works for Arcady,” you say as you get up and turn around in the pilot's chair to face Sam directly, folding your knees into the chair. “Got any ideas?”

“Well I have a few, but not really related. Though.. The outside organization sounds interesting,” she says after giving a small pouting face and returning to the desk’s screen. “I heard some people talking about seeing CITF near Unity-Point, Arcady seems to be fascinated with something there, and since we’re already headed there..”

“Yeah I heard of the CITF thing, didn’t seem likely given it’s a memorial and the UGE saying it’s off limits for the most part. Only people who go there are just passing or doing something they’re not supposed to do. It’s a graveyard either way.”

“Yeah, well we’re headed there anyways. I’m thinking that Arcady has deep pockets, pockets that well up in a few senator’s pockets.. And if a senator wants something they think need protection, they send their friends. CITF is no different. Counter-insurrectionists? They fund terrorists. Same stuff that always happens. Some group out of nowhere shows up and the CITF comes in and ‘protects’ the people.”

“Okay.. so the CITF, any other groups?”

“Well if it’s through Unity-Point, they might be funding one of those salvager gangs out there. Last I heard, Faceless Fin’s Hounds were big in that area. Something something, they found an old ship and are holding up there. Though it might make sense if Arcady funded a smaller group. Maybe..” she scans over whatever website she’s on before turning back to face you, “Calamity Jane’s Gang or Jack Goare’s Innocents, but they seem to be in some other systems. I’m betting it’s Faceless Fin. He was seen talking with someone in Marston a few months back. Might be something, I’m thinking.”

>”What about ‘The Sons’ I heard they’ve been active recently, any idea on them?
>”Who’s Faceless Fin? What is his group?”
>”Calamity Jane? Jack Goare? Who are these guys?”

“Salvager gangs?”

“Yeah.. you never heard of those guys? Out in those kinds of places. They just salvage and turn it for a profit and are usually really territorial if you can believe that.”

“Ah.. so You said Faceless Fin was a big, a uh, big group in Unity? They have a lot of territory out there?”

“Ah, yeah they have a lot there. He’s also a pretty odd character too, apparently they say that he’s an old navy dog who disobeyed his captain. Captain didn’t like it so much so they just chopped up Fin’s face and set him in bars. After a while, he got out and set a full mutiny and stole the captain's ship. They say he’s pretty mean guy, something about marking his men, or whatever,” she says before closing the desktop computer. You check your phone and turn around to see you’re almost nearing the Oort Cloud.

“Ah.. we’re about to not be able to download anything for a while. Get as much as you can now.”

“fu... Why can’t we be on the net when we travel between systems. I never liked that idea, you’re an engineer Samuel, why don’t you make something to fix it, yeah?”

“We’re going faster than light. We’re literally going faster than the fastest thing in the universe.”

“Yeah and? Why can’t I stream any new shows?” She says as she pouts slightly.

“We can’t stream shows because we’re going too fast for anything to reach us. They have the satellites which accelerate data between systems but the data itself cannot be accessed while either thing is in transit. It’s literally impossible..”

“Huahh.. That’s stupid..”

“Eh..” you say before shifting your weight in the chair, “only a few minutes before we pass through the cloud.”

“And what’s with that?”

“What the Oort cloud?”

“Yeah.”

“Well..” you sigh as you see the green light blink on the screen. “It’s because, if you turn on the FTL drive while in system, the planets, asteroids, and all the space dust around would start to get, weird. Oort cloud’s asteroids are pretty far from each other but if you turn on the drive before you pass through it, it could just crush the ship.”

“Oh, that sounds pretty bad..” she whispers as you push forward and engage the drive, the ship shudders and shakes rapidly before it settles under the new pressure before you disengage the engines and allow the drive to push forward.

“Alright, so what about the others..” you say as you lean your head back to see a Sam whose face is too close, making you jump from the chair, almost hitting your head against hers. “GAH, can you not!”

“Whaaa..”

“You know what,” you say as you hold a hand to your forehead, “Geez.. look, what about the others, the Calmly Jone and the Jake gore.”

Calamity Jane and Jack Goare are leaders of two other smaller salvage gangs. Calamity owns a smaller, albeit only in comparison, area to Fin. Mainly she stays near the northern part of the system. Something about the ships or something. She orbits one of the gas planets and the larger rocky planets, though no one lands on any of them. And.. Jack Goare is from a neighboring system. They say he moved in a year ago and then started to fight some of the really small scavenger gangs before he carved a chunk of it for himself. I think most of them stick to fighting themselves since nothing had came out that they’ve attacked any people just flying through, like us,” she says before stretching a bit, touching the ceiling with her hands and arching her back, “ahh.. but I don’t hear much about them. Just started to look into it.”

