Medical Ward 3, XCOM HQ, North America

“...Your eyes are glowing.”

Peppermint can’t help but stare as she watches Naru go to town on a pilfered green flavored jelly cup, the Gene Modded trooper’s glowing orange eyes trailing about. Sweet was apparently still ‘working on it’ until Naru found out and tossed him a bone, reassuring him she’ll get him another flavor or something. You had given Peppermint a bit of a quick heads up about Gene Modding just prior to everyone arriving. She, understandably, was still thrown off just like how everyone else was upon first seeing Naru’s new self. Still, the sniper is determined to have some ‘small talk’ with the squad. You listen in as you wait for everyone to settle down.

“Mmph. Yep! Good eye, Pepper.” Naru grins, winking. With only a quick glance the Rocketeer tosses the now empty jello cup across the room, it easily lands in the trash bin. Her rocket launcher jostles during the toss and she continues to hold the plastic spoon, waving it about. “You should consider getting one of these mods, y’know. Would totally help with your sniping.”

“...No.” Peppermint shakes her head, seeming pretty decided on it.

“Hey, suit yourself.” Naru shrugs. “Vahlen’s always taken volunteers.”

“And so is Dr. Shen!” Rachel adds, jumping into the conversation. “He’s actually in the process of making new MEC suits. The Jaeger MEC suit in particular is built just for snipers and sharpshooters!”

“No again.” Peppermint frowns, continuing to make her stance very clear on both of the MELD troopers. She grits her teeth and then adds, “...If I get seriously injured… maybe…”

“Great!” Naru and Rachel grin, glaring at each other for a moment, before moving in to quickly sell their department to a now beleaguered Peppermint. The battle to one-up the other begins once again, except this time it’s Peppermint that’s caught in the crossfire.

It’s a good of a start as one can hope for Peppermint.

(Part 1 / 2)
>>
“It’s good to know some things haven’t changed, eh?” Sweet chuckles, turning his wheelchair to get a better angle at watching the ‘debate’. “Better even. From the looks of it.”

“You have no idea.” Rook murmurs, crossing his arms. “Just wait until you hear what Dozer wants to talk about.”

“Yes, it is certainly something.” Burnout nods, sitting down and placing a cigarette between his lips--

Only for a plastic spoon to sail across the room and knock it out from his lips. Naru wags an disapproving finger at him before going back to selling Gene Mods to an overwhelmed Peppermint. Burnout sighs and goes to throw away both the unused cigarette and plastic spoon. Probably for the best to not smoke in medical, anyways.

“She’s a lot better a throwing things now.” Harita notes, scratching her chin.

“No! Don’t let it sway you, Hari!” Rachel calls back in horror.

“Yes! Definitely let it sway you, Ranger!” Naru grins.

“A-ah.” Hari shrinks back a bit.

At that point, both Loki and Zhang return from the hallway outside, entering the room.

“We have our privacy.” Loki says as Zhang shuts the door.

“Good.” You nod. “Alright, everyone relax. It’s meeting time.”

Naru and Rachel pauses, giving ample opportunity for an irritated Peppermint to shove them both out of her personal space. She grumbles to herself but is relieved to be free from the pair’s clutches. The MELD troopers sheepishly take a seat alongside the others as you stand before the entire squad.

“So, what’s up boss?” Naru asks.

“Well…” You start.

How do you show the remaining members of the team on your pisonic Gift? A few options come to mind from leading them in gently or just -- well -- doing it and letting actions speak for themselves. Though, if Peppermint or any of the previous major revelations are to count for anything, they might be too surprised to even really listen.

...But it would be kinda fun to see how they react.

Leading into it first it is, writing!

While you almost want to just cut straight to the point and start glowing, you have a feeling it’ll just not end well enough to be worth it. Instead, you opt to lead into things steadily, get the entirety of the squad caught up as a whole to everything that led up to you awakening your newfound ability… and then showing it off.

“Recently, I had come to a major finding, but it was something that was building up for weeks now. Something big, just as game changing as the MELD divisions. Something that’ll really give a major edge in the war effort against the aliens.” You start. That quickly gets the attention of your squad. “Crazily enough, it all start back in Day 1 for Rachel and myself. Back in Arizona…”

And so, you took it from the top. Starting with the very first encounter with the Intruder. Initially chocked up as a lingering mental hallucination from a Sectoid’s Mindfray, you continued to lead into the other times that… thing had visited your mind unannounced. Touching in on your continued bouts of anger.

