"You know her best." you say. "What do you remember of her?"

Cel scratches the back of his head. "Eh, not much...She has an older brother and her parents. We kinda lost touch after junior high."

You run off to class, mulling over how you'll find the root of Rebecca's Nightmare.

You sit through class, thoughts about sleep, dreams, and Personas in the back of your mind. You almost don't hear Mrs. Wilson call on you in third period World History.

"Phil, can you tell us which Catholic Pope began his reign in the year 654?"

After a bit of talking around, you get something you can work off of: Rebecca started acting withdrawn and timid about four years ago. She never said why, but that went on for two years, and started again just before school started back up.

Cel drives to Rebecca's house. You see flowers and fruit baskets littering the front steps. Cel looks at it in disbelief. "Jesus, it's like people think she's already dead." he says quietly.

You knock on the door, and the door opens to reveal a tired looking moustachioed man. "Can I help you?"

"We're friends of Rebecca. May we talk to you for a little while?" you ask. Rebecca's dad sighs. "I guess..." he says.

You follow her dad into the house, where you see a young man... about college age. "Oh, you friends of Rebecca?" asks the man. "A lot of you coming to visit...I'm Lucas, Rebecca's older brother."
"I've met you," says Cel. "Remember me? Marcellus?"

Lucas blinks before his eyes light up with recognition. "Oh, wow, haven't seen you in a while." he says.

Rebecca's dad clears his throat. "So, what did you want to talk about?"

You notice something: the minute you say the words 'four years ago', Lucas subtly shifts his posture to a more guarded stance. "Four years ago?" repeats Rebecca's father. "I'm not sure what you mean...I mean, I guess she was a little moody for a while, but I didn't think much of it...."

Rebecca's father stands up. "Excuse me, I need to check on my pot roast, I'll be right back if you have more questions." He exits the room, and Lucas goes upstairs- to his own room, you presume.

After a minute, Rebecca's dad re-enters the living room, the smell of seasoned pot roast faintly lingering in the air. It actually makes you feel a little hungry. Perhaps making food is how Rebecca's dad copes.

"Any other questions?" he asks.

"When did Lucas go off to college?" you ask. "About two years ago," says Rebecca's dad. "He wanted to get a degree in Industrial Design- designing factories and that stuff...but, he said he couldn't afford to live on campus with his job so he moved back in about two weeks ago."

"Did Lucas and Rebecca not get along?" you ask. Rebecca's dad looks at you with confusion. "Where did you get an idea like that? Lucas adores Rebecca- he's been worried sick ever since Rebecca got hospitalized."

You begin to think over what you've learned. Rebecca's changes in behavior seem to coincide with Lucas leaving and returning to her home.

After about a half hour, you say goodbye and leave.

You pull out your phone. "I'm gonna see what his social media looks like..." you say, looking for Lucas on your search engine of choice. After misspelling the last name once or twice, you finally find a Beeper (OOC: non-copyright stand-in for Twitter :P) page. Pretty typical stuff: livebeeps about sports, rebeeping friends...but as you scroll down, you see someone named Nina who left a reply: 'why don't you call back'.

You click the replier's profile image and stare at it. She looks...familiar. No, not familiar. Similar.

She looks a lot like Rebecca.

You begin scrolling through Nina's pictures and see pictures of her at a bar with Lucas. They're both smiling, but Lucas' eyes tell a different story. He looks bored, uninterested in the girl he's with.

You go back to when Nina beeped Lucas why he wouldn't call her: it's dated back to about two weeks ago.

You're starting to get a picture of what's going on, and it makes your skin crawl.

You show Cel what you found. He stares at it. "Okay..." he says, sounding like he's not getting it. "He ghosted some girl. So what?"

>"Cel, think about it: Four years ago, Rebecca starts acting weird. It stops when Lucas leaves for college. He starts dating a girl that looks like Rebecca, but he doesn't seem to care about her. Lucas comes back, and Rebecca's acting weird again."

This is pretty fucked up. I'm guessing he raped her or tried to rape her. I want to confront Lucas but it'd be pretty weird to try and get back in the house and he's probably in full defensive mode anyway. We can surprise and confront him tomorrow and get to Becca immediately afterwards.

You take a deep breath. "Cel, think about it: Four years ago, Rebecca starts acting weird. It stops when Lucas leaves for college. He starts dating a girl that looks like Rebecca, but he doesn't seem to care about her. Lucas comes back, and Rebecca's acting weird again."

Cel stares at you, and you can see his expression shift as it dawns on him what you're getting at. First, shock, then disgust, then unbridled rage.

"Oh, I'm gonna split that motherfucker's wig so fucking hard..." he snarls, clenching his fists.

>"He's already got on the defensive. We can confront him tomorrow."

He grumbles, rubbing his forehead. "Yeah..." he says, relenting to reason. "...But are we gonna go back in there unarmed?"

You...hadn't thought of that. Using Hansel had a toll on you- it was like your mental energy was being burned away whenever you called upon his powers. If you ran out of proverbial mojo, you'd be pretty much screwed.

"...shit, I hadn't thought of arming up." you admit.

Cel crosses his arms. "Alright, leave it to me...I'll see what kinda gear I can scrounge up." he says.

(Continuing later, logging off to get dinner.)

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10/MORNING

You get a text from Cel- you swapped numbers after leaving Rebecca's house.

Cel: OK, I did a little garage shopping and found a baseball bat and a woodcutting axe. Got a preference?