“And why’s that?”

“Why’s what?”

“Why did you start investigating it? You said that you were wanting to investigate this thing specifically, why here? It’s probably a big story and all but-”

“No, no.. it’s nothing like that,” she says before looking back to the closed screen. “It’s a bit.. Ah.. It’s nothing.. Yeah, I just wanted to get a good story, you know? I’ve been wanting to make my big break, been working at this for oh.. Five years. A story like this will really net me something big, get me noticed, you know?”

>Pry into it, you know something is fishy when you see it. If she’s going to be on your ship for oh twenty days, she better start talking.

“Yeah.. I mean it makes sense,” you say as you climb out of the cockpit. Whatever she’s talking about is her business. Shouldn’t pry, even if I want to. “What all did you get from the store anyways? I think it’s almost lunch.”

“Huh?” she says as you get closer to the desk, sitting near her. She shakes from whatever she was thinking about as you sit down beside her. “Oh.. oh? OH! ..Oh yeah, the store. Yeah, I just got some normal things I used to make with my sisters, I’m not really the best cook, Su- ahm, Sue was better than me. Always was, she would make these wonderful dumplings for all of us and after she’d make some really good little cakes for us. Something I’ve been craving is one of her little cheesecakes. They’re really rich. You’d love them, hey you can probably have one once you meet her, she’s really nice too.”

“Ah, I’ll look forward to it then,” you say as Sam turns away to open one of the cabinets.

“Yeah, Sue really is a great cook. I have a few recipes I brought from home, you’ll probably like them but I’m not nearly as good as my sisters,” she says as she continues to rummage around in the cabinet.

“Yeah? How many sisters do you have?”

“Well,” she pauses as she turns back with a hand on her chin, still leaning against the desk, “there’s Sue, Hana, Sara, and Yu-uh-m..”

“Yu-uh-m?”

“No, her name’s Yum..” she says quietly

“So you have four sisters?” You say as you place an elbow onto the bed where Coraline isn’t. “I have two brothers.”

“Yeah, Ben and uh, Harrison!” she says as she jumps back up, though you guess she read the confusion on your face as her shoulders droop, “Am I wrong?”

“No, no.. I’m just a bit surprised you remembered that.”

“Of course,” she says before turning back, “Ah ha!”

She turns back with a two small cup, handing you one and keeping one for herself. The cup’s written in whatever language the imperialists use and a small plastic fork is taped to the side. “What’s this?”

“Instant noodles!” she says before she takes the dangling string from the bottom of the cup and pulls it. She then quickly places it down onto the desk and lets it sit before looking back to you expectantly.

“Uhh..” you say mindlessly as you look at the cup and turn it in your hands. You take the string and pull. Suddenly a warmth washes over your hands, forcing you to set the cup near hers. “What the hell?”

“Cool, huh? They come in a few flavors but I got mainly shrimp flavor, one of my personal favorites.”

“Yeah..”

>”So, tell me about your sisters, Sue is good at cooking?”
>”Can you read this stuff? I know you’re from a border world, do you get a lot of people from the imperialists over there?”

Ward?”

“So, four sisters? Must be hell. I never had a sister though, only my two brothers and they’re pretty much ass hats the whole time,” you say, moving and arm out in a sweeping motion.

“Haha,” Sam laughs quietly before stifling it, “No, they’re not bad at all. They’re by far my favorite people to be around. I grew up with just them with Hana being the oldest, she had spent most of the time at work trying to earn enough to help take care of us along with Sue who is the second oldest. Sara and Yum are two years younger than me, twins, my mom had them before she had to leave and go off world.”

“So it was just you five then.. What about your dad?”

“Ohh.. I- I never met him,” she says turning away to look at the two cups that sit side by side, you’re not sure but you think you can see her faintly smile from between the openings between her hair. “But.. didn’t you say something about your dad? You said he was a.. Citrus farmer?”

“Yeah, he was the one who helped me build this thing here,” you say opening your arms up, motioning in no particular direction.

“Oh wow, so you two were close?”

“Yeah, well.. when he was around, yeah. He went to the station or to one of the council meetings on Haven. He was pretty busy for the most part but when he was around he really helped. I stayed for a few years after my certificate so I could help around on the farm and help Ben with his school.”

“Yeah, he’s graduating in a few months, right?”

“Yeah.. I’m really surprised you remember that.”

“Oh, I mean.. It’s only been a day, if I didn’t remember that why would I be a journalist --er well a blogger.”

“You don’t talk a whole lot about personal things but get me talking, probably the reason why you’re a journalist too?”

“No, I just like talking, but I guess you’re right.”

“Ahh, sure,” you say as you look back to the noodle cups, “You said home was just you five?”

