“… and the rocket’s red glare! The bombs bursting in air! Gave proof through the night! That our flag was still there!”

Both teams were assembled near the field of battle, near the spectator grandstands. Used to be that maybe a few hundred people would show up to personally watch the matches. Now it was more like several thousand, not to mention the millions possibly watching at home. You could see the camera drones fly-by in the dusty desert wind as you and everyone else looked to the American flag flapping in the breeze. To the other side were Meryl Hoffmeister and her team of Canadian tankers, saluting the Canadian flag proudly flying next to the American. “O’ Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave!”

It’s the first time honestly that you sing the Star-Spangled Banner with real passion. You were on the world stage now.

“O’er the land of the free! And the home of the brave!”

You, Griselda, and Iris shake hands with Meryl Hoffmeister herself as you all stand before the viewing screens. “These girls have been great to me,” says Meryl. “They managed to get me all the way up here. By God, I never thought I’d make it to any kind of finals before I graduated. But here we are.”

Griselda smirks. “Shame we’ll have to knock you out of it, Meryl.”

“Aw, so confident!” Meryl gently punches Griselda on the shoulder. “All of you should be. I didn’t come all this way for an easy victory.” She points to Griselda, wagging her finger under her chin. “I expect great things out of you, GrisGris.” She points to you and Iris as well. “And from your two little pixies here.”

Iris snorts, taking a sip of tea. “A lady does not shy away from challenges.”

“Obviously.” Meryl smiles proudly. She looks to you. “Alright, Ellie. Give me your best shot. What trash-talk do you have me? None of that qui vivra verra stuff.”

“The only shot that matters is the one I’m going to put into your tank, Meryl,” you say.

“Ssss, ouch.” Meryl clutches her chest, mockingly hurt. “You got me.” She snickers a little, patting you on the arm a bit. “Heh. Alright, tough guy. We’ll see each other on the field, alright?” You nod, smiling back. All of you shake hands again quickly, and to that Meryl gives a two-finger salute and marches off. You fold your arms, looking at Griselda.

Griselda says, “Meryl’s in good spirits.”

“Isn’t that bad?” says Iris. “Commander with good morale is going to fight harder.”

“We’ll have to see what happens.” Griselda looks to you. “You know the plan?” You nod. “Alright. My guess is that if you do meet Meryl in the city, try to close in as quick as you can. Long barrel on a Firefly can get caught on a lot of things.” No kidding. You’ve watched Kelly’s Heroes. “And hey, Ellie.” Griselda grabs your arms, grinning. “Good luck out there, alright? You too, Iris.” Griselda and Iris give a simple nod to each other. But to you, Griselda bestows a kiss on your cheek. “Try not to die.” With that, she takes her leave too to talk to the judges.

Iris says, “I’ll be with my crew if you need me.” She checks her watch. “We have an hour before match start. Try not to waste it.”

“Claudia!” Claudia St. Simon and her crew are busy giving the last polishing touches on their Panther tank. “Are you excited for the off?”

She grins, you can see the trembling in her knees. “Yep!”

She is not excited at all. You look at the rest of her crew members. They immediately go into the tank and hide. Yeah. They’re scared as shit. “Look. I know this isn’t exactly the best way to introduce you all to Tankery and everything, but we do need the numbers. And personally, I think you’ll do just fine.”

Claudia continues grinning. “Or we’ll end up costing the team the victory in the most hilariously pathetic fashion and we’ll completely disgrace the name of our party and our group and our ideals! Have you ever had something you believed in so hard but nobody ever takes you seriously because of something stupid you did in the past!” She grabs you, going nose to nose to you. “I have once! It’s the reason I’m attending LGA and not attending George Washington Military Academy! They’re insane! Insane I tell you!”

Okay, she’s freaking out.

“Not to mention those freaks who think social darwinism is somehow applicable to class struggle. Class is decided on a number of circumstances that has nothing to do with birthright!”

“Look, just stay calm. Stay in the back. No harm done. Panther’s a good tank for that. And worse comes to worse, just stick with Griselda or Iris.”

“Why not you?” asks Claudia.

“I am the exact opposite of stay in the back, Claudia,” you say bluntly. “You’d probably get chopped to pieces before you get a shot off.” Thankfully, Claudia doesn’t seem to see that as a challenge. She lets go of you then gently dusts off where she grabbed you. At least she’s being polite now. “Look, nobody is going to get through their first match unscathed. Even if you make it through, trust me, you won’t be the same.”

Claudia says, “Regardless of what happens, the people will not fail you!” She salutes you, clicking her heels. “You can trust me in that.” You salute her back, and to that she turns back to her tank and gets back to work on cleaning it.

“Ellie!” Denise pulls up in her Kettenkrad, handing you your tank helmet. “Match is about to start. You ready?”

Griselda calls you all over the radio. “Alright, girls listen up. Meryl’s not going to want an easy victory and neither do I. We’re going to give them the match of their lives and I expect the same from them. I don’t want any mistakes and I don’t want any lollygagging about. We have LGA’s spirit within us, and as long as we have that we will win! Understand!”

“Yeah!” Everyone calls out in return.

The flare shoots out, signaling the start of the match. “Alright! On the bounce!”

You grab onto the hatch, taking a deep breath. You pull Oryola’s gloves out of your pockets, then take a good long look at them. How far you’ve come. You squeeze them tight, then shove them back into your pockets. “Alright, Josephina. Take us out slow.”