We might have to choose the metal gear option instead of bluffing. Alternatively, if we have textbooks or notebooks from school or something, cover the weapons with a layer on top. If the receptionist asks, show a brief glimpse or pull out one of the books and say we were planning on doing schoolwork while being there for Becca. She was pretty damn lenient last time, let us in by just us saying we're friends.
>>
>>2797614
>>2797616
You nod. "Yeah, I'd rather not explain carrying bats and axes in a hospital." you say.

You sling the strap of the duffle bag over your shoulder as you walk inside the hospital. You talk to the receptionist (a different one this time) and she lets you through. Rebecca's room is devoid of visitors or hospital staff.

You look to Cel. "You ready?" you ask. He gives you a look of stoic determination and nods.

"Let's do this." he says.

You pull out your key, and in response, the keyhole materializes on the side of Rebecca's head.

"Lucas..." you whisper, focusing on what you learned. "... Sexual assault."

The keyhole glows faintly as you insert the key. You feel your body turn to sand and get pulled into Rebecca's open head.

When you come to, the first thing you sense is the scent of wet soil. You stand up to find yourself in a forest. A persistent fog dims the light, giving it an eerie feeling.

"This is nothing like my Nightmare..." remarks Cel.

"Everyone dreams differently," you say as you open the bag and pull out the axe, giving it a few test swings. It feels pretty well-balanced. "Stay alert. Shadows could be hiding anywhere."

"That is a wise observation."

You and Cel both swerve your heads to see Sage coming out from behind a tree. "Excellent work finding this Nightmare." she says. "I was able to follow you through the Dreamlands here."

She looks at your axe. "You came prepared." she says with the faintest hint of a smile. She reaches behind her- and unsheathes a bastard sword.

Cel's eyes go wide as saucers. "Uh, what the fuck?!" he says in shock.

"What?" asks Sage. "Is it difficult to procure such weaponry in your world?"

>"Yeah, it's not like you can just pop by the blacksmith and ask for a sword."

Sage shakes her head. "No...I was born in the Dreamlands." she says. "My entire existence has been inside of this world."

"Hey, as fascinating as Sage's origins are, we got someone to rescue," says Cel. He grabs the baseball bat from the bag. "Any idea where she might be?"

Sage closes her eyes. "I think I can feel a presence..." she says quietly. She turns her head, like she's doing a visible scan around her despite her eyes being closed. She stops turning when she faces a small path of trampled plant-life.

"That way...it's distant, but I definitely sense someone." she says.

As you walk through the woods, you begin to see curious landmarks: tables made of stone, rocks lined up to form small rings, mossy cobblestone walls.

Instinctively, you pick up a rock and chuck it at the mask as hard as you can. The mask shatters and the darkness unravels, revealing a trio of fairy-like creatures.

You have no idea what it means. However, the Shadow seems determined. "Yes...I can lend you my power." it says.

There's a flash of blue flame, and the Shadow disappears, a key similar to your own in its place. You grab the key and immediately feel something change inside you. There's a presence in your mind.

You put the key to your head and turn it.

Instead of Hansel, the Shadow emerges-

No. It's not a Shadow. It's a Persona now.

[blue]Hi![/blue] it says cheerfully.[blue]I'm Pixie~! I'll be helping you from here on out![/blue]

"Dude, what the fuck?!" blurts Cel. "What happened to your Persona?"

"...He can take on multiple Personas." says Sage, looking at you with an awestruck expression. "I didn't even think that was possible."

"It's entirely possilble," says Sage. "Though other Shadows might not surrender so easlly.

You dive under a bush, only to snap a branch in half under your body.

"Shit!" you curse as a inky-black bear rears up and comes down on you-

-and explodes into Shadows.

Three Shadows that- oh god, you hope those are tails between their legs.

You hoist the axe and bring it down right between one of the Shadow's legs. It lets out a bloodcurdling, high pitched shriek of agony as the Freudian tail is severed. Cel winces the way most guys do when they see another guy get their family jewels damaged.

"I'm just gonna put that one out of its misery..." mutters Cel, looking away from the emasculated Shadow as Anansi finishes it off with a blast of nuclear force.

"What do you know about this Nightmare's Tormentor?" you snarl, grabbing the Shadow by the neck.

"Y-you mean the Beast?" splutters the Shadow. "He brought a girl to a cabin at the center of the forest..."

"And where would that be?" you ask, slightly increasing the pressure on the Shadow's neck.

The Shadow points a finger to the left, where the forest seems to grow much darker.

You toss the Shadow aside like a ragdoll. You pick up your axe and turn around to see Cel looking at you with concern. "...you OK there, Phil?" asks Cel. "You went all comic-book supervillain for a second."

You shake your head, trying to clear your thoughts. "Sorry.." you say. "I just want to get Rebecca outta here.

Cel doesn't look completely assured. "Sage, is there any chance that walking around in a person's Nightmare will mess with our heads? I mean, we're basically running around Rebecca's subconscious, what are the odds it's rubbing off on our minds?"

Now that's a disturbing thought. However, Sage shakes her head. "That's a valid concern," says Sage. "But I don't think that will happen."

You grab a stick and some dry grass, wrapping the grass around the end of the stick. You summon Hansel, willing him to set your makeshift torch alight. You hold your torch up high, and in the dim, flickering firelight you can see a run-down cabin in the distance...

"That must be what the Shadow was talking about..." Sage says quietly.

(Would you mind if I ended the thread here? I'm getting a little tired and could use some time to prep stuff for the fight with Rebecca's Tormentor)