As you kept talking, you made sure to watch your squad’s reactions intently to your explanations. To the squadmates who were there during the last operation to see your Psionic abilities first-hand, it was what they needed to fill in some of the blanks that led to that big moment when you literally awoke to your powers. To others, there’s only concern so far for what this could all possibly mean besides being a huge security breach.

All except for Rachel, whose eyes steadily start to widen in realization as you go on. When you do reach the observation mission and bring up the fury you felt when destroying the Seekers, Rachel begins to get anxious, some of the other squad members starting to note a constant metallic tapping sound as Rachel did everything in her power to not just burst out in a barrage of words. It seems she might have a good idea where you’re going with this…

It’s the catalyst event that things start to get, well, personal. The last and hopefully final encounter with the Intruder, and one that has quite literally changed your life. The helplessness you felt, that burning anger, and then ultimately basking in that purple… psionic… place. It was such a huge turning point that you can’t help but start to point out about…

>The Intruder. And how despite all the threats you had faced, it was worse. Much worse.
>Your anger. Something that you didn’t really come to terms was truly a part of you until that moment. It’s who you really are when things get down to it.

guys, just scaring them is not what we should be trying to do here. Instead we should tell them about the wonders of the The Gift and how it feels to be truly Awakened. Give them the motivation to unlock their own psionics if they have the potential. We do need to recruit more psi-soldiers after all, and where better to start than with our own squad?
>>
>>2797267
I'd rather give them tangible information.
>>
Calling the vote here, writing!
>>
>>2797278
What good does the information do for them simply from knowing it? I voted to tell the higher-ups about the invader because this is strategic information for them to use, so that they can understand how to win the war better. But for us grunts such information is of less importance since our job is doing the tactical part of the war by fighting whatever we're told to fight, and to focus on bettering ourselves for every future fight.

Basically let the Commander and the people in charge worry about what to do, while we focus on readying ourselves to do whatever that needs to be done.
>>
>>2797298

>>

>>
>>2797352
>He was saying that all we have on the other was vague feeling we could not properly describe.
I don't understand that at all. Just because the anon can't describe it doesn't mean Dozer can't. If it's an option then it's totally possible.
>>
>>2797337
Common grunts have been the backbone of every military operation since the fucking Bronze Age, so quite frankly I have no fucking clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>2797370
Backbone, not head of organization. Officers do the thinking, we grunts do the doing. The rest of the time is for continuous self-improvement, not useless strategic thinking when it's not our job.
>>
>>2797369
>If it's an option then it's totally possible.

The prompt was us saying it's X but it isn't, it's us giving a review of vague feeling at best.

Furthermore not giving them something concrete because lol grunts is a great way to get deserters or rebels.
>>
>>2797381
Bitch, common soldiers constantly have to improvise and act on their own instincts and suspicions, just look at the major battles of the Eastern and Pacific Fronts for fuck's sake. Grunts having the necessary information and intel about the enemy so they can act accordingly is extremely important, especially seeing as how we're literally fighting technologically and mentally superior aliens
>>
>>2797384
If they wanted information and do more thinking then they should've went to become officers. Grunts should know their place and just do what they're told to do, no more no less. They should've known this the moment they signed up for the job.
>>
>>2797396
>If they wanted information and do more thinking then they should've went to become officers.

This is how you lose your army. The whole officers are the only things that matters bit. If you honestly believe that then you are a fucking retard who has not been paying attention to our squad mates improvising and using their brain to beat the better armed, better armored, more mobile, more innately skilled aliens.

Or you are being a troll.
>>
>>2797396
I like how you're tripling down on the bullshit grunt thing while your choice was to convey the mystical land of The Gift in Hope of inspiration cause you Intruders were too scary for our squad.
>>
>>2797409
Of course I completely believe in it, what makes you think I care about any specific person here? If people don't like what they're doing then they can go ahead and try to go home, and wait to be killed by the aliens. If they want to join the team that's trying to save the world, then they should do whatever it is they're told to do, like a good soldier.

The Intruder of course. The literal boogeyman that had been stalking you since Day 1. A thing that you’d only start to forget up until it’d be back to… assess you again when you least expect it. Only now do you really feel comfortable knowing that it’s not and can’t get into your head. The problem is, who knows how long that’ll be before it slipped through. There’s a hush that falls among the squad as you explain the gravity of the situation involving the Intruder.