“Yeah,” she says as she reaches out and pokes one of the cups, “they’re probably ready by now.”

“Ah, thanks,” you say as Sam turns back to you, handing you one.

“No problem, and Yeah. It was just the five of us. Sue and Hana would work most of the time and when Sue got home she would cook the rest of the day before Hana got back from her second job. I was a little older than Sara and Yum, so I would help them out with their school work. Not saying I’m great or anything..” she tapers off as she opens the top lid of her cup and steam rolls from the insides filling the cabin with a smell of shrimp and other spices, “but I would help when I could. Most of the trouble they would have was with things like history or.. Math, I was never good at math.. but I would always help them with their language studies.”
>>
>>2800693
“Ah.. language studies?” you say as you follow her, opening the still steaming hot cup and let it air.

“Yeah, we learned english and imperial in the classes, something about something something.. But it was pretty interesting few classes. Always liked english the most though…”

“Yeah, I never really liked english, writing papers is a bore. I was always good at math though. Always had better grades in that.. Oh how old are you? You said something about being a journalist for five years or something?”

She looks from her half eaten fork of noodles to you with a flat face as she narrows her eyes. “You’re not supposed to ask a lady a question like that. Never a lady how old she is.”

“Oh, I was just asking since.. Ah, well anyways, I’m twenty,” you say before taking a fork full of noodles and eating some yourself.

“Ah.. well..” she trails off before taking another bite of noodles before she speaks back up in almost a whisper, ” eighteen.”

“Oh?” You say looking from your noodles, “Eighteen, so you got out of school two years ago, meaning that you were.. What working at being a journalist since the age of thirteen?”

“Don’t laugh,” she says, pointing her fork menacingly at you while you hold your arms up in protest, “it’s hard enough finding a job that would help pay at that age.. And that you like..”

“Ah, no, I’m not laughing. Surprised. I’ve been working myself since I could walk, mostly helping my dad with whatever on the farm and since the age of twelve I’ve been working in and out of small shops.”

“Child labor?”

“Nah, just small town. Small population, small workers,” you say with an careless shrug.

“Ah, yeah..” she says before returning to her cup of noodles. The two of you take a moment, pausing, to enjoy the smell of instant noodles, indulging in the ambient aroma of dollar store cuisine. You sigh as you lean back into the bed, laying your head against the soft part as you slide your legs under the desk, meeting Sam’s own. You look to Sam and your face reddens slightly before looking away and slightly scooting away from her. Panicking, you look for another conversation, something she probably knows, something.. you remember from Abigaille and the interview -- a name. Maybe Sam Knows?
“So, uhhmm.. Do you know anyone by the name of Miss Bordeleaux?” your voice hangs idly as Sam stares back at you, blinking twice as her face turns a different shade as she holds onto her cup of noodles tightly before dropping them entirely. Spilling the remainder of cup’s contents across the floor and on the desk.

“Oh shi-”

“Here, let me get a towel,” you say as you set down your cup to your side and reach into the cabinet above you, “Are you okay? Did..”

“No.. no..” she says as she wipes the wet noodles off of her hands and a soaked pair of pants, “go- gomen.”

“What? Here,” you say as you take the towel from the cabinet and start to soak up the still warm water, “did you burn yourself?”

“No..”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah..”

“Geez.. look, go get some clean clothes on and take a shower, I’ll clean this up,” you offer, wiping off the spilled noodles, before looking back at Sam who seems a bit shocked, “Are you okay? Did I say something weird?”

“No.. I’m fine. I’ll go take a shower then..” she replies before turning around and opening the shower door.

“Don’t forget your clothes.”

“Oh right,” she says as she crawls back out of the shower and opens the locker door, quickly grabbing several clothes before returning to the shower. A few minutes pass of silence as you clean the floor from whatever reaction that was before a head pops out of the shower door, “Go- Gomen.”

“Huh?” you say looking back to the shower and see Sam’s hair retreat back with a close of the shower door. “Did you say something?”

You hear nothing in return as water begins to flow, although you would expect her to make a noise or something she didn’t so you shake your head and return to cleaning the floor and desk. Does she know whoever Miss Bordeleaux. Is she Miss Bordeleaux? Why did she react so.. oddly to that? you think to yourself as you clean the rest of the noodle-juice with the now soaked towel and then place it into the washer above the bed. You sigh as you finish and look around the cabin. Sam’s been in there for a little while.. maybe I should knock on the door and see if she’s alright.

>Check on Sam, whatever it is she seemed off. Whatever it is it probably shouldn’t have made her react like that. It’s probably important too.
>Open up the desk display, whatever got her bothered she can stay in the shower for however she likes. Might as well do something else.
>Check on the flight path and keep yourself busy with whatever for now. Maybe read one of the books you Sam sent you.