Circling South gives us the best chance of getting eyes on them as they move towards the city, going off their start point. Our heavy guns (IS-2, Jackson, JagdP, JagdT, Pershing, with Iris in command) Should try for that high ground around the SW section of route N1, from there they can have good range on the enemy moving in, while able to use the slope to disengage and cover themselves from artillery retaliation.

Meryl will likely try to close the gap, but not to the extent that she’s brawling with people. No, her definite destination is the city. There she can create entire killzones out of streets and lanes and use the cover of the buildings to essentially appear and disappear. Even with all the brawling experience you have, the city will simply equalize things. Out in open ground, Meryl will likely actually suffer. While she may be one of the best – if not the best- shots in all of Tankery, best shots don’t matter against six or seven tanks at once firing in the same general direction and reasonably spaced out so ricochets don’t bounce into each other.

Your tanks start moving to the south, which include yourself, Dalia, Lyra, and Elyse. Everyone else moves east towards the city.

“What’s that in the distance?” asks Lyra.

“Dust cloud,” says Elyse. “They must be on the move.” You take a look through your binoculars. A huge plume of dust has risen in the east. You check your map. Definitely to the south of those large hills. And judging by the size of that cloud, it’s at least most of the team moving. Maybe even all of them.

“What do you want us to do?” asks Lyra.

You take the tanks further east. You grab a scarf and wrap it around your mouth and nose to keep the dust from getting in, along with pulling the goggles on your helmet down too. Stack too turns out to get a look at what’s going on. Then she points something out across your side. “Ellie, over there!” You take a look to your left to the northeast.

Running along the road northeast is a large single column of tanks. Fireflies bringing up the front and rear, and in the middle was Meryl herself, the flag on her engine block giving her away. Damn. You can see her, but she’s quite far away. You look forward again.

Not to mention she’s sending tanks out. You count them off. You count five Grizzly tanks. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to your team. They’re amateurs and they’ll likely fold in real close combat with all of you. But you have Meryl right there in your sights. You could take shots at her now, maybe even charge her. But given that the entire team is right there… This is prime meatshield opportunity in the most morbid sense. They’ll likely sacrifice tanks to ensure her survival. Which is what they’re doing now. Those five Grizzlys approaching you are probably just to delay you until she can disappear into the city.

You take a couple of shots at Meryl from a distance. All the way out here though, they’re able to move out of the way and dodge effectively. Seems Meryl’s taught them how to maneuver under fire at least. A few of the Grizzlies move up to her side, covering her up. Damn. You know you’re not going to take Meryl here, not by a long shot.

You look over and see the Grizzlies approaching. “Alright, disengage. Let’s move it out.”

The Grizzly tanks are not fast by any means. They’re just regular Shermans with a few touch ups and modifications from the regular Sherman line if you remember correctly. So they’re not likely to catch you in a straight race. And yet they pursue you. Fine, if they want to be pulled away from any potential help, that’s their prerogative. It means more kills for you.

“Ellie, we’re moving into the city,” says Griselda. “We’re gonna stick to the outskirts though. I’m sending Benny, Suvorov, and Kathy in first to recon ahead.”

Iris says, “I’ll be taking the heavies in once we have a foothold first. The casemates will come in behind us.”

“I’m not moving in for safety’s sake,” says Griselda. “I’ll keep Hadley here to cover me.”

Fair enough. Alright. You take another look. Seems like Meryl’s moving into the city and fast.

Seems a little bit of urban combat is how this is going to be decided.

You roll onto the asphalt then have all the tanks turn around and face towards the incoming Grizzly tanks. They’re not quite within range just yet, probably about a kilometer or more out. But you have time to take stock on the situation. They’re not coming in anytime soon considering they’re medium tanks. You pull out the map and take stock of the situation so far.

Griselda has sent in a few tanks into the city to establish a little foothold. Meryl has also made it into the city, and she’s made it in with superior numbers. It’s likely that Meryl will try to carve up the team piecemeal through urban combat. Even with her team’s supposed inexperience, that inexperience is equalized by the tight corridors of city combat. Anything about armor penetration, armor thickness, angling and sloping is going to matter very little when your combat ranges are less than twenty meters.

With five Grizzly tanks coming to meet you and your little detachment, that means twenty-five tanks in total are going to oppose the team inside the city. Not good all things considered. Considering Griselda is holding at the outskirts, she knows this too. She’s being cautious. Rushing in too fast will mean chaos. But going in too slow means they have time to pick out hiding spots, dig in, camouflage themselves, all that stuff.

Right. What to do now?

“Advance up and take them out.”

“Roger!” everyone calls out.

Your tanks advance up off the highway and start coming in towards the Grizzly tanks. When they see this, they immediately freeze and start firing. The shots go wide, ineffectually so. “Fire!” you order.

“Firing!” yells Winona. The 77mm cannon sends a shell down range and right into one of the Grizzly’s turret rings. A white flag pops up.

“Ha! Two kills in one!” yells Lyra.

“Don’t get too cocky now,” you say. Time to wait. You take another look at the map. Meryl’s defenses are likely to be shored up in the eastern part of the city. And judging by how quiet it is on Griselda’s end, they haven’t run into any resistance. It’s like Meryl is only just starting to dig into the city now. So…

> Come in from Meryl’s south, and flank her. You might squeeze her in with Griselda’s troops.