“I did beat it back and kicked it out of my head but… it was more because I caught it off guard more than anything else.” You grimace. “I threw everything I had out it, but all I did was worry it that I was growing slightly ahead of its projections.”

“That thing kept watching you this entire time…?” Harita gasped.

“It could know where the base is.” Burnout frowns.

“...Maybe, but if it did, it doesn’t care.” You say. “All it cared about was when I had my episodes, or if I was underperforming. Like a scientist only caring about a lab rat if it didn’t do what she wanted. It’s a threat, and a major one at that. We need to be ready for it if it suddenly decides to show up.”

“So, it only pays attention if you are angry?” Peppermint frowns, trying to make sense of this information. “Why would this Intruder care about your emotions over anything else?”

“Well… they probably cared about this.” You say taking a step back and, without further ado you reach out into that… other place, drawing in the Focus you have left within you to make you glow once again, redirecting your attention away from the thoughts of the Intruder, pushing the images and experiences as far away as you can.

You’re tired, but you think you can get away with glowing a bit. You don’t want to give them a bad idea of what you’re capable of. Taking a steady breath and grasping that flagging pool of Focus you will it to do what you want it to do…

So they should act just like the poor stupid Aliens the Ethereals use as fodder.

I wonder if fodder fights fodder, and one fodder is more numerous, better equipped in every way, which side would win?

oh wait, the side that isn't ours. We do not win battles by being mindless grunts. We enver have. The enemy is better than us in EVERY way. Except one. They don't or can't use their brains. So we take advantage of that without mercy or pity, because they will show us none. You are either an idiot or troll of the highest order, here's your (you). As tired as you are, you still have some gas left in the tank to not collapse from the very real mental strain or worse. That energy complies to your simple request, coalescing all around you. An aura of brilliant purple surrounding you. Wisps of stray psionic energy flicker off of you, like purple embers. You also don’t need to look into a mirror as you know that your eyes are glowing.

Strike-1 takes the reveal rather well, thankfully enough. Really well, actually.

The members that have seen it prior are once again in quiet amazement at the sight. Loki nods in approval, A faint smirk appears on Burnout’s lips. Harita lets out a quiet noise of awe. Zhang remains neutral on the matter, but you think he’s starting to slowly warm up to your abilities. Rook in particular sits forward taking it all in, eager.

The other members of the team that weren’t in the France Council mission are utterly shocked through and through. With Peppermint’s jaw dropping, Sweet tilting his head and rubbing his eyes, Naru letting out a long whistle, and Rachel is--

“I FUCKING KNEW IT!” Rachel exclaims pointing frantically at you. “I’m not crazy at all! You did fucking glow like a goddamn Christmas tree!”

“Yeah, you’re right. I didn’t realize it at first, but you likely caught me dipping my foot into that even before me it seems.” You nod, holding your hand up before you and making a ball of that psionic energy, like putty awaiting in your hands. “I… have The Gift. Don’t know how, but I do.”

“I was there! I didn’t believe it myself, but I saw you fucking go wild on those Sectoids back in that damn cartel compound.” Rachel explains, excitedly. “He became a goddamn killing machine!”

“That’s what he definitely was during the last operation.” Loki nods. “Once he started glowing, it was over for the remaining aliens. It was quite the show, and he even used just his bare hands at certain points. I still have the combat footage in my bodycam in fact.”

“You better share that.” Rachel says.

“Of course.” Loki muses.

“So… you basically went Doomguy and picked up the Berserk powerup, huh? Damn, I’m jealous.” Naru points out.

Huh, she’s right in a way. You never thought of it like that... fitting.

“Um, I don’t want to switch topics but… who is this ‘doom guy’ you are talking about?” Harita tilts her head at Naru, confused.

“Wait you don’t know about Doomguy?! You got some homework for tonight!” Naru gasps.

“I definitely agree with Naru on that.” Rachel says.

“Focus.” You say, reeling the squad back in. The attention is turned back to you and you exhale out, the glow fading away. You don’t want to pass out. “Alright, the most important thing you should know is...”

You give a basic rundown of the major things psionic related of course, such as you be the lead for the Psionic Division and the other mysterious Psion that was in France. But what you really focus on is what you are really capable of, so that not only is Strike-1 aware of your capabilities they can give a better understanding of what a human Psion is truly capable of.