You massage your forehead and the bridge of your nose with your hand as you think. Sam’s reaction wasn’t something I was expecting. She seems.. touchy at best with whoever or whatever Miss Bordeleaux is. Probably knows them if she isn’t them herself. Whatever your suspicions are, you can’t know for sure, not unless you ask her yourself. You scoot across the now clean metal floor of the ship to in front of the shower door. You look over to see the curled up form of Coraline, too absorbed and deep into her sleep to have even stirred from the comotion. Shaking you head --because what you’re about to do is probably stupid-- you knock on the door. A quiet ‘eep’ and some splashing of water before the shower stops and a quiet voice starts to mumble just out of your hearing.

“A- are you okay in there?’ your words stand still for moments before the sounds of rustling and water splashing break the silence. “Are you.. Okay?”

“I..” her voice pauses, though audible now, as she continues to put on clothes. Before too long she finally breaks the silence and the rustling of clothes with another quiet and short sentence, “I’m fine.”

“Are you really? What was that all about anyways, you spilled all of you food..”

“Well it’s your fault!” she retorts.

How is it my fault you reacted like that,” you deny.

“Well..” she pauses before opening the door, her clothes wet and sticking to her as her hair, still soaked, clings together in clumps of now dark pink. Steam ripples like waves from the inside of the shower as it escapes and fills the cabin with a thin fog, obscuring the mirror behind her. “You caught me off guard. I’m sorry, alright?”

“Catching you off guard? That’s a big difference from staring at me for a few minutes and then spilling everything out of your cup,” you say as you lean back onto the locker door. “Who is Miss Bordeleaux? Are you her or do you know her?”

“No!” she says quickly, face scrunched. “I don’t know anyone by that name.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive, now move so I can go.”

“Well, Coraline believes she knows someone by that name, should we ask her?”

“Wha..” she says as her face turns even more red than before she got out of the hot shower. She pauses for a moment before closing the shower door. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

>”Alright, I’ll just talk with Coraline then.”
>”Ah.. Alright alright. Fine, don’t talk about it. When you want to, you’ll know where to find me.”

“Oh… Come on..” you plead, resting your head against the shower door.

“No!” she replies loudly though muffled from behind the door, “I said I don’t want to talk about it. It’s not something that should be a problem anyways. It’s a twenty day trip all the way to Leo and I’d rather it not be another trip like last time.”

You sigh, letting your shoulders droop as you press your head against the door knowing fully well she already locked it. “Look,” you pause, “Do you trust me? I trust you.”

You hear a sigh from behind the door before it opens with you sitting back up straight attempting not to fall into the shower after her, “I trust you.”

“They why won’t you tell me what’s going on.”

“I just don’t know you.”

“I’m an open book,” You say as you move away from the shower door, allowing her to climb out, “Look, you trusted me enough to travel with me to Leo, either way a month’s trip, you better trust me enough to not lie to me. I trusted you enough to travel with me to Leo after only meeting you in a bar.”

“I’m sorry.. ,” she says as she crawls out of the shower, leaving her other clothes inside, “Trusting people has nothing to do with this.”

“Whatever it is that’s bothering you, don’t you think I could help?”

She sighs as you finish, crawling toward you, “Let me pass.”

“Sure,” you say as you angle yourself, allowing Sam you move around you, “All I’m saying is, don’t you think I could help?”

She continues on her way, almost ignoring your words as they hang idle as she crawls into the pilot’s seat. A moment passes before she turns back around, eyeing you from behind the headrest of the chair. “Some people..” she just barely whispers, almost inaudible. “Some people have secrets worth keeping. Not everyone is an open book to read and write in. This isn’t something that you should really get yourself involved in.”

>”Really? I’m about to go to Leo, probably get killed, but I’m still going to try to look for answers about what the hell is going on.. If it’s anything related, let me help.”
>”Not something I should get involved in? I got involved the first time I met you. Come on, I’m at least entitled to know something about you. You owe me that at least.”
>”Fine, if you don’t want to tell me, then you don’t have to. Keep your secrets, I won’t pry anymore.”

“Fine.”

“Fine,” she says before turning around, sliding deeper into her chair.

“To not get involved? Not something I should get involved with?,” you say as you move yourself over to the desk, noticing you still having finished the noodle cup. You lean against the bed, propping yourself up with an elbow and an open palm. “That’s a bit too late for that, Sam.”

She doesn’t answer, too absorbed in thoughts or worries to answer. She just sits there, silently hiding away from your gaze, as if she was a kid being chewed out for getting something wrong or messing something up. You watch as she fidgets before she plants her face between her knees as she hugs them to her chest.