“Follow me.” Your tanks form up into column behind you. “Griselda, I’m going to try and move on into them from the south, see if I can get them to go to you.”

“Roger that,” says Griselda.

You’re quite confident in your flank. There’s no reasonable thing that Meryl can do against it except dig in deeper or go out into the open where combat favors you. But unfortunately, it wouldn’t work out like that. Meryl is probably too smart for that.

And too smart she was. A 17 pounder shot flies past your turret. You duck down instinctively and take a look. “Spread out!” you shout. Your tanks break column and assume a skirmish line. You take a look. The southern road in is guarded by four Sherman Fireflies, angled around corners to take advantage of cover. They fire a barrage of shots, which all explode and burst all around you as you all scatter. “Scatter, scatter!” You all spread out further and fire back. Your shots find only rubble and buildings as the Fireflies pop back into cover before coming out and returning the favor.

Alright, bit of a roadblock here. “Benny, you see anything?”

“We’re running into resistance too,” says Benny. “Mira! There’s a Skink firing on us! And a couple of Grizzlies!”

You decide to keep the Fireflies pinned here with Elyse. “Elyse, I need you to stay here while I take Dalia and Lyra, we’re going to find a way around.”

“Roger that!” says Elyse. “Give them hell, Elodie!”

Given the sheer size of the Challenger’s turret and the length of the tank itself, it’s not going to do well in tight quarters. You’ll take the ones in tanks of your size and hope that’ll be enough. Once you get into their lines, you can cause enough chaos to force them to displace hopefully. Right into your lines if you’re lucky.

After a deploying a smoke bomb, the three of you make it out while the Sherman Fireflies and Elyse duke it out. The smoke will buy you some time, but once they realize you’re gone, the Fireflies might swarm Elyse. And worse, they’ll probably alert Meryl that you’re missing.

“They got us!” yells Benny.

“They trapped us!” says Suvorov.

“Fiends!” yells Kathy. “Don’t worry, I’ll lead us out!”

“You have a plan!?” shouts Suvorov.

“… eh not really but I can think of one!” says Kathy.

You look over and see a large stone wall separating two buildings. Right, that’s a good spot as any. You turn and crush through it, opening up to an empty street. Alright, you’re somewhere between Kathy and Suvorov, who are now surrounded.

“Right, I’m taking the heavies, we’ll move in from the northwest. Stand by,” says Iris.

Iris is coming into the city from the northwest. All of the east is likely Meryl’s town. She hasn’t dug in, there hasn’t been enough time for her to do so. So they’re likely to be clustered together instead of spread far apart. Any tank you see here is likely to be in a pack with others.

Move East, but try to avoid Meryl's forces for now. Find hiding places by smashing through the back of houses, parking alleys, hiding in parks etc. and wait for Meryl to move past us to either fortify or engage the main part of our force. Tell Elyse to disengage with smoke and head North-East into the hills, then start hunting the Sexton battery probably hanging around near the Gagetown starting position.

You decided to head eastwards. But you stick to the smaller roads instead of the larger main ones to avoid Meryl’s forces. You want to try and get Meryl to come out past you or you want her to engage Iris in combat. You also give Elyse the order to disengage and head northeast towards the hills. Hopefully she catches the Sextons hiding out as well. You don’t remember if they were in the convoy heading into town or not, but in here, they’d have as much utility as your Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger. Which is to say very little. Unless in direct fire like a B-4 Howitzer.

“There,” you say. You spot a small park with a fountain in the middle of it and some trees lining the pathways. You and Lyra quickly venture inwards. You take cover behind the fountain while Lyra takes cover behind a tree. Dalia meanwhile moves across the street and hides herself in a garage across from the park. You set up crossfire so that none of you are aiming at each other at any given time.

And from here-on, you wait.

The smoke probably hasn’t dispersed yet, which means the Fireflies probably haven’t realized you’re gone. But they’ll definitely have noticed Elyse not firing back at them. Hopefully Elyse will be fine operating so far behind enemy lines with so little support. You lean back against your seat, then crouch slowly. No need to give a bigger silhouette while you hide. You look behind you, some high buildings too around three or four stories. That’ll give you decent cover but it’ll also block your exit. Only way out without blowing some buildings is the way you came or further east here.

You take a breath, then prick up your ears.

“I hear something,” says Dalia. You take a listen. Your engine noise is quiet but you can hear the very distinct sound of Continental engines. Northwards. Right behind Dalia.

A shell explodes through a wall next to Dalia, and flies past and destroys a tree in the park. The wall and the entire half of the garage next to Dalia crumbles as she peels away, revealing a Grizzly I tank. They must have picked out the engine noise!

Before you can fire back, the Grizzly I backs away back into cover. Well, they know you’re here now. Dalia suddenly comes back from the east, backing up at top speed further west where you came in from. “More coming! Fireflies! Down the road!” A 17 pounder shell travels past her and explodes in a building.

Bring Dalia across the front of us at high speed, then when the Gagetown tanks pursue, wait for the first two to pass us. Then, Lyra hits the lead machine in the front, we hit the second vehicle with our gun, then gun it forwards, ramming the third in a sidesweep before finishing it off with a second shot to the side. Dalia then doubles back as tight as possible as Lyra and us cross through the now destroyed lead trio, scattering and drawing the enemy's attention long enough for Dalia to hit them, if any targets remain. Then we scatter back into the city to coordinate the next attack.

