/qst/ - Quests

It has been a long time since I've seen one of these on /qst/. The game I was playing in just ended, so lets see if we can bring these back.

I will be using the 1.0 version, not the errata, and intrigue rules will be handwaved, since I find them overly complex and counter-intuitive.

I will need 3d6, to decide the realm our house is from. First three rolls are the options, then the thread can vote on which realm they wish to be from.

I agree but if you aren't going to budge on that, you need to post the options so we can vote. I don't know what these rolled numbers actually mean in relation to what starting region they represent.

They being said, its been awhile since a long-running AGoT quest and I am excited to see how this one goes.

I'm inclined to agree.

Dorne. Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. The land that killed the Dragon, the land that never surrendered. The Dornish are a hardy people, raised on the stories of defense, endurance and revenge. Passionate and empowered, Dorne is a truly unique culture within Westeros. Only age decides inheritance, and poison, violence, and intrigue dominates the internal politics of the houses.

Rolled 5 (1d6)

>>2806316
Heres what I was thinking,

Our house was founded after the Usurper's War so we have the king's favor. I am thinking a Dornish knight who served among his retinue and was granted the holdings of a disloyal house after the war. Serves as a staunch loyalist in the marches surrounded by those hateful of the new regime. He became a villain during the Ironborn rebellion when he committed many atrocities on those he felt were less than scum. Or maybe he went to war with a couple of neighboring houses that he suspected of being disloyal and went a bit overboard. Either way, he faces scorn in his own homeland despite being one of Big Bobby B's main men. We would either pick up as him or his firstborn depending on the thread.

Intrigue chapter is ditched, bonus 1d6 rolls are done based on how many important people your house has (Lord, Heir, Maester, Septon etc), with 1 additional 1, because I did a bad roll.

Defence: 30
Influence: 39
Lands: 45
Law: 22
Population: 17
Power: 45
Wealth: 24

Defense: 30
Defensible, with at least one fortified town or castle. Roads and trails are present, and rivers or ports are likely. A Castle, nice.
Influence: 39
A minor house. Examples include House Clegane, House Payne, and House Karstark. On the cusp of being very powerful.
Lands: 45
A large area of land, that spreads across a great distance. This area likely includes a variety of terrain features. House Martell’s control of Dorne is representative of this level of resource. Holy shit thats alot of land.
Law: 22
The typical level of Law throughout much of Westeros. Crime is common but not out of control. Normal, not bad.
Population: 17
Small population but no single community larger than a small town. I'm thinking a fair amount of your land may be desert....
Power: 45
A large force of diverse, trained, and competent soldiers. You probably also have the services of a small navy as well. Several banner houses are sworn to you. But by the Seven, it is remaining your desert.
Wealth: 24
Common. Your family has enough to get by. Again, Average.
>>
>>2806407
Where the fuck could this house even be in Dorne?
>>
>>2806409
Some mountain or desert I guess?
Anyways I think we should convert the land into something else.
>>
>>2806409
Along the border of the Stormland's Marches. We could've been placed there by Bobby B who wanted another buffer between dornish raids and his homeland. We gained the land through through either conquering, pushing out, or vassalizing the neighboring houses with the tacit approval of the crown.
>>
>>2806417
Ya, but aren't there a lot of canon Dornish houses with known land or wat?
>>
>>2806417
That could explain our predecessor's hated reputation.
>>
House Martell's direct land is the land from Sunspear to the curve of the Greenblood, the Mountains north of Sunspear, and most of the coast from the Greenblood to the tips of the Arm. A large area, about the size of the crownlands, but not all of Dorne. The descriptions never sat well with me. That is how I am interpreting this. Now, your personal adjustments. Disregard what I posted further up the thread, I have checked the other ASOIAF quests, and they gave 1d6. I will give 2d6, only 1 to any resource.
>>
>>2806440
Put it in Pop.
>>
>>2806440
Pop and wealth
>>
>>2806419
It looks like our main opponents in the area would be House Yronwood and House Wyl. House Yronwood is seated much father south but they have nominal control over the Boneway which gives them a shitload of wealth. House Wyl are staunchly anti-stormlands and would murder us over our loyalty to the Crown. Both are very powerful with Yron focusing in wealth and Wyl in power for border raids. It ain't gonna be easy but it should be fun.

Kingsgrave exists along the western side of the border and are a minor house. I would suggest we start with them as a banner house and have taken the land between them and the Boneway. If we can take that, we control the trade.
>>
>>2806449
I don't think we can take established house as a banner house. And yes, everyone in Dorne will hate us so it'll be fun.
>>

Why not? I think our house could've taken them inbetween the time of start and our founding. Could even make them the principle receiver of our villainy roll for fun times. I'd be fine with just a normal banner house though. Either way, we'll be pissing off the Yrons who canonically own most of this region through banners.

Has got the most votes now. You have a small castle, and the Ruin of Vultures Roost. Your land was annexed from being under the control of Manwoody and Wyl, though it was undeveloped, so the pain of loosing it was not so bad. In fact, Manwoody and Wyl count themselves lucky that was as much as they lost, compared to other Targaryean loyalists.

Power is up next. The big one.
You have 45 power to spend.

They can't form a pact without getting a smackdown from the crown. The early game is going to be all about cementing our place in Dorne and finding allies before the king bites the dust. Its going to be hard but interesting. Maybe we can even stop the boar incident though I big doubt that.

I don't know what makes a good army in this system so somebody should do that. We should pick up some scouts and a garrison for sure though.

Here is the map of the surroundings, and a quick rundown on the Houses.

House Caron of Nightsong is one of the principal noble houses in the stormlands, sworn to Storm's End. They rule from Nightsong and hold the title Lord of the Marches, although they do not hold dominion over other marcher lords in the Dornish Marches. Their arms are a field of black nightingales on yellow.

House Fowler of Skyreach is a noble house from Skyreach in Dorne. They hold the title of "Warden of the Prince's Pass" and watch over the Prince's Pass. Their arms are Silver, a hooded hawk trussed blue.

House Wyl of the Boneway is a house from Wyl in northern Dorne. It is one of the principal houses sworn to House Martell of Sunspear. Their arms are a black adder biting a heel on yellow

House Yronwood of Yronwood is the most powerful house in Dorne after the ruling Martells. Their seat, Yronwood, is the last fortress defending the Boneway; this is reflected in their title Warden of the Stone Way. House Yronwood claimed the title High King of Dorne before the arrival of the Rhoynar, and the head of the house continues to be called the Bloodroyal. Their arms are Gold, a Black portcullis

House Blackmont of Blackmont is a major Dornish noble house. Their seat, Blackmont, is on the banks of the Torentine in the Red Mountains of Dorne. Their arms are a black vulture with a pink infant in its claws, on yellow.

House Manwoody of Kingsgrave is an old Dornish noble house. Its seat, Kingsgrave, is placed amidst the Prince's Pass, guarding access to Dorne. Their arms are Black, a skull argent crowned gold

House Drinkwater is a noble house of landed knights from Dorne. No official coat of arms exists, so I have chosen it as Gold, a Black Knight holding a Blue Cup.

>>2806664
Yeah, I picked Trophy Room purely for roleplaying.
>>
>>2806653
I'll support this then. It's the most creative one.

This

>>2806653
>>2806664

>Maester, Port, Trophy Room

You have a Maester, as the best houses do, a Maester Borrell, specializing in economics, medicine and mining.

You have a port, annexed from House Wyl, a sore spot to say the least.

You have a trophy room, the most famous trophy being the shield and helmet of Ser Jonothor Darry, taken at the Trident by your father, defending King Robert, but not before your elder brother was slain by Ser Darry.
>>
>>2806681
Now we need suggestions for House Name, Motto and coat of Arms. We can roll for it, but that tends to get stupid and weird. (Seriously, I've once had a house with a WhiteTurtle Rampant, on a field of wavy orange lines and green spots.)
>>
>>2806681
Well our Da was a fucker and was risen by Bobby B so, probably not a nice name. Maybe something to do with Baratheon, like, House Boargore or sometihng idk
>>
>>2806681
A Capricorn for the coat of arms
>>
>>2806684
Someone suggested Shadowpeak earlier and I thought that wasn't bad idea for the castle name. It could be built far above the small town with the surrounding mountains casting a shadow across it for the majority of the day.