You really don’t have the energy to show it off, but you explain your Juggernaut ability and the more recent ‘passive’ power you had learned in the last operation, Intimidating Aura. Both major game changers of their own accord, but you also have the ability to learn further abilities, such as Solace and Swap. It’s so crazy to talk about even you have to stop yourself every now and then to tell yourself this is all real and this is what you are discussing with your squad. Magic powers, essentially.

“I guess the Commander really does know how to pick them huh.” Naru smirks.

“Seems like it.” Sweet chuckles. “Maybe we don’t even need to fight anymore, we can just throw Dozer into a mission alone. Less people I’ll have to patch up!”

“I’m still basically new to this as much as you all are.” You counter. “I’m learning something new about my Gift every day.”

“You seem to be making a big deal about calling your powers the ‘Gift’” Loki notes, curious.

“Huh? I mean… that’s what it is” You answer, shrugging. “That’s just what comes to mind naturally when describing Psionics. It’s instinctively what my mind conceptualizes it like.”

“Interesting…” Loki nods.

“You forgot one last ability.” Zhang points out.

Oh right.

“He’s right. I can also, well, read minds or literally ‘dive’ into them.” You explain, carefully.

“Jesus.” Rachel mutters.

“Yeah. I tested it out on Zhang and… yeah, I can do that. Don’t worry, I’m not going to start poking around in any of your guy’s heads without permission. In fact, I almost dug into that captured suit agent’s head, but I didn’t.” You explain. “The last thing I want is for the Gift to be used the wrong way. XCOM is going to be better than that.”

“I have one important question.” Rook asks, getting serious. “Do you know how to find out if other people have that potential of the Gift?”

“Not yet.” You shake your head. “But it’s definitely part of the plan.”

“Perhaps you could check if any of us could have the potential?” Rook suggests.
“Oh shit, yeah!” Rachel nods, getting excited. “Dude, what if more of us in the squad could be freaking adepts too!”

“Adepts?” Harita tilts her head.

“Well, there’s totally gotta be some kinda ranking system yeah? The standard ranking of privates and sergeants and crap is way too boring. We could call Dozer like a… uh… Magi or something!”

“Nerd.” Naru snickers.

“Well?” Rook asks you again. “Do you think you can?”

The squad looks to you.

“Trust me, I will… but not right now. I’m running on empty and I’d rather we do this later.” You say, stifling a yawn.

“Fair enough, but I’ll taking you up on it.” Rook nods, that eagerness still there.

The other members of the team seem to be interested as well, which is more than fair. There’s hesitance over volunteering for either of the MELD divisions, but Psionics? That seems to be different. More power and seemingly none of the downsides. You slowly start to realize that when the Psionic Division is revealed properly your days are going to be a LOT more busier than they already are. Fun.

“The aliens really won’t see expect what Strike-1 has in store next time.” Sweet says.

“It will be different.“ Burnout nods.

“I need to see your abilities when you are rested.” Peppermint comments. “I am curious.”

“Oh man, just imagine if I was Gifted, whoo boy.” Rachel laughs. “A freaking Magic MEC! Imagine…”

“That would be impressive.” Harita smiles.

There’s a growing air of optimism among the squad at the prospect of being Gifted like you are… except for Zhang. He still remains wary of the ability. Hopefully you can get him to relax, but it’s a reasonable thing to be cautious about. The aliens are striking back and the war is only escalating… but so is XCOM.

The squad appears to be winding down and you are as well, but do you have anything else to add?

“What’re you all looking at me for?” You shake your head, as some of the squad are still waiting for you. “That’s it for now, show’s over. I really want to catch some Zs, so Loki’s taking over until… whenever the hell I wake up. You guys are all dismissed.”

“Aww man, I really wanted to see you go all Juggernaut, Dozer.” Rachel sighs, disappointed. “I wonder if you can bench press one of the MEC suits.”

“Well, as I said before I still have my bodycam footage. In fact… how about all of us ladies go together, hm?” Loki suggests. “We need to talk about these recent events and all.”

“A-ah…” Harita, oddly, begins to get a bit nervous at that?

“Huh, why just us gals?” Naru scratches her head.

“I thought it would be a nice bonding experience. Wouldn’t you agree Harita?” Loki says, glancing over to Harita.

“Um.. y-yes.” Harita looks down at her feet, fidgeting a bit.