“Track her, Ingrid!”

“Got it!” says Ingrid. You push past all the debris and wreckage and start following after her in the smoke. You look back and see Lyra trying to figure out what to do with her tank now that it doesn’t have a cannon. For shame, but you don’t know what to do with her either. You’ll have to take Meryl alone. Meryl adjusts her headphones, then looks back at you. “Alright, she’s going up this street here for two hundred feet, then right.”

“Josephina,” you call.

“Got it!” says Josephina.

You lean back, grimacing a little as you keep your ears open. Any tank in hiding is still going to keep their engines running so they can make a speedy exit. It does however betray their location if you know how to watch out for them. What’s more, you think you’re piecing together Meryl’s plan. Or her intended plan. She probably wanted to delay you and keep you at arms length so she could get a shot at Griselda. The team could get strung out here in the city. And while they’re busy mopping up her team, she swoops in and gets one shot in. One shot is really is she needs.

Too bad you’re just going to go directly after her.

“Griselda, Iris. I had eyes on Meryl. I’m pursuing her now.”

“Don’t get suckered in!” yells Griselda. “Be careful!”

“We’ll rescue Kathy and Suvorov and be right with you, Elodie,” says Iris.

You blink, your ear twitching a little as you roll down a narrow street, only big enough for two cars going in two opposite directions. Standard stuff. Still, you keep your ears up.

Wait.

“STOP!” you scream. The tank grinds to a halt. The wall next to you explodes. And a 17 pounder shell gashes the front of the Comet, shearing the paint off and making a huge welt across the glacis. Son of a bitch! You look to your right and see Meryl’s gun barrel in a hole before she creeps away. “There, there! Josephina, take us right through!” You close the hatch and brace.

The Comet tank bursts through the remains of the building. Behind you, it collapses completely as you turn back out. You see Meryl backing up once more as the two of you end up in a large courtyard, featureless save for some decorative trees and a fountain in the center. She fires past you. The shot explodes, sending a pile of rubble to the road behind you, cutting your escape off.

Well. Seems she means to fight you.

No need to disappoint.

You lean back in the turret hatch, glaring at Meryl’s Grizzly Firefly. Meryl herself isn’t poking out of the cupola, and for good reason. She’s commanding from the gunner’s seat. She’s the one who makes the magic happen. She’s the one who once wiped out a team of tankers by herself all in one day. She’s one of the leaders in kills in all of NATO.

And yet, she is still not the champion of anything. Goes to show how much one needs their team to succeed.

Now it’s come to this. No escape now. She’s on the other side of this courtyard. Can’t be more than 200 meters away.

We don't need to take her out right away, keeping her pinned here while the rest of her team is mopped up by ours. See if Griselda can spare a tank to assist us

> Stay at range. She’ll pop you if you try to get close.

“Shoot her now, Winona!” You fire a shot right at her. She moves forward and sweeps to the right, dodging it handily. She starts circling around the courtyard, bringing her turret around while you start circling the other way. Both of you move clockwise around the Courtyard. You rotate your turret around to aim straight at her. You’ve got a decent shot at her side.

Stack loads in a round. “Up!”

“Firing!” yells Winona. Another shot from your cannon. Meryl’s tank brakes hard, and the shot grazes across her front glacis. “Fuck, no penetration!”

She fires. “BRACE!” you scream. The shot slams into your turret ring and explodes. Smoke immediately bursts into the compartments. You hear a small fire down somewhere too. What the hell!? Stack is already pulling out a smoke extinguisher to blow out the flames. “What happened!?”

“Ellie! Trouble! BIG TROUBLE!” screams Winona. “I can’t rotate the turret!”

“Is it jammed!?” you shout. You suck in some smoke and start coughing your lungs out. Oh God! You open the hatch and try to fan the smoke out with your hand. “Agh!”

“No! I can’t-“ Winona uselessly works the turret controls. “They’re just not working! Meryl must have hit us with an HE shell right in the ring!”

You poke your head and take a look. Fuck. Your turret’s jammed facing right. Nearly a perfect 90 degrees in fact. “Do we still have elevation?”

“Yeah!” Winona nods. You hear a loud grinding noise behind you. What the-

Stack pauses after she finishes extinguishing the fire. “That doesn’t sound good!” No shit. Smoke again fills the compartment. “Agh! The fucking engine, what happened to it!?” It sounds like Homer Simpson’s being grinded to bits back there! The concussion must have knocked something else loose too! You’re still mobile at least but that shot definitely hurt!

You keep on circling the tank. “Hit them where it hurts, Winona! When you get a shot!” you shout.

Stack loads in a new shell. “Up!”

“Firing!”

The shot whizzes through the air and strikes the treads of Meryl’s tanks. They don’t break or shatter, but she does start rolling to a stop. You take a look out of the turret and see where you struck her treads. The shot grazed off the front of the tread, but you definitely damaged it. If she pushes the tank too hard, she’ll snap it. Definitely going to be slowed to a crawl.

Which means her game now will be to snipe you from long distance. The turret is still on her while you circle towards her. “Keep it on her! Keep it on her! Fire now-“ Meryl starts backing up. “Wait!”