You exhale before sitting back up and grabbing the cup of noodles that are still warm from earlier, “Look. You don’t have to tell me your secrets. I can understand the need for privacy, I won’t pry. Alright?”

She remains stoically and uncharacteristically silent as you continue. You sigh in defeat before taking a moment and looking at the warm cup of noodles. Home. you think to yourself. You’ve never had anything like this, but she was so familiar with it. A second language of fine arts and the complexities of diversity -- an entirely different place from where you grew up, yet it was still a home. Her home. The only thing she talked about was that. Whatever it is she is conflicted with, it’s probably to do with home. You knew home to be your mom and your brothers. Home was a field underneath a setting orange star that lit the sky on fire and danced as if to taunt you. Home was your family. Home was a feeling -- it is a feeling. One of safety and security. Little obligations yet work still had to be done, but even if it was work, it was working at home.

The two of you though? The two of you were far from home, from safety, from warm food and close friends. You were with strangers, strangers from strange places that you’ll never see. Dazed by things you’ve never know, confused by things you never thought of, and tired of drifting.

“Sam,” you break the silence, almost without intention as it knocks you from your own stupor. “Look..”

“I’m sorry,” she says, muffled from underneath herself. You take a moment to think on the words, to chew them as you wait. “I don’t mean to be rude, Samuel. I just..”

“No,” you pause, cutting off her words, “No.. you don’t have to explain. It’s not my place to pry. Your secrets are yours..”

“No,” she says looking back up from her chair, no longer hiding. “No. I was rude, and.. and I shouldn’t have acted that way. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize, like you said it’s my fault.”

“No it’s not. I should have..” her words fade as she breathes deeply, exhaling slowly as she gathers her words. “I shouldn’t have told you the lie. But since you know anyways.. I was just..”

“Naomi..” you mouth the words as you think back, “ Boredleaux? Well.. I had a feeling it was you, but I wasn’t really expecting… um, wait. Hold up, so you’re saying you’re Miss Boredleaux?”

“Well, yeah,” she says from behind the headrest.

“I mean.. Well why didn’t you show up to the interview? You did arrive, after all.”

“Well. So, you know how you said you say me arguing with that other guy, right?”

“Yeah..” you reply.

“Well, he was supposed to take me from Montaway to Milo, he said he had some dealing or something there. But after we left Glass, something about his crew talking about some malfunctions in the engines and that there were some shady people skulking around the ship earlier so we stopped midway. Jenson, the engineer on that ship, said that it would take a day or so, saying that the engine was acting funny. Whitney said that she didn’t believe him and all of this wasn’t really worth the time since a whole day would push back their shipment to Milo. They were carrying some cybernetics from the borderworlds and selling it deeper into UGE space and--”

“What.. what does this have to do--”

“So for a day or so we had connection to the net. On the net I was looking to connected back to my editor and my publisher, Greg and Samantha, which is where I got the name Sam from. And don’t worry I told them that my name was Sam too, the ones on the ship not the..” she looks at your face, noticing your raised brow and look of confusion, “So anyway, I got into contact with Greg, he told me that something else was going on. Another incident happened at Leo. And so I told the captain, the guy I was arguing with earlier, that I changed my mind and I was going to Leo. He didn’t like that at all. He said he would only go to Milo and that they were heading back to Montaway. Since Leo is basically owned by Arcady and they have so much there he said the profits he would get would be less than just some dinky single-station port.”

“So you didn’t show up to the interview because..”

“Well because there was a new incident, the one Greg told me about.”

“So.. well why did you tell me your name was Sam?”

“There’s.. Well..”

“Well what?”

“Well… I’m.. well.. I just didn’t think,” she pauses looking down before she looks back up to you, “Like I said. Not everyone is an open book, but.. I said my name. Can we just start over?”

You sigh as you sit up, reaching into the cabinet. As your hand finds purchase on cheap, thick, plastic while your other hand reaches under the desk to take out two small glass cups. You place the cheap dollar store vodka on the desk as the two shot glasses cling together before you seperate them. You take a moment to untwist the plastic seal before pouring the clear strong smelling alcohol into the two glasses. “Alright.”

You hand one shot glass to Sa- no, Naomi, watching as she clasps the cup with both hands and drawing it close. Leaning back, you raise the small cup in a faux toast toward Naomi, “Nice to meet you, Naomi.”

She smiles her wide smile before raising her own glass in the air, you then take the glass and drink. “-akhem,” you cough as you watch Naomi have a worse time, going into a coughing fit as the warm, strong, and horrible liquid burns down the side of your throat. “Shit’s good?”

She nods her head as she hands you back the cup, wiping her face off with the sleeve of her other hand, “Good to finally meet you, Samuel.”