“Are you alright?” Sweet raises an eyebrow.

“Fine.” Harita insists, dodging the question.

“I’m not really allowed to leave Medical.” Peppermint narrows her eyes.

“Oh that’s fine, we can watch and discuss things where you are staying in Medical.” Loki reassures.

Peppermint is about to say something back at her before… faltering, recalling the talk you had with her earlier. You can actually hear her grinding her teeth from here.

“I-- Very well.” Peppermint grumbles. Much to the surprise and confusion of nearly everyone.

“That’s… rather different of you. “ Loki blinks, coughing. “Alright then, it’s settled. I shall get a tablet with the files and us ladies will meet up in Peppermints quarters here.”

“You’re sounding really suspicious.” Rachel narrows her eyes, quirking her lips dubiously at whatever Loki has in mind. “...But I do want to see Dozer go magic berserk, so what the hell I’m in.”

“I already passed my Rocketeer test so I don’t really have anything else to do for the rest of the day, so I’m down.” Naru shrugs while adjusting her rocket launcher's strap, then giving you a thumbs up. “Forgot to say that, but yeah, I’m combat ready!”

“I can confirm this.” Burnout adds.

Well, you really can’t help but be even more suspicious at what the hell Loki has planned with all the other girls but… fucking hell you are so tired you really don’t care right now. You just nod, totally fine with whatever girl talk they have in mind. Not your problem right now and you’ll just trust your second in command to be responsible. You say your goodbyes to your squad and you take your leave, beginning the long but very welcoming walk back to your bunk. Your bed beckons you, even more intoxicating than using the Gift itself.

It’s finally time to go to sleep.

>>2804306
You could look it up, but I'll just leave this quote by John Drury Clark to give you the idea:
"It is, of course, extremely toxic, but that's the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water—with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals—steel, copper, aluminum, etc.—because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride that protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminum keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes."
>>
>>2804383
How about a flamethrower that catches fire once you fuel it? Because that's what you'll get.
>>
>>2804414
I would be disappointed if our base didn't have a self-destruct option in case we are overrun. Like a nuke under the base.

When you had awoken, you found out that you were asleep for over twelve hours. It was surprising to you, given that you’re usually pretty good with your sleep schedule. You suppose it was a combination of being awake for an extended period of time but more importantly your own usage of psionics Another thing to keep in mind with your slowly expanding knowledge of the Gift.

The next few days were mostly recuperation and keeping things low key after the last mission. Partly from the fatigue but mostly because of how sensitive the entirety of the mission was. There’s a few rumors circulating around, but nothing pinning you of having psionic powers. The Council trooper was handed back, but there hasn’t been any word on what’s happening with the scarf wearing agent. The Commander is understandably keeping things hush hush.

The war effort as a whole however has been steady. The aliens have yet to pull some new bullshit from their deck of cards, which only means something new and ‘FUN’ is just around the corner. XCOM is prepared, with the introduction of the first line of Gauss MAG weapons starting to roll out to use by very eager troopers and upgraded armor just around the corner. The MELD enhanced troopers are easily dominating the battlefield as well, but everyone is keeping their wits about them.

Anyways, now that you’re finally up and about and rested enough to do things, the question remains what to do now?

Literally everyone else can only train their mundane skills, and only we can do psionics, and you want us to neglect that? why? Until there are other psionics that can do what we do, our unique status also gives us the responsibility of learning and training that power, both to do what others can't, and to pave the way for the ones following us later. The moment Dozer obtained psionics is when it became his priority. Given the limited training time between missions, every moment possible should be devoted to either developing it or finding and training others with the talent.

Besides, Dozer's mundane skills aren't going to degrade any time soon when he is actively going on missions and fighting, and he already has a high level of competence in it, while his psionic skills are barely just getting started, so it only makes more sense to train what he is weak and inexperienced at vs what he already knows.

Improving of your psionic skill is what you decide. While you did have plans to psionically screen your squad on the list, a bit of improvement and refinement of your abilities should be a nice refresher first. You want to try to look like you know what you’re doing even if you really don’t beforehand.

But first, breakfast… or brunch actually. It’s just after morning chow for most staff and you had missed it. You’re schedule is still a bit out of loop, so you definitely need to shape up on that front. Though given how XCOM works around the clock there’s always something on the menu to keep the base fed.