Too late. Winona fires a shot. It goes wide in front of Meryl and smashes into a building.

FUCK! You smash your fist onto the hull. “Stop! Stop! Back up!” you yell. Josephina stops the tank, then puts him into full reverse. Got to keep the gun pointed at her. She stops. “Stop!” The tank stops. She starts moving around, then starts advancing on you. “Shit! Back up!” You start trying to intercept while Meryl starts moving in diagonally, as if she’s avoiding a crocodile.

Oh, you see her game now. She can see your turrets stuck. And the best way to avoid getting shot again is to close the distance! She fires another shot. You brace. The shot skips against the ground and slams into straight into the front of the tank.

“AH! MERDE!” Josephina screams. Smoke billows out from Josephina’s station. “I can’t see! I can’t see!” The tank continues to back up.

Pop smoke, pull into a Shimada thrust, then at the last moment jink into a track sweep and immobilize Meryl. Her skill is with the gun, and from the Gunner's seat of a firefly she's much less capable of commanding her crew. Once she's detracked, use the few moments of distraction to disengage, then contact Lyra, she's not out of the match, even if she's down her main gun. Get the pioneer tools ready and link up with her.

Here's the thing, Meryl is a gunfighter, perhaps the consummate gunfighter of the NATO league. Even her successes in brawling have all been from trickshots and gun skills.

If you don't think you can find an engagement that forces her out of that paradigm of gunnery focused fights, disengage and wait until you can strike her in a manner that does.

“Pop smoke, Stack!” Stack fires off the smoke bombs, dousing the tank with smoke. “Josephina, listen to the sound of my voice! Traverse the tank right!” She stops up the tank then starts rotating the tank to the right, to point it at Meryl. “Stop!” She stops. “Now! Shimada Thrust!”

She starts speeding the tank out of the smoke. You pop out of it to see Meryl’s gun pointed straight at the tank’s turret. She fires. The shell shreds the spaced armor plating on the turret and gashes the armor beneath. You speed past then pull around for a Nishizumi Hook…

Then speed straight into her treads. Your treads smash against hers. With a loud snap, you hear Meryl’s tracks completely split apart. “Alright, disengage! Disengage!” Run for it, Josephina, go, go, go!

Josephina speeds towards the rubble as she fans smoke out of her compartment. “Winona!”

“Got it!” Winona fires an HE shell at the rubble and blows it, allowing a small path through. You’re loathe to disengage like that, but Meryl put up a better fight than you were expecting.

“Stack, damage report!”

“Turret ring is still fucked!” says Stack. “We probably have a coolant leak in the engine too! But other than that, we’re fine!” And thank God.

“Alright, we’re going to link up with Lyra, where is she?” you ask. “Ingrid?”

Ingrid looks back. “Back where we ambushed those Fireflies. I’ve been keeping track of everyone, and so far not a dent in either side. Meryl’s team is actually pulling back further into the city eastwards.” Towards Meryl? Were they all trying to come back to her to protect her? Damn. If you had been slower, you’d have gotten swarmed…

Lyra calls out to you over the radio. “Ellie! There’s no fixing our barrel! Our tank is completely ruined! What do we do?”

We're in a city, find an auto shop and link up there. We can use the equipment there and our tanker bars to, together, lift the turret up and have Stack literally hammer the turret ring back into shape. We can salvage whatever parts we can from Lyra's machine to repair our engine and turret drive too, then cut away the destroyed end of her barrel and make sure the crown's clear. From there she can fire HE and smoke at least, and we can resecure the barrel roughly just to let her act as a decoy.

You burst through the garage door of a large autoshop. Lyra follows in behind you, screeching to a halt over one of the inspection pits. “We gotta get this turret off!” you shout. Lyra’s crew dismounts and hurries to grab welders and saws. “Stack, get the turret ring unjammed! Winona, Josephina, engine! Ingrid, keep on the radio and keep us updated!”

Lyra flips down a welder’s mask. “Time to piss off the ATF!” She fires up a blowtorch and starts cutting through the broken gun barrel. Josephina and Winona hurry to grab spare parts from Lyra’s tank and use them to fix up the engine. A jet of steam blasts out of the engine as they open up the block, and they hurry to get things under control. Meanwhile, Lyra’s crew help you all unsecure the turret from your Comet. Stack hurries to hammer the turret ring back into shape with a sledgehammer as the turret is pried out of place by tanker bars and with the help of an engine crane as well.

This is all going to take time though. Ingrid pokes her head out of her compartment. “Ellie! News from Griselda!” You walk up to her then grab the radio.

“Ellie, what’s your status?”

“Enacting emergency repairs,” you say. “You?”

“Iris is taking her heavies and what tanks we got left and pushing on Meryl now. But they’re telling me Meryl just got her tracks fixed and now she’s hunting them down left and right.”

You huff. “Alright. We’ll try to be back in action soon.”

“Make it quick,” says Griselda.

“Anytime would be nice,” Iris adds in. “Because she’s right behind us to the west and is currently squeezing us right into her tanks. We can barely fight back in this street we’re stuck in.” The autoshop suddenly shakes. Everyone pauses, looking around.

“What was that?” you ask.

Iris says, “They’re using their Sextons to shoot at us directly. Not very sporting.”

You hear a loud bang then a clattering, then look over. Lyra’s gun barrel has been shaved almost down to the mantlet. “I gotta go,” you say. You hurry on over to Lyra as she flips her welder’s mask up. “How’s the tank?”