We were knighted for our defense of and service to Bobby B so something in that realm would make sense for the coat, name, and motto.
>>
>>2806684
House Blacksand
Named for our father who was a literal bastard (never said whose) from Dorne. OurFather had a black hilted Morning Star for his main weapon and so Bobby B made it up on the spot.

Motto is “Nothing stays hidden forever” picked by our father for a reason he never really said.

Coat of arms is a silver morning star against a blue sky with black sands underneath. The sun conspicuously missing.
>>
>>2806708
I like the name and coat of arms, but the motto is really gay.
>>
>>2806693
House Boarister? Green hog's head on white

House Words:

>>
>>2806708
This but change the words to,

>>2806722
>Under the shadow
>>
>>2806708
>>2806684
I like this except for the motto. The le mystery secret bastard of Dorne plot I don't really care about if it gets put in or not.

Motto is "We Lead The Way" cuz our Father was a crazy bastard and a great fighter, also for a bunch of philosophical stuff, and finally to troll house Wyl and Yronwood
>>
>>2806695
Switching to
>>2806708
>>2806729
>>
Okay gathering all this together.

House Blacksand

Under the Shadow

Coat of arms is a silver morning star against a blue sky with black sands underneath.

Any objections? If not, we'll move onto character creation for your character.

By the way, I know what made your father a villain, it is public knowledge, since it is the reason Robert retracted his favour from the house. Your father butchered a patrol of Manwoody soldiers he found on his lands while patrolling as bandits, claiming they had no heraldry when Manwoody revealed their soldiers were missing near the border. Manwoody complained to the Martells, your father called for Robert to intervene. Robert stopped any action being taken against you, but your family weren't invited to a feast for veterans of the Rebellion Robert threw shortly afterwards.

>>2806742

>>
>>2806740

>>
>>2806740
I like it.
>>
>>2806740
Welp, there goes aligning ourselves with Manwoody. Hopefully the Greyjoys give us a chance to show that we are different from our father to the king.

>>2806743
I like it for the character. He is going to always be trying to escape out from under his father's shadow.
>>
>>2806740
Ok so that was the villainy what got us the favor after it?

Since we were founded of infrastructure(dad having enough power to get bobby to back him possibly as a Merc?)
>>
>>2806747
Yes, but the motto was made by the Father for the family, not for ooc knowledge.
>>
>>2806751
Yeah? The father made it but we OOC or IC can draw our own personal connection from it. I'm just saying that its thematically appropriate.
>>
>>2806750
Basically, Robert annexed a bunch of undeveloped land from Manwoody and Wyl, then upgraded a hall that was above the port into a castle for you. The infrastructure was the castle and road being built, the road feeds into the Boneway.

>>2806747
Yeah everyone who swears fealty to Dorne hates you.

>>2806751
The first your father would have seen of Shadowpeak would have been its shadow covering the land as the sun set behind it.

Married young, your father needing allies in his vulnerable position. Where is your father from?

>Dorne. House Uller of Hellholt have always been impulsive and unpredictable. So when your father looked for suitors, their youngest son Romarn was married to you. He is wild eyed and violent, and took part in the massacre against the Manwoodys.
>The Reach: House Mullendore of Uplands was happy to annoy the Marcher Lords by extending their reach towards there, by marrying their son Michael, a developing tourney knight to you. However, Ser Martyn did not understand Dornish inheritance, and they now feel slightly cheated.
>The Stormlands: House Penrose, knowing your father from their heir, Ser Cortnay, serving at Storms End. Their studious son, Carth, spends much time with the Maester, going over the accounts.

This was very confusing until then.

I would go Dorne for the potential alliance but Uller is too much of a wild card for my liking. I also enjoy the thought of this pairing.

Thats over 4000 Stags. A good sum. As a spear fighter without shield training, either you take

A Superior Boar spear, two handed, able to pin people. This is what Oberon uses.

A Superior Spear and Superior Normal Shield. This is faster and more defensive, able to make attacks against different targets, but less damage.

As for armour, I would recommend Ring armour, Mail, or Scale Armour, depending on how well protected you want to be. Full plate is in your price range, but you would not be able to move.
>>
Rolled 3, 5, 3, 4, 5, 1 = 21 (6d6)

>>2807109
Still one more dice to roll
>>
>>2807109
I'd go for the Boar spear and whichever of those armors allow us to move fastest. My ideal is a dodge build.
>>
>>2807109

Ring armour is the lightest, hinders you the least, and slows you down the least.

Mail is the middle ground, more protection, but hinders your defence more and has more bulk.

Scale has the same bulk, but lowers your defence even more.

>>
>>2807122
Your character is a decent fighter. No tourney champion or monster of the battlefield, but able to kill a soldier or challenge an average knight on foot. If you have a Boar spear, you want the ring armour, since you have no shield to add to your protection. With a spear and shield, you are harder to hit, but will do far less damage. Impale on the boar spear though, can oneshot people.

>>2807132
No specialty needed for reading mother tongue
>>
>>2807128
Yes, but more damage to finish the fights quicker and get through guards. We lose against majority of men in a contest of strength, so we need to make up with skill.
>>
>>2807109
>Boar spear
>Ring armour
Quick one-shot
>>
The slow/fast difference is just that Boar Spears cannot make divided attacks, hitting 2 people in a single round of attacking.
>>
>>2807109
>A Superior Spear and Superior Normal Shield. This is faster and more defensive, able to make attacks against different targets, but less damage.

>3 Superior Boar Spears and Ring Armour.
Fast and deadly, capable of leaving a man with a spear through the chest.

Spears are cheap, so I'm giving you three superior ones.

You have a Superior stilleto dagger, thin, and perfect for times when your spears would stand out.

You have a Sand Steed for a mount, the finest steeds for riding and light cavalry.

You have 2 sets of fine clothing, one set for court wear, beautiful dresses and veils, the other for traveling, well made leathers and comfortable cloaks.

This leaves you with a purse of 700 Stags, or 3 dragons, 70 stags. Enough for a decent journey staying at good inns.

>>2807153
Lysene cannot be read. It simply there to show thats the language.

Now you need to decide what Benefits you have. You have 5 Destiny Points, 3 of which can become benefits. 1 is already used for Head of House.

>>
>>2807213
Wew, Penrose has Valyrian ancestor so technically we can have Valyrian Blood.
>>
Attractive is locked in.

Charismatic is up against Spear Fighter 1

I am saying no to Heirloom, because of how young your family is, unless you have an idea how a raised on the field soldier has an ancient Valyrian weapon, without stealing it.

>>2807218
Yes but you are not descended from Penrose, your children are.
>>
>>2807221
Attractive makes us really good at persuasion already but we are only average with the spear. Spear Fighter 1 allows us to attack again on a miss which pairs well with the spear and shield combo.
>>
>>2807221

>>
>>2807221
What bonus does Valyrian Steel give to combat?
>>
>>2807221
>>2807240
To be clear, I'm going with Spear Fighter 1, then, if Valyrian Steel won't go through. We're already really Charismatic without the skill.
>>
>>2807232
That would be a big breach of honour. Not returning a Valyrian steel weapon to its rightful House is seen as the act of a thief. Robert would not do it, and it would blacken your name with every halfway noble family in Westeros. Further more, it would be a sword, non-sword Valyrian steel weapons are rarer than virgin attractive whores after 2 nights of work in Kings Landing.

>>2807240
In combat Superior gives +1 to the test result. Valyrian does this as well, but also gives +1 damage.
>>
>>2807221
Spear Fighter 1.

Attractive already gives us significant bonuses to persuasion. We need combat bonuses people.
>>
>>2807252
Are there "qualities" we can't get in game?
>>
>>2807262
Some of Fate and all of Heritage. It costs a destiny point to gain a new Benefit, and you must justify it with roleplay/gameplay
>>
>>2807267
sheeeeeeiit, I really want Blood of the Rhoyne but I know nobody will pick it ;_;
>>
I'm calling this to a close.
We have 3 votes in, 2 for Spear Fighter 1, 1 for Charismatic. Stacking benefits is not the best idea, since combat will come along, and having played someone with fighting 2, not being able to hit is horrible.

Finally, you need a name. Your last name has been changed to Blacksand, only a first name is needed.