A smile of your own crawls from one side to the other before you pour her another glass of the cheap vodka, taking another shot of your own. Just as violently burning as the first, taking you a long moment before you return to Naomi’s face. “So Sam, what all did you download?”

“Uh..” she says as she hands you back the glass, “a lot of classics that I loved to watch as a kid, some of the new movie packages -- don’t worry I used my own cash -- and some tv shows that I’ve been watching a lot of lately.”

“Oh, uh, have you watched Bloodhounds before? It’s probably one of my all time favorites. I bet you’d like it, Sam. It’s about a detective who goes around investigating a lot of these really weird murder mystery cases, but it’s not like a really dry show since it’s a lot to do about the action and uh, such..”

“Oh!” she exclaims, “I love Bloodhounds! I started watching it on the flights over here, thinking that it was just some weird show about whatever but I really liked how at the end of the first episode was really crazy. I didn’t expect it to switch gears like that so fast.”

“Yeah, here I downloaded the newest episode, are you caught up with all of it?” You say as you get closer to the desk screen and start searching to find the episode you downloaded. “They say it’s supposed to get real real intense.”

“I watched the entire show on the way here, really hooks to in after that first episode. Didn’t really like season two all that much since they started to introduce that vampire arc or whatever, I mean it doesn’t really seem logical to jump genres like that.. But.. this new season is really good,” she says as she climbs back over the chair and finds a seat next to you, you hand her another shot of vodka from under your arm as you type out in the search bar.

“Ah there it is,” you say, opening the episode and leaning back, bringing the bottle of vodka and your glass with you. “So, Sam, you like the vodka? I thought it would be pretty smart to bring along since you know.. Long trip and being stuck in here with the two of you is probably hell without drinking, haha..”

“No, it’s great.. But why do you keep calling me Sam?”

“Oh, sorry, am I? I didn’t notice.. I just got used to calling you Sam I guess.. Sorry,” you say as you take another sip, this time it goes down less aggressively but it still burns to high heaven. “Naomi I mean..”

“No, I’m sorry, really,” she says as she leans against you, though the screen is pretty small and the ship itself is even smaller, you still let it make you smile. You pour some more vodka before looking at the bottle which you’ve barely made a dent into the clear liquid. She looks at you as you’re doing this, “You seem to be able to drink it just fine, I can’t stand that.. That burning.”
>>
>>2802885
“Oh really? It’s not that bad. Have you drank before?”

“Y- yeah.. but nothing like this..”

“Really? What was the first thing you had?”

“Well is was some wine at my sister’s wedding when I was sixteen.”

You smile and give a short laugh, “So what you’re telling me is that you’ve never really drank before? To think that cheap vodka is your first real drink. Real shame.”

“H- how long have you.. I mean when was the first time you had drank anything like that?”

“Well I was fourteen when my brother handed me a smaaaall,” you say as you show the size with your right hand, “small thing of jaeger that was nearly empty before he left planet. He told me to drink the whole thing before he returned and when he did he’d get me some more. Never showed back up but that night I drank the whole thing. Not really smart considering I was so young but it wasn’t much at all. The first time I really got drunk was probably.. Ah my girlfriend at the time, Jessica, just dumped me and it was one of my friends birthdays. I was sixteen and I drank probably enough to drop but I didn’t and the morning after I just felt like shit. Had to have four of my friends carry me out and bring me back home, couldn’t look my father in the eye the whole day though.”

“Jessica..?”

“She dumped me right after we graduated, not much to say but we dated for about four years.”

“Wow.. f-four years?”

“Yeah..” you say looking back to your empty glass, frowning. You pour yourself another glass and pour Naomi some more as she offers you her own glass. “What about you?”

“Huh?” she says as the beginning of Bloodhounds starts to play. That melodic theme lightly playing as some of the heavier percussions and strings take the foreground.

“Any relationships? You dated before, right?”

“Well.. yeah,” she says pausing before taking a small sip, “It was a while ago though and kinda embarrassing.. “

“Oh really?” you say edging her on. You’re not sure if the alcohol already kicked in but you’re not much for drinking a lot and the vodka doesn’t seem to burn as much as it did in the beginning. “How did that go?”

“Poorly as you.. would expect,” you’re not sure if the alcohol kicked in for her either, though you’re pretty sure it’s her first time drinking anything she’s still handling it pretty well considering she stopped coughing every time she took a sip. Though.. “It wasn’t like really even dating I would say, it was more like, like a day. A day of about uh, mainly just we would write each other notes. Small things like that. He was an imperial. Is. Well, was.. or something. He looked imperial at least.”

You definitely caught it that time, you yourself is starting to feel it as you look back to the slightly more than half full bottle of cheap vodka. Cheap, but not weak. You take note of the distiller, some big bottler near the edge of the midworlds you’d guess. The show already started before you notice. Bright, really bright colors and really loud but awfully dull since it doesn’t seem to affect you like it would normally. “What about the imperial boy? When did you.. Did you start dating him?”