The best part is, the food isn’t actually crap. The Commander hired some damn good chefs to keep morale high alongside making sure they were well stocked with some near luxury goods for troopers. If you’re lucky and a food shipment had come in at the right time, one could snag lobster tail. Though the Commander’s coveted baked goods reign supreme in the base.

While entering the cafeteria and getting in line you spot a fellow Strike-1 member, Loki. She’s sitting by herself nursing a drink in a styrofoam cup. The Engineer gives you a sly wave before turning back to her drink. With a tray of food in hand you make your way over to her.

“Hey.” You greet her.

“Good afternoon.” She nods, smiling that smile of hers. “It’s good to know you’re up and about finally, I feared I was going to take over Strike-1 at this rate with your absence.”

“Har har. Is that taken?” You motion to the clearly empty seat.

“Not at all. Though, it’s not as if I can prevent you from taking that seat, you are after all my squad leader.” Loki politely points out.

“Force of habit.” You shrug, taking a seat. “Besides, I don’t want interrupt you with my ugly mug if you wanted some alone time.”

“You’re thoughtful, but I am merely people watching. You’d be surprised how easy it is to spot relationships in the cafeteria.”

“Huh, didn’t know you cared so much about who hooks up with who.”

“It’s passes the time.” Loki chuckles.

“Sure. Anyways, How’s everyone doing?”

“The others are behaving themselves quite well.” Loki reassures, taking a sip of her drink. You’re pretty sure it’s tea. You take the opportunity to dig in to your food while she chats. “Barring Sweet and Peppermint who are still in Medical I’ve made sure to keep everyone’s routine normal so as not to arouse any suspicion.”

“Good to hear. It’s a been bit sloppy on my part resting up so thanks for keeping everything together.” You raise your glass of water in thanks.

“You’re welcome. It’s extremely important to keep a proper appearance, for better or worse.” Loki says wryly. “So, what are your plans for today after eating now that you are up and about?”

“Practicing.” You say simply.

“Mm,” Loki hums and nods. “Would you care if I tagged along to watch? Perhaps help in some way?”

You chew your food, considering it.

“Sure, I could use a second opinion.” You say.

“Splendid.” Loki nods in approval.

From there, you conversation dies off a bit, barring the usual forgetful small talk one has while eating. The food remains more than acceptable as you clean your plate. A thought occurs to you as you take as you finish your glass of water.

“Say, what did you and the other girls think about the combat footage?” You ask.

“There was certainly approval of your methods.” Loki chuckles. “I think it would be difficult finding people dissatisfied at how you had made short work, we certainly weren’t.”

“I’ll take it, was there anything else of note?”

“Well--” Loki pauses, and there’s a sudden look of conflict written on her face, instead of her usual all knowing smile of hers.

“I get it, you gotta keep your secrets.” You concede. You shouldn’t have expected further, Loki is Loki.

“No it’s… Mm.” Loki is frustrated, oddly. “It’s a group agreement that is keeping me quiet, nothing else. I am not trying to be obtuse this time. I assure you it’s nothing that will impact things.”

“Oh.” You blink. “Fair enough. It’s a girls only thing then, whatever it is.”

“Yes exactly.” Loki says a bit too quickly.

“I’ll drop it, don’t worry about it.” You say, waving topic away in dismissal, even despite wanting to know more.

Loki nods, though she seems dissatisfied with this outcome. She begins to start going inward, becoming thoughtful and quiet. The enigmatic Engineer is acting rather strange for some reason but there’s not much you think you can do about that. You decide to finish up to put your tray away.

“Let’s go.” You say to her, but Loki doesn’t reply right away. Thinking and looking down at the now cold cup of tea held in her hands.

“Loki?” You tap the table in front of her, startling the red-headed woman. She makes a squeaking noise as she's startled. That’s a complete first from her. You've never seen her caught unawares before.

“Ah! Ahem…” Loki composes herself, looking at you. “Oh, you’re done. Let’s go then, my apologies.”

“Are you OK?” You’re getting a bit worried.

“I am fine.” Loki insists. “We shouldn’t waste anymore time.”

“Right…”

The both of you start taking your leave from the cafeteria.

“We can go to the excavation site in third lower level.” You suggest, recalling the same place Naru had hid Bradford’s sweater. “I overheard the construction crews are apparently focusing their efforts in building another power facility and not excavating more rooms.”

“Mm.” Loki hums, distracted.