“Darling, could you take him?”
You stand slowly, as Carth reaches out and takes Calrin, your 2 year old son from you, lifting him into the air, and making wooshing noises.
“Look Calrin, you’re the Winged Knight, fly up and slay the Griffin King!” he says, moving Calrin through the air, as Calrin giggles.
“Dada, whatm me! Whatm me!” chants Cerran from around Carth’s leg, clutching to his fathers leg.
“You, my dear Cerran, are Galladon of Morne, the Perfect knight! You will slay a Dragon, and the maiden will weep for love of you!”
Laughing, you turn to Elia, your 4 year old daughter, who is slowly reading a book. Leaning in, you wrap your arms around her, and pull her close. You see a woman, standing before burning ships, her hair streaming behind her. She squirms, and tries to pull away, wiping her hand on her cheek as you kiss it. She pulls away, and runs over to the window of the Solar, stumbling slightly as she does so. Before you rise to chase her, there is a knock on the door, and Maester Borrell steps through.

“I’m sorry, my lady, but its your father. I have done all I can, but I fear the Stranger comes for him. He is asking for you.”

Carth shoots the Maester a glare, glancing at the children, who continue playing obliviously.

Nodding to Borrell, Carth puts Calrin down, and begins to move wooden knights and dragons across their view, Elia, crawling behind her twin brothers, to gaze at the brightly coloured figures. Stepping out into the hallway, you follow Borrell through the smooth stone halls, sunlight shining through slits in the wall. As you walk, you think on your father’s illness. He had gone hunting, brought down a mountain lion, and had insisted on eating it for dinner. Though you and Carth remained eating the beef stew that was prepared, your father ate the lion, including its heart, and the next day had been bedridden, sweating and bleeding into his sheets. Maester Borrell tended to him, fed him purgatives and tried all his arts. Nothing had worked. For a week, your father had deteriorated, the reek of blood and urine filling the room in which he lay. Borrell believed it was some form of illness from the lion meat, but could not turn the course of it, only delay it. As you step through your fathers door, a racking cough erupts from the bed, as your father turns his head slowly to look at you. The stench is unbelievable, the smell of waste and decay assaulting your senses. Your father grins weakly at seeing you, and speaks in a low bitter voice.

“My Daughter. The Man of Shadowpeak, still playing with her dolls and whelps while her father lies dying...”

How do you approach him?
>Aggressive. He knows Carth’s worth, and he announced three days of feasting at Elia’s birth. How dare he disparage your children!
>Neutral. It is the shadow of the Stranger making him like this, but that is no reason to be nice to him.

“Father. You have something to say to me?”

“So cold, Daughter. Am I really such a monster...” He trails off, his smile widening, before breaking into a coughing fit, speckles of blood coating the sheets, already stained dark.
“I’m bleeding from both ends, I shit my own guts, and I can barely move. That lion got the better of me after all...”

“Father, have you brought me here to describe your death, or tell me something?”

Your fahter nods, and beckons you closer.

“You are Lady of Shadowpeak now. The only true Kings servant in this blighted land. I did not loose my son to a Kingsguard for you to die to a Dornish dragonlovers blade. Carth is useless against these things. He is fertile, and thats all that matters. Sleep with whoever you need to, kill whoever you need to, make them fear you like they fear me, and your children and their children will rule here. Do not coddle them, raise them to be wolves, or weapons to be wielded against your enemies. I will not have this gift from my King, earned with the blood of my son, lost by a woman who thinks with her heart, not her hatred!”
He falls back against the pillows, and exhales a long breath, laden with the scent of death.
“You will need to go to Sunspear to bend the knee to that traitor Martell. When you do, take steps to ensure you do not return to a ruin like Vultures Roost.”

His eyes close, and his breathing quiets. A few more moments pass, and Borrell comes closer, holding a small knife above your fathers mouth.

“He is dead. He is with the Stranger now.”

You both stand silently for a few moments, before Borrell speaks again.

“My Lady, I have a request. This illness, I have seen nothing like it, and cannot find any reference to it in my books. May I keep the body here, for a few hours at most, before the Silent Sisters come? If I can find what killed him, the Citadel would be grateful.”

Borrell grins.
“I would not dream of ruining my reputation that way. Though seeing a Silent Sister breaking her oath to admonish me would be an experience few have had.”
He then realises his tone was too glib, and sobers his expression.
“Forgive me, my Lady, if I have overstepped. Your lord father indulged my sarcastic side too much I fear. I apologise.”

“I doubt he would complain.” you say, stepping back from the bed, breathing lightly through your mouth.
“Is there anything you have to tell me before you cut my father open?”
Borrell looks embarrassed, and steps back slightly.
“My Lady, there is business of the fief to attend. Your harbour master, chief of scouts and a deputation from House Yronwood are waiting, aware of the sensitivity of the time. I will send a servant to tell them when you are available, if you wish to take time to adjust to your father’s demise.”

So I had a thought that I wanted to float by. If we fuck Robert and have a bastard by him, we could be in a prime position to usurp the Iron Throne once he dies. Tommen and the rest are all incest-children while the Barantheon brothers are basically guaranteed to die. Our bastard might actually have the best claim to the throne.
>>
>>2807567
But he won't be of our dynasty. He could become king and legitimize himself, though, that is if he doesn't form his own.
>>
>>2807567
I don't really like fucking with canon too much. Stannis has a better claim over any bastards, Stannis actually is the One True King. Nobody would back our son's claim probably, desu.
>>
>>2807572
Depends on how well we raise him. No one liked Stannis so they backed his brother who had a weak claim to the throne. If we raise our bastard Bobby spawn and make them the most dashing bastard to ever grace the kingdom of Westeros, they'd support him. Also, make him marry a Tyrell.
>>
>>2807581
replace him with them 'cause this is assuming they're not gonna be a gal
>>
>>2807581
That's very ambitious and would be really hard to pull. Also, Renly didn't have a weak claim, dude, he would be heir after Stannis/Shireen depending on if Stannis won.
>>
>>2807585
In comparison to Stannis', Renly had a weak claim. Stannis would have to kill Renly first to get the crown, anyway.
>>
>>2807569
Even if he isn't our dynasty, having one of own become king could do wonders for our house's prestige and power. I'm not actually advocating for this but I thought it was amusing enough to bring up.

>>2807572
>Implying we don't slip him a manticore
Stannis is as Stormlander as they come and the Martells likely wouldn't approve. We raise our bastard to be proper Dornish and very dashing to impress our neighbors. If we could build enough clout within Dorne by then, we could likely get them to back our claim as long as our son took up a name besides Barantheon upon ascension.

“Tell the House Yronwood deputation I will see them in the hall, make them comfortable, and offer wine. I will not have it said that House Blacksand leaves its visitors with dry throats.”

“Yes, my Lady. It is Ynys Yronwood, and her husband, Ser Ryon Allyrion. They have a scholar with them.”

Nodding, you step out and head to the small chamber behind the main hall. Inside, a polished sheet of bronze stands, and you inspect yourself in it. Fixing, and smoothing your dress, you also take a small bottle of scent, and dab it on yourself, hoping to mask the last hints of your fathers chamber. You hear low voices next door, and the sounds of chairs being moved. Opening the door, you see two people seated on chairs before the seat of Shadowpeak, with another, clutching a leather case of papers standing behind them. One is a lady, her hair a dark blonde, falling over a green riding dress, her eyes a deep blue, the other a man, wearing neat black clothing, but a breastplate displaying the golden hand of Godsgrace. At his side is a longsword, in a red sheath. Both are wearing leather riding boots, and are leaned in close to each other, murmuring. They stop and look up as you enter.

“Greetings, Lady Yronwood, Ser Allyrion. What brings you to Shadowpeak today?”

Ynys smiles, and stands.

“We simply saw a chance to combine a pleasant visit with some business, but that can wait. Tell, me, how is your Lord Father, is he hunting, or is there another reason his heir greets us?”

Ser Ryon remains seated, a sardonic smile spreading over his face.

How do you respond.
>Truth, but bluntly. Your Father is dead, you are the Lady of Shadowpeak. Respect is due.

SUCCESS (1 Degree)

Settling yourself into the seat of Shadowpeak, you straighten your dress, and fold your hands on your lap.
“I ask you to forgive the wait. My father took ill a week ago, and he passed away less than an hour ago. But please, what brings you to Shadowpeak?”

The two of them share a glance, that seems to convey a look of “Well then.” They seem unsurprised by the news, but Yny’s face falls.
“My dear, I am so sorry. We did not know your father was so poorly, we would not have come at this dark time, if you would wish it, please tells us to return at a better time!”