“Other than our considerably shortened gun, we’re dandy!” Lyra grins happily. “How about you?” You look back.

Stack screams at you as she whacks the turret ring back into place. “Turret ring needs more time!”

“We got the coolant leak though!” Winona adds.

I have a plan, a cunning, cunning plan. We're going to use Lyra as a decoy for us, to distract Meryl and ambush her.
>>
>>2836100
>Lyra’s gun barrel has been shaved almost down to the mantlet
Alright so that's a drastic decrease in muzzle velocity and accuracy, with an after effect of reduced armor pen.
> “Lyra, get out there. We’ll be right behind you.”

With that reduced AP, piercing the armor of the Shermans and Grizzlys (Grizzlies?) seems unlikely, so she should go to harass the Sextons since those are relatively unarmored and unagile.

It’s like Wolverine slashing a chalkboard! But at least the turret works now!

“We’re good!” you say. “Everyone fall in!” Everyone gets back into their tanks.

AHHH, multitasking is tough. Use Lyra as bait, hiding her shortened gun, while we shadow her. If we see Meryl moving to engage, we try to sneak up on her from the flank and ambush her.

So this was Meryl’s plan, eh? To keep you all distracted so that she could go after Griselda? Alright then. Griselda has all the casemate tanks, the ones that are all horrible at city combat, and Claudia. A reasonable idea considering as the flag tank Griselda shouldn’t be doing too much fighting. No one could have predicted Meryl going on an absolute rampage though.

Right now, you have to consider the idea that Griselda is going to get sniped. Maybe a shell ricochet off of Jane’s Jagdtiger.

No matter. You have to go. But before that. “Lyra. I need your help real quick.”

“What’s up?” asks Lyra over the radio. You look over at a shop, conveniently selling PVC pipes.

“We’re going to be doing something brutally cunning.”

You arrive on the outskirts of the city, where buildings are low and spread out and the roads are long and sprawl out into the desert. There you see Meryl fighting it out with Griselda and her remaining guard. Griselda has the casemate tanks set out in front of her as she backs away. Jane’s Jagdtiger however receives a shot ricocheting off the road and right into the soft underbelly.

> KO: JANE FOGERTY (Jagdtiger “Spinal Tap”)

You fire a shot at her. The shot whizzes past her front, which gets her attention really quickly. She fires off a smoke bomb in the direction of Griselda’s tanks and turns towards you, only to see Lyra’s tank speeding towards her.

Alright, you take a breath. You’re backed around the corner of another building out of the sight.

You have to wait until Meryl gets a shot off. You hear a loud bang. Not the distinct crack of the 17 pounder, probably Lyra’s shortened gun.

Then you hear the crack of the 17 pounder.

“Now!” you scream. Make your sacrifice mean something, Lyra! You speed out around the corner and fire at Lyra. “Hit her where it hurts, Winona!”

“Firing!”

The shot goes out and slams into the mantlet of the Grizzly. She turns the turret around. Fuck! Did that do anything!? She fires again. OH SHIT!

The shot screams past you. Meryl pops a smoke bomb and starts retreating backwards into it. Damn! She’s getting away! She’s probably trying to build distance. You blink. If she builds distance, she’s going to try and snipe Griselda out. You have to stop her!

“Ingrid, track where she’s going.”

“Got it,” says Ingrid.

“Everyone else, time to start stacking shells, let’s get this gun loaded!” You reach down and grab a shell. What follows next is a barrage of 77mm shells through the smoke, pounding away at Meryl’s last known position. Josephina keeps the tank moving forward, slowly but steadily. You fire another shot out through the smoke.

You hear another crack. This time coming right at you. The shot rips through the smoke and smashes against the turret side, shredding the armor there once more. Okay! That’s just not fair! You slap your hand against the turret. You lean back and look around. Griselda and company are continuing to reverse northwards, probably hoping to keep their guns pointed and… wait. Didn’t they say Meryl’s team scattered in different directions?

You gasp. Oh shit! “Griselda, stop!” you yell. Griselda grinds to a halt, as do her guards. You take out your binoculars and take another look. You see a shot speed right past Griselda.

“Shit, they’re behind us!” says Griselda. “I count a Firefly and a Grizzly!” They don’t need to take down Griselda. If they keep her pinned long enough, Meryl will get the kill shot! “Popping smoke!” Griselda sends out a smoke bomb, dousing everyone in blinding smoke once more.

“They’ve got us pinned here!” says Duchess.

“We’re coming back now,” says Iris. “Forget Meryl’s routing forces.”

You hear another crack, and it smashes straight into Duchess’ side armor.

Flank. Her. And close range, that was the whole point of the Lyra bait, but well, we wasted that now. She'll probably use a building for cover to assume a firing position so sneak up on it, then ram straight through to get to point blank. Then go for a ram before taking the fight into a circling brawl. Focus on mobility to deny her the opportunity to use her gunnery skills.

And stop trying to take long range gunfights with Meryl, we will not win them.

“Rush in! Let’s go!” You take a moment to think about this though. You’ve been trying to fight with Meryl gun to gun all this time. She might be thinking ‘oh Ellie might try and snipe me again, how cute.’ No, not this time. She’ll be hiding in that smoke waiting for a shot in Griselda. But you won’t give her that opportunity. Your tank speeds in. You hold on and brace yourself as you go straight through the smoke.