Informed consent means consenting to an act for which you understand the consequences. Generally uninformed consent is not considered proper consent, particularly in sexual situations, and I do not view uninformed consent as being real consent.

If a person wants to have mentally invasive sex, knowing what that means, let them.

So I was going to try and write out an update before sleeping, but I had a sudden inspiration to draw, which I've been super unmotivated for lately. So here's some art of Naru and Burnout!

I'll try and still write the update tonight but if I don't expect it sometime later in the afternoon.

Bonus points if anyone can figure out what artstyle I was inspired by, it's from an upcoming game I'm excited for!

When do they get a lvl 1 Bond ? Or would it be a headache to manage this mechanic on top of everything else ?

Oh and Decu's artwork maybe ? ((from the Madoka Noir quest)

Why am I only just now realising how fucking awesome an XCOM version of a M202 FLASH would be?
>>
>>2808283

I guess we could purchase and retrofit some considering XCOM's weapon budget. Though it would be nice to have a homemade variant.

I'm just waiting for someone to bolt a pintle mount onto a MEC for even more fire support.
>>
>>2808283
But where in the world would you put the rockets? Everyone knows you can only fit one, MAYBE two rockets on a belt, but you need to be a seriously trusted member of the army and ludicrously strong to carry TWO.

A rocket launcher that can fire four times is utterly worthless if a human being can only carry two rockets at best, what were the engineers thinking? What's next? Drone strikes? Actually using air support? Ridiculousness, all!
>>
>>2808301
Just strap about two dozen of them on Rachel. After that the aliens will never shoot in her direction because they know they would also die in the explosion if they accidentally hit one of the rockets.
>>
>>2808301
>What's next?
Naru's flame gauntlet strapped on a flying drone.
>>
>>2808301
>What next?
Actually using our ridiculous amounts of nukes against alien invasion.
>>
>>2808599
That’s OUR PLANET your nuking!

I cannot for the life of me figure out Loki, thought i guess it's fitting for the name.. Im guessing the girls thought it was kinda hot when dozer went all manmode, but other than that i havent the slightest clue whats going through her head
>>
Alright, I finally have some free time to write! Working on the next update now!

>>2808155
It's not that, though I do enjoy Decu's art! It's based on the artstyle of a spinoff for a jrpg that recently got a bunch of news released.

“What’s wrong, Loki? I’ve never seen you so distracted.” You ask her as you make your way to the main elevators.

“Is it really that obvious I am distracted?” Loki sighs.

“Just a bit.”

“I see... “ Loki frowns, shaking her head. “I really have slipped as of late. Do you really wish to know?”

“Loki, I barely know anything about you. Nobody does. So yes, I do want to know. I’ll literally take anything I can get really.” You point out.

“Ahah, fair enough.” Loki chuckles lightly, her mood improving a bit at that. “Very well…”

The both of you enter the large elevator and begin the steady descent downwards. You and Loki stand to the side of the elevator as other staff use it to go to wherever they need to go.

“I…” Loki considers her words for a moment. “It’s safe to assume I have been quite the bitch for a very long time, no?”

You’re immediately caught off guard by that.

“Uh… well--”

“You don’t have to mince words or anything of the sort. I am not fishing for anything else but honesty. I know very well how I act. And it’s, objectively, rather bitchy. Wouldn’t you agree?”

She waits for your reply.

You raise an eyebrow at Loki, taken aback.

“You’ve been distant, sometimes unbearably smug, and the cat incident needs no mentioning, but you’ve not been a bitch. A bit hard to get along with at times but not a bitch.” You say.

It’s Loki’s turn to be taken aback for a moment, before smiling softly. It seems to be a more genuine smile too. It improves this elevator trip down.

“Do you know you have a way of words at times, Dozer?” Loki says, a faint smirk still on her lips.

“Sometimes.”

“Well, thank you for not sugar coating it.” Loki says softly, brushing a lock of her red hair behind her ear.

“No problem.” It would honestly be a waste of breath if you did, she’d see right through it.

“It’s nice... What you say may be true perhaps with you and some of the others but, as a whole, I am a challenge to be around.” Loki continues. “I am starting to come to realize the problems of that.”

You can’t help yourself. “Only now?”

“I’m not unaware of what I do, it’s on purpose, it just didn’t bother me as much… until now.”

“What changed?”

Loki becomes silent again just as the elevator reaches the desired floor. The both of you step off and begin to traverse the hallways, you are fully prepared for Loki to just drop the subject until she speaks again.