Ryon stands, and bows deeply.
“I am sorry to hear of your loss. As my wife says, we will leave if it is suitable for you.”

“No, we would hear what you have to say. Life does not stop because one Lord dies, a lesson that is good to know.”

Ynys, seats herself, her face still sad.

“We did come to see how your family have settled, having heard of your twins and daughter. We hope your husband has adjusted to the sun of Dorne suitable after, the rain and wind of the Stormlands. However, we also come with business. We have heard from merchants travelling down the Boneway, that they are being stopped at the point your road meets the Boneway. Toll collectors taking tolls from them for the Boneway, but we have no toll collectors there. House Wyl has no road at that point, and our guards have reported no movement of men from their lands up the Boneway. This only means that you either have bandits on your lands, or you are running toll collection on our territory. We have had to pay recompense to several merchants, and we seek the truth of this matter, and recompense.”

“I assume you bring proof of this, and not simply words.”

“Indeed we do, Lady Blacksand. This man here is Deran Clarick, a trusted merchant of Mistwood. He brings with him the marked testimonies of him and 19 other Merchants, who were charged a sizeable amount of coin for access to the Boneway at the border of the Boneway and your lands.”

Ynys gestures, and the man with the leather case steps forward. He is wearing a dark brown cloak over a linen shirt, while clutching a green felt cap he was wearing on his balding head when you entered. In his other hand, he holds the leather case, and bows to you.

“Greetings, my Lady. I, and 19 other merchants were accosted by some 20 men wearing mail and helms at the edge of your lands as we made our way down the Boneway. They blocked the path, and demanded we pay the Boneway toll due to House Yronwood. When we said we normally pay at Yronwood, with the marks of the waystations telling how far they have travelled, they informed us merchants travelling to Shadowpeak had been bypassing the waystations, and as such, the toll was collected on entering the Boneway now. Since we had no gold, intending to sell our goods, they took some of our stock, fine lumber and mead, as well as 3 of our horses. When we arrived at Yronwood, and were asked for the toll, same as the other times, we complained. House Yronwood recompensed us to the sum of 200 Dragons for all of us, and promised to find the root of this.”

He hands you the leather case. Opening it, you see several sheets of parliament, the top one bearing signitures and symbols of 20 different merchants.

You put the documents to one side, Carth can look over these at a later date. Any lies will remain, and he can judge the validity of the claims. That was always more his thing, not yours.

“Lady Ynys, Ser Ryon, what do you seek here, beyond my freely given oath that House Blacksand is not violating your rights to the Boneway? Such word could come from a messenger, not a deputation of the heirs of two great Dornish houses.”

Ser Ryon gestures towards Deran.

“It is not our duty to pay for the mistakes of other Lords. We seek recompense for the costs actions of bandits from the road you are meant to police have caused. Obviously, some of the blame is shared, so recompense of 100 Dragons, half the amount we paid the merchants to cover the loss of their goods seems fair.”

Frowning, you inspect the married two, standing before you. You wish Carth was here, so someone with a mind for trade could advise you.

“I will send for my Chief of Scouts, to see if he knows of these bandits, or similar reports coming from merchants going to Shadowpeak. In the meantime, please, make yourselves comfortable.”

Calling a servant over, you instruct him to fetch the Chief of Scouts, but also hand him the leather case and tell him in a low voice to take the case to Carth first.

Lady Ynys and Ser Ryon seat themselves, and make small talk about raising young children, and how your family finds Dorne. After a few minutes, your Chief of Scouts, Ruger, enters. He bows to you, and then to the two guests.

“My Lady, how may I be of help?”

Nobles like things right away or else it's rude and shows we're weak and uncouth. Having people come right away shows we have capable peoples and also so we can catch them off guard and get over.
>>
I like this House and the potential this quest has. I just hope we don't overreach with the combat stuff, Lissara isn't a Sand Snake. Getting into some real political stuff in the highly political Dorne should be fun as well.

Plus it's funny to think of just how hated the Blacksands are. I wish Father was still around to give us snarky Obella comments.
>>
>>2807784
Or they could take it us being weak because we are relying on others for support. Or they could take it as rude that we're talking with our hubby or some commoner over them.

It doesn't matter though because they're all very weak justifications that assume the Yrons are pompous assholes who are easily impressed or dissatisfied. If that is the case, I don't think there is anything we could do to make them happy. I'd rather assume they are rational human beings who don't mind a little wait or draw all of their observations from one meeting.

We can still catch them off-guard later with any evidence and we can do it on our terms with people in place and ready. I'd also rather they leave with no knowledge concerning who in our house is important/good at certain things. Being underestimated is just as good, if not better, than them thinking us capable.

>>2807804
I also thoroughly enjoy this house and think the potential is huge. We have no marshal though so its on us to git gud at combat before our enemies come knocking. It should be one of our main focuses alongside repairing our diplomatic relations. War is a huge opportunity and our house has the power to make a play during it. It would be a waste to do nothing with it imo.
>>
>>2807827
Then get someone to do it for us. I'm really not interested in playing so hard against the setting in having a woman commander and god like fighter. Not every character has to be master of all.
>>
>>2807838
I agree with you. We're going to spread ourselves thin trying to do everything.

“Ruger, Lady Yronwood and Lord Arrylion have brought us news that bandits have been accosting merchants on the Boneway from our lands. Do you know anything of this, or reports of bandits near there?”

Ruger bows, and stands. A stormlander, he leads your scouts in the fields, and spends his time organising patrols of your land.

“My lady, I do not know of any specific activity near the Boneway on our land, but I have received a report about sightings of unknown men in the South-East. Also, the huntsman told me that he had found evidence of dead deer and goats near there, but no bodies. I would assume this is where the bandits are holed up, if they are within our lands. I could gather a more thorough report, but I would need funds to equip an expedition into the mountains.”

Lady Ynys smiles, and stands.
“Well, it would appear you have work to do. Now, as for your share of the recompense for the merchants. We have paid 200 Dragons already, simply giving us your contribution towards it, as a show of how serious this matter is, would suffice. Do you need time to gather the coin, or can we expect to return to Yronwood with coin in hand?”

Carth sits quietly for a few moments.

You hug Carth back, the two of you silent for several seconds, recovering from the emotional day you have had. Carth lets you go, and puts the case of documents on the table.

“I’m guessing this has something to do with why the Yronwoods were here? It says something about bandits, and value?”

“Yes, apparently bandits having been posing as toll collectors on the stretch of the Boneway near our road. Yronwood are blaming us, and apparently there are bandits near there. Yronwood wants us to pay 100 dragons in compensation to them for our share of compensating the merchants.”

“Probably a little high, looking at what goods were lost, though not from Yronwood’s end. In fact, they probably were happy to over pay, since they could plan to split the cost with us, and look better with the merchants. Not much we could do to get out of it, if you wanted to. What have you arranged with them?”

“I’ll pay them at a later day, once the bandits are dealt with. Ruger is heading into the mountains with the scouts to find exactly where the camp is. Then we’ll wipe them out.”

You lay your head on Carths shoulder, as he nods and rests his head on top of yours. A breif silence follows, before Carth speaks again.

“Carth, could you write to your father? He should know about Fathers death.”
Carth nods, and stands, heading out. As he leaves, you call for a servant to fetch the Harbourmaster, from where he is waiting. Returning to the Seat of Shadowpeak, you wait till the Harbourmaster, Alon Borring, enters. He bows low, before approaching the low dais.

“My Lady, there is trouble in Shadowpeak’s port. As you may be aware, many of the population left when your father took his seat, and some of the sea merchants bypass us for Yronwood. This has led to many of the warehouses down on the dock-front becoming unused, and 4 of them are now fairly dilapidated. We kept them standing in case trade would pick up again, but it has not. We now have several buildings unfit for purpose. I propose tearing down the dilapidated warehouses, and preparing to build something new in it’s place.”

Borring cocks his head towards you once he stops speaking. You feel your head throb slightly as you feel a headache coming on. Sighing, you lean forward.

“Is repair of the warehouses possible? If trade does return, it would be poor for us to have goods in the open, unable to be stored.”

“As they are, we cannot repair all of them with what we have. We could tear down 2 of the Warehouses, and shore up the others. It would be less expensive, but we would find it harder to build anything new in the new cleared land.”

“Yes, Maester. I would have you make a full report, not conjecture based on half-remembered knowledge.”