Then you see a wood shed! Shit! You turn in and hold on. You crash straight the shed. Wood explodes everywhere and splinters across your hull. You turn up and look around.

Right there to your right is Meryl’s rear. You see Meryl’s tank commander turned out, looking out with her binoculars. She turns around and her eyes bug out when she sees you. “Bloody hell! Meryl!” she screams. She turns in quickly, and the tank starts speeding forward. Oh no she doesn’t!

“Josephina, get up her ass! Get her!” She turns the tank right and then rams it straight into her engine block. The gun points straight at her turret. Now, now! She turns to the left and speeds forward. Your shot sheers straight off of her turret. Fuck! She tries to pull around in a tight fashion. “Keep your gun on her, Winona!”

“Trying!” Winona calls. The turret starts spinning as Meryl moves forward left, trying to keep out of reach of your turret. Her own turret starts rotating around, trying to catch you.

Then she fires. The blast deafens you and sprays you in the heat of the muzzle blast. A loud ringing noise goes off in your ears as she tries to circle around you. She pops smoke canisters on the back of the tank. No way! SHE’S TRYING TO ESCAPE AGAIN!

Use the longer hook to cut off her line of retreat and outrun her gun, then fire an APCR shot to either stun or damage Meryl's tank. She'll try to turn and get around us, at which point we accelerate forward into a Mudslinger, blinding her and giving us time to reaccelrate, back past her traversing gun, for a Shimada Thrust to the rear. Running away will no longer be an option, she'll have to take the fight. If we do our absolute best to leverage our superior manoeuvrability and stay on top of her, that is a fight we can win.

You speed past her and slip into a long powerslide around her. “APCR, Stack!”

She shoves in an APCR round. “Up!”

The slide continues, spraying mud, dirt, and sand underneath your treads as you come around her front and all the way around her rear. She stops up, trying to reverse and pull left to get around. Nope. “Fire!” you order. The shot plows straight into her side. She stops up, and you can see the engine block suddenly burst open with smoke and steam. There! “Now, Josephina! Josephina rips around their front and again pulls into another slide. Your tank slips to the right, sending your rear across their front and a huge load of sand across their sights and periscopes at the front. Josephina again pulls around and with the momentum gained, the tank speeds straight into her rear.

Smoke shoots out of Meryl’s engine block, but she’s not out of it yet. Despite her turret traverse situation, she’s still trying to get a line on you. You pull away, grinning. Alright, one last shot…

“ELLIE! HERE WE COME!” What the-

Elyse’s Challenger tank bursts out of the dissipating smoke. “We got her now!” She pulls up alongside you, aiming her gun at Meryl. Well that- You blink, looking at Meryl’s gun. NO. NO NO NO

Meryl fires.

It happens all at once. But from the dust on the ground, to the sudden spin out of Elyse’s challenger and a new gash on the side of her turret, to the shell now sticking out of your right side engine block…

An inch over, and that would’ve been a KO for your tank.

Griselda yells, “I hate to break up the duel, BUT MORE OF MERYL’S TANKS ARE COMING AFTER US!”

Send Elyse to help Griselda, we kill Meryl, we win anyway, more likely we can finish her than we can run over to Griselda in time to help her.

For us, traverse the gun onto target, Meryl will try for one last shot, her crew must be desperate so we have to assume they'll be quick on the draw. So the moment we get onto target, the time that Meryl will think is the moment to kill us as we've stopped and let the fight become a simply quickdraw contest, Jose stuttersteps us forward once, out of the way of the 17 pounder round. Her shot spent and tank immobilised, we plant an APDS round straight under the mantlet of the firefly, on the flat face of the lower turret or turret ring.
>>
>>2839114
>>2839136
Would Elyse make it in time t make a difference?
Changing my vote to incorporate your stutterstep idea but with Elyse going along around the opposite side. Meryl can only track one target, so at least one of us is guaranteed to get a shot off.

It's less likely, but honestly if she's here we just risk Meryl using her inexperience against us, and it's hedging our bets so to speak.

“Elyse, go help, Griselda!”

Elyse gets her Challenger together. “Y- yeah!” Probably still stumbling from that hit. She speeds off. You keep on moving around Meryl. She too keeps her gun trained on you. Alright, it’s high noon, bitch. You grab onto the hatch and wait. Ready…

“Now!” you yell.

Josephina stops the tank. Meryl fires. The shot nearly blinds you with how bright it is. But judging from the lack of reaction from the tank, it went wide. “APDS!” you shout.

Stack rams the round home. “UP!”

“Firing!”

Winona sends the round away. It embeds itself right beneath the mantlet. The engine explodes in a shower of flames and smoke. The white flag pops up too, as does Meryl’s crew aiming to get out before the tank goes up.

You, Griselda, Iris, and your crew watch as they set the flamed out Grizzly Firefly onto a tank transporter. Meryl stands next to you all as well, her arms crossed. “Shame really,” says Meryl. “Thought we had a shot this year.”

“You almost had us a few times there,” says Griselda. “Could’ve gone either way.”