“Did you know I was the one who first started the trend in XCOM for soldiers to only use callsigns and nicknames instead of actual names?” Loki asks you.

“Not at all, but it’s not surprising. If there was anyone who would it would be you.” You admit.

“It seemed like a fantastic idea at the time, given how dangerous our profession is. That first month was… brutal. Not getting too attached with people was a benefit. Nobody has ever figured what my name is, barring Command of course.” Loki says, recalling the past. You obviously weren’t there for it, but those first days were never spoken of fondly.

“Makes sense.” She’s leading up to something. You lend her an ear.

“The only person to come close to figuring out my name was… Babbler.” Loki smiles ruefully. “He was brute forcing it and kept shooting in the dark repeatedly, but he was getting close. I gave him the slightest indication, and he ran with it with gusto.”

“Oh.” You could actually see the scene in your head. Babbler babbling away, just randomly throwing out names only for Loki to slyly shoot him down with a comment. But that wouldn’t stop him, especially if he was drunk.

“I believe he would’ve figured it out by now too. Despite how he was a loud, boorish, and self-proclaimed ladies man… I appreciated his persistence, even if I never admitted it to him.” Loki, shakes her head. “It’s a shame he died.”

>It’s a damn shame.
>Was there anything more between the two of them?
>Babbler would probably disapprove of people dwelling on his death.

“It’s a damn shame.” You agree. What else is there to say in the matter? All you can really hope is to channel that anger at his death into something productive for you. You have to keep moving forward.

“Yes. Indeed.” Loki nods, slowing down to a stop at the hallway.

You turn back and note her glancing about, making sure there isn’t a stray staff member or the like milling about. She seems to make a decision then, before looking back at you. Whatever she has been wrestling with has finally been decided.

“I’m all ears.” You say.

“I’ve worked very hard to cultivate the respect of others in the base for both myself and the squad. But, that had come at the cost of having to… act as I have. There was an exception with Babbler just by his sheer relentlessness, I was beginning to let my guard down, a bit. But he’s dead. And seeing how close some of the others are in the squad…” Loki pauses. “I can’t help but feel a bit jealous.”

“Why don’t you just try and open up? It really isn’t that hard when you start.” You say.

“That’s… what I am doing right now. With you.” Loki answers. “But, I know what you might be thinking. I am one to say many words and make many promises, but I’ve never really given up anything to anyone. I want to change that… I need to, or I will severely regret it..”

She takes one last look around again, determined to make sure nobody is present or around her. Just for good measure, she takes a few steps towards you. She’s close enough you can smell the shampoo in her hair, it’s a type of lavender. She takes a breath, steeling herself…

“My name is Heather.” She murmurs.

You blink, letting that sink in for a moment. You immediately decide the best course of action upon hearing this new information. You seize the opportunity and push for more like the greedy Assault you are.

“Can I get a last name for that, Heather?” You smirk, teasing the Engineer. Saying the her real name aloud is satisfying. It’s a pretty name for her, you will admit.

“....” Heather bites her lip, considering it. She sighs, realizing you’ve get her and then reaches out to place a hand on your chest to push you away. “...Wallcroft. Heather Wallcroft. Satisfied?”

“Very.” You smirk, allowing yourself to get pushed back. You let out a low whistle. “That wasn’t so hard opening up, eh?”

“Besides having to endure your sheer satisfaction… it was rather pleasant.” Heather admits, looking away. There’s a short pause before she looks back and narrows her green eyes at you. “If you whisper a word of my name to anyone else however, there will be consequences.”

You just chuckle. No way in hell you’re going to say either way. It’s nice to be the one to have the advantage for once. You can see why Heath-- you mean Loki -- enjoys being the in the know of little tidbits like this.

“Mm.” The Engineer hums quietly to herself. Without even realizing it she begins to pout at you. “It’s your turn now, you know. I have told you my name, it’s now your turn to… impress me again with your psionics.”

“So you’re my judge now, Heather?”

“In a way.” Loki says, her eye twitching slightly as you say her name. “I think I have some ideas for how you can use some of your current powers… so let’s get on with it then.”

“Lead the way.” You motion.

Loki makes a bemused noise and does lead the way. As you get closer to your assigned ‘training room’ you are already instinctively preparing yourself mentally for the training ahead. You’re looking forward to this.