Maester Borrell bows, and walks away. Heading to the Solar, you enter, seeing Carth bent over his desk, quill moving across the paper in front of him. He looks up as you enter, and sprinkles some ash onto the surface of it, before blowing the excess off.

“The children are with their Nurse. I felt like some quiet to write this.”

He hands you the letter. It tells of your fathers death, how you have risen to the Seat of Shadowpeak and a general assessment of how the family is. He inquires after his brother, Ser Cortnay is fairing at Storms End, and how his father is handling his growing sickness. No politics is raised, the tone is familiar.

“We’re tearing down some of the warehouses at the dock, to repair the others.” you say, sitting down on the window seat. Carth nods, opening a ledger, and noting something down.

“Yes, Borring mentioned they were getting rather run down. Is there any more House business today, or are you free again?”

“House business is finished I think. Though I am still waiting on Borrell to report on what killed father.”

Carth nods again, and begins making notes in the ledger. You sit in the sun shining through the western window, closing your eyes.

“Well, this is the total costs accrued from maintaining the dock-front, the piers and such. I think if we cycled the docking, we could reduce this by..”

Suddenly, you wrap your arms around his neck, and swing around into his lap, kissing him passionately. Carth looks shocked, and kicks out his legs, his chair suddenly overbalancing, dropping the both of you onto the floor, Carth beneath you. Straddling him, you continue kissing him, enjoying how his eyes still look shocked and surprised. Rolling off of the chair, you end up in front of the empty fireplace, on-top of a rug Carth rather likes. As you begin pulling at the laces of his breeches, Carth rolls his eyes, and begins kicking off his boots….

SOME TIME LATER….

The two of you are lying on the floor, your arms wrapped around Carth’s back, as he lies facing the ceiling. There is a polite knock on the door. Carth carefully detaches your arms from where it is clutching onto his chest, and begins pulling his clothes back on. He picks up your dress from where it lies crumpled next to the window, where you threw it, and drops it ontop of you.

“Lissara, you need to get dressed.” he whispers. Pouting at him, you slip back into the dress, and smooth down your hair, seating yourself behind the desk. Carth goes to the door, and opens it, Maester Borrell’s voice coming through.

“My Lord, My Lady, I have found something fairly serious….”

Borrell walks through the door, stopping as he catches sight of the scattered papers, spilled ink, and ruffled state of the two of you. He continues speaking in a measured tone.

“I believe your father did not die of some parasite or illness. His bowels were bleeding, and his guts were inflamed. This is only consistent with one cause, a poison called Widow’s Blood. I believe your father was poisoned, by enemies of the House.”

Carth looks at you, his eyes wide with shock. A cold anger takes over your body, your headache returning with a vengeance…..

You wake to the sound of horses riding out of the castle, soft sun shining through the gauze hangings covering the windows. Carth rolls over, and you can see the thin red lines you scratched into his back in the night. You remember throwing several objects at walls, before almost dragging Carth to your chambers. Your head is clearer now, as you begin to pour water from your bedside, before stopping. The poisoner could still be in the castle, anything you eat or drink could be your death. Maester Borrell had assured you he would investigate the kitchen staff, and find out who had served your father a week ago.

Carth stirs and stands, stiffly pulling on his jerkin, wincing as he laces it up and it presses on his back. He stands, and walks to the door, calling for a servant to bring raw bacon and to get a small fir going. Turning back to you he shrugs.

“No sense in trusting food we haven’t cooked.”

After a breakfast of well water, slightly burned bacon, and toasted bread, the two of you head to the Solar. Borrell is already outside, two servants wearing aprons with him.

“Greetings my Lady, my Lord. These are the two cooks who prepared the family meal on the night he took ill. They arrived with your father, and I believe them to be trustworthy, but they have some information I believe you should hear.”

Stepping inside, you lean against the window seat, as Carth seats himself behind the desk. The older of the two cooks steps forward, and bows nervously.

“Well, m’Lady, there was a servant you see, some local lad who replaced one of the servants who fell ill.”

The other cuts in,

“Yes, m’Lady, he brought your Lord Fathers meal to him. He left the next day.”

And how does this local boy came to replace the servant and not someone already in the castle staff? On who’s recommendation? What’s his name and family?

We should send a couple of our veterans to watch him before bringing him. He might contact his co-conspirators to receive payment for his part in this or someone with actual knowledge might actually to dispose of him.

"What did he look like?"

"Well m'Lady, he was about 19 seasons, dark brown hair, dark olive skin, a salt dornishman. He's the son of the baker, the baker is a trusted provider of bread."

"Why wasn't another servant used? Why a local and not another member of the castle staff?"

"We'd already served the stew, and were finishing cutting up the lion when we found out the servant we'd sent for was ill. He was delivering the bread for the castle, and offered to take the meal, so it wouldn't be delayed."

Sighing, you turn to Carth.
"We should send veterans to watch his home. He might contact his co-conspirators."

Carth frowns.
"It was a week ago. If he is still there, he would have been paid already, when your father fell ill, surely?"

Borrell nods.
"It might be best to act quickly, before he realises something is amiss. Though the decision is yours, my Lady."

"Send veterans to tail him. His paymasters are more important."

"Very well, My Lady." Borrell says.

You are sitting with your children, some hours later, when Borrell enters the room, and approaches you.

"My Lady, I am afraid there is a slight problem. The sergeant of the soldiers you sent is outside. I gave him the description we were given and... well it's best he describes it."

Detaching Elia from where she is hanging from your arm, you walk with Borrell into the courtyard infront of the main gate. 5 men are standing there, and 1 steps forward and bows as you approach.

"My Lady. You Maester asked us to follow a Dark Haired, Salt Dornishman of around 19 seasons, the bakers son from the town. However, when we arrived, we found the baker's son is only 12 seasons, while the Baker is a Stoney Dornishman, and his wife Sand. The lad who delievered the bread was apparently travelling, looking for easy work, and because the main bread oven had broken, the baker offered to pay him to deliver the bread to the castle. He left some 4 days later, heading south west across the mountains."

Borrell looks at you.
"Do you wish me to organize a pursuit? A man on foot, even with a 3 day head-start can be tracked and caught on horseback. We still have some of the scouts, who can track him, we may be able to catch him."

"Borrell, send out a party. I want this man tracked down and brought back here."

"Yes, My Lady."

Borrell walks away, the soldiers following him. Stepping back inside, you head back up to the Solar. Inside, Carth stands from behind his desk, the children playing with their small wooden toys. Carth walks over to you and kisses your cheek, whispering in your ear.

"We shouldn't talk about the killer in front of the children."

Stepping back, as Elia covers her eyes and sticks her tongue out at the two of you, Carth speaks louder.

"We should make plans to use the land that's being cleared down in the Port. I'd like to build a new market, to begin drawing more trade back, but there may be something else you want."

"You are right, Husband. A Marketplace would be the best, drawing trade into our port again, especially with the poor relations between the Stormlands and the Dornish."

Carth raises his eyebrows.
"I didn't think you paid any attention to me when I spoke of trade."

Sticking your tongue out, you kiss him, to a visible, exaggerated retching from Elia.

"I do listen oh Husband, its simply that I often have more enjoyable things to do shortly after you start speaking."

The two of you spend a good few hours drawing layouts and plans, before abandoning them and playing with your children. The shadows of the room are lengthening, and the twins and Elia have been sent to bed when two soldiers enter, still dusty from the road.

"My Lady, My Lord." You recognise the Sergeant you spoke to, who had left on the pursuit.

"We found a small camp, some days journey on foot up the mountains. There was a freshly dug grave, partly covered with brush and fire ash. Upon digging it up, we found a body that matched the description of the boy we were chasing, with its throat slit. In its pocket was a small bottle, which Maester Borrell examined and believes contained the poison. Other than a fire, we only found a set of horse tracks heading into the mountains, that soon went onto rock, where we could not track. We reburied the body."

Carth glances at you, before sighing with disappointment.

>>2809136
>>2809138
"Where could they have gone from there, Sergeant? Could you catch up with the killer?"

"Once they were on the rocks, even with dogs, they could have gone to any of the mountain passes, or even rejoined the road to the Prince's Pass. And as for catching them, we only thought we could catch the killer because he was on foot. On horse, without a path to follow? We would have to be extremely lucky, my Lady, I'm sorry."

"When do you think the boy was killed? If you could recognise him, it could not have been long?"

"More than a day, my Lady. Beyond that, the horse tracks looked a few days old, so maybe 2 days? But I would not put any certainty on it."