You own words seem unsteady but her words are shaky at best as she continues to lean against you, hugging against your left arm you’re using as support as your back leans against the bed. “Well it, it was a while ago. Like I said. He was imperial, and uh, we only gave each other notes.”

“Yeah, but, but when was, when were you, when did you start?” you slur, finding your words harder than you would have guessed. The show seems distant and small, though the screen was always small, just smaller.

“I was like, like, like I was pretty young. We were in the.. George!” she suddenly shouts, “that was his name!”

“Ah, right, right. I knew a George. He was a pretty cool guy. Though I never really saw him or talked to h- him. He was alright, but damn. I really miss home. Kinda been thinking about it. It's just stupid. I want to get back and go to sleep in a normal bed, f- for once. I won- wonder how Ben’s doing or mom. Man I’m really craving one of those little green pie looking things, you know it’s like a pie but really small and not sweet but like filled with cheese and spinach and,” you look back to Naomi, her face several darker shades of red with streaks of tears running down her face. She just looks at you as she cries, you’re not sure why she’s crying or when she started -- only that she is. Her mouth, open slightly with no words or sounds reaching out before a wail as she grabs you closer and hugs you tight, clinging to you. Oh shit, is she a sad drunk? She’s usually so happy. is the last thought before your mind blanks out.

You blink slowly, warmth covering you with a constant ringing throughout your ears and your head throbbing as if you hit it against the floor multiple times. The blinding light of the ambient lighting from the ship buzzes loudly as you blink, trying to get adjusted to it. You’re in your bed, for one. Though you’re not sure how you got in, you look over to your left and see Coraline sitting in front of the desk watching something as the screen glows dully and the sounds come quietly with every now and then being pierced with a sudden shriek of laughter. You’re really warm as if someone put a second blanket across you while you were asleep.

Looking down you can see your feet underneath the cover of the thick blanket as well as the feeling of someone clinging to you on your right, warm breath slowly and rhythmically hitting your neck. Well Coraline is watching something and.. You look to your right to see Naomi squished against you, nearly on top of you as her back faces the wall of the bunk. Shock, horror, an odd sense of pride, and fear hit your mind simultaneously as you struggle to unlatch yourself from Naomi. You quickly open the blanket a bit on your left side and sigh in relief to see all your clothes are still on and look to Coraline as you push Naomi off of you.

>”What the hell happened?” She probably has something to do with this, if she doesn’t then you’d be surprised.

You slowly slide away from Naomi, pushing her leg and arm off from on top of you allowing her to settle as you push her head off from your chest and onto your pillow. Your headache is pounding against the inside of your skull, as if someone was just starting their amature drumming career and decided to start a live-in and room with your brain. You hold onto your head as you slowly rise out of the bed, allowing the bedsheets to fall to the side.

“Cor--” your own voice irritates you as you try to speak normally, pausing before you continue in a hushed tone, “Coraline, what the hell happened?”

She slowly turns to you, staring at you for a moment before finally speaking in the same monotonous tone, “You fell asleep,” she says plainly before returning to the screen, entirely absorbed in whatever show or movie she’s watching. That reminds you that you didn’t even finish watching Bloodhounds, much less even remember what the episode was about.

“That’s-- agh, -- that’s not what I meant. What happened with me and, uh, Sam?”

“She told me to call her Naomi from now on,” she says without turning to face you.

“Yeah, Naomi, what happened between us, I don’t remember-- agh -- I don’t remember much from last night.. Or.. before I woke up.”

“Naomi woke me and told me to move over so I did but then she told me that I moved over the wrong way so I moved the other wa--”

“Get to the point. How did I end -- end up in the bed with Naomi?”

“Well she told me to put you on the bed and then she went to sleep on top of you. So I started to watch whatever you were watching.”

“Did she say.. anything.. else?”

“She said this show is really ‘god’ but I’m not sure if I should worship it yet.”

“No I mean, did she say anything about me?”

“She said you fell asleep when she pushed you over.”

Fell asleep? you think as you rub the back your head, still aching. Wait a second, did she knock me out? You continue to rub the sore spot on the side of your head. Piss drunk in under an hour and accidentally got knocked out. Great. At least I remember most of it before I blacked out, not sure if sa- Naomi still remembers any of it but.. she has that amazing memory of hers. Your thoughts drift as you look to the shower, something to wake you up quick and make you feel at least a modicum of relief. “H- hey can you get something and uh, make it for the three of us?”