“I know.” Meryl is rather stoic. You can tell the life has been absolutely sucked out of her. Like her spirit has been crushed. And yet she doesn’t obviously show it. Instead, she chooses graciousness in defeat. She turns to you all, then forces a smile on her face. “But it is what it is. Best not to dwell on it now. This is my last tournament with Camp Gagetown. From here on out, Meryl Hoffmeister will be preparing for her college exams.” She offers her hand to Griselda.

Griselda shakes it. “Good luck. And don’t worry, we’re not going to lose like some chumps in the next round. We’re going to show you we earned this.”

“I don’t doubt that,” says Meryl. She nods to you. “And I certainly don’t doubt your abilities either, Elodie.” You offer your hand too, and she shakes it firmly.

“Hey!” You can see a smaller girl in Camp Gagetown garb coming up to you all. She stands before you all. Unlike Meryl, you can see her shoulders shaking, her cheeks wet and red from obvious crying. Her black hair is brushed back beneath a cap and yet is frayed out. “I can’t believe you all. Meryl’s last year in Tankery and you do this to her.”

Meryl rolls her eyes, then smiles more genuinely. “Please. You’re embarrassing me.” The girl looks at Meryl, obviously distraught. “Take it on the chin, May. This wasn’t your fault. It’s mine. You’re a Freshman, I’m a Senior. It was my duty to train you. I failed.” Even you have to cringe a little at how little Meryl is giving herself credit. She brought the team to the finals after all. She just couldn’t take them far enough.

May sniffles. “No you didn’t.” A few more Camp Gagetown girls come around. They all refuse to acknowledge that Meryl failed them. If anything to them, it was the other way around.

“We’re so sorry, Commander.”

“We should’ve done better.”

“Make them call for a rematch! We can do it again, we can beat them, I know we can!” All the girls start clamoring for a rematch. But Meryl silences them all with a gesture, then turns to you all.

“Good luck!” Meryl salutes you all. May does too, respectfully. You all salute back. With that, Meryl turns around, and takes her leave.

May however looks to you. She storms up to you, then points at you. “Next year. We’ll be back.”

You offer your hand to her. “Looking forward to it.” May looks down at it, as if confused by your reaction. But she sighs and shakes your hand.

Once she lets go, she turns around and leaves with the rest of the dejected and disappointed Camp Gagetown tankers. You understand why they’re dejected. Meryl Hoffmeister is no longer going to be part of the team after this. She’s moving on as are most of their seniors too. They’ll be left without guidance.

The only thing they’ll have left is the drive to win.

As the sun sets, all of you gorge yourselves on celebratory dinner. You look through your texts and find Mom and Dad’s congratulations.

> Mom: Congrats, sweetie! You really nailed them!
> Dad: That’s my girl! Proud of you!
> EZ: Thanks. Love you guys

Even Jock had some time to text you.

> JJ: Good work out there! That’s my girl!
> EZ: You know my Dad also said ‘That’s my girl!’
> JJ: Good work out there! I’ll give you a nice reward when I see you again!
> EZ: oh god please stop

The large table is set with roast chicken, salads, gravy, lobster (the lobster was very popular, you should know you have an entire lobster on your plate), crab, all that fun stuff. And the cake too, courtesy of NATO. This time, it was a victory you can be pretty proud of. Nobody made any real mistakes. And this time, Elyse showed her worth too in combat. “I swear, they started running like bugs when Elyse came in behind them!” says Dalia.

“It was like she ran into a flock of seagulls at the beach, they just scattered!” says Kathy. Everyone laughs while Elyse whirls her finger through her hair, nervously as everyone showers praise on her. “She saved that entire flank. They’d have crushed us if she hadn’t shown up out of nowhere!”

“Well, either that or Ellie would’ve…” Elyse mutters.

Iris walks past, tea in hand. “No, Elyse. You did well.” All the tankers look at iris, then at Elyse. Elyse blushes intensely, grinning sheepishly as well.

Griselda steps past you as you eat. She pats your head. “Good work.” You blink, looking back at her with a mouthful of lobster tail. “Tomorrow we plan for the Championship. Get some rest. Sleep in.” You nod to that. Griselda goes to sit with her crew, happily chatting with them.

Stack rubs her biceps, grimacing. “My arms are still sore from that hammering!”

“Next match will be a snap!” Winona proclaims. “Right, Ellie?”

No easy matches at this level, but we're no pushovers either.

“Don’t be so sure. There are no pushovers at this level, Winona. We certainly aren’t.”

Ingrid nods, nudging Stack. “Ellie’s right. We’re probably going tobe going up against some serious competition next round. And if we make it to the finals? Ooh boy, you better believe that’s going to destroy us.”

“Hmph!” Stack turns her nose up at the thought. “We’ve weathered worse storms! A bunch of girls with hot air instead of blood in their brains is nothing compared to us our and our teamwork!” She thumps her chest. “I say, let them come! We’ll send them home all the same!” She raises her glass of ginger ale. “Here’s to LGA, girls!” Everyone looks over at her. “Here’s to a championship in the making!”

“Here, here!” yells Serafina. Everyone clinks glasses in cheers. You clink yours against Winona’s.

You take a breath, sighing a little. Everyone is in good spirits. You’ve just survived your first postseason match after all. And damn was it hard. The next and most important thing though is to survive the next couple.

Here’s to the next round.

Thanks for the fun, boss.

Meryl was a toughie, but it was all on her. I feel bad for Meryl, but she wasn't able to bring her team up to snuff, and they leaned on her too much to be champions