Frustrated, you dismiss the soldiers, thanking them for their diligence. Carth pours you some wine, and the two of you sit in contemplation, till you retire to bed.

The next two days go by, mainly centering around your Fathers burial. He is left in state for a day, his body preserved and dressed, though his face still looks thin and stretched from the poison. He is interred in a tomb in the small chapel in the castle, and life goes on. You are practicing with some of your soldiers in the courtyard when the main portcullis is raised, and Ruger and several scouts ride through. They are coated with dust, and look badly sunburned. The scouts begin to dismount, as grooms run forward and begin taking the horses into the stables. The scouts then walk to the well, and begin drawing up a bucket of water. Ruger looks around the courtyard, and begins walking over to you, limping slightly as he does so. Bowing, he winces slightly as he begins to speak.

"My lady, I am pleased to say we were successful, we have found where these bandits are lurking. We also managed to get a good look at their numbers, and it is far worse than we expected."

Ruger pauses, as one of his scouts hands him the well bucket, which Ruger lifts to his mouth and drinks from. Handing the bucket back, he continues.

"We went south east for a day, and met some mountain folk, who were hunting small rabbits and vermin up there. We paid them some gold, and they pointed us to several edible burdock patches that had been pulled up and cleared of adult plants. We followed game trails from this and eventually came across an old, unmaintained road leading west-east. Following it, it climbed a mountain, and we found a small wooden stockade around the entrance to an old mine, one that looks unused."

Ruger crouches down, and using the tip of his dagger, draws in the dirt a semi-circle with a break at the apex.

"We waited till night fall, and two of my scouts snuck up to the wall, and climbed over. The bandits didn't seem too alert, and my men found that inside the mine was a larger camp, with nearly 150 men inside. Upon seeing this, my men snuck out of the mine again, and apparently overheard the two gate guards saying they were going to be leaving soon, before the month ends. However, as we left, we were discovered by a group of bandits returning to the camp. We fought our way out, but several of my men were injured. We managed to escape thanks to our horses, and made haste back to here."

Looking at the scouts, you do note several have strips of cloth wrapped around limbs, while one has his shirt off, and is clutching at a wrap of cloth that is stained a dark red.
>>
--- 30 minutes later---

Carth, Ruger, Borrell, and you are standing in the Solar, looking at the small map Borrell has drawn of the camp at Ruger's description. Carth looks anxious, pacing back and forth in-front of the empty fireplace.

"We need to move quickly, My lady" says Borrell. "We cannot allow these bandits to flee, or set themselves up somewhere else."

"The problem is, our Cavalry can't fight from horseback up there. It was barely enough for our horses to ride around up there, let alone fight." says Ruger, point to the wall. "There's no easy gap to hit aside the gate, and the mountain above it looks sheer and steep."

Carth stops pacing, and turns to look at all of you.

"Fighting into a defensive front is something I know is suicide with even numbers. Can we find some other way to approach?"

"Not without more scouting my Lord, and the other scout parties have yet to return" says Ruger. "They shouldn't be more than 2 days though, we planned to only spend four days out there before returning and regrouping."

"What about ambushing them as they leave? Surely we would be better served fighting them outside of their hole?"

"That is true, My lord, but we don't know when they are planning to leave. We would need to be up in the mountains for several weeks, and if they found us at any point, we could be vulnerable to a surprise attack."

Borrell looks towards you. "My lady, what do you order?"

>Prepare an attack now, to leave today and make all haste to the mine?

"We should wait for the scouts to return. Not only will their expertise be essential in scouting properly, but their numbers will be useful in fighting the bandits."

"Yes, my Lady. I'll prepare the scouts who are here, and get their wounds treated." says Ruger, bowing, and leaving.

Borrell heads to the small bookcase him and Carth have made of ledgers, and pulls one down. As he hands it to you, you can see lists of names, with units next to them. It appears to be a list of all the soldiers your house employs.

"We need to decide who will be brought to assault the bandits. Our men are probably of better quality, but numbers can be a deciding factor. The warship crews are impractical, the few men we would gain would be hopeless at fighting in close quarters, they are drilled in naval fighting. We have 20 cavalry, mainly men-at-arms, heavily armed, but they would probably need to dismount. The Infantry are ideal for this, and should definitely be brought. The Scouts are going to be coming with us, but are not suited to combat. They can fight, but against stiff opposition, would probably have to retreat. The Garrison are well equipped, similar to the Infantry, but are trained completely differently. They would be far less effective on the attack, and not defending the castle. Speaking of the castle, we will should leave some soldiers behind, though if if you think it safe, we can leave it without a garrison."

"We'll take the Infantry and the Cavalry. The Cavalry will need to dismount when we attack, but that shouldn't hinder them too much. We'll outnumber the bandits, if Ruger's report is accurate, but our forces are well trained."

Borrell stands, and picks up the ledger.
"I'll speak to the unit Sergeants, and tell them to prepare, once the scouts return."

"Before you go, are there any Hedge Knights in the town? We are lacking a military commander now my father is with the Seven, so some a skilled sword arm would not be amiss."

Borrell pauses, and turns back.

"I believe there was a party of two and their squires who came here some days ago. You and Carth were attending the vigil of your father, my lady, and we thought the bandits were only less than 50, so I sent them away. They didn't seem particularly well equipped, but their horses and squires looked well fed, so they can't be incompetent. A Ser Ascar Bole, from Lord Harroway's town, and a Ser Darvin Doggett, from Gulltown. They said they were heading to Cider Hall, for a wedding tourney in three weeks. They were heading along the road to Vulture's Roost, planning to camp there while they waited for a fellow knight who was coming from Kingsgrave, up the Princes Pass. They should still be there."

Carth nods, and pulls down a map of the Red Mountains, tapping Vulture's Roost.

Kissing your cheek, Carth heads out, Borrell following him, promising to tell the Cavalry to prepare immediately to act as your escort. Heading to your chambers, you realise you need to decide on the impression you want to make. Arriving wearing your traveling gear would be the most practical, the ride would be more comfortable, but you would not look very impressive. You decide to go as you are dressed. You are not a good enough warrior to use that to swing the opinion of trained knights based on it, and hopefully they will be more swayed by your feminine wiles.

As you head outside, you can see your sand steed being made ready, while several men are pulling on mail shirts and gathering weapons. You call for a servant to fetch your riding gloves, and to put your spear and shield onto your horses saddle. Your stiletto is sheathed at your waist. After 10 minutes, all the horses are ready, and the escort mount up, and follow you out of the castle, forming around you.

The ride to Vulture's Roost is a dirt road, often used by foot traffic to travel between the Boneway and the Prince's Pass. It is slightly to thin for your full party, but you have no trouble as you spend a good 6 hours riding west. The sun is low in the sky, as Vulture's Roost appears in the distance.

On the border between the Stormlands and Dorne, no-one knows what house used to live in Vulture's Roost, which was ruined during the Conquest, by the army marching in support of the conquest of Dorne. Its shape can still be seen, however, easily as large as Riverrun, with a commanding place on a plateau of rock in the foothills of the Red Mountains. Larger than Shadowpeak, it looms in the distance as you approach.

You can see a small fire, flickering inside one of the half-collapsed towers, and can half-hear words on the wind. As you ride closer, you can see 3 horses, stabled in a small stone room at the base of the tower. A mess of tack and gear lies at their feet, and a young man is running a brush over one of the horses flanks. You can hear 3 distinct voices from the fire, and now can smell some sort of cooking stew. As you ride up, the young man gasps and runs in to the tower, and soon, three figures emerge.

One is wearing a breastplate, covered by a tabard with a green bird on it, with a long two-handed axe in his hand. His face is framed by greying hair, and his cheeks look flushed in the fire light, and his eyes are beady as he gazes up at the mounted men. The next steps past him, buckling a belt with a longsword on over scale armour, the buckles still undone. A large shield sits on his back, and his hair is blonde. The third figure looks at the escort, a morning star resting on his shoulder. Unlike the other two, he is not wearing armour, but his clothing is red and yellow, and other finer make than the other two. He looks Dornish, and his hair is missing on one side of his head, where a long thin scar is traced over his ear.

You dismount and walk forward, your dress rustling on the sand. All three knights stop and look surprised, having expected a fight, or at least some sort of face-off. You move in front of the cavalry, your dagger winking in the firelight.