“Sure,” her non committal answer hangs as you open the locker to retrieve something comfortable, a pair of loose sweatpants, a tee, and some clean boxers, at least something that isn’t dress wear. You crawl into the shower and place everything behind the plastic bag and close the door behind you before you strip down. You use the toilet before turn the water on, waiting for the rush of a frozen blizzard and brace before the wave crashes, shocking your very core. Fucking COLD.. perfect. Your eyes widen as you’re barely able to reach the soap and shampoo as you shiver as your rigid movements slowly make its way over your body.

You can’t think, not in this cold, you don’t really mind the cold or at least you thought it would be much worse as it’s still frigid and beyond uncomfortable. You can’t stop shaking as you slowly turn the water off, allowing yourself a moment as the water drips harmlessly off your shivering body. You take a towel and briskly rub it against you trying to wipe off any and all remnants of the torture you put yourself through just now. Though you can’t say it didn’t work as your feeling better, if only slightly as you put your clothes back on and poke your head out.

You watch as Coraline sits static, absorbed into whatever she’s watching and Sa- Naomi still asleep on your bed, hugging the pillow closely as she’s now wrapped herself around it like she did you. Though you’re sure you asked.. oh wait, you spot three blocks of nutri-bars sitting next to Coraline as you crawl out of the shower now fully dressed.

>Drink a lot of water, eat some food. Relax.
>Wake up Naomi and get her to drink a lot of water, her first time getting drunk and it’s going to be her first time getting a hangover.

You run your head with the semi-wet towel before placing it into the wash, forgetting you already had a towel in there and just stuff it in anyway. Naomi’s clothes from last night weren’t in the shower so she must have already place them back into her bag, probably didn’t want you to touch them even if she got all touchy-feely when drunk -- or rather absolutely plastered. You take one of the bars that sit next to Coraline, with her mechanical legs tucked under her. She’s still wearing that same outfit you met her in, though it’s not like she smells bad or anything, though you’re pretty sure she hasn’t taken a shower since.

You interrupt your thinking as you open one of the sides of the bar and examine the chalky substance of purely everything you need for the morning. Protein, all of the required vitamins, any and all nutrients.. or so it says on the side of the wrapper and packaging. You rummage around in the cabinet above Coraline before finding a small glass, not unlike the kind you used last night and place it down on the desk before turning to Coraline, “Have you ever drank?”

“I tend to drink every day,” she says offhandedly, not paying much attention to whatever you’re doing.

“No I mean, alcohol, vodka, beer, ale, anything?”

“I don’t think so,” her voice remaining spartan of any noticable inflexion or vocal movement.

“What do you mean?”

“Hm? I don’t think I drink alcohol,” she says as she turns back to you, slowly as she narrows her eyes at you then the glass on the desk, “Did you--”

“No, no, that’s for some water,” you interrupt before taking the glass and your bar as you go into where the shower is at. Looking at the mirror, you press the side and a small sink ejects from the wall, with a faucet flat before opening itself up at an angle. You place your glass underneath the faucet head and turn the head, filling your glass to nearly full before drinking it all and repeating this several times.

As you close the shower doors you see Coraline has finished her show and decided to start eating, taking the bar in both hands. You approach and lean against the bed, stretching your legs into the desk’s cubby hole allowing your legs to at least feel some sort of freedom outside of the bed.

“So, Naomi’s apparently eighteen,” you saw between small bites of the bar.

“Yes.”

“I’m twenty, though I guess you knew that from that eye scan thing you did earlier…”

“Yeah,” she says before taking a large bite of the bar, chewing on it for long while.

“How.. how old are you?”

“Not sure,” she says after a moment of struggling to swallow the chalky bar and with your help of handing her the glass of water.

“How can you not be sure?” That seems like an odd thing to not be sure about, how can you not be sure how old you are? Is it whatever she has in her brain, the one for the medicine she probably has to have, messing up? “Can’t you look yourself up in the.. whatever your eyes can do?”

“No I can’t.”

“Why?”

“I’m not connected to the net.”

“Well how are you not sure of your own age? I mean, I’m pretty sure of my own age. I’m twenty, born in three-three-ten, fifteenth of August.”

“I know,” she says flatly as if to ignore the rest of your statement.

“Well?”

“I don’t remember when I was born.”

“Do you know what year?”

“No.”

“How the hell do you not know the year of your own birthday?”

“I just don’t,” she says taking another bite, this time much smaller than the previous one. She chews slowly and methodically, as if to be careful to not repeat what had happened. Her face seems slightly more intense, though you could me imagining it being so as it hasn’t changed much. You exhale before taking your own equally small bite, letting the chalk rest and settle into your mouth, melting slightly before continuing to chew. She doesn’t seem to be all there, or at least that’s what you’re starting to believe. Whatever it is she se-- “I know the day I woke up, but not when I was born.”