"Greetings, Ser Knights, I am Lady Blacksand, Lady of Shadowpeak. Ser Darvin, Ser Ascar, I apologise that you missed me at Shadowpeak, but my Father's vigil was commanding my attention. However, I seek your aid now, against a large force of bandits that have fortified themselves in my lands. While you are aiding us, food, shelter, and the comfort of Shadowpeak will be available to you, for as long as the threat of the bandits is present."

The three knights glance at each other as you finish speaking. The older man with grey hair whistles, and nods.
"I'd come to serve your father, given how we share a benefactor. But I'll never pass up a chance to lop some limbs for good food and shelter. If you'll keep the wine flowing, Darvin Doggett will bloody his axe in your name, Lady."
He sways slightly, before taking a skin from his belt and drinking something from it. The tall blonde knight frowns, and goes down on one knee, bowing his head.
"Lady Blacksand, I am moved by your words, and by your troubles at this time of grief. Robbers and thugs of all rank are a bane upon the land, and I, Ser Ascar, will gladly drive them out for you!"
The final knight smiles at you, his head cocked to one side. He is far younger than the others, looking younger than even you.
"I met your father once. He came to Hellholt, to speak about Romarn marrying his daughter, who I guess would have been you. That was before I left of course, but I'd be delighted to see where Romarn might have ended up living. Maybe father will forgive me for killing his Paramour when I was born if I spill enough blood. If you want me, I'll hang my shield on your wall."
Ser Ascar glances at the younger knight, before speaking.
"Forgive Ser Clatton Sand, my lady. His unusual upbringing has caused him to forget his manners."
Clatton laughs, and tosses his morning star to the ground, before sitting down.
"At least I'm not kneeling with armour sliding off me."

Anyone thinking of ideas to get the Bandits out of the mines? Im thinking we can use some small oil/tar barrels and just roll them in. We can Rains of Castamere these asshats. "Ser Knights, I would be glad to invite you all back to aid us against the bandits. Your shields will be welcome against them, and with your aid, I am sure they will soon be nothing but bodies on the sand."

Ser Ascar rises, somewhat uncomfortably as his armour shifts on him.
"My Lady, I offer you succor at our fire for the night, for the Father calls us to aid those who need it, and the no-one should face the night alone."

You see Darvin rolling his eyes at the language, but he does step forward.
"Its a long ride back to Shadowpeak, and riding that road in the dark is one short step to a broken neck. Stay if you want, I don't care."

You thank the three of them, and your men begin finding places to stable the horses and unpacking the small amount of trail rations they brought. You join the three knights at their fire, where the two squires jump up, seeing you more clearly. They have been stirring a small pot of stew, and Ser Ascar offers you a bowl. It is chicken broth, filling but simple. Ser Darvin continues swigging from the skin, while Ser Clatten eats quickly, before beginning to set up a tent, next to where the two squires are doing the same. Your escort have lade out bedrolls, and Ser Ascar offers you his tent, saying the ground is plenty comfortable for him.

"Does Ser Clatten not have a squire?" you enquire

"No, his uncle saw him trained and equipped, but Ser Ulwyck never liked the boy for killing his paramour." Darvin says. He takes out a small flute, and begins piping a tune, which you recognise as the Maiden and the Bear.

You soon tire of the out of tune pipe, and walk over to where Ser Clatten has just finished raising his tent.

"Ser Clatten, you said you were from Hellholt? And Ser Darvin said your Uncle equipped you?"

"Yes, Lady. My father is Ser Ulwyck Uller, brother of Lord Uller. He whelped me on his paramour, and I killed her when I was born, an act my father has never forgiven. He refused to name me, till Ellaria said it was a cruelty beyond even the Ullers. The Prince thought it was a good jest, so threatened to duel my father over him not naming me. Hence, I was named. At Ellaria's request, I was raised alongside Romarn, and taught to fight as a knight. But when I became 14, my Uncle asked me to leave, to seek my fortunes, and to keep the peace between him and his brother. So I roamed the roads, killing bandits and knights for whatever Lord will pay me."

"How did you meet Ser Ascar and Ser Darvin? They said to my Maester they were waiting for you here."

"Shortly after I left Hellholt, there was a tourney at Kingsgrave, a few months before your father made the Red Mountains a little more red. I heard some Reach knight making a comment about how bad the Dornish Red was, so I decided to soak him in it. The cup I chose was Ser Darvin, but he blamed the Reachman. Ascar pulled Darvin off the man, and apologised to me, since Darvin had knocked my food on the floor. When Lord Manwoody asked us to leave due to the incident, I came along with them. I went home to see how things were, and to annoy my father, hence why I wasn't with them when they came to Shadowpeak."

"How do you fight? I see the morning star, but that does not tell the full truth of how one fights."

"I'm guessing you fight in the Dornish style? Like Oberyn, spear and shield, judging from what I saw on the sand steeds saddle? I'm something of an aberration in Dorne, I trained in Scale Armour, and when I visited Hellholt, Ellaria had sent some Half-plate from Sunspear, something about us both being Sands of Hellholt. Very un-dornish, but it means the other realms find me more palatable."

"And why did you agree to serve House Blacksand? Given our... my father's actions, and my Father's method of ascension to Lord?"

Clatten shifts his shield over, showing you the chained, silver dragon head on it.
"I personally don't give a fig about the Targaryeans. Hellholt killed one dragon, and would have killed more if they'd come. The Martells hate Robert, but moreso hate the Lannisters. Your father was a little low on the pecking order for revenge, since it was Elia's death they hate, not Rhaegars. As for the killing of the soldiers? You're surrounded by hostile houses, with a 14 year-old daughter, just married to a man who is, shall we say, no Barristan Selmy. Making everyone fear you seems to be a good way of ensuring none of your enemies try anything military. Poison on the other hand..."

You exhale sharply at his glibness about your father, and at how he knows about the circumstances of your fathers death but Clatten seems not to notice.

"Speaking of Manwoody, how was the road? Any lords hiring mercenaries? And what have you heard from the Capital?"

Clatten grins.
"Not that I heard, though I'd doubt if Manwoody had the dragons to do that. Worn out mines and empty mountains don't scream extravagent riches. That road between the Bone-way and the Princes Pass was their best money maker, and while they're not starving, I doubt they're in a position to buy an army. As for Sunspear, I know Prince Doran has just presented his daughter with suitors. According to Ellaria, she threw a "Princesly Tantrum" to borrow Prince Obyren's words, because he showed her only old and decrepit fools. No idea whats going on between them there."

"Well Ser Clatten, I bid you good night. We ride for Shadowpeak in the morning."

Clatten inclines his head, and crawls inside his tent, as you move to the tent next to it, where Ser Ascar has dragged out a long Lance and high saddle.

>>
>>2811262
Honestly, I haven't decided, since most don't reach this time. I've always felt quests struggle because they run out of events if they start at Robert's crowning. Filling nearly 8 years of stuff is tricky, because the Greyjoy Rebellion is the one thing everyone aims for. It's partly why in my tabletop ASOIAF group, we play alt-histories, like a Dance of the Dragons where all the Targs and their dragons die, while Kings Landing becomes a ruin, filled with the remnants of the Pyromancers, and the other kingdoms split off, or a War of the Ninepenny Kings where Maelis has magic on his side and sends plagueships to every major port.

As for canon houses, I'll add them if I feel like it/remember. What I do know, is that Malroy would hate you with a burning passion.
>>
>>2811283
Well, the other asoiaf quests were okay, I've only read a few of them, most of them I didn't finish, so, it's not a big deal. Also, yeah, I can see that being the norm. I imagine it's mostly the QM's fault, though, because players would want to le fix all the le canon problems and then while they want shit to happen, they wait and do monotonous lord shit cuz fucking realms peace. QM's also typically quit quests cuz it was too much work or something came up or they just run out of steam/writers block. Pls don't be a gay boy, QM.

You spend an uncomfortable night sleeping in the tent of Ser Ascar, the hard ground very different from your bed. As the sun rises, you hear the sounds of your escort making ready to leave. A young boy, you recognise as one of the squires can be seen through the entrance to the tent, standing nervously outside. Getting up, you realise your clothing, that you slept in, are crumpled and untidy. Smoothing them as best you can, you emerge, Ser Ascar's squire bowing and mumbling a greeting. The makeshift camp is being brought down. Ser Darvin is on his horse already, and throws half of a loaf towards you.

"If you want to make time today, you'll need to eat on the ride."

He seems slightly drunk, swaying as his horse sidesteps and shuffles around. Before long, all the camp is packed up, and the squires are seated behind their knights. As the larger group rides away, you get a better look at the Hedge Knights. Ser Darvin looks older, his hair almost entirely grey, though his body is heavily muscled. His squire is wearing a mail shirt, and has a functional looking battleaxe tied to his back. Ser Ascar, now wearing his armour properly, rides carrying a long tourney lance, his squire carrying the longsword. You can see marked in it's hilt a seven-pointed star. Ser Clatten's armour can be seen strapped to his horse, a normal shield slung on his back.

Ser Ascar rides up next to you as the escort rides out of Vulture's Roost. He bows his head respectfully to you, as his horse matches pace with yours.

"Greeting my lady. I trust the Mother watched over you last night."

"I am sure I slept better than if I had been outside. Your generous offer is most gracious Ser. Tell me Ser, how did you come to be a Hedge Knight? You have the speech of someone born to knighthood."

"I was a foundling, raised by the Seven in Lord Harroways town. I always had a love for the tales of knighthood, and the septon in charge of the Sept had served as a soldier before he took orders. He trained me in the sword."

Ser Ascar looks away slightly embarrassed.

"I disobeyed him and snuck into the melee of the wedding tourney of Lord Roote. While I was permitted to enter, the Septon forbade it. I won, mainly thanks to a slippery patch of grass, and as reward, Lord Brax, father of the bride knighted me, and took me into his service. I fought for him for several years, till the Overthrowing of the Mad King. It was then I saw what was expected of me in the Westerlands."

>>2813049
You rest a hand on his arm, and look intently at him. Faith seems important to him, so that would the best avenue.
"Ser Ascar, the Crone tells us a burden shared is a burden halved. What was demanded of you?"

"I was part of the sack of Kings Landing. I saw my Lords Lord ride to the gates, lie to his king, and sack the city. When the order was given, I thought Lord Tywin wanted us to secure the city, that is was simply a ruse of war, but when his soldiers began looting and burning, I knew something was wrong. I hurried to the Sept of Baelor, and slew three soldiers of House Brax who sought to enter the Septa's quarters. I was stripped of my knighthood by Lord Brax, who discharged me from his service. I was in the city as King Robert arrived, and Lord Sunglass was riding with him. He heard of my actions from the Septas when he went to pray, and he sought me out. He re-knighted me, and persuaded a Septon to anoint me, despite my disgrace of being cast out of knighthood. I owe him everything. He could not bring me into his service, but his support has seen me enter several tournaments and service of noble lords. It is why I chose to serve you, My Lady. Your cause is just, and I did not find guile in your words."

Ser Ascar falls quiet, seemingly surprised at how verbose he had become. He bows his head to you, and slows his horse, moving away from you on the road. He seems to be desiring his own company, and you are not going to risk loosing a knight over curiosity.

The rest of the ride goes well, with Shadowpeak appearing on the horizon shortly after midday. You see ahead of you on the road several horsemen, who slow and reveal themselves to be your scouts, returning from the mountains on the border with the Manwoody lands. Your party bolstered, it is early afternoon when you ride into Shadowpeak, to find out from Ruger that all the scouts have returned while you were away. Carth is somewhat surprised to see the three knights, and once you have changed into clean clothes, asks you about them.

"Well, I know very little about Ser Darvin, the knight with the green seagull. He seems gruff and rude, but he apparently earned his knighthood in a similar manner to how Father earned his lordship, so he must be a competent fighter. I spoke at length with Ser Clatten, the one on the sand steed. He's the bastard of the brother of the Lord of Hellholt, and apparently remains in contact with his cousin, Ellaria Sand, the paramour of Prince Obyren. He seems to be typical of the Ullers reputation though, given how he has Meraxes' head on his shield. Mad, but well equipped and armed."

Carth whistles low.
"I could see either of them going rogue. Are you certain its safe to bring them into the castle?"

"I think Ser Ascar would keep them in line. He's very pious, and apparently killed his lords men defending the Sept of Balor during the sack of Kings Landing. However, I think he's more a tourney knight, so keeping him here might be tricky, while we are not being invited to local weddings and tourneys."

Carth nods.
"Well, we'll see how well they do, and then decide if we want to bring any of them on. They'll be useful against the bandits, your trip was definitely worth it if they are as skilled fighters as they claim."

You and Carth are eating an evening meal with your children, in your quarters, when Borrell enters, bowing.

"My lady, Ser Darvin wishes to speak to the lord and you. He says he's reviewed your infantry and wishes to discuss deployments. He does, however, stink of cheap wine. I think he spent the afternoon in the port."

Carth sighs, and looks to you.

>Agree to speak to him?
>Tell him to wait till tomorrow?

He should sober up before speaking to us

Sober up first. Drunk men are often frisky.

"Borrell, ask him to return tomorrow. If he's drunk, I don't want him around my children, or me. I'll see him tomorrow morning, before we set off to the bandit camp."

Carth looks thankful, and returns to eating. Turning back to your food, you see Elia pointing at Calrins bowl, where half of what was left has spilled onto the table, and the boy is currently poking his brother in the ribs, repeatedly. Carth frowns, and hits his knife against the wooden table, glaring at the twins. Elia looks smug, before returning to finishing the small amount of broth left in her bowl, while Calrin sulks under Carths glare.

You hear a loud clatter from outside the door, and an indistinct voice you think is Darvins fading away. You catch the opening bars of Brave Danny Flint, which soon fades from hearing. Sighing, Carth calls for a servant to clear up the spillage, and finishes his wine.

The next morning, you can hear the sounds of horses whinnying and men moving about in the courtyard. Carth had woken up before you, and left you a note saying he'd asked for food to be sent to the Solar. Heading there, you see your husband pulling on his breastplate, his crossbow freshly polished with nut oil resting against the desk. He looks up as you enter, and nods his head towards a small plate of fruit and a goblet of wine on his desk.

"I thought we'd need something to eat before we left, and we need to talk about how we're going to approach this assault."

Your ringmail is hanging on the back of a chair, and as you pull it on, you think about what to say.

>Agree, and begin to plan?
>Agree, but say you'll talk on the ride, where the Hedge Knights can contribute?
>Try to persuade Carth to stay (Persuasion Charm)

As much as we want him to come, we need someone here during this crazy time.

How far away is the mine?

I was thinking about sending the scouts ahead to ensure our path is clear of ambushes and making sure our approach goes unwitness. But I hadn't thought further than that.

"We do need to, but we'll talk on the ride." you say, pulling on your ring mail. "That way, the knights can contribute."

Carth nods, then curses as his breastplate slips off. You walk over, and pull the breastplate back up, and tighten the straps. Carth smiles in thanks, and kisses you, before he picks up his crossbow, and heads towards the courtyard. Following him, you see Ser Darvin dunking his head into a horse trough, while soldiers mill around him. Ser Ascar is running a whetstone down his blade, while Ser Clatten is watching Ser Darvin with a look of pity. Seeing you, Ser Clatten straightens up, and saunters over to you.

"My lady, My lord. I fear Ser Darvin is not up to speaking this morning. He ate something that disagreed with him..."

The sarcasm is clear in Ser Clattens tone, but Ser Darvin still mounts his horse, albeit looking green around the face. Riding to the gate, you and Carth lead the small column out, dust filling the air as the infantry march behind the cavalry, as you head onto the path south, towards the abandoned mineworks.

>Thats all for today, I need to be up early tomorrow. I'll see you all then.

Wew, idk why we rejected Darvin, many soldiers operate drunk just fine and we've sailed the narrows seas for years, we're used to such peoples.
>>
>>2813349
Thank you for running.
New thread tomorrow?
>>2813368
As such, we know drunk people are more sexually loose and we would probably have a difficult time resisting with our Vice.
>>
>>2813368
Not when we're with the kids tho
>>
With us being licentious and fucking Carth every chance we get, do we need to roll for pregnancy every day?
>>
>>2813452
Oh you don't roll for that.
>>
>>2813452
Rest assured, I'm aware of the probability

b-b-b-but that's a sin!

Not in Dorne, anal capital of the world.

>We have gone a full update without fucking the brains out of our husband

Thats the real tragedy.
>>
>>2813601
We really don't have enough time unless. Perhaps celebratory sex after killing the bandits?

New Thread tomorrow, I've got some stuff I need to do tonight.
